American University Wrestling's Fittery Earns Second EIWA Wrestler of the Week Honor
#5 Steve Fittery has been named the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association's Wrestler of the Week after capturing the 157 lbs. title at the 47th Annual Midlands Championships. Fittery won all five of his bouts at the tournament by bonus points and was crowned Champion of Champions.
Fittery, the top-seeded wrestler at 157 lbs., was dominate over the course of the tournament, picking up three major decisions, one tech-fall and one fall. The junior cruised through the first day of competition with two major decisions before tech-falling Clairon's Hadley Harrison in the second period, 17-1, to advance to the semifinals. Fittery then returned to the mat on the second day with a 15-5 major decision over fifth-seeded Keegan Davis from Oregon State to earn himself a place in the finals. In the finals, Fittery made quick work of second-seeded Jake Patacsil from the Boiler Elite Wrestling Club to earn his first Midlands Championship by fall 2:52 into the first period.
At the tournament's conclusion, Fittery was named the Champion of Champions, an honor voted on by all 10 Midlands Champions. Fittery is the first wrestler in American history to be named Champion of Champions and the third to capture a Midlands Championship. He was also the only EIWA wrestler to win an individual championship at this year's tournament.
Fittery was also named EIWA Wrestler of the Week on November 23 after being named Outstanding Wrestler at the Keystone Classic. Fittery won three matches to claim the 157 lbs. title at the tournament, including two by tech-fall and one by major decision.
The American University wrestling team will return to action on Friday, January 8, with its first home dual of the season against Navy at 7:00 p.m.
2007 EIWA Tournament Update: Whalen Falls in Consolation Semifinals
Scarlet Knights Will Await Announcement of NCAA Championship Wild Card Qualifiers
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (March 3, 2007) - Junior Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) fell in the semifinals of the consolation bracket to University of Pennsylvania's Matt Herrington at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships on Saturday morning at Case Gym on the campus of East Stroudsburg University.
Whalen, along with the rest of the Scarlet Knights who earn a spot on the podium, will await the announcement of NCAA wild card berths to be included in the awards ceremony.
Herrington tallied nearly four minutes of riding time in the 6-2 decision to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships to be held March 15-17 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hill, Mich.
Information regarding wild card berths will be available following the tournament. The EIWA Championship finals are slated for 4:00 p.m.
2005 EIWA Championships Set To Start Friday Morning
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 101st EIWA Championships is set to get underway
Friday at Alumni Hall at the United States Naval Academy. The first two
sessions will take place Friday, starting at 11:00 a.m., and 6:00 p.m.,
respectively. Saturday's semifinal and final rounds start at 11:00 a.m.,
and 6:30 p.m.
Preseeds and brackets were announced on Thursday with Cornell and Lehigh
each claiming three top seeds. The two teams figure to battle it out
intensely for the team title as Lehigh enters the tournament ranked
fifth in the country, but Cornell is the tournament's top seed. The Big
Red's Travis Lee (133), Dustin Manotti (149) and Tyler Baier (184)
earned Cornell's top seeds, while Lehigh's Cory Cooperman (141), Troy
Letters (165) and Jon Trenge (197) earned the Hawks' top seed.
The Mids figure to battle for third, but will have to rely on their
depth to challenge for the team title. Head coach Bruce Burnett has
eight wrestlers seeded in the top six, but none seeded first. However,
Nate Gulosh (141) is seeded second and Sam Gray (133), John Cox (149)
and Tanner Garrett (HWT) are seeded third.
Battling the Mids for third will be traditional power Pennsylvania and
upstart American. The Quakers have the heavyweight's top seed in Matt
Feast, who is a two-time EIWA Champion. 141-pounder Doug McGraw was the
individual champ at that weight class a year ago. The Eagles, meanwhile,
have some solid performers, including the top seed at 157 pounds in
junior transfer Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov. Abdurakhmanov has had a stellar
season and is ranked as high as sixth in the country. The Eagles' head
coach Mark Cody also has standouts in Josh Glenn (No. 2 seed at 184) and
Daniel Waters (No. 4 seed at 174 pounds).
Other standouts include Andy Roy of Rutgers (174 pounds; sixth in the
country) and Army's Phillip Simpson at 149 pounds. Simpson is attempting
to become Army's first three-time All-American.
The toughest weight classes appear to be 174 pounds, where as many as
five wrestlers have been ranked in the nation's top 25 and at
heavyweight, also where five wrestlers have entered the nation's top 25.
