Schell Takes Second As Brown University Finish Eighth At Brockport-Oklahoma Gold Classic

Musser, Bloom, Einfrank, Marandino also place in season-opening tournament

Brockport, NY - Five Bears placed in the top five in their draw, as the Brown
wrestling team opened its season at the Brockport-Oklahoma Gold Classic at SUNY
Brockport on Saturday. Senior co-captain Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) had the
Bears' top finish, placing second at 133 pounds, as Brown finished eighth as a
team with 63.5 points. Also placing were juniors Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) and
Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA), and sophomores Mark Bloom (Manchester, NY) and
Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, NY).

Schell had the best championship bracket showing by far. He majored his
first-round opponent, 14-2, then beat Kent State's Clayton Stark in the second
round, 7-3, avenging his 3-2 loss to Stark at last year's Brockport-Oklahoma
Gold Classic. Schell won a close 3-2 decision over William Simpson of Army, who
was ranked one spot ahead of him at fifth in the EIWA preseason rankings, to
advance to the championship. There, he nearly upset 12th-ranked Dan Mitcheff of
Kent State, but fell, 2-1.

Musser had the Bears' second-best finish, coming in fourth in his first career
competition at 165 pounds. After falling, 5-3, in his first match of the day,
Musser tore through the consolation bracket, pinning his next two opponents in
under two minutes. A 7-2 decision and an injury default placed Musser in the
third-place match, where he lost a narrow 6-5 decision to Chad Porter of
Liberty.

Bloom, Einfrank, and Marandino all placed fifth in their respective classes.
Bloom and Einfrank both lost their first matches, at 149 and 125, respectively,
only to face those same opponents in the fifth-place match and win. After losing
to Scott Clymer of Liberty, 6-4, Bloom won a major decision, narrowly defeated
teammate Stephen DeLorenzo (Wantagh, NY), 3-2, and defeated his next foe, 6-3.
He lost to eventual third-place finisher Clint Sponseller of Kent State, 9-4,
before avenging his loss to Clymer, 9-7.

Einfrank lost his opening match to Kevin Smith of Buffalo, 6-4. He followed that
with 7-0, 4-2, and 4-1 decisions, including one over Greg Cannon of Oklahoma,
before falling to the Sooners' Joey Fio, 12-6. He dominated Smith in their
rematch, 11-3, to take fifth.

Marandino faced a tough first-round draw in eventual first-place finisher Chad
Terry of Oklahoma, losing 10-4. He picked up an 18-0 tech fall and two decisions
before narrowly losing to Shawn Smith of Liberty, 4-3. He won fifth place with a
9-6 decision over Chris Grill of Army.

Brown's deepest class at the meet was 149. Behind Bloom, both DeLorenzo and
returning starter Bryan Tracy (Williamstown, NJ) performed well. DeLorenzo
pinned his first opponent before narrowly falling, 2-0, to eventual second-place
finisher Dana Gingerich of Buffalo. His next match was his 3-2 loss to Bloom.
Tracy was majored in his opening match, but won two close decisions before being
eliminated by Clymer.

Also of note were the tough draws faced by Brown's two heavyweights, senior
co-captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) and junior Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, NH). Mock,
a returning NCAA qualifier, opened with Army's Nathan Thobaben, against whom he
was 1-2 last year, including a loss in the EIWA Championship third-place match.
After a pinfall loss to Thobaben, Mock was matched up against Mike Spaid of
Bloomsburg, the fifth-ranked heavyweight in the country, who also pinned him.

Zdrada had similarly poor luck. He opened with 16th-ranked Jermail Porter of
Kent State, who defeated him in an 11-5 decision. Zdrada pinned his next
opponent in under two minutes before losing in his next match by pinfall.

Oklahoma won the tournament by 72.5 points, winning eight of the 10 weight
classes. Brown's fellow EIWA members Army and Rutgers finished fourth and
seventh, respectively.

The Bears will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to Penn for the
Keystone Classic on Sunday.

Amato Names John Clark Brown Assistant Wrestling Coach
Former All-American joins Brown staff after one season each at Stanford, Lehigh

Providence, RI ˆ Brown University Head Wrestling Coach Dave Amato has announced the hiring of John Clark as an assistant wrestling coach. Clark, a two-time All-American and 2004 graduate of Ohio State, has spent one season each coaching at Stanford and Lehigh. He will serve as the recruiting coordinator and work with wrestlers from 157 po unds and up at Brown.

„I‚m very excited about having John on board,‰ said Amato. „His background and his family tradition are going to bring a lot of athletes to Brown University. He‚s an extremely hard worker, motivated, articulate ∑ he‚ll do a great job in all aspects of the program.‰

In his most recent position, Clark was the head coach of the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club in addition to his duties as an assistant at Lehigh. He worked primarily with the Mountain Hawks‚ middleweights. It was his second season as an assistant coach, after one year at Stanford.

In four seasons at Ohio State, Clark was a four-time NCAA qualifier. He was a two-time All-American at 165 pounds, finishing sixth in his junior year and fifth as a senior. He was the runner-up at 165 at the Big Ten Championship in 2002 and 2004. He is ranked fourth all-time at Ohio State in wins with 134, and is ranked third in takedowns (486) and team points (432.0). He graduated in 200 4 with a degree in Sociology, spending a year in sales before joining the Stanford staff.

Clark will fill one of two vacant assistant coach positions at Brown. Former assistant coaches Mike Burch and Shawn Charles both left the program after the 2006-07 season. Burch is pursuing a doctorate degree, while Charles left to take a position at Missouri, which finished third at the NCAA Championship this past season.

Brown's Kitchner and Mock Qualify for NCAA Wrestling Tournament
Pair finish fourth at 165, 285; Savino sixth at 141

East Stroudsburg, PA ˆ For the first time since the 2003-2004 season, the Brown wrestling team will send two wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament. Tri-captains Shawn Kitchner (Stratford, WI) and Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) finished fourth in their respective weight classes, earning automatic bids to the national championships. Junior Mark Savino (Princ eton, NJ), Brown‚s other wrestler competing on Saturday, finished in sixth at 141 pounds. As a team, Brown finished in 10th with 34.5 points for the tournament.

Kitchner, who wrestled for the first time this weekend since what was then-thought to be a season-ending injury on Jan. 7, came out determined to get one more weekend of wrestling before ending his collegiate career. In his consolation semifinal match, he faced second-seeded Zach Shanaman of Penn, who is ranked 10th in the country at 165. Kitchner took a 4-2 lead, scoring a takedown late in the third period to clinch a birth at nationals with a 6-2 victory. He faced #20 Andy Rendos of Bucknell in the consolation final, and grabbed a 4-2 lead after two takedowns. However, Rendos tied the match on a reversal just before the end of the second period, then got two more points on a takedown in the third for a 6-4 win.

Mock began his day with his second big win over Columbia‚s Kevin Lester in just over t wo weeks. On Feb. 16, Mock‚s pin of Lester gave Brown a 21-20 victory in a dual at the Pizzitola center, completing a 12-point comeback in the final two matches. This time, Mock cruised again, building a 13-4 lead before finally pinning Lester at 5:24 to clinch a spot at nationals. In the consolation finals, he faced Army‚s Nathan Thobaben for the second time in two days and third time this season. Thobaben took the rubber match on a pin at 1:38, after Mock had defeated him 4-3 the day before.

At 141 pounds, Savino opened with unseeded Kyle Borshoff of American, who had upset top-seeded Max Meltzer of Harvard in the first round on Friday. Borshoff built a 5-0 lead and held on, defeating Savino, 9-3. Savino still had a shot at an at-large bid, facing eighth-seed Brett McCurdy of Penn in the fifth-place match. The Brown junior held a 3-1 lead late in the match, but McCurdy scored a reversal with 10 seconds remaining to force overtime. Neither wrestler scored in the pair of 30-second tiebreakers, and McCurdy scored a sudden-victory takedown 27 seconds into the second overtime for the 5-3 win.

Kitchner and Mock will have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Tournament, held from March 15-17 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The tournament will be the final competition for Kitchner.

Brown End Dual Season With Loss to #12 Cornell, Win Over Delaware State
Schell, Savino, Fazio win in 28-10 loss to Big Red

Providence, RI - The dual season came to a close for the Brown wrestling team (6-12, 4-7 EIWA, 2-3 Ivy) on Saturday, as the Bears fell to #12 Cornell (9-5, 5-1, 5-0), 28-10, before defeating the outmanned Delaware State Hornets, 42-7. Juniors Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) and Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ), and sophomore Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ) picked up wins against the Big Red.

In the day's opening match, the Big Red opened a 17-0 lead after a pin, tech fall, and two decisions. Schell stepped up at 133 and took the day's first win, a hard-fought 2-1 decision that was decided by riding time. Savino, who was tied with Corey Manson after two periods, pulled away in the third, starting down, escaping, and getting a takedown plus riding time for the insurance points. Two matches later at 157, Fazio had two takedowns and a three-point near-fall to win 12-1 for a major decision. At 165, Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA), wrestling up a weight class because of injuries, nearly pulled off an upset of #10 Steve Anceravage, getting a reversal after starting the third period down to tie the score at 4-4. However, Anceravage escaped, giving him a 5-4 victory.

The Bears' match-up with Delaware State, which took place after the Hornets had already squared off with the Big Red, was not much of a match at all. Delaware State forfeited at four weight classes, and an injury default gave the Bears another six points. Sophomore Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) started the dual with an 8-2 decision. Savino picked up a 9-2 decision in the next contested match, then freshman Bryan Tracy (Williamstown, NJ), who was up 7-4 in the second period, won via an injury default. Fazio then picked up the final Brown win of the Delaware State dual, pinning his opponent in just 50 seconds.

In two weeks, the Bears will compete at the EIWA Championship, held at East Stroudsburg University.

Things went far better for Bruno against the Dragons, as the Bears won four of
the first six matches to take a 13-9 lead. Sophomore Matt Gevelinger (Mineral
Point, WI) got things started with a 19-9 major decision at 184 pounds. After
Drexel took the lead back on a pin, sophomore Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, NH) won in

No. 24 Lehigh Hands Brown 30-15 Loss
Mock pins ranked opponent in first round to lead Bears

Bethlehem, PA - Junior co-captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) pinned his ranked opponent in the first period, as the Brown wrestling team (1-6, 1-3 EIWA) fell to No. 24 Lehigh (11-6, 4-1), 30-15. Sophomores Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) and Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA) picked up wins as well.

The Mountain Hawks took the first three matches to get a 12-0 cushion. Junior Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) took the closest loss of the three, falling to his opponent at 133 pounds in the second overtime period. At 149, Marandino picked up the Bears' first points of the day when his opponent had to default due to an arm injury late in the third period. Lehigh followed with three more victories before Gevelinger picked up a 5-3 win at 184 pounds. Lehigh got its final points of the match with a pin at 197, but Mock gave his team a positive end to the day. Facing Paul Weibel, the 17th-ranked heavyweight in the country, Mock was able to quickly get the upper hand, putting Weibel on his back just 1:52 into the bout. The win brings Mock to 12-8 on the season.

The Bears' weekend road trip continues Sunday at Army. The match with the Golden Knights, who are ranked sixth in the EIWA in the most recent conference poll, starts at 4 p.m.

Scarlet Knights come back and win in final match

Providence, RI - Despite holding a 16-6 lead with three matches to go, the Brown wrestling team (1-5, 1-2 EIWA) lost a tough match with Rutgers () on Saturday, falling 18-16 at the Pizzitola Center. The teams split the 10 bouts evenly, but six points on an injury default proved to be the difference.

After the Scarlet Knights won the first match, sophomore Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) got the Bears a 4-3 lead with a commanding 14-4 major decision at 184 pounds. Rutgers got the lead back with a decision at 197, but the Bears won four decisions in a row - junior co-captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) at heavyweight, freshman Greg Einfrank (Millwood, NY) at 125, junior Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) at 133, and junior Mark Savino (Lawrenceville, NJ) at 141 - to take a 16-6 lead with three matches remaining.

After a Rutgers win at 149 in the first match of the season for sophomore Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA), the Scarlet Knights got their biggest boost. While holding a 1-0 lead in the first round of his 157-pound match, senior co-captain David Saadeh (Lancaster, PA) was forced to forfeit after suffering an injury. The six points got Rutgers to within one, and freshman Bran Crudden (Columbia, CT), who has been filling in for the injured Shawn Kitchner (Stratford, WI), dropped a tight 2-1 decision to end the match.

The Bears' slate will get even tougher next weekend, when they travel to Bethlehem, PA, to take on No. 25 Lehigh (9-6, 2-1 EIWA), which is coming off an upset of No. 11 Cornell.

Brown ties Harvard, Defeats Sacred Heart

Friends and Alums of Brown Wrestling,
The Bears continue to deliver consistency, good conditioning, and more
technically sound wrestling overall. But the shortcomings are often still
attributable to a lack of aggressiveness / intensity. Brown wrestled a fairly
solid bout against a competitive Harvard team, with the match finishing in a tie
at 18-18. With more intesnity in a few instances, the Bears might well have
come out on top. The following match Brown faced Sacred Heart who has had a
very respectable dual meet season with wins over Rutgers and Boston University.
Brown came down SH 26-15.

The weekend was led by four Bears who going 2-0. Shawn Kitchner recorded major
and regular decisions. Jeff Schell picked up 12 points with a fall and a
forfeit. Mike Ashton scored two regular decisions, and Freshman Matt Gevelinger
who has had the challenge of carrying the varsity spot as a true freshmen
without back-up relief, stepped up with two critical wins including a hard
fought 8-6 win against Harvard that kept Brown in the match. Gevelinger won
17-5 in his final bout against Sacred Heart.

The Bears return to action this Friday against Columbia University and Wagner,
then travel to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell for the final dual meet of the season.
The Bears stand at 7-7-1, needing wins in two of the three duals this weekend to
finish with a winning dual meet season. After this weekend Brown will have two
weeks to re-group and prepare for EIWA's at Lehigh University on Saturday and
Sunday March 4 & 5.

Brown Go 2-1 at Alumni Weekend Wrestling Event

The Bear's began the Ivy season this past weekend hosting friends, parents, and
alumni for "Alumni Weekend." Brown went 2-1 on the weekend losing on Friday to
#22 Penn 26-10, but bouncing back on Saturday to trounce Delaware State (32-6)
and Princeton University (36-7). Levon Mock went 2-0 at 285 lbs., Jeff Schell
2-0 at 125 lbs., and Shawn Kitchner 3-0 at 165 lbs. to lead the Bears. Mock and
Schell picked up one fall each while Kitchner recorded two major decisions on
the day.

Though Penn handed brown a sound defeat, the dual was perhaps a little closer
than the final score showed. The Bear's won three bouts and lost two others
that could have well gone the other way. Mark Savino at 141 lost a hard fought
match coming up short in OT, and brother Mike Savino lost in the final seconds
on a controversial takedown by his Penn opponent off of what appeared to be a
false start from the neutral position. Regardless, Penn was the clear winner
while the Bear's will have to continue their path of hard work and steady
improvement to reverse some of the individual scores at the EIWA Championships
in a few weeks.

This weekend Ivy League action continues as Brown faces Harvard at Brown @
10:00AM. Brown will also host Sacred Heart later in the day at 2:00PM.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Brown Sports foundation for hosting
our Alumni Reception, and a special thanks to all the alumni and parents who
came out to support Brown Wrestling. We had an exceptionally good turn out and
weíre encouraged by all the support. Thank you again and we hope to see you at
Easternís!

Results and Alumni Weekend Anouncement

The Bears are off to a good start in 2006 with a great performance at the Lone
Star Duals in Dallas, Texas on January 7th. Brown recorded wins over South
Dakota State University (33-6) and a competitive Cal State Fullerton team
(25-20). However, the Bear's best wrestling may have occurred in a close loss to
nationally ranked Purdue University. The Bears' took it to the final match of
the dual trailing the Boilermakers 17-16. Mike Ashton, 149 pounds, lost a hard
fought battle, 9-6, to finally fall to Purdue 20-16. The bout of the day was
without doubt at 184 pounds, where Bear's Freshman Branden Stearns scored a fall in the first 20 seconds of the second round over Purdue's Ben Wissel. Wissel was the Las Vegas champ, second at Midlands, and currently ranked fourth in the nation for Purdue. Brown's second loss as a team came earlier in the day to #18, Wisconsin (36-3).

Besides Stearn's incredible upset against Wissel, other individual highlights of
the day were Shawn Kitchner at 165 who went 4-0 and Mike Savino at 157 who went 3-1 in his debut after taking the fall semester off. Savino wrestled very solid for it being his first competition of the year. Dan Appello (133) and Levon
Mock (Hwt) also had respectable days going 2-2. Shawn Cully, debuted after
being off for a year with shoulder injuries. Cully wrestled just one match, but
recorded a solid win over South Dakota State (7-2) at 149 pounds.

So far the Bears have had very productive winter break practices and have shown
improvement each week. Credit goes directly to the team and especially the
freshmen who have stepped up at a time when we have needed our young wrestlersto come through. Attitudes have been very positive and team unity has added a lot to the overall performance. The leadership of all the upperclassmen has played an important role as well.

The Bears face Boston University and American University tomorrow (Saturday,
January 14) at the Brown Pizzitola Athletic complex. We expect both duals to be close, hard fought matches. Both opponents will test our competitiveness, and
once again we will count on several freshmen and sophomores to come through.
Regardless of what Saturday holds, the Bear's show signs of rallying in the
second half of the season in both attitude and effort. It has been rewarding to
work with these guys and watch their steady improvement.

ALUMNI WEEKEND ANNOUNCEMENT
We would like to remind everyone that Alumni Weekend is scheduled for Feb. 3 & 4 when the Bears face Penn on Friday, February 3rd at 3:00PM, and Delaware State and Princeton on Saturday, February 4th at 11:00AM and 2:00PM respectively.

There will be a catered reception for Alumni and Friends of Brown Wrestling
after the Saturday competition. The reception will be held on site in the
Pizzitola Joukowsky Room. A less formal alumni gathering for Friday evening is being discussed and will be detailed in a later email. We hope you will give
thought to coming out and supporting the Bears the first weekend of February to
see us kick off the Ivy season.

Thank you again for your support - and GO BEARS!

Results Show Signs of Improvement

The Keystone classic definitely marked a show of improvement for the Bears.
Seven Brown wrestlers placed in a fairly competitive tournament. Brown finished
7th as a team just behind Rider and ahead of Duke, Virginia Military Institute,
and Wagner. Penn was first followed by Virginia and American.

Overall the team made some important strides but we are still on the path to a
more aggressive style of wrestling, which I am confident we will see as the
season progresses.

The Bears are off until Saturday, when they return for practice. The team heads
out to Vegas on Wednesday, November 30th, competing Friday and Saturday Dec 2 & 3. I know that a number of alums plan on being there to cheers us on and lose
their money at the tables. We appreciate your support and so does Vegas!

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Re-Cap & Upcoming Event Information (Penn & Vegas)

Greetings Brown Wrestling Fans,

The flat tire on the bus ride to Brockport was an omen that our performance
might be flat as well, as the season opener reminded much of the team that
Division I wrestling is often just a fight and nothing more. Jeff Schell, 125,
was the lone Bear to place (6th), as Brown finished at the bottom of the field.
We did however see some encouraging moments from some Freshmen who battled well
against more experienced and season wrestlers. Though Freshmen Mark Bloom (149)
and Matt Gevelinger (174) didn't place, they showed tenacity and promise. The
upperclassmen as a whole will need to redeem themselves this coming weekend with
more tenacious displays of what is suppose to be a combative sport.

On another note, five of our eleven Freshmen traveled with Coach Burch to a 17
team Division III tournament at Roger Williams Univeristy (RWU) in RI. Ross
Baldwin, 133, finished 6th and Zach Zdrada, Hwt., was 5th. The remaing three
wrestlers went 2-2. Zdrada was the highlight showing a lot of ability to be an
agile heavyweight. All five showed an ability to make immediate adjustments
throughout the day to correct mistakes - a very important quality. These
freshmen will join the squad at Penn on Sunday for a much more competitive
tournamnet than what they saw this past weekend at RWU.

The overall assessment is that this was not a good start, but what's missing is
not a mystery to the staff or the athletes - i.e. aggressive wrestling. This
coming weekend is an important weekend not only because we need to improve, but
because the issue on the table is intensity, and it will be important to see if
our upperclassmen in particular will rebound from this past weekend's
performance.

The coaching staff remains optimistic, but realizes this week's practices need
to be an exercise in mental toughness.

Greetings Alumni and Friends of Brown Wrestling!

The 2005-06 Brown Wrestling season has begun! We are in our first week of
official practices this week and looking forward to the first competition in
Brockport, NY on November 12th. We have had a good 4 weeks of pre-season
workouts 4 days a week, which included weights, running, and drilling. The
freshmen have looked great and the team has been very together.

Before I take some space to talk about the upcoming season and introduce our 11
new freshmen, I want to thank Ken Bigley for his hard work over the past three
years and wish him well in his new position as the Athletic Director at the
Trevor Day School in Manhattan, NYC. Ken made a great contribution to our
program and he will be missed.

On that same note we are very excited to have Brad Cieleski joining the coaching
staff. Brad will be filling the second assistant position. Brad is a graduate
of the University of Missouri where he finished 2nd in the Big 12 and made it to
the round of 12 at the NCAAís. Prior to attending the University of Missouri,
Coach Cieleski wrestled three years at Slippery Rock where he was a 3x NCAA
qualifier. We are fortunate to have Coach Cieleski on staff. He is doing a
fantastic job in the practice room and also with recruiting. He has been
especially effective recruiting in the state of PA where he was a very
successful high school wrestler.

I am personally very excited to be back in the first assistant position where I
was in 1995 prior to becoming the head coach at UC Davis (1995-01). I know
Brown very well athletically and academically and have always felt it to be a
great fit for me. I am looking forward to working with a great group of guys
and getting to know the alumni better. Please feel free to call me or email me
anytime if you have questions or just want to chat about the season.

We are getting prepared for our first competitive event coming up on November
12th in Brockport, NY. The team has been working very hard and I am especially
pleased with what I am seeing in our freshmen. I think it would be helpful for
all of you to get to know our freshmen, so I have included a brief introduction
of each individual below.

I see this as a challenging and critical year for Brown to begin climbing back
to the upper ranks of the EIWA. We have a tough schedule ahead and a lot of
important goals to accomplish as a team this year. Given what I have seen in
the first five weeks of practices, I am optimistic about us showing a lot of
improvement by mid-year. I am really enjoying coaching these guys and I
appreciate the attitude they are bringing to the room everyday.

I want all of you to know that your support is absolutely essential to our
development and it is never taken for granted. I know the wrestlers appreciate
it as well. I hope to see as many of you as possible at either home or away
meets if it is ever possible for you to attend. Your presence at matches means
a lot, though I know it is difficult for many of you to attend a match during
the year. Your correspondences via email is a supportive measure too.

Thank you again for your continued enthusiasm for Brown Wrestling ñ we look
forward to a great year!

Season Awards

The Brown Wrestling program concluded the 2004-2005 season with their annual
awards banquet this past weekend recognizing individual wrestlers for their
accomplishments this season. The awards, as voted on by their teammates, were
distributed as follows. Junior Dan Appello was recognized at "The Most
Dedicated" wrestler for the past season, while Junior David Saadeh was chosen by
his teammates to receive the "Unsung Hero" award. The Ralph Anderton-Edward
Durdin Award acknowledging the athlete who performed best under pressure was
given to Junior Mike Pedro. Pedro was also selected by his teammates to receive
the Don Van Heest Award, which is given annually to one who came back from
adversity. Senior Heath Lohrman was selected as the winner of the Marvin
Wilenzik Award, which recognizes the individual team member who gave the most
back to Brown. The Savino brothers garnered a pair of awards with Freshman Mark
being selected to receive the Artemis Joukowsky Award given to the most
promising Freshman, and Junior Mike selected as the "Most Improved." The final
award of the banquet, the Michael T. Wallace Award recognizing the most valuable
performer award, was given to Freshman Jeff Shell. Concluding the banquet it was
announced that Mike Savino, Mike Pedro, and Shawn Kitchner will be next years
team captains.

Shell named Male Brown University Freshman Student Athlete of the Year

On Thursday, May 5th, at the Brown University All Sports Banquet Freshman Jeff
Schell was chosen as the Winner of the Joe Paterno '50 Award. The Joe Paterno
'50 award is given annually to recognize the outstanding freshman male
student-athlete among the Universities seventeen men's sports programs. The
award is voted on by Brown's head coaches. The last time a Brown Wrestler won
the Joe Paterno '50 award was six years ago when Bronson Lingamfelter was
selected for the honor.

Brown Wrestling Named the Nations Top Academic Wrestling Team; Heist named First
Team Academic All-American

The National Wrestling Coaches Association recently released their annual
academic ranking of the nations wrestling teams. The rankings are based on the
cumulative GPA of the team members. For the first time in the history program
Brown was recognized as the nation's top team. Brown has been hovering near the
top in recent years landing in 4th place in '02-'03 and finishing 5th last
season. Junior Doran Heist, a pre-med major, was named to the NWCA
All-Academic first team. Heist finished the year with a 18-11 record and a 6th
place finish at the EIWA Championships.

All-Ivy Selections

Junior 133 pound grappler Dan Appello, as well as his 184 pound teammate Doran
Heist were both selected to the second team All-Ivy. Two other Juniors, Mike
Savino and Mike Pedro both received All-Ivy honorable mentions.

Schell qualifies for nationals with 5th place finish at EIWA Championships

In what was certainly one of the most competitive EIWA Championships fields ever
( four #1 ranked wrestlers, nine returning All-Americans, 33 top twenty ranked
individuals and five top twenty-five nationally ranked teams) Freshman 125 pound
wrestler Jeff Schell led the Bear with a 5th place finish and a wild card bid to
the NCAA Championships. Schell opened the tournament with a first round bye
followed by a 5-3 loss to Penn's Mason Lenhard. Schell then reeled of two
straight wins (8-3 over Travis Featherstone - Army, and 12-2 over Rick Ringle -
Rutgers) before falling in the consolation semi-final round 3-1 to Columbia's
Jeff Sato. In his final bout of the day Schell claimed his fifth place finish
downing Lehigh's Andrew Rizzi 9-5.

At 133 Junior Dan Appello also received a first round bye facing second seed
(and 5th ranked) Matt Ciasulli in the second round. Appello wrestled a tough
match but fell short losing 4-0 to Ciasulli. In his first wrestle-back match
Appello was leading East Stroudsburg's Ryan McCallum, before getting caught in a
cement mixer and pinned.

Wrestling 141 for the Bears was Freshman Mark Savino. Savino dropped his first
round match 10-6 to ESU's Scott Heckman. In his second match Mark faced eventual
third place finisher Jordan Leen of Cornell losing 5-0.

At 149 the Bears were also two and out as Junior Tim Smith lost his first match
5-1 to Harvard's Dominic DeNunzio and his second match 10-2 to American's Tom
Kniezewski.

Junior Mike Savino won his opening bout with an 11-4 victory over Penn's Brock
Wittmeyer. In his second match of the day Savino stepped on the mat to battle
the second seed (and 9th ranked) Derek Zinc of Lehigh, losing 16-7. Savino
wrestled back tough defeating ESU's Keith Kleckner 12-3, and was beating Navy's
Pat Lukanich by ten points and trying to score two more when Lukanich sprawled
to defend Savino's shot, managed a to lock up a cradle from the front headlock
position, and put Savino on his back for the fall with less than thirty seconds
remaining in the bout.

165 saw Brown's lone Senior, Heath Lohrman, step on the mat in the Brown
uniform. Heath received a first round bye only to face the nations top ranked
165 pound wrestler, Troy Letters of Lehigh, in the second round. Letters
defeated Lohrman 14-4. In his first round wrestle back match Lohrman fell 2-0
to ESU's Keith Smith.

Mike Pedro opened up the tournament defeating Princeton's 174 pound wrestler
Matt Denichilo by a 7-0 score. In his next match Pedro dropped an 11-5 decision
to top seeded (and 5th ranked) Andrew Roy of Rutgers. Pedro proceeded to dispose
of Harvard's Jonathon Butler 16-4 in his first wrestle-back match. In his next
bout Pedro faced Penn's Dustin Wiles. With the score tied at the end of
regulation the match went to overtime. With the score still tied after the first
overtime period the match went to a second overtime. Pedro escaped to take a 1-0
lead in the first of the two thirty second periods. In the second of the two
thirty second periods Pedro threw in double leg's to try and keep Wiles from
escaping. Pedro got a little high and Wiles took advantage of the mistake
hunting down Pedro's head and stacking him for a defensive fall.

Doran Heist, wrestling for the first time in over three weeks after suffering an
injury in the Cornell dual, dropped his opening round match 6-3 to Lehigh's 184
pound wrestler Brian LaMay. Heist bounced back to defeat Harvard's Eddie Jones
12-4 and Navy's Chris Pougue 5-3. Heist was then defeated 3-1 by Rutgers' Chris
Ressa. In his final match of the day Heist fell 5-3 to Army's Luke Calvert to
finish in 6th place.

At 197 Freshman Leo Saniuk lost 4-2 to Rutgers' Ken Stiles in the tournament's
opening round. In his second match Saniuk fell 2-1 ESU's Phil Hard.

Lee Beane opened the tournament upsetting 8th seeded Adam LoPicclo of American
by a 7-4 score. In his next match Beane was pinned by top seeded (and 6th
ranked) Matt Feast of Penn. In his first wrestle-back Beane dominated
Princeton's Kristopher Berr by a second period 16-1 technical fall. In his
second wrestle-back match Beane fell 4-0 to Cornell's Tyler Shovlin.
Brown dominates Harvard to close out the regular season

Brown won seven of ten bouts including two by pin and one by major decision to
win their final dual meet of the year 31-10. Nate Myers received a forfeit at
125 pounds to put the first points on the board for the Bears. Adding four more
team points to the team tally, Dan Appello scored four takedowns to major
decision Harvard's Brent Kakesako 10-2 in the 133 pound match-up. With his team
trailing by ten Harvard's Mike Baria got things going for the Crimson. Wrestling
Brown's Mark Savino Baria scored a first period takedown and a three point
near-fall. A scoreless second period saw Baria ride out Savino. Baria scored a
third period reversal and another three point near-fall. With riding time Baria
won 11-0 giving Harvard their first points of the dual. Harvard's Dominic
Denunzio added three additional team points scoring a sudden victory takedown in
the first overtime period in his bout with Brown's Tim Smith. The win narrowed
Brown's lead to three points as the score stood 10-7 heading into the 157 pound
bout. The 157 pound match featured Brown's Mike Savino battling Harvard's John
Malcovitch. Malcovitch beat Savino 11-6 in the 2003 dual, but this year the
victory belonged to Savino. Malcovitch struck first scoring an early first
period takedown to take a 2-0 lead. Savino earned a reversal midway through the
first and Malcovitch earned an escape near the end of the period to take a 3-2
lead heading into the second period. Malcovithch scored the lone point of the
second period; a penalty point to extend his lead to 4-2. Savino scored a late
period escape, and then secured the match winning takedown with less then
sixteen seconds remaining in the bout. The Savino victory gave Brown a 13-7
lead. At 165, Brown Sophomore Shawn Kitchner came up big. Taking a 2-0 lead into
the second period Kitchner took Harvard's Matt Button from foot to back scoring
a fall at the 4:23 mark. The fall gave Brown a 19-7 lead as the Bears began to
run away with the dual. Brown Senior Heath Lohrman, coming off an illness and
wrestling in the last dual meet of his career bumped up to the 174 pound weight
class and gave Brown a big boost using a first period single leg takedown, a
third period reversal, and over a minute of riding time to defeat Harvard's Nate
Picarsic 5-0 and further Brown's lead to 22-7. Freshman Joe Walton sealed the
team victory for the Bears at 184 as he used a leg sweep from a double
underhook to put Harvard's Billy Colgan on his back for a two count taking an
early four point lead in the bout. Coglan used first and second period escapes
to narrow Walton's lead to 4-2. Walton scored an escape of his own to start the
third period, then scored the decisive third period takedown to go ahead 7-2.
Coglan scored an additional escape but it wasn't enough as Walton held on to win
7-3 and seal the team victory for Brown. Bumping all the way up from 174 Mike
Pedro put an exclamation point on the Bear's team victory scoring a fall over
Harvard's Andrew Dane at the 4:20 mark. The pin put the Bears up 31-7. The
heavyweight match-up featured the nation's seventh ranked big man in Harvard
Sophomore Bode Ogunwole. Stepping on the mat to battle Ogunwold was Brown Junior
Lee Beane. Ogunwole scored and early snatch single to take a 2-0 lead. Beane
immediately scored an escape to narrow the match to 2-1. Most of the match took
place on the feet as Ogunwole scored a quick escape of his own to start the
second, and Beane and escape to start the third. Trailing 3-2 Beane was not able
to score the go-ahead takedown and Ogunwole held on to win by a point adding
three team points for the Crimson making the final score Brown 31, Harvard 10.

The Bears have next weekend off in preparation for the EIWA Championchips, which
take place on March 4th & 5th at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
