NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships

Lopers Win First National Title in D-II!

Garcia is Outstanding, Bauer Honored

By Johnnie Johnson

Cedar Rapids, IA. —In a back-and-forth race between the top two teams in the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships held in the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, the second ranked Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney came out on top of the scramble for the title to edge top ranked Minnesota State-Mankato by a half point for their first national wrestling title.  The Lopers, guided by head coach Marc Bauer, won UNK's first team title in any sport and D-II competition since the Kearney State College softball team won the NAIA titles in 1987 and 1990.  The Lopers who finished second in 2003, 2006, and 2007 when they were the top team and host, we not to be denied in 2008!

In the early rounds of the national tournament, the top rated MSU-K looked to have the race well in hand after the championship semi-finals and quarter finals wrestle backs, as the Maverick’s sent three wrestlers to the finals and held a fifteen point leaded heading into the afternoon all-American round.  The Lopers trailing after going two and two in the semi’s, knew they had to step it up if they were going to have a chance at the national title, and step it up they did!  On the strength of four UNK’s wrestlers who fought back to become consolation champions, and two additional Lopers placing eight, the Lopers held a 100.5-100 point lead after the medal round.  The group that helped UNK retake the lead included consolation champions and seniors Joe Ellenberger (157 lbs.) and Jeff Rutledge (141 lbs.), sophomores Ryan Etherton (149 lbs.) and Marty Usman (174 lbs.). Junior Keenan McCurdy (165 lbs.) and sophomore Derek Ross (197 lbs.); were the eighth place finishers for the Lopers giving them eight all-Americans.

In a race that was won by a half point, any match for UNK or MSU-M could have made the difference in the team title.  In the first round of the tournament the Maverick’s heavyweight Brady Wilson won by a tech-fall (17-0) which would given his team 1.5 points, but it was recorded as a fall and MSU-M was awarded two teams points.  The Maverick’s head coach and a person of integrity, Jim Makovsky, notified the scorers about the error and had it corrected.  The third place matches were close and crucial for UNK as well.  In the consolation finals Rutledge won his third place bout 4-3 over Shane Valko of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Next, Etherton edged conference-rival Joey Deaguero of Adams State, 4-2, with Ellenberger winning 2-1 over Upper Iowa's Travis Eggers in a first tiebreaker.  Ellenberger reached the third place match with Eggers only after a sudden victory win, 10-8, against Muhammad Abdur-Rahman of Ashland. The last 3rd place match for UNK saw the Lopers’ Usman edging Josh Shields of Mercyhurst, 3-2, in UNK's final third place match.

The scene was now set for the finals with the top rated Mavericks trailing by half a point to the Lopers, but MSU-M did hold an advantage with three finalists to UNK’s two finalist. Another battle was brewing for the third and fourth place trophies as UNO, the winner of three out of the last four championships held a two-and-a-half point lead over Pitt-Johnstown 85-5 to 83.  The legendary D-II coaches Mike Denney’s Maverick team had three finalists and Pat Pecora’s Mountain Cats had two finalists to battle for the bronze.

The 125-pound final may have been the first match of the night, but may have given some insight of who would come out on top of the team race.  In the 125 final MSU-M would put out a senior, Nick Smith (Yankton, SD) a four-time South Dakota state champ, two-time AA, and a four-time national qualifier.  Smith’s opponent would be another Maverick from UNO, red-shirt sophomore Cody Garcia (Hutchinson, KS), a three-time state champ, two-time AA, and a D-II champion in 2006.  Garcia made the finals with three falls having wrestled a total of four minutes and fifty-three seconds. UNK got a little help from in-State rival UNO when Cody Garcia won the 125 lbs. national title over Mankato’s Nick Smith, 8-2.  Since UNO was out of the title race, maybe this was a little payback to Coach Bauer for the championships of 2004, when the Lopers' 197-pounder Jeff Sylvester won a individual title prevented North Dakota State from scoring any additional points in the finals and preserving UNO lead and championship. Garcia would not only receive the most fall award, but the North Central Region OW would also been tabbed as the 2008 NCAA D-II “Outstanding Wrestler.”   For Garcia, this title was even sweeter than the one he won in 2006, as he missed all of last year with a knee injury.  "That's the biggest thing. I had to battle back through a lot of adversity," Garcia said. "I had to build up to this one, mentally and physically."

In the next finals match at 133-pounbds, UNK would put out the first of their two finalists in Brett Allgood (Bennington, NE).  Allgood, as senior, brought some great credentials into the finals including being a four-time undefeated prep champ, a 2004 JUCO champ, D-II champion in 2006, and a three-time West Regional Champion and D-II all-American.  Allgood’s opponent, also a senior, was the University of Indianapolis’s Shane Perkey (Elkhart, IN).  Perky was a two-time state placer in Indiana, a Cadet Greco-Roman runner-up, a four-time D-II AA having placed fourth on three previous occasions before making it to the championship bout.  Shane entered the finals with a 38-5 record on the year, and a 148 career win which is a school record.  Allgood would keep the Lopers title hopes alive with a 5-3 decision over the U of I’s Perky. With seven various prep and collegiate titles Allgood stated,” Of all the things I've won in my wrestling career, this second National title means the most to me."

Minnesota State still had a chance to take the lead and the title with back-to-back finalist at 157 and 165.  The second of three finalist for MSU-M was senior Jason Rhoten (Mantorville, MN), a Minnesota State champ, four-time AA, two time finalist, 31 match winning streak, MSU-M all-time career win leader with 136 wins, would bring a 40-2 season record into the finals.  Rhoten’s opponent Antonio Guerra (Toledo, OH), a red-shirt senior who is no stranger to the finals.  Guerra from the University of Findlay is also a four-time AA, three-time finalist, two-time national champions, and with his semi-final victory out him at 35-9 on the season and also made him the all-time career win leader at Findlay with 123 wins.  Certainly one of the premier bouts of the night, Rhoten would down the two-time champion, Guerra, 3-2 for an individual title of his own.

With both schools getting wins by decision, UNK still held a half-point lead over MSU-M heading into the 165-pound match.  At 165, the Mavericks would put out top ranked Andy Pickar (Brainerd, MN), a two-time Minnesota prep champ, three time AA and region champions, and a two-time finalist having placed second.  His opponent would be one of two Mercyhurst College’s finalist, senior Hudson Harrison (McKean, PA), who is a four-time national qualifier, and a first-time AA.  Pickar would dominate Harrison for an 8-2 victory and his first individual national title, and gave MSU a three and a half point lead over UNK.  Pickar had Harrison on his back and the end of the third period and was getting back points as time expires, but the referee would only get a one-count in before the buzzer rang.  If Pickar would have gotten the two-count he would have increased his lead from 8-2, to 10-2, a major decision which would have given MSU a four and a half point lead forcing UNK’s heavy weight Dlagnev to win by more that a decision for the title.  As it stood heading into the heavy weight final, Dlagnev would only need a decision to regain the team lead and the title.

In the heavy weight match UNK was trailing MSU, but they would put out a senior returning national champion for the Lopers against a sophomore from UCO making his first national appearance.  Tervel Dlagnev (Arlington, TX) is a four-time AA, three-time finalist, and returning champion.  Tervel’s opponent was Dustin Finn (Moore, OK) who is a first time AA, was the Midwest Regional Champions, and sported a 29-5 record heading into the final match.  Dlagnev, arguably one on the top collegiate heavy weight in the nation seemed to be the odds on favorite and UNK would most likely get their title.  However, The fourth-ranked Finn, who advanced to the finals with two overtime wins and a 3-1 decision, gave the top-rated Dlagnev all he could handle in a match that went to the wire.

Finn broke a scoreless tie six seconds into the second period with an escape, but two stalling warnings gave Dlagnev a penalty point that tied it in the final 30 seconds of that stanza.  Dlagnev escaped quickly in the third period to go ahead 2-1 and he added a clinching takedown with one second left off a desperation Finn takedown attempt.  It was only the second time this season that an opponent had stayed within five points of Dlagnev, who finished 38-0 in winning his second straight title.  Finn, a sophomore from Moore, finished 29-6 in joining his father (John) and brother (Chris) as a UCO All-American.

Dlagnev finished his career on a 70-match win streak. "I liked that the team title was up to me to get. That's why I wrestle...for the team," said Dlagnev. "I wrestled well, but wasn't satisfied with my performance. I wanted to dominate more.” The four-time All-American and two-time national champion added, "I didn't feel any pressure throughout the tournament; only excitement."  Allgood and Dlagnev join the Ali Elias (1990-91) as the only Lopers to win two national titles. Dlagnev also joins Elias, Sylvester and Bryce Abbey as the only UNK wrestlers to be four-time All-Americans.

In the 149 title match, UNO would put out the second of three finalist in red-shirt junior Todd Meneely (Omaha, NE), a four-time high school champion, transfer from the University of Iowa, who is the returning national champions with a season record of 22-2 and a career record of 57-5.  Meneely would face one of two Western State College finalist senior Camille DuPont (Leadville, CO), a four-time West Region champion, and two-time all-American.  Meneely became a back-to-back national champion, posting a 9-3 victory over Western State's Camille Dupont in the final at 149.  "I'm not completely satisfied," Meneely said. "In a couple of my matches, I could have opened up more, but I didn't. My goal was to major, tech fall or pin all my opponents in the national tournament. I didn't do that."

UNO’s last finalist at 174 would mark the start of back-to-back finalist for Pitt-Johnstown.In the 174 final UNO’s junior Ross Taplin (Abilene, KS), a three time prep champion, three-time national qualifier, two-time AA having placed third in 2006, brought a regional champ title and a 29-5 record into the finals.  Taplin would wrestle UPJ’s senior Albert Miles (Canonsburg, PA), who placed 5th in the class 3-A division in Pennsylvania, also placing 5th in the D-II tournament in 2006, and is an East Regional Champion.  The Mountain Cat would down the Maverick 5-2, giving Miles an individual title for Pitt-Johnstown.  After Tallinn’s loss UNO coach Mike Denney stated, "We really competed!  We have six All-Americans and return all six. We really thought we had a chance to make a run at the national title."  The Mavericks compiled 93 ½ points, good enough for third, and only 15 point out from first place

Limestone’s second-ranked sophomore Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.), and East Regional Champion would meet UPJ’s senior Mike Corcetti for the 184-pound title. Corcetti (Export, PA), place third in the 3-A class in the PSHAA prep tournament, is a four-time all-American having placed 4th twice, and was a finalist in 2006 and 2008.  Corcetti would have to settle for two-runner-up titles, as Scanlon would go on to win the match 5-2.  Dan is the first Limestone wrestler to win a national championship, and Scanlon is only a sophomore!  Scanlan and fellow Saint Trey Moss (Red Bank, S.C.) earned All-American honors for their performances at the national tournament. Moss finished eighth at 285 lbs.  The two AA’s helped Limestone to a top 15 finish in the NCAA’s.

At 197, Chadron State’s Josh Majerus (Albion, NE), is a two-time all-American and finalist having paced second last season, and is a 2008 West Region champion carried the number one ranking into the finals against Western State College second finalist, a red-shirt freshman Donovan McMahill (Lochbuie, CO). McMahill is a two-time Colorado state champ.  Majerus would take the title with an 8-3 win, but had to hold of a late charge by the freshman.

Majerus, who defeated McMahill twice this season before Saturday’s final, never trailed in the championship match. He led 4-0 after the first period and enhanced his lead to 6-0 after two periods. In the final period, McMahill, a red-shirt freshman, earned three points from an escape and a takedown, but Majerus countered with an escape of his own and another point for riding time to earn the 8-3 decision.  “I knew that I would have to score early on him because the other two matches we had he scored most of his points in the third period,” Majerus said. “So I was glad I got out on him early in the match and then I was able to hold him off.”  "I knew (Upper Iowa's Ryan Phillips, last year's national champion) graduated, so I knew this was my chance," Majerus said. "I worked hard in the off-season for this and it paid off."

The host school, Upper Iowa University, put on a first class championship tournament.  UIU and their staff are to be commended for all of the hard work that they did in hosting the NCAA D-II 2008 Championships!  The NCAA Championships will move to Houston, Texas, in 2009.  A special thanks to Upper Iowa and the D-II SID’s for their contributions to this story

Central Oklahoma Win Seventh NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships

Bronchos Have One Champ, Four Runners Up

Kearney, Neb. –  The Central Oklahoma Bronchos are back on top of the Division II wrestling world. Led by eight All-Americans, UCO won the 2007 NCAA D2 wrestling championships in Kearney, Neb., by scoring 124.5 points.

Leading the two-day meet from start to finish, UCO was well ahead of runner up Nebraska-Kearney (108.5) and three-time defending national champ Nebraska-Omaha (67.5).

Rounding out the top seven were Minnesota State (63.0), Adams State (58.5), Chadron State (58.0) and Pittsburgh-Johnstown (56.5).

Central Oklahoma, with eight NAIA national team titles to its credit, won D2 crowns from 1992-96 and then again in 2002 and 2003.

UCO's point total is the most by a winning team since the '94 Bronchos tallied 127.25.

"It started Friday morning for us and I couldn't be more proud of how our team performed," said UCO head coach David James. "It was a tough finals but fortunately we were in a situation to have the team race already wrapped up."

At 141 lbs., the Bronchos Kyle Evans capped off an unbeaten season (39-0) as he edged Doug Surra of West Liberty State, 3-1 (SV), in the semifinals and then dominated Shippensburg's Steven Fittery, 7-0, in the finals.

A three-time All-American, Evans has now won 61 of his last 63 matches.

Finishing second for UCO were Tyler Zukerman (125 lbs.), Jared Henning (133 lbs.), Jason Leavitt (157 lbs.) and Josh LeadingFox (Hwt.).

Also for UCO, Shea Timothy was fourth at 149 lbs., Jared Hess was third at 184 lbs. and Heath Jolley was fifth at 197 lbs.

Zukerman, Henning and Jolley each came into the meet unranked and were big reasons why UCO had such a strong weekend.

"We had a fantastic tournament. All ten guys scored points and we just peaked at the right time. That's a credit to our kids. We had some bumps and bruises along the road but what a time to wrestle your best," said James, the 2007 national coach of the year.

Among other finalists, Tony Guerra of Findlay won his second straight title, albeit it at a different weight. The 2006 149 lbs. champ didn't allow Leavitt to escape and won the 157 lbs. finals, 2-1 (tiebreaker).

Earning a third gold medal -- and Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet -- was J.D. Naig of UNO. After a tough 7-5 win over Western State's Larry Wilbanks in the semis, Naig dominated Michael Jackson of Indianapolis, 13-1, in the finals.

UNO also celebrated a title at 149 lbs. as top-ranked Todd Meneely edged Mike Rogers of Carson-Newman, 3-2. The surprising Rogers earned the "most falls in least of amount time" award by having three in a total of 11:20.

A pair of schools, Chadron State and Upper Iowa, enjoyed their first-ever national titles in D2 wrestling. At 165 lbs., the Eagles' Brett Hunter pinned top ranked Andy Pickar of Minnesota State at 2:37.

Three classes later, the Peacocks' Ryan Phillips majored Chadron's Josh Majerus, 12-0. This is UIU's second year as an NCAA Division II school. The hosts of the 2008 championships would have an impressive 8th place team finish (51.5).

Phillips joined Adams State's Jared Deaguero (184 lbs.) as two of the champs to not give up any offensive points in the tournament.

Another dominating performance was turned in by UNK's Tervel Dlagnev. In winning his first national title, the Texan had two falls and two major decision victories.

In the finals, he pinned long time rival LeadingFox at 3:16. Considered the second best heavyweight in the nation, regardless of class, Dlagnev ends the year with a 49-1 mark.

Also exciting the home crowd was 125 lbs. champ Trevor Charbonneau. He capped a two-time All-American career by scoring a late takedown to beat UCO's Zukerman, 5-2.

University of Nebraska at Omaha is set to defend the 2005 Division II Team Title

University of Nebraska at Omaha is set to defend the Division II team title as it hosts the 2005 Championships on March 11. Also defending a title is UNO's Les Sigman who won the heavyweight class by default in 2004 and also clinched the team title for the Mavericks. Augustana, qualifying all 10 wrestlers for the Championships, has a little momentum and high hopes for the team's first title.
