College (Neb.) won its first national championship in record fashion,
scoring 193 points in the 49th Annual NAIA Wrestling National
Championships.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa. Dana College (Neb.) won its first national championship in record fashion, scoring 193 points in the 49th Annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships. They broke the previous tournament record of 180 points prior to tonight's championship matches. The previous record was set in 2002 by defending national champion and this year's runner-up Lindenwood University (Mo.). The 2006 event was contested in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
After falling in the championship match last year, Delrico Choates of the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) defeated Embry-Riddle University's (Ariz.) Richard Byrd 9-2. Choates finishes his junior season with a 30-1 record.
In the 133 lb. weight class, Jimmy Rollins of Dana won the national title when his opponent, McKendree College's (Ill.) Kyle Jahn had a medical default. Rollins fell in the championship match last year.
Joe Garcia of Menlo College (Calif.) captured the 141 lb. national title after a close 3-2 decision against Brad Cooper of Cumberlands (Ky.). Garcia finishes his senior season with a 30-5 record.
In the 149 lb. championship match, Lindenwood's (Mo.) Mark Dickman scored late in the match for a 7-2 win over Dana's Anthony Haukenberry. Haukenberry won the 2004 national title while he was competing for Montana State University-Northern.
Mike Rio of Lindenwood (Mo.) became the only wrestler to defend his national title when he captured the 157 lb. title over Hayden Harrison of Embry-Riddle University (Ariz.). Rio pinned Harrison late in the third period to capture his second national title; he also won the 149 lb. title last year. Rio pinned his way through the entire event this year, with his fastest pin of 23 seconds coming in the semifinals, and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2006 national championships.
After finishing as a runner-up last year in the 157 lb. weight class, Jake Dieffenbach of Lindenwood (Mo.) captured the title in the 165 lb. weight class. He defeated last year's national champion, Tyson Springer of Dickinson State University (N.D.) 9-4.
After being tied at 5-5 at the end of the third period, Newman University's (Kan.) Curtis Chenoweth defeated Mike Kummer of the University of Great Falls (Mont.) 7-5 in sudden victory.
Dana picked up another individual title when Willie Parks had a 16-8 decision over Rick Story of Southern Oregon University in the 184 lb. final. With the win, Parks finished 36-1 on the season and he was named the NWCA-NAIA Outstanding Wrestler of the Year.
Last year's third-place finisher, Justin Schlect of Dickinson State won the 197 lb. title after a 7-1 decision against Eric Flinchum of the Cumberlands (Ky.). It was the first loss of the season for Flinchum in 24 matches.
In the final match, Mikhail Abdul-Latif of Simon Fraser University (B.C.) pinned Alex Becerra of Lindenwood (Mo.) in 1:10 for the 285 lb. national title.
Lindenwood (Mo.) finished in second place in the team competition with 164 points. They were followed by Cumberlands (Ky.) with 105 points and Dickinson State (N.D.) with 95.5 points. Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) and Southern Oregon finished fifth and sixth, respectively, with 83 and 82 points.
Dana had all 12 of their wrestlers finish no lower than seventh place in their respective weight classes. Overall, the Vikings had two wrestlers capture national titles while Lindenwood (Mo.) had three individual champions, the most in the tournament. It is the first team national championship in any sport for the school from Blair, Nebraska.
The 2006 Coach of the Year Award was presented to Steve Costanzo of Dana (Neb.), while Northwestern College (Iowa) was given the Team Sportsmanship Award. The top four finishers in each weight class earn all-America honors while the fifth through eighth place finishers receive honorable mention status.

Looks to Capture Their First National Championship
SIOUX CITY, Iowa. Dana College (Neb.) scored 117 points in the first day of competition at the 49th Annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships. The Vikings lead the 26-team field with Lindenwood University (Mo.) sitting in second-place at 95.5 points. The 2006 event is being contested in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dana led by nine points after the morning session by and then extended their advantage in the afternoon. The Vikings have all 12 of their wrestlers still competing in the event and seven of them are in the semifinal matches. Lindenwood, the defending national champions, also has seven wrestlers in the semifinals.
Two individuals return to Sioux City to defend their 2005 national titles. Mike Rio of Lindenwood (Mo.), the 2005 champion in the 149 lb class, advanced in the 157 lb. class. He pinned Brad Lies of Newman University (Kan.) in 23 seconds, the fastest pin of the day, to advance to the semifinals. Tyson Springer, the 165 lb. defending national champion from Dickinson State University (N.D.), advanced to Saturday's semifinal matches after defeating T.J. Stuart of William Penn University (Iowa) 10-4 in the quarterfinals. Also advancing to the semifinals in the 149 lb. class is Anthony Haukenberry of Dana (Neb.), who captured the 2004 national title in his weight class.
The University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) sits in third place with 69.5 points while Southern Oregon University is in fourth with 69 points. Dickinson State University (N.D.) has 61 points and Missouri Valley College recorded 55 on the day.
Competition resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the championship bracket semifinal and consolation bracket matches. The championship matches begin Saturday at 7 p.m. For more information and complete results, visit the NAIA website at www.naia.org.

Following the completion of Saturday's NAIA Central Region Wrestling
Tournament, several wrestlers were selected as NAIA Central Region
Scholar-Athletes. The criteria for the award was that a wrestler
must be at least a sophomore with a minimum cumulative GPA of
3.25 and must have participated in a minimum of 12 matches/tournaments,
including the regional meet or have previously qualified for nationals.

Muskogee, OK The Northwestern College wrestling team competed at the NAIA Regional Tournament Saturday, Feb. 19, hosted by Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla. Northern
Montana Won the NAIA North Region
Northern won its 8th consecutive regional title and 12th over-all.
Brian Luna was named the tournament's "Outstanding Wrestler"
and Coach Ray was named the "Region Coach of The Year".
For the most part the regional was a success with Northern winning
7 of the 10 weight classes and taking two seconds, one third and
one fourth. Emory Willson failed to qualify for the NAIA National
Tournament placing 5th, in his place will be Brian Fritchman.
Fritchman will be wrestling at 184 and qualified in November but
was unable to compete in the Regional Tournament this week.
Dustyn Azure, Aaron Jensen and Chase Gormley turned in some outstanding
performances and still have not reached what they are capable
of achieving.
The National Tournament is scheduled for March 4-5 in Sioux City,
IA at the Tyson Event Center. Northern will have to wrestle very
well to place in the top three and bring home a team trophy.

NAIA National Championship Finals
Saturday night at the Swarthout Field House in Great Falls the wrestlers of Montana State University - Northern were crowned national champions with 169.5 points (the second most points scored in a NAIA tournament). This was the sixth national title for Northern and the fourth for coach David Ray. Five individual wrestlers from Northern stood atop the podium at the end of the competition the third time this feat has been accomplished (1958 by Mankato State and 1981 Central Oklahoma). They were:

Three additional Lights achieved All American honors. They were:

Emmett Willson was named the outstanding wrestler for the tournament for the second consecutive year and Caleb Schaeffer for the second conscecutive year earned an award as an academic All American carrying a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
For the fourth time Coach Ray was named the "Coach of Year", for the NAIA. No other coach has won the award more times.
This was the third consecutive year that Northern has hosted the National tournament in Gt. Falls. I cannot adequately describe the effort necessary to make an event like that happen. I can't begin to name all the people that voluteered to make it a huge success, but Walt Currie deserves special recognition. He has served as tournament director for each of the three years and is responsible for its great success. Thank you to Walt and all the volunteers.
