Heading East is Best for West Oak Ridge Grad Travels East to Find New Wrestling HomeThe 2009 graduate of Oak Ridge High had his future set a year ago at this time with a full scholarship to UC Davis on the books, thanks to an outstanding high school wrestling career, which included two trips to the state wrestling meet and second and fourth-place finishes. West was ranked third in the nation in his weight class during his junior year. Three separated ribs during his senior season ended it prematurely.
In the middle of April, however, West, 19, had the wrestling mat pulled out from underneath him, literally, when Davis administration decided to cut the wrestling program.
"I wasn't prepared for that," West said. "Davis blind-sided us because they had told us that the wrestling program was safe. I got really upset and emotionally just broke down. It was a terrible day."
For a short while, the normally motivated West could hardly bring himself to do anything. He couldn't even think about his future, but knew he didn't want to leave Davis, hoping something would be worked out. Soon, though, other college coaches began calling.
"It was rough because they cut us a week after the recruiting season so a lot of schools already had given out their scholarships," West said. "Only a small portion of us (at Davis) got recruited."
With wrestling being cut from several California schools, West said he was looking to pick a new school out of state, among which were Utah Valley, Northern Colorado, Virginia, Wisconsin and Appalachian State.
"California is not a safe place to be on a wrestling team so I wanted to look elsewhere," West said. "I took my first trip to Utah Valley in May and had a great feeling about the place and didn't visit anywhere else. The further East you go, you get a lot more respect for wrestlers. Utah Valley has 30,000 students and they don't have a football team. It's a wrestling school and I'm excited about it."
West, who is studying business, is thrilled to have the opportunity to wrestle for Utah Valley, a Division I school located in Orem, Utah, about 40 minutes south of Salt Lake City.
Utah Valley's Coach, Greg Williams, told West that he would let him go back to Davis if the school reinstates the wrestling program, but West isn't even thinking about that and doesn't want to.
"I hope that's a decision I never have to make," West said.
In meantime, West continues to work out in preparation for his first collegiate season of competition, as last year at Davis he was a red-shirt freshman, meaning he practiced with the team but didn't compete and thus didn't lose a year of eligibility. Though he didn't compete, West learned a lot and improved as a wrestler, which is why he's got high goals for the upcoming season.
"I picked up a lot last year and am a much-better wrestler than I've ever been," said West, who will compete in the 141-pound weight class this season. "My goal is to be a national champion this season. That's a big goal, but I have no reason to set it any lower. I know what it takes to do that job."
West said he's grateful to have come through the wrestling program at Oak Ridge High, as well as the El Dorado Hills Wrestling Club, saying the two organization have always given him great support.

Executive Committee to Save Wrestling
Letter Outline to--UC. Davis Admin.-BRING BACK WRESTLING!!!
Folks-
Here is a suggested letter outline for us to use- For those of you that don't know me-
I've been involved with the National Wrestling Coaches Wrestling Association for
the last 10 years in preserving collegiate wrestling.
Have been successful in preventing San Francisco State from dropping their program back in 2004- Amongst
other programs-
So you can call me a veteran "organizer".
I'm also a coach out here at El Molno High School
Here is an outline for what you want to put in your letter. Needs to go to the Chancellors attention as the "buck" start and stops with her!
We will need to do the sme with State UC Cancellor- Charles Reed too!
===============================================================================================================================
Dear Chancellor-
I am equally shocked and dismayed by the University's decision to eliminate our wrestling program. Especially in light of the fact that Coach Zalesky was
repeatedly given assurances that both the UC Davis wrestling and football programs were going to be "safe" in the event of impending program cuts!!
I duly request that you provide me with the "criteria" that was used in your decision to eliminate wrestling on the Davis campus
I am certainly understanding of the fact the the California State budget is in a dire situation. And as a taxpayer I am certainly aware that
harsh steps need to occur. However- my issue with you is not about charity here- it is about asking you to give UC Davis wrestling the opportunity
to be self sustaining & self supporting.UC Davis Wrestling has a wide alumni base coupled with strong wrestling community support that will help to "pay the way" for
our wrestling program. Unfortunately- you did not give us the courtesy to explore that strategy. That is the stated purpose of my letter to you today.
I am requesting that you grant a 90 day "cooling off" period to allow UC Davis wrestling to raise it's own funds & be self supporting!!.
UC Fullerton has recently done this quite successfully.
You need to alow the same process here. Once again- I am needing to better understand what the "criteria" was used at UC Davis
that led to the decision to drop wrestling?
Additionally- I believe that you should re-examine the following facts as concern our UC Davis wrestling program.
Fact:
UC Davis wrestling produced one of our institutions very first National Champions in wrestler Derek Moore just 3 years ago!
UC Davis wrestling has had one of the better attendance ratios of any sport on campus!!
UC Davis Wrestling has had some of the best fund raising activities of any sport on campus!!!
UC Davis Wrestling has one of the most active alumni groups on campus!!!!
UC Davis Wrestling has the opportunity to continue to serve some of the over 25,000.00+ California state high school wrestlers!!!!!
Coach Zalaesky has done well at keeping the academic integrity of his student athletes up to UC Davis standards!!!!!!
Additionally- your wrestling program has strongly supported the participation of the very large California Latino American population.
Where do these minority student athletes now go for their opportunities to better themselves with a quality education?
And wrestling as a sport does not require the athlete to be the largest , fastest or richest kid on campus.
Student athletes of all sizes and ethnicities can participate.
As the UC mission statement is to provide a broad base of opportunities to the population of California-
it is part of your duty to let such a sport to continue to exist.
Other food for thought is why have the other sports on campus NOT been asked to ALSO "share in the pain" of the budget cuts?
What can't we examine making cuts across the table instead of just singling out just a handful of sports like wrestling?
Is it asking too much to ask other UC Davis programs to dilute a few of their scholarships and expenses so others may still exist?
How about requiring all sports on campus to fund raise at least 50% or more of their needed annual budgets?
I sincerely believe what I am asking from you here is far from unreasonable. Please let wrestling have time to raise it's own funds.
WE CAN and WILL do it! Please also work to make sure your other teams are required to raise funds to continue their operations too.
Aggressive fundraising along within EQUALLY spreading the economic RESPONSIBILTY amongst all
UC Davis athletic programs is empowerment to you for being equitable within a publically funded institution!
Please contact me immeditely so I can assist in this process. WE NEED TO KEEP WRESTLING AT UC DAVIS!!
Sincerely-

UC Davis to Drop Four Teams Due to Financial Crisis
The University of California, Davis, will discontinue four of its 27
intercollegiate sports, and its athletics department will absorb
another $400,000 in annual operational cuts as the campus continues
to struggle through an unprecedented financial crisis.
Women's rowing, men's wrestling, men's swimming and diving, and men's
indoor track and field will be discontinued as of July 1. The loss of
the teams directly affects 73 female student-athletes and 80 male
student-athletes and the coaching staffs.
Early Friday morning, Director of Athletics Greg Warzecka informed
the coaches of the discontinued teams, and the department sent
e-mails to all student-athletes on active rosters.
At a news conference later, Fred Wood, vice chancellor for Student
Affairs, said the cuts have a human toll. "What's happening here
today," Wood said, "is a very real, very significant and very
personal impact of the budget crisis in California and the resulting
financial position of UC Davis.
"Our Aggie coaches and student-athletes are proud, talented and
dedicated," he added. "Today, they are in mourning for teams and what
those losses mean to them as individuals."
Budget crisis
Chancellor Linda Katehi said that dropping athletics teams and losing
opportunities for student-athletes is regrettable but necessary. "The
UC Davis community is confronting enormous financial challenges," she
said.
"During my brief tenure as chancellor, I have come to appreciate the
rich and unique athletic traditions at UC Davis," Katehi wrote in
accepting the recommendations of Wood and Warzecka to adopt the plan
that drops the four sports. "I believe this budget model provides the
best means of preserving and enhancing these athletic traditions for
the future."
In February, Katehi and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Enrique
Lavernia assigned $36 million in budget reductions campuswide for
2010-11, including a $1.79 million cut to Intercollegiate Athletics.
With associated benefits and additional reductions, the cut amounts
to about $2.4 million.
Athletics budget plan
At the news conference, Warzecka said the painful cuts to the teams
would reduce costs by a little more than $5 million over the next
five years.
Over the past few years, Intercollegiate Athletics has already made
across-the-board reductions to its sports and administrative unit
budgets. Employees are subject to furloughs, and positions have been
lost. Athletics has reduced the funding for facility repairs and
renovations, cut team and administrative travel, and more. When the
fiscal year ends in June, the department will have an accrued deficit
of $1.4 million.
Warzecka said the new budget plan would require the department to
generate higher levels of revenue and gifts. Overall, the plan would
eliminate the $1.4 million deficit and return the department to
fiscal solvency in three to five years.
Help for student-athletes
The welfare of student-athletes has been front and center in the
discussions and decision-making about the cuts, Wood said.
For student-athletes of discontinued sports who choose to continue
their studies at UC Davis, the campus will continue their annual
grants-in-aid as they make "normal" progress toward their degree. At
UC Davis, in 2009-10 full grants-in-aid are worth $21,513
Also, UC Davis is making the announcement now so that current and
prospective student-athletes can make their choices about where to
study and compete in the future. The National Letter of Intent
signing period for some sports -- including swimming and diving, and
wrestling -- began Wednesday.
UC Davis also will assist student-athletes who choose to continue
their athletic careers at other institutions. On behalf of UC Davis,
the Big West Conference is issuing a blanket contact release that
will allow any institution to contact affected student-athletes
regarding possible transfer. UC Davis' Compliance Services and
Student-Athlete Academic Services will provide information and other
assistance to student-athletes.
How the decision was made
Warzecka said the planning had to take in consideration the
requirements of Title IX, the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), athletic conferences, student referenda and more.
He and his staff evaluated more than 20 models for reaching fiscal
solvency. They met with coaches, student-athletes and other internal
constituencies. He also consulted with the Campus Union and
Recreation Board, which oversees funding from student initiatives,
and the Athletics Administrative Advisory Committee.
Last month, Wood, the Student Affairs vice chancellor, appointed an
eight-member team of campus faculty and staff to review budget
proposals from Intercollegiate Athletics and assist and advise Wood
on those budget recommendations.
Title IX
Wendi Delmendo, compliance director for UC Davis, said the approved
budget plan meets the university's requirements under Title IX in
regard to the ratio between undergraduate enrollment and
participation opportunities by gender. The plan also will meet the
requirements under Title IX pertaining to distribution of
grants-in-aid and all other measures of compliance.
Intercollegiate teams
UC Davis will continue to offer 23 varsity sports, including 14
women's and nine men's teams. Even with cuts, the UC Davis program
offers more than the average of 18 among NCAA Division I schools.
The women's teams are basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf,
gymnastics, indoor track and field, lacrosse, outdoor track and
field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball and
water polo. The nine men's sports are baseball, basketball, cross
country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, outdoor track and field, and
water polo.
The team most recently discontinued was men's gymnastics in 1987.
Excluding the rosters of the four sports that are being discontinued,
there are 556 student-athletes and 619 roster opportunities (because
some students compete in more than one sport).
University budget
For the past two years, UC Davis has been in an unprecedented fiscal
crisis as it tries to resolve shortfalls totaling more than $150
million, or 25 percent, of its general fund budget of $590 million as
of July 1, 2008. For 2010-11, the campus faces an additional
shortfall of $38 million to $78 million, depending on the outcome of
the governor's budget proposal.
Most UC Davis employees have been subject to furloughs since Sept. 1.
More than 300 full-time employees have been laid off this year and
last year, and about 400 positions have been eliminated through
attrition in this same period.
The university has dropped classes or sections in English
composition, foreign languages and other programs, and some class
sizes have been increased. Access hours for student services have
also been reduced.
This year, the UC Board of Regents imposed a $586 mid-year increase
in the annual systemwide educational fee. For 2010-11, the systemwide
educational fee will increase to $3,134 a quarter, or 36.5 percent
more than students paid for fall 2009. For the 2010 fall quarter, a
UC Davis undergraduate will pay an estimated $4,360, which includes
campus-based fees.

UC Davis Concludes Action at NCAA Championships
DAVIS, Calif. - Brandon Low, Barrett Abel and Ricky Alcala were eliminated from the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Thursday at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb.
At 133 pounds, Brandon Low opened the tournament with a narrow first round loss to 12th--seeded Steve Mytych of Drexel. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the match, Low found himself on the losing end of a 3-2 decision and attempted a last second takedown for the win, but was unable to complete the move before time ran out.
Low would face 11th-seeded Scotti Sentes of Central Michigan in the wrestleback second round, but fell to Sentes by an 8-3 decision.
Barrett Abel, seeded tenth at 149 pounds, was upset in the first round by Central Michigan’s Anthony D’Alie by a 5-2 decision. Abel then dropped a 14-9 decision to Michigan State’s David Cheza in the third round of the wrestlebacks.
In the heavyweight bracket, Ricky Alcala dropped to the wrestleback rounds after a narrow 3-2 loss to Navy’s Scott Steele, the 12th-seed. Alcala then met fellow Pac-10 opponent Clayton Jack of Oregon State, but suffered a second close loss after Jack held on to a 2-1 decision.
UC Davis concludes the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 3-12 and a Pac-10 record of 1-6. The Aggies finished seventh at the 2010 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships with Barrett Abel winning the 149-pound championship. The title was the first for UC Davis since the 2007 season.

UC Davis' Barrett Abel Wins Pac-10 Title, Brandon Low Second
DAVIS, Calif. - Barrett Abel won UC Davis' first Pac-10 individual title since 2007 after earning a 12-9 decision over Cal Poly's Nick Fisher at 149 pounds Saturday at the 2010 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships in Davis, Calif.
"It feels great," said Abel. "I want to keep looking ahead to prepare for the NCAA Championships so I'm sure after the season is completely over it will really sink in, but it definitely feels good. There's still a lot of work left to do to get ready for NCAAs so I want to keep focusing on that but this feels great."
Brandon Low was narrowly beaten by Cal Poly's Boris Novachkov at 133 pounds to finish second. Low used a takedown with less than 30 seconds left to tie the score at three points apiece, but Novachkov earned a bonus point for amassing over two minutes of riding time to take the 4-3 decision.
"I felt like I came out decently aggressive," said Low. I could have been more aggressive. He was able to ride me, stay on top, stay heavy, keep his weight on me and wear me out. He was smart about things so I was just trying to keep pushing back. I felt like I was pushing the action better than he was. I have three weeks off now to let my body rest up now and get it feeling good again before NCAAs."
UC Davis also earned a third-place finish from Ricky Alcala at 285. Alcala defeated Kurt Klimek of Cal State Fullerton by a 6-1 decision.
Abel, Low and Alcala all earned automatic qualifying spots to the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Neb.
Bryan Osuna was seventh at 141 pounds while Trevor Machado-Ching finished sixth at 157. Abe Otrambo was sixth at 197.
Oregon State won its 18th team title, its first since 2007, with 127.0 total points. Boise State was second with 125.0 points. UC Davis finished seventh with 79.0 points.
The NCAA Championships will be held March 18-20, 2010.

Stanford Rallies to Edge UC Davis, 20-19
DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis earned a forfeit at 285 and a major decision at 157, but Stanford rallied to clinch a 20-19 victory Saturday in a Pac-10 matchup at Hickey Gym in Davis, Calif. With the loss, UC Davis is now 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10 while Stanford improves to 9-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Pac-10.
Stanford jumped to a quick start with freshman Ryan Mango pinning UC Davis' Chris Armendariz at the 1:11 mark of the 125 pound matchup.
Brandon Low, ranked 15th nationally, would get UC Davis back on the board with a 7-3 decision over Justin Paulsen at 133. Low dominated the second half with an escape and a takedown to take a 4-2 lead, then used a takedown with only one second remaining for the win. With over a minute of riding time, Low earned an additional bonus point and picked up UC Davis' first three points.
Bryan Osuna continued the Aggie win streak with a 7-2 decision at 141 pounds. He battled Bret Baumbach throughout the first period and took a 2-1 lead going into next round. Osuna then had takedowns in the second and third period plus an additional point for over three minutes of riding time to get the win. UC Davis equalized the score at 6 points apiece going into the 149 pound matchup.
15th-ranked Barrett Abel found himself in a battle with Stanford's Tyler Parker with the two going scoreless through the first two periods. Abel was first on the board with an escape, then followed that with a takedown to go up 3-0. Parker was unable to get a move of his own off and Abel took an additional point for over three minutes of riding time to get the 3-0 decision.
Trevor Machado-Ching came out strong for the Aggies in his 157 pound matchup against Mike Kent. Machado-Ching had three takedowns in the first period and added two more in the second period to take an 11-4 lead going into the final period. Machado-Ching continued to dominate and had a 17-7 major decision at the end of the bout, then earned an extra point for nearly two minutes of riding time. The four points he earned for UC Davis gave the Aggies a 13-6 lead.
Stanford, however, won the next four bouts and had major decisions at 184 and 197 to clinch the win. Zack Giesen, ranked 12th nationally took a 17-6 major decision over Rory McBryde at 184 to give the Cardinal a three-point advantage.
With the match on the line, UC Davis' Shawn Hoehne held Richard Kessler to a decision, however Kessler earned an additional point for riding time to bring the score to a 9-1 major decision and got the Cardinal four extra points.
UC Davis earned an extra six points from a forfeit at 285, however it was not enough to overcome the Stanford rally.
The Aggies close out the regular season with Pac-10 dual matches at Cal Poly Feb. 12 and Cal State Bakersfield Feb. 13. Friday's match against the Mustangs will begin at 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's is set for a 7:00 p.m. start time.

Abel Lifts UC Davis to Victory Over San Francisco State
15th-ranked Barrett Abel pins Josh Nolan to give Aggies 24-22 win
DAVIS, Calif. - 15th-ranked Barrett Abel pinned Josh Nolan at the 4:16 mark of the 149 pound matchup to lift UC Davis to a 24-22 victory over San Francisco State at The Pavilion Friday. With the win, the Aggies improve to 3-9 overall and remain at 1-3 in Pac-10 action while San Francisco State is 4-9 overall and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Trevor Machado-Ching and Joey Wilson gave the Aggies an early advantage with wins at 157 and 165, respectively. Machado-Ching pinned Kyle Cooper at the 4:15 mark after building a 7-1 lead in the second period while Wilson maintained a strong lead over Ian Wrenn for the duration of his matchup.
Despite only leading 2-0 at the end of the first period, Wilson outscored Wrenn 9-1 in the second period and went on to a 19-5 lead at the end of the third period. He then earned an additional point for over two minutes of riding time for a final score of 20-5. After the two victories, UC Davis was up 11-0 on San Francisco State.
The Gators, however, would quickly take the lead back with back-to-back pins at 174 pounds and 184 pounds. At 174 pounds, UC Davis' Alex Darkhovsky stayed close with San Francisco State's Gene Choi, but Choi claimed six points for the Gators after pinning Darkhovsky at the 6:17 mark.
At 184 pounds, Rory McBryde fell to Zach Jimenez when Jimenez pinned the UC Davis sophomore at the 3:32 mark, giving San Francisco State the 12-11 advantage.
Freshman Shawn Hoehne maintained a steady pace with Vince Bordi at 197 pounds, but saw Bordi pull away in the third period. After taking a 5-0 lead at the end of the second period, Bordi used two additional takedowns in the third period to extend his lead to 11-3. After receiving an additional point for over a minute of riding time, Bordi's 12-3 major decision pushed the Gators' lead to 16-11.
Ricky Alcala would bring the Aggies back to within striking distance with a major decision of his own against Steve Franklin at 285. Alcala started strong against Franklin and owned a 7-3 lead at the end of the second period. Alcala earned two more takedowns for an 11-4 lead and, with over three minutes of riding time, earned an additional point for the 12-4 major decision to bring UC Davis within one.
At 125 pounds, Ricky Bernal contributed three more points to the Gators with a 12-7 decision over Chris Armendariz. San Francisco State would lead 19-15 entering the 133 pound matchup.
Brandon Low, ranked 15th nationally, pulled out a decision over Naveed Bagheri, ranked third nationally in Division II, at 133 pounds with a takedown with only 11 seconds remaining. The two battled back and forth with Low establishing a 6-5 lead at the end of the second period. Bagheri used an escape to tie the score at six with under a minute to go in the bout, but Low's two-point takedown in the final seconds of the third period gave him the 8-6 win.
With UC Davis down only one point, Bryan Osuna would face off against Ben Lockett, ranked fourth in the nation in Division II, at 141 pounds. With the score tied at two points apiece at the end of the second period, Lockett used an escape and a takedown to go up 5-2 over Osuna. The UC Davis senior, however, pulled within two points with an escape of his own with over a minute remaining. Lockett used a takedown with only 15 seconds remaining to seal a 7-3 win and to give San Francisco State a 22-18 lead going into the final matchup.
