Perry, Azevedo to Serve as Co-Head Cal Poly Wrestling Coaches for 2010-11 Season

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Mark Perry, who recently completed his first
season as assistant wrestling coach at Cal Poly, and seven-year Mustang head
coach John Azevedo will serve as co-head coaches beginning with the 2010-11
season.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Cal Poly director of athletics Alison
Cone.

"This move further strengthens our wrestling coaching staff," said Cone.
"Mark's strengths combined with John's attributes will provide us with an
unbeatable coaching combination."

With Perry as his assistant last season, Azevedo guided Cal Poly to a
third-place Pacific-10 Conference finish and produced a pair of NCAA
All-Americans. He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year by
D1CollegeWrestling.net.

"I think this will be great experience for Mark and his future as a head
coach," said Azevedo.

When Perry was hired as assistant coach last summer, Azevedo said, "I
believe his passion for wrestling and winning will help Cal Poly wrestling
go to the next level of becoming the best. Mark brings an extensive amount
of individual and team success to the program."

Perry, a two-time national champion and four-time All-American at Iowa,
spent the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach at Penn State before coming
to Cal Poly a year ago.

"Being promoted to co-head coach is a huge honor for me and I am confident
that I will be able to continue to help this program move forward in its
quest toward winning Pac-10 titles and NCAA trophies," said Perry. "The
future of Cal Poly wrestling is going to be exciting. I guarantee our fans
and alumni we are going to be one of the top programs in the country on a
consistent basis in the near future.

"Wrestling fans in California are excited about what is going on at Cal Poly
and our wrestlers will continue to work toward winning NCAA titles," Perry
added.

The Mustangs rebounded from a tough 2008-09 campaign by finishing just seven
points shy of Pac-10 champion Oregon State. Chase Pami finished second at
157 pounds in both the Pac-10 and NCAA finals while Boris Novachkov won a
Pac-10 title at 133 and placed seventh nationally.

Their finish marked the first time in six seasons that multiple wrestlers
finished as All-Americans at Cal Poly. Azevedo led the Mustangs to an 8-4
dual meet record, including a 5-2 mark in Pac-10 matches.

Azevedo, 45-61 in dual meets as Mustang head coach, has guided nine Mustangs
to All-American honors and seven Pac-10 champions.

He was an assistant under Lennis Cowell for two years before taking over the
head job with the Mustangs in 2003. His coaching career also includes one
year as a graduate assistant at Arizona State (1980-81), three years as
assistant coach at Cal State Bakersfield (1981-84), two years as an
assistant as Notre Dame (1984-86), five years as an assistant coach at
Wisconsin (1986-91) and 12 seasons as head coach at Calvary Chapel High in
Santa Ana (1991-2003), leading the wrestling program to seven state
championships and one runner-up finish.

Calvary Chapel also garnered 11 league titles, 10 CIF-Southern Section team
championships, and posted a 183-18 dual meet record under Azevedo's
direction. The program also spawned 23 NCAA Division 1 wrestlers. Azevedo
was named National High School Coach of the Year in 1993 and California
Coach of the Year seven times.

As a collegian, Azevedo won an NCAA title in 1980 while at Cal State
Bakersfield, after two runner-up finishes and three NCAA Division II titles.
He amassed a 122-2 collegiate record and was named team captain three times.
He is also a member of the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Azevedo was also a member of the 1980 United States Olympic team (the United
States boycotted those summer games in Moscow) and won a national freestyle
championship in 1981. He placed fourth at the World Championships in 1982.

Azevedo earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Cal State
Bakersfield in 1981.

Perry was the NCAA individual national champion in 2007 and 2008 while
helping the Iowa Hawkeyes to a team championship in 2008.

With his title in 2008, Perry became the 17th four-time All-American and
14th two-time national champion in NCAA history. During his 2007 NCAA run,
Perry defeated two-time NCAA champion Johny Hendricks in the finals on his
way to a 32-5 record.

Both his NCAA titles came at 165 pounds.

As a sophomore at the NCAAs, Perry placed third at 174 pounds, earning the
Gorriaran Trophy for pinning four opponents at the championships. As a
freshman he placed second at 165 pounds, posting a 32-5 overall record.

Perry was a team captain all four years at Iowa and was a Big Ten Conference
finalist four times as well, capturing one title in 2007. He also was a
four-time finalist in the prestigious Midlands Wrestling Tournament, earning
two titles.

Perry was named National Wrestling Coaches Association rookie of the year in
2005 and University of Iowa athlete of the year in 2007.

Perry was a two-time prep national champion while attending Blair Academy,
located 60 miles west of New York City, in rural Warren County, New Jersey.
He was a three-time AISCS High School All-American while posting a career
169-7 record.

Perry earned his bachelor of arts degree in art from the University of Iowa
in 2008.

Six Cal Poly Wrestlers Qualify for NCAA Championships

DAVIS, Calif. -- Boris Novachkov captured the Pacific-10 Conference
championship at 133 pounds, four other Mustangs finished second and Ryan
DesRoches claimed third place at 174 as Cal Poly settled for a third-place
team finish Saturday night at The Pavilion.

The quartet of Mustangs who placed second are Filip Novachkov at 141 pounds,
Nick Fisher at 149, Chase Pami at 157 and Ryan Smith at 197.

All six Mustangs have qualified for the NCAA Division I National
Championships, scheduled for March 18-20 in Omaha, Neb.

Cal Poly, in first place after Friday's second session, scored 120 points to
finish third. Oregon State, with one champion, three runners-up and five
national qualifiers, captured its 18th Pac-10 team championship with 127
points, followed by Boise State, the 2008 and 2009 team champion, with 125
points.

Boris Novachkov earned a 4-3 decision against top-seeded Brandon Low of UC
Davis in the 133-pound final for his first Pac-10 title. He placed third in
2008.

His brother, Filip Novachkov, a third-place finisher in 2009, placed second
at 141 after falling to Adin Duenas of Cal State Fullerton 9-3. Novachkov
was seeded second and Duenas fourth.

At 149, Fisher dropped a 12-9 decision to Barrett Abel of UC Davis. Abel was
seeded second and Fisher fourth. Fisher upset the top seed, Jason
Chamberlain of Boise State, in the semifinals with a fall in 4:24.

Pami, the two-time Pac-10 champion, settled for second place at 157 this
year as he fell 5-1 to Adam Hall of Boise State in the final round.

Smith dropped an 11-5 decision to top-seeded Riley Orozco of Cal State
Bakersfield in the 197-pound final.

DesRoches won two matches Saturday to claim third place at 174, earning a
7-2 decision against Todd Noel of Cal State Fullerton and a 6-2 triumph over
Eric Starks of Arizona State. DesRoches had lost three times to Starks over
the last two seasons, all by decision.

Earlier on Saturday, Steven Vasquez earned a fifth-place finish at 165.
Vasquez lost to Michael Cuthbertson of Boise State 8-2 in the consolation
semifinals before earning a 6-1 decision against Joseph Granata of Cal State
Bakersfield in the match for fifth and sixth place.

At 125, Micah Ferguson lost to Christopher Armendariz of UC Davis 15-5 and
settled for eighth place.

At 184, Kelan Bragg lost a 6-3 decision to Jake Meredith of Arizona State
and also fell 13-7 to Ty Vinson of Oregon State in the match for fifth and
sixth place.

And at 285, Jim Powers was a 4-2 winner over Dylan Rush of Stanford for
seventh place.

Coach John Azevedo's Mustangs have never captured the Pac-10 championship,
settling for second-place finishes in 2004 and 2006. Cal Poly, sixth the
last two years, was 5-2 in conference dual meets this season, third in the
Pac-10.
Cal Poly to Compete in Pac-10 Championships at UC Davis

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly, which has finished second in the
Pacific-10 Conference Wrestling Championships, most recently in 2004 and
2006, seeks its first conference team title this weekend.

UC Davis will host the Pac-10 Championships on Friday and Saturday at The
Pavilion. Competition begins at noon each day with the championship finals
slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Seedings will be made Thursday night during a coaches meeting.

Four of the eight teams competing in the championships are ranked in the top
20 by WIN Magazine. Boise State, the two-time defending Pac-10 champion, is
ranked No. 9 while Oregon State is No. 14, Cal Poly No. 15 and Arizona State
No. 20.

Five of the 10 Mustangs slated to compete in the Pac-10 Championships are
former placewinners, led by two-time conference champion Chase Pami at 157
pounds.

Pami, who also placed fourth in 2007, will take a 23-5 record into this
weekend's competition. He sports a 93-33 career mark and earned NCAA
All-American honors with a seventh-place finish a year ago.

In last year's meet, Filip Novachkov placed third at 133 pounds, Ryan
DesRoches was fourth at 174 and Micah Ferguson sixth at 125. Ferguson also
placed fifth in 2008 while Boris Novachkov was third.

Also competing for Cal Poly this weekend will be Nick Fisher at 149, Steven
Vasquez at 165, Kelan Bragg at 184, Ryan Smith at 197 and Jim Powers at 285.

Pami is ranked No. 2 in the Pac-10 at 157 and his chief nemesis likely will
be Boise State's Adam Hall, ranked No. 1 in the weight class. They have met
five times in the last two years and Pami's lone victory was a 4-3 overtime
decision in last year's Pac-10 finals.

Filip Novachkov (21-5) is ranked No. 2 at 141 with a 20-5 record. The
top-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10 at 141 is Boise State's Levi Jones and the
pair split two decisions earlier this season.

Boris Novachkov (21-3) is ranked No. 4 at 133 and Andrew Hochstrasser is the
No. 1-ranked wrestler in the weight class. They did not meet in the dual
meet Jan. 24 at Cal Poly as Hochstrasser was recovering from a knee injury.

DesRoches (31-7) is ranked No. 3 in the conference at 174 and his top
challengers will be No. 1 Colby Covington of Oregon State and No. 2 Nate Lee
of Boise State. DesRoches has not wrestled Covington and he has lost three
decisions -- 6-3, 6-5 and 10-8 -- to Lee in the past.

Ryan Smith (17-10) is ranked No. 3 at 197 and has dropped 3-1 decisions to
both No. 1 Riley Orozco of Cal State Bakersfield and No. 2 Chad Hanke of
Oregon State this season. Smith also fell 13-3 to Orozco in the Pac-10
finals a year ago.

Fisher (15-5) sports a No. 4 Pac-10 ranking, trailing No. 1 Jason Chamberlin
of Boise State, Barrett Abel of UC Davis and Vicente Varela of Arizona
State. Fisher won by injury default against Abel and lost to Chamberlin and
Varela by decision in dual meets this season.

The NCAA Division I National Championships will be held March 18-20 at the
Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.

The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will announce how many NCAA
qualifiers will be awarded to each conference on Thursday. In addition, the
committee will select at-large qualifiers and tentatively announce the names
March 10.

Cal Poly Ends Dual Meet Schedule, Beats UC Davis 34-7

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly seniors Micah Ferguson and Chase Pami
earned victories in their final duals as Mustangs and junior Filip Novachkov
won by a fall as the No. 16 Mustangs defeated UC Davis 34-7 in a Pacific-10
Conference dual wrestling meet Friday night before 705 in Mott Gym.

Cal Poly completed the dual meet portion of its 2009-10 schedule with an 8-4
overall mark and 5-2 in Pac-10 duals. UC Davis fell to 3-11 and 1-5 with
another Pac-10 dual Saturday night at Cal State Bakersfield.

Ferguson earned a 9-4 decision over Aggie 125-pounder Chris Armendariz in
the opening bout of the dual meet. Novachkov's pin over Bryan Osuna in 1
minute, 24 seconds, gave Cal Poly a 9-3 advantage and Pami posted a 13-2
major decision over Trevor Machado at 157 to stake the Mustangs to a 19-3
advantage.

Novachkov, ranked fifth in the nation at 141, improved to 21-5 on the year
while Pami, ranked No. 11, now sports a 23-5 mark.

After intermission to acknowledge Cal Poly's five seniors -- Ferguson, Pami,
David Christian, Eric Maldonado and Brandyn Tepper -- the Mustangs won four
more bouts to pull away.

Steven Vasquez and Kelan Bragg earned victories by decision, Ryan DesRoches
won by major decision and Ryan Smith scored a technical fall for Cal Poly.

Vasquez scored a takedown late in the second period, the difference in a 3-1
decision over Joey Wilson at 165 pounds.

DesRoches, ranked 19th this week, recorded eight takedowns for a 16-8 lead,
then secured a two-point near fall and nearly four minutes of riding time en
route to a 19-8 major decision over Alex Darkhovsky at 174. DesRoches is now
31-7 on the year.

Bragg scored a takedown, two reversals and a three-point near fall on his
way to a 9-5 decision over Rory McBride at 184 and Smith notched nine
takedowns, a three-point near fall and two penalty points for a 23-8
technical fall against Abe Otrambo at 197.

Cal Poly's other victory was recorded by 149-pounder Nick Fisher. Shortly
after scoring a reversal late in the second period to cut his deficit
against Barrett Abel to 6-3, Abel injured his neck and was knocked
unconscious briefly. Because he lost consciousness, Abel, ranked 15th in the
nation in his weight class, needed a doctor's consent to continue and was
forced to default the match.

UC Davis heavyweight Ricky Alcala, ranked 16th at 285 pounds, posted a 14-5
major decision against Cal Poly's Jim Powers in the final bout.

In the only matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 15 Brandon Low of UC
Davis earned a 6-3 decision over No. 8 Boris Novachkov, snapping a 3-3 tie
with a takedown late in the third period and riding time. Low is 6-1 for the
season while Novachkov fell to 21-3.

Cal Poly will compete in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships on Feb.
26-27 at UC Davis.

Cal Poly Falls to Oregon State, 21-18

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- No. 18 Oregon State won four of the final five
bouts, including a fall by Colby Covington at 174 pounds, to rally from a
14-6 deficit and beat No. 16 Cal Poly 21-18 in a Pacific-10 Conference dual
wrestling meet Saturday night before 517 in Mott Gym.

Dan Brascetta, Chad Hanke and Clayton Jack all won by decision down the
stretch as the Beavers improved to 18-1 for the season and 6-1 in conference
duals. Cal Poly fell to 7-4 and 4-2.

Oregon has won 17 straight matches since a 25-7 loss to Pac-10 leader Boise
State on Nov. 22. The Beavers also have beaten Cal Poly 18 straight times,
raising their series advantage against the Mustangs to 35-10-2.

Oregon State won the first two bouts as Jason Lara earned an 11-5 decision
over Micah Ferguson and Kelly Kubec posted a 7-5 victory in overtime over
Boris Novachkov in a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers at 133 pounds.
It was Novachkov's second loss in 23 matches this season.

Cal Poly won the next three matches to build its 14-6 lead.

Filip Novachkov improved his record to 20-5 with an 11-2 major decision over
Mike Mangrum at 141 and Nick Fisher pinned No. 17 RJ Pena in 5 minutes, 27
seconds to win the 149-pound bout. Mustang 157-pounder Chase Pami completed
the run with a 14-5 major decision against Keegan Davis in another matchup
of nationally ranked wrestlers.

But the second half of the dual meet belonged to Oregon State. Besides the
133-pound bout, pivotal matches also occurred at 165 and 197.

Cal Poly 165-pounder Steven Vasquez battled Oregon State's Dan Brascetta to
a 3-3 draw after two periods, but Brascetta earned an escape and takedown in
the third period and held on for a 6-4 decision.

At 197, Mustang Ryan Smith and Beaver Chad Hanke traded escapes in the
second and third periods after a scoreless first period. The bout appeared
to be heading into overtime, but Hanke scored a takedown with 11 seconds
left for the 3-1 decision, tying the dual meet at 18-18.

At heavyweight, Mustang Jim Powers scored a takedown with 1:09 left in the
third period to close the gap to 3-2, but No. 14 Clayton Jack earned an
escape with 56 seconds left and clinched his match and the dual meet for
Oregon State with a takedown with 20 seconds remaining for the 6-2 decision.

Cal Poly's only winner in the final five bouts was Ryan DesRoches. Ranked
No. 19 at 174, DesRoches moved up to 184 and earned a 15-5 major decision
against Ty Vinson, improving his record for the season to 30-7.

Cal Poly Holds Off Arizona State, 20-18, for Dual Meet Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Technical falls by Ryan Smith and Filip Novachkov
plus a major decision by Chase Pami gave No. 16 Cal Poly just enough bonus
points to edge Arizona State 20-18 in a Pacific-10 Conference dual meet
Friday night before 672 in Mott Gym.

The Mustangs forfeited the bout at 125 but did not give up any more bonus
points as Arizona State secured four wins by decision. Each team won five
matches.

With the win, Cal Poly improved to 7-3 for the season and 4-1 in Pac-10 dual
meets. Arizona State fell to 8-6 and 3-2.

Smith scored five takedowns in the first period in racing to a 10-4
advantage, then secured four more takedowns and a three-point near fall in
the second period en route to his technical fall win by a 23-7 count at 4:55
against Michael Hawkins in the 197-pound bout.

Smith, still bidding for his first national ranking of the season, improved
his record to 16-9 with his first technical fall of the year.

After Arizona State won the next two matches to take a 9-5 lead, Mustang
133-pounder Boris Novachkov, ranked fifth in the nation, earned a 7-2 win
over unranked Ben Ashmore with two takedowns, one escape, one penalty point
and riding time.

Novachkov improved to 21-1 on the year.

Cal Poly moved back on top, 13-9, with Filip Novachkov's 16-1 technical fall
(4:28) over Chris Drouin in a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers at 141
pounds. Novachkov, ranked No. 5, scored 11 near fall points, a pair of
takedowns and an escape for his second technical fall of the year. Drouin is
ranked No. 15.

Filip Novachkov is now 19-5 for the season while Drouin fell to 16-9.

Arizona State closed the gap to 13-12 with Vicente Varela's 9-4 win over
Mustang Nick Fisher at 149, but victories by Pami and 174-pounder Ryan
DesRoches down the stretch kept Cal Poly out of trouble.

Pami recorded eight takedowns, one escape and riding time on his way to an
18-6 major decision over Te Edwards at 157. Pami, ranked No. 11 this week
and a two-time Pac-10 champion, is now 21-5 for the season.

DesRoches gave up just two escapes in an 8-2 decision over Eric Starks at
174, giving Cal Poly a 20-15 advantage with one bout to go. DesRoches,
ranked 19th this week, is 29-7 on the year.

Mustang 184-pounder Kelan Bragg battled Jake Meredith tough throughout the
match, eventually dropping an 8-6 decision in a matchup of unranked
wrestlers. Bragg closed the gap to 6-5 with a takedown midway through the
second period, but Meredith battled through a pair of injury timeouts for
his left knee with an early takedown in the final period and held on for the
win.

Other Sun Devil victories were posted by No. 17 Erik Nye at 285 (1-0
decision) and Kyle DeBerry at 165 (6-4 decision). Arizona State 125-pounder
Anthony Robles, ranked No. 3 in the nation, won by forfeit.

Arizona State still leads the series against Cal Poly, 31-10. The Mustangs
snapped an 18-match Sun Devil winning streak two years ago in Mott Gym with
a 24-17 decision and Arizona State won last year's dual in Tempe, 36-10.

Cal Poly hosts Oregon State for another Pac-10 dual meet Saturday night at 7
in Mott Gym. All tickets are $10 for the "Endowment Fund Meet," with all
proceeds going directly to the Cal Poly Wrestling Endowment Fund.

The reunion weekend concludes Saturday night with Cal Poly's "Endowment Fund
Meet" against Oregon State. All tickets for the match are $10 with all
proceeds going directly to the Cal Poly Wrestling Endowment Fund.

Earlier this year, Cal Poly beat Cal State Fullerton, Missouri and Cal State
Bakersfield to start the season 3-0. The Mustangs fell to No. 4 Oklahoma
State 21-13 and No. 10 Oklahoma 27-13 last month in the Sooner State, but
rebounded with victories over North Dakota State (29-9), San Francisco State
(32-9) and Stanford (28-11) the last three weeks.

The three-match winning streak was snapped by two-time Pac-10 champion Boise
State 23-13 on Jan. 24. Cal Poly was idle last week.

Arizona State is 8-5 overall and 3-1 in Pac-10 dual meets while Oregon State
is 16-1 and 4-1 with a match Friday at Cal State Fullerton. The Beavers have
won 15 straight dual meets since a 25-7 loss to Boise State on Nov. 22.

Last weekend in Tempe, Oregon State defeated Arizona State 35-5.

The Mustangs are ranked as high as No. 13 this week while Oregon State is
No. 16 and Arizona State No. 18.

Four Cal Poly wrestlers are ranked this week.

At 133 pounds, sophomore Boris Novachkov is ranked No. 4 by

Boise State Wins Feature Matches for 23-13 Dual Meet Victory Over Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- No. 12 Boise State rode a technical fall by No.
1-ranked Kirk Smith and victories in two matches pitting nationally ranked

With a pair of three-point near falls late in the match, Smith earned a 20-4
technical fall against Mustang 184-pounder Kelan Bragg, lifting his record

Cal Poly, which fell to 6-3 and 3-1, won just two of the nine contested
matches and received a forfeit at 133 as Boise State's Andrew Hochstrasser,
ranked third in the nation, is recovering from a knee injury.

Boise State 141-pounder Levi Jones, ranked 12th in the nation, jumped to a
5-1 lead in the first 3 minutes, 20 seconds of his match against No. 4 Filip

decision over Michael Cuthbertson. An escape by Cuthbertson 10 seconds into
the final period tied the match at 4-4, but Vasquez scored a takedown with
50 seconds left to take a 6-4 lead and held on.

The win by Vasquez (10-8) closed Boise State's lead to 15-13, but the

Cal Poly's 2009 Recruiting Class Ranked No. 6 by InterMat

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly's 2009 class of five recruits, announced
two weeks ago, has been judged as the sixth best in the nation by InterMat.

In its Early Period Recruiting Class Rankings, InterMat lists Iowa as No. 1,
followed by Northwestern and Iowa State. Penn State and Cornell round out
the top five.

Cal Poly's signees -- five high school wrestlers -- to the National Letter
of Intent included a pair of state champions and three state placewinners.

"The Cal Poly program is not one usually seen toward the top of the
collegiate wrestling landscape or the recruiting rankings," according to a
release by InterMat on its Web site. "However, this class of five wrestlers
-- four of them ranked inside the Top 100 recruits for the Class of 2010 --
is clearly among the best classes of the early period.

"Mark Perry, who is in his first season as an assistant coach at Cal Poly,
is spearheading the recruiting and has made a tremendous impact in a
relatively short period of time," the release adds.

Mustang recruits on the Top 100 include No. 42 Jesse Delgado of Gilroy High
School, No. 83 Tucker Armstrong of Kenton Ridge High School in Springfield,
Ohio, No. 93 Drew Meulman of St. Francis High School in Mountain View and
No. 95 Travis Gallegos of Foothill High School in Palo Cedro, Calif.

"We're very excited that some of the best wrestlers in California and the
nation have signed with Cal Poly," said Mustang head coach John Azevedo.
"Being ranked sixth shows we are headed in the right direction."

Added Perry: "Coach Azevedo and I are very pleased with how our early
signing period class has turned out. These five student-athletes have the
mindset and attitude we want in every one of our athletes. They want to be
NCAA champions and they want team titles.

"As the spring signing period is just around the corner, we are at work
looking to sign guys who will make an immediate impact on the program,"
Perry said. "The Cal Poly wrestling staff is working very hard in all areas
to bring Pac-10 and national championships to the West!"

In InterMat's high school weight class rankings, Delgado is No. 5 at 119,
Armstrong is No. 10 at 140, Meulman is No. 7 at 285, Gallegos is No. 10 at
160 and Dominic Kastl of Gilroy High School, the fifth Mustang signee, is
No. 16 at 160.

Cal Poly, 2-0 in duals so far, was idle last week for Thanksgiving and
returns to action Friday and Saturday at the 28th Annual Cliff Keen Las
Vegas Collegiate Invitational at the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm,
Nevada.
