Bob Gruner of U.W.-Park-side is attempting to turn Dan Morrison of Messiah College in the 158 lb. finals of the NAIA National Championships. Gruner won the match 8-2. Morrison started the match with a 30-0 record and 28 pins, including 4 in the earlier rounds. Gruner ended the season with a 27-2 record and 17 pins. See Advise from Champion section.

New York State Champion Al DeStefanis of Locust Valley, Section Eight, is shown in the finals at 105. He beat Joe Downey of Deer Park, Section Elven (Suffolk County, Long Island), 9-8. DeStefanis won the State crown at 98 in '78. He is wrestling at Hofstra this year.

Joe Gonzales of Cal State-Bakerfield broke a national record at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Corvallis. Gonzales won the NCAA Divison I 118-pound title, winning all 55 of his matches this season. The NCAA record for most victories in the season was 51. The old record was held by former Oregon State heavyweight Larry Bielenberg in 1977, who finished the season 51-1 after losing in the NCAA finals. See story page 19
