The University of Iowa wrestling team collected its second straight national team title at the 2009 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, MO

ST. LOUIS, MO -- Despite crowning no individual champions, the University of Iowa wrestling team collected its second straight national team title at the 2009 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, MO, Saturday night. The Hawkeyes scored 96.5 points, edging runner-up Ohio State by 4.5 points, to record the school's 22nd NCAA team title. That is the closest margin of victory since Iowa won the 1999 team title by two points, and only the second time in school history that the Hawkeyes won the NCAA title without an individual champion. Iowa also accomplished that feat in 1978. It is also the first year that the Hawkeyes have not crowned an individual champion since 2006.

"This championship was won this morning," said Hawkeye Head Coach Tom Brands. "We had a lot of guys that came through for us. We have five all-Americans who are all back next year. It's bittersweet with Brent's (Metcalf) match, but our fans love championships."

Iowa's lone finalist - junior Brent Metcalf - was upset in the 149-pound finals by #3 seed Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State, 11-6. Metcalf, who won the 2008 NCAA 149-pound title and was the top seed for this year's tournament at that weight class, saw his 69-match winning streak snapped in the finals. A team point was deducted from Iowa's team score for unsportsmanlike conduct after the match. Metcalf ends the season with a 37-1 record, and has a 72-2 career mark. Both losses are to Caldwell.

The Hawkeyes crowned a total of five all-Americans in Metcalf and juniors Daniel Dennis (133-7th), Ryan Morningstar (165-3rd), Phillip Keddy (184-4th) and Dan Erekson (Hwt.-4th). The tournament's six-session attendance total of 97,111 set the all-time record for the event.

Iowa ends the 2009 season winning two straight NCAA and Big Ten titles. The Hawkeye posted a perfect 24-0 dual meet record, going 8-0 in Big Ten duals.

NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Organizers expect to top 92,000 in total attendance

ST. LOUIS March 16, 2005 Attendance is on the rise at this year's NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Organizers expect to top 92,000 in total attendance, surpassing last year's number of 87,675. Much of the jump can be attributed to a sharp increase in local ticket sales, an outgrowth of an innovative grassroots marketing effort orchestrated by the event's local organizing committee (LOC), which includes the St. Louis Sports Commission and the University of Missouri.

Seeking to attract more area fans to the Championships particularly those connected to amateur wrestling the LOC implemented a group sales program. Groups of 15 or more had the opportunity to purchase tickets for $5 or $10 per ticket depending on the session they wished to attend. Organizers targeted youth wrestling clubs and teams through direct mail, appearances at events, and advertising. Several area companies also stepped forward to purchase blocks of group tickets for their employees or to be donated to local youth organizations. In addition to the group sales effort, the LOC introduced a limited number of night and weekend packages. These packages were geared for local fans who wanted to see multiple sessions of the tournament, but could not attend the entire event.

Thanks to the various initiatives, the number of non all-session tickets sold to the 2005 Championships has quadrupled from 2004. Meanwhile, the number of all-session tickets sold to the general public is up as well. The 2005 Championships have seen a 13 percent increase in general public all-session ticket sales from a year ago.

"As a three-time host of the Championships, we want the tournament and the sport of college wrestling to thrive," said Chris Roseman, the Sports Commission's vice president of event acquisition & management. "It was important to us to take a proactive approach and market the event aggressively in order to increase attendance and expand the tournament's base of support. We talk a lot about our commitment to building the Championships and strengthening the sport, and this is a prime example of how St. Louis wants to be not just a host, but a great marketing partner and ally for college wrestling."

The 75th NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships take place March 17-19, 2005 at Savvis Center in Downtown St. Louis. Tickets are still available and may be purchased by logging on to <http://www.ticketmaster.com/>www.ticketmaster.com, calling 314-241-1888, or visiting any Ticketmaster ticket center, including the Savvis Center box office. St. Louis is the first city to host the tournament in back-to-back years.

15,000 Visitors Expected For 2005 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships

EVENT GENERATES ESTIMATED $10 MILLION IN ECONOMIC IMPACT

ST. LOUIS HOSTS TWO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NEXT THREE WEEKS

ST. LOUIS - March 14, 2005 - On Thursday, they will be everywhere. People walking the streets wearing Oklahoma State orange, Iowa gold, and Minnesota maroon. Nearly 15,000 of them will stay at downtown hotels, eat at local restaurants, and, according to St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association Chief Economist Bryan Bezold, pump $10 million into the local economy.
Thousands of college wrestling fans, student-athletes, coaches, and media converge on St. Louis this week for the 2005 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Savvis Center. They'll create a festive scene downtown during the three-day tournament March 17-19 and account for more than 12,000 hotel room nights.

This is the third time this decade that the tournament has been held in the Gateway City.  In 2000, St. Louis set the event's all-time total attendance record. More than 87,000 fans passed through the turnstiles during the 2004 tournament. This year, local organizers are expecting more than 90,000 fans to attend the six sessions at Savvis Center. St. Louis is the first city to host back-to-back Championships in the 75-year history of the event.

The NCAA Wrestling Championships begin a fabulous three-week period for St. Louis. With the NCAA Final Four coming up April 2 & 4 at the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis has the rare distinction of hosting two NCAA championships in the same season.  This memorable stretch culminates with the Cardinals' final opening day at Busch Stadium April 8 the day the Redbirds raise their National League Championship Pennant.

"This is one of the most exciting chapters in St. Louis sports history," said Frank Viverito, president of the St. Louis Sports Commission. "With the NCAA Wrestling Championships, NCAA Final Four and Cardinals Opening Day all taking place within a three-week window, it doesn't get much better than this."

The Sports Commission and the University of Missouri are co-hosts of the 2005 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The independent non-profit Sports Commission spearheaded the area's effort to bring the event to St. Louis.
