Cannon Wins 184 lbs. Title at 106th EIWA Championships, American University Wrestling Records Team-Best Fifth-Place Finish
Senior #1 Mike Cannon won his second consecutive EIWA Championship Sunday afternoon to help the American University wrestling team to a program-record fifth-place finish at the 106th EIWA Championships. Cannon was joined in the finals by first-time placewinner #7 Jordan Lipp as a team-record seven Eagles finished on the podium.
- Cannon captured his second 184 lbs. EIWA Championship with a 5-1 decision over second-seeded Louis Caputo of Harvard. Cannon was making his third appearance in the EIWA finals, having also won last year's 184 lbs. title and wrestling for the 165 lbs. crown in 2008. Cannon's championship earns him an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships, joining him with Josh Glenn, '08, as the school's only four-time NCAA qualifiers.
- Lipp made his first appearance in the finals after upsetting both the tournaments second and third seeds at 141 lbs. on Saturday. He faced top-seeded Kyle Drake from Cornell in the championship match where he fell by a score of 9-2. Lipp's second-place finish marked the first time in his career he has placed at the EIWA Championships and has earned the senior his first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
- A total of seven Eagles finished on the podium at the EIWA Championships, surpassing the previous program record of six placewinners set last year. Junior #2 Steve Fittery placed third at 157 lbs. and freshman #5 Daniel Mitchell placed fourth at 197 lbs., earning the pair an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships. American's other placewinners included #2 Kyle Borshoff (5th), #3 Jasen Borshoff (6th) and #7 Thomas Williams (7th).
- With Cannon, Fittery, Lipp and Mitchell all automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships, the Eagles have matched their program record for NCAA qualifiers in a single-season. American sent Glenn, Christopher Stout, '09, Cannon and J. Borshoff to the 2008 NCAA Championships where Glenn and Cannon each earned All-America honors. K. Borshoff, J. Borshoff and Williams can still qualify for Nationals through the NCAA's at-large process. The NCAA has reserved 46 spaces for at-large qualifiers to this year's championship and will announce the recipients of those bids on Wednesday, March 10.
- American finished the team race in fifth place with a total of 96 points, marking the team's best-ever finish at the tournament. The Eagles' previous best finish was sixth place which they had achieved each of the last three years.
125 lbs. - #3 Jasen Borshoff
Borshoff fell behind Harvard's Steven Keith midway through the first period of the consolation semifinals and was unable to mount a comeback. Keith controlled the tempo throughout the match en route to a 9-3 victory. In the fifth-place match, Borshoff was again unnable to get on his offense and dropped a 6-4 decision to fourth-seeded Aaron Kalil from Navy to place sixth.
133 lbs. - #7 Thomas Williams
Williams squared off with Army's Travis Coffey, seeded sixth, in the seventh place match where he was forced to fight back from a 2-1 third-period deficit with Coffey also holding riding time advantage. With less than a minute remaining, Williams reversed Coffey and caught the Black Knight on his back for the pin to place seventh.
141 lbs. - #7 Jordan Lipp
Lipp, making his first EIWA finals appearance, fell to top-seeded Kyle Dake from Cornell, 9-2. Dake scored a takedown and back points in the first period for a 4-0 lead and added to his advantage in the second. Lipp came on strong in the third period, scoring a takedown midway through to close to within 6-2. A Dake takedown at the end of the period, however, closed the door on Lipp's championship bid. Lipp's second place finish marked the first time in his career that he has placed on the podium and has earned the senior his first career appearance at the NCAA Championships.
149 lbs. - #2 Kyle Borshoff
Borshoff took a 2-0 lead over Navy's Glenn Shober, seeded fourth, after scoring the first takedown of the match but could not hold on to his lead as the Midshipmen took a 4-3 advantage into the third period. Borshoff chose to begin down but was unable to escape from Shober who rode out the period for the win. The 2009 All-American returned in the fifth-place match where he caught Columbia's Steve Santos with a takedown and two sets of back points in the first period for a 6-0 lead. He would tack on an escape point in the second period and another takedown in the third. With riding time advantage, Borshoff earned the 9-1 victory for a fifth-place finish.
157 lbs. - #2 Steve Fittery
Fittery scored his first fall of the tournament with a second round pin of fifth-seeded Matt Dragon from Penn. The junior scored the match's first takedown and later used a reversal and three back points to build a 7-2 advantage. He added another set of back points in the second period before pinning Dragon's shoulders to the mat for the victory. In the consolation finals, Fittery picked up an escape point in the second period and rode out Rutgers' Daryl Cocozzo, seeded fourth, in the third period for a 2-1 victory and third place. Fittery has earned his first NCAA Championships appearance as an Eagle after placing second at the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Div. II Championships while wrestling for Shippensburg University.
174 lbs. - #1 Mike Cannon
Cannon won his second consecutive EIWA Championship with a 5-1 decision over Harvard's Louis Caputo, the tournament's second seed. Cannon was solid in the victory, scoring a takedown in the first period jump out on top. He added an escape point and another takedown in the second and third periods to gain the final margin. Cannon is now a four-time EIWA placewinner, a two-time EIWA Champion and one of only two wrestlers in the school's history to qualify for four NCAA Championships.
184 lbs. - #5 Daniel Mitchell
Mitchell earned his first trip to the NCAA Championships with a dramatic victory over seventh seeded Lamar Brown of Rutgers. Mitchell trailed early but worked his way to a one-point lead with an escape and takedown in the third period. A Brown escape tied the score before Mitchell was able to counter a shot and put Brown on his back for the fall. Mitchell returned to the mat in the consolation finals where he lost a 7-2 decision to Army's Richard Starks, who was seeded second. Mitchell's NCAA qualification puts him in an exclusive club at American with Cannon and Glenn as one of only three freshmen to earn a trip to Nationals.

American University Wrestling Hosts Navy Friday in First Home Action of the Season
- The American University wrestling team will host Navy on Friday, January 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the team's first home dual meet of the season. American defeated Navy for the first time in school history last year, 19-17, courtesy of a 5-3 overtime decision earned by #12 Kyle Borshoff. The Eagles are coming off an eighth-place finish at the 47th Annual Midlands Championships where #5 Steve Fittery was crowned Champion of Champions.
- American's eighth-place showing at the Midlands matched the Eagles' best-ever finish at the tournament. A program record three student-athletes finished on the podium, including Fittery who the 157 lbs. title, #4 Mike Cannon who placed second at 184 lbs., and Borshoff who took seventh at 149 lbs. Fittery was the only wrestler out of the EIWA to win an individual title at the event as American finished second among EIWA schools in the team standings.
- Fittery was named the Champion of Champions following the tournament, an honor voted on by all 10 individual champions. Fittery won five matches over the course of the tournament, three by major decision, one by tech-fall and one by fall. He was also named the EIWA Wrestler of the Week, TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week and the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO for his performance.
- Cannon earned his 100th career victory at the Midlands, making him one of only four student-athletes in American history to reach 100 wins. Cannon's career record now stands at 103-17, putting him two wins behind Chris Toth, '90, for third place all-time in school history.
- The Eagles enter Friday's meet with a 2-4 dual meet record, having defeated Michigan and Northern Colorado at the Journeymen / BRUTE Northeast Duals. Freshman Blake Herrin pushed American to a 20-19 victory over the Wolverines, earning a 3-2 decision against Eddie Phillips in the final bout of the dual to steal the victory. American won nine of 10 weight classes against the Bears of Northern Colorado en route to a 40-4 victory.
- American earned its first-ever win over Navy last year in Annapolis, Md., 19-17. The Eagles trailed 14-6 after the first five weight classes but completed the comeback in the final bout as Borshoff defeated then #5 Bryce Saddoris in sudden-victory overtime, 5-3.
- This year's meet should prove to be just as exciting as the two teams will put a combined six student-athletes featured in the InterMat National Rankings on the mat. The featured bout of the night will pit the fifth-ranked Fittery against Saddoris who is currently ranked eighth. Saddoris holds a record of 18-8 this season and was an NCAA All-American and EIWA Champion last year. Friday's dual will be the first of the year for Navy which placed 10th at last week's Southern Scuffle.

American University Wrestling's Fittery Named Champion of Champions at 47th Annual Midlands Championships
-
Steve Fittery was named the Champion of Champions at the 47th Annual Midlands Championships after capturing the 157 lbs. title with a first period fall Wednesday night in Evanston, Ill. Fittery won five matches during the two day tournament, all with bonus points, leading the American University wrestling team to a program-best eighth-place finish. #2 Mike Cannon joined Fittery in the finals but lost his 184 lbs. bout in sudden victory overtime to place second while #3 Kyle Borshoff took seventh at 149 lbs.
- Fittery, the top-seeded wrestler at 157 lbs., dominated over the course of the tournament, picking up three major decisions, one tech-fall and one fall. The junior cruised through the first day of competition with two major decisions before tech-falling Clairon's Hadley Harrison in the second period, 17-1, to advance to the semifinals. Fittery then returned to the mat on Wednesday with a 15-5 major decision over fifth-seeded Keegan Davis from Oregon State to earn himself a place in the finals. In the finals, Fittery made quick work of second-seeded Jake Patacsil from the Boiler Elite Wrestling Club to earn his first Midlands Championship by fall 2:52 into the first period.
- "Steve Fittery is relentless in his attack," Head Coach Mark Cody elated after Fittery's victory. "It doesn't matter who he's wrestling, if he goes out with that same mentality he's going to keep scoring the whole seven minutes and that is why he's successful. We are very proud about what Steve has accomplished here and feel that he is more than capable of having this type success at the NCAA Championships in March."
- At the tournament's conclusion, Fittery was named the Champion of Champions, an honor voted on by all 10 Midlands Champions. Fittery is the first wrestler in American history to be named Champion of Champions and the third to capture a Midlands Championship. He joins current teammate Cannon who won the 2008 title at 174 lbs. and former Eagle Josh Glenn who won the 197 lbs. title in 2007.
- Cannon, looking to win a second straight Midlands title, fell just short of his goal after advancing to the finals. The two-time NCAA All-American earned three major decisions on Tuesday to advance to the 184 lbs. semifinals. He then picked up a 7-1 decision over third-seeded Phillip Keddy from Iowa early on Wednesday to move into the finals. Cannon, wrestling as the second seed, was out in front for nearly the entire match against fifth-seeded John Dergo from Illinois before an illegal hold call late in the third period tied the match at nine. Dergo was then able to score first in sudden victory overtime to capture the title, 11-9, dropping Cannon to second place.
- Cannon, wrestling in his final Midlands Championships, joins Glenn as American's second three-time place-winner at the event. As a freshman in 2006 he placed eighth at 165 lbs. before winning the 174 lbs. title last year.
- Borshoff earned his second straight podium finish at the Midlands with a seventh-place finish at 149 lbs. Borshoff won back-to-back decisions early on Tuesday as the third seed before falling to sixth-seeded Anthony D'Alie, 5-3, in sudden victory overtime to bump him from the championship hunt. The 2009 NCAA All-American returned in the wrestlebacks on Wednesday with a 7-3 decision over Clarion's James Fleming but then lost a second match in sudden victory overtime, this time to seventh-seeded Mitch Mueller from Iowa State. Borshoff went out on a high note though, defeating Michigan State's Dan Cheza, 4-3, to take seventh place.
- Borshoff earned his first Midlands podium finish last year with a fourth-place finish at 149 lbs. Borshoff, Cannon and Glenn are the only wrestlers in American history to place multiple times at the Midlands.
- "This is the first time in our program's history that we've had two Midlands finalists and three place-winners," Cody commented. "This is a big step forward for us. I realized this weekend that we have a lot we still need to work on but that is the beauty of this tournament. Our goal now is to turn those weaknesses into strengths and to make our strengths even stronger. I'm proud of our entire team for their performance this week but I am particularly proud of Steve, Mike and Kyle."
- As a team, the Eagles finished in eighth place with a total of 65.0 points, matching the program's best-ever finish at the event. American also placed eighth at last year's tournament. For the first time in school history, American had two student-athletes competing in the finals and placed three on the podium.
- The Eagles will return to action Friday, January 8, as they open the home portion of their schedule with a dual meet against Navy at 7:00 p.m. in Bender Arena.

American University's #3 Kyle Borshoff, #4 Mike Cannon and #15 Steve Fittery Perfect at Northeast Duals
American University Wrestling Post 2-1 Record
- #3 Kyle Borshoff, #4 Mike Cannon and #15 Steve Fittery each went a perfect 3-0 on Saturday to lead the American University wrestling team to a 2-1 record at the 2009 Journeymen / BRUTE Northeast Duals. K. Borshoff and Fittery won two bouts with bonus points while Cannon recorded bonus points in all three of his victories.
- American opened the Northeast Duals with a loss to #10 Central Michigan in the first round. The Chippewas won each of the first three weight classes before K. Borshoff took an 8-2 decision over #14 Tony D'Alie at 149 lbs. to close the team scores to 10-3. Fittery followed Borshoff with an 8-4 decision over #7 Steve Brown at 157 lbs. to move the score to 10-6 but victories at the next two weight classes extended Central Michigan's lead to 19-6. Cannon pinned Raylen Davis just 1:51 into the first round at 184 lbs., bringing the team score to 19-12. The Chippewas, however, took the final two bouts to earn the 29-12 victory.
- The Eagles rebounded with a 20-19 win over Michigan in the second round. #18 Jasen Borshoff began the dual with a 5-3 decision at 125 lbs. to put American ahead before consecutive wins gave the Wolverines a 6-3 advantage. K. Borshoff regained the lead for American with a 10-2 major decision over Mark Beaudry, 7-6, and a second period fall by Fittery over Dave Johnson extended the margin to 13-6. Back-to-back wins gave Michigan the lead right back, 14-13, until a 10-2 major decision by Cannon over Hunter Collins gave the Eagles a 17-14 margin. A tech-fall at 197 lbs. gave Michigan the lead once again, 19-17, setting up the heavyweight bout which would decide the outcome. Freshman Blake Herrin proved to be up to the task and earned a 3-2 decision over Eddie Phillips to give American the win, 20-19.
- American dominated its final dual of the day, defeating Northern Colorado, 40-4. J. Borshoff opened the dual with a 4-2 decision over #15 Tony Mustari and a forfeit at 133 lbs. allowed the Eagles to take a 9-0 lead. A major decision at 141 lbs. cut Northern Colorado's deficit to 9-4 but that would be as close as the Bears would get. K. Borshoff extended American's advantage to 14-4 with a 15-0 tech-fall over Justin Gonzales. Fittery followed that up with a 17-2 tech-fall of his own and after a 9-5 decision by Tanner Shaffer over Tanner Weiks at 165 lbs. American led by a score of 22-4. Phillip Barreiro earned a 5-2 decision at 174 lbs., pushing the lead to 25-4. Cannon earned a fall over Eric Brennan, his second of the day, only 28 seconds into the match but would be outdone by Kenneth Clessas at 197 lbs. as he earned a fall just 20 seconds in over Ed Matthews. Mingo Grant closed out the day for American with a 5-4 decision over Justin Tuell at heavyweight, earning American its final margin of 40-4.
- Cannon is now 7-0 on the year and is one win shy of 100 for his career. His career record of 99-16 places him fourth all-time at American. K. Borshoff improved to 6-0 with his three victories while Fittery moved his record to an impressive 13-1. J. Borshoff is 9-1 on the young season.
- American will return to action December 29-30 at the 2009 Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. The Eagles placed eighth at last year's tournament, marking the program's highest-ever finish at the tournament. Cannon won an individual title at 174 lbs. and was joined on the podium by K. Borshoff who placed sixth at 149 lbs.
American University's Borshoff Earns 3-2 Decision at 2009 NWCA All-Star Classic
#4 Kyle Borshoff earned a thrilling 3-2 victory over #3 Lance Palmer from Ohio State on Sunday at the 44th annual NWCA All-Star Classic in Fullerton, Calif. Borshoff is the first Amreican University student-athlete to represent the school at the exhibition event, which annually pits two of the nation's top wrestlers in each weight class against one another.
- Borshoff, a 2009 All-American, took a 0-0 tie into the second period against three-time All-American Palmer. In the second, Palmer earned an escape point to take a 1-0 lead which held throughout the remainder of the period. Borshoff quickly evened the score at one with an escape to begin the third period and then took a 3-1 lead scoring the match's only takedown. Palmer scored an escape late in the period to move the score to 3-2 but was unable to penetrate Borshoff's defense as time expired.
- Borshoff began his season last week at the ACC Challenge where he posted a perfect 3-0 record. Sunday's win over Palmer will not count towards his overall record, however, as the All-Star Classic is considered an exhibition.
- While Borshoff is the first Eagle to represent American in the All-Star Classic's main event, he is the second Eagle to take part in the festivities. Marc Hoffer, American's all-time leader in wins, competed at the 2001 All-Star Classic in an exhibition bout at 149 lbs. and defeated Hofstra's Eric Schmiesing, 6-4.

- Wrestling Crowns Three Champions, Places Second at Keystone Classic
- The American University wrestling team claimed three individual titles and placed eight student-athletes on the podium en route to a second place team finish at the 2009 Keystone Classic on Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa. #4 Mike Cannon won his fourth consecutive Keystone title while #17 Steve Fittery and #18 Jasen Borshoff claimed their first.
- Cannon cruised through the field at 184 lbs. to earn his fourth Keystone Classic Championship. As the tournament's top seed, Cannon defeated Penn's Harrison Cook in his first match of the day with a fall just 1:25 into the first period and returned to defeat fourth-seeded Diego Bencomo of Duke by major decision, 10-1. Cannon defeated sixth-seeded Bran Crudden of Brown in the finals by major decision, 9-0. Cannon's title run improves his record to 4-0 this season. The two-time All-American claimed Keystone Classic titles in 2006 and 2007 at 165 lbs. and last season won the tournament at 174 lbs.
- Fittery was even more impressive as the top seed at 157 lbs., earning two technical falls and a major decision en route to the individual title. Fittery first defeated VMI's Matthew Brock with a third period tech-fall, 23-5. The junior earned another third period tech fall in his second match, 17-1, over fourth-seeded Ben Mandelbrant from Boston and then in the final defeated Liberty's Shaun Smith, the tournament's third seed, by major decision 18-5. Fittery is now 5-1 on the young season.
- Borshoff won four matches on Sunday to claim his first Keystone title. In the semis, Borshoff won a close 3-2 decision over fourth-seeded Fred Santaite of Boston. Borshoff then defeated second seed Garrett Frey of Princeton, 5-3, in the final. Borshoff's title improves his season record to 7-0.

Lipp won three matches, one by fall and one by tech-fall, to make the finals but was defeated by Penn's Zack Kemmerer, the top seed, 5-4 in the championship match.
- Herrin, who wrestled unattached, surprised the field by being the only unseeded wrestler at the tournament to make the final. Herrin upset third seeded Tyler Blakely of Penn in the first round with a 9-4 decision and then earned decisions over two unseeded wrestlers to advance to the championship match. The freshman was met by top seed and national #1 Konrad Dudziak from Duke in the final, where he lost an 8-1 decision.
- Fourth-seeded Mingo Grant placed third at heavyweight. Grant took a 3-1 decision in the first round before being beaten by Dudziak in the semis. Grant later took a 12-6 decision in his first wrestleback match before defeating Appalachian State's Ken Altarac in the third-place match, 5-3.
- Also taking third on Sunday was Thomas Williams at 133 lbs. Williams, the third seed, was upset by sixth-seeded Cortland Choate from Brown in his first match but returned in the wrestlebacks to win four matches, including a tech-fall and major decision. Williams earned a 16-0 tech-fall over VMI's Luke Todd in the second round of wrestlebacks before defeating Choate by major decision in a rematch, 15-2, in the third-place match.
- Tanner Shaffer also earned a podium finish on Sunday, taking sixth place at 165 lbs. Shaffer entered the day as the sixth seed and was defeated by second seed Gabriel Burak of Penn in the first round. Shaffer won his first two wrestleback matches by decision before losing a close 5-4 decision to fourth seeded C.J. Inglin from Boston and a 6-5 decision to Princeton's Andy Lowy.
- American finished second in the overall team standings, marking American's best-ever finish in the tournament. American recorded 110.5 team points but was edged by Liberty University's 128.0 points. American's eighth placewinners were second most behind Liberty's 10.
- The Eagles will return to action this Saturday, November 28, at the 2009 Journeymen/Brute Northeast Duals.

- The #16 American University wrestling team opened its 2009-10 season on Sunday at the ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Eagles went 0-3 on the day, falling to Virginia Tech, North Carolina and #20 Virginia, despite strong showings by several individuals. #4 Kyle Borshoff and Jasen Borshoff each went 3-0 while Steve Fittery and Mingo Grant went 2-1.
- American dropped its first dual to Virginia Tech, 21-13, despite holding a 10-7 lead after the first five weight classes. J. A forfeit at 184 lbs. evened the score at 16 before a major decision at 197 lbs. put Virginia over the top, 20-16. Grant earned a 6-4 decision at heavyweight to close out the day, but it was not enough to match Virginia in the team scores, as the Cavaliers took the win, 20-19.

Champions of the Classroom: AU wrestling achieves highest GPA in Div. I for second straight year
-
- For the second year in a row, the American University wrestling team has attained the highest GPA of all Div. I wrestling programs and has been crowned the National Wrestling Association's Champions of the Classroom. Additionally, senior Andrew Silber and junior Mike Cannon were named to the All-Academic Team.
- American achieved a combined GPA of 3.28, besting Harvard, Stanford, Duke and Davidson, which finished two through five in the rankings, respectively. This year's honor is the second consecutive for Head Coach
Mark Cody's team after tying with Duke last season atop the academic leaderboard. AU is the only school to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors and finish in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships in each of the last four years.
- "We are very proud in our team's ability to maintain such a high level of excellence both in the classroom and on the mat," Cody remarked. "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication that our student-athletes put into their studies and the sport year-round."
- Silber and Cannon, who were each named to the NWCA's All-Academic Team, pick up the program's 10th and 11th Academic All-America honors in the last five years. Cannon, AU's only three-time Academic All-American, is a student in the Kogod School of Business specializing in accounting and holds a 3.31 GPA. Silber, who has picked up his first honor, is a student in the School of Public affairs and holds a 3.27 GPA in justice, law and society.
- The NWCA's team rankings are based on the average GPA of 12 student-athletes from each team, including the 10 who competed at their conference qualifier. For individuals to earn Academic All-America status, they must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule, or been an NCAA All-American with at least a 3.0 GPA.
