2003-04 New England Intercollegiate Wrestling News
Editor's Notes: Congratulations are in order for Coast Guard coach Steve Eldridge who will be inducted into the Connecticut Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in April. Hard to believe that the DIII conference qualifiers are less than two weeks away! Where has the season gone. Best of luck to everyone in their conference qualifiers. We hope that everyone stays healthy over the next 11 days or so.
Mat tidbits: Congratulations to Bridgewater State senior Craig Buckley who just became the first BSC wrestler to win 100 career matches! Quite a feat for the Bears and Coach Kenney and Buckley achieved that milestone in just three seasons. BSC teammate Brian Bartlett recently earned his 89th career win to move into fourth place on the BSC all-time list. The Bears have been getting some solid wrestling from 133 Tim Lawlor and 165 John Fralic, both promising freshmen. Quite a tri-meet at Trinity on Saturday when Johnson & Wales staked a name for itself with victories over top ranked Springfield and Trinity. The Wildcats have been wrestling very well and it showed that day. Tonight there is a big tri-meet at Rhode Island College where JWU, RIC and the Coast Guard Academy will battle it out to determine the Pilgrim League Champion. All three teams are undefeated in the League going into tonight. RIC has continued their strong showing. 149 Allyn Quibble is back in the lineup and 133 Todd Bloom has improved a great deal and is ranked #5 this week. The conference had four teams ranked in the top 30 in the latest national coaches poll, something that has not happened much, if at all, over the past ten years. Springfield was 13th, Norwich 14th, WPI 20th and JWU 23rd. Ranked individuals included Williams Tom Prairie (5th at 125), Norwich Brian Zane (8th-133), Wesleyan's Adam Jonas (8th-157), CGA's Josh Boyle (6th-184), BSC's Buckley (8th-184), Springfield's Tom Medonis (8th-197), RIC's Justin Deveau (4th-285) and Trinity's Mike Blair (5th-285). There have not been too many times lately that we have had eight individuals ranked either, hopefully that can translate into All-Americans the first weekend of March. Quite a bit of injury scuttlebutt going on out there, not sure what to believe, but here are some definitive ones. Zane is out for the year and RWU's Kyle DeBias is done for the season. Springfield has 149 Pope, 165 O'Donnell, 174 Viglione and 285 Fay all rumored to be out as is Trinity 184 Matt Webster. Norwich 165 Jon Capen recently set the school record for pins with his 55th career stick! He has 25 of them this season. Too bad the NCAA doesn't keep track of wrestling stats, because he would surely be at or near the top nationally in that category. The individual rankings saw a bit of juggling this week with several lower ranked wrestlers defeating higher ranked guys. Williams and Wesleyan had quite a dual last week with the Cardinal eking out a 19-18 victory. The Ephs did get some revenge on WNEC last week, avenging a defeat in the New England Duals with a big win. Good luck to all competitors in the NECCWA Sub-Varsity Championships Sunday at Springfield.

2003-04 New England Intercollegiate Wrestling News
Editor's Notes: Happy New Year! I can't talk enough about the parity and toughness this year in New England Division III. Without question the conference right now is the toughest it has been in my ten years as a coach and I think there are many who would agree that the conference has never been tougher from top to bottom as it is right now. That is a great thing, hopefully we can translate that into All-Americans in March! DIII coaches please remember to get your team results in for the New England Duals and your ranking sheet. You should be receiving that information from Drew Black very soon. Also for DIII coaches, please fill out your official entry form and make sure it is postmarked by February 1st, otherwise the NCAA will impose a fine on your Institution. Best of luck to everyone!
Mat tidbits:Quite a bit of roster shuffling going on, with several changes having big impacts. Johnson & Wales 165 Tim Ruberg is now up at 174 which makes that weight even tougher than it already is. The Wildcats have put things together nicely and have a quality lineup. 184 Ryan Lenhardt is back after his knee injury and 125 Vinny Lauria is back as well. 133 Anthony Montes was second in the conference a year ago and returnees Chris Wells and Raphael Guitler are solid also. They also have a quality freshman in 157 Joe Boucher. Williams has been hit by some injuries, but the Ephs return some quality performers, led by 125 Tom Prairie who was third in the nation a year ago and has the potential to do better than that this year. 133 Dan Jacobs is a dangerous foe, 141 Tim Madden, 165 Gus Whyte and 285 Justin Sullivan are all top returnees. Newcomers Lars Ojukwu and 174 John Dolan, currently ranked sixth, have looked very impressive. The utmost of congratulations to Williams' Jeff Ishizuka, who was recently named a "Rhodes Scholar!" I believe he is the 36th in the history of Williams. Quite an accomplishment. Bridgewater State seems to be getting things together after a slow start. 184 Craig Buckley has been sick lately, when healthy he is one of the top grapplers in the weight without question. The Bears have gotten 149 Adam Weafer back which will help. WNEC has some top notch performers including freshman 125 Jason Vermes who had a strong first semester. 141 Anthony Corvino, 174 Brandon Hayes and 184 John Oko have all been wrestling well. Plymouth State has struggled out of the gate a bit, but have some extremely talented performers. 141 Shaun Cleary, defending 149 champ Dan Moskowitz, impressive freshman 157 Brandon Black, 174 Nate Kittredge (last years champ at 184) and 285 Rick Simula are all quality grapplers. Coast Guard has a veteran team that is led by 125 Tim Bernadt and 184 Josh Boyle, currently ranked seventh nationally. 149 John Lisko, 165 Scott Koser, 197 Ben O'Loughlin and 285 Gavin Garcia are all threats to earn All-New England honors. Roger Williams has been led by 125 Jon Egan and 184 Joe Fitzsimons. The Hawks have lost senior 149 Kyle DeBias for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. ###

2003-04 New England Intercollegiate Wrestling News
Editor's Notes: Welcome to another season of New England Intercollegiate wrestling! I am excited about what is happening with New England wrestling and I hope that many of you are as well. We are off and running and the parity at the Division III level seems to be the best it has been since I began doing this about ten years ago. The sharing of results at the DIII level has been great as well. Kudos to Coach Grebinar and his staff at WPI for putting that template and program together. Everyone has been following the guidelines and that is great to see. Plaudits to NECCWA President Drew Black who has been doing a great job of e-mailing information out to all of us on a consistent and timely basis. This newsletter will only be e-mailed, it will not be snail mailed anymore. Condolences to Mike Whalen and family on the recent passing of his mom. The conference has made a donation to the American Diabetes Association in the name of Mike's mom. Best of luck to all this season! Stay healthy!
Mat Tidbits: Harvard is off to a fine start with a recent 12th place finish in the Las Vegas Invitational.Jesse Jantzen finished third there in his last match at 157, he will go down to 149. He also took first in the East Stroudsburg Open. Max Meltzer has also been wrestling well at 141, finishing fifth at Vegas and first at the ESU Open. Meltzer is ranked 20th nationally. Division III has seen an interesting beginning to the season with Springfield reclaiming the top spot in the conference after Trinity was ranked first in the pre-season poll. The Pride have come on very strong in the early going, starting with an impressive showing at Ithaca. They have two top-ranked guys right now in 174 Brian Viglione who is wrestling exceptionally well and 197 Tom Medonis who is also off to a superb start. Newcomers Mike Gaeta (141), Ryan Pope (149) and Scott Fivre (157) have strengthened an already strong Pride lineup. Trinity has faltered a bit but you can't really judge them on what they have done so far because they have been without nationally second ranked 285 pounder Mike Blair who has yet to wrestle and returning conference placer Dave Bucco (157) who has also been out. The Bantams have a veteran lineup and the switch of Mike Doros to 197 and Matt Webster to 184 has helped. Newcomer Will Moyet is ranked at 133. Norwich has a star-studded lineup and the Cadets have been performing very well. They tied Springfield for the title in the Doug Parker and have seven wrestlers ranked in the conference. 133 Brian Zane is off to a great start, as are 125 Pat Howard, 141 Mike Conklin, 149 Dan Whelan, 157 Jake Rivers and 165 Jon Capen. Great to see some quality grappling coming from Southern Maine. 197 pounder Matt Waite is an impressive grappler who has looked very good so far. 133 Chris Rispoli is also off to a good start as new coach Joe Pistone, the former AIC All-American, has the Huskies heading on the right track. WPI is the only team in the conference with four conference champs in their lineup. 133 DeShawn Fentress, 157 Joe Moskowitz, 174 Pete Krzyzewski and 184 Dave Capone have all stood atop the NECCWA throne and the Engineers have several other quality grapplers that make this one of their best teams in several years. Rhode Island College has an impressive newcomer in 141 pounder Mike Bonora who knocked off Trinity all-american Mark Foresi in the Roger Williams tournament. The Anchormen also have stud Justin Deveau at 285 and returning conference placer Keith Nelson at 174. Wesleyan is also off to a very impressive start and were ranked 28th in the last national coaches poll, the first time in quite some time that they have been nationally ranked. 141 Gabe Fiero-Fine is off to an incredible start and is ranked seventh nationally. He has really been on fire and has looked very good in the early going. 157 Adam Jonas is also off to a good start and is ranked eighth nationally, but word is he has suffered an injury that will keep him out until at least January. That is too bad since he was out all of last year as well. Hopefully the senior stud will rehab and get back in action soon. 165 Dave Bartlett has also performed well for the Cardinals. ###
