RMAC- Fort Lewis College men's soccer coach named National Coach of the Year

January 14, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Fort Lewis College head men's soccer coach Oige Kennedy was named the 2011 NSCAA/MONDO National Coach of the Year for NCAA Division II, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced yesterday at its annual convention and awards banquet.

"Recognition by your peers is always special," said FLC Director of Athletics Gary Hunter. "The amount of success that Oige has had in such a short period of time as a head coach is just extraordinary."

In his three years at the helm of the Skyhawk men's soccer program, Kenney has guided his squad to a pair of NCAA Division II national titles in 2009 and 2011.

Through his first three seasons, Kennedy has posted a 59-7-4 (.847) overall record and is 37-3-2 (.929) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. His teams are a perfect 10-0-0 in the NCAA playoffs and 4-0-2 in the RMAC tournament (two ties ending in penalty kicks).

His 2009 and 2011 teams each went 24-1-0, setting the NCAA Division II standard for most wins in a season.

Earlier this season, Kennedy was named the NSCAA/MONDO Central Region Coach of the Year and the RMAC Coach of the Year. He was previously named the CaptainU Division II Coach of the Year in 2009.

He wasn't the lone Skyhawk to be honored last night. Senior defender Fabian Kling received the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Player of the Year honor at the awards banquet. Kling's honor was announced last month by the NSCAA.

In addition to Kennedy winning the Division II award, former Fort Lewis College men's soccer skipper Jeremy Gunn (1999-2007) was named the NSCAA/MONDO National Coach of the Year for NCAA Division I. Gunn led North Carolina-Charlotte to their first championship game appearance in school history, falling to North Carolina 1-0 in the title match. His team finished with a 16-5-4 record, boosting his career mark to 64-26-15 at the Division I level in five seasons at Charlotte and 187-61-31 in 13 seasons as a collegiate head coach. Gunn, who left Charlotte for Stanford last month, also won the 2005 NSCAA National Coach of the Year award at the Division II level after leading Fort Lewis to the 2005 national title.

Kennedy and Gunn are the only two Fort Lewis College coaches in any sport to win National Coach of the Year awards while coaching at FLC.

Have a great day!

T.J. Hepburn, Nebraska-Kearney Named RMAC December Athletes of the Month

January 4, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Jasmine Cervantes of Metropolitan State College of Denver, and Fabian Kling of Fort Lewis College, have been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Month for December 2011. The league's 14 sports information directors nominate student-athletes from their institution which are then selected by the RMAC office.

A 5-foot-8 senior guard for the women's basketball team, Cervantes had a month to remember for the Roadrunners, setting a couple of records and helping Metro State to a perfect 7-0 record in conference play and a No. 2-ranking nationally. She recorded the first triple-double in school history on Dec. 3 with 17 rebounds, 13 points and 11 assists to go with three blocked shots and three steals against Western New Mexico. Her performance against the Mustangs helped her win RMAC/Baden Defensive Player of the Week honors. She notched 10 points, six assists and five rebounds in a road win at Nebraska-Kearney on Dec. 9, and neared another triple double with 13 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds and three steals the following night at Chadron State. Cervantes entered the Christmas holiday break with a season-high 19 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals at Regis. She closed the month with two more strong performances against two of the top teams in the RMAC. Cervantes had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and a season-high five steals and two blocked shots against Colorado Mesa on Dec. 30. The following night, she had eight points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in a second-half rally to beat Western State. She moved into a tie for the career assists record at Metro State against WSC with 393. For the month, she averaged 11.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 2.4 steals and 0.9 blocked shots, while shooting 49.2 percent from the floor and 77.3 percent at the line.

Kling closed out his career with the Skyhawks on top, helping Fort Lewis to their third NCAA men's soccer national championship on Dec. 3. The 6-foot-3 senior defender scored the game-winning goal in FLC's 3-0 win over Millersville in the NCAA semifinals. He also aided the Skyhawks in their 3-2 overtime win against Lynn in the championship match.  Kling finished the season with 16 total points (seven goals, two assists) despite playing central defense and missing seven games due to partially torn ACL. He was named the NSCAA NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, and to the following teams: NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II All-America first team, NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Central Region first team, Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America first team, Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Central Region first team, the Defensive Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division II Final Four, and to the All-NCAA Division II Final Four Team. Kling led Fort Lewis to its third NCAA Division II championship in men's soccer - all three coming since 2005. He was the starting defender on FLC's 2009 and 2011 NCAA title teams.

Adams State College Wrestling: RMAC Wrestling Week 6 Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Go to http://ascgrizzlies.athleticsite.net/wr-201112RMACWeek6.pdf to view the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's (RMAC) sixth wrestling release of the 2011-12 season, released Tuesday by league officials. The release includes league standing, RMAC Wrestler of the Week, recent results, upcoming contests, news & notes from around the league and a look at the polls.

A small contingent of four Grizzlies were in action last weekend at the Colorado Mesa Open in Grand Junction, where redshirt-freshman Jacob Deaguero (Commerce City, Colo.) paced the group with a fourth place finish at 157 pounds.

Deaguero was one of two placers for the Grizzlies, as freshman Clint Myers (Salida, Colo.) finished sixth at 197 pounds for Adams State.

Adams State, ranked ninth in last week's National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) Division II Poll, will head to Nevada this weekend following the conclusion of finals for the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Last year, at the predominantly Division I tournament, the Grizzlies placed 18th with a team score of 26.5 points. Adams State returns five of their wins from the meet a year ago, including two from senior Josh Hensley (Alamosa, Colo.). Currently ranked third in DII at 149 pounds, Hensley went 2-2 in the same weight class at last year's Tournament of Champions, winning his first two matches by technical fall.

Sophomore 133-pounder Corey Johnson (Newcastle, Calif.), sophomore 157-pounder Mark Mabry, Jr. (Benson, Ariz.) and senior 197-pounder Luke McPeek (Albuquerque, N.M.) each won a match in Reno last season. McPeek was a No. 6 seed in the tournament last year, and is ranked third in DII at 197 pounds as of last week.

Also returning with experience at the Reno Tournament of Champions are sophomores Jerry Huff (Broomfield, Colo.) and Dominic Madril (Westminster, Colo.) at 125 pounds, and junior Taylor Stam (Parker, Colo.) in the heavyweight division.

Action in Reno will take place on Sunday, Dec. 18, beginning at 11 a.m. Mountain Time.

RMAC Wrestling Week 3 Release

Grizzlies travel to Nebraska for second tourney of season
11/15/2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Go to http://ascgrizzlies.athleticsite.net/wr-201112RMACWeek3.pdf to view the third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) wrestling release of the 2011-12 season. Included in Tuesday's release are league standings, RMAC Wrestler of the Week, recent results, upcoming matches/tournaments and news & notes from around the league.

The Grizzlies opened their season last week with the Annual Green & Black Dual on Wednesday night before travelling for their first tournament of the season at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo., on Saturday.

Two wrestlers captured titles in the Elite brackets on Saturday, including senior Luke McPeek (Albuquerque, N.M.) and unattached junior Ryan Fillingame (Victorville, Calif.), while junior heavyweight Taylor Stam (Parker, Colo.) finished fourth in the Elite bracket.

A 2-time all-American and third-ranked 197-pounder in Division II to start this season, McPeek took the championship bout with a pin 1:20 over Montana State-Northern's Evan Hinebauch. McPeek went 3-0 on the day after being granted a first-round bye.]

Fillingame compiled a 4-0 mark and earned three close decisions, including by scores of 8-6 and 8-7 in the championships semifinals and finals, after scoring a pin in the opening round. His four wins matched the most of the day for any Grizzly.

Stam's trip to the third-place bout included a 5-1 win over Chadron State's RJ Boylan, but came up on the short end of a 5-3 decision against Wyoming's Leland Pfeffer in his final bout of the day.

Sophomore Casey Lynn (Cortez, Colo.) and junior Max Ortega (Rio Rancho, N.M.) each posted four wins on Saturday as well. Lynn, wrestling unattached in the Amateur 149 bracket, recorded wins by decision, major decision, fall and technical fall. Ortega, wrestling in the Elite 149, took down fellow RMAC wrestlers in all four of his wins.

This weekend the Grizzlies will take to the mat for their second of six scheduled tournaments, returning to the site of the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships in Kearney, Neb., where seven RMAC squads in all are scheduled to compete.

http://www.rmacsports.org/2004halloffame.pdf

Friday, May 21, 2004

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO --- The Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference (RMAC) has announced that six individuals and three national
championship teams will be inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame this
summer.

The 2004 induction class includes three former
student-athletes, Debra Gilbert (basketball) of Adams State College,
Chuck Pipher (wrestling) of the University of Southern Colorado (now
Colorado State University at Pueblo) and Lonnie Porter (basketball and
track & field) of Adams State College. The RMAC is also enshrining Troy
Bledsoe (athletic director) of Fort Lewis College under the
administrator category, Fritz Brennecke (football coach and athletic
director) from Colorado School of Mines in the historical classification
and Doug Schakel (men's basketball coach) of Mesa State College for his
achievements in the coaching profession. Complete biographical
information, as well as photos of the inductees, will be released in
early July.

Along with the six individuals, three teams will be
recognized for capturing the league's first-ever national championships.
The Montana State College (now University) Bobcats tied (0-0) Saint
Joseph's College (IN) in the inaugural Aluminum Bowl on December 19th,
1956, thus sharing the first-ever National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) football title. The game was played at
War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, AR and was broadcasted nationally
on CBS television and CBS radio. The 1963 and 1964 Western State College
wrestling teams will also be celebrated at the banquet for their
achievements. Both Mountaineer squads earned the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) College Division national championship. Van
Doughtey won the 115-pound individual championship, while every other
member of the 1963 WSC team placed at least fourth at the national meet.
In 1964, WSC repeated as national champions with Al Rozman (191-pounds)
and Bob Hollingshead (137-pounds) garnering individual titles.

Last year's class included the following individuals: RMAC
official John Adams; former Mesa State College director of athletics Jay
Jefferson; past Adams State College cross country coach Joe Vigil; Lloyd
Madden from Colorado School of Mines as a historical category
representative (football player and track & field athlete); as well as
former student-athletes Hector Hernandez (wrestling) of New Mexico
Highlands University; Annette Wiles (basketball) from Fort Hays State
University and Elva Martinez Dryer (runner) of Western State College.
This year marks the third year of the RMAC Hall of Fame. Paul and Wanda
Brechler, former conference commissioners, were the initial inductees at
the 2002 RMAC Hall of Fame Banquet.

The individuals and teams will be commemorated on Friday,
July 10th at the luxurious Colorado Springs Sheraton Hotel. The event
will begin with a social hour at 5 pm (MST), followed by dinner at 6 pm
and the banquet at 7 pm. Banquet tickets are $40 per person and can be
