Augsburg Three-peats as Division III National Champs
Upper Iowa and Wartburg Tie for 2nd
By John Johnson/The Mat.com

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (3/2/02) In a tournament reminiscent of the exciting finish of the 2002 Junior College Nationals in Rochester, Mn., the Division III National Championships held in First Union Arena came down to the finals and a match that need riding time to decide the winner!
Heading into the final round, Augsburg the two-time defending champions were in first place in the team race, leading the always tough Wartburg Knights of Waverley, Iowa, by two points, 83 to 81. However, the Knights coached by Jim Miller did not have finalists and could not catch Jeff Swenson's Auggies. However, the Upper Iowa Peacocks lead by Heath Grimm had three finalists as did Augsburg, and with some great wrestling the boys from Fayette, Iowa, had a chance to claim the title. The Peacocks were in third place with 77 points, trailing the Auggies by six points, and with a total of 12 point and possibly more with bonus points available in the finals and the hope for some Augsburg defeats, Upper Iowa still had hopes for a title.

The first final of the night at 125# saw Jamie Taxted the #6 seeded wrestler from Buena Vista(IA) decision Carlos Restrepo the #6 seed from Ithaca(NY) by the score of 7-3. This gave Taxted the title and helped Al Baxter's Beavers finish a strong 5th at the national meet.

At 133 pounds, a young man from Loras College(IA) had what could only be termed as a dream tournament. Steve Martin, coached by Randy Steward, was un-seeded in the tournament and knocked off three seeded wrestlers to reach the finals. In the preliminary round, Martin was paired against the #1seed and champ from 2000, John Marchette of Augsburg. The DuHawk would decision the #1 seed 5-4, and then pin his next two seeded wrestlers, #8 Gary Mikolay of MSU in 5:46 and #5 Dan Flounders of Trenton College in 1:46 to keep his dream tournament alive. In the finals Martin would meet Tom Hall of Ithaca, who was also un-seeded and who also beat the #3 and #7 seeded wrestlers to make his trip to the finals. So the dream tournament was on the line for two unseeded wrestlers in the133# finals, and for Tom Hall of Ithaca the dream came true when he decision Martin 10-6.

Upper Iowa saw its first opportunity to move closer to the team title when 1# rated and 2000 champ Jesus Wilson stepped on the ma tat 141 pounds to face Brady Cudd the #2 seed from UW-LaCrosse. Wilson was in control of the match when he went for a big throw and got caught himself. He watched his third-period lead of 8-4 turn into an 8-all tie as Cudd scored a four-point move. However, Wilson got out of the jam and, with riding time, escaped with the 141# title. It was his second national title. The first came in 2000, and came with a tougher-than-expected 10-8 decision over Brady Cudd of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. "I was just trying to help our team, and I went for a big move that got me in trouble," said Wilson, a native of Cuba. "But I recovered and won the match."

With Wilson's win, the Peacocks moved into a tie for 2nd with Wartburg, 81-81, and still had two finalists with a chance to catch Augsburg who had 83 points. Upper Iowa's remaining finalists were Jorge Borgen the #2 seed at 165 and Cliff Thompson the #6 seed at 197 pounds. Key to these match ups would be at 165#'s where UIU's Borgen faced Augsburg's #1 seeded man Tony Abbott, a head-to-head match that could decide the team title.

In the head-to-head match at 165 pounds between the two top teams, Augsburg's Tony Abbott was in for the ride of his life! The match between Abbott and UIU's Borgen was one of tight wrestling and low scoring. Abbott scored a second-period escape and held on for 1:31 of riding time to gain an extra point and the 2-1 decision, which was enough to overcome two stalling calls for a penalty point in the third period.
"I knew it was close, and I knew that one or two of us were going to have to win, for sure," said Abbott regarding the team race. "My match was really important, because I was wrestling a guy from Upper Iowa, and that's a big swing either way, whoever wins. I knew if I would win, it would help seal the deal, which is the case now."

"He was the most improved wrestler we had as a freshman, from freshman to sophomore, from sophomore to junior and from junior to senior," said Augsburg head coach Jeff Swenson. "Tony Abbott just kept on getting better and better. He epitomizes the one-percent-improvement-a-day philosophy that our program has."

Although Abbott won and gave Augsburg 4 additional points to improve their lead to 6 points, 87-81, over Upper Iowa, the Peacock's still had a chance with Thompson at 197 pounds. Going into the match Thompson knew he would need to win, but not just any win, he had to win by a pin to tie the Auggies for the national title, and any win would give the Peacocks sole possession of 2nd place leaving Wartburg with 3rd place.
In the 197# final, Thompson face the #4 seed Yan White from UW-Stevens Point. The match saw no scoring until Thompson had an escape and then a takedown with 28 seconds left in the second period giving him a 3-0 lead. As soon as Thompson secured his takedown, White would escape, turn in on Thompson and body lock him to the mat for the fall with 9 seconds left in the period. White would be crowed the champion with a fall in 4:51, and Augsburg would take the title. "Ever since we were freshman we talked about our senior year would be out year," said Thompson, one of three all-Americans for UIU. "We wanted to do it for Coach McCready."

Mike McCreaty, was the coach at UIU when Borgen, Thompson, and 6th place all-American Meyers enrolled at Upper Iowa, died in December 1999 of a heart attack. McCreaty was a quite man, but made plenty of noise on the mat as a heavy weight at UNI and on various international teams. Mike was succeeded by Sam Barber, who was later named rookie coach of the year in 2000, after leading the Peacocks after McCreaty died.

Current Upper Iowa Coach Heath Grimm still had a shot at tying for the crown after the Auggies' Nick Slack and Ricky Crone were beaten, but it wasn't to be after Thompson's loss. Instead, the Peacocks settled for a second-place tie, its best finish in school history, with Iowa Conference rival Wartburg. Augsburg finished with 87 points, while UIU and Wartburg each scored 81. "I'm disappointed for Jorge and Cliff," said Upper Iowa head coach Heath Grimm, who was named Division III's national coach of the year. "It's always nice to end your careers with a 'W.' I just hope they can put this all in perspective. Hopefully, they can understand we've had a great tournament, and we've got to be proud of what we did. We're very honored to take home a second-place trophy. We're disappointed with the result tonight, but I'm very proud of our effort."

When Tony Abbott beat Upper Iowa University's Jorge Borgen 2-1 in the 164-pound championship match Saturday night, it clinched Augsburg College's eighth NCAA Division III wrestling team national title in the last 12 seasons.

Augsburg accumulated 87 points to win the national title for the third season in a row, a feat unprecedented in the 29-year history of the Division III tournament. Augsburg's eighth national title is also the most in Division III history. Upper Iowa and Wartburg finished with 81 points each, while Wisconsin-La Crosse finished fourth with 68 points and Buena Vista (Iowa) placed fifth with 63.5.

Abbott's was the lone individual national titlist for the Auggies, who had three wrestlers in championship matches and six who earned All-America honors. Augsburg's two other finalists fell short of their goals of winning national titles in Saturday's finals. Nick Slack, the 174-pound national champion in 2000 and national runner-up last year, lost in the championship match 12-8 to Ed Aliakseyenka of Montclair State (N.J.). Aliakseyenka built a 6-2 first-period lead and, though Slack cut the advantage to 8-7 early in the second period, the Montclair State wrestler remained in control throughout the match.

Slack, a three-time All-American and holder of the second-longest win streak in school history (60 from 2000-01), had his current 31-match win streak end with the championship loss, falling to 43-2 on the year. He finished with a career record of 130-13, though he lost just three matches in his last three seasons. Ricky Crone, a transfer from Northern Iowa, gave up a reversal and takedown in the second period to lose 4-2 to Andy Kazik of Lawrence (Wis.) in the 184-pound final.

The Wartburg College wrestling team made it eight of the last 10 years that the Knights program has placed either first or second in the nation with a tie for second at the 2002 NCAA Division III National Wrestling. Ultimately, second was not the position Wartburg wanted to end up in, but it is better than the sixth-place finish it had last year in Waterloo. Saturday's placing re-established itself as a national power.

The seven all-Americans the Knights finished with are the most in Jim Miller's tenure since it had eight in 1999 at the College of New Jersey when it won a national title. The seven All-Americans were also the most of any team in the field. Five victories in seven placing matches during the placing round aided the runner-up finish for Wartburg. The Knights crowned four consolation champs in junior Wil Kelly of Dubuque (141), junior Kevin Bratland of Dakota City (157), junior Alain Djoumessi of Quest, Cameroon (197) and junior LeRoy Gardner III of Golden Valley, Minnesota (Hwt.). Seven of the nine Knights wrestling in the championships received all-American honors. The Knights wrestling program now has a total of 90 all-Americans in its history and has had at least one each year since 1988 and two or more each season since 1991. It's the second all-American honor for junior 184-pounder Sonny Alvarez of Aledo, Ill. and Gardner.

Leading his team to a 4th place finish, UW-L senior Jason Ott claimed the national heavyweight title with a 9-5 decision over Eric Urdzik of John Carroll. Ott becomes the fifth wrestler in school history to capture a national title joining James Meyer (177-pounds in 1995); Brandon Penzkover (167 in 1996); Jeff O'Gara (118 in 1996) and Jeremy Miller (184 in 2000). It is also Ott's third career All-America honor, tying for most in school history (Bret Corner, Rob Anderson, O'Gara and Penzkover). He placed third last year and seventh in 1999 and finishes his career with a 13-5 record at the national championships. Ott, who went 4-0 at this year's championship, finishes his career at 109-20, fifth on the school's all-time wins list. He recorded 59 career wins by fall. Ott went 32-5 this year with 19 falls.

Seniors Brady Cudd and Josh Habeck along with junior Ben Bly all earned all-America honors Saturday. Cudd placed second at 141-pounds, falling 12-8 to Upper Iowa's Jesus Wilson. Cudd went 3-1 at the championships and wraps up his UW-L career with a 57-9 record. It is his second career All-America honor after finishing fifth last season. He finished 32-4 this year.

After losing his first match of the tournament, Habeck came back to win five straight matches to earn third-place at 133-pounds for his second career All-American honor. Habeck finished third at the national championships for the second consecutive season. He went 13-6 in four career national championship appearances. Habeck pinned Mike Waldron of Lycoming at 4:40 for third-place.

Bly earned his first career All-America honor with his fifth-place finish at 174-pounds. He defeated Josh Housekeeper of Delaware Valley 13-2 for fifth. Bly went 2-2 at the championships and is now 57-20 in his career. He finishes 18-7 this season. This was Bly's second career appearance at the national meet after going 1-2 last season.

The Eagles have now placed in the top-ten eight times at nationals since joining the NCAA III in 1992. This is UW-L's fourth top-four finish at the national meet. The Eagles finished a school-best second at the 2001 championships. With the four All-America honors this year, UW-L has claimed 46 individual honors in school history, including 30 in NCAA III. This marks the second time in school history the Eagles have had four All-Americans in one season (1998). UW-L had a school-record five All-Americans last year.

In other finals action, Luther College's Garrett Kurth fell short of becoming the school's second two-time national champion. The defending 149-pound champion was pinned in 4:45 by Darrell Carr of Manchester in the 149-pound final. Kurth, although a senior, will have one more shot at the title as he is just a junior eligibility wise. The #1 seed at 157, Jimmy Wallace of Wilmington decision the #3 seed Matt Moscatello of Trenton College(NJ) 11-6 for the title.

This years NCAA Division III Championship was one for the record books, and with 2002-2003 season approaching one can't but ask "who will win the title in 2003." Augsburg loses seven seniors and Upper Iowa loses three of its all-Americans, leaving Wartburg as preseason favorites on paper heading into the 2003 meet to be held at Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio. Wartburg returns all seven of its medal winners. The Knights program returns all but one of the nine national qualifiers for the 2002-03 campaign. But in a tournament that saw 10 different school claim individual champions, you can't count anyone out for the 2003 title!

Iowa Central Returns to the top after 21 seasons!

By John Johnson Courtesy of AWN

Rochester, Mn-- Iowa Central literally rode their way to National Title at the NJCAA National Wrestling Championships held at the Mayo Civic Center on February 16th. The Tritons lead by head coach Mark Ostrander, saw his the team title come down to the heavy weight match in which #6 rated Cain Valasquez defeated Neosho Panther Dean Taylor, rated 2nd, 2-1 in the final match of the night to give Iowa Central a 134-130 margin of victory over Neosho. The defending NJCAA Champions, North Idaho, finished 3rd with 166.5 points.

Having finished 2nd the past 2 season, the third time truly was a charm for the Tritons of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Coming in to the 2001-2002 season, Iowa Central had the 1# recruiting class in non-Division I schools, however they were battling the returning National Champions from 2001 North Idaho, and the champs from 2000, Neosho, who also boasts the 1# recruiting class from 2 years ago as compiled by Wrestling USA magazine.

In the final NJCAA team ratings, Iowa Central was rated 3# as a team heading into the NJCAA tournament and Neosho and North Idaho were rated 1st and 2nd. Neosho qualified all ten of their wrestlers for the NJCAA tournament as did Iowa Central. However, the Tritons 7# rated wrestle at 149, Kevin Contos, was left at Ft. Dodge for breaking team rules, leaving Iowa Central with 9 qualifiers.

Following the semi-final round, Iowa Central held a 9 point lead over Neosho, 128-119. The final round would determine the national championship, as Iowa Central and North Idaho both had 4 finalists and Neosho had 3.

At 125 pounds 1# rated James Rollins from Gloucester use a pair of wins over seeded opponents to reach the finals. In the second round of preliminaries, Rollins defeated the 2001 National runner-up Nick Voss of Waldorf 7-3, and pinned #6 Andrew Bradbury of William Rainey Harper in the semi-finals to advance to the finals against Nick Vogt of Meremec. Vogt the 5# rated wrestler at 125 topped the #4 wrestler Derek Jones of Colby, 13-4, in the semi-finals. The 1# rating of Rollins held true as he defeated Vogt 8-5. Rollins one of three Gloucester wrestlers in the finals helped his team capture the NJCAA Division III National Title with 101.5 points followed by runner-up Nassau who had 65.5 points.

In the 133 pound weight class,  Ozzie Saxon of North Idaho was a finalist in 2001, but had to settle for 2nd place. This year the Cardinal had a tough time just making the finals and was not going to be denied a title. However, it is not an easy task to win a title, and it was not easy for Saxon. In the semi-final round Saxon need double over time and the luck of the final flip to score a 2-1 decision over 3# rated Pat Garcia of Western Wyoming. Saxon then faced Jafari Vanier, one of Iowa Central's four finalists for the championship. In what was a matter of dejavu for Saxon, he found himself in the same situation as his semi-final match. Tied with Vanier of Iowa Central 1-1 after the first over time, Saxon won the flip, chose down and escaped to win the national title at 133#, a finbalist two years in a row and now a champ.

In the 41 years of the NJCAA Championships, only 40 wrestlers have won titles in both tries at JUCO's and 141 pound Bogdan Ciufulescu of Neosho became the 41st wrestler to do so. The Panther won the title in 2000, and made the 2002 finals by defeating 4# rated Nick Holt of North Idaho 14-4 in the quarters, and Paul Collum from Iowa Central 11-4 in the semi-finals. In the finals at 141#, Ciufulescu faced Peter DeLacruz of Pima. Delacruz, unrated, downed 5th, 6th, and 7th rated wrestlers to make the finals. In the final match Ciufulescu took an early and strong lead, but Delacruz kept battling to the point that the Neosho wrestler was two warning away from disqualification. In the end, Ciufulescu won the title 18-8, his second. Ciufulescu, 32, has competed 5 times in the world championships for Romania, placing 4th in the worlds at one point, as well as being a 1996 Olympian. DeLacruz was awarded the sportsmanship award for his valiant effort against a two time JUCO champion and Olympian. Ciufulescu win helped close the gap between Neosho and Iowa Central.

The number one and number two ranked wrestlers were beaten at 194# in the semi-finals to set up a finals match between the number 8 and 4 seeds. Keri Stanley(4#) of North Idaho topped the returning national champion and 2# ranked Bart Mahlert of Ellsworth 5-3 to reach the finals, and Ryan Mauer(8#) of Nassau downed the top seeded Partick Williams(1#) of Neosho 4-3 in the semis. In the finals, Mauer downed the Cardinal's Stanley by the score of 8-5 securing an individual title while helping his Nassau team to a 2nd place finish in division-III.

157# B.J. Wright rated 3rd of Ricks pinned the number two rated wrestler, Nick Rausenberger of Nassau to advance to the finals against the 1# rated wrestler at this weight in Israel Martinez of North Idaho. Wright dropped a close 5-4 decision to the Cardinal wrestler, closing the chapter on Ricks wrestling. Ricks College who qualified 7 wrestlers for the NJCAA tournament has joined forces with BYU to become BYU-Idaho, and will discontinue wrestling at the college.

Long time coach Bob Christensen stated that," I am devastated and disappointed that Ricks is discontinuing the wrestling program. This is my 34th year of coaching and wrestling has been a large part of my life for many years, I have seen many changes in junior college wrestling in my time. I have made a great number of friends with wrestling, and I will miss the sport. I guess I will have to find something to do on weekends."

Entering the 2002-2002 season, his 18th season, Christensen has compiled a 202-62 Career Record at Ricks. In 2000-2001, Christensen's team recorded an 18-5 record, the most dual meet wins ever in a single season for the coach. The 18 wins also pushed Christensen over the 200 win mark for his career. During his tenure, 40 Viking wrestlers have won Region 18 championships. Sixty four of Coach Christensen's wrestlers have won All-American honors. Eight of Bob's teams have finished in the top four at the NJCAA finals. He won Coach of the Year honors in 1988 and Region 18 Coach of the Year in 1999. Christensen's career dual meet record at Ricks College now stands at 202-62-2. Probably the best know wrestler to come out of Ricks is Olympian Rulon Gardner, which is just another example of the importance of junior college programs in developing wrestlers and the sport.

Bob was a state heavyweight wrestling champion at Missoula County High School in Montana. He won an NJCAA championship as a heavyweight at Ricks College in 1964. He finished third in the Western Athletic Conference in 1967 and 1968 as a heavyweight at Brigham Young University.

Christensen first became a head wrestling coach in 1968 at American Falls High School in Idaho. He moved to North Fremont High School in Ashton in 1971 where he won two Idaho state championships in 1978 and 1980. He moved to Ricks College in 1984 Bob is married. He and his wife Marcy have five children. Coach Christensen will stay on with BYU-Idaho in Ricks as a full-time faculty member.

AT 165# Neosho's 1# rated J.J. Homes gave the Panther followers something to cheer about as he pinned Lassen's David Hilliard in a spladdle at the 5:17 mark giving Neosho a 130-128 lead over Iowa Central.

Heading into the 174# finals trailing by 2 points in the team race, Iowa Central had a 1# rated wrestler taking the mat in Kenyatta Carter, who was a national runner-up in 2001. In the 2002 finals Carter faced 2# rated Brian Brittingham of Gloucester. Brittingham would take an early lead on take downs and back points, but Carter battled back to tie the score in regulation time at 13-13. The first period of over-time saw both wrestlers taking good shots, but Brittingham came up with the winning take down for the 15-13 overtime win. Carter finishes as the runner-up for the second year in a row,

Although Iowa Central still trailed by two points in the team race, the Tritons still had two wrestlers left, but the challenge was great! At 184# Willie Parks(IC) rated 2# faced the returning national champion Josh Birt from North Idaho, and at heavy weight, the Tritons faced tough odds where Cain Velasquez(IC) 6# rated faced Neosho's 2# rated Dean Taylor who owned a previous win over the IC wrestler.

Birt looking to become the 3rd wrestler of the night to join the elusive NJCAA double champion roster took to the mat with Parks. With the national champion still on the line, Iowa Central's Willie Parks went out and wrestled a strong match and scored a 9-4 victory over the defending champ 9-4 With this win, Iowa Central moved ahead in the team race 132-130 over Neosho, but the Tritons still had a head-to-head match where Neosho was favored. The Championship would come down to the heavy weight finals

While the heavyweights waited to determine the national championship, the 197# finalists took to the mat. Gloucester would go 3-for-3 in the finals as Nick Vinciquerra would decision Pat Bennett of SUNY Morrisville 6-5 for the title.

Now it was time fore the heavy weights! It what will be one of the closest finals in NJCAA history, Neosho's favored Taylor and IC's Velasquez face off for the individual and team title. The first period saw several attempts by both wrestlers to secure a takedown, but both were unsuccessful. In the 2nd period, IC's Valasquez would take down and secure an escape for a 1-0 lead by the end of the period. In the 3rd, Neosho's Taylor would take down and secure an escape but not before Valasquez compiled over one minute of riding time. Wit the score tied 1-1 both wrestlers worked for the decisive takedown, but when time expired, Valasquez still had riding time and Iowa Central had their first championship in 21 years.

Neosho's coach Terry Peck stated," This was a great tournament, and obviously we wanted to win the title, but this is was its all about, coming down to the final match of the finals." Coach Peck has led Neosho to a 7th, 1st, and 2nd place finish in 3 seasons. Of interest in the fact that Peck was an assistant at IC before taking the Neosho job.

A far as Coach Mark Ostrander goes and his take on the championship," Exhausted!  The past two years we were out of first by 20 points and we were just trying to hold on to 2nd place. This year, we have 4 in the finals and Neosho has 3 and NIC 4. We loose the first 2 in overtime, and Parks has to take on the returning national champ and Valasquez has to take on a kid that has beaten him. Knowing that we had tough matches ahead and with two loses we already had, I needed some Tums."

But, after it was all said and done Parks and Valasquez. Both won. Ostrander stated "Our kids really wrestled their hearts out. I think one of the keys to our title is that I told the kids the importance of extra points for advancement and bonus points. We brought 9 guys and walk away with 8 all-Americans, that a record for Iowa Central. But, we have 35 guys in the room and they all help in getting this title. I am so thankful for all the support that I have gotten from the IC fans, coaches, administration, and community. I wouldn't have done it with out them.
