Appalachian University- Seven Mountaineers Place at Hokie Open

SALEM, Va. - In the team's first competition of the year, Appalachian State wrestling was represented by 17 wrestlers at the Hokie Open, hosted by Virginia Tech, on Sunday. Seven Mountaineers were place-winners at the event, including 184-pound champion Austin Trotman (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor).

The fourth edition of the annual event featured hundreds wrestlers from more than 20 college teams from around the region and as far as Colorado Springs (Air Force).

"All in all, I feel like we wrestled pretty well," said head coach JohnMark Bentley. "We competed hard, showed some hustle and proved that we can compete. We made some mistakes that we need to fix back in the training room, but we had a pretty good performance today."

Trotman survived a tough semifinal opponent in Virginia Tech's John Dickson but pulled through with a 5-3 decision. In the final, the senior defeated Newberry's Mitch Brown, 10-3, to cap a 4-0 day and take the Apps' only title.

Redshirt freshman Dominic Parisi (Harrisburg, N.C./Jay M. Robinson) picked up three straight wins to advance to the 125-pound final before he was edged by Virginia Tech's Ty Mitch, 4-3, to pick up a runner-up finish.

At 141 pounds, Mike Kessler (Bay City, Mich./Western) suffered a quarterfinal loss, 4-0, to The Citadel's Khishignyam Undrakhbayar, but the senior rebounded with three more wins before taking third place with a forfeit win in the wrestle-back final.

Senior Kyle Blevins (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa) advanced to the semifinal with three major decisions, but UNC's Kyle Kiss earned a 3-2 decision to relegate the senior to the lower bracket. The defending Southern Conference champion recovered to win his last two bouts for third place at 165 pounds.

Sophomore Chris Johnson (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange) made a nice run to the 133 pound semifinals but lost three-straight bouts to slip to sixth-place on the day.

ASU's final place-winner was Chip Powell (Greensboro, N.C./S.W. Guilford) at 157 pounds. The senior bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to win two bouts in the consolation bracket, including his pin of NC State's Mardel Gabriel. Powell was eventually eliminated by UNC's Corey Mock and was edged in his final bout to earn sixth place.

The Mountaineers return home on Sunday, Nov. 13 for their only home competition of the fall. Appalachian hosts Anderson at 1 p.m. and Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m. in their only Boone meet until January.

Two Appalachian Wrestlers Ranked in Preseason Polls

BOONE, N.C. - Two Appalachian State wrestlers have been ranked among the nation's best in preseason polls conducted by leading wrestling news outlets.

The Mountaineers' duo of defending Southern Conference champions, Kyle Blevins (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa) and Austin Trotman (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor), were both ranked as high as 13th nationally in their respective weight classes.

Blevins finished the 2010-11 season as the No. 18 wrestler at 165 pounds after taking Tournament Outstanding Wrestler honors at the 2011 SoCon event and posting a 2-2 record in the NCAA Championship. Last year, he tied the program record with 38 wins in the season and won 15 of his final 16 regular-season bouts. Blevins has been honored by the SoCon as Wrestler of the Week in each of the last two seasons, and the senior was tabbed preseason all-conference by the league's coaches.

Trotman has won a SoCon crown in each of the last two seasons and could become the first Mountaineer to three-peat since Mark Fee (165) in 2001-03. A three-time NCAA Championship qualifier, Trotman looks to be the first wrestler in Appalachian history to qualify for the national event in four seasons. The 184-pounder is a two-time all-conference selection and was named SoCon Wrestler of the Year in 2010. Trotman stands 23 wins away from the ASU career-wins record and could surpass that mark this season.

Appalachian begins its 2011-12 campaign on Sunday at the Hokie Open in Salem, Va. The Mountaineers host their only home competition of the fall on Sunday, Nov. 13 as they host Anderson and Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, in Varsity Gym.

Edinboro Alumnus Pearce Joins Appalachian Wrestling Staff

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University wrestling coach JohnMark Bentley announced the hiring of assistant coach Josh Pearce on Friday. Pearce has demonstrated a dedication to the sport of wrestling while exemplifying academic success outside the training room.

"I am excited about the addition of Josh to our coaching staff," remarked Bently. "Josh has a tremendous amount of experience that will be extremely valuable to our upper-weights at ASU."

Pearce brings nine years of coaching experience to the Mountaineer program. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Edinboro, in fall 2002 and later served another one year stint as assistant with the Fighting Scots. At the collegiate level, Pearce also served as head coach of the Penn State club team and assistant at Thiel College.

More recently, the Greenville, Pa. native has served as coach in his hometown at Commodore Perry High School and at Greenville High School. He also completed one year as head trainer at House of Speed in Youngstown, Ohio.

As a student-athlete, Pearce was the 2000 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) heavyweight champion. A two-time NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship qualifier, he was also selected to the EWL and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference all-academic team. As a member of Edinboro's wrestling squad, Pearce was the program's first wrestler to become a five-time EU Student-Athlete Award honoree.

At Commodore Perry High School, Pearce had a career record of 111-13 and was a two-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state finalist.

From 2004-06, Pearce trained at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. as an Olympic hopeful and resident athlete in freestyle wrestling.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to join the Appalachian State staff," commented Pearce. "I truly believe in what Coach Bentley is doing here and the direction the program is headed, and I am fully committed to helping the program reach its goal of being a national power. Appalachian State is a great university that offers a top education along with state-of-the-art facilities."

Appalachian wrestling hits the mats for the start of the practice season next week. The Mountaineers are slated to compete in the Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech on Nov. 6 and return to Boone for their home-opener against Anderson and Belmont Abbey on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Schedule Set for 2011-12 Wrestling Season

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University wrestling coach JohnMark Bentley announced his 2011-12 schedule on Friday. This year's schedule is highlighted by six home competitions, including the second annual Appalachian Open.

"I am excited about the upcoming year," notes Bentley. "I feel this year's team has the potential to be one of the best dual-meet teams ASU has had in some time."

This season begins with a visit to Salem, Va., to compete at the Hokie Open on Nov. 6. The following weekend, the Mountaineers return to Boone for their home-opener, a tri-meet featuring Anderson and Belmont Abbey on Sat., Nov. 13.

The Southern Conference slate opens with a trip to new SoCon associate member Gardner-Webb on Dec. 5. The Apps then head west for the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 16.

New Year's Day marks a new face for the Southern Scuffle. The perennial fixture for many teams has moved to Chattanooga for this season's edition on Jan. 1-2. ASU continues its SoCon schedule with road duals against newcomer Campbell on Jan. 9 and The Citadel on Jan. 20.

This year's Appalachian Open features wrestlers from dozens of regional teams and is scheduled for Sat., Jan. 28. ASU's final road dual is against SoCon-rival Chattanooga on Feb. 5.

The regular season concludes with four home duals beginning with matches against VMI and Virginia on Feb. 10 and 11, followed by Duke and Davidson on Feb. 18 and 19.

"Our difficult schedule should help prepare our athletes for the NCAA Tournament," predicts Bentley. "We return experience in eight of the 10 weight classes, and we have several guys who have the ability to make a run at the NCAA Championships."

This season's Southern Conference Championships will be held at Chattanooga on March 3 and the 2012 NCAA Championships will be conducted at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., March 15-17.

Trotman put the Mountaineers up by a single point at 16-15. With his decision, Trotman now has 23 wins on the season and has 81 for his career. Appalachian State Wrestling Topped By The Citadel, 26-7

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University wrestling (4-6, 0-1 SoCon) dropped its Southern Conference opener to The Citadel (3-5, 2-0 SoCon), 26-7, on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Gym.
Prior to the 184-pound match, the Mountaineers took time to recognize former wrestling student-athletes, coaches and managers.

The dual started off with the 141-pound match-up between junior Mike Kessler (Bay City, Mich./Western) and The Citadel's Jordan Dix. The first period of the match only featured a takedown by Kessler allowing him to carry a 2-0 advantage into the second period. Kessler grabbed another takedown to go up 4-0, but Dix countered with an escape bringing the match to 4-1. Kessler closed out the second period with another takedown to draw the match to 6-1 heading into the final period. Dix notched a takedown to put more points on the board, but Kessler tallied another takedown. Dix escaped again, but Kessler would score one more takedown to put down Dix and take the match 11-5 to put the Mountaineers ahead 3-0.

The Bulldogs took the 149 and 157 matches before heading into the much anticipated 165-pound match-up between #25 Kyle Blevins (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa) and #9 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj. Luvsandorj got things started off with a takedown, but Blevins escaped bringing the match to a 2-1 Luvsandorj advantage to close the first period. Blevins escaped again to tie things up at two, but Luvsandorj took down Blevins again as the second period came to a wrap to go ahead, 4-2. With the final period beginning, Luvsandorj got the best of Blevins again and created a 6-2 gap. With time against Blevins he escaped to close the gap to 6-3. Blevins was granted two points for Luvsandorj stalling, but that would be as close as Blevins would get as Luvsandorj took the decision, 6-5, moving The Citadel up to 10-3.

The Apps fell again at 174, but redshirt junior #28 Austin Trotman (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) turned the tide in the 184 match against Josh Tuck. Trotman struck first in the match and never let up as he earned a 16-5 major decision against Tuck. Trotman ended the first period of the match with an 8-3 advantage. Trotman struck three more times in the second period to go ahead 13-4 heading into the final period of action. In the last period, Trotman only allowed Tuck to escape and nailed one more takedown before notching the major decision, giving Appalachian its last points of the afternoon.

The Black and Gold grapplers are back in action again on Jan. 15 as they take part in the Lonestar Duals in Arlington, Texas.
