Augsburg Claims 10th NCAA Division III Wrestling Crown
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa . . . When it comes to winning NCAA Division III wrestling championships, Wartburg College head coach Jim Miller never gets tired of the feeling it invokes.
“We’re very excited,” the 18th year head coach of the Knights said Saturday, March 6, after his 2008-09 team successfully defended what the 2007-08 crew had done just one year before. “(This team) overcame a little bit of adversity during the year, and it came down to the fact that everyone bought in into what we trying to tell them.”
The Knights, gaining the school’s seventh all time and second successive national championship, totaled 117.5 points. Augsburg College of Minnesota was second with 105, while UW-La Crosse was third at 87. Meet tri-host Coe College took fourth with 78.5.
Individually, the upset theme that pervaded the tournament continued in the championship round. Four No. 4 or lower seeds stood atop their respective weight class awards podiums. The University of Dubuque’s Evan Brown, the 174-pound champion and first for the Spartans since 1979, topped the list at No. 8, while Luther College’s Zac Bartlett capped his run through the 133-pound weight class with the championship as a No. 6 seed. The other two members of the group were St. John’s University of Minnesota’s Minga Batsukh and UW-La Crosse’s Matt Mauseth, each of whom were No. 4 seeds. Wartburg 157-pounder Aaron Wernimont and the Eagles’ heavyweight Dan Laurent each successfully repeated as champions.
Top-seeds Jake Oster of Elmhurst (125), Justin Hanson of Wartburg (165), and Michael Wilcox of Delaware Valley (184), and No. 2 seed Jared Massey of Augsburg (197) also captured national championships.
Awards, presented by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, went to Delaware Valley's Wilcox (Outstanding Wrestler), Augsburg 125-pound fourth-place finisher Seth Flodeen (Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time), United States Merchant Marine Academy head coach Greg Ilaria (Rookie Coach of the Year) and Wartburg head coach Jim Miller (Coach of the Year) and assistant coach Eric Keller (Assistant Coach of the Year).

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships have come to a close at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
Augsburg College (135.5) won the 2007 team title for tenth time in school history. Wartburg College (99.5) finished second, followed by third place UW-LaCrosse (92.5), Luther College (86.0) and The College of New Jersey (46.5) round out the top five.
Augsburg College senior Marcus LeVesseur capped off his flawless career with a 3-0 win over the #6 seed Michael Guenther of The College of New Jersey, ending his career with a record of 155-0.
Returning All-American and top-seeded Matt Pyle of Luther College was voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the 2007 tournament by the coaches following his 149 pound pin of fourth seeded Jason Roush of Mt. St. Joseph in the championship match. Pyle also pinned his first two opponents of the tournament at 2:31 and 0:31 of those respective bouts.
Coach of the Year honors went to Jeff Swenson of Augsburg following their team title, three national champions (141 lbs., 157 lbs., 165 lbs.), two second place finishes (125 lbs., 133 lbs.), one fourth place finish (149 lbs.), two fifth place finishes (174 lbs., 285 lbs.), and one eighth place finish (197 lbs.).

2007 NCAA Divison III Wrestling Championships Session I Recap

Dubuque, IA - The first session of the Division III Wrestling Championships have concluded at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Each of the weight classes has completed Preliminary Rounds 1 and 2, as well as Consolation Rounds 1 and 2.
In the team competition, Wartburg College has the early lead with a total score of 19, followed by other double-digit scorers Luther College (16.5), Augsburg College (14.5), UW-LaCrosse (12), and The College of New Jersey (11).
Marcus LeVesseur, Augsburg College senior, remained unbeaten by pinning Loras College's Dave Early at 1:21 of their first round match. In the 125 pound weight class Brian Clement of Coe College remained in the Championship Bracket with a pin of #7 Jake Oster. At 133, Justin Seifried of Ithaca advanced with a win over #5 Adam Johnson of North Central. At 141, Myanganbayar Batsukh of St. Johns provided the largest upset over #3 seed Paul LeBlanc of SUNY Cortland 10-9. The 184 pound weight class saw the most seeded competitors fall. Elliot Smith (#5, Springfield), Jay Figgins (#6, Loras), and George Lynaugh (#7, Augsburg) each lost their opening matches.

title and fourth since 1996 Saturday at the Five Flags Center
in Dubuque. The Knights outpaced arch rival Augsburg 156.5 to
140.5. Each team had four individual titleists with Brockport
State and Wisconsin-LaCrosse each notching one.
Augsburg's 31 total individual national titles breaks the all-time
record of 28 held by Montclair State.

Saturday with an impressive performance in the semifinal round
of the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championships at the Five
Flags Center in Dubuque. The Knights increased their lead over
second-place Augsburg to 13 points (135.5-122.5). Augsburg has
five wrestlers in the championship finals. No other team qualified
more than one wrestler to tonight's championship round.
Luther (66.5 points), Delaware Valley (54.0), and Simpson (50.5)
round out the top five teams, and have one finalist each.
125 -- Cortland State's Jason Peck scored the first victory of
the tournament over a number one seed, Tom Prairie of Williams,
10-6. #2 Matt Shankey (Augsburg) defeated Simpson's Dustin Brewer,
3-2.
133 -- The top two seeds, #1 Ozzie Saxson (Wartburg) and #2 Mark
Matzek (Augsburg) advanced. Saxson beat Tenkoran Agyeman (Oswego

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Wartburg recovered from a sluggish, but effective
team performance in Session One Friday to regain the lead from
Augsburg at the halfway point of the 2004 NCAA Division III National
Wrestling Championships. The two wrestling powers separated themselves
from the rest of the field as the Knights own first place (81.5
points) and the Augies have secured second (76.5 points).
Wartburg moved a tournament-high eight wrestlers through to the
championship semifinals. Augsburg advanced six in the championship
bracket, as each team had nine wrestlers earn All-America honors.
The battle for place three through 11 include nine teams separated
by only 16.5 points.
College of New Jersey currently stands in third place at 40.5
points, with Luther only a half-point behind in fourth (40.0).
125 - Top-seeded Tom Prairie (Williams) turned a 5-2 Justin McClintock
(Wartburg) lead into a win by fall at the 4:07 mark to move through
to the semifinals. #5 Jason Peck (TCNJ) defeated Terry Morgan
(Loras) 8-6. #3 Simpson's Dustin Brewer earned his second win
by fall of the day pinning Mitchell Marcks (King's) at 1:32. #2

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The two biggest team names in NCAA Division III
wrestling did not disappoint in session one of the 2004 NCAA III
National Wrestling Championships at the Five Flags Center. Augsburg
and Wartburg sit in first and second place, respectively at the
first intermission Friday.
Augsburg tallied 18.5 points and moved seven on its nine qualifiers
ahead in the championship bracket. Wartburg kept nine of its capacity
10 qualifiers alive in the winner's bracket, compiling 17.0 points.
Luther (12.0 points), College of New Jersey (11.0), and Delaware
Valley (8.0) round out the top five in the team standings.
125 lbs. - Loras' Terry Morgan scored the only first-round
upset, knocking off the #4 seed Matt Vos from St. John's (Minn.),
3-2. The other seven seeded wrestlers moved into tonight's quarterfinals.
133 lbs. - Brian Boland from Ursinus scored the bracket's only
upset defeating the #6 seed Nick Morphew of Lawrence, 5-4. The
