Finest performance ever
Consisting entirely of first-time Olympians, the U.S. Greco-Roman team, had its finest performance ever. The big story was Rulan Gardner's defeat of "The Russian" -- undefeated legend Aleksandr Karelin -- to win gold. After an exhausting legal battle for a spot on the U.S. team, Matt Lindland fought his way to the silver medal. Garrett Lowney put forth his personal best and earned a bronze. Jim Gruenwald and Kevin Bracken, though out of the medals, finished a respectable sixth.

All that glitters isn't gold
For the first time since 1968 -- excluding the boycotted 1980 Moscow Games -- the highly decorated U.S. freestyle team did not bring home a gold medal. U.S. Nationals champions Brandon Slay and Sammie Henson earned silver medals. Terry Brands, who was left behind in 1996 while his brother went on to win gold, took the bronze. Lincoln McIlravy fell to archrival Daniel Igali of Canada and had to settle for bronze. Americans Charles Burton and Kerry McCoy finished fifth.
