Video: #8 American University Wrestling Ready for Wrestle-Offs Sunday Afternoon
- Full release as well as Coach Moore's video: http://aueagles.com/sports/m-wrestl/2011-12/releases/20111019
- The eighth-ranked American University wrestling team will unofficially get its 2011-12 season underway with a intrasquad wrestle-off competition this Sunday, October 23 at 5:30 p.m. at Landon School in Bethesda, Md. There will be 10 matchups on the afternoon as Head Coach Teague Moore begins to determine his starting lineup for the upcoming season. Admission is free for all.
- The following are the 10 matchups, which will take place in this order. Moore shares this thoughts about each bout in this preview:
- Thomas Williams (Senior, 125) vs. Chris Brienza (RS Freshman, 125)
Williams posted a 14-12 record last season, including three falls, two major decisions and one tech-fall. Brienza participated in open competition throughout the season, recording a 4-8 record on the campaign. "Thomas and Chris were both with the program last season and we look for an exciting match with lots of scramble positions and plenty of points," remarked Moore.
- Glenn Donatelli (RS Junior, 133) vs. Corey Borshoff (RS Junior, 125)
Donatelli recorded an 8-12 record a season ago with two falls and one major decision. Borshoff picked up 12 victories in 22 overall matches, which included three falls, one tech-fall and one major decision. "Glenn and Corey will fight for the 133 starting position as both wrestlers look to break into the starting lineup for the first time this season," said Moore.
- Matt Mariacher (RS Senior, 141) vs. Udit Thakur (RS Sophomore, 133)
An EIWA Champion, NCAA qualifier, and NWCA Academic All-American a year ago, Mariacher finished the season with a 33-9 record with eight major decisions. Thakur went 5-8 last year with one fall and one major decision. "Matt is currently ranked ninth in the country and his senior year should be filled with a lot of great action," Moore commented. "This match against Udit should be enjoyable for wrestling fans."Kevin Tao (Junior, 141) vs.Tanner Shaffer (RS Junior, 149)
Tao picked up 18 victories a season ago in 33 overall appearances, including two falls and three major decisions. Shaffer was 10-16 last year, earning three major decisions. "These wrestlers are meeting in the middle from two drastically different 2011 wrestling seasons," said Moore. "Kevin is moving up from 133 while Tanner is coming down from competition at 174 as a fill in. It will be action packed because both of these wrestlers are offense oriented."
- Ganbayar Sanjaa (RS Senior 157) vs. Assistant Coach Kyle Borshoff
Sanjaa, a 2011 All-American, posted a 26-8 record last season with two tech-falls and six falls. He was also a NWCA Academic All-American. "Ganbayar is current a top contender at 157 lbs," Moore commented. "Assistant Coach Kyle Borshoff will step in to help fill the bout card and take on Ganbayar, which will without a doubt be a technical chess match."Mark Cirello (RS Freshman, 157) vs. Sean McCarty (RS Junior, 157)
Cirello was an even 5-5 last year in open competition with two falls and three major decisions. McCarthy was 7-8 last year including two tech-falls and one major decision. "Mark and Sean are looking to secure starting positions and help make complete the solid lineup for us this season," remarked Moore. "These student-athletes have worked hard over the summer to build themselves into 165 lbs wrestlers. This matchup will show the passion and sacrifice both have made to find success and a spot in the starting lineup."Phillip Barreiro (RS Junior, 174) vs. Undergraduate Student Assistant Coach Steve Fittery
Barreiro won six of his 20 overall matches last year, which included a fall. "All-American Steve Fittery will help battle Phillip as he prepares for another season as the starter at 174 lbs," said Moore. "Phillip and his brother Thomas have made the full commitment to training year round here at American."Thomas Barreiro (RS Junior, 184) vs. Assistant Coach Pete Friedl
Barreiro was 9-25 a season ago, which included two major decisions. "Thomas takes on Assistant Coach Pete Friedl as he prepares for another season at the 184 starter," said Moore. "Pete was a three-time All-American for Illinois at this weight so Thomas will get a good measurement of his current ability and where he can improve from here."Ryan Flores (RS Senior, HWT) vs. Blake Herrin (RS Sophomore, HWT)
The national runner-up and an All-American, Flores posted a 26-6 record last season with 10 falls, two tech-falls and three major decisions. He was also the EIWA Champion and a NWCA Academic All-American last season. Herrin finished last season with a 17-5 mark in open competition with four major decisions and one fall. "Ryan comes in as the No. 2 ranked HWT in the country but Blake has learned well from his time in the room with Ryan," stated Moore. "Both wrestlers are arguably top HWT's in the country. It's great for American fans to know that we have great talent at this weight for the 2012 and the seasons to follow."Thomas Williams (Senior, 125) vs. David Terao (Freshman, 125)
Williams will compete for a second time on the afternoon against Terao, a freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii. "Thomas will get a second match vs redshirt freshman David Terao," said Moore. "David was second at the prestigious Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D. this summer. As most light weight matches go, this bout should keep the scoreboard changing and wrestling fans smiling!"

- Moore sent eight student-athletes to the NCAA Division I Championships in five years at Clarion and this season was one win shy of crowning the program's first All-American since 2005.
Sophomore James Fleming won the 157 lbs. title at the EWL Championships and was named the Outstanding Wrestler, marking Clarion's first EWL Champion since 2005 and first "OW" since 1980. Moore's squad also boasted this year's PSAC "OW" in 197 lbs. sophomore Alex Thomas and three PSAC Champions.
- Moore inherits a team coming off a program record fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. American return two All-American's in national runner-up Ryan Flores and fourth-place finisher Ganbayar Sanjaa, two EIWA Champions in Flores and Matt Mariacher and nine of 10 starters from a team which won a program record 14 dual meets in 2010-11. Moore replaces Mark Cody, who after nine seasons at American, was named the head coach at Oklahoma.
- "I am grateful to the American University Athletics Department for their support and confidence with this decision," commented Moore. "AU's wrestling program has proven to be a strong national contender with a very successful record in academics. Both of those elements have been the key to my approach and focus. I'm eager to continue building upon the recent successes of the American program."
- Moore was a four-year starter at Oklahoma State under Head Coach John Smith, winning the 1998 118 lbs. NCAA Championship with a pin of Michigan State's Dave Morgan in the finals. A three-time All-American, he also placed third in 1999, fourth in 1997 and qualified for Nationals as a freshman. Moore was a two-time BIG XII Champion and runner-up as a senior, and currently ranks 18th in Cowboy history with a career record of 118-25.
- Moore continued his wrestling career at the international level following his graduation from Oklahoma State, placing third at the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and winning the 2000 University World Freestyle Championship and 2002 U.S. Open National Championship. He was a three-time member of the National Team, earning a silver medal at the 2003 World Cup and placing second at the 2002 World Team Trials. He also took third place at the 2003 World Team Trials, 2003 U.S. Open National Championships and 2004 U.S. Open National Championships.
- Prior to being named head coach at Clarion, Moore spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant at Harvard. In 2003-04 he was the director of film and facilities for the Oklahoma State program which won the 2004 NCAA Team Championship, BIG XII Championship and National Duals Championship. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, helping the Sooners to a third-place finish at the 2003 NCAA Championships, after beginning his career as an assistant at Pittsburgh.
- Moore was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008. Wrestling for North Allegheny High School he was a three-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association placewinner and 1995 State Champion. He was also a three-time Pennsylvania State Freestyle Champion, three-time Junior National Freestyle Champion and National High School Champion in 1995.
- Moore is a 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State. He and his wife, Mary Alice, have three daughters and one son.
- American University is located in Washington, D.C., at the top of Embassy Row. Mark Cody Pushes American University Wrestling Into National Spotlight
When junior Ryan Flores first met American University's Mark Cody, the wrestling coach took his hand and leaned in close.
- "Son, you're the best heavyweight in the country," Cody said. "You just don't know it yet."
- Last weekend, Flores stood on the podium of the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia with a second-place trophy in his hand. He became just the second student-athlete in program history to reach the finals and helped American to fifth place in the team standings, the best finish in school history.
- "I'm happy because we're moving in the right direction," Cody explained. "The longer I coach the more I realize how hard it is to get someone on the podium, and to have three All-Americans definitely gives us a lot to build on for the future of the program."
- Cody considers his three sons, George, Charlie and Henry, to be his greatest accomplishment, but being named 2011 NWCA Coach of the Year is nice too. His team sent a program-record six wrestlers to Nationals after crowning three EIWA champions two weeks before. Three grapplers achieved All-America status as the Eagles won 14 duals this season, both program highs.
- "Being named the NWCA Coach of the Year is an incredible honor," Cody commented. "It's definitely something I am very proud of. But what I am most proud of is the work that everyone of our student-athletes puts in each day, not only to be the best wrestler they can be but to be the best student-athlete they can be."
- Nine seasons have passed since Cody set up shop in the Marilyn Meltzer Wrestling Room. Since then American has begun a steady climb in the wrestling world and is now one of the elite programs in the nation, boasting 14 All-Americans in the last seven years. While each of these wrestlers has had a unique style and personality, they share one thing in common: the unwavering confidence and support of Coach Cody.
- "The progression was really just believing what Cody was telling me," Flores said after defeating Jarod Trice to advance to the championship match. "It's about being the best all the time in every position."
- Fellow All-American Steve Fittery is also a testament to Cody's coaching ability. After spending two years at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, Fittery transferred to American and compiled a career record of 67-5. He placed third at the NCAA Tournament and lost only one match his senior season.
- ""Mark Cody is the most respected head wrestling coach in the country," Fittery commented. "Ever since I came here two years ago, I've been telling everyone that Mark Cody is the best coach I've ever had. The most impressive thing about coach is that, even though he teaches us how to have success on the mat, he stresses the importance of doing your best in every aspect of life. He's a great coach but even a better person.""
v
- This year's team was also built upon the success of juniors Matt Mariacher and Ganbayar Sanjaa. After taking a redshirt year last season, Mariacher returned to the mat and spent most of this year ranked in the Intermat Top 20 at 141 lbs. He was one of three Eagles to win an EIWA Championship and was one win away from earning All-America status at the NCAA Championships. Sanjaa, meanwhile, placed fourth at the national tournament in his first year with the team. Originally from Mongolia, Sanjaa won a junior college national championship at Colby Community College before coming to American.
- Fittery, Mariacher and Sanjaa are all examples of Cody's ability to maximize talent by building confidence. Two are All-Americans and the third is a conference champion, yet none of these three student-athletes were heavily recruited coming out of high school; this theme holds true for many of the most successful wrestlers in American history.Daniel Waters '05, the program's first All-American, was an ex-Navy Seal who transferred to American after two years at Penn State. Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov '06 spent two years at Colby Community College but became both an All-American and Academic All-American as a senior. Even 2007 National Champion Josh Glenn '08 was not heavily recruited out of high school.
v
- "Getting to where I want to be has never been a matter of how talented I am," stated Mariacher. "It has always been about how much I've bought into what Coach Cody was telling us and how often I do what he tells me to do."
- These successes are the result of a program that asks student-athletes to give 100 percent at whatever they're doing at the time. Whether they're on the mat, in the classroom or having fun with friends, Coach Cody asks that his team give its all in all aspects of life.
- "At American, we make good decisions all the time," Flores explained. "We always live like champions, and that's what makes this the best situation for me."
- With a fifth place finish at this year's NCAA National Championships, the American University wrestling program has established itself among the national powers. This season was a culmination of years of continual growth and development, and now Coach Cody's squad deserves to be included among the nation's best.
- "Respect for a program takes a long time to build," Cody said. "I'm definitely not satisfied, and I won't be until we win a national championship - or three or four."
American University Wrestling's Flores Falls in NCAA Finals, Eagles Place 5th
- No. 3 Ryan Flores became American University wrestling's second NCAA Finalist when he took to the mat Saturday night at the 2011 NCAA Championships but came up just short in his championship bid, falling 2-1 to No. 1 Zach Rey of Lehigh at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
- Led by Flores and fellow All-Americans No. 2 Steve Fittery and No. 8 Ganbayar Sanjaa, the Eagles set a new program record with a fifth-place finish in the team standings. American earned a total of 65 points, just 5.5 points shy of Oklahoma State for fourth. Penn State won the team title while Cornell and Iowa finished second and third, respectively.
- Head Coach Mark Cody was honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association following the tournament, being named the 2011 National Coach of the Year. Along with earning the program's highest finish at the event, the Eagles also matched their program record with three All-Americans and set another program-best with six qualifiers.
- Flores and Rey took a 0-0 tie into the second period where Rey got the upper hand with an escape for a 1-0 lead. Trailing by the same margin in the third period, Flores nearly went on top with a reversal but a stalemate was called with just 17 seconds remaining. Rey cut Flores on the ensuing restart and avoided a late takedown, taking the title with riding time advantage 2-1.
- Flores's appearance in the finals was just the second in program history following Josh Glenn's 197 lbs. National Championship in 2007. This was Flores' third appearance at Nationals and first-ever All-America honor. He finished the season with a 26-6 record including 10 falls, two tech-falls, and three major decisions.
- Fittery and Sanjaa closed out their run at the NCAA Championships earlier in the day by placing third and fourth, respectively. Fittery is now a two-time All-American and one of only four Eagles to earn multiple AA honors while Sanjaa finished on the podium in his first appearance at the event.
- Fittery's career at American comes to a close with an overall record of 67-5, including 54 wins with bonus points. He ranks first in school history with 13 career tech-falls, second with 19 major decisions and is third with 22 falls, all accomplished while wrestling only two seasons at the school. Sanjaa, meanwhile, finished his first year at American with 26-8 record.
- This marks the second straight year the Eagles have placed three on the podium and ties the team for the sixth most AA honors at this year's tournament. The Cody led Eagles have earned multiple AA honors in each of the last four years and boast 14 All-American's since 2005.

149 - #8 Ganbayar Sanjaa
Sanjaa came out quickly in his consolation semifinal bout against 11th-seeded Andrew Nadhir of Northwestern, using a throw to take Nadhir down moments into the match. Sanjaa added two back points before the period was out and carried a 4-0 lead into the third. An escape by Nadhir moved the score to 4-1, but with riding time advantage Sanjaa pulled out the 5-1 decision. In the consolation finals versus Boise State's Jason Chamberlain, the sixth seed, Sanjaa dropped a 3-0 decision to finish his tounament in fourth place. The junior posted a record of 4-2 in his first appearance at Nationals, recording one fall en route to the first All-America honor of his career.
157 - #2 Steve Fittery
Fittery faced top-seeded Adam Hall of Boise State in his consolation semifinal match and avenged his loss to the Bronco from last year's tournament. The two went scoreless into the second period where Fittery took a 1-0 advantage with an escape. Fittery began the third on top and rode Hall out for the entire period, adding a three-point near fall as time wound down for a 5-0 victory. Fittery was even more impressive in the consolation finals, opening the same 5-0 margin in the first period over Iowa's Derek St. John, the sixth seed, with a takedown and near fall. He added an escape and takedown in the second for an 8-0 advantage and finished the match off with two more takedowns and riding time advantage for an 13-1 major decision. Fittery closed out his second appearance at Nationals with a 5-1 record, including one fall, two tech-falls and two major decisions to become an All-American for the second time in his career.
HWT - #3 Ryan Flores
Flores became just the second Eagle in program history to appear in the finals of the NCAA Championships but came up just short in his title bid, falling 2-1 to No. 1 Zach Rey of Lehigh. Flores and Rey took a 0-0 tie into the second period where Rey got the upper hand with an escape for a 1-0 lead. Trailing by the same margin in the third period, Flores nearly went on top with a reversal but the official whistled for a stalemate with just 17 seconds remaining after the junior was unable to gain control. Rey cut Flores on the ensuing restart and avoided a late takedown, taking the title with riding time advantage 2-1. The junior finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, including one fall and one major decision, earning All-America for the first time in his career.
#8 American University Wrestling Posts School Record 14th Win on Senior Night
On the night American University honored the career of top-ranked Steve Fittery in his last home dual meet, the No. 8 wrestling team earned a 25-14 victory over Bucknell to set a new program record for most wins in a season. The Eagles wrapped up the dual meet portion of their schedule with a 14-7 overall mark and 3-2 in the EIWA, surpassing the previous record of 13 wins set in 2005-06.
- American got off to a good start as Thomas Williams picked up a 4-2 decision over Derek Reber at 125 lbs. The two went scoreless into the second period where Reber took the first lead with an escape. Williams came back to score a takedown before the period expired and then added two more points with a reversal in the third for a 4-1 lead. Reber would pull to within 4-2 with an escape but would get no closer as Williams took the victory.
- Bucknell bounced back with a technical fall by Alex Pellicciotti over Kevin Tao at 133 lbs., giving the Bison their only lead of the night 5-3. 14th-ranked Matt Mariacher got the Eagles back on track with a fall at 141 lbs., pinning Adam Healey to the matt just 1:57 into their bout for a 9-5 American advantage.
- The Bison would score another win at 149 lbs. as No. 4 Kevin LeValley earned a 9-6 decision over No. 8 Ganbayar Sanjaa. Sanjaa held an early 4-0 lead after a takedown and two back points in the first but LeValley would go on top 7-4 in the second with an escape, takedown and two sets of back points. Sanjaa scored another takedown late in the third to pull to within 7-6, but after cutting LeValley the Bison would score the final takedown for the 9-6 margin.
- Fittery put American in front 13-8 with an 18-7 major decision over Brantley Hooks at 157 lbs. The senior was aggressive early, taking Hooks down three times in the first for a 6-3 advantage. Fittery scored two more takedowns in the second to move the score to 10-5 and then put the match away with an escape, three takedowns and riding time advantage in the third.
- Patrick Graham picked up a big win for the Eagles at 165 lbs., scoring a 5-3 decision over Corey Lear to give American a 16-8 lead. Graham opened the bout with two takedowns in the first and would take a 4-2 margin into the third period. Lear brought the score to 4-3 with an escape but could not score again on Graham, and with riding time advantage the sophomore walked away with the 5-3 win.
- Bucknell cut its deficit to 16-14 with a pair of wins at 174 lbs. and 184 lbs. as David Thompson earned a 5-3 decision over Tanner Shaffer and Rob Waltko picked up a 13-8 decision over Thomas Barreiro. That would be as close as the Bison would get, however, as the Eagles put the dual away at the final two weights.
- No. 18 Daniel Mitchell gave American some breathing room with a 6-4 decision over Jay Hahn at 197 lbs. Mitchell went on top 4-1 in the first with a pair of takedowns and Hahn closed the gap to 4-2 in the second with an escape. A Mitchell escape in the third made the match 5-2 before Hahn got in for a takedown to pull to within one, 5-4. Another Mitchell escape late in the frame ensured the win for the sophomore though, 6-4.
- No. 3 Ryan Flores closed out the dual with a quick pin of Joe McMullan at the 1:59 mark, giving American the final 25-14 victory.
- Fittery remains unbeaten on the year with his team-leading 20th bonus point win of the season. He is a perfect 24-0 in 2010-11 with 12 falls, five tech-falls and three major decisions. Flores moved his record to 18-5 with eight falls, two tech-falls and two major decisions.
v
- Mariacher leads the team in wins at 27-7 and has picked up seven victories in his last eight matches. Mitchell improved his overall record to 25-6 including five straight wins while Williams now stands at 14-12.
- American will return to the mat in two weeks at the EIWA Championships. This year's tournament will be held in Lewisburg, Pa. at Sojka Pavillion March 5-6.

#11 American University Wrestling Falls to Maryland 19-17 in Annual Bender
Take Down EventThe #11 American University wrestling team fell victim to bonus points once again Sunday as it split five matches with Maryland but came away on the wrong end of a 19-17 score. 1,113 fans were on hand in Bender Arena to witness the dual as the team celebrated its annual Bender Take Down event.
- American enjoyed a seven match winning streak just a few weeks ago but has dropped its last three to fall to 13-7. Maryland, meanwhile, picked up its third straight victory to improve to 13-4.
- The day got off to a great start as Nick Arujau and Shane Gentry battled through overtime to decide the 125 lbs. bout. Gentry took an early 4-1 lead on Arujau in the first but Arujau countered with a late takedown to even the score at four. Gentry scored another takedown in the second but an Arujau escape made the match 6-5 heading into the third. Arujau would tie the score at six with an escape in the period and the two would go scoreless through the first round of sudden victory overtime. Gentry chose to begin the first set of tiebreakers on top and rode Arujau out for the full 30 seconds. With Arujau on top in the second set, Gentry scored a reversal at the midway point and an escape by Arujau late made no difference as Gentry walked away with a 6-5 victory.
v
- Maryland then took a 7-0 lead over the Eagles in the team scores with a Lou Ruland major decision over Thomas Williams at 133 lbs., 11-1.
- American got on the board at 141 lbs. as #14 Matt Mariacher picked up a 4-2 sudden victory win over #16 Jon Kohler. The two went scoreless through the first period and Mariacher took a 2-0 lead in the second with a reversal of Kohler. Kohler brought the score to 2-1 with an escape before the period ran out and then tied the bout 2-2 with an escape in the third. Mariacher was the aggressor in the sudden victory overtime period, scoring a takedown just before time expired to earn the win.
- #10 Ganbayar Sanjaa made it two in a row for the Eagles with an 8-4 decision over Ben Dorsay at 149 lbs. Sanjaa went on top first with a takedown midway through the opening period and then took a 5-1 in the second with his second takedown of the match. Dorsay brought the score to 5-3 with an escape in the third but another Sanjaa takedown coupled with riding time advantage sealed the win, 8-4.
- #1 Steve Fittery gave American a 10-7 lead in the team scores, its first of the day, with a 13-4 major decision over #14 Kyle John at 157 lbs. Fittery came out quickly with a takedown and two nearfall points in the first. He then pushed his lead to 6-1 with a takedown in the second and 8-2 with a reversal to open the third. Fittery tacked on two more takedowns before the final buzzer and with riding time advantage earned the 13-4 major.
- The Eagles' lead was short lived, however, as Maryland answered back with three straight victories. A 7-1 decision by No. 3 Josh Asper over Patrick Graham at 165 lbs. tied the dual at 10 before No. 19 Mike Letts scored a 20-4 technical fall over 174-pounder Tanner Shaffer. After an 11-3 major decision at 184 lbs. by Corey Peltier against Thomas Barreiro, the Terrapins were out in front 19-10.
- #18 Daniel Mitchell ended Maryland's win streak but was unable to pick up the much needed bonus points as he defeated Christian Boley 8-6 at 197 lbs. Mitchell appeared to be cruising to a major decision with a 4-1 lead midway through the second period but a Boley escape closed the gap to 4-2. Mitchell earned that escape point back in the third and picked up a point for stalling and a 6-2 advantage. Boley was able to get in for two takedowns down the stretch run, however, as Mitchell held on for the 8-6 victory.
- #5 Ryan Flores closed out the dual with an impressive 16-7 major decision over Spencer Myers at heavyweight. Flores took the early 2-0 lead over Myers but was penalized late in the period for stalling, bringing the score to 2-1. A Myers escape to begin the second evened the score at two before Flores was able to score two takedowns for a 6-3 advantage. Flores moved the score to 9-3 with an escape and takedown early in the third and then tacked on three more takedowns and riding time advantage for the final 16-7 score.
- Fittery remains undefeated on the year at 23-0 with his victory over John. It was the senior's second straight win over a ranked opponent and fourth overall, while the major decision gives him a team leading 19 bonus point wins on the year.
- Flores improves to 17-5 with seven falls, two technical falls and two major decisions. Sanjaa, meanwhile, is now 20-3 and riding a 10-match winning streak while Mariacher goes to 26-7 with three wins over ranked opponents. Mitchell is 24-6 and has won each of his last four.
- American will return to action Sunday, February 20 when they host Bucknell in their final dual meet of the year at 7:30 p.m. Prior to the dual American will honor the career of Fittery in a special 'Senior Day' ceremony. Fans unable to attend the dual can catch all of the action live online at AUeagles.com via a subscription to Eagles Vision TV.

The No. 11 American University wrestling team won five matches Wednesday at No. 9 Rutgers but two bonus point victories allowed the Scarlet Knights to walk away with a 19-15 win over the Eagles.
- American has now dropped two straight duals after winning its previous seven. The Eagles record stands at 13-6 overall and 2-2 in the EIWA. Rutgers, meanwhile, earned its 16th straight win and improves to 20-1 overall and 8-0 in the EIWA.
- Rutgers picked up two big wins to begin the night as Joe Langel defeated Nick Arujau 7-4 at 125 lbs. and Mike DeMarco earned a 7-5 win over Kevin Tao at 133 lbs.
- The Eagles bounced back and picked up three straight victories of their own. No. 14 Matt Mariacher began the stretch with a 3-1 decision over Trevor Melde at 141 lbs. The two went scoreless into the second period where Mariacher picked up an escape point and takedown for a 3-0 lead. Melde brought the score to 3-1 with an escape in the third but could not even the score as Mariacher earned the win.
- No. 10 Ganbayar Sanjaa recorded a key victory for American with a 2-0 decision against No. 4 Mario Mason at 149 lbs. Like the bout before, Sanjaa and Mason went into the second period scoreless where Sanjaa took the lead with an escape. Mason chose bottom to begin the third period but could not escape the hold of Sanjaa, as the junior earned the 2-0 win with riding time.
- No. 1 Steve Fittery gave the Eagles their first lead of the night with a 6-3 decision over No. 15 Daryl Cocozzo at 157 lbs. Cocozzo scored a quick takedown to begin the match but an escape, takedown and nearfall gave Fittery a 5-2 lead after one. Fittery rode Cocozzo out for the entire second period and then added one more escape point in the third for the final 6-3 margin.
- Rutgers evened the team score at nine as No. 6 Scott Winston battled back to earn a 4-1 decision over 165-pounder Patrick Graham. Graham took a 1-0 lead into the third period but an escape by Winston tied the bout at one. Winston then scored a takedown and with riding time advantage earned the 4-1 win.
- The Scarlet Knights regained the lead with wins at 174 lbs. and 184 lbs., earning bonus points which proved to be the difference in the dual. No. 20 Alex Caruso defeated Tanner Shaffer by major decision 14-5 at 174 lbs. and Dan Rinaldi earned a first-period fall over Thomas Barreiro at 184 lbs. Heading into the final two weights, Rutgers held a 19-9 advantage over American.
- No. 18 Daniel Mitchell did his best to earn the crucial bonus points for the Eagles but could not as he defeated Mike Wagner 6-1 at 197 lbs. Mitchell led 4-1 after the first period and rode Wagner out for the entire two minutes in the second. The sophomore then added a point for an escape in the third but was unable to get in for another takedown, and with riding time advantage took the victory 6-1.
- Despite the fate of the dual having already been decided, the evening's final bout was one worth the anticipation as No. 5 Ryan Flores defeated No. 3 D.J. Russo, 9-2. Flores came out quickly and scored a takedown and two backpoints in the first period and then scored a second takedown in the second for a 6-2 lead. In the third period Flores reversed Russo, and with riding time advantage the junior took the match 9-2.
- Fittery remains unbeaten on the year with his win and improves to 22-0. He has defeated three ranked opponents on the season while picking up 18 bonus-point victories. Flores, meanwhile, improves to 16-5 with seven victories over opponents ranked in the top 12.
- Sanjaa has won nine straight matches with two of his last three victories coming against top 10 opponents. He defeated then-No. 7 Donald Vinson from Binghamton 8-3 Friday. Sanjaa is now 19-3 overall this season.
- Mariacher remains the team leader in wins at 25-7 and has won six of his last seven matches. Mitchell is now 23-6 overall and has also won six of his last seven.
- American will return to the mat Sunday, February 13 when it hosts Maryland in the team's annual 'Bender Takedown' event at 1:00 p.m. Fans unable to attend the dual can catch all of the action live online at AUeagles.com via a subscription to Eagles Vision TV.

AUeagles.com has released a special highlight video from the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships featuring interviews with All-American's Kyle Borshoff, Mike Cannon and Steve Fittery. AUeagles.com sat down with the three following the conclusion of the tournament to bring fans insight into the experience of becoming an All-American and to reminisce about their careers at American under the guidance of Head Coach Mark Cody.
Due to NCAA policy, AUeagles.com will only run this video for 24 hours beginning at 10:00 a.m. today and ending at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13. AUeagles.com will release a second video with still images in place of the video highlights once the 24 hour period has expired.
- The Eagles earned a program-record 14th-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships where they crowned a record three All-American's. Cannon became just the second three-time All-American in program history while Borshoff joined Cannon and 2007 national champion Josh Glenn as one of only three American student-athletes to earn All-America status in multiple years. Fittery, meanwhile, earned All-America status in his first appearance at the NCAA Division I Championships.
Cannon Takes Third, Fittery Fifth, Borshoff Eighth at 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships
#4 Mike Cannon's wrestling career came to a close on Saturday as the senior won two matches to place third at the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships. He was joined on the mat by fellow All-American's #5 Steve Fittery and Kyle Borshoff who placed fifth and eighth, respectively, helping American to a record 14th-place finish.
- With three student-athletes earning All-America, the Eagles tied for the seventh most All-America honors at this year's tournament. The three also mark a new program record, surpasing the previous record of two which the team had accomplished three times. Since 2005, the year Daniel Waters, '05, captured American's first All-America honor, the Eagles have sent 11 student-athletes to the podium at the NCAA Championships. American's 10 All-America honors over the past five years are second-most in the EIWA only to Cornell's 20.
- American also set a new program record by placing 14th overall in the team standings with 38.5 points. The Eagles are the second-highest placing team in the EIWA at this year's tournament, behind only Cornell which finished second. American had previously finished as high as 17th which the team accomplished in both 2006 and 2007.

Cannon Wins 184 lbs. Title at 106th EIWA Championships, American University Wrestling Records Team-Best Fifth-Place Finish
Senior #1 Mike Cannon won his second consecutive EIWA Championship Sunday afternoon to help the American University wrestling team to a program-record fifth-place finish at the 106th EIWA Championships. Cannon was joined in the finals by first-time placewinner #7 Jordan Lipp as a team-record seven Eagles finished on the podium.
- Cannon captured his second 184 lbs. EIWA Championship with a 5-1 decision over second-seeded Louis Caputo of Harvard. Cannon was making his third appearance in the EIWA finals, having also won last year's 184 lbs. title and wrestling for the 165 lbs. crown in 2008. Cannon's championship earns him an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships, joining him with Josh Glenn, '08, as the school's only four-time NCAA qualifiers.
- Lipp made his first appearance in the finals after upsetting both the tournaments second and third seeds at 141 lbs. on Saturday. He faced top-seeded Kyle Drake from Cornell in the championship match where he fell by a score of 9-2. Lipp's second-place finish marked the first time in his career he has placed at the EIWA Championships and has earned the senior his first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
- A total of seven Eagles finished on the podium at the EIWA Championships, surpassing the previous program record of six placewinners set last year. Junior #2 Steve Fittery placed third at 157 lbs. and freshman #5 Daniel Mitchell placed fourth at 197 lbs., earning the pair an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships. American's other placewinners included #2 Kyle Borshoff (5th), #3 Jasen Borshoff (6th) and #7 Thomas Williams (7th).
- With Cannon, Fittery, Lipp and Mitchell all automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships, the Eagles have matched their program record for NCAA qualifiers in a single-season. American sent Glenn, Christopher Stout, '09, Cannon and J. Borshoff to the 2008 NCAA Championships where Glenn and Cannon each earned All-America honors. K. Borshoff, J. Borshoff and Williams can still qualify for Nationals through the NCAA's at-large process. The NCAA has reserved 46 spaces for at-large qualifiers to this year's championship and will announce the recipients of those bids on Wednesday, March 10.
- American finished the team race in fifth place with a total of 96 points, marking the team's best-ever finish at the tournament. The Eagles' previous best finish was sixth place which they had achieved each of the last three years.
125 lbs. - #3 Jasen Borshoff
Borshoff fell behind Harvard's Steven Keith midway through the first period of the consolation semifinals and was unable to mount a comeback. Keith controlled the tempo throughout the match en route to a 9-3 victory. In the fifth-place match, Borshoff was again unnable to get on his offense and dropped a 6-4 decision to fourth-seeded Aaron Kalil from Navy to place sixth.
133 lbs. - #7 Thomas Williams
Williams squared off with Army's Travis Coffey, seeded sixth, in the seventh place match where he was forced to fight back from a 2-1 third-period deficit with Coffey also holding riding time advantage. With less than a minute remaining, Williams reversed Coffey and caught the Black Knight on his back for the pin to place seventh.
141 lbs. - #7 Jordan Lipp
Lipp, making his first EIWA finals appearance, fell to top-seeded Kyle Dake from Cornell, 9-2. Dake scored a takedown and back points in the first period for a 4-0 lead and added to his advantage in the second. Lipp came on strong in the third period, scoring a takedown midway through to close to within 6-2. A Dake takedown at the end of the period, however, closed the door on Lipp's championship bid. Lipp's second place finish marked the first time in his career that he has placed on the podium and has earned the senior his first career appearance at the NCAA Championships.
149 lbs. - #2 Kyle Borshoff
Borshoff took a 2-0 lead over Navy's Glenn Shober, seeded fourth, after scoring the first takedown of the match but could not hold on to his lead as the Midshipmen took a 4-3 advantage into the third period. Borshoff chose to begin down but was unable to escape from Shober who rode out the period for the win. The 2009 All-American returned in the fifth-place match where he caught Columbia's Steve Santos with a takedown and two sets of back points in the first period for a 6-0 lead. He would tack on an escape point in the second period and another takedown in the third. With riding time advantage, Borshoff earned the 9-1 victory for a fifth-place finish.
157 lbs. - #2 Steve Fittery
Fittery scored his first fall of the tournament with a second round pin of fifth-seeded Matt Dragon from Penn. The junior scored the match's first takedown and later used a reversal and three back points to build a 7-2 advantage. He added another set of back points in the second period before pinning Dragon's shoulders to the mat for the victory. In the consolation finals, Fittery picked up an escape point in the second period and rode out Rutgers' Daryl Cocozzo, seeded fourth, in the third period for a 2-1 victory and third place. Fittery has earned his first NCAA Championships appearance as an Eagle after placing second at the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Div. II Championships while wrestling for Shippensburg University.
174 lbs. - #1 Mike Cannon
Cannon won his second consecutive EIWA Championship with a 5-1 decision over Harvard's Louis Caputo, the tournament's second seed. Cannon was solid in the victory, scoring a takedown in the first period jump out on top. He added an escape point and another takedown in the second and third periods to gain the final margin.
