Pacific- Strong lightweight matchesgive Southern Oregon a scare
Men's Wrestling
No. 3 (NAIA) Southern Oregon 29, Pacific 18
FOREST GROVE - A series of excellent performances from Pacific's lightweights gave No. 3 (NAIA) ranked Southern Oregon a scare before the Raiders took control late in the match to beat the Boxers 29-18 in both team's final men's wrestling dual of the 2011-12 season at the Stoller Center.
Southern Oregon Head Coach Mike Ritchey elected to leave eight of his regular starters at home in Ashland, and Pacific came to the mat charged to mount a potential upset. The Boxers won the first three matches of the night, including a forfeit and a pin by Eric Harder (Fr., Bethesda, Md.). Caleb Malychewski (So., Camas, Wash.) earned his 20th win of the season with a come-from-behind victory at 174 pounds.
Experience, however, proved the difference late as the Raiders won five of the final six matches. Travis Patrick, Austin Vanderford and Bubba Owens all earned first round pins and the Raiders earned bonus points in five of their wins.
Where they have been a weak spot for the Boxers much of the season, the lightweights did their part to put Pacific in the driver's seat. Harder had early control over Jordan Lowe at 133 pounds and led 4-2 after two rounds. The two grapplers traded reversals early in the third round before Harder turned Lowe for his 12th victory and fifth pin of the season.
Baxter followed with a grinding victory at 141 pounds over Woong Kim. Neither wrestler scored in the first period and traded single points in the second. Choosing the down position in the third round, Baxter succeeded in a reversal midway through the period and held on for the 4-1 win.
Patrick started Southern Oregon's trek back with his pin at 149 pounds and Dalton Urrutia added four points with his 16-5 major decision over Michael Tyner (Fr., Aloha, Ore.). Urrutia nearly gave it up at the end, though, as Tyner pulled an escape with 15 seconds left and shocked Urrutia with a quick takedown and a two-point nearfall, coming so close to a sudden pin that would have changed the entire match.
Derek Mestrovich brought SOU to within 15-13 with his 13-10 decision over Bruce Balcita (So., Myrtle Creek, Ore.) at 165before Malychewski came back from a 4-1 first period deficit to score an escape and a takedown in the third period for a 7-6 decision over Tucker Van Matre.
Vanderford, one of the two Raiders' starters to make the trip, gave Southern Oregon the lead with a first round pin of Andrew Bolton (Fr., Anacortes, Wash.). Derek Rottenberg added a major decision at 197 pounds over Wes Heredia (Fr., Keizer, Ore.) and starter Owens capped the match with a first round pin of Will Ulrich (Fr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.).
Pacific finishes the dual season with 3-9 record. Southern Oregon finishes at 11-3.
Tonight's match was the last dual of the season for both teams. Pacific will now gear up for the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, which takes place on Sat., Feb. 25 at Si Melby Hall on the campus of Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Southern Oregon will host the NAIA Western Qualifier tournament on Sat., Feb. 18.

Pacific- Malychewski prevents shutout with win against Clackamas
Men's Wrestling
No. 3 (NJCAA) Clackamas CC 44, Pacific 5
OREGON CITY, Ore. - Caleb Malychewski (Jr., Camas, Wash.) wrestled up a weight to prevent a shutout Thursday against national junior college power Clackamas CC as the Cougars rolled to a 44-5 men's wrestling dual meet victory at Randall Hall.
Wrestling his first match of the season at 174 pounds, Malychewski scored his team-leading 19th victory of the season with a 17-0 technical fall over Josh Nelson. It was the fourth technical fall of the season and the fifth dual meet win of the year for Malychewski.
The win broke up what appeared to be a potential scoreless rout for Clackamas, who entered the match ranked No. 3 in the National Junior College Athletics Association rankings. The Cougars finished the night with four pins, three of which came in the first six matches, and scored bonus points in all but two of the evening's bouts.
After Sage Ornelas opened the night with a major decision victory over Ian Hockett (Fr., Sherwood, Ore.) at 125 pounds, the Cougars reeled off three straight six-point matches. Martin Gonzalez accepted a forfeit win at 133 pounds while Cody Randall and Clinton McAlester notched pins at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively. Michael Tyner (Fr., Aloha, Ore.) came close to ending the skid, taking a close 6-3 decision to Nikko Veltri at 157 pounds.
Eric Hensel earned Clackamas' third pin of the night at 165 pounds before Malychewski closed out the Cougars' 31-0 run with his technical fall at 174 pounds. Trent Noon scored the fourth pin of the night at 184 pounds before Austin Morehead scored a 17-5 major decision over Wes Heredia (Fr., Keizer, Ore.) at 197 pounds. Will Ulrich (Fr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) came close to the win in his first dual meet of the season, dropping a 5-3 decision to Jake Laden.
With the loss, Pacific dropped to 3-8 in dual meets while Clackamas improved to 12-2 on the season. Pacific wraps up the 2011-12 dual meet portion on the schedule on Friday night when they host No. 2 (NAIA) ranked Southern Oregon.

Pacific- Opening match momentum not enough to beat Lakers
Men's Wrestling (from Fri., Jan. 13)
No. 6 (NJCAA) Southwestern Oregon CC 23, Pacific 15
COOS BAY, Ore. - A win in the opening bout of the match was not enough for Pacific to build momentum against a talented Southwestern Oregon CC squad as the No. 6 (NJCAA) ranked Lakers beat the Boxers 23-15 in men's wrestling action at the Student Recreation Center.
With the match beginning at 133 pounds, Eric Harder (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) opened the match by winning his bout without a takedown. A caution penalty point and the bonus point for accruing over four minutes of riding time was all he needed for a 2-0 victory over Skylar Prislae.
From there, the Lakers went on to win the next three matches to take the lead for good. Joe Gardner used a pair of first round takedowns to score a 6-2 decision over Ryan Baxter (Fr., Craig, Alaska) at 141 pounds while both Nick Bendon and Craig Trask scored major decision victories at 149 and 157, respectively.
Bruce Balcita (So., Spokane, Wash.) put Pacific back on the scoreboard, scoring first and third round takedowns for a 6-2 victory over Kolbjorn Skaflestad. The Lakers then put the match out of reach by winning the next threematches, claiming a forfeit at 174 pounds and decision victories by Ryland Geiger and Bo Yourkes at 184 and 197.
Jared Bridgewater (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) claimed a forfeit win at heavyweight over John Hatch while Zach Binkerd (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) closed out the dual with a 7-1 win over Tim Spangle at 125 pounds.

Pacific- Baxter gets lone win as Boxers fall in tilt with ranked Raiders
Men's Wrestling
No. 2 (NAIA) Southern Oregon 41, Pacific 3
ASHLAND, Ore. - Ryan Baxter (Fr., Craig, Alaska) claimed the lone victory for Pacific in the first of two match-ups with perennial rival Southern Oregon Saturday as the No. 2 (NAIA) ranked Raiders cruised to a 41-3 win in men's wrestling action at Riehm Arena.
Baxter broke a string of two falls to open the match with a hard fought 3-1 victory over Brad Tamashiro at 141 pounds. The victory, though, was not enough to knock the high-powered Raiders off their stride as they finished the night with three pins and a technical fall. Southern Oregon improved to 6-2 in dual matches this season while the Boxers dropped to 3-7.
The Boxers found themselves in a 12-0 deficit to open the match after Mitchell Lofstedt pinned Zach Binkerd (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) in the 125-pound match and Miguel Baltazar pinned Eric Harder (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) in the 133-pound bout. After Baxter's victory, Travis Patrick returned the Raiders to the win column with an 8-1 decision over Devin Silva (So., Spokane, Wash.) and Dalton Urrutia made it a 21-3 lead with the Raiders' third pin of the gay, beating Michael Tyner (Fr., Aloha, Ore.) at 157.
Southern Oregon received three wins by decision in the final five matches from Brian Lemmon at 165 pounds, Derek Rottenberg at 197 pounds and Bubba Owens at heavyweight, who did just enough to out-distance Jared Bridgewater (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) 4-1. The Raiders claimed a forfeit at 174 pounds and Austin Vanderford added bonus points with a 17-2 technical fall over Caleb Malychewski (So., Camas, Wash.) at 184 pounds.
After wrestling 11 straight dual matches, the Boxers will return to the tournament setting. Pacific will compete at the Clackamas Community College Open next Saturday in Oregon City.

Pacific- Late pins allow Boxers road dual victory over Yaks
Men's Wrestling
Pacific 27, Yakima Valley CC 18
Pacific 58, Central Washington Club 0 (exhibition)
YAKIMA, Wash. - A pair of late pins by Caleb Malychewski (So., Camas, Wash.) and Wes Heredia (Fr., Keizer, Ore.) brought Pacific back from behind Friday as the Boxers completed a season sweep of Yakima Valley CC with a 27-18 victory over the Yaks in men's wrestling action at Yakima Valley CC.
The Boxers dropped five of the first seven matches of the night, including a pair of bouts decided by two points over less. The Yaks led 18-9 when Malychewski scored his first round at 184 pounds over Chris Burnett, which suddenly brought the Boxers within two points. Heredia then gave Pacific the win with his third pin of the season, going 4 minutes, 12 seconds to knock off Daniel Agao at 197 pounds. Jared Bridgewater (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) padded the victory when he accepted a forfeit at heavyweight.
The victory improves Pacific's dual meet record to 3-4 on the season. The Boxers also won a 58-0 exhibition dual over a club team from Central Washington Univ., bolstered by six forfeit wins.
Much as was the case in the team's first meeting in December, Pacific's chances to win would depend on the heavier weight classes. The Yaks jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first matches when Jesse O'Camb scored a major decision over Zach Binkerd (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) at 125 pounds and Konner Hopkins won a third round pin over Eric Harder Fr., Bethesda, Md.) at 133.
Ryan Baxter (Fr., Craig, Alaska) gave Pacific their first points, cutting the deficit to four with his first round pin of Chris Pena at 141. It was Baxter's third pin of the season. Devin Silva (So., Spokane, Wash.) brought Pacific within one point with a 9-4 decision victory over Jimmy Wilson at 149 pounds.
Yakima Valley won the next three matches, all decisions, putting Pacific in a position to need bonus points in the final three bouts to secure the win. Malychewski started the comeback in grand style, controlling the bout from start to finish before finally pinning Burnett with seven seconds left in the first period. It was Malychewski's second pin of the season for his team-leading 12th victory.
Heredia picked up the crucial final bonus points to secure the win in a great second period where he pinned Agao. The victory improved the freshman's record to 5-9 on the season.
Baxter and Heredia also picked up wins by fall in the match against Central Washington. Silva took an 8-0 major decision over Izzy Fernanda and Will Ulrich (Fr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) scored a first round fall over Kevin Madson at heavyweight.
Pacific wraps up their weekend Washington community college tour on Saturday with a dual against Highline CC.

Pacific- Boxers fall just short of upset of ranked Highline squad
Men's Wrestling
No. 8 (NJCAA) Highline CC 24, Pacific 21
DES MOINES, Wash. - Pacific fell just short of evening their dual meet record against one of the top junior college teams in the nation Saturday as the Boxers fell 24-21 to Highline CC in men's wrestling action at the Thunderdome.
As has been much their mode of operation this season, the Boxers relied on their heavier weights to keep things close. The Boxers won four of the last six matches of the dual, which included a pair of forfeits. Pacific competed without a full lineup for the first time this season after Devin Silva (So., Spokane, Wash.) failed to make weight at 149 pounds. With the loss, Pacific saw their dual record drop to 3-5.
Highline jumped out to the 17-0 lead early thanks in part to major decision victories by Steven Romero at 125 pounds and Drew Dacey at 133 pounds. Pacific got on the board thanks to Highline's forfeit at 157 pounds before Bruce Balcita (So., Myrtle Creek, Ore.) scored the first on mat victory for the Boxers with his12-8 decision over Craig Dyess at 165 pounds.
The Thunderbirds took a 21-9 lead at 174 pounds with Lucas Huyber taking a 10-3 decision from Chris Harlin (So., Issaquah, Wash.) and Thomas Rhinehard added three more points with his 7-3 decision over Caleb Malychewski (So., Camas, Wash.) at 184.
A forfeit at 197 brought the Boxers within 24-15 before Jared Bridgewater (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) closed the afternoon with a first round pin at heavyweight over Michael Henry. The victory was the second of the weekend for Bridgewater and ran his record to 12-8 on the season.
Pacific returns to dual meet action next weekend, closing out a string of nine straight matches on the road. The Boxers compete at No. 6 (NJCAA) ranked Southwestern Oregon CC on Friday before making their annual trip to Ashland for a Saturday match with No. 3 (NAIA) ranked Southern Oregon.

Pacific University- Silva wins pair, four advance to quarters at Spokane Open
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - Wrestling in front of a hometown crowd, Devin Silva (So., Spokane, Wash.) won a pair of matches and four of his Pacific teammates advanced to the quarterfinals to lead the Boxers at the Spokane Open, held at the HUB Regional Sports Center.
Wrestling in the 149-pound bracket, Silva, a graduate of Spokane's West Valley High School, rebounded from losing his opening match to win his next two on the consolation side of the ladder. He scored a second round pin over Chance Watt of the Central Washington University club and followed that up with a 3-1 decision over Great Falls' Colt Ewing. Silva's march was stopped just before the consolation quarterfinals as he took a third round pin to Southern Oregon's Kyle Wirkuty.
Ryan Baxter (Fr., Craig, Alaska), Jared Bridgewater (So., Hillsboro, Ore.), Eric Harder (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) and Michael Tyner (Fr., Aloha, Ore.) all managed to advance to the tournament's quarterfinals thanks to opening round victories. Baxter win his opener in the 141-pound bracket with a 9-3 decision over Great Falls' Riley Berry before dropping an 18-3 technical fall to Oregon State's Drew Van Anrooy.
Bridgewater opened his day with a first round over Sean Gurnard of the Eastern Washington club in the heavyweight bracket before fall 5-2 in the quarters to Great Falls' Sears Tiernan. Harder cruised to a second round pin over North Idaho's Gabe Kruse in the opening match at 133 pounds before taking a hard-fought 12-10 overtime loss to Frank Mensa of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club.
Tyner, wrestling at 157 pounds, won his opener over Yakima Valley CC's Nolan Spires by an 11-2 before being bounced in the quarterfinals by Southern Oregon's Jimmy Eggemeyer in a second round pin.

Pacific University Men's Wrestling 2011-12 Season Preview
FOREST GROVE - If last year was a foundation building year for the Pacific men's wrestling program, then the 2011-12 season is the year where the Boxers start securing the studs to the foundation and begin framing in the components for success.
Strong recruiting classes over the last two years have provided not only some new blood, but also some much needed depth. A total of 21 athletes fill out the Pacific roster, the most in recent seasons. Pacific has significant depth at nine of the 10 weight classes, and that in itself will make the Boxers amore competitive team. Injuries to a limited lineup forced Head Coach Severin Walsh to forfeit in as many as four classes throughout most of the dual meet season.
But it is not all about the depth. To compete takes commitment, and Walsh is happy to have so many athletes committing to the sport on and off the mat. "The kids that we're working with are working harder than any group I have had here at Pacific," Walsh said. "The level of expectations has been raised and they understand what it takes to be a committed athlete."
And then there is the quality aspect of the equation. The core of 11 returners is complemented by 10 newcomers, most of whom arrived in Forest Grove with all-state credentials. In addition, the Boxers have potential starters in Caleb Malychewski (So., Camas, Wash.) and Jared Bridgewater (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) who are committing to the sport full-time after arriving at Pacific as two-sport athletes.
Walsh is optimistic that this group will put a more competitive brand of wrestling on the mat that will keep fans interested and keep opponents guessing. "We have some kids who were passed over at other schools that have made themselves into competitive college wrestlers," Walsh said. "We will definitely have some competitive matches."
In the end, that which will make the Boxers more competitive in this building process is that depth. "It is nice knowing that we likely won't have to forfeit weights like we did last year," Walsh said. "A big part of that has been getting the right kids in here who are in it for the long haul."
125 POUNDS
After experiencing a lack of depth the last couple of years, Pacific will benefitfrom a trio of talented performers at 125 pounds. Zach Binkerd (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) returns after missing the 2010-11 season due to injuries. The early leader to earn the Boxers' starting spot at the weight class, Binkerd finished his freshman season with a 5-15 record.
Ricky Ridela (Fr., Waipahu, Hawaii) and Ian Hockett (Fr., Sherwood, Ore.) both come to Pacific with all-state credentials. Ridela finished fourth place in the last two Hawaii state championships, taking fourth in the 130-pound class as a senior. Hockett amassed a 30-6 record as a senior and was the Oregon 5A runner-up at 112 pounds. He finished sixth as a sophomore and junior at 103 pounds.
133 POUNDS
The 133-pound class will be anchored by one of the newcomers to watch for the Boxers. Eric Harder (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) finished third at the Maryland state championships at 130 pounds, finishing the season with a 35-4 record. He won 30 matches the year before en route to an eighth place meet finish.
Harder's choice to come west and wrestle at Pacific will pay dividends down the road. "He's a great kid with a tremendous work ethic," Walsh said. "He came in with a lot of college-ready attributes and he ready for the challenge of starting as a freshman."
141 POUNDS
One of three weight classes in which Pacific had to forfeit many of their matches last year, Walsh will look to Ryan Baxter (Fr., Craig, Alaska) to fill the role. A four-time regional and state placer, Baxter was the 135-pound Alaska state champion in 2011 and amassed the most wins in Craig High School history. Baxter will make a late start to the season after competing for the Boxers in cross country.
When he gets on the mat, Walsh expects some excitement from Baxter. "He's another kid who is college ready," Walsh said. "He has a tremendous future here. He has a great body type and there is a reason why he was a four-time state placer."
149 POUNDS
Returner Devin Silva (So., Spokane, Wash.) anchors the 149-pound class for the second straight year. Silva went 7-21 at 149 as a freshman and finished with a 2-9 in dual meets as well as a fourth place finish at the Boxer Open. With a year of experience and a good off-season of training, Walsh expects to see a ton ofimprovement.
"Devin got a lot stronger in the off-season," Walsh said. "He put his time in around the weight room and it shows. He should definitely be a force at 149."
157 POUNDS
Pacific's lineup at 157 could fluctuate a bit based on where the team's needs are at the time. Michael Tyner (Fr., Aloha, Ore.) is expected to be the regular starter at the class, but see action at 149 pounds should the team start experiencing injuries. Tyner was the No. 2 seed in the Oregon 6A state championships as a senior at 152 pounds after finishing seventh in the weight class as a junior.
"Michael is another talented newcomer that will help us," Walsh said. "Michael is the kind of kid that on any given day can beat anyone. He will be exciting to watch."
165 POUNDS
With the graduation of four-year starter Nathan Shay, the Boxers have a pair of returners who stand ready to step in at 165. Whichever wrestler does not start 165 could see himself moved to the174-pound class, where the Boxers do not have a regular performer.
Bruce Balcita (So., Myrtle Creek, Ore.) was one of two freshmen last year to finish with 10 or more wins, amassing a 10-14 record at 165 pounds. Most of his action came in the tournament setting, but compiled a 2-2 record in dual meets. Balcita finished just short of placing in his first NCAA Great Lakes Regional, going 2-2 in the season-ending tournament.
Walsh said he is excited by a new commitment by Balcita to gear all areas of his life towards success on the mat. "Physically he is committed to a very healthy lifestyle. One the wrestling side of things, he's looking for every opportunity to get better and it shows," Walsh said. "We're excited that he is back."
Chris Harlin (So., Issaquah, Wash.) will be a candidate for on-mat action after spending his freshman season at 174 pounds. While amassing a 4-15 record as a freshman, Harlin is transitioning to the lower weights after wrestling at 215 pounds in high school. "He has made some significant lifestyle choices to get himself in the best shape of his life," Walsh said. "He's developing well, especially with his work on the mat. He's very tough on top and he likes to scramble."
Andrew Bolton (Fr., Anacortes, Wash.) and Brandon Harms (Fr., Canby, Ore.) add more depth to the weight class. Bolton finished eighth in last year's Washington state championships at 171 pounds. Harms is working his way into wrestling shape after playing football for the Boxers. He was a three-time Three Rivers League champion for Canby High School.
184 POUNDS
Pacific pins its hopes at 184 pounds on a much-improved Malychewski. He finished with a 9-16 record in his freshman season and had the Boxers' best dual meet record at 6-4, which included winning three of four matches at the Wartburg Desert Duals.
Like many of last year's newcomers, Malychewski has spent much of the off-season looking to prepare to be more wrestling ready, including giving up a chance to play baseball to focus on the mat. "He's done a lot of good things in the offseason," Walsh said. "He's stronger and just plain better. With his commitment to wrestling full-time, we anticipate that he will only continue to improve."
197 POUNDS
The depth chart at 197 pounds is topped by a pair of returners. Ron Neu (Jr., Tillamook, Ore.) was the Boxers' regular starter at the weight class last year, finishing with a 6-17 overall record and a 5-13 mark at the weight. Nik Streng (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) saw limited action at 285 pounds, amassing a 2-7 record. Streng wrested his freshman season at both 184 and 197 pounds.
"Both of those guts have worked very hard," Walsh said. "Nik and Ron have both made some tremendous strides in terms of their strength training."
Both returners will be pushed by a talented newcomer in Wes Heredia (Fr., Keizer, Ore.). A three-time Central Valley Conference champion, Heredia was the 215-pound champion at last year's Oregon 6A championships.
285 POUNDS
With a renewed commitment to wrestling, one wonders how far Bridgewater can go for the Boxers. He wrestled to Pacific's second best record as a freshman at 12-12, which included seven pins. He placed fifth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and was the team's lone individual placer. The 2010 Oregon 5A state champion, Bridgewater decided this year not to continue his football career and to focus on the mat.
"It's exciting to have a big kid who can move around like Jared can," said Walsh of Bridgewater's athletic ability. "He' s a true heavyweight that can move. He's got quick feet and good athleticism."
Evan Schueurs (So., Duvall, Wash.) and Chris McLinden (So., Redwood City, Calif.) both return to the team and provided added depth at the bottom of the lineup. Schueurs saw limited action as a freshman in tournaments. McLinden returns to the program after a year off. He was the Boxers' regular starter at heavyweight during the 2009-10 season.
Will Ulrich (Fr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) expects to compete for action after he transitions from football season. He was a top competitor in the tough California high school championships, placing second at the CIF Championships last year at heavyweight.
Shay, Hyland Lead Pacific Boxers to 11th Place Great Lakes Finish
Men's Wrestling
NCAA Great Lakes Regional
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - It was the old and the new leading the way for Pacific as Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) and Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) each won two matches to pace the Boxers to an 11th place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, held Saturday at Augsburg College's Si Melby Hall.
Shay, competing in his final collegiate meet, was one of three Pacific wrestlers to advance to the quarterfinal round. Wrestling in the 165-pound bracket, Shay opened with a 9-1 major decision over No. 8 seed Daniel Stafford of Knox before dropping the quarterfinals match in a 15-0 technical fall to No. 1 seed Matt Baarson of St. John's (Minn.). Shay recovered to advance to the consolation quarterfinals, scoring a 6-4 decision over Augustana's Tyler Dempsey.
Hyland, meanwhile, capped a solid freshman season by going 2-2 in the 157-pound bracket. He opened the day with a 10-1 major decision over No. 7 seed Zachary Holland of Augustana before losing in the quarterfinals by pin to No. 2 seed Justin Skillings of St. Olaf. Hyland earned a pin of his own in his first consolation match, needed 71 seconds to dispatch Kevin Bolday of Maranatha Baptist.
Shay and Hyland helped Pacific climb in the team standings after a 15th place last year, finishing in a tie for 11th place with Wheaton (Ill.) with 17 points. Augsburg was once again the run away winner for the team title, winning seven of 10 individual championships with 224 points.
Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) capped a turnaround second half of the season by advancing to the quarterfinals of the 141-pound bracket, winning his first round match with a 1:38 pin of Wheaton's Casey Krahn. Ron Neu (Fr., Tillamook, Ore.), meanwhile, found a good time to win his second match of the season, earning second round pin of Knox's Daniel Page in his first consolation match.
Pacific entered eight wrestlers into the tournament. Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) was scratched from the 149-pound bracket, while the Boxers did not travel anyone to compete at heavyweight.

Simon Fraser 28, Pacific 18
ASHLAND, Ore. - Pacific opened their dual with Simon Fraser with solid victories in the first three matches, but Simon Fraser roared back to take six of the last seven matches to beat the Boxers 28-18 in the Boxers' final dual match of the season in men's wrestling action at McNeal Pavilion.
The Boxers opened the match with three hard earned victories that gave Pacific a 12-0 lead out of the gate. Zach Binkerd (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) started things with an exciting overtime match at 125 pounds. Binkerd scored the first takedown in the extra period to take the 6-4 decision over Thomas Ostapawich. Andrew Wolfe (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) followed up with his team-leading 14th victory and fifth pin of the season, going into the second period to down J.J. Lum at 133 pounds.
Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) then added to his impressive second half of the season, allowing Raj Virdi just one takedown in a 10-3 decision at 141 pounds. The victory was Honl's 12th of the season and his 11th since Jan. 1.
From that point, however, the match belonged to the Clan, who entered the match ranked 10th in the NAIA national poll. Mike Cappus opened the run with the first of three pins for the Clan, going into the third round to shut down Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) at 149 pounds, while decisions from Daniel Swain at 157 pounds and Max Arcand at 165 pounds tied the match at 12-12.
Arminder Virk gave the Clan the lead for good with his 20-8 major decision over Jordan Branson (Jr., Sheridan, Ore.) at 174 pounds. Clete Hanson and Manjot Sandhu assured the victory with a pair of pins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively, both in under 40 seconds.
With the loss, Pacific finishes their dual meet season at 0-14 overall. The Boxers will wrap up the season on Sat., Feb. 20, when they take part in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Tournament in Minneapolis.

Highline CC 40, Pacific 0
DES MOINES, Wash. - Pacific dropped four close decisions and gave up four major decisions Saturday as Highline CC shocked the Boxers with a 40-0 shutout in men's wrestling action at Hubbard Court.
The Thunderbirds opened up the match by scoring a pair of major decisions with Justin Purves winning at 125 pounds and Aaron Smith winning at 133 pounds. Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) gave up the first close match of the evening, coming up just short in a 10-7 loss to Sam Ottow at 141 pounds. Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) was even closer against Jason Gray at 149 pounds, but still came up short as he dropped an 11-9 decision.
Marshall Giovannini, ranked No. 1 in the junior college ranks at 157 pounds, added the third major decision of the night with a 17-9 dispatching of Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.). With the loss, Pacific dropped to 0-13 in duals while Highline improved to 8-3 on the season. Pacific returns to action on Saturday, hosting the Boxer Open tournament at the Pacific Athletic Center.

Yakima Valley CC 22, Pacific 19
FOREST GROVE - Pacific contested their closest and most competitive dual meet of the season Friday, but two pins in the final three matches for Yakima Valley CC allowed the Yaks to escape with the 22-19 victory in men's wrestling action at the Pacific Athletic Center.
Pacific managed to win five matches on the evening, highlighted by the first win of the season for 197-pounder Ron Neu (Fr., Tillamook, Ore.), but falls from Kris Medina at 184 pounds and Kyle Stults secured the win in favor of the Yaks.
Pacific built a 9-3 lead after the first three matches. Zach Binkerd (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) opened by accepting a forfeit at 125 pounds. Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) proved dominant over Anthony Owens over the first six minutes of the bout at 141 pounds. Honl built an 8-3 lead after two rounds and appeared to have bonus points secured by building the 14-5 lead. Owens, however, finished with a floury, scoring a takedown and nearfall in the final 20 seconds to erase the bonus points. Honl won 15-10, earning his sixth win in his last eight matches.
Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) extended the Pacific lead to 13-3 in easy fashion at 149 pounds, scoring a 10-2 major decision over Jack Calvert for his ninth win of the season. Brad Sweet responded in kind for the Yaks, scoring a 12-1 major decision at 157 pounds. Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) came from behind to win at 165 pounds. With the match tied 1-1 after one round, Shay proceeded to score five points in the second round, two on takedowns, to build the cushion needed to secure the 12-9 victory and a 16-7 Pacific lead.
Yakima Valley tied things up with wins in the next two matches as Adam Thies squeaked out a 5-4 decision over Jordan Branson (Jr., Sheridan, Ore.) at 174 pounds and Medina earned a second round pin at 184 pounds over Nik Streng (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii).
Neu followed looking for the first win of his collegiate career. After losing the first takedown to Tyler Bullington, Neu was able to score five of the next six points, two on solid takedowns. Neu allowed Bullington just one point in the final two rounds, earning a hard-fought 7-4 victory. Stults, however, closed it out for the Yaks with his 25 second pin over Chris McLinden (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) at heavyweight.
With the loss, Pacific drops to 0-12 in dual meets this season. The dual was the first and the last of the season at home for the Boxers. They return to action on Saturday, participating in the Clackamas Open in Oregon City.

Southwestern Oregon CC 31, Pacific 16
COOS BAY, Ore. - Pacific received wins from three of their 10 wrestlers Saturday, but the victories could not offset three pins by Southwestern Oregon CC as the Lakers posted a 31-16 victory over the Boxers in men's wrestling action at Southwestern Oregon CC's Student Recreation Center.
The Boxers jumped out to a 10-4 lead after the first three matches. Andrew Wolfe (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) gave Pacific the 6-4 advantage when he accepted a forfeit at 133 pounds. Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) added more bonus points with a 14-5 major decision over Matt Pride at 141 pounds. The win was Honl's fifth of the season and his fourth in his last six matches.
Southwestern Oregon swung things back in the Lakers' direction with an 8-5 decision by Trent Stevenson at 149 pounds and the first of three pins by the Lakers of the match by Jesse Chun at 157 pounds. Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) put Pacific back ahead 16-13 when he accepted a forfeit at 165 pounds.
Two falls and two decisions by the Lakers, however, sealed the match in favor of the home team. Jake Rice and Tim Hester insured the victory with their falls at 174 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively.
The two teams generated some additional action with a series of exhibition matches after the dual. Honl finished the day with two victories as he scored a pin in his exhibition match over Bowers. Wolfe, Shay, John Cushman (So., Lakewood, Wash.), Andy Duncan (So., Everett, Wash.) and Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) also earned exhibition victories.
With the loss, Pacific drops to 0-11 on the season. Pacific will return to dual meet action on Friday, hosting their only dual match of the season against Yakima Valley CC at 6 p.m. The Boxers will compete on Saturday at the Clackamas Open in Oregon City.

Hyland's Two Wins Leads Pacific Men Boxers at Menlo InvitationalMen's Wrestling
ATHERTON, Calif. - Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) finished with two victories Sunday, leading Pacific to an 11th place finish at the Menlo College Invitational, held at the Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Hyland earned both of his victories in the consolation bracket at 157 pounds. After losing his first round match in a 20-10 major decision to Menlo's Josh Emmett, Hyland had to wrestle his way through an extended preliminary round that accommodated the field of 20 wrestlers.
He succeeded in advancing to the consolation bracket with a second round pin of San Jose State's Koji Jagust and followed that up with a 10-8 decision over Simon Fraser's Max Arcand in the consolation first round. He bowed out in the consolation second round, dropping a 10-8 decision to San Francisco State's Ian Wrenn.
Hyland led Pacific to an 11th place finish out of 15 teams with 12.5 points. Southern Oregon was the runaway winner, scoring 116 points and topping second place San Francisco State by 51 points.
Four other Pacific wrestlers won one match apiece. John Cushman (So., Lakewood, Wash.) won his first round match at 125 pounds, scoring a second round pin over Menlo's Drake Medieros. Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) needed just 15 seconds to pin Central Florida's Harrison Billig in the 141-pound consolation bracket and Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) scored a 15-0 technical fall over San Jose State's Michael Bricker in the 149-pound consolation bracket.
Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) was also a winner in the consolation first round, taking a second round pin from Simon Fraser's Aaron Morton at 165 pounds.
Pacific returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Coos Bay for a dual against Southwestern Oregon CC. The match begins at 5 p.m.

Men's Wrestling
Embry Riddle 41, Pacific 6
Central Florida 32, Pacific 13
ATHERTON, Calif. - Pacific's men's wrestling team returned to the mats after a long holiday break and fell to a pair of ranked opponents Saturday as the Boxers competed in the Menlo Duals at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Pacific opened the day by taking a 41-6 loss to Embry Riddle, ranked No. 15 in the latest NAIA national poll. The Boxers put together a closer match against Central Florida, who entered ranked No. 2 in National Wrestling Coaches Association (NCWA) poll, but dropped the final four matches to take a 32-13 defeat. Pacific is now 0-10 on the season in dual bouts. The Central Florida match counts as an exhibition because the Knights compete as a club program.
Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) was the only Pacific wrestler to win in both duals, accepting a forfeit at 141 pounds against Embry Riddle and scoring an 8-0 major decision over Central Florida's D.J. Frazier. The wins moved Honl to 3-12 on the season.
Embry Riddle gave Pacific little chance to get going in the match, going up 10-0 early win a major decision at 125 pounds by John Garza and a 43 second pin at 133 pounds by Josh Chang. After Honl accepted the forfeit, the Eagles kept the pressure on by scoring bonus points in all but three of the remaining matches. The ledger included pins by Matt Hamilton at 184 pounds and Jonny Perez at heavyweight.
Jordan Branson (Jr., Sheridan, Ore.) provided the Boxers' closest bout of the dual, falling in a narrow 6-5 decision to Isai Gomez at 174 pounds.
After dropping their first two matches in the second dual of the day, the Boxers won three of the next four matches to keep the bout with Central Florida close. Honl opened Pacific's scoring with his major decision over Frazier. Two matches later, Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) came through with a 4-2 decision over Nick Christian at 157 pounds and Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) gave Pacific the 13-11 lead after Devon Jackson was forced to default due to injury.
Pacific gave the default points right back, forfeiting the 174-pound class. The Knights finished things up by winning the final three bouts, which included pins by Graham Smith at 184 pounds and Jake Powell at heavyweight.
Pacific returns to action in the Bay Area on Sunday, taking part in the Menlo Open at Haynes-Prim Pavilion. Matches begin at 9 a.m.

Pacific Men Boxers Drop Four Division III Bouts at Wartburg Desert Duals
Men's Wrestling
Wartburg Desert Duals
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Facing their first NCAA Division III competition of the season and three teams ranked in the top-15 of the national poll, Pacific's young lineup struggled in dropping all four of their duals at the Wartburg Desert Duals at the Flamingo Hotel.
Pacific opened the day by taking a 29-10 loss to Simpson (Iowa), the only unranked team that the Boxers faced. No. 14 Elmhurst handed the Boxers a 44-0 shutout, No. 9 North Central fell the Boxers 35-6 and No. 3 ranked Coe was a 37-12 winner. Pacific was scheduled to face NAIA foe Embry-Riddle in the fourth match, but was replaced by Coe in order to allow the Boxers more Division III competition.
With the losses, the Boxers dropped to 0-9 on the season in dual meets. The Boxers will return to competition on Sat., Jan. 2, when they travel to Atherton, Calif., for the Menlo Duals. Pacific's opponents in the dual meet have yet to be announced.
SIMPSON 29, PACIFIC 10: The Storm took the first three matches of the morning session, with Jeff Sand securing bonus points with his 11-2 major decision at 133 pounds over John Cushman (So., Lakewood, Wash.). Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) scored Pacific's first points and the first of his two victories on the day at 149 pounds, completing a 10-2 major decision of Kasey Green.
Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) kept things close as his 8-7 decision over Ethan Hess at 165 pounds brought Pacific to within 13-7 and Jordan Branson (Jr., Sheridan, Ore.) brought the Boxers to within three with a 2-1 decision over Jordy Hammons at 174 pounds. Simpson closed it out by scoring bonus points in the final three bouts, including pins by Curtis Barber at 184 pounds and Sam Collora at heavyweight.
ELMHURST 44, PACIFIC 0: The No. 14 ranked Bluejays did not allow a close match all morning, posting a shutout of the Boxers in the second session of the dual tournament. Elmhurst won their first five matches in decision and received bonus points with major decisions by Larry Baca at 141 pounds and Charlie Curran at 149 pounds.
Four of the Bluejays' final five victories came by way of fall with victories by Jacke Lewis at 165 pounds, Mike McNeil at 184 pounds, Joe Rau at 197 pounds and Brian Brooks at heavyweight. Branson provided for the Boxers' closest match of the dual at 174 pounds, dropping a 6-0 decision to Frank Savegnago.
#9 NORTH CENTRAL 35, PACIFIC 6: The Cardinals were winners in the first three matches of the dual, bolstered by a 16-1 technical fall by J.T. Rowe at 133 pounds. Kramer came back to win his second match of the day, posting a 10-6 over Trent Reinoehl at 149 pounds. Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) followed with his lone victory of the day, a 5-2 decision over Tim Gingerich at 157 pounds.
North Central closed the door by winning the final five matches. The Cardinals scored at least five points in each of the final three matches thanks to a Pacific forfeit at 184 pounds, a technical fall at 197 pounds by Vinnie Sapienza and a pin at heavyweight by Rodney Knowlton.
#3 COE 37, PCIFIC 12: Pacific opened the match by being gifted six points, accepting a forfeit at 125 pounds. Coe went on to win the next four matches, including a pair of technical falls by Jared Harding at 133 pounds and James Locke at 149 pounds, to go up 13-6.
Shay brought Pacific back to within four points with the Boxers' only pin of the day, going into the second round to dispatch Kyle Woods at 165 pounds. Coe went on to win the final four matches of the dual, which included pins by Scott King at 174 pounds, Epsen Fredriksen at 184 pounds and Jared Carder at heavyweight.

Pacific's Hyland Wins In Front Of Hometown Fans In Loss To Raiders
Men's Wrestling
Southern Oregon 40, Pacific 3
ASHLAND, Ore. - Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) picked up Pacific's only victory of the evening in front of his hometown crowd Thursday as No. 5 (NAIA) ranked Southern Oregon made quick work of the Boxers, winning 40-3 in a men's wrestling dual at McNeal Pavilion.
Hyland, a product of South Medford High School in nearby Medford, proved dominant over Tomas Rosa in his match at 157 pounds, scoring a 7-0 shutout decision in his third victory of the year.
The rest of the evening, though, belonged to the Raiders, who improved to 4-2 on the season in the win. Three Southern Oregon wrestlers earned victories by pin, including defending NAIA national champion Chris Platt, who needed all of 23 seconds to pin Nik Streng (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii). In all, six Raiders scored bonus points in their matches.
Outside of Hyland's victory, Andrew Wolfe (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) and Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) posted the closest matches of the night for the Boxers, who fell to 0-5 in duals on the season. Wolfe dropped an 8-2 decision to Brian Jacob at 133 pounds, while Honl was edged out in a 5-4 decision by Justin Eldred at 141 pounds.
Pacific returns to action on Sunday, taking part in the Wartburg Desert Duals at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. The Boxers will wrestle three Division III opponents in Simpson (Iowa), Elmhurst and North Central, and will also face another ranked NAIA squad in Embry-Riddle.

Clackamas CC 25, Pacific 21
Highline CC 37, Pacific 6
OREGON CITY, Ore. - A young Pacific squad made progress, but could not overcome a pair of experienced community college squads as the Boxers fell to Clackamas CC, 25-21, and to Highline CC, 37-6, Saturday in a pair of men's wrestling duals at Randall Hall.
Against Clackamas, Pacific started with momentum on their side. John Cushman (So., Lakewood, Wash.) opened the match with a second round pin of Levi Root at 125 pounds, while a forfeit at 133 pound gave the Boxers a 12-0 lead after two bouts.
Anthony Weerheim collected the Cougars' first points of the night at 141 pounds, scoring a 14-3 major decision over Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.). Billy Goldsberry and Joe Fistolera followed with a pair of close decisions at 149 and 157 pounds before Derek Mestrovich's 13-6 decision over Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) at 165 pounds gave Clackamas the lead at 13-12.
Jordan Branson (Jr., Sheridan, Ore.) put Pacific back on top with his 10-6 decision over Nick Dumolt at 174 pounds, but the Cougars assured themselves the win with a pair of first round pins by Brandon Jackson at 184 pounds and Ryland Geiger at 197 pounds.
Pacific had a much tougher time against Highline as the Boxers' only team points came by way of a forfeit at 133 pounds. The Thunderbirds collected bonus points at 125 and 149 pounds before closing the match with pins by Daren Faber at 197 pounds and Viktor Ognoskie at heavyweight. Branson came away with the closest bout of the night, falling in a 6-4 decision to Casey Park at 174 pounds.
With the losses, Pacific falls to 0-4 in dual meets this season. After a break to complete final exams, the Boxers will return to action on Thurs., Dec. 17, as they renew their cross-state rivalry with NAIA powerhouse Southern Oregon.

Pacific, Southern Oregon Men's Wrestling Moved to Dec. 17
FOREST GROVE - Pacific Head Men's Wrestling Coach Severin Walsh has announced that their scheduled Dec. 16 dual match at Southern Oregon has been moved to Thurs., Dec. 17. The match will take place at 7 p.m., at McNeal Pavilion in Ashland.
The move is necessary in order to allow Pacific wrestlers to complete their fall semester fall examinations. The last day of finals at Pacific is Wed., Dec., 16, which conflicts with the original date of the match.
As a result of the move, Pacific's scheduled dual against Menlo on Dec. 16 is in question. The Oaks were scheduled to face Pacific at 5 p.m., prior to the Boxers' match against the Raiders. Coaches are still working on details as to whether the dual will still take place.

Oregon State 55, Pacific 0
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Competing in their first dual match of the season Sunday, a young Pacific team found themselves no match for one of the top NCAA Division I wrestling teams in the nation as No. 21 Oregon State shut out the Boxers 55-0 in men's wrestling action at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers (3-1) proved quite dominant against a Pacific lineup that included five freshmen, scoring pins of eight of the 10 matches. Six of the falls came under two minutes with three of those coming in under 40 seconds.
Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) had one of two matches to make it out of the first round, taking a 19-5 major decision loss to Mike Mangrum at 141 pounds. Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) was the other, going the distance with Keegan Davis at 157 pounds before falling in a 26-11 technical fall.
Pacific returns to the mat on Saturday, wrestling a pair of dual matches against Clackamas CC and Highline CC in Oregon City.
NOTE: Pacific was also scheduled to wrestle Simon Fraser at Gill Coliseum earlier in the day. Results from that dual were not immediately available.

Pacific Men's Wrestling 2009-10 Season Preview
FOREST GROVE - Severin Walsh could analyze his first season coaching the Pacific men's wrestling program in many ways. He chooses to look at the successes the program achieved in a year that would have been a challenge for any coach.
The Boxers started small and ended small. A roster of 10 wrestlers whittled down to seven by season's end. While that left Pacific basically unable to compete in dual meets, Walsh choses to focus on the individual successes made by a relatively young group that stayed stuck with the program the whole season.
"I was happy with the improvement we made," Walsh said. "We had a lot of individual success. We had small victories with kids who were able to stay healthy and kids winning more college matches than they ever had. I wasn't happy with the team wins and losses, but there was enough individual success and improvement that I considered it a successful year."
As Pacific moves into the 2009-10 season, the Boxers will benefit from the luxury of over doubling the roster while continuing to build around a core of returners that have bought into a new style of training. Walsh has put a heavy emphasis on strength training and living lifestyles that make is easier for his charges to maintain their competitive weights.
On top of that, newcomers and returners alike are showing the aptitude to improve every time they step onto the mat. "Our returners all have great attitudes, but the new kids have all jumped on board and it's almost like they've been here for a while," Walsh said. "It's nice to have a good group of guys that all want to get better and all have goals of becoming All-Americans or national champions."
The most important change, however, comes in the depth of the roster. With wrestlers available at all 10 weight classes, Walsh sees great chances for team successes in both dual meets and the invitational settings. "This year we won't give up 18 points automatically when we start the dual off," Walsh said. "There were matches last year where if we hadn't given up 18 points that we could have won."
125 POUNDS
John Cushman (So., Lakewood, Wash.) returns for his second season on the mat. A three-sport athlete who will be well conditioned after a season of cross country, Cushman was one of the biggest surprises of the 2008-09 season. Pressed into service as the starter at 125 pounds, Cushman won eight matches despite being overmatched in both size and strength.
It was Cushman's heart, conditioning and attitude that kept him in matches, and now a summer of strength training should make him even more competitive. "He has added a considerable amount of strength. It won't be an issue for him," Walsh said. "He's wrestling well and wrestling with a great deal of confidence."
Cushman will be pushed, however, by a very talented newcomer in Zach Binkerd (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.). A four-time Oregon state meet participant and two-time runner-up at 119 pounds, Binkerd amassed 106 victories as a prep wrestler and is perhaps the most highly touted recruit to come to Pacific this season. Binkerd is the son of Kevin Binkerd, a Pacific Hall of Famer. "Zach has been a great addition," Walsh said. "His attitude and his drive to get better means that he has a bright future at Pacific."
133 POUNDS
One of two seniors on the roster, Andrew Wolfe (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) is eager to have his best season yet. Wolfe finished with 13 victories last year, his most as a collegian, and was one of three Pacific wrestlers to win five dual matches. This season, Wolfe has dedicated himself to doing what he can to enjoy success all the way to the regional tournament.
"Andrew is considerably more focused in his last year of wrestling," Walsh said. "He is wrestling real well right now. He has bought into the way that we are training now at Pacific."
141 POUNDS
Pacific will turn to another highly touted newcomer to fill the void at 141 pounds. Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) was a two-time Oregon state champion at 125 and 130 pounds in addition to being a four-time state meet qualifier. Honl finished third at last year's state tournament at 135 pounds while amassing an impressive 44-1 record.
Walsh is excited for Honl's potential as a Pacific athlete, especially considering his success in the prep ranks. "He's the kind of kid whose not training to make the team or to be the best wrestler at Pacific. He's training to be an All-American and national champion."
149 POUNDS
Pacific will enjoy having two returners competing for the starting spot at 149 pounds. Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) led the Boxers with 15 victories last year, wrestling all of his matches at 157 pounds. Like many of his teammates, Kramer spent much of the off-season dedicated to strength training and looks poised to have a breakout season.
"Kody has improved a ton," Walsh said. "He has bought into the strength training. It will be interesting to see what he can do at a weight that he probably should have been at last year."
Andy Duncan (So., Everett, Wash.) will add depth at 149 pounds after getting a season of experience as a freshman. Pressed into a starting role last year at 141 pounds, Duncan won four matches and was a starter in all 14 dual matches. Junior transfer Trent Jones (Jr., Winlock, Wash.) adds additional depth after two seasons at Clackamas Community College.
157 POUNDS
Lane Wiltshire (So., Eagle Creek, Ore.) will focus on work at 157 pounds after competing for the Boxers at three different weight classes as a freshman. Wiltshire filled holes at 165 pounds, 174 pounds and 184 pounds and finished with four victories.
Ken Hyland (Fr., Medford, Ore.) will also compete at 157 pounds. Hyland was a four-year standout in high school and a two-time state placer, wrestling to a fourth place finish at 160 pounds at the 2009 championships.
165 POUNDS
The other senior on the roster, Nathan Shay (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) is looking to finish with his best season in red and black. Shay finished with nine wins as a junior, splitting his matches between 165 pounds and 174 pounds. Shay is also expected to reap the benefits of dedicated off-season of strength training.
"Nathan has dedicated the past year to making himself stronger," Walsh said. "Physically he is stronger than he ever has been and he has made a lot of improvements to his wrestling form."
174 POUNDS
After two seasons wrestling at both 197 pounds and heavyweight, Jordan Branson (Jr., Sheridan, Ore.) has made quite a change to his lifestyle and his wrestling. Branson has bought in to Walsh's program of strength training and changing lifestyles to make himself a better wrestler. The transition has been dramatic as Branson will now wrestle at a lean-and-mean 174 pounds. He may also see some time competing at 184 pounds.
Walsh is excited to see what Branson can do at the lower weight class. "He's stronger than he's ever been," Walsh said. "The weight loss is a testament to his commitment to keep getting better."
184 POUNDS
Cole Banta (Fr., Astoria, Ore.) enters with a chance to earn the Boxers' regular spot at 184 pounds. Banta also comes to Pacific with a strong prep pedigree, qualifying for the state championships each of the last two years and finishing third in 2009 at 189 pounds. Walsh sees potential for Banta to far in his college career.
"He physically has all of the tools," Walsh said. "If we can get him to be believe in himself and his ability, he can go far. His body type, attitude and mental toughness will take him a long way."
197 POUNDS
A pair of newcomers will anchor the 197-pound class. Nik Streng (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) will wrestle down to the weight class after spending his prep career at 215 pounds. Streng finished third at the 2008 Hawaii state championships. "Nik is a well-rounded athlete and student and has been a great addition to the room," Walsh said.
Ron Neu (Fr., Tillamook, Ore.) will join Streng at the weight class. Neu cut down to 189 pounds after wrestling at 215 pounds as a freshman. The move was successful as Neu qualified for the Oregon state meet three times and finished sixth in 2008 at 171 pounds. Walsh believes that Neu will have a bright future once he overcomes some injuries.
285 POUNDS
With Branson's move to 174 pounds, the Boxers will look to Chris McLinden (Fr., Redwood City, Calif.) to anchor the Boxers at heavyweight. McLinden will have a steep learning curve after sitting out injured for the last two years of his high school career. He amassed a 15-3 record as a sophomore, which included 13 pins.

HAMPTON, Va. - Rebecca Hoffman (So., La Mirada, Calif.) earned her first national championship Saturday, winning the unlimited weight class and leading the Boxers to a third place finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Women's Championships at the Convocation Center Arena.
Hoffman captured the unlimited championship with a first round fall over Mercer's Erin Patterson. She is the first Pacific athlete to earn a national title since the Boxers joined the NCWA in 2007.
Hoffman's title led a small, but effective, Pacific team to a third place finish with 35.5 points. Yakima Valley claimed the national title with 73 points. Simon Fraser was second with 57.5 points.
All four competing Pacific wrestlers earned All-American distinction. Caronne Roset (Fr., Pukalani, Hawaii) finished second in the 121-pound weight class, losing in the championship final to Simon Fraser's Laura Wilson in a 19-3 technical fall. Roset finished going 1-2 in her bracket.
Summer Scott (Sr., Castro Valley, Calif.) and Summer Steenberg (So., Kent, Wash.) finished second and third in the 130-pound weight class. Scott was a winner over Steenberg, 6-0, in the third session and lost a close 6-5 decision to Yakima Valley's Ashlee Phy in the final. Steenberg won the consolation final, scoring a first round pin over Auburn's Audra Creech.
