Cal State Fullerton Wrestlers Face Gymnast in Trivia Challenge
Do you know what a tsukahara is? How many weight classes are there in collegiate wrestling? In preparation of this week's Beauty and the Beast competition at Titan Gym, we sat down with members of the Cal State Fullerton wrestling and gymnastics teams to see just how much they knew about each other's sport in a little spot we like to call the "Beauty and the Beast IQ Challenge.
To view the Beauty and the Beast IQ Challenge, go to:
http://vimeo.com/18766013
In the video, gymnasts Megan Farris, Vanessa Klass and Leah Housman and wrestlers Andre Gonzalez, Kurt Klimek and Mark Savalle attempt to answer questions about the other's sport, with bragging rights on the line.
Beauty and the Beast is a combined event that features simultaneous competitions by both the Titan wrestlers and gymnasts on the same floor. This year's Beauty and the Beast event takes place this Friday night, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. in Titan Gym.
Come out and support the Titans in this special 2-for-1 event. The wrestlers will be taking on Air Force while the gymnasts open up their 2011 campaign by hosting UC Davis.
Results from the Tripleheader at Cal State Fullerton
No. 24-ranked (NWCA) Wyoming easily won a pair of victories Sunday afternoon in a collegiate wrestling tripleheader of dual meets at Cal State Fullerton.
The Cowboys beat San Francisco State, 33-9, and host Cal State Fullerton, 41-6, to improve to 6-4 on the season. Fullerton later defeated San Francisco State, 34-8, for its first win of the year in six meets while the Gators’ losses dropped the Div. II program to 2-6 overall.
Wyoming actually lost only two matches on the mat. Joe O’Farrell, normally a 197-pounder, filled in at heavyweight and lost to SFSU’s Anthony Gonzalez, 4-3, and was pinned by Fullerton’s Kurt Klimek. The only other points the Cowboys allowed came at 157 pounds against SFSU when Jimmy Belleville was disqualified for an illegal move which injured the Gators’ Josh Nolan to the extent he could not continue.
The most exciting match of the day occurred at 174 between Fullerton’s Mark Savalle and San Francisco State’s Gene Choi.
Savalle took an early lead, lost it, tied the match at 6-6 with a takedown only for Choi to score a quick reversal. For an 8-6 lead. But with about 20 seconds left, Savalle got a point for too many cautions on Choi and then scored a reversal for a 9-8 lead that became a 10-8 decision with riding time.
Fullerton concludes its home season Friday night at 6 p.m. vs. Air Force in a simultaneous “Beauty and the Beast” event that also will feature the CSF women’s gymnastics team vs. UC Davis.

High School Wrestling Participation By State 2009-2010
California 27,469 High School Wrestlers but only 7 four year schools to attend in California.
Only 19 Junior colleges left in California.
Athletics: The other half of education. Included in article in email below.
Leaders come from athletics.
Especially wrestling…..
Dennis Hastert,
Donald Rumsfield,
Billy Baldwin
More Fortune 500 CEO's have wrestled than participated in any other sport (58% of them have wrestled!)
Opportunities for Hispanics need to be expanded.
President Gordon is on a national committee to expand opportunities for Hispanics as athletes, coaches and administrators.
He has not shown any support for athletics to date at Cal State Fullerton.
Encourage his involvement.
Athletics bring community and connection to a commuter campus. CSUF has 30,000+ students. Most are commuters. Improving student life on campus comes through the Recreation Center, Athletics and Clubs.Wrestling has represented Cal State Fullerton at the NCAA Tournament every year for the past 26 years.
We are relatively inexpensive for the school.
$2,300 per athlete for expenses compared to $15,000 plus for Men's Basketball.
Thirty-Five wrestlers compared to 13 basketball players.
UC Davis last of UC system schools with wrestling:
There were previously four UC campuses that offered wrestling, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Davis. All have now been eliminated.
There are over 27,000 student-athletes in California high schools that participate in wrestling, or 10% of all the high school wrestlers in the nation.
Wrestling is the 6th largest high school sport in California and the nation,
and the largest of the so-called "minor" sports.
Wrestling in California high schools and colleges has a very high minority participation.
Wrestling offers participation and scholarship opportunities for scholar-athletes of ALL size and skill to participate.
Wrestling has the lowest percentage of collegiate participation and scholarship opportunities of any sport in the state, and none in the UC system.
Wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the state, with more than a 25% increase since the 2002-2003.
Student-athletes of every sport, many far smaller than wrestling, have many more opportunities in the UC system than wrestlers.
Student-athletes of some sports eliminated by UC Davis have many places in the UC system to transfer to and still participate in their sport. Wrestlers do not.
Participation Rates compared to other states and sports (2009-2010).
CSUF is one of only two four years schools ( Cal Baptist University- NAIA) with wrestling south of the Tehachapi Mts.
We represent 18 million people in Southern California.
There are 374 high schools with wrestling with in a 2.5 hours radius of Cal State Fullerton.
The NCAA and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities have entered a strategic partnership to increase the number of Hispanics involved in collegiate sports at all levels as players, coaches and athletic administrators, including NCAA professional staff.
An advisory working group including five presidents from five NCAA member institutions has been formed:
Ricardo R. Fernandez, Lehman College
Mildred Garcia, California State University, Dominguez Hills
Milton A. Gordon, California State University, Fullerton
Kimberly Cline, Mercy College
Stephen M. Jordan, Metropolitan State College of Denver
Also part of the group are NCAA staff members
Bernard W. Franklin, executive vice president, membership and student-athlete affairs,
Kim Ford, director of office of diversity and inclusion.
The partnership is an outgrowth of a June meeting of NCAA Division II Hispanic-Serving Institution presidents and chancellors.
The effort has been broadened to include all NCAA divisions.

Cal State Fullerton Win Pair of CBU Championships
Senior Adin Duenas and freshman Chaste Harrell won championships Saturday to highlight the performances of Cal State Fullerton wrestlers at the third annual Cal Baptist Open.
Competing as the Titan Wrestling Club, Fullerton wrestlers also picked up second place finishes at 149 (Charles Chavez), at 157 (Ryan Zumwalt) and 174 (Mark Savalle); third-place finishes at 165 (Clayton Schuelke) and 197 (Kyle Bergstedt); and fourth-place efforts at 133 (Gabe Brown) and 141 (Henry Yorba).
Duenas, the defending Pac-10 champion at 141 pounds, roared through the 149-pound field. He scored technical falls over Nick Barton of Bakersfield College (15-0) and Brock Remington of Rio Hondo (16-1) before settling for a lopsided major decision (24-11) over Josh Chang of Embry Riddle. Chavez won his three bouts at 149 before forfeiting the title match to Duenas.
Harrell went 4-0 in the 184-pound bracket. He opened with a pin of Brian Meave of Rio Hondo in 2:20 and then reeled off three consecutive decisions -- 4-2 over Jesus Chavez (unattached), 10-3 over Stephan Hampton of Cal Poly and 7-4 over Jiro Chavez (unattached) in the title match.
The Titans next compete in the Embry Riddle Open in Prescott, Arizona, on Nov. 6.

Cal State Fullerton Wrestling Gets Reprieve
Cal State Fullerton wrestling has hope for a future.
The sport, designated last week for termination at the end of the 2010-11 season, has been given a reprieve to continue fund-raising efforts to keep the program competing. A combination of positive reaction to the "finality" of last week's announcement and some accounting adjustments renewed hope that approximately $450,000 can be raised by next Spring to fund the program for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.
"The university will allow the wrestling program to use existing pledges toward future seasons to cover the shortfall that was created when the program missed its August goal of approximately $196,000 in the bank to fund the 2010-11 season," said Director of Athletics Brian Quinn. "All new money coming in must first go to covering this year's shortfall."
Fullerton competes in the hybrid Pac-10 for wrestling against Arizona State, Boise State, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Oregon State and Stanford. The season begins on Nov. 19 with a home meet vs. Stanford.
Cal State Fullerton Wrestling Program to be Terminated at End of 2010-11 Season
Cal State Fullerton today announced that its intercollegiate wrestling program will be terminated at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.
The action was considered at the end of the 2009-10 season, but the program was given the opportunity to continue operating if it could fund its own annual budget. An extensive fund-raising campaign for 2010-11 came up short of the $196,145 cash deposited goal by the Aug. 2 deadline.
All eight pre-existing scholarships will be honored until the student-athletes' eligibility would have expired. Wrestlers who wish to transfer to other schools will be given blanket releases.
"It is with great sadness that we must eliminate a great Olympic sport that has a long history at Cal State Fullerton," said Director of Athletics Brian Quinn. "Due to severe budget cuts in the CSU system and the large increases in the costs of an athletic scholarship, we have not replaced full-time staff members who have left and have found it necessary to look at eliminating programs.
"Unfortunately, we just do not have the resources to continue a sport that is not sponsored by the Big West Conference. Fullerton and Cal Poly are the only Big West schools sponsoring wrestling and must compete in the Pac-10 Conference. Wrestling has seen dramatic reductions in its numbers across the country. There are only seven schools in California still competing in wrestling and only a handful of others west of the Rockies. Oregon, Fresno State, Portland State and UC Davis all found it necessary to drop the sport in the past few years and Arizona State and Cal State Bakersfield's programs have also been in jeopardy. We kept trying to find ways to continue the sport, even after numerous recommendations that we needed to stop funding the program.
"We want to thank Coaches Dan Hicks and Risto Marttinen for their dedication and hard work for the student-athletes. We also want to thank our many donors for their support in helping keep the program over the past few years."
Wrestling dates to 1968 at Cal State Fullerton. Hicks, who arrived from Oregon State in 2002-03, is only the fourth head coach in the program's history. The Titans never won a team championship but boast 31 conference champions, 12 Div. I and 3 Div. II All-Americans and 87 NCAA Div. I national qualifiers including at least one in each of the last 26 seasons.

Americas Cup to Benefit Cal State Fullerton Wrestling
Bakersfield, CA - This morning the Committee for the Preservation of California Collegiate Wrestling, and there subsidiary, the State of California Wrestling Alliance (SCWAY) a NUWAY affiliate announced the first annual NUWAY Americas Cup on June 4th and 5th 2010. The event is an exchange between top wrestlers from California, Michigan, New Jersey, and Nevada. The premise of the event is to showcase the talents of some of the top wrestlers in the country while promoting an exchange of cultural, geographical, and personal experiences. The event will benefit the participants, the wrestling community, and collegiate wrestling.
The 2010 NUWAY Americas Cup will be hosted by California this year with the winning team receiving the Americas Cup and the right to defend it in their state the following year. The host state will provide regional teams and multiple venues to showcase not only its wrestling diversity but to provide multiple geographical experiences for the participants. This years events will be held respectively at Cal State Fullerton and perennial California wrestling power Clovis High School. The June 4th event at Cal State Fullerton will benefit the Cal State Fullerton wrestling team, while the ticket proceeds from the event at Clovis will benefit future wrestling exchanges. Both events will be streamed live nationally at www.savecaliforniawrestling.com for the price of admission which is $10.00.
At the June 4th event in Fullerton, CA regional teams from San Diego and the Southern California area will compete in a tandem dual format against state teams from Michigan, New Jersey, and Nevada. The honorary coach for San Diego will be Byron Campbell who is the current head coach at San Diego's only collegiate wrestling program, Palomar Junior College. The San Diego team will also be coached by Poway High Schools John Meyers, a long time assistant to legendary coach Wayne Branstetter, former California State Champion and La Costa Canyon high school coach Dwayne Buth, and Preston Picus a former Columbia University wrestler who currently is the coach at Rancho Buena Vista high school . Ryan Halsey a co-founder of the Committee for the Preservation of California Collegiate Wrestling and San Diego county native stated, "we are proud that the top programs in San Diego have taken the lead on ensuring the participation of not only their section but also the best kids in San Diego in this years event." State champion Bryan Grubbs, state finalist and Reno TOC champion Victor Lopez from Poway are just two of the many talented participants representing San Diego.
The Southern California area team will be led by long time Cerritos College coach Donny Garriot. Donny was the former head coach at North Torrance High School for nearly two decades before he moved up to the college ranks. Donny was also a collegiate wrestler at Chico before the program was discontinued. The Southern California team will not be short on talent on the mat either led by two time state champion, and flo nationals champion Morgan Mcintosh. The junior Mcintosh who is one of the best wrestlers in the country will be joined by teammate Tank Knowles state champion in his own right as well as super 32 champion Chris Mecate, state champion Frank Martinez, sophomore sensation Joey "Iceman" Davis, youth phenom Zahid Valencia and a host of other talented wrestlers from the area.
The June 4th event at Cal State Fullerton promises to be action packed. Ernest Ciaccio who is a regional director for NUWAY stated, "this exchange is the first in a series of events that will enable us to protect, preserve and advance our sport at every level. Dan Hicks has done a great job in developing a model to self fund his program under the threat of discontinuation. This is our way of doing what we can to help him financially while getting some of the top kids in the country on his campus, and fans in his gym. College administrators need to know that wrestling is important in California and we hope events like this one will make that clear."
The June 5th event at Clovis High school will showcase the talent from California's central valley. The central valley is known by many around the country as the Mecca of California wrestling. Programs like Clovis, Lemoore, and Bakersfield have put out countless NCAA champions, All Americans, World Champions, and Olympic medalists. The regional team from the central valley will showcase two time state champion Alex Cisneros and his Selma teammates Nick Pena, Justin Lozano, and Nathan Zarate. The returning state champion Bakersfield High Drillers will have a host of participants including NHSCA freshman national champ Coleman Hammond, NHSCA All American Timmy Box, and NHSCA Junior Finalist Ian Nickell. Clovis High will have three state placers participating led by State finalist and Arizona state bound Tommy Burriel. Lemoore coach Marcio Botehlo a former NCAA All American from Fresno State knows exactly what this event means to the central valley and summed it up by saying "we lost Fresno state, and now Cal State Bakersfield is facing elimination; this is our opportunity to show the country that wrestling in the central valley is in need of a collegiate program." Lemoore will be represented by state champion Nick Sierra, state placer Dillon Rocha, Heavyweight Steven Woods and the ever exciting diaper dandy Issiah Martinez.
Adam Tirapelle a 3x NCAA All American and National Champion stated "central valley wrestling has a proud tradition at the youth and high school levels and we are excited to have a chance to showcase our talents while competing against high level wrestlers from tradition rich states such as New jersey and Michigan." The honorary coach of the central valley squad will be Paul Keysaw a former NCAA champion who wrestled at Cal State Bakersfield. Keysaw, a native from Pennsylvania is the current coach at Fresno City College and is the winningest coach since 1972 at the California Community College level. Paul explained the importance of the event exclaiming " this is an opportunity for the California wrestling community to unite and make a commitment to improving wrestling in our state. To do this we have to support all levels of wrestling with an emphasis on advancing our state both on the mat and in the public eye. I along with many others am committed to making this happen in California, I will always fight for wrestling."
The event would not be possible if it were not for Dave Dean the president of NUWAY. "Dave has been a huge friend of California wrestling over the last six months. Both he and NUWAY co-founder Roger Chandler have worked with the State of California Wrestling Alliance for the Youth to create a grass roots state organization that will benefit all levels of folkstyle wrestling in California. Dave, Roger and Danny Mullan who is the state director for JWAY, which is the New Jersey NUWAY affiliate have all contributed their staff, financial resources, and media relationships to help make this event possible. The NUWAY model is all about building bridges, and neighbor helping neighbor and this is a perfect example of the model working at its finest!" exclaimed Ciaccio. Dean who has been quoted as saying " were in a fight to save wrestling if I love wrestling which I do then I am accountable. That is why for the last ten years I have been committed to developing an organization that will affect change for the betterment of wrestling as a whole and look to provide a solution to stop the discontinuation of collegiate programs."
Tony Greathouse a former Michigan State Wrestler, and NCAA qualifier will be coaching the MYWA team from Michigan . "Tony has dedicated countless hours to serving wrestling in Michigan and around the country and has worked hard to bring together a group of kids from Michigan that want to help save California College wrestling. Times are hard in Michigan, and people are hurting as a result of the economy and to think that kids want to help others at a time like this is a commitment to great personal sacrifice and truly a neighbor helping neighbor story," said Dean. Michigan will be lead by Freddie Rodriguez two time state champion the top wrestler in the country at 103 pounds as well as Devin Pommerenke, Ryan Watts, and John Rizgallah all whom will be wrestling at the division one level next year in college. The team from Michigan boasts 11 state finalists and over 40 career state medals, as well as various national tournament placing. "Michigan has become much tougher as a result of the NUWAY movement there in the last decade and we are going to see some of the fruits of that effort during the Americas Cup," stated Keysaw.
"Danny Mullen from Long Branch New Jersey can be found on any weekend throughout the year hosting youth tournaments, housing wrestlers, or making long trips across the northeast in his van packed with wrestlers. Danny is known for being the protector of the less fortunate and a giver!" exclaimed Ciaccio. The JWAY team from New Jersey on paper is favorite to take the cup home boasting nationally ranked wrestlers in nearly ten weight classes
. Led by Long Branch wrestlers Nick Visicaro and Scotty Festejo both New Jersey State Champs, the New Jersey squad consist of #2 nationally ranked New Jersey state champ Anthony Ashnault , State Finalists Kyle Casaletto, Doug Cornell and the ever tough BJ Young. "We couldn't be happier to have New Jersey as a participant here this year. New Jersey like California operates under a single class state system in high school wrestling and I know how tough they are as a state but its time the nation took notice," said Halsey.
Rounding out the teams will be the silver state. "Nevada wrestling has been on the rise in the last decade. This year they have kids like the Alex and Napoleon Anciete, Colby Garrison, Joey Lavallie, Curtis Lampert, Bo Bettinson and Steven Hernandez whom have all proved that they can compete on the national level," said Ciaccio. Nevada is still in the process of finalizing there lineup "but you can bet that Coaches Lampert, Edmunds, and Newman with the help of others will bring a solid squad", said Halsey. While many might not be familiar with the geography of Nevada it boasts two major cities Las Vegas and Reno and they are seven hours apart. The coordination that is happening is really what the NUWAY movement is about developing strong relationships amongst men of goodwill to better the wrestling experience for kids," said Dean.
The organizers would like to thank the administrations at Clovis high school and Cal State Fullerton for allowing us to use their facilities for this historic event, Titan Wrestling Club, Mr. Poindexter and family, TRAIN2WIN sports and Cliff Keen for helping with uniforms, the California Grappler staff for promotion, The Michigan Grappler staff, The California Wrestler forum staff members Michael Wright and Bill Grant, Tom Bunge at Matguard, Jim Jennings at Waterbucket Media as well as Ken Smith and Southwest Traders for their generous contributions. We would also like to thank all the coaches, parents, participants and fans in advance for their support.

Cal State Fullerton Wrestling, Women's Gymnastics Saved for Next Year
The intercollegiate wrestling and women's gymnastics programs at Cal State Fullerton will be retained for the 2010-11 academic year as the result of generous financial support from their respective communities.
"I wish to congratulate Head Coaches Dan and Jill Hicks for their remarkable efforts in spearheading two campaigns that raised $476,356 in a very short time," said Director of Athletics Brian Quinn. "Their passion for their sports and their student-athletes is obvious.
"All funds must be deposited with the university by Aug. 1, 2010, for the sports to continue competing in the 2010-11 seasons."
"We had some big help at the last minute," said Jill Hicks. "I didn't know whether we could do it... but we're set, not permanently, but at least for one more year."
"It has been a long year," she said. "This has taken so much effort and been a focus so long that it hasn't yet sunk in that we made it."
Wrestling competes in the Pac-10 Conference and women's gymnastics competes in the Western Athletic Conference. Both sports were targeted for termination due to the ongoing fiscal crisis in the CSU system. The coaches were given the opportunity to fund their programs for next year with community support and both have met their goals and deadlines.
Fullerton sponsors 17 sports -- 10 women and 7 men -- at the NCAA Div. I level.
Message from Coach Hicks: California College Wrestling
To all High School and Youth Coaches:
First of all, let me thank you for supporting us through another college wrestling season at Cal State Fullerton. We continue to build the program and it would not be possible without the support from many levels of wrestling.
We continue to raise money to stabilize the program and together we have raised $240,000 since last May.
We were able to bring the All Star Classic to Southern California and offer the Cal State Fullerton Open as a premier early season college tournament that had 344 competitors (our biggest field yet).
In order to continue to offer D-1 College Wrestling at Cal State Fullerton we must raise our budget each year.
One way to significantly secure the program is by developing re-occuring events that fund the budget. Tournaments, Camps, Pledge drives and other fundraising projects are set up and running.
I want to ask you to consider bringing kids to either the team camps (45 teams signed up so far) or the individual camps.
Team camps- July 6-10 or 11-15
Individual camps- July 6-10 9-2pm All Ages and experience welcome
July 11-15 9-2pm Women's Camp
We need the support of the wrestlers in Southern California to fill these camps.
The money generated will help us move towards full funding on a year to year basis. Please consider distributing flyers to your wrestlers.
Help us save California College Wrestling.
Sincerely,
Dan Hicks
Three Cal State Fullerton Wrestlers Through to NCAA Championship
Wow! Adin tore it up this weekend! On his way to a PAC-10 Championship and an Outstanding Wrestler Award Adin beat the #12, #3 and #4 wrestlers in the Nation! We are looking forward to seeing Adin get a high seed at the NCAA's and make a run at a title!
Among others going through to Omaha are Junior Andre Gonzalez who took 4th at a VERY tough 125lb class and Heavyweight Junior Kurt Klimek who also took 4th. All three weight classes were VERY deep with nationally ranked guys.
Nick Jordan placed 4th at 149lbs and has an outside shot at obtaining a wildcard for NCAA's since he placed above an automatic qualifier.
See you in OMAHA!!!

NWCA All-Star Classic at Cal State Fullerton
Jake Varner of Iowa State continued his dominance of Nebraska's Craig Brister at 197 and last-minute substitute heavyweight Matt Monteiro scored a last-second decision to highlight Sunday afternoon's 44th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic in Cal State Fullerton's overflowing Titan Gym.
Varner beat Brister for the fourth time in five bouts with a 5-4 decision. A reversal early in the third period put him in control. It was a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Championship bout.
Monteiro, who was added to the lineup when defending national champion Mark Ellis of Missouri was injured on Thursday, scored a takedown as time expired to beat David Zabriskie of Iowa State, 4-3. Monteiro is the defending Pac-10 champion from Cal State Bakersfield.
The standing room only crowd of 4,000 was treated to a pair of exciting bouts in the lightweights. At 125, Zach Sanders of Minnesota was trailing Old Dominion's James Nicholson, 5-3, late in the third period. But a reversal and a near fall with about 25 seconds remaining became a 7-5 victory.
At 133, Daniel Dennis of Iowa scored a takedown with about 25 seconds remaining to grab a 9-8 decision over Steve Bell of Maryland.
The event was held in California for the first time, in part as a fund-raiser for Fullerton's endangered program. The Titans' Adin Duenas, who was scheduled to wrestle a preliminary featured bout, was rushed into the All-Star Classic at 141 pounds when Nick Gallick of Iowa State did not show up. Duenas lost an 8-0 major decision o Alex Krom of Maryland.

The Titans improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 duals while the injury-riddled Mustangs fell to 3-7 and 0-2 after their final home meet of the season. It was Fullerton's first win over the Mustangs since 1992-93 and came after back-to-back one-point losses the past two seasons.
Andre Gonzalez got a decision at 125 pounds to get Fullerton out ahead and Dillashaw and Duenas made it an 11-0 lead before Cal Poly hit its strengths. Three consecutive decisions closed the gap but Fullerton won the final four bouts to win going away.
Fullerton is idle until more Pac-10 matches at Boise State on Jan. 23 and at Oregon State and Portland State on Jan. 25.
