"After the Scrimmage."
The team tumbled back onto the bus for the trip back to school. As the bus pulled out of the gym parking lot onto the access road around to the front of the school, a noticeable change could be seen. When the team arrived for weigh-in there was hardly a car in front of the school. Now, apparently there was a concert or some other well-attended event taking place, and the front of the school was absolutely packed with cars. Cars were also parallel parked on both sides of the curving access road, which was not designed for that purpose. As a result the bus could scarcely squeeze through the gauntlet of automobiles.
If anything, the available space for the bus was becoming even more constricted as the bus progressed. The main road in front of the school was visible but apparently was going to be a tough place to get to. Talk on the bus had shifted from the just-completed match to the maze of cars we now found ourselves in. Frustrated, Coach Destin opened the bus door and had his assistant, Coach Moore walk in front of the bus, first gesturing to edge the bus slightly left or slightly right. This worked, but slowly, as the bus progressed towards the street with only one curve left to negotiate on the access road and then on to McDonald’s!
Unfortunately, just up ahead a couple of poorly parked vehicles stuck out just far enough that Hercules could not have squeezed the bus through. Coach Destin stopped the bus. He stepped out himself to survey the scene, shook his head, conversed apparently without success with his assistant coach, both gesturing with their hands, and got back on the bus. There was no way to take that bus forward, and Richard Petty couldn’t have backed it out without sideswiping a dozen cars.
Coach Destin then surprised the team by ordering the starters in the five heaviest weight classes to step outside. “Bozworth, Woodson, Longstrom, Hopkins, and Ellison,” he called. No one knew what he had in mind, but tired of being stuck on the bus most of the team was immediately on its feet volunteering for service. Coach Destin insisted five was enough and instructed the rest to stay on the bus. Faces were soon pressed against the bus windows to follow the action.
What happened next was all around school the next day by first bell. One of the cars jutting out into our path was a Toyota Camry and Coach Destin instructed the five to lift its front bumper and place its right front wheel up onto the curb. The “weight-lifters” then performed the same feat of strength on the rear bumper and once more from front and back.
Presto! The five had cleared enough roadway for the bus to pass through. Soon, Coach Destin was back in the driver’s seat and like Harry Houdini had made an amazing escape from impending doom.
