Three Bakersfield Wrestlers Reach Finals at Pac10s
STANFORD, Calif. The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team put a
frustrating regular season behind them with a strong showing on day one of
the 2006 Pac10 Conference championships Sunday at Maples Pavilion in
Stanford, advancing three to the finals while four others remain alive in
the consolation bracket.

The Roadrunners turned a number of heads in the tournament, finishing
the

first day in third place overall with 74 points after finishing the season
No. 7 in the final rankings. Bakersfield is edging out Boise State, which
has 73.5 points, and Oregon State, which sits in fifth place with 70.
Arizona State has the early lead with 103 points but Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo is giving the Sun Devils a stronger test than most expected,
scoring 90 points with all of its wrestlers still in the tourney.
Senior Tommy Vargas (Highland/Northwestern) was among the biggest
surprises in the tournament so far, pulling a number of upsets to wrestle
into the finals at 133 pounds. Vargas, the fifth seed, opened with a 20
win over No. 4 Bobby Pfennigs of Oregon State then downed the top seed,
Justin Pearch of Oregon by a 32 count.

Vargas, who hasn,t wrestled in an official match since the beginning of
January, earns his first trip to the NCAA championships and will square
off against the No. 3 seed, Scott Jorgensen from Boise State in the
finals. Jorgensen, the twotime defending Pac10 champ, defeated
Bakersfield,s Matt Sanchez in the title bout last season.

Fellow senior Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) shook off a
mediocre end of the season by putting together a pair of impressive wins
to skate into the finals at 165 pounds. Busby, who was also seeded fifth
in the tournament, picked up his first win of the season over UC Davis,
Frank Richmond, pinning the No. 4 seed in 6:39 to open the tournament.
Busby then faced Cal Poly,s Robb Maxwell, an unseeded wrestler in the
semifinals. Maxwell, who pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament
thus far by beating No. 1 seeded Joey Bracamonte of Oregon 153 in the
first round, gave Busby a run early, but fell 62. He will face No. 3 Pat
Pitsch of Arizona State in the finals Monday evening.

Senior Anthony Baza (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) proved he was worthy of the
No. 1 seed at 149 pounds with a pair of convincing wins en route to the
finals. Baza ensured his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships by
beating Oregon,s Stewart Bogart 90 in the first round and Fullerton,s
Morgan Atkinson"the No. 5 seed"by a 62 count in the semis.
Baza earns a rematch with the No. 2 seed, Boise State,s Tyler Sherfey,
in
the finals. Baza edged Sherfey by a 96 count when the two battled in late
January at Bakersfield after the Bronco star dominated Baza at the Reno
Tournament of Champions in November.
Four other wrestlers remain in the tournament for the Roadrunners,
heralded by 157pounder Daniel Atondo (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS). Atondo, who
entered the tournament unseeded, has won two of three matches so far and
is assured of placing in the top six. Monday he opens against the No. 3
seed Tony Hook of Oregon State with a chance to earn a trip to the NCAA
tournament on the line.

Senior Christian Arellano (Moreno Valley/Scripps Ranch HS) won his first
match before falling in the semis. Arellano, the No. 3 seed, lost 134 to
the No. 2 seed Ken Cook of UC Davis. He will square off with Oregon,s Chet
McBee in the first match Saturday.

Junior Eric Parker will look to make his No. 3 seed stand up in the
consolation bracket Monday. Parker scored a tech fall victory in his
opening match, but was pinned by No. 2 Ty Watterson of Oregon State in the
semifinals. He will take on No. 5 Arturo Basulto of Cal Poly in his first
match of day two.

Another No. 3 seed, Matt Schumm (Corona/Centennial HS) lost to a No. 2
seed in the semis. Schumm will look to advance to the third/fourth place
match with a victory over the No. 5 seed Teddy Astorga of Fullerton Monday
morning.

The final day of the tournament begins at 11 a.m. on Monday with the
consolation semifinals followed by fifth/sixth and third/fourth place
matches. The championship matches begin at 6 p.m.

CSUB Wrestling Easily Wins Annual California Tournament Title

SAN FRANCISCO ó The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team wrapped up its
regular season schedule with a dominating performance, winning the 30th
Annual California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational Saturday at The Swamp
on the campus of San Francisco State.
The Roadrunners won seven of the 10 individual titles and scored 88
points, easily cruising to the team title in the eight-team tournament.
Fresno State placed second in the field with 41 points.
Bakersfield wrestlers dominated the finals in three of the weight
classes. At 125 pounds, Zack Bigboy (Minneapolis, Minn./Kennedy HS) scored
a first period fall over fellow freshman Brandon Zoetewey San Ramon,
Calif./De la Salle HS) in another chapter of the epic battle the two have
waged against each other this season. Both wrestlers scored a pair of wins
by decision to advance to the finals.
At 141 pounds, the íRunners placed two in the finals with Matt Schumm
(Corona/Centennial HS) picking up the 7ñ6 decision victory over Jeremy
Doyle (Ramona HS). A pair of Bakersfield grapplers also met in the finals
at 157 pounds as Daniel Atondo (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) edged out David
Garcia (Azusa/Bishop Amat HS) in a 6ñ5 decision.
Other victors on the day included Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville,
Georgia/Dawson County HS) at 131 pounds, Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps
Ranch HS) at 165 pounds, Garth Wara (Madera HS) at 174 pounds and Ryan
Bergman (Rocklin HS) at 197 pounds.
Busby had little trouble at 165 pounds, going 3ñ0 overall with a pin and
two tech falls including a 16ñ0 shutout in the championship match.
Heavyweight Eric Parker (Ramona HS) gave Fresno Stateís Cody Parker a
tough match when the two dueled in Bakersfield earlier this season, but
the Bulldogís Parker got the better of the two Saturday. Cody Parker was
able to pick up the fall early in the first period for the title.
Brandon Doyle (Ramona HS) lost a tough 11ñ7 decision to Chadron Stateís
Mark Pfeiffer, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, in the finals at 149
pounds.
The Bakersfield wrestlers take some much needed time off to prepare for
the Pacñ10 Conference Championships Feb. 26ñ27 at Maples Pavilion in

Cal State Bakerfield Down Arch Rival Cal Poly, 26-19

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team scored a
big victory over archrival and No. 20ranked Cal Poly Wednesday night at
the Icardo Center in its final home dual of the season.
Riding the momentum of two big victories by senior Anthony Baza
(Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) and junior Eric Parker (Ramona HS), the Roadrunners
took six of the 10 matches from a battered Mustang squad.
Parker, who entered the match as the No. 3 heavyweight in the Pac10,
took care of an upsetminded Arturo Basulto with an impressive technical
fall victory. Parker jumped all over the Mustang,s heavyweight, scoring
nine takedowns in all and adding a pair of nearfall points in the 227
victory.
The match of the night came at 149 pounds. It featured Baza, ranked No.
18 in the latest NWCA/NCAA Division I coaches poll and No. 1 in the Pac10
rankings, and Jeff Owens, ranked No. 20 in the nation and No. 2 in the
conference. While it was supposed to be a close contest, the match ended
up being dominated by Baza who recorded the initial takedown 19 seconds in
and rode Owens out the rest of the period. In the second, Baza opened with
a quick escape and scored another takedown one minute in. In the third
Owens scored an escape, but was taken down again by Baza with 30 seconds
remaining. When all was said and done, Baza stood victorious in the middle
of the ring with the 81 victory.
Another strong performance was turned in by junior Matt Schumm
(Corona/Centennial HS), who scored a 32 win over David Roberts at 141
pounds. Schumm jumped out early, scoring a takedown with 43 seconds
remaining in the first period. With the score at 31 heading into the
third, Roberts, who entered with a 122 record and ranked No. 3 in the
Pac10, started in the down position. Schumm was able to stay on top until
a late scramble gave Roberts the escape. As the horn sounded to end the
match, Roberts was desperately looking to score the late takedown, but was
unable to gain any type of control.

Ryan Bergman (Rocklin HS) opened the match with a comefrombehind victory
over Yuri Kalika at 197 pounds. Kalika jumped out to a quick 41 lead, but
ran out of gas in the second as Bergman scored a takedown 30 seconds into
the second to take back the lead at 54. Bergman scored another takedown
in the third en route to a 94 decision for his second win of the season.
Senior Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) and freshman Thomas
Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Georgia/Dawson County HS) were awarded victories
via forfeit at 165 and 133 pounds, respectively.

CS Bakersfield 36 , Fresno State 10

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ó The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling squad put
together one of its best overall dual performances of the year to easily
win the battle of the valley rivals, downing Fresno State 36ñ10 Wednesday
night at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.
The Roadrunners dominated the match from the start, receiving a bit of
help from three forfeits by the injuryñriddled Bulldogs along the way.
Bakersfield improves to 2ñ3 on the season while Fresno State fell to 3ñ3.
Senior Anthony Baza (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) opened the dual with a
dominating performance over Dustin Rocha at 149 pounds. Baza jumped all
over Rocha, taking him down and earning a number of back points before the
match ended in a tech fall midway though the second period. It was Bazaís
fourth straight victory and eighth in his last nine matches.
That led to the forfeit parade as Fresno State failed to put out a
wrestler at 157, 165 and 174 pounds.
After a major decision gave the Bulldogs their first points, freshman
Colton Nichols (Poway HS) recorded his first collegiate victory via an
injury default at 197 pounds. For Nichols, it was a matter of revenge as
he was able to earn a victory over Fresno Stateís Brandon Halsey, who had
beat him out of the California state title two years ago. Nichols came out
firing, taking Halsey down and to his back just 12 seconds into the match.
After a pair of injury timeouts called with Nichols going for the pin,
Halsey finally was forced into the default with an unspecified injury.
The most entertaining match of the night came at heavyweight where the
battle of Parkers was rekindled. Fresnoís Cody Parker, who had transferred
last summer from Oregon, jumped out to a quick lead and held a 12ñ6
advantage with 1:21 remaining in the match. Eric Parker (Ramona HS)
responded, continually took his namesake down while closing the gap to
13ñ15 in the waning seconds. The Bakersfield Parker was unable to record
another takedown, however, and Cody Parker won the match by a 16ñ13 count
with riding time.
Brandon Zoetewey (San Ramon/De la Salle HS) picked up his first
collegiate dual victory with a 14ñ4 waxing of former CIF champ Cory Borges
at 125 pounds. Zoetewey actually trailed by a 4ñ1 count after the first
period but tied the match with a late takedown in the second period. The
freshman then scored four near falls in the final period to win the match
in fine fashion.
Junior Matt Schumm (Corona/Centennial HS) looked strong in a win over
Garrett Spooner to close out the match at 141 pounds. Spooner, who
appeared to tire as the match wore on, was simply out muscled by Schumm.
The Roadrunner junior has been wrestling well as of late, dominating a
number of wrestlers he has not been expected to beat.
Bakersfield hits the road for a pair of Pacñ10 duals this weekend,
traveling to Stanford on Friday (Jan. 20) and UC Davis on Saturday (Jan.
21). Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Boise State Pulls Out 2019 Win Over Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. " Cal State Bakersfield fought back from an early hole
but ended up falling just short as Boise State edged the Roadrunners 2019
in a Pac10 wrestling dual Thursday night at the Icardo Center.
The Bronco,s K.C. Walsh pulled out a major decision victory in the dual,s
final match, winning the 184pound match over sophomore Brandon Ceremello
(Clovis HS) to give Boise State the narrow win.
Both teams won five matches on the evening but the turning point came in
the first match as the Roadrunners were unable to weigh anyone in at 197
pounds, giving Boise State a quick 60 advantage.
Three straight close decisions followed including an exciting 52 win by
junior Eric Parker (Ramona HS) at heavyweight. Parker held a slim 32 lead
over Andy Patrick in the third period, though Patrick held a riding time
advantage. Parker kept shooting late and finally scored the takedown with
15 seconds left to earn the victory.
The match of the night came at 149 pounds where No. 17 ranked Anthony
Baza (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) battled Tyler Sherfey, a freshman ranked No. 1
in the Pac10. Baza scored a quick takedown just seconds into the match
and extended the lead to 52 after two periods. Sherfey tried to fight
back, scoring a pair of reversals in the final frame, but Baza proved too
much, ultimately winning 96.
The other banner match came at 133 pounds where No. 15 Tommy Vargas
(Highland/Northwestern)"fresh off his title at Midlands"took on the
twotime defending Pac10 champ, Scott Jorgensen. Jorgensen managed to
score an early takedown two minutes into the match and was able to ride
Vargas the entire second half, hanging on for a 41 victory.
Seniors Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) and Christian Arellano
(Moreno Valley/Canyon Springs HS) looked strong in their matches at 165
and 174 pounds, respectively. Busby dominated the Bronco,s Lex Case in a
90 shutout, nearly pinning him twice in the match, but settling for the
major decision.
Arellano had little trouble dispatching Ben Gilliland at 174 pounds,
scoring five threepoint near falls in the opening three minutes for the
technical fall. A number of times Arellano had Gilliland on his back, but
the Bronco,s senior was able to work free and not give Bakersfield the six
points.
Junior Matt Schumm (Corona/Centennial HS) also looked strong, shutting
out Jordan Brock 90 at 141 pounds. Schumm, who improves to 138 overall
this season, ended the match with an impressive 4:13 riding time advantage
in the win.
The Roadrunners drop to 12 overall in dual matches, 11 in the Pac10
while Boise State moves to 41, earning its first win in the conference.
The Broncos also improve to 30 on their Southern California trip with
three duals remaining.
Bakersfield takes a few days off before returning to the mat for a dual
with Big10 Conference power Purdue University on Sunday (Jan. 15) in the
Icardo Center at Noon.

Vargas Wins Title as CSUB Places Ninth at Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. Senior Tommy Vargas (Highland, Calif./Northwestern) made
his return to Northwestern University a strong one, winning the 133 pound
title to lead the Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team to an ninth place
finish at the 43rd Midlands Championship at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston
Thursday and Friday.
Vargas, who earned his degree at Northwestern before transferring to Cal
State Bakersfield to begin graduate work, won his first four matches of
the tournament to earn a spot in the finals. In that match, the unseeded
Vargas scored a late takedown to earn a 97 victory over No. 7 seed Jessee
Sundell of Iowa State.
En route to the finals, Vargas knocked off the top seed Kerry Boumans, a
twotime national champion and Olympic qualifier, and the No. 4 seed
Andrae Herndandez of Indiana by identical 32 scores.
Cal State Bakersfield finished in ninth place in the tournament with 62
points, placing four wrestlers overall. Illinois won the event with 115.5
points followed by Central Michigan.
Senior Anthony Baza (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) was the Roadrunners, second
highest finisher, placing sixth at 149 pounds. Baza, who was recovering
from an injury suffered during the Las Vegas Invitational earlier in the
month, recovered from an early deficit before pinning Brad Stockton of

and junior Brandon Doyle (Ramona HS) led the Cal State Bakersfield
wrestling squad by placing in the top six at the 10th annual Reno

Arellano, who had struggled through the first part of the season at his
new weight of 174 pounds, put together an impressive run after losing in
his second match of the tournament. The No. 14ranked grappler in the
country at 174 pounds, won five straight matches in the consolation
bracket before falling in the third/fourth place match.
The surprise of the night for the Roadrunners came at 149 pounds where
Doyle pulled off a number of upsets and wrestled into the fifth/sixth
place match where he eventually lost a 94 decision to Brandon Gertz of
Minnesota State Mankato.
Junior Matt Schumm (Corona HS) came within one match of placing at 141
pounds, going 62 overall in the difficult field. Senior Brian Busby (San
Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) also just missed out on placing by two matches,
going 32 overall.
Oklahoma State blew away the competition for the second straight year to
win the tournament title, though other team scores were not available at
press time.
Cal State Bakersfield takes a bit of time off for Christmas before
traveling to the prestigious Midlands Championships on Dec. 2829 in

came at the hands of Oregonís State Ty Watterson, who scored the tech fall
over Parker midway though the second period.
The junior was the lone bright spot for the Roadrunners managed to place
28th overall among the 52 teams in the tournament, scoring 26.5 points.
Bakersfield returns home for a rare daytime dual when it faces Pacñ10
foe Portland State on Wednesday (Dec. 14) at noon in the Icardo Center.

announced that Fremont High School standout Greg Crane has signed a
national letter of intent to wrestle for the Roadrunners next season.
Crane, who finished fifth in the CIF State tournament last season after
his second consecutive Central Coast Section title, returns for his senior
season at Fremont as the topranked wrester in the state at 160 pounds
according to thecaliforniawrestler.com. He also is ranked No. 20 in the
country in that weight class in the preseason poll by themat.com.
As a junior, Crane posted an overall record of 417 and earned allarea
firstteam honors by the San Jose Mercury News. In addition, he was a
freestyle and Greco state champion and earned fifth place at Cadet
Nationals in Fargo, ND.
"We are pleased to have a quality wrestler like Greg join the wrestling
program here because he comes form a tough, hardworking high school
wrestling program, said assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator
Mike Mendoza. "We expect big things from him and would like to see him in
the lineup when we host the Pac10 tournament next year.
Crane, who is expected to wrestle at 165 pounds, joins three current
Bakersfield wrestlers to come from Fremont HS where former Roadrunner
Bobby Soto is the co-Head Coach. Most notably is senior Anthony Baza, a
2005 NCAA Division I qualifier who is currently ranked No. 9 nationally at
149 pounds.Alumni Edge Cal State Bakersfield, 20-18

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ó The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team was edged
out by the Roadrunners of the past by a 20ñ18 count in the CSUB alumni
dual Sunday afternoon at the Icardo Center.
The annual match features a number of former Roadrunner stars wrestling
at weights they remembered from high school or earlier pitted against the
current Bakersfield squad.
The outcome was not decided until the final match of the day, which
pitted Roberto Vargas, an AllñAmerican from last seasonís squad, and
junior Matt Schumm (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS). After a close first
period, Vargas, who weighed a bit more than the 141 he wrestled at last
year, outscored Schumm 9ñ0 in the second period en route to a 15ñ2 victory.
Tommy Vargas (Highland, Calif./Northwestern) scored a narrow 3ñ2 victory
over Moses Delfin, an AllñAmerican in 1999 for the íRunners and a current
assistant coach for the squad. Vargas scored the only takedown of the
match in the first period and managed to hold off Delfin for the victory.
The most entertaining match of the evening came at 174 pounds where
Bakersfieldís Christian Arellano (Moreno Valley, Calif./Canyon Springs HS)
edged out Ian Nelms by a count of 8ñ6. The two wrestlers battled back and
forth, combining for four reversals. Arellano managed the final reversal
midway though the final period and held on for the win.
Another close match came just one match later at 184 pounds. Lou
Montano, a former twoñtime NCAA Division I AllñAmerican held a slight 4ñ3 lead with
riding time advantage nearing the end of the match. The Roadrunnersí
Brandon Ceremello (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) was able to score a quick
escape and benefited from a stalling call with a few seconds left to force
overtime. In the extra period, Ceremello was able to overcome at least a
30 pound disadvantage and score the takedown for the victory.
At heavyweight, junior Eric Parker (Ramona, Calif,/Ramona HS) held off a
strong challenge from former threeñtime Pacñ10 placewinner Brian Malavar
for a close 4ñ2 decision. The match was the only one of the night where
the Alumni wrestler was close to making weight.
Former Bakersfield twoñtime AllñAmerican Coby Wright scored a tech fall
victory over freshman Brandon Zoetewey (San Ramon, Calif./De La Salle HS)
at 125 pounds. Wright, who had a 20 pound weight and at least one foot
height advantage, took the freshman down at will, scoring the technical
fall at the end of the match.
Bakersfield returns to action this weekend as the squad travels to the
Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 2ñ3).

Gold Has Little Trouble With Blue in Annual Intersquad Scrimmage

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. " The gold team put on a bit of a clinic Tuesday night
at the annual Cal State Bakersfield wrestling Blue/Gold Intersquad
scrimmage, pulling out the 2112 win over the blue squad at the Icardo
Center.
The meet featured just nine matches with some of the Roadrunners
wrestling up or down a weight as a number of wrestlers have been sick
lately.
A pair of matches at 141 and 149 pounds highlighted the evening, both
coming down to the wire. At 141 pounds, sophomore Jeremy Doyle (Ramona,
Calif./Ramona HS) staked an early lead on junior Matt Schumm (Corona,
Calif./Centennial HS), leading 75 after the first two periods. However,
an escape midway though the period and a takedown near the end gave Schumm
the 87 decision.
The first of two 149 pound matches also proved to be an exciting one
featuring junior Anthony Watson (Waterloo, Iowa/Iowa) and sophomore Daniel
Alejandro (Hesperia, Calif./Sultana HS). With the match tied at four and
time winding down, Alejandro scored a takedown with just 10 seconds left,
but in the process, opened a cut over his eye. Watson took advantage of
the short break, quickly escaping on the restart and taking down Alejandro
with just one second left for the victory.
Watson,s victory was the first of five consecutive wins for the Gold
side. Senior Anthony Baza (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont HS) scored an easy
technical fall victory in the other 149 pound match. He was followed by
sophomore Daniel Atondo (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont HS), who scored a 51
win at 165, senior Christian Arellano (Moreno Valley, Calif./Canyon
Springs HS), who picked up a 70 victory at 174 and freshman Colton
Nichols (Poway, Calif./Poway HS), who registered an 82 decision at 197.
Other winners on the night were junior heavyweight Eric Parker (Ramona,
Calif./Ramona HS), freshman Brandon Zoetewey (San Ramon, Calif./De la
Salle HS) at 125 and senior Tommy Vargas (Highland, Calif./North-western)
at 133.
Bakersfield returns to action on Sunday (Nov. 27) for the alumni meet.
The annual event is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Icardo Center.

at 125, and sophomore Daniel Atondo was seventh at 157.
The tournament did not feature team scoring and individual match results

CSUB Wrestling - Navy Downs Roadrunners 30-13

BAKERSFIELD, Calif." The US Naval Academy wrestling squad won seven of 10
matches en route to a 3013 win over Cal State Bakersfield in the
Roadrunners, season opener Saturday afternoon at the Icardo Center.
Bakersfield put its best foot forward against a solidly conditioned Navy
squad which appeared to be already in midseason form. On the other side,
the Roadrunners put six wrestlers on the mat who were seeing their first
real collegiate action including three freshmen.
Sophomore Jeremy Doyle (Ramona, Calif./Ramona HS) got the Roadrunners on
the board in the second match of the day, scoring a 151 major decision
over Spencer Manley at 141 pounds. Doyle completely dominated the match,
building an 110 lead before Manley was able to escape. Doyle nearly
scored a technical fall in his first match of the season, but was given
just two point for a near fall despite the referee counting to five.
A pair of seniors for the Roadrunners evened the match with wins at 165
and 174 pounds. Brian Busby (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) picked up
six points after Craig Dziewiatkowski was unable to continue after hurting
his ankle early in the first period. Christian Arellano (Moreno Valley,
Calif./Canyon Springs HS), who entered the match ranked No. 14 in the
country, picked up his first win of the season with a hardfought 61
victory over Matt Stolpinski at 174. It was the first match for both at
their new weight classes.
Despite losing their matches, a pair of true freshman looked strong
competing in their first collegiate matches at Bakersfield. Zack Bigboy
(Minneapolis, Minn./Kennedy HS) took his first college start into overtime
before losing 42 to Alex Usztics at 125 pounds. Bigboy had a number of
chances to pick up points with his best chance coming at the end of the
first period. He managed to grab one of Usztics, legs and brought him down
at the edge of the mat, but did not move behind him quick enough as the
period ended before two points could be awarded.
Freshman Colton Nichols (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) looked impressive with a
number of quick shots and strong reversals, but in the end made a few bad
decisions which allowed Andrew Adams the chance to score the fall with
just one second remaining on the clock.
Navy, which defeated Cal State Fullerton by a 296 count on Friday,
downed UC Davis 2313 in the second match Saturday to run its record to
30 on the season. The Roadrunners fall to 01 overall.
Bakersfield returns to the mat on Saturday (Nov. 19) as the squad takes
part in the Cal State Fullerton Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. The
,Runners next home match is the annual Blue/Gold intersquad scrimmage on
Tue., Nov. 22, at 7 p.m.

Sanchez and Ceballos Place Fifth at NCAA Championships

ST. LOUIS ñ Cal State Bakersfield seniors Efren Ceballos (Manteca HS) and
Matt Sanchez (Gilroy/Iowa State) wrapped up their stellar careers by
placing fifth in their respective weight classes in action Saturday at the
2005 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Saavis Center in St.
Louis.
The Roadrunners are in 21st place with 27 points at the completion of
the morning session. Oklahoma State continues to run away with the tournament
with 133 points, giving the Cowboys a 44 point lead of second place
Michigan and will look to extend that lead with five wrestlers in the
finals tonight.
Ceballos, the No. 6 seed at 125 pounds, exacted a measure of revenge,
beating fellow Pacñ10 wrestler and archñrival Vic Moreno of Cal Poly 3ñ2
in the fifth/sixth place match. Moreno, the No. 4 seed, had Ceballos
number, beating him four straight times dating back to last season,
including the Pacñ10 conference championship this season.
The match started out with both wrestlers taking shots but neither having
a real scoring chance. In the second, Moreno chose the down position and
scored a quick escape for the first points of the match. Ceballos
responded with the only takedown of the match just 13 seconds later for a
2ñ1 lead, but Moreno escaped just as quickly to knot the match at two.
Ceballos chose to start the third period on the bottom and scored an
escape 11 seconds into the period, though he was nearly turned on his back
before driving free and taking the 3ñ2 lead. With time running out, Moreno
took a lastñchance shot near the edge of the mat and managed to grab one
of Ceballosí feet, but was unable to wrap up the other as time expired.
Ceballos dropped to the fifth/sixth place match after falling to No. 1
Sam Hazewinkel of Oklahoma 4ñ0. Hazewinkel scored the only points he
needed in the first half, taking down Ceballos 1:30 into the first period
and riding him out. Hazewinkel started in the down position in the second
and Ceballos cut into the riding time advantage, but Hazewinkel escaped
with 1:01 still in his favor. In the third Ceballos continued to attack
hard, but against the top seeded wrestler at his weight, was unable to
score a late takedown and Hazewinkel held on for the 4ñ0 win.
Ceballos closes out his season with a 35ñ9 record and his career with
114 wins, good enough for seventh on the allñtime list at Cal State
Bakersfield.
Sanchez, seeded No. 10 in the tournament at 133 pounds, responded well
after being pinned for the first time this year to score a 10ñ5 win over
No. 11 Evan Sola of North Carolina. Sanchez managed to score the first
takedown of the match with just over a minute remaining but after Sola
escaped, he picked up a takedown of his own to go up 3ñ2 at the end of
one. In the second, Sanchez broke the match open after choosing the bottom
position. After nearly being turned, Sanchez countered with a quick
reversal and managed to turn Sola for two and threeñpoint nearñfalls to
give him a 9ñ3 lead going into the third. Sanchez held on in the third
period, allowing a late takedown but holding on for the win.
Sanchez lost his opener after experiencing what a number of his
opponentmust have felt this season wrestling Minnesotaís Mack Reiter, the No. 3
seed. After an early scramble where Sanchez nearly caught Reiter on his
back, the Golden Gopher wrestler managed to wiggle out and jump on top.
Just a few seconds later, Reiter locked Sanchez and was able to turn him
to his back and score the pin in just 1:18. It was the first time this
season Sanchez lost by pin.

Sanchez closes out his career with 115 wins after going 41ñ8 this
season.

He's just one ahead of Ceballos for sixth on the allñtime win list. His 22
pins are the most of anyone since Stephan Neal in 1999 and his career mark
of 36 is third best allñtime.

Sanchez, Ceballos Place Second at Pac10 Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. Cal State Bakersfield seniors Efren Ceballos
(Manteca HS) and Matt Sanchez (Gilroy/Iowa State) placed second in final
day action at the 2005 Pac10 Wrestling Championships at Mott Gymnasium in
San Luis Obispo.
While the Roadrunners will send four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships,
it was a somewhat disappointing tournament overall as CSUB, ranked No. 4
in the conference before the start of the tournament, finished in seventh
place with 67 team points.
Arizona State won its 15th Pac-10 title with 106 points with Boise State
finishing second with 93 points and Oregon sneaking into third place with
88 points.
Ceballos, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, could not muster any offense
in his championship match with No. 1 seed Vic Moreno of host Cal Poly.
Ceballos allowed two takedowns in the first period and managed to score an
escape early in the second to pull within two, but that would be all as
Moreno picked up another takedown and held on for the 92 win.
Sanchez, the top seed in the tournament, was upset in his bid for a
conference championship, losing 96 to No. 2 seed Scott Jorgensen of Boise
State. Sanchez took a 32 lead in the second period, scoring an escape
from the down position to lead 32. Near the end of the period Jorgensen
won a back and for battle with a takedown with five seconds left. It
appeared Sanchez picked up a reverse just as the period ended which would
have given him a 54 lead, but after a lengthy delay, the reversal was
taken away.
Jorgensen then took control of the match, scoring two more takedowns over
a desperate Sanchez. The loss was only his second loss in his last 22
matches"both to Jorgensen.
Earlier in the day, Anthony Baza (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) earned his second
straight trip to the NCAA tournament, placing third with a 32 decision
over No. 3 Jeff Owens of Cal Poly. Baza, the No. 5 seed, pulled off a big
upset to make his way to the consolation final, beating No. 2 seed Pat
Williams of Arizona State 86. Baza placed fourth at the Pac10
Championships, earning a wildcard into the NCAA tournament last season.
Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) finished fourth at 157 pounds,
losing 165 to No. 3 seed Tony Hook of Oregon State. Busby wrestled into
the third/fourth place match with a 60 decision over Boise State,s Lex
Case, the No. 6 seed. With his performance, Busby was named as a fifth
alternate to the NCAA tournament.
At 141 pounds, No. 4 seed Roberto Vargas (Highland/Pacific HS) earned
fifth place with a 63 win over No. 5 seed Tony Woods of Oregon. Earlier
in the day, he lost another heartbreaking 31 decision, allowing a
takedown in overtime to Jeff Bristol of UC Davis. Despite his fifth place
finish, Vargas proved he deserved a trip to the NCAA tournament with a
0:56 pin of the fourth place finisher Tim Norman of Oregon State in a
wrestleoff. The decisive win convinced the committee to award him with
one of 10 wildcards.
Heavyweight Eric Parker (Ramona HS) was the final placewinner for Cal
State Bakersfield, finishing in sixth place. The sophomore dropped a pair
of matches today, losing 61 to No. 2 seed Ty Watterson of Oregon State
and suffering a pin at the hands of Oregon,s Cody Parker.
Defending Pac10 and NCAA champion Matt Gentry of Stanford was upset by
Arizona State,s Brian Stith 31 in the championship match at 157 pounds.
It was just Gentry,s second loss of the season
Ceballos, Sanchez, Baza and Vargas will wrestle at the 2005 NCAA Division
I Wrestling National Championships March 1719 at the Saavis Center in St.
Louis, Missouri.

Baza Places Third, Busby Fourth In Consolation Finals at Pac10 Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. Cal State Bakersfield junior Anthony Baza
(Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) earned his second straight trip to the NCAA
Wrestling National Championships with a 32 win in the morning session of
final day action at the 2005 Pac10 Wrestling Championships at Mott
Gymnasium in San Luis Obispo.
The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the NCAA
Tournament with an additional 10 wild card wrestlers also earning a spot.
Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) finished the tournament in fourth
place and is in good position to earn a wildcard spot. Roberto Vargas
(Highland/Pacific HS) finished fifth at 141 pounds and heavyweight Eric
Parker (Ramona HS) placed sixth.
The Roadrunners, who were dropped to seventh place overnight after a
scoring error was discovered, remained there after the morning session
with 67 points. Arizona State continues to lead with 102 points followed
by Boise State with 91 points, UC Davis with 82 and Oregon with 81.
Baza, the No. 5 seed in the tournament at 149 pounds, held on for a
thrilling win over No. 3 seed Jeff Owens of Cal Poly. The match didn,t
start out well as Baza was taken down by Owens after failing to flip him
early in the first. But Baza escaped and scored an additional escape point
to tie the score top open the second. In the third period all Owens needed
to do was pick up an escape point as he started in the down position, but
Baza refused to let him go, riding him the entire period to win the match.
Baza opened the day with an 86 upset of the No. 2 seed Pat Williams of
Arizona State. After Williams score a takedown to tie the score with 46
seconds left in the third period, he cut Baza lose quickly despite the
fact that no one had a riding time advantage. Baza quickly took advantage
of the situation and scored a take down with 32 seconds left and held on
for the 86 win.
Busby, seeded fourth at 157 pounds, advanced to the third/fourth place
match with a convincing 60 victory over Lex Case of Boise State. Busby
was in control from the start, taking down Case just 1:04 into the match
and riding him for nearly the entire remainder of the match. In his final
match, though, Busby ran into a tough wrestler in No. 3 seed Tony Hook,
who punched his ticket with a 165 major decision.
Roberto Vargas (Highland/Pacific HS) once again suffered a tough loss,
dropping to the fifth/sixth place match with a 31 overtime loss to Jeff
Bristol of UC Davis. Vargas, the No. 4 seed, wrestled to a scoreless first
period for the third time in as many tournament matches. Each wrestler
earned an escape point to knot the score at one. In overtime, Vargas made
a quick shot at Bristol, but was unable to convert and the Aggie wrestler
jumped on the mistake to win the match with a takedown of his own.
Vargas, fifth/sixth place match was a rematch of an early tournament win
over Skyler Woods of Oregon, won by Vargas 51. The second matchup was
more of the same with a closer outcome as Vargas held on for a 63 win. He
was in control most of the match, scoring a takedown in the third to put
the match away.
Vargas improved his chances of making the NCAA tournament by pinning
fourth place finisher Tim Norman of Oregon State in a seeding only
wrestleoff. Vargas looked very impressive, recording the takedown 30
seconds in and getting the pin at 0:56.
Heavyweight Eric Parker, seeded fourth, dropped to the fifth/sixth match
with a 133 loss to No. 3 seed Eric Smith. In his final match of the
tournament, Cody Parker scored a takedown and managed to flip Eric early,
scoring a pin at 1:16.
Seniors Efren Ceballos (Manteca HS) and Matt Sanchez (Gilroy/Iowa State)
wrestle in the championship matches at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively,
beginning at 6:00 p.m. tonight.
