Dear American Wrestling Fan,

I hope that you are all enjoying your summer. As most of you know, one of our assistant coaches, Brad Vering, is leaving today for Beijing to represent the United States, and in turn American University, in the Olympics.

Over the last two weeks, Brad and his association with American have received some great publicity. Below are two articles that recently appeared in the Washington Post and on the NCAA website. Click on the links to read them both.

American University Assistant Wrestling CoachVering to Compete in 2008 Olympic Games

Vering hopes to bring home gold in his second Olympic appearance

WASHINGTON - American University volunteer assistant wrestling coach Brad Vering will represent the United States this summer at the Beijing Olympic Games as a member of the Greco-Roman wrestling team. Vering won the 84 kg/185 lbs. weight class at this past weekend's Olympic Trials in Las Vegas, Nev., to earn his second-consecutive appearance on the Olympic Team.

"Brad is in a position to compete for an Olympic gold medal in Beijing and his experience gained in Athens in 2004 can lead him to accomplish great success," head coach Mark Cody said. "We are thrilled for Brad and are proud that he has been an integral part of American University wrestling."

In the finals Vering defeated Aaron Sieracki in a best of three series to capture the title. Vering won the first match of the series 1-1, 7-0, and then defeated Sieracki 6-0, 3-0 to close out the tournament. Earlier in the day Vering won two matches without allowing a single point scored to advance to the finals.

Vering will enter the Beijing Games coming off his strongest year ever in international competition. Last summer at the 2007 World Championships Vering led the U.S. Greco-Roman Team to its first-ever gold medal. Individually Vering took the silver medal in his weight class and was the highest finishing member of the U.S. team in the tournament. Vering also won the 2007 Pan-American Games and was named the U.S. Olympic Committee's Male Wrestler of the Year. Vering also competed in the 2004 Olympic Games where he lost his only match and did not place.

Vering joined the AU coaching staff prior to the 2006-07 season and was Josh Glenn's training partner before Glenn won the 2007 197 lbs. National Championship. Cody was an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska from 1987-2000 and coached Vering as a member of the Cornhuskers wrestling team. Vering was a three-time All-American at Nebraska and the 2000 197 lbs. National Champion.
American University Wrestling and Duke Ranked No. 1 Academically by NWCA

The Eagles and Blue Devils tied for the highest team GPA of all Division I wrestling programs

WASHINGTON - The American and Duke University wrestling teams have been recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association as the 2007-08 champions of the classroom, having attained the highest team grade point average of Division I wrestling programs, association officials announced Thursday. The wrestling team is the first in AU school history to have the highest team GPA in their respective sport. The team also has achieved NWCA Team Academic All-America status for the third-consecutive year and had four individuals earn Academic All-America status.

The Eagles have achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.335, tying them with Duke as the top Div. I wrestling teams academically. AU had 10 members of its team record a GPA of at least 3.0 in the fall and had four who recorded at least a 3.5. Last year, AU finished with the seventh highest team GPA in Div. I wrestling and was ranked 10th following the 2005-'06 season.

American and Stanford were the only schools this year to rank in the top 10 academically and also place in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships. The Eagles have accomplished this feat in three-consecutive years, placing 23rd at the 2008 championships and 17th in 2007 and 2006.

"I think our student-athletes are a great reflection of the academic excellence of American University," commented Head Coach Mark Cody. "AU students hail from all over the world. They are a diverse group with many different passions -- ours happens to be wrestling. I'm proud of this award, it's a great achievement that our student-athletes have excelled at their sport while succeeding above every other NCAA wrestling program academically."

Individually, senior Josh Glenn, junior Christopher Stout and sophomores Jasen Borshoff and Mike Cannon were each named NWCA Academic All-Americans. Cannon, a business administration major specializing in accounting, earned Academic All-America status for the second straight year with a cumulative GPA of 3.314. Last year, Cannon became AU's first underclassman to earn All-America status and this year he becomes AU's first recipient of multiple Academic All-America awards.

For Glenn, Borshoff and Stout, their recognition as Academic All-Americans is the first of their careers. Glenn, who in 2007 became AU's only national champion in any sport, has maintained a 3.081 GPA as a double-major in international studies and law and society. He was recently honored by the university as the recipient of the Stafford H. Cassell Award given annually to the senior who best exemplifies the traits of Mr. Cassell: total and selfless dedication to the university, profound energy, and reliability as well as intellectual curiosity, friendliness, and helpfulness. Borshoff has achieved a 3.505 GPA and will begin work on his masters degree at AU in the fall after graduating with his bachelors in health promotion in three years. Stout, a business administration major specializing in accounting, has a 3.27 GPA.

"We have worked very hard to put a program in place that helps our student-athletes succeed," added Cody. "As an AU wrestler you are expected to attend every class, to sit in the first two rows and to stay one lesson ahead of the syllabus during your studies. While our program emphasizes being a student first and athlete second, our goal is always to excel in both."

AU's four individual Academic All-Americans ties the program with Duke, Iowa and Liberty for the most individual honors this season. It is also the highest single-season total in AU wrestling's history. In the last four years, Coach Cody's wrestlers have earned nine Academic All-America honors.
The NWCA's team rankings are based on the average GPA of 12 student-athletes from each team, including the 10 who competed at their conference qualifier. For individuals to earn Academic All-America status they must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule, or been an NCAA All-American with at least a 3.0 GPA.

American University's Josh Glenn and Mike Cannon Earn All-America Status at 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships

For only the second time in program history, the American University wrestling team crowned two All-American's at this weekend's NCAA Championships. Senior Josh Glenn closed out his career with his third-consecutive All-America honor while sophomore Mike Cannon earned All-America status for the first time in his career.

"I'm so proud of these guys," Head Coach Mark Cody said. "Josh has had an incredible career. It's tough enough to get on the podium once at the NCAA Championships but he's done it three years in a row now for us and has also won a national championship. I just can't say enough about what Josh has done at American and what he will always mean to our program. Mike has come such a long way since his freshman year. He came to American as a one-time state champion in Maryland and know he's on the podium at the NCAA Championships as one of the best wrestlers in the country."

Glenn placed fifth at 197 lbs. to earn All-America while Cannon placed sixth at 165 lbs. Glenn, who will graduate this May as the most decorated student-athlete in program history, is the only wrestler to win multiple All-America honors while Cannon is now just the fourth AU wrestler to earn one of six All-America honors.
Josh Glenn Closes Out American University Wrestling Career as Three-Time All-American, Mike Cannon Earns First All-America Honor

Glenn, the most decorated wrestler in AU history, finished his career Saturday afternoon with an 11-6 decision

St. Louis, Mo. - American University senior Josh Glenn and sophomore Mike Cannon finished their run at the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships Saturday morning with two matches in the championships medal round. For Glenn, the matches marked the end of AU wrestling's most celebrated career while for Cannon, the matches signified the beginning of a great career.

"I'm so proud of these guys," Head Coach Mark Cody said. "It's been a tough season and I'm just so proud of they way they finished up. Our main goal on the season is to do well at the NCAA Championships and we have done just that. We are going to finish ahead of 12 teams in the team standings that we lost to earlier in the year in dual meets and that is because of our two All-Americans, Josh Glenn and Mike Cannon."

Glenn's final match as a member of the American University wrestling team came against sixth seed Dallas Herbst from Wisconsin in the fifth/sixth place match. As he had so many times in his career, Glenn quickly jumped out to an early lead, scoring a takedown 13 seconds into the match. Glenn remained aggressive throughout the first period, scoring two sets of back points for a 6-0 lead and accumulating more than two minutes of riding time before the start of the second. In the second, Glenn chose to begin neutral and was taken down by Herbst to bring the score to 6-3. A quick reversal and nearfall regained the momentum in Glenn's favor and heading into the third he held a 10-3 lead. Herbst scored a takedown in the third and Glenn was hit with a one point penalty for stalling, but after riding time was added, Glenn took the decision and fifth place at the tournament, 11-6.

"I'm proud of Josh," Cody said. "He's had an incredible career. It's tough enough to get on the podium at the NCAA Championships but he's done it three years in a row now for us and has won a national title. I just can't say enough about what Josh has done at American and what he will always mean to our program, on the mat and off. He's an incredible person and I'm glad that we've all had the opportunity to know him."

Glenn's first match on Saturday ended with the defending national champion on the wrong end of a 9-6 decision to seventh seed Hudson Taylor from Maryland. Glenn held a 2-1 lead heading into the second after a late first period takedown had put him ahead. Beginning the second on bottom, Glenn escaped from Taylor and followed up with a takedown to go ahead 5-1 at the 4:00 mark. Glenn then began the third on top with a 5-2 lead but that margin quickly slipped away as Taylor scored a reversal to move the score to 5-4. An escape by Glenn put him back up by two but after a takedown by Taylor which tied the score and three nearfall points, Taylor took the decision, 6-9.

Glenn has become the face of American University wrestling during his four year tenure with the team. He has recorded 110 career wins at AU, second most in program history, is the school's only winner of multiple All-America honors, a feat which he's accomplished three times, and became the school's first Div. I National Champion.

Cannon's final match of the year came in the fifth/sixth place match where he lost a 13-6 decision to eighth seed Moza Fay from Northern Iowa. Cannon came out quickly against Fay and scored a takedown for an early 2-0 lead. Fay answered back though with an escape and takedown of his own to take the lead, 2-3, before scoring a nearfall at the end of the period to move the score to 2-5. Cannon scored a second takedown in the second period to close to within two points of Fay, 4-6, but he would get no closer the rest of the way. Fay used a takedown and nearfall in the third period to increase his lead and with riding time advantage, Fay took the decision, 6-13.

Despite the loss, Cannon finished in sixth-place overall and earned All-America status, a feat which has only been accomplished five times in AU history.

"Mike has come such a long way since his freshman year," Cody said. "Brad Vering put it best earlier when he mentioned how much work we put into him. He came to American as a one-time state champion in Maryland and know he's on the podium at the NCAA Championships, competing against the best in the country. Were going to get back to work in a few weeks and come back next year looking for a national title."

Cannon lost his first match of the day by fall to fourth seed Mack Lewnes from Cornell. Lewnes was first to get on the board with a takedown midway through the first period for a 0-2 lead. Cannon escaped shortly after to move the score to 1-2 but a second takedown put Lewnes up by three. Cannon began the second on top, trailing 2-4, but quickly fell further behind when Lewnes scored a reversal off the opening whistle. Trailing 3-8 after Lewnes' third takedown of the match, Cannon got caught in a cradle and was pinned at 4:18.

Final team scores are not yet available, please check back with AUEagles.com for an update when they are.
American University's Glenn Secures Third-Consecutive All-America Honor and Advances to NCAA Wrestling Championships Semifinals

St. Louis, Mo. - Defending 197 lbs. NCAA National Champion Josh Glenn secured his third-consecutive All-America honor with a 10-5 decision early Friday and with the win advanced to the semifinals of the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Glenn can now finish no lower than sixth place at this year's championships while 165 lbs. 10th seed Mike Cannon, who lost his first match of the tournament Friday morning, will have to win his first wrestleback match this evening to secure at least an eighth-place finish and his first All-America honor.

Glenn continued his title defense and secured his third-consecutive All-America honor with a 10-5 decision over eighth seed Craig Brester from Nebraska. Glenn and Brester finished the first period in a scoreless tie but Glenn quickly got on the board in the second. Beginning on top, Glenn rode Brester for the entire period and scored three sets of back points to take a 6-0 lead into the third. Glenn again began on top in the third but this time gave up two points to Brester on a reversal. With a 6-2 lead, Glenn escaped from Brester and quickly turned to score a takedown, moving his lead to 9-2. Brester then went on to score three points but with riding time advantage, Glenn took the decision, 10-5.

Glenn's victory advances him to the championship semifinals which will take place during session IV this evening beginning at 6 p.m. central time. Glenn's semifinal opponent is fourth seed Wynn Michalak from Central Michigan who defeated fifth seed Max Askren from Missouri in the quarterfinals, 5-4. Glenn and Michalak have not met this year as Glenn was out of the AU lineup when the two teams met at the Northeast Duals in November. A win over Michalak will earn Glenn a second-consecutive berth into the NCAA Championships finals.

Glenn's appearance in the championship semifinals guarantees that he will finish no lower than sixth at this year's championships and secures him his third-consecutive All-America honor. Glenn is American's only winner of multiple All-American awards after placing fourth as a sophomore at 184 lbs. and winning the NCAA National Championship last year as a junior at 197 lbs.

Cannon's championship bid ended during Friday's morning session as he was pinned by second seed Mark Perry from Iowa at 0:47. Cannon came out of the chute quickly, getting in on Perry's leg and nearly locking in a cradle but Perry rolled through it and put Cannon in a cradle of his own. After fighting for several seconds, Cannon's shoulders finally hit the mat and the match was called at 0:47.

Cannon is still alive in the tournament despite the loss and can still place as high as third in the wrestlebacks. Cannon will be back in action this evening in the fourth consolation round. If Cannon wins that match he will wrestle a second consolation match during the evening session and will assure himself no worse than an eighth-place finish and his first All-America honor.

Eagles fans, please remember that this evening's session IV can be seen live on ESPNU and ESPN360.com beginning at 6 p.m. central time. ESPNU and ESPN360.com will bring all the action of both session IV and the championships medal round beginning Saturday morning at 10 a.m. central time into your home before ESPN broadcasts the finals round live beginning at 7:30 central time tomorrow night.

Already this year Josh has laid claim to the 197 lbs. Midlands Championship, known throughout the country as college wrestling's second most difficult tournament, and has surpassed the 100 win plateau, a feat only two other AU wrestlers have accomplished.

Josh has made a name for himself as one of the premier wrestlers in his weight class and has two All-America awards to prove it. Josh is also a two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Champion, was the 2007 EIWA Co-Wrestler of the Year and 2005 EIWA Freshman of the Year to boot.

We at American University would like to invite you to be a part of Josh's journey back to the NCAA Championships as he tries to defend his National Championship. American University Wrestling Falls in Final Dual Meet of the Year, 26-16, at Binghamton

No. 1 Josh Glenn made his return to the mat with a second period pin and moved his current unbeaten streak to 35 matchesFeb. 21, 2008

Vestal, N.Y. - The American University wrestling lost to Binghamton University on Thursday, 26-16, in the team's final dual meet of the season. No. 1 Josh Glenn made his return to the mat after a three week layoff and won by pin fall at 197 lbs. but the senior's 35th consecutive win, coming in front of his hometown crowd, was not enough to propel the Eagles to victory.

The loss dropped American's overall record to 3-15 while its Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association record remained at 1-5. Binghamton's overall record improved to 13-11 with the victory. Thursday's dual was the final of the season for American as its now will prepare for the EIWA Tournament in two weeks.
Thursday's dual started at 125 lbs. where Jasen Borshoff returned to the mat for the first time in nearly a month. Wrestling against BU's Tyler Malmberg, Borshoff was unable to mount an effective offensive attack and lost by major decision, 7-15. After the first bout the team scores stood at 0-4 in favor of the Bearcats.

Matt Mariacher and Mike Kleeman took the mat next at 133 lbs. in a match which went scoreless for the first three minutes. Beginning the second period down, Mariacher escaped from Kleeman just 10 seconds into the frame to break the tie and go ahead, 1-0. The third period began with Mariacher ahead by the same margin and on top. Maraicher effectively used a waist lock and under hook to maintain his control over Kleeman and after riding him out for the entire period, Mariacher took the decision, 2-0, with advantage time. The victory brought American to within one point of BU in the team scores, 3-4.

Mariacher's victory improved his overall record to 14-12 while his dual meet record moved to 10-8.
Riding a nine-match win streak into competition Thursday, 141-pounder Kyle Borshoff jumped on top of Anwar Goeres early with a takedown and near fall which put him ahead, 4-0, 40 seconds into the match. K. Borshoff scored again in the first period with a single-leg takedown and after the match's first 3:00, K. Borshoff had built himself a comfortable 6-1 lead. On top the begin the second, K. Borshoff draped himself across Goeres back and rode him out for the full length of the period. K. Borshoff chose to begin the third period down and extended his lead to 7-1 with an escape at the 5:25 mark. Goeres attempted a comeback with two takedowns in the match's final minute but K. Borshoff's lead was too much for the Bearcat to overcome and with the riding time advantage, K. Borshoff took the decision, 10-5. K. Borshoff's win also put AU ahead on the scoreboard for the first time in the dual, 6-4.

Thursday's victory was K. Borshoff's 10th in as many matches and improved his overall record to 22-6. K. Borshoff has not lost in this calendar year.

AU's win streak was halted at two matches as No. 18 Kyle Fried defeated Chris Clarke at 149 lbs. by a score of 11-5. The decision in favor of BU moved it back head of the Eagles in the team scores, 6-7.
V
The Bearcats extended their lead in the team scores to 6-11 as Nate Patterson defeated Christopher Stout at 157 lbs., 13-0, to end Stout's six-match win streak.

With his own nine-match win streak on the line, No. 6 Mike Cannon got on the board early with two takedowns of Brett Nelson by the 1:13 mark of their 165 lbs. match. With a 4-1 lead, Cannon used the remainder of the first period to build up advantage time and began the second period down, leading by the same margin. Nelson cut Cannon to begin the second and Cannon quickly took advantage with a double-leg takedown 18 seconds into the period to extend his lead to 7-1. Cannon scored yet another takedown before one minute had elapsed in the period and by the time the period ended, Cannon found himself ahead of Nelson, 13-4. With the team scores in mind, Cannon took down and cut Patterson four times in the third period and with his riding time advantage Cannon won the match by tech-fall, 23-8. Cannon's tech-fall brought AU to within one in the team scores, 10-11, as it was only worth four points because he did not score back points.

Cannon improved his current win streak to 10 matches with the victory and remained unbeaten in the new year. The victory also improved his overall record to 22-2 and was his team leading fourth tech-fall of the season.

Binghamton increased their team lead over AU with victories in the next two weight classes and all but assured them the victory. Josh Patterson earned a first period fall over Jonathon Powell at 174 lbs. and Anthony Esposito defeated Andy Semple at 184 lbs., 4-2.

Glenn, who grew up in the suburbs of Binghamton, N.Y., returned to the mat at 197 lbs. for the first time since Feb. 3 and showed no ill-effects of the layoff, scoring a takedown and near fall of Corey Waite 19 seconds into the match. Glenn remained aggressive in front of his hometown crowd and by the 1:32 mark was already ahead 8-3. Leading 10-4, Glenn deferred his decision to start the second period and began on top, chopping Waite down to remain in control. After riding Waite for approximately 45 seconds, Glenn caught the Bearcat in a cradle and ended the match at the 3:59 mark with a pin. Glenn's win narrowed Binghamton's lead over AU in the team scores to 16-20.

With the win, Glenn improved to 12-0 overall and 8-0 in dual meets. Glenn's current win streak extends as far back as December of 2006 as he has not lost in his last 35 matches. The victory was the 103rd of Glenn's career, moving him to within two of Chris Toth for second on AU's all-time wins list.
Binghamton secured its victory with a Mike Patterson pin of Brooks Keefer in the first round of their heavyweight match.

American's next action will come in two weeks at the EIWA Tournament being held this year on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College, March 7-8. American will look to crown two champions at this year's tournament as both Glenn and Cannon are expected to enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed.

American University: Striving to Become an All-American, On and Off the Mat

Sophomore Mike Cannon became an Academic All-American last year and this year has his sights set on a national title

Sophomore Mike Cannon knew in high school the he had the talent to win on the wrestling mat and the smarts to excel in college. That much was clear by his Asics/Vaughan Freestyle National Championship and his Chopticon High School Student of the Year award. What Mike did not know was how far his talent could take him and the level of success he would one day attain as a member of the American University wrestling team.

"I don't know if I expected to come as far as I have," Cannon said. "But looking at my circumstances, I'm not surprised."

Mike made his decision to attend AU for several reasons. He felt the campus was nice, he liked that it was a small school, but most importantly, Mike chose American because of Head Coach Mark Cody and his coaching staff.

"My main selling point was Coach Cody and his background as an assistant coach at Nebraska and Oklahoma State," Cannon said. "I believe that we have the best coaching staff in the country and that with a strong work ethic, anyone of the guys training in our wrestling room can achieve their goals."
Mike's goals are twofold. First and foremost, he wants to become a NCAA National Champion. As the No. 6 wrestler at 165 lbs. in the country he is well on his way to accomplishing that. Secondly, Mike wants uphold his reputation as a true student-athlete, excelling not only on the mat, but off it as well.

And he has done just that. Last year Mike helped the Eagles wrestling team to an overall GPA of 3.095 and its second-consecutive National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-America honor. The team finished the year with the seventh highest GPA of any Div. I wrestling program and was one of only two academically top-10 teams to also place in the top-20 at the NCAA Championships.

Mike's individual work in the classroom went a long way to helping the Eagles achieve that feat. As a business major in the Kogod School of Business, Mike has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.314 and last season was named only the program's fifth individual Academic All-American and was the first to do so as an under-classmen.

"My dad was extremely happy about it," Mike said. "My parents know that wrestling is great for me while I'm in school but eventually it will be over and I'll have to move on to something else."
That something else could be one of any number of things for Mike. He has had thoughts of coaching right out of college, or of perhaps continuing his wrestling career professionally, or maybe even opening his own business as a public accountant. For now though, those decisions loom too far in the future for a student-athlete not yet halfway through his career.

"We'll see," Cannon said. "It's all in the future and depends on many things. It depends on how I feel, how my body holds up, what my interests are. For now I'm enjoying being a student-athlete."

And what's not to enjoy. This season Mike is well on his way to his second-consecutive Academic All-America honor and is also nearing his first goal of becoming a national champion, a feat which has only been accomplished once by an AU wrestler.

"I know it won't be easy," Cannon said. "I just need to keep working hard and keep believing in my coaches and we'll get there. I would love to be able to raise a national championship banner with my name on it in Bender Arena."

That moment may not be too far off for Mike. This season he has an overall record of 21-2 and has won each of his last nine matches, including seven with bonus points. Mike has also been recognized all season on a national level in the InterMat/NWCA/NWMA Division I Individual Rankings as one of the top 165 lbs. wrestlers in the country. He has been ranked as high as sixth the last two weeks, signifying his highest ranking to date. Although they are mere speculation, if the rankings were to hold true Mike would join Daniel Waters, '05, and Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov, '06, as the third Eagles wrestler in four years to earn both All-America and Academic All-America honors in the same season.

"It's exciting really to have an opportunity to have my name associated with the best wrestlers in our program's history," Cannon said. "I just hope that I can continue building on the success that I have had until I reach my goal."
American University Wrestling Drops Final EIWA Dual to Bucknell, 30-14

No. 6 Mike Cannon recorded his 50th career win on Sunday against No. 19 Andy Rendos at 165 lbs.

Lewisburg, Pa. - The American University wrestling team lost its final Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association dual of the year Sunday, falling to Bucknell 30-14 at Davis Gym. Despite the loss, American received wins at four weight classes including No. 6 Mike Cannon's 50th career win against No. 19 Andy Rendos at 165 lbs.

American's record drops to 3-14 with the loss while its EIWA mark falls to 1-5. Bucknell meanwhile improved to 9-10-1 with the win and 2-3 in the EIWA. Sunday's dual was the third in a four match road trip to close out AU's season.

Sunday's match began with an American forfeit at heavyweight and 125 lbs., putting AU in an early hole down 0-12.

Freshman Matt Mariacher started the action at 133 lbs. against his sixth ranked opponent of the year, No. 18 David Marble. Marble scored on a single-leg takedown at the 1:36 mark to take a 0-2 lead over Mariacher and rode out the period in control. Mariacher began the second period on top but lost control of Marble and gave up two points for a reversal. Trailing 2-6 at the beginning of the third, Mariacher chose to start down and scored a reversal with one minute remaining in the match to get to within two points, 4-6. Marble took control of the match after that point though and with riding time advantage took the decision, 4-10.

Kyle Borshoff scored early against Luke Chohany at 141 lbs. with a takedown 31 seconds into the first period. Borshoff was awarded three back points at the end of the first and took a 5-0 lead with 2:29 of riding time into the second. Chosing to start the period down, Borshoff extended his lead to 7-0 early in the frame with a reversal and finished the period on top, 9-1. Borshoff spent the first minute of the third period on top trying to turn Chohany but settled instead for cutting Chohany and scoring another takedown before time ran out. After his 4:17 of riding time was added to the final score, Borshoff won the match by major decision, 12-3.

With the win, Borshoff remains perfect in EIWA competition at 6-0 and improves his overall record to 21-6.

Kevin LeValley defeated Chris Clarke at 149 lbs. by technical-fall, 20-5, in the second period. Christopher Stout took down Brantley Hooks 54 seconds into the first period of their 157 lbs. match and remained in control of the Bison for the duration of the period. Stout and Hooks began the second period neutral but would not stay that way long as Stout quickly scored a second takedown to move his lead to 4-0. Stout again maintained an advantage over Hooks for the remainder of the period and by the time the third period began he had accrued 3:45 of riding time. Less than 45 seconds into the third period, Stout had escaped from his down starting position and scored his third takedown of the match to increase his lead to 7-0. After being awarded one point for stalling and one for his five-plus minutes of riding time, Stout won the match by major decision, 10-0.

Stout now stands at 21-10 on the year and 4-2 in the EIWA. The win was Stout's 10th this season by major decision as he leads the team with 15 bonus point victories.

Cannon took the mat next against No. 19 Andy Rendos, seeking his 50th career win. The grapplers moved late into the first period in a scoreless tie when suddenly Cannon nearly ended the match . Cannon used Rendos' own momentum against him as he threw the Bison to the mat with a headlock that landed him on his back. Unable to score the fall, Cannon attempted to reset his position and in that brief instance Rendos scored a reversal to close the gap to 5-2. Cannon took a 6-2 lead into the second period and moved ahead 8-2 when he scored his second set of back points with a cradle. Just like in the first period though Rendos reversed out of the maneuver as Cannon reset himself and cut the lead to 8-4. Cannon would not be on the defensive for long though, using a switch to score a reversal of his own and move the score to 10-4. Rendos would reverse once more before the end of the period, sending the match into the third with Cannon ahead 10-6. Cannon began the final period down, giving Rendos an opportunity to negate his riding time advantage. With the 10-6 lead though Cannon did not need the advantage time and after spending 1:42 on bottom Cannon escaped to win the match by a final score of 11-6.

The win improves Cannon's overall record this season to 21-2 and keeps his record against the EIWA perfect at 6-0. Sunday's victory over Rendos was the 50th of Cannon's career and his third this season over a ranked opponent. Cannon is now just 18 wins shy of cracking AU's all-time wins list.
American's win streak was halted at two matches when Shane Riccio pinned Jonathon Powell in the first period of their 174 lbs. match and Brooks Keefer lost by major decision to David Thompson at 184 lbs.

Andy Semple scored first on Sean LoCurto as he countered LoCurto's shot late in the first period and took a 2-0 lead into the second. The two began the second period neutral before LoCurto scored a takedown with under ten seconds remaining in the frame to even the score. Semple began the third down and reversed LoCurto as he attempted a cradle, giving him a 4-2 advantage. Semple remained aggressive late in the final period, using a cross face and under hook to try and turn LoCurto. Semple was unable to get the Bison to his back though, instead racking up 2:05 of riding time. With the advantage time, Semple took the decision, 5-2.

Semple's victory was just his third of the season but his second in the EIWA. The win improves Semple's overall record to 3-19 and his conference record to 2-4.

The AU wrestling team will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., when it travels to Binghamton University for its final dual meet of the season.

American University Wrestling Falls to No. 23 Maryland, 37-13

No. 6 Mike Cannon earned his seventh fall of the year at 165 lbs. but could not propel his team to victory

College Park, Md. - The American University wrestling team was defeated Wednesday night, 37-14, by No. 23 University of Maryland in the Comcast Pavilion. No. 6 Mike Cannon gave AU its first lead of the night, 14-13, with his seventh fall of the year but the Eagles' upper weights were unable to hold off the Terps.
The loss, which drops AU to 3-13 overall on the year, was the Eagles' sixth this season against a ranked opponent. Maryland on the other hand improves to 14-4 with the win.

Action started Wednesday at 125 lbs. where American was forced to forfeit to Brendan Byrne, putting the Terps up 6-0 to begin the match.

Matt Mariacher and Steven Bell squared off at 133 lbs. with Bell scoring first with a takedown at the 1:30 mark. Mariacher escaped from Bell after just 22 seconds of riding time and had the choice to begin the second period. Trailing 2-1, Mariacher chose to begin the period down and tied the match at two with 1:03 left in the period after breaking Bell's waist lock. As time wound down in the second, Mariacher landed a single leg shot for his first lead of the night, 4-2, gaining control just before the buzzer sounded. Bell started the third period down and scored a reversal to even the score quickly. After approximately one minute of riding time, Mariacher escaped Bell to take a 5-4 lead. Bell's riding time advantage over Mariacher tied the score at five and moved the match into sudden victory overtime. Bell opened the overtime period with a shot that Mariacher was able to avoid but a second shot caught the freshman and ended the match, 7-5, in favor of Bell Kyle Borshoff took a 2-0 lead over Mookie Golden at 141 lbs. 90 seconds into the match with a takedown and rode him for over one minute before scoring three back points near the 2:30 mark. Borshoff quickly rolled Golden to his back a second time and was awarded two more back points as the first period buzzer sounded. Borshoff began the second down and escaped from Golden to push his lead to 8-0. A takedown by Borshoff and subsequent escape by Golden moved the score to 10-1, where it would stay until the beginning of the third. Borshoff again started the period down and again scored quickly with an escape. Leading 11-1, Borshoff took Golden down twice more before the end of the match and with more than two minutes of riding time, Borshoff earned a tech-fall over Golden, 17-2. AU cut into Maryland's lead with the victory, moving the team scores to 5-9.

Borshoff's tech-fall was his second of the season and his eighth-consecutive win. His overall record now stands at 20-6 while he is 13-3 in dual meets. Chris Clarke wrestled for AU at 149 lbs. against Eric Medina who earned a major decision over the Eagle, 11-2, and put the Terps up by eight in the team scores, 5-13.
Christopher Stout got on the scoreboard first at 157 lbs. with a takedown of Brian Letters approximately two minutes in. The score was tied quickly though as Letters reversed Stout before the end of the period. Stout began the second on top and remained in control for the entire period despite several near escapes by Letters. At one point at the end of the period it looked as if Letters had reversed Stout as he attempted a cradle for back points but Stout was able to regain control before giving up any points. Stout started period three down with the score still tied, 2-2. At the 6:30 mark, Letters was called for a violation which put Stout ahead, 3-2. Letters was forced to cut Stout in hopes of scoring a last second takedown to even the score but was stalemated by Stout who held off the Terp for a 4-2 decision. The decision put American back within reach in the team scores as they trailed by just five, 8-13.

Stout's overall record improves to 20-10 with the win. Stout has won each of his last five matches and seven of his last eight.

Cannon, who garnered his highest individual ranking this season on Wednesday of sixth, took the mat at 165 lbs. against Ryan Kennett and wasted little time, scoring a takedown just 28 seconds in. Cannon spent the next 1:30 riding Kennett and scored two back points before the action was stopped for a dangerous position. Cannon went right back to work after the restart and at the end of the first period was leading, 4-0, with more than 2:32 of riding time. Cannon chose to being the second down and escaped before the midway point to increase his lead to five. Cannon countered a Kennett shot at the 3:30 mark after Kennett lost his balance and scored five points on the maneuver, two for a takedown and three for a near fall. The wrestlers began the third period neutral but Cannon was quick to get on the offensive, taking Kennett down and ending the match with a fall at 5:28. AU took its first lead in the team scores with the fall, 14-13.
Cannon improves to 20-2 overall with the win and 15-1 in dual meets. Cannon has won 14 matches with bonus points, including a team-high seven by pin fall.

American's lead was short lived as the Terrapins took the next four weight classes and the match, 37-14.
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to meet Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association foe Bucknell. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

American University's Josh Glenn Seeks Second-Consecutive NCAA Championship

Josh Glenn became American University's first-ever wrestling National Champion last year and at 11-0 this year stands as the heavy favorite to recapture the title.

A press kit containing more information on Josh's career has been made available on-line at AUEagles.com

American University Wrestling Falls to Old Dominion in Final Home Dual of the Season, 31-12

Senior No. 1 Josh Glenn won his final match inside of Bender Arena and the 102nd of his career, 4-2

WASHINGTON - The American University wrestling team dropped its final home dual meet of the year Sunday afternoon, 31-12, to No. 22 Old Dominion. Senior No. 1 Josh Glenn ended his career inside of Bender Arena with a 4-2 decision for the 102nd win of his career.

Due to an injury, AU was unable to wrestle at the starting weight of 125 lbs. and began the dual with a forfeit to No. 12 James Nicholson.

Freshman Matt Mariacher then took the mat at 133 lbs. against No. 18 Kyle Hatter, marking the fifth time this season that Mariacher has wrestled a ranked opponent. Mariacher was unable to score any offensive points against Hatter and lost an 8-2 decision.

AU scored its first "W" of the day at 141 lbs. as Kyle Borshoff upset No. 18 Ryan Williams. Borshoff took his first lead in the first period with a takedown of Williams and broke a 2-2 tie in the second with a counter move off a Williams shot. Borshoff began the third frame down with a 4-2 lead and escaped from Williams to move the score to 5-2 where it would stay.
The win was Borshoff's 18th of the year and his first against a ranked opponent.
Chris Clarke was unable to build on the momentum created by Borshoff and lost by tech-fall, 28-10, to Kaylen Baxter at 149 lbs.

Christopher Stout won a back and forth battle with Dan Rivera at 157 lbs. as AU attempted to keep the team scores within reach. Stout scored a takedown at 2:02 for a 2-0 lead but had his advantage cut in half when a dangerous maneuver penalty was called against him. A second dangerous maneuver penalty called against Stout early in the second tied the score at 2. Rivera took his first lead in the match, 3-2, with a last second escaped as he slipped from Stout's hold as he attempted to score back points. Stout began the third down but was cut by Rivera because of his riding time advantage to retie the score, 3-3. Stout fended off Rivera's attack throughout the period and with under 30 seconds remaining, Stout caught Rivera and scored a takedown. With riding time advantage, Stout took the decision, 6-3.

Stout improved to 15-9 overall with the win and has now won his last three matches.
No. 7 Mike Cannon gave AU a two-bout win streak with a 5-3 decision over No. 18 Chris Brown at 165 lbs. Cannon jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a takedown just 22 seconds into the first but Brown escaped before the one-minute mark and the two grapplers took a 2-1 score into round two. Cannon began the second on top and rode Brown for the entire period, racking up 2:34 of riding time heading into the third. Brown cut Cannon to begin the third which moved the score to 3-1 and after an exciting period in which both wrestlers refused to give an inch to the other Cannon came away on top with a 5-3 decision.

Cannon is now 18-3 on the season and 2-1 against ranked opponents.
The Eagles winning streak was short lived as Jonathon Powell lost by tech-fall, 15-0, to Nick Pullano and Andy Semple was pinned by Jesse Strawn in the second period.

After celebrating his historic four-year career with a pre-meet senior day celebration, Glenn returned the mat in Bender Arena for the final time against David Mendoza. Glenn and Mendoza used much of the first period to feel each other out and went into the second locked in a scoreless tie. The tie was finally broken early in the second when Glenn connected on a shot at 3:13. The defending National Champion remained in control of Mendoza for the duration of the period and took a 2-0 advantage into the third and final frame. Starting in the down position, Glenn quickly escaped Mendoza's hold to up his advantage to 3-0. With under one minute remaining in the match, Glenn was caught by a Mendoza shot which brought the score to within one, 3-2, but after Mendoza was forced to cut Glenn the senior held off his opponent for the 4-2 decision.

The win improves Glenn to 11-0 overall this year and 7-0 in dual meets. Glenn has now won 34 consecutive matches dating back to December of 2006 and is the third winningest wrestler in AU history with 102 for his career.

The dual wrapped up at heavyweight where Andy Totusek pinned Brooks Keefer late in the first period.

The Eagles will be back in action next Sunday, Feb. 10, against Rutgers in New Brunswick, N.J.

American University Wrestling's Final Home Dual Moved to 2 p.m. Sunday

Sunday's home wrestling meet between American University and No. 22 Old Dominion has been pushed back one hour to 2 p.m., Department of Athletics and Recreation officials announced Tuesday. Sunday will be the final home dual of the year for the Eagles and AU's lone senior, No. 1 Josh Glenn, will be honored with a pre-meet ceremony.

AU (3-10, 1-3 EIWA) has had its difficulties in dual meets this year but is looking to carry the momentum of last Tuesday's 24-13 win over Campbell into Sunday's dual with the Monarchs. Four Eagles are currently celebrating streaks of three or more consecutive wins while six of Sunday's starters are coming off victories.

Glenn has been the face of AU wrestling for the last four years, bringing national attention to a rebuilding program. Glenn recently celebrated his 100th career victory, a 10-5 decision over No. 11 Daren Burns of UNC Greensboro, and became only the third Eagle to join the century club. Last year, Glenn became the program's and university's first Division I NCAA Champion with a 6-4 sudden victory win over Iowa State's Kurt Backes. Among his numerous accomplishments Glenn also boasts two All-America honors, two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships and one Midlands Championship.

This year Glenn is a perfect 10-0 with two falls, two major decisions and one tech-fall. Three of Glenn's 10 opponents have been ranked in the top-20 and he has come away from those matches with a combined score of 32-15. Including last year's championship run, Glenn has now won 34 consecutive matches.

Glenn is joined on the mat this year by several underclassmen looking to follow in his footsteps. Sophomore No. 7 Mike Cannon, who placed second at last year's EIWA Tournament, has posted a 17-3 overall record and is 12-1 in duals. Cannon has a team-high six wins by fall, three major decisions and three tech-falls. This year he has already beaten current No. 8 Trevor Stewart from Central Michigan, 7-2, and lost a close 11-7 decision to current No. 5 Jacob Diffenbach of Oklahoma State. Cannon emerged as one of the top wrestlers at 165 lbs. last year and this year is looking to finish on the podium at the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore Kyle Borshoff entered the season ranked 17th at 141 lbs. and has flirted with a top-20 ranking throughout the season. Borshoff is currently 17-6 overall on the year with a 10-3 dual record and has five falls, one major decision and one tech-fall. He has proven throughout his brief career that he can hang with the nation's elite, dropping a close 9-4 decision to Oklahoma State's No. 2 Nathan Morgan at the Northeast Duals this year and upsetting then No. 1 Max Meltzer from Harvard in last year's EIWA Tournament. Borshoff was an NCAA Qualifier as a freshman and this year he hopes to be back on the national stage.

True freshman Matt Mariacher has made a splash for AU, starting all season at 133 lbs. and posting a 12-9 overall mark with an 8-5 record in dual meets. Mariacher has been matched up with some of the best wrestlers in the country in his first season and is getting invaluable on-the-job training in the process. At the Northeast Duals, Mariacher was pitted against No. 1 Coleman Scott from Oklahoma State in a match which he lost 6-0 and at the Midlands Championships Mariacher dropped a close 4-2 decision to Illinois' No. 9 Jim Kennedy.

Old Dominion (13-3, 4-1 CAA) is coming off a 30-6 victory over Bucknell on Sunday and will be bringing a very strong team into Sunday's dual as the Monarchs are currently ranked No. 22. At 125 lbs., No. 12 James Nicholson has comprised a 25-9 overall record as a redshirt freshman and has one win by fall, six by major decision and three by tech-fall. Junior Ryan Williams is currently No. 17 at 141 lbs. with a 32-10 overall mark, two pins, 10 major decisions and one tech-fall. No 20 Chris Brown has a 28-9 overall record at 165 lbs., one win by fall and nine major decisions.

Old Dominion will first wrestle at George Mason University on Sunday before making its way to Washington, D.C.

Tickets are available in advance for Sunday's dual at $9 for adults and $5 for youth. To order your tickets, call 202-885-TIXX.

Josh Glenn Wins American University Wrestling's First Midlands Tournament Championship

Josh Glenn became AU wrestling's first Midlands Tournament Champion on Sunday, capturing one of the sports most prestigious titles

Senior wrestler Josh Glenn won the 197 lbs. Midlands Championship on Sunday with a 14-9 decision over Northwestern's Mike Tamillow, becoming the first Eagles wrestler to capture a championship at the Midlands Tournament, one of the nation's premier wrestling events, held on the campus of Northwestern University.

First-seeded Glenn advanced into Sunday's competition with a first-round bye and a second round tech-fall over Pittsburgh's A.J. Hunt at 4:37. On Sunday, Glenn first defeated Northern Iowa's Andrew Anderson without much resistance, 8-1. In the semi-final round, Glenn faced fourth-seeded T.J. Morrison from Rider and won a tight 2-0 decision.

Second-seeded Tamillow was Glenn's opponent in the championship round. Tamillow had won three matches earlier in the tournament including an 11-2 major decision in his first match and an 8-6 decision against third-seeded Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan in the semis. Glenn would not allow Tamillow many of the scoring opportunities he had earlier in the tournament though and completed his championship run with a 14-9 decision.

Glenn's victory marks the first time that an Eagles wrestler has won a championship at the Midlands. In its 45th year of existence, the Midlands Tournament routinely draws the best competition from around the country and is regarded as one of the most prestigious wrestling events of the year. AU had previously sent five wrestlers to the podium at the Midlands, including two third-place finishes by Glenn in 2005 and 2006, an eighth-place finish by Mike Cannon in '06, a fourth-place showing by Daniel Waters in '04 and an eighth-place finish by Marc Hoffer in '00.

As a team, the Eagles finished in 13th place at the Midlands with 44 points. Iowa won the team championship with 185 points and Iowa State took second with 135 points

American University to Face Duke in NCAA Tournament First-Round Action

The brackets are set and the American University volleyball team is heading to Durham, N.C. to face the Duke Blue Devils in the first-round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament Friday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m.

The Eagles earned their tournament berth with a 3-0 win over Colgate to capture their seventh-consecutive Patriot League Tournament title. AU completed its 2007 campaign with a 26-7 overall record, a 13-1 mark against PL opponents and a 17-1 record at home. American ranks fifth in the NCAA with 2.44 aces per game and 23rd nationally with its .266 team hitting percentage.

Individually the Eagles are led by junior outside hitter Rubena Sukaj. Sukaj earned her second straight PL Player of the Year award this season after ranking second in the nation in kills per game (5.54) and eighth in aces per game (0.68). Sophomore Ivana Cebakova earned her first career major award from the PL as the Co-Defensive Player of the Year averaging 3.66 digs per game. Senior Chelsa Brooks joined Sukaj as a member of this year's All-PL First Team and is the program's all-time leader in block assists, among the top-three in total blocks and will finish her career as an Eagle with a hitting percentage over .300. Junior setter Christina Nash was named the PL Tournament MVP and is currently averaging 10.31 assists per game and has a .393 hitting percentage.

This marks American's ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament under Head Coach Barry Goldberg and is the program's seventh-consecutive trip to the 'Big Dance'. The Eagles have never won an NCAA Tournament match and are 0-8.

American's first-round opponent, Duke, enters the tournament with a 24-6 overall record and finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season standings. The Blue Devils are led by senior setter Ali Hausfeld who broke her own school record for assists in a season (1,594) and senior outside hitter Carrie DeMange who broke the school record for kills in a season (568).

AU and Duke have squared off three times in their history with Duke holding a slight 2-1 advantage. The last meeting between the two, a 3-0 Duke win, was in the first-round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. In 2002, AU won a five game decision at Duke in the Duke Classic. Their first meeting was on opening night of the 1993 season and resulted in a 3-0 Blue Devil victory.

Liberty (27-8) and No. 10 California (22-7) will join American and Duke in Durham for first-round action and will play Friday at 5 p.m. The winner of each match will play Saturday, Dec. 1 at 5 p.m., with the winner of that match advancing to regional action in Madison, Wis., Dec. 7-8.

Happy Thanksgiving From American University Athletics

Dear American Fan,

We at AU Athletics have a lot to be thankful for this holiday. This fall we celebrated three more Patriot League Championships as Field Hockey won their fifth, Men's Cross Country their sixth and Volleyball their seventh consecutive titles. We also climbed to the top of the conference standings in women's soccer, while placing over 50 student-athletes on league, regional and national academic honor rolls. We are just as excited about our winter seasons as men's and women's basketball and wrestling aim to surpass their winning ways of last year.

We are also thankful for the all that AU Athletics represents. Led by our marvelous student-athletes, coaches and administrators there is a true sense of community centered around personal growth, mutual respect and fair play. And beyond our community, our student-athletes continue to represent our fans, friends, alumni and the University with great integrity and class.

Through all of this, we are most thankful for your continued generosity and support. Without you and your fellow loyal donors and friends we would be unable to achieve such comprehensive success.

From our entire family at AU, I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving.

American University Wrestling to Hoist First National Championship Banner Thanks to Generous Alumni Who Saved Program

Four-year letterwinner Alan Meltzer rallied alumni and donors around a program on the verge of being cut

WASHINGTON - On Dec. 8, 2007, American University will hoist its first Wrestling National Championship banner to the rafters of Bender Arena, permanently commemorating the achievements of Josh Glenn and his 2006-07 season. On hand to witness this special occasion will be alumni of the wrestling program who not only paved the way for Glenn as student-athletes but also saved the program from extinction.

Amid budget cuts and financial tightening in 2002, the AU Department of Athletics and Recreation was faced with the harsh realization that the wrestling program may be cut. To save the program, Alan Meltzer, a prominent alumnus and four-year member of the wrestling team, stepped forward and brought together a group of alumni and donors who literally saved the team. Meltzer's group of supporters including Loren Danielson, Jack Haire and Jack Cassell, convinced the university to recommit resources to the program and solidified the team's donor base. With its newfound resources, the AU wrestling team was able to purchase new equipment, improve facilities and travel to more tournaments.

"Alan was a workaholic and an intense, competitive person since the day I met him," former AU Head Coach Dr. Robert Karch said. "He's a legend. He's been very generous to American, not just in money, but in the time and effort he puts in to help many people in many different ways."

The support of Meltzer and others also helped to bring in Head Coach Mark Cody who in his years as an assistant was vital to the success of nationally renowned programs such as Missouri, Oklahoma State and most notably Nebraska, where he spent 12 seasons. Coach Cody has been responsible for rebuilding the AU team from the ground up and in just five season has produced the program's first-ever National Champion, four All-Americans including AU's first wrestling All-American, multiple Academic All-Americans, four EIWA Champions and 11 NCAA Qualifiers.

Two of Coach Cody's recruits have served as the face of AU wrestling during the program's resurgence. Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov, a 2007 graduate, completed his final year of eligibility with the Eagles during the 2005-06 season and became just the second All-American in program history. Abdurakhmanov posted a 27-1 overall record during that season and placed fourth at the NCAA Championships. Abdurakhmanov, a three-time Uzbekistan National Champion, transferred to AU after two seasons at Colby Community College where he won back-to-back National Championships. After exhausting his eligibility, Adburakhmanov returned to AU to finish his degree in Russian last year and joined the team as a student-assistant. This year he will remain with the team as an assistant to Coach Cody.

The other centerpiece to AU wrestling's turnaround has been senior Glenn. A two-time EIWA champion and two-time All-American, Glenn captured AU wrestling's first National Championship last season. Moving up a division to 197 lbs., Glenn tore through his competition en route to a 27-1 overall record. Glenn defeated Kurt Backes of Iowa State in the championship match during sudden-death overtime, 6-4. During his sophomore season, Glenn entered the NCAA Championships ranked No. 1 at 184 lbs. and placed fourth in the tournament, earning his first All-America honor. In just three seasons Glenn has moved into third-place on AU's all-time wins list with 91.

American University Wrestlers Tabed in AWN's Pre-Season Rankings

Josh Glenn headlines the list as the No. 1 wrestler in the 197 pound class

Oct. 2, 2007

WASHINGTON - After completing the program's most successful season to date and crowning their first national champion, the American University wrestling team landed four student-athletes on the Amateur Wrestling News' Pre-Season Rankings, the magazine announced this week. Sophomores Kyle Borshoff (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) and Mike Cannon (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon), junior Rudy Rueda (Waldorf, Md./DeMatha) and senior Josh Glenn (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) were each honored as one of the top-20 athletes in their respective weight classes entering the season.

Borshoff ranks 17th at 141 pounds and posted a 16-15 overall record last year with two major decisions and four falls. He began his freshman campaign by winning three of four matches at the Keystone Classic and also earned decisions against Iowa, Arizona State and Cal-State Fullerton. Borshoff wrestled 11 ranked opponents throughout the year and earned a fall just 22 seconds into the second period against then No. 13 Max Meltzer.

At 165 pounds, Cannon comes into the season ranked fifth. As a freshman, the Maryland native recorded a 29-8 overall record with three major decisions, three falls and a 16-2 dual record. Between January 14 and March 2, Cannon ripped off 10 consecutive wins including a 8-4 decision over then No. 12 Jason Kiessling of Maryland and a 5-3 decision over then No. 15 Andrew Renos of Bucknell. Cannon's season concluded at the NCAA Championships where he earned two wins and two losses.

Rueda ranks 13th among 174 pound wrestlers in the NCAA's Division I. The incoming junior racked up 27 wins last season against 11 losses and earned nine major decisions. Rueda began his season by going 5-0 with two major decisions and a tech fall. Between December 29 and February 17 he recorded a pair of seven-match win streaks and was 14-1 overall during that span. Rueda earned two day-one victories at the NCAA Championships with decisions of 11-5 and 3-1.

Glenn returns this season as the NCAA Champion at 197 pounds and has earned the No. 1 pre-season ranking that accompanies the title. Glenn's season record was nearly unblemished as he went 27-1 en route to AU's first national championship in wrestling. As a junior, he earned nine falls and five major decisions and will enter competition this year with a 24-match win streak. Glenn began the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships with a 14-2 major decision over Andrew Anderson of Northern Iowa and later earned a 3-0 decision over Patrick Bond of Illinois. On the second day, Glenn pinned both of his opponents for the win. Nebraska's Craig Brester went down at 6:36 and Hofstra's Chris Weidman lasted only 4:27. Glenn faced Kurt Backes of Iowa in the championship match. Backes had previously handed Glenn his only loss of the season via fall just 1:58 into the match. The incoming senior would have his revenge though, earning a 6-4 overtime decision and taking home the crown as the country's best wrestler at 197 pounds.

AU will open its season just over a month from now when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Keystone Classic on November 18. The Eagles will compete three times before returning home to Bender Arena on December 2 when they host Lehigh University.

American University Wrestling Chosen 24th in USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Preseason Division I Coaches Poll

The Eagles will head into this season looking to improve upon their 17th place showing at last year's NCAA Championships

WASHINGTON - After crowning its first-ever National Champion and tying the program's best NCAA Championship finish, the American University wrestling team was ranked 24th in the USA Today/NWCA/InterMat Preseason Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll. Also included in the poll released Tuesday were the InterMat/NWMA/NWCA Preseason Division I Wrestling Rankings, previewing each weight class, in which senior Josh Glenn ranked first at 197 lbs. and sophomore Mike Cannon was selected 10th at 165 lbs.

American received 133 points in the poll and finished ahead of Oregon State (115 pts.) and just behind the University of Pennsylvania (144 pts.). The poll is voted on by one representative member of each Division I wrestling conference and one wild card. The Eagles were joined in the preseason rankings by four other EIWA schools including Cornell (9th, 371 pts.), Navy (18th, 268 pts.), Harvard (22nd, 148 pts.) and Penn. Lehigh and Columbia were listed as receiving votes.

Last season AU sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and put one atop the podium in National Champion and unanimous preseason No. 1 Glenn. Cannon, Kyle Borshoff and Rudy Rueda all joined Glenn at the tournament and combined they scored 33 points, placing American 17th and tying the school's best finish at nationals. American had finished sixth at the EIWA Tournament two weeks prior to the NCAA Tournament. Glenn repeated at the conference meet as the 197 lbs. champion and Cannon, Borshoff and Rueda all had podium finishes. Jasen Borshoff and Damian Swietlik each placed at the EIWA Tournament as well.

The individual rankings are voted on by members of the National Wrestling Media Association and featured Glenn as the nation's best 197 lbs. wrestler and put Cannon at No. 10 at 165 lbs. This is the third preseason poll that has included the two Eagles, the others being the Amateur Wrestling News' Pre-Season Rankings where Glenn was selected first and Cannon fifth, and W.I.N. Magazine's Preseason Poll which again chose Glenn No. 1 and Cannon eighth. Teammate K. Borshoff was also included in the Amateur Wrestling News' Pre-Season Rankings, showing up at No. 17 on the list.

Glenn returns this season as the NCAA Champion at 197 lbs. and has earned the No. 1 preseason ranking that accompanies the title.

At 165 lbs., Cannon comes into the season ranked 10th.

Josh Glenn Becomes American University Wrestling's First National Champion

AU junior wins in sudden victory overtime, 6-4 to win 197 lb. title

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Before the NCAA Championships, American University wrestler Josh Glenn said his only goal heading in was to win five more matches. Three days of competition later, Glenn did that and more, becoming AU wrestling's first national champion and AU Athletics' first national champion in more than 40 years with a heart-stopping 6-4 win in overtime over Kurt Backes of Iowa State for the 197 lb. title.

The match itself was as dramatic as any in recent memory as both wrestlers battled through regulation into overtime. It was Glenn on the attack first, scoring a takedown in the opening minute and gaining over a minute of riding time before Backes escaped near the end of the period for a 2-1 lead. Glenn chose down to start the second and popped right up for the 3-1 lead. Late in the period, Backes scored on a reshot to tie the match at three. The Cyclone chose down to start the third and earned the escape for the 4-3 lead though Glenn had locked up a riding time point. Late in the period, it appeared Glenn finished a takedown and was awarded two points when the action was stopped for potentially dangerous. Because Glenn was in the dangerous position, the refs conferred and repealed the takedown, keeping the score at four apiece and pushing the match into overtime. Once there, it did not take long for the AU Eagle to attack, launching a single leg shot into a takedown for the 6-4 win.

Asked about his takedown at the end of regulation that was called back, Glenn answered in his usual calm demeanor, "I knew I was going to win the match no matter what... I didn't care if I got the call or not. I knew I was going to stay aggressive and keep wrestling."

Glenn's win is American's first national championship in any sport since 1966 when diver Ray Crowe won the national title. The victory also makes him the first wrestler from the Washington D.C. area to win a national title since the University of Maryland's Gobel Kline accomplished the feat in 1969.

For the AU junior from Johnson City, N.Y., the victory highlights a year-long road back to NCAA Championships podium after his fourth-place finish in 2006. Glenn became the first AU wrestler to win All-America honors as an underclassman, when he entered last year's tournament as the No. 1 seed at 184 lb. and fell a point short of making the finals.

This season, Glenn has been as dominant as anyone in the country, ending his 27-1 season on a 24 match winning streak. He became American's second two-time EIWA Champion two weeks ago, defeated three All-Americans and won 16 matches by bonus points. In just three years of competition, the double major in law and society and international studies has 91 career wins, which is good for third all-time in program history. Glenn's win was also revenge on Backes who earned the only win over the AU junior this season.

Asked about his junior captain, head coach Mark Cody was effusive in his praise. "Josh does not do anything between two and 99 percent - he gives 100 percent all the time."

The Eagles ended the tournament with 33 points, which put them in 17th place, a tie for a school-best.

American wrestling loses just two athletes to graduation this spring and for the first time ever will return four national qualifiers, including one National Champion.

American University's Josh Glenn and Mike Cannon Advance to EIWA Championship Finals

Six Eagles earn at least top-six placings as the Eagles are in fourth overall

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - American University wrestlers Josh Glenn and Mike Cannon each won dramatic semifinal matches Friday and will wrestle for EIWA Championships in their respective finals Saturday as a school-record six Eagles earned at least top-six placings in the day's second session. In the team standings, AU is in a school-best fourth-place with 61.5 points and tomorrow's finals and place matches remaining.

"In this tournament, a win is a win, whether it's by one point or 10," head coach <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/cody_mark00.html>Mark Cody said. "We'll take the advancement points. We want to do well as a team here, but what we really want is to get as many guys into the NCAA Tournament as possible."

Tough wrestling in the championship and consolation brackets netted American its school-record six wrestlers vying for coveted NCAA berths Saturday.

Glenn battled to a 7-4 win over returning EIWA 197 lb. champion Matt Cassidy of Lehigh. Glenn scored a takedown in the opening 10 seconds of the match and led 3-1 after the first period. The pair started the second neutral and the score remained 3-1 courtesy of numerous tie-ups in the period. Cassidy chose down to begin the third at which point Glenn was hit with a caution point due to numerous warnings, which tightened the score at 3-2. The AU junior stayed aggressive, holding Cassidy down for 30 seconds, but the Mountain Hawks' escape tied the score at three into the final minute. Glenn, however, would not be denied a shot at his third straight EIWA final and second straight title, scoring two takedowns over the final minute to clinch his place opposite Cornell's No. 3-ranked Jerry Rinaldi in the final.

Fellow team captain Cannon defeated Andrew Rendos of Bucknell in the semifinals 5-3 and advanced to the 165 lb. final where he'll face 2006 EIWA runner-up Steve Anceravage of Cornell. The AU redshirt freshman shot out to a 4-1 lead with riding time advantage in the first four minutes of the match by way of two takedowns. Rendos scored a single leg takedown and chipped Cannon's riding time advantage to under a minute with less than a minute remaining. The Bison cut Cannon and Cannon was able to hold off a late takedown attempt and preserve the 5-3 score.

AU wrestled strong in the consolation brackets with four Eagles earning at least a top-six place. At 125 lb. <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/borshoff_jasen00.html>Jasen Borshoff took two victories, defeating Ryan Jablonski of Rutgers by medical forfeit and Greg Hart of Bucknell 11-8. Borshoff is set to face No. 5 seed Brandon Kinney of Columbia tomorrow morning.

True freshman <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/borshoff_kyle00.html>Kyle Borshoff bounced back from his quarterfinal defeat by manhandling his opponents in the consolation brackets. Borshoff scored an easy 10-3 victory over Zachary Galligan of Bucknell and then earned a 19-4 technical fall over Kyle Milanese of Rutgers. He'll match up against Mark Savino of Brown in Session III.

Joining them in the top-six will be senior captain <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/swietlik_damian00.html>Damian Swietlik and sophomore <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/rueda_rudy00.html>Rudy Rueda. Swietlik won by 14-5 major decision over Bryan Tracy of Brown and defeated Jack Barrett of Rutgers 10-9 after leading by five for much of the match. Rueda found the same game plan that saw him win 14 of his previous 15 matches entering the EIWA Tournament. With quick takedowns and tough riding, Rueda won by fall over Fred Rowsey of Harvard and scored a third period 16-1 technical fall over Shane Riccio of Bucknell. He'll face No. 12 Joey Hooker in Session III.

The day also saw the end of the season for <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/fuschino_anthony00.html>Anthony Fuschino, <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/lipp_jordan00.html>Jordan Lipp and <http://aueagles.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/pepper_jimmy00.html>Jimmy Pepper. At 184, Fuschino lost to George Mann 10-4 in the second round of consolations. Lipp, who started the season with a very promising performance at the Keystone Classic was slowed by injuries in the last two months, lost to John Stout of ESU 10-5. At 157, true freshman Pepper lost 10-4 to Drake Hovis of Cornell.

With two sessions to go the Eagles (61.5 points) will look to preserve their fourth-place tomorrow against fifth-place Lehigh (61 points) and sixth-place Columbia (60 points).

American's four consolation wrestlers return to the mats of Koehler Fieldhouse tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. for session three. Glenn and Cannon will return for session four tomorrow night for the Championship finals.

American University Wrestler Mike Cannon Leaps to No. 12 National Ranking
Cannon and No. 4 Josh Glenn headline Eagles in latest NWCA/Intermat Polls
Feb. 21, 2007

WASHINGTON - American University wrestler Mike Cannon continued to earn national recognition Wednesday, improving to a career-best No. 12 national ranking in this week's NWCA/Intermat rankings. Fellow team captain Josh Glenn remained at No. 4 at 197 lb.

Cannon has solidified his No. 12 ranking with strong performances against ranked opponents throughout the year. His team-high 24 wins includes victories over No. 10 Zach Shanaman of Penn at the Keystone Classic and, in dual meets, over No. 13 Patrick Pitsch of ASU and No. 14 Jason Kiessling of Maryland. In the EIWA rankings, Cannon is third behind Shanaman and No. 11 Stephen Anceravage of Cornell.

"Rankings don't mean too much, it's really how you compete," head coach Mark Cody commented. "That said, there's no way Cannon should be ranked behind [Penn's] Shanaman."

Pushing his winning total to 19 and streak to 15 straight, Glenn has maintained his No. 4 ranking for the past three weeks. Of his 19 wins, 12 of them came by bonus point victories. Over his last eight matches, Glenn's opponents, including No. 15 Hudson Taylor of Maryland, have scored just five points on the 2006 All-American. Among EIWA foes, Glenn is ranked second behind No. 3 Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell.

"He's probably more ready at this point of the year than last year," Cody said. "Midlands was basically his first competition. He's 100 percent, he's in great shape and he's physically strong. We're going to work him hard this week and rest him next and see what happens at EIWAs."

Sophomore Rudy Rueda is the sole other Eagle ranked in the latest EIWA poll released Tuesday. At 174, Rueda is fifth with a 22-7 record overall. He has won 12 of his last 13 matches, including a 9-5 decision over No. 13 Mike Letts. Among EIWA competitors, Rueda has only faced top-seeded No. 12 Matt Stolpinski of Navy who he lost to 4-2 in December.

American has nine days until its postseason begins at the EIWA Tournament, Friday March 2 in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

American University Wrestling Loses Tough Matchup with Rutgers, 19-18
Eagles win six matches on day though none by bonus points

Results
WASHINGTON - American University's wrestling team won six matches of ten matches against EIWA foe Rutgers Saturday, but the Scarlet Knights captured three by bonus points including the day's final bout at heavyweight by pin to edge the Eagles 19-18.

There were several exciting matches on the day, but none as nail-biting as the heavyweight matchup between AU's Evan Murtaugh and Rutgers' Mike D'Amico. American led 18-13 into the final match and needed Murtaugh to avoid a pin to secure a tie or win. With the crowd cheering him on, Murtaugh fought his way through two periods, despite giving up almost 80 pounds to his opponent. The AU junior scrambled out of D'Amico's grasp on the mat several times to make the score 12-4 into the last two minutes. Just seconds into the final period, Murtaugh was finally overcome by D'Amico's size as he was thrown to his back on the mat and pinned at 5:19 mark. With the pin, Rutgers took the match 19-18.

American's EIWA ranked wrestlers all won their matches. At 165 Mike Cannon dominated for more than six minutes of his match. Leading 14-2 with 30 seconds to go and looking for the technical fall, Cannon shot from far out and his opponent countered and put him to his back. Cannon avoided the pin, but his opponent scored two takedown points and three nearfall points to make the score 15-8. At 174, Rudy Rueda dominated his opponent with a takedown and three near fall points in the first period on his way to a 7-1 win. At 197, Josh Glenn scored an escape to start the third period for the 1-0 win over RU's Lamar Brown.

American's lightweights also wrestled well. Jasen Borshoff had a clutch performance at 125, scoring a takedown as time ran out after being down 8-7 with 15 seconds left for the 9-8 win. Jordan Lipp and Damian Swietlik also won by decision, but Rutgers countered with wins at 141 by major decision and at 157 by fall to go with a decision win at 184 to give themselves a shot in the heavyweight match.

American is now 8-8 on the season and 2-3 in the EIWA. The Eagles have four days to prepare for their final home match of the season versus Maryland on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.

WASHINGTON - Junior Adam LoPiccolo, a heavyweight wrestler from Glen Rock, Pa., has been released from the men's wrestling program.

American Wrestling Falls to Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 23-17
Eagles win five matches on day

WASHINGTON - Wrestling without the services of starters Kyle Borshoff and Adam LoPiccolo, the American University wrestling team fell 23-17 to University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Sunday afternoon. Each team won five matches, but the visitors took two by pin, which made the difference.

Jasen Borshoff started things right for American with a 6-2 decision win at 125. The Eagles fell behind over the next two matches as Jordan Lipp fell 7-3 at 133 and Nick Pitas - wrestling in place of Borshoff - at 141 was pinned in the first round.

The teams cancelled each other out over the next two matches. At 149, Damian Swietlik dominated the first two periods on his way to a 14-5 major decision. Pitt-Johnstown rebounded with a 14-6 major decision win over Jimmy Pepper to put the match at 13-7.

American won three of the next four matches to bring the match to a 17-all tie. At 165 and 174 respectively, Mike Cannon and Rudy Rueda each won by decision. Following a major decision win by Pitt-Johnstown at 184 over Anthony Fuschino, No.5 Josh Glenn won by major decision 12-3 to tie the match heading into heavyweight.

Without LoPiccolo wrestling, American was forced to mat Evan Murtaugh, regularly a 184 lb. competitor. For the second straight match, Murtaugh went to battle despite giving up almost 100 lb. to his opponent. Unfortunately, the AU grappler lasted 27 seconds before being pinned by Jon Neese. That win gave Pitt-Johnstown, the fifth-ranked team in Division II, the 23-17 victory.
The Eagles, now 8-7 on the season, have a week off before hosting EIWA foe Rutgers in Bender Arena, Sunday Feb. 4 at 12 p.m.
