- The #16 American University wrestling team opened its 2009-10 season on Sunday at the ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Eagles went 0-3 on the day, falling to Virginia Tech, North Carolina and #20 Virginia, despite strong showings by several individuals. #4 Kyle Borshoff and Jasen Borshoff each went 3-0 while Steve Fittery and Mingo Grant went 2-1.
- American dropped its first dual to Virginia Tech, 21-13, despite holding a 10-7 lead after the first five weight classes. J. Fittery gave the Eagles their 10-7 advantage with a 15-6 major decision at 157 lbs. before losses at 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. put American in a 14-10 hole. #4 Mike Cannon brought the score to 14-13 with a 7-2 decision at 184 lbs. but American would get no closer in the team race as Virginia won at both 197 lbs. and heavyweight to earn the 21-13 victory.
- American fell to North Carolina, 26-9, as J. Borshoff, K. Borshoff and Grant were the only Eagles to earn victories against the Tar Heels.
- The Eagles best showing of the day came against their best competition in #20 Virginia. American opened the dual with victories in the first five weight classes, including a Fittery major decision which gave the Eagles a 16-0 advantage. The Cavaliers rebounded with a major decision of their own at 165 lbs. and a fall at 174 lbs. to cut their deficit to 16-10. A forfeit at 184 lbs. evened the score at 16 before a major decision at 197 lbs. put Virginia over the top, 20-16. Grant earned a 6-4 decision at heavyweight to close out the day, but it was not enough to match Virginia in the team scores, as the Cavaliers took the win, 20-19.
- K. Borshoff earned three decisions to go 3-0 on the day, including a 6-3 decision over #15 Pete Yates of Virginia Tech. J. Borshoff likewise went a perfect 3-0 with three decisions, two of which came by a single point. Fittery went 2-1 with major decisions over #15 Jeff Dong of Virginia Tech and Don Gonsor of UVA while Grant went 2-1 with two decisions.

American University's No. 4 Kyle Borshoff Selected to Participate in NWCA All-Star Classic
- No. 4 Kyle Borshoff has been selected to participate in the 44th annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic on Sunday, November 22, in Fullerton, Calif. Borshoff, a 2009 NCAA All-American, will be the first student-athlete in American history to participate in the event.
- The NWCA All-Star Classic annually pits two of the top wrestlers in each weight class against one another in a showcase exhibition. Borshoff will face No. 2 Lance Palmer at 149 lbs., a three-time All-American.
- Borshoff enters this season ranked fourth in the InterMat Preseason Poll and fifth in the W.I.N Magazine, WrestlingReport.com and D1CollegeWrestling.net Preseason Polls. Last season, Borshoff earned his first All-America honor after finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships. At the tournament, he compiled a record of 5-2 with two wins coming by bonus points. Overall, he completed his year with a record of 33-7, including a 16-1 mark in dual meets, and led the team in falls (6) and victories (33). Borshoff also placed third at last season's EIWA Championships, fourth at the Midlands Championship and took second at the Keystone Classic.
- A two-time NCAA Qualifier, Borshoff has placed three times at the EIWA Championships and Keystone Classic and fell one victory shy of the podium at the Midlands as a freshman. His career record of 73-31 places him 11th all-time at American.
- "We are very excited that Kyle was chosen to compete in this very prestigious event," Head Coach Mark Cody commented. "Kyle has worked very hard over the past three seasons to get to this point in his career and his selection is a testament to that hard work. We believe that Kyle will proudly represent our program and will have an outstanding senior season."
- The Eagles have been tabbed as the No. 16 team in the country by both InterMat and WrestlingReport.com based on projected NCAA Tournament finishes. American will open its 2009-10 season on Sunday, November 15, at the ACC Challenge and will also compete at the Keystone Classic, Northeast Duals and Midlands Championships during the early portion of its schedule. The team will open its home slate on Friday, January 8, against Navy and will also host Duke (Jan. 23), Ohio (Jan. 24), Drexel (Jan. 26) and Rutgers (Feb. 13) in Bender Arena this season.

Champions of the Classroom: AU wrestling achieves highest GPA in Div. I for second straight year
-
- For the second year in a row, the American University wrestling team has attained the highest GPA of all Div. I wrestling programs and has been crowned the National Wrestling Association's Champions of the Classroom. Additionally, senior Andrew Silber and junior Mike Cannon were named to the All-Academic Team.
- American achieved a combined GPA of 3.28, besting Harvard, Stanford, Duke and Davidson, which finished two through five in the rankings, respectively. This year's honor is the second consecutive for Head Coach
Mark Cody's team after tying with Duke last season atop the academic leaderboard. AU is the only school to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors and finish in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships in each of the last four years.
- "We are very proud in our team's ability to maintain such a high level of excellence both in the classroom and on the mat," Cody remarked. "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication that our student-athletes put into their studies and the sport year-round."
- Silber and Cannon, who were each named to the NWCA's All-Academic Team, pick up the program's 10th and 11th Academic All-America honors in the last five years. Cannon, AU's only three-time Academic All-American, is a student in the Kogod School of Business specializing in accounting and holds a 3.31 GPA. Silber, who has picked up his first honor, is a student in the School of Public affairs and holds a 3.27 GPA in justice, law and society.
- The NWCA's team rankings are based on the average GPA of 12 student-athletes from each team, including the 10 who competed at their conference qualifier. For individuals to earn Academic All-America status, they must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule, or been an NCAA All-American with at least a 3.0 GPA.
