Nationally Ranked Buena Vista Outscores Central Wrestlers
STORM LAKE-Ross Patton (senior, Burlington) was the lone winner for the Central College wrestling team Wednesday as 26th-ranked Buena Vista scored a 47-3 decision.

Patton edged Tyler Winkleman 4-3 at 165 pounds, improving to 5-2 in an injury-plagued season.
Ryan DeVriendt (junior, Sherrard, Ill.) fell a point shy in a 6-5 loss to Kyle Forness at 149 pounds, but the shorthanded Dutch struggled most of the night. Forced to forfeit at the first three weights, Central (1-8) trailed 18-0 before the action started. Buena Vista (6-5) also recorded three falls.

The Dutch return home to host the Central Invitational Saturday. The non-scored tourney begins at 9 a.m. in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. Among the schools expected to send wrestlers are Dubuque, Morningside, William Penn, Northwestern and Loras.

Baxter to Retire as Buena Vista University Wrestling Coach

STORM LAKE, IOWA - Buena Vista University head wrestling coach Al
Baxter has announced that he is retiring after 26 seasons and a
376-119-5 overall record.

Baxter's teams have won eight conference titles and have finished in
the nation's top ten 12 times. Among his wrestlers have been 37 Academic
Scholar All-Americans, 71 All-Americans, and six National Champions.
This past week, the Beavers qualified three wrestlers for the 2004
Division III National Championships.

"Coach Baxter's name has become synonymous with Buena Vista Wrestling,
but he will be sorely missed all over campus, and not just in the
wrestling room," said BVU President Fred Moore. During his 26 years of
service to the University, Baxter has also worked in the Admissions,
Student Services, and Institutional Advancement offices.

Baxter's fame has spread throughout the nation. He received the
Lifetime Service Award to Wrestling and was inducted into the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame (Iowa Chapter) in the fall of 2000. He was
inducted into the NWCA Hall of Fame in 1999, was named Morningside
College's Alumni Coach of the Year in 1998, and was inducted into the
Iowa High School Athletic Association Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1992.

In addition, Baxter has been named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year
five times and was named National Coach of the Year in 1990. He is a
past president of the NWCA and a past president in the Iowa High School
Wrestling and Officials Association.
As a high school wrestler, Baxter was himself crowned 1965 State
Champion in the 165 lb. weight class during his senior year at Morning
Sun (Iowa). He went on to wrestle at Morningside College, earning
All-American honors in 1968 in the 190 lb. weight class.

Baxter began his coaching career at Lisbon High School, where his teams
won the state championship in five of his nine seasons. While at Lisbon,
he was named the Iowa High School Wrestling Coach of the year in 1974,
National High School Athletic Coaches Association Wrestling Coach of the
Year in 1978, and District Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1974 and 1978.
In 2002, Baxter was inducted as the inaugural candidate into the Lisbon
High School Hall of Fame.

Among the hundreds of former student-athletes to have wrestled for
Baxter, over 70 former wrestlers are currently involved in coaching the
sport in nine states.

"I can personally say Al Baxter has been one of the most influential
people in my life. I've always aspired to be like him because he's
accomplished what he has done for the sport of wrestling with class and
dignity," commented Simpson Coach Ron Peterson (1980 BVU graduate). "I
don't know where I would be if he hadn't recruited me to Buena Vista and
into college coaching. Al has been an icon not only in the Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but in the nation among Division
III wrestling programs. He brought our sport to another level, and
everyone in our conference to a higher level."

"Al Baxter has defined wrestling in the Iowa Conference for more than
25 years," agreed Iowa Conference commissioner John Cochrane. "The work
spent developing the sport nationally and regionally in Division III can
be linked back to Coach Baxter. I consider it a privilege to have been
associated with Al."

"He's always been a class act," added former Cornell College wrestling
coach Steve Devries. "His great strength as a coach is his loyalty to
his athletes. He's totally committed to his student-athletes, and that's
what a Division III coach is. He's a joy to compete with -- you love the
guy for his integrity and great sense of humor. I consider him to be my
best friend in coaching, and I spent two decades at Cornell College
trying to beat him! He's the dean of Iowa Conference wrestling
coaches."
Baxter's retirement will take effect at the end of BVU's current
academic year.
