Cal Poly to Host Oregon State at Cuesta College
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The top two Pacific-12 Conference teams from the 2011 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational will face each other in a Pac-12 dual meet Sunday afternoon at Cuesta College.
The meet, scheduled to start at 1 p.m., has been moved from its customary Mott Gym venue due to fall commencement exercises.
With two champions and a pair of fifth-place finishers, Oregon State finished fifth in the 34-team Las Vegas Invitational. Ryan DesRoches captured the 174-pound title and two other Mustangs placed fifth as Cal Poly claimed 11th place.
In this week's WIN Magazine rankings, Oregon State is No. 13 while Cal Poly is No. 16. The InterMat team rankings placed Oregon State No. 13 and Cal Poly No.18.
A year ago in Corvallis, Oregon, Cal Poly snapped an 18-match losing streak against the Beavers with an 18-15 victory, capturing wins in six of the 10 bouts.
Feature matches in that dual, expected to be the same on Sunday, were at 141 and 285 pounds. At 141, Cal Poly's Boris Novachkov earned 1:30 of riding time for a 3-2 decision against Mike Mangrum while Atticus Disney was a 12-6 winner over Oregon State's Clayton Jack at 285.
This week, Novachkov is ranked Nos. 4 and 5 at 141 and Mangrum sports Nos. 2 and 3 national rankings. At 285, Jack is ranked Nos. 4 and 6 while Disney is ranked as high as No. 15.
At the Las Vegas Invitational, Mangrum edged Novachkov 4-3 in the semifinals while Disney dropped a 6-2 decision to Jack, also in the semifinals. Both Mustang wrestlers went on to finish fifth while both Beavers claimed first place.
Novachkov has a career 2-1 mark against Mangrum and all three matches have been decided by one point. Mangrum placed third in the Pac-12 finals in 2010 and 2011 and posted 3-2 marks in the NCAA Championships both years but did not place.
Jack is 2-1 against Disney all time. He is a three-time NCAA qualifier and 2011 Pac-12 champion, improving on his second-place Pac-10 finishes as both as freshman and sophomore.
Novachkov is a two-time NCAA All-American (second in 2011, seventh in 2010) and two-time Pac-12 champion. He sports a 10-2 record this season and is 97-21 in his Mustang career.
DesRoches, meanwhile, is 11-0 and, with his Las Vegas Invitational title, jumped into No. 4 in the national rankings by WIN Magazine, WrestlingReport.com and InterMat. He likely will face Oregon State's Ty Vinson (10-3) for the second time in his Mustang career. DesRoches earned a 15-5 major decision in a dual meet two years ago in Mott Gym.
DesRoches is a two-time NCAA qualifier who has 37 career falls. He won all five of his Las Vegas Invitational matches by decision, including tiebreaker wins in the semifinals and final.
Other Mustangs in the rankings this week include Ryan Smith, ranked No. 30 at 197 by WrestlingReport.com, and Brandan Rocha, ranked No. 31 by the same Web site at 133 pounds.
Smith (6-3) faces Nos. 10/14/15/19 Taylor Meeks (12-2), a fifth-place finished at the Las Vegas Invitational, on Sunday while Rocha (4-3), who won three of five matches at the Las Vegas Invitational, is matched up with Nos. 14/17/20 Garrett Drucker (2-2), who placed second in the Pac-12 finals last year and qualified for the NCAA Championship.
Other Oregon State wrestlers in the national rankings this week are 125-pounder Pat Rollins (9-6), ranked No. 29 by WrestlingReport.com; 149-pounder Scott Sakaguchi (12-2), ranked from Nos. 16-19 in the four major polls; and 157-pounder RJ Pena (12-4), a fifth-place finisher in the Las Vegas Invitational and ranked anywhere from No. 16 to No. 20. Sakaguchi placed seventh at Las Vegas.
The Beavers and Mustangs are meeting for the 49th time Sunday and Oregon State holds a 35-11-2 advantage in the series. Cal Poly's win over the Beavers a year ago in Gill Coliseum was its first since 1989.
The rest of Cal Poly's lineup for the Las Vegas Invitational includes Britain Longmire (6-5) or Michael Clemmensen (0-2) at 125 pounds, Adam Aslam (1-5) at 149, Elijah Jackson (1-2) or Travis Rasmussen (4-2) at 157, Dominic Kastl (4-1) or Steven Vasquez (4-1) at 165 and Sean Dougherty (4-4) at 184.
Cal Poly is 2-0 in duals with wins over Cal State Bakersfield and Menlo College while Oregon State sports a 2-1 mark with wins over Simon Fraser and Boise State and a 21-18 loss to Missouri. The Beavers wrestle at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday night before visiting San Luis Obispo.

Cal Poly's Ryan DesRoches Captures 174-Pound Title at Las Vegas Invitational
LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Cal Poly senior Ryan DesRoches captured the 174-pound championship with a pair of overtime decisions Saturday at the 2011 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
DesRoches, seeded third, earned a 6-5 tiebreaker victory over fourth-seeded Justin Zeerip of Michigan in the title match, hours after scoring a reversal in a 3-2 tiebreaker win over No. 2 Nick Heflin of Ohio State in the semifinals.
Mustang 141-pounder Boris Novachkov and 285-pounder Atticus Disney both placed fifth.
Oveall, it was a good weekend for us," said first-year Mustang head coach Brendan Buckley. "We knew this weekend would be a good test for us and let us know where we stand."
DesRoches trailed Zeerip 5-2 after two periods in the championship final, but rallied with an escape and takedown in the third period to tie the match at 5-5. Neither wrestler scored in the sudden victory period. DesRoches rode out Zeerip in the first tiebreaker, then escaped quickly in the second tiebreaker and held on for the 6-5 victory and the title.
DesRoches and Zeerip met for the first time. Zeerip advanced to the title match when top-seeded Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford was forced to default for medical reasons.
In the semifinals, DesRoches and Heflin exchanged escapes during the first three periods. There was no scoring in the sudden victory period, but DesRoches earned a reversal in the first tiebreaker and Heflin mustered an escape in the second tiebreaker, giving DesRoches the 3-2 decision.
DesRoches (pictured at right) is a two-time NCAA qualifier and sports an 11-0 mark so far this season.
"Ryan had a terrific weekend as he battled from behind three times in a row to win the tournament," said Buckley. "He can never be counted out and he gets better as the match goes on."
Meanwhile, two-time NCAA All-American Boris Novachkov was upset in the semifinals by third-seeded Michael Mangrum of Oregon State in a 4-3 decision.
In the consolation semifinals, Novachkov, the No. 2 seed, faced top-seeded Kellen Russell of Michigan. Novachkov posted a 31-2 record a year ago en route to a second-place NCAA finish. Both of his losses were to Russell by 3-2 decisions. Russell was upset in the quarterfinals by No. 8 Hunter Stieber of Ohio State 6-5 Friday night.
This time, Russell earned a tiebreaker victory based on a two-second advantage in riding time. The two wrestlers fought to a 2-2 draw in regulation.
Later on Saturday, Novachkov secured fifth place with a 5-3 decision over Tyler Small of Kent State. Novachkov, a two-time Pac-12 champion, is 11-2 on the year.
"Boris lost a couple close matches, one to the eventual champion and one to Russell, who was also upset," said Buckley. "He most certainly learned from those losses and now knows what adjustments he needs to make."
Mustang 285-pounder Atticus Disney, seeded 11th, was the third Cal Poly wrestler to reach the semifinals Friday night, but dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 2 Clayton Jack of Oregon State on Saturday morning.
In the wrestlebacks, Disney fell 7-3 against sixth-seeded Brendan Barlow of Kent State. Disney pinned Barlow in 1:19 in a second-round match Friday.
And in the match for fifth and sixth place, Disney won by medical forfeit against Levi Cooper of Arizona State. Disney is now 4-3 on the year.
"Atticus started off very well, beating two highly ranked wrestlers on Friday, and demonstrated his athleticism," said Buckley. "He held back a little today, but I know this will be a boost to his confidence moving forward."
The lone Cal Poly wrestler still alive in the wrestlebacks after Friday's action was 133-pounder Brandan Rocha, but he was eliminated Saturday morning in a 9-2 loss to Ridge Kiley of Nebraska. Rocha is 4-3 for the season.

Cal Poly Opens Dual Meet Season at Cal State Bakersfield
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Brendan Buckley's first dual meet as head coach of the Cal Poly wrestling team will be a Pacific-12 Conference matchup against Cal State Bakersfield on Friday night at 7 in the Icardo Center.
"We're looking forward to our first dual of the season against one of our instate rivals," said Buckley, head coach at Columbia University for 11 seasons before he was hired at Cal Poly last April.
Cal State Bakersfield split a pair of duals last week, defeating Menlo College 35-6 and falling to Stanford 28-9 in a Pacific-12 Conference matchup.
Cal Poly has competed in two non-scoring tournaments so far this season.
At the Roadrunner Open held Nov. 5 in Bakersfield, Smith placed second in the 197-pound weight class while Sean Dougherty and Kelan Bragg both placed fourth at 184 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Last weekend, Mustang wrestlers Boris Novachkov (141) and Ryan DesRoches (174) captured individual titles in the Cowboy Open hosted by the University of Wyoming on Saturday. In addition, freshman Dominic Kastl placed second at 165 pounds while Steven Vasquez, also at 165, placed third.
Cal Poly is ranked No. 20 by InterMat and No. 23 by WrestlingReport.com while Cal State Bakersfield is unranked in both polls.
The Mustangs will send four nationally ranked wrestlers onto the mat Friday night.
Two-time NCAA All-American and Pacific-12 champion Boris Novachkov is ranked No. 2 at 141 pounds while 285-pounder Atticus Disney has earned a No. 27 ranking.

Monteiro Hired as Assistant Wrestling Coach at Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Mitch Monteiro, a Paso Robles High School graduate and three-time NCAA Division I national qualifier while wrestling at Cal State Bakersfield, has been added to Brendan Buckley's coaching staff at Cal Poly.
Monteiro earned NCAA All-American honors with a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds in the 2010 NCAA Championships en route to a 21-7 record as a senior with the Roadrunners.
He also qualified for the nationals in 2008, posting a 3-3 mark as a sophomore after transferring from Cuesta College, and in 2009 when he compiled a 29-8 record as a junior.
"We are very pleased to announce the hiring of Mitch Monteiro, a local product an a former NCAA All-American," said Buckley. " It can be difficult to find quality coaches that wrestled heavyweight and yet are agile and light enough to work with 184- and 197-pounders and we did just that.
"Mitch having wrestled at Paso Robles High School will also present us with the opportunity to strengthen our ties to the local wrestling community, something that is very important to us," Buckley added.
Monteiro attended Cal Poly from 2005-06 and was a member of the Mustang wrestling team, but had his season cut short due to an injury. He attended Cuesta College during the 2006-07 season, but that same injury kept him from competing as well.
Monteiro placed second in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships as a sophomore at Cal State Bakersfield and captured conference titles in both 2009 and 2010. He was named the Roadrunners' Male Athlete of the Year in 2010.
At Paso Robles High School, Monteiro claimed four league championships as well as three CIF-Southern Section individual titles. He was a two-time CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet placewinner with a first and a third, and twice qualified for the state finals, finishing second and third.
Monteiro is two courses shy of completing degree requirements in criminal justice at Cal State Bakersfield. He has been working as a line counselor at Aarons Boys Home in Atascadero since February, providing supervision, guidance and counseling to at-risk youth and juvenile delinquents.
Monteiro will coach wrestlers in the upper weights while Jamill Kelly, hired in August, will handle the lower-weight wrestlers. Kelly was a silver medalist in the 2004 Summer Olympics and a two-time NCAA qualifier.
Cal Poly Holds Annual Green vs. Gold Intrasquad Dual Meet
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Travis Rasmussen and Travis Gallegos earned major decisions to help the Green team, coached by Mitch Monteiro, to a 14-9 victory over the Gold squad, led by Lennis Cowell, in the Cal Poly wrestling team's annual intrasquad dual meet Sunday afternoon inside Mott Gym.
Rasmussen posted a 10-1 major decision over Elijah Jackson at 157 pounds while Gallegos, wrestling in an exhibition match, recorded a 12-0 major decision over Paul Woodman at 165.
Other winners for the Green squad included Britain Longmire with an 8-2 decision over Cody Tow at 125 and Damien Arredondo with an 8-2 win over Luke McDonald at 149.
The three Mustangs earning wins for the Gold squad were Brandan Rocha at 133, Sean Dougherty at 184 and Atticus Disney at 285.
Rocha was a 12-6 winner over Chris Calcagno while Dougherty outlasted Derrick Hawkins 9-7. In the final bout, Disney scored a late takedown and riding time to beat Kelan Bragg 8-4.
No matches were held at 141, 174 and 197 due in part to the fact that new head coach Brendan Buckley and four of his wrestlers who competed in the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming on Saturday were stranded in Denver on Sunday on the trip home due to weather.
Cal Poly will visit Cal State Bakersfield on Friday for a Pacific-12 Conference dual meet at 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center.

Olympic Silver Medalist Kelly Hired as Assistant Wrestling Coach
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Jamill Kelly, silver medalist in the 2004 Summer Olympics, has been hired as an assistant wrestling coach at Cal Poly.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Mustang director of athletics Don Oberhelman as well as Brendan Buckley, hired June 21 as Cal Poly's head wrestling coach. Buckley previously was head coach at Columbia for 11 seasons.
Kelly was a two-time NCAA qualifier wrestling for Oklahoma State and lettered twice in the sport after attending Lassen Community College for one year. He is a graduate of Atwater High School near Merced.
"I am thrilled to begin working with an Olympic silver medalist like Kelly," said Buckley. "It was important that we hire someone with California roots, a strong freestyle wrestling background, and someone that cannot only teach the sport but also serve as a terrific role model to our student-athletes.
"On all accounts, Jamill excels and I truly believe we hit a grand slam with his hiring," Buckley added. "This was our first step in the next era of Cal Poly wrestling and I am excited to begin working with Jamill."

Cal Poly Hires Brendan Buckley as Head Wrestling Coach
-- Cal Poly Wrestling --
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Brendan Buckley, head wrestling coach at Ivy League member Columbia University in New York for the last 11 seasons, has been named Cal Poly's head wrestling coach.
Mustang director of athletics Don Oberhelman tapped Buckley to succeed John Azevedo, who retired this month after 10 seasons at Cal Poly, the last eight years as head coach, and Mark Perry, who resigned in April to become associate head coach at the University of Illinois. Azevedo and Perry served as co-head coaches at Cal Poly for the 2010-11 season.
Buckley will assume his new role on July 5.
"Brendan has an excellent record in developing student-athletes," said Oberhelman. "Brendan has demonstrated that he knows how to fulfill his first responsibility as a coach, which is to make sure we honor our commitment to our student-athletes' academic achievement. We've hired the right coach to ensure we continue to honor those ideals.
"Brendan also believes, as I do, that all of our student-athletes should strive to leave Cal Poly with a diploma and a championship," Oberhelman added. "I'm very excited about what he will accomplish at Cal Poly."
Buckley, who earned a 14-3 win at 142 pounds in Fresno State's 24-16 dual meet victory against Cal Poly in 1997 at Mott Gym, praised Cal Poly's reputation for athletic and academic excellence.
"Cal Poly athletics has a rich tradition that I am well aware of. My goal is to add to those traditions," Buckley said. "I am really excited to be here and I can't wait to begin working with the team. We will strive for excellence on the mat and in the classroom."
Buckley received the Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award for NCAA Division I on May 31. Presented by the National Wrestling Coaches Association the award recognizes an outstanding coach who epitomizes the qualities and characteristics of a role model and mentor for developing young student-athletes.
Last year, Buckley led the Lions to a 9-6 overall record and a third-place finish in the Ivy League. The team placed seventh overall at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships in March and two wrestlers advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Division I National Championship.
Off the mat, Columbia shined in the classroom as well, ranking third nationally with a 3.2917 team cumulative grade-point average. The Lions have been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic Team each year under Buckley's guidance and have ranked in the top 10 in five of those years.
Buckley's accomplishments at Columbia include five years of nationally ranked recruiting classes, 20 NCAA qualifiers and a school-record eight EIWA placewinners in the 2006-07 season.
In the last six years, Columbia has earned 26 All-Ivy League selections, 16 NCAA qualifiers and the program's first All-American in 23 years. Matt Palmer finished eighth in the 2005 and 2007 NCAA Championships at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. In 2008-09, Buckley coached heavyweight Ryan Flores to the program's first EIWA title since 1995.
Buckley was named EIWA Coach of the Year as he led the Lions to a fourth-place finish at the 2005 EIWA Championships, the team's best finish at the meet since 1931. The Lions also won the EIWA Wrestling Officials Sportsmanship Award.
Columbia made further improvements in 2007, as the team earned its first-ever top 25 ranking, eight wrestlers placed at the EIWA Championships, four team members qualified for nationals and Palmer earned his second All-America honor.
Buckley, 71-84-1 in 11 dual meet seasons with the Lions, came to Columbia from the University of Virginia, where he was the top assistant coach from 1998 to 2000. He helped lead the Cavaliers to two straight top-25 finishes in the NCAA Championships, while helping develop three All-Americans and seven NCAA qualifiers, including national finalist Steve Garland at 125 pounds.
Prior to Virginia, Buckley was the chief assistant coach at UC Davis as well as at Sacramento City College. During his tenure at Sacramento CC, five wrestlers earned All-America status.
Originally from Long Island, Buckley lived in Buffalo, N.Y., before moving to Orlando, Fla. He was a high school All-American and Florida state champion at 135 pounds for Lake Howell High and then starred at Clemson where he made the freshman All-American team his first year and reached the NCAA Round of 16 as a 142-pound sophomore.
When Clemson dropped wrestling after the 1994-95 season, Buckley transferred to Fresno State, where he wrestled under Dennis DeLiddo. Buckley was a Western Athletic Conference champion for the Bulldogs and earned All-America status with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championship at 142 pounds in 1997.
Buckley graduated from Fresno State in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in speech communication and completed his master's degree in sports management at Columbia. Buckley and his wife Julia will celebrate their first wedding anniversary Aug. 28.
Cal Poly to Compete in Pacific-10 Conference Championships
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Boris Novachkov and Barrett Abel will defend
individual titles as the Cal Poly wrestling team, presented by Meathead
Movers, competes in the Pacific 10 Conference Championships on Sunday in
Gill Coliseum at Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore.
Novachkov claimed the Pac-10 championship at 133 pounds last year and will
take a 24-1 record and No. 5 national ranking (InterMat) into the 141-pound
division this week.
Unranked Barrett Abel captured the 149-pound title a year ago while
wrestling for UC Davis and also moved up a weight class this season. He will
compete at 157 pounds armed with a 27-8 record.
Cal Poly's other top contenders for individual titles include Filip
Novachkov at 141, Ryan DesRoches at 165, Ryan Smith at 197 and Atticus
Disney at 285.
"This is what you train for; we've been training since last March for this
kind of event," said Mustang co-head coach Mark Perry. "We feel good, we
know the matchups going in and we feel capable that we can win all 10 weight
classes. We have to take it one match at a time to give ourselves a chance
to take out Boise State."
Oregon State claimed the team title a year ago with 127 points, followed by
Boise State at 125 and Cal Poly at 120. The Broncos are favored this time
with a No. 5 national ranking.
"We would have to wrestle basically perfect (to win the Pac-10 title)," said
Perry. "We would need some things to fall into place, but our guys are ready
and confident. If everyone goes out and performs to the best of their
ability, we can give ourselves a chance. Last year we lost Pac-10 by seven
points. We hope it's that kind of battle again and we feel more prepared and
ready to go.
"You're probably not going to see a whole a lot of upsets in the Pac-10s
until the semifinals or even the finals. "That's why we have a shot to win
this tournament. If we can put the guys that are supposed to be in the
finals in the finals and have one or two upsets along the way, we'll be
right there for the team title."
Cal Poly won nine of its 11 duals this season, losing only to Boise State
29-6 on Jan. 23 and to Stanford 21-15 on Feb. 11. The Mustangs are ranked

Ryan Smith.
The Mustang 197-pound wrestler was 0-4 in his collegiate career against Cal
State Bakersfield's Riley Orozco before earning a 9-7 overtime decision and
clinching No. 22 Cal Poly's 23-12 Pac-10 dual meet victory over the

28 seconds into the first overtime period, improving to 13-5 on the season.
Smith's victory gave Cal Poly an insurmountable 23-9 lead with one bout
remaining. The Mustangs are 7-1 in duals this season, including a 3-1 mark
in Pac-10 matches. Cal State Bakersfield fell to 3-4 and 1-2.
Orozco had beaten Smith three times in the 2009-10 season by 9-4, 3-1 and

season.
Novachkov, ranked No. 4 in the nation by InterMat, improved to 21-1 on the

a takedown early in the first period before escaping and turning the tables
with a takedown of his own, pinning Box moments later.
Filip Novachkov, wrestling two weight classes up at 149, survived a scare
with a 12-10 overtime decision over John Cardenas. Novachkov, ranked No. 14
at 133, is 8-6 on the year after rallying from an 8-5 second-period deficit.
Novachkov twice surrendered a reversal and two-point near fall in the second
period as Cardenas built his three-point advantage. The Mustang senior
overcame the deficit with two takedowns in the final period, the latter with
three seconds left, and 2:26 of riding time to knot the bout at 10-10.
Novachkov's fifth takedown of the match with eight seconds remaining in the
first overtime period ended the first of Cal Poly's two overtime wins.
Britain Longmire and Ryan DesRoches both registered 5-2 decisions to help
Cal Poly build its 20-3 cushion.

lead and holding on, while DesRoches, ranked No. 16, overcame an early
first-period takedown to beat Trevor Hall at 165 pounds. Longmire is now
12-7 on the year while DesRoches improved to 27-5.

before Smith's overtime decision wrapped up the dual meet victory for
Mustang co-head coaches John Azevedo, who wrestled at Cal State Bakersfield
more than 30 years ago, and Mark Perry.

Cal Poly to Open 2010-11 Season With Dual Meet on Saturday
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly, coming off a season in which it posted
an 8-4 dual meet record, finished third in the Pacific-10 Conference
Championships and produced a pair of NCAA Division I All-Americans,
officially opens its 2010-11 wrestling campaign Saturday with a 2 p.m.
Pac-10 dual meet against Cal State Fullerton in Mott Gym.
The Mustangs are ranked as high as No. 19 in the preseason polls and have as
many as seven ranked wrestlers while Cal State Fullerton is unranked as a
team but has three matmen in the individual rankings. Cal Poly beat the
Titans 26-13 in last year's dual meet at Fullerton.
Cal Poly sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and four of them
return. Two captured All-American honors -- Chase Pami finished second at
157 pounds and Boris Novachkov was seventh at 133 pounds. Pami is gone, but
back for another season of competition are Boris Novachkov and three other
national qualifiers -- Filip Novachkov, Ryan DesRoches and Nick Fisher.
The 2010-11 roster features eight returning Pac-10 Conference Championship
placewinners, including 133-pound champion Boris Novachkov.
"Coming off the success we had last season, we have high expectations for
this group of guys," said Perry. "We're right there to win the Pac-10 and
that will be our main sight this year, to win the conference title.
"There are a lot of positives carrying over to this year and we want to put
as many All-Americans and National Champions on the podium in March," Perry
added. "We have the talent to do it. We just need to have self belief and
our wrestlers have to believe in the system they're in."
Added Azevedo, entering his eighth season as head coach, "We definitely are
looking to be one of the top teams in the Pac-10, realizing that Boise State
is ranked No. 2 in the country. We have a group of guys who could be right
up there. Our goal is to win the conference and get six or seven wrestlers
to the nationals."
The Novachkov brothers will switch weight classes this year, with Boris
taking the 141-pound slot and Filip dropping to 133.
Boris Novachkov finished his sophomore season with a 28-5 overall record, a
Pac-10 title and a seventh-place national finish. He was 8-2 in dual meets
and notched four pins on the year.
Filip Novachkov, now a senior, was 25-8 a year ago, finishing second in the
Pac-10 finals and posting a 2-2 mark at the nationals. He was 11-1 in dual
meets and recorded seven falls for the season.
Other returning Pac-10 placewinners are Fisher (second at 149 pounds), Ryan
Smith (second at 197), Ryan DesRoches (third at 174), Steven Vasquez (sixth
at 165), Kelan Bragg (sixth at 184) and Jim Powers (seventh at 197).
DesRoches led the Mustangs with 17 falls a year ago, finishing the season
34-10 overall and 9-2 in dual meets. Fisher was 17-8 a year ago with seven
falls while Smith was 19-11 with a pair of falls. Vasquez notched a 17-14
record and Bragg was 9-14.
DesRoches will drop one weight class to 165 this year while Vasquez takes
over at 174. Bragg has slimmed down to 184 to make room for Smith at 197.
The Mustang roster also is bolstered by the addition of three transfers --
157-pounder Barrett Abel and 184-pounder Stephan Hampton from UC Davis and
285-pounder Atticus Disney from Minnesota. Abel was a Pac-10 champion a year
ago and finished the season 21-9.
Cal Poly's lineup for Saturday's dual meet is expected to include Jake
Tanenbaum at 125, Filip Novachkov at 133, Boris Novachkov at 141, Geoffrey
Doss at 149, Abel at 157, DesRoches at 165, Vasquez at 174, Bragg at 184,
Smith at 197 and Disney at 285.
Filip Novachkov is ranked as high as No. 5 at 133 while Boris Novachkov is
ranked as high as No. 9 at 141. Other ranked Mustang wrestlers in the
preseason include No. 15 Fisher at 149, No. 16 Abel at 157, No. 25 DesRoches
at 174, No. 25 Smith at 197 and No. 25 Disney at 285.
Cal State Fullerton's trio of ranked wrestlers are 125-pounder Andre
Gonzalez (16th), 141-pounder Adin Duenas (No. 10) and 285-pounder Kurt
Klimek (No. 17).
Duenas, the Pac-10 champion at 141 last year and a two-time NCAA qualifier,
is not slated to wrestle Saturday. Gonzalez and Klimek both were fourth in
the Pac-10s a year ago.
Cal State Fullerton head coach Dan Hicks (Oregon State '80) is in his ninth
season and has compiled a 70-66-1 dual meet record.
In addition to Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly has 10 other dual meets on the
schedule, including home dates with Wyoming and Cal State Bakersfield, and
also will compete in the Fullerton Open, Midlands Open, Las Vegas
Invitational, the Reno Tournament of Champions and the All-California Open.
The 2011 Pac-10 finals are slated for Feb. 27 at Oregon State and the NCAA
Championships will be held March 17-19 in Philadelphia.
Tyrel Todd Hired as Assistant Wrestling Coach at Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Tyrel Todd, a three-time NCAA All-American and
the 2009 Big Ten Conference champion at 197 pounds while wrestling at
Michigan, has been hired as an assistant wrestling coach at Cal Poly.
Mustang co-head coaches John Azevedo and Mark Perry made the announcement
Monday. Todd is expected to continue training for Olympic and World teams
while coaching the Mustang wrestlers.
"Bringing Tyrel Todd on board is a huge asset for our program in every way
possible," said Perry. "He is one of the top big guy coaches in the country
and he will be training for World and Olympic titles right along side our
athletes, so it will bring extra motivation in the room.
"Tyrel brings the type of passion and intensity we want out of our athletes
and we look for it to rub off on them," Perry added. "We believe Tyrel will
be a big part of Cal Poly's success toward moving to the top of the national
rankings."
Todd placed third as a junior (2008), fourth as a senior (2009) and fifth as
a sophomore (2007) at the nationals and also was a national qualifier as a
freshman in 2006. He was a Cliff Keen Invitational champion at 184 pounds in
2007 and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2006.
Todd's career record at Michigan was 121-30, including a 54-11 mark in dual
meets. He recorded 22 career falls, including 10 as a senior.
In addition to his Big Ten title in 2009, Todd placed second in 2008, third
in 2007 and fifth in 2006. He posted a 25-3 record as a senior, 34-4 as a
junior and 28-8 as a sophomore. In his junior season he put together a
career-best and team-high 21-match winning streak.
Todd, a 2004 graduate of Bozeman High School in Montana, was a three-time
Montana state champion and state runner-up as a freshman, compiling a 136-6
career prep record, including undefeated sophomore and junior seasons. He
also competed in football, serving as team captain and earning all-state
accolades as a senior.
Todd earned his degree in history at Michigan in 2009 and was an assistant
coach with the Wolverine wrestling team last season. His father Jeff
wrestled at Montana State.
Perry, Azevedo to Serve as Co-Head Cal Poly Wrestling Coaches for 2010-11 Season
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Mark Perry, who recently completed his first
season as assistant wrestling coach at Cal Poly, and seven-year Mustang head
coach John Azevedo will serve as co-head coaches beginning with the 2010-11
season.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Cal Poly director of athletics Alison
Cone.
"This move further strengthens our wrestling coaching staff," said Cone.
"Mark's strengths combined with John's attributes will provide us with an
unbeatable coaching combination."
With Perry as his assistant last season, Azevedo guided Cal Poly to a
third-place Pacific-10 Conference finish and produced a pair of NCAA
All-Americans. He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year by
D1CollegeWrestling.net.
"I think this will be great experience for Mark and his future as a head
coach," said Azevedo.
When Perry was hired as assistant coach last summer, Azevedo said, "I
believe his passion for wrestling and winning will help Cal Poly wrestling
go to the next level of becoming the best. Mark brings an extensive amount
of individual and team success to the program."
Perry, a two-time national champion and four-time All-American at Iowa,
spent the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach at Penn State before coming
to Cal Poly a year ago.
"Being promoted to co-head coach is a huge honor for me and I am confident
that I will be able to continue to help this program move forward in its
quest toward winning Pac-10 titles and NCAA trophies," said Perry. "The
future of Cal Poly wrestling is going to be exciting. I guarantee our fans
and alumni we are going to be one of the top programs in the country on a
consistent basis in the near future.
"Wrestling fans in California are excited about what is going on at Cal Poly
and our wrestlers will continue to work toward winning NCAA titles," Perry
added.
The Mustangs rebounded from a tough 2008-09 campaign by finishing just seven
points shy of Pac-10 champion Oregon State. Chase Pami finished second at
157 pounds in both the Pac-10 and NCAA finals while Boris Novachkov won a
Pac-10 title at 133 and placed seventh nationally.
Their finish marked the first time in six seasons that multiple wrestlers
finished as All-Americans at Cal Poly. Azevedo led the Mustangs to an 8-4
dual meet record, including a 5-2 mark in Pac-10 matches.
Azevedo, 45-61 in dual meets as Mustang head coach, has guided nine Mustangs
to All-American honors and seven Pac-10 champions.
He was an assistant under Lennis Cowell for two years before taking over the
head job with the Mustangs in 2003. His coaching career also includes one
year as a graduate assistant at Arizona State (1980-81), three years as
assistant coach at Cal State Bakersfield (1981-84), two years as an
assistant as Notre Dame (1984-86), five years as an assistant coach at
Wisconsin (1986-91) and 12 seasons as head coach at Calvary Chapel High in
Santa Ana (1991-2003), leading the wrestling program to seven state
championships and one runner-up finish.
Calvary Chapel also garnered 11 league titles, 10 CIF-Southern Section team
championships, and posted a 183-18 dual meet record under Azevedo's
direction. The program also spawned 23 NCAA Division 1 wrestlers. Azevedo
was named National High School Coach of the Year in 1993 and California
Coach of the Year seven times.
As a collegian, Azevedo won an NCAA title in 1980 while at Cal State
Bakersfield, after two runner-up finishes and three NCAA Division II titles.
He amassed a 122-2 collegiate record and was named team captain three times.
He is also a member of the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Azevedo was also a member of the 1980 United States Olympic team (the United
States boycotted those summer games in Moscow) and won a national freestyle
championship in 1981. He placed fourth at the World Championships in 1982.
Azevedo earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Cal State
Bakersfield in 1981.
Perry was the NCAA individual national champion in 2007 and 2008 while
helping the Iowa Hawkeyes to a team championship in 2008.
With his title in 2008, Perry became the 17th four-time All-American and
14th two-time national champion in NCAA history. During his 2007 NCAA run,
Perry defeated two-time NCAA champion Johny Hendricks in the finals on his
way to a 32-5 record.
Both his NCAA titles came at 165 pounds.
As a sophomore at the NCAAs, Perry placed third at 174 pounds, earning the
Gorriaran Trophy for pinning four opponents at the championships. As a
freshman he placed second at 165 pounds, posting a 32-5 overall record.
Perry was a team captain all four years at Iowa and was a Big Ten Conference
finalist four times as well, capturing one title in 2007. He also was a
four-time finalist in the prestigious Midlands Wrestling Tournament, earning
two titles.
Perry was named National Wrestling Coaches Association rookie of the year in
2005 and University of Iowa athlete of the year in 2007.
Perry was a two-time prep national champion while attending Blair Academy,
located 60 miles west of New York City, in rural Warren County, New Jersey.
He was a three-time AISCS High School All-American while posting a career
169-7 record.
Perry earned his bachelor of arts degree in art from the University of Iowa
in 2008.

year as he fell 5-1 to Adam Hall of Boise State in the final round.

and also fell 13-7 to Ty Vinson of Oregon State in the match for fifth and
sixth place.
And at 285, Jim Powers was a 4-2 winner over Dylan Rush of Stanford for
seventh place.

Cal Poly to Compete in Pac-10 Championships at UC Davis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly, which has finished second in the
Pacific-10 Conference Wrestling Championships, most recently in 2004 and
2006, seeks its first conference team title this weekend.
UC Davis will host the Pac-10 Championships on Friday and Saturday at The
Pavilion. Competition begins at noon each day with the championship finals
slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Seedings will be made Thursday night during a coaches meeting.
Four of the eight teams competing in the championships are ranked in the top
20 by WIN Magazine. Boise State, the two-time defending Pac-10 champion, is
ranked No. 9 while Oregon State is No. 14, Cal Poly No. 15 and Arizona State
No. 20.
Five of the 10 Mustangs slated to compete in the Pac-10 Championships are
former placewinners, led by two-time conference champion Chase Pami at 157
pounds.
Pami, who also placed fourth in 2007, will take a 23-5 record into this
weekend's competition. He sports a 93-33 career mark and earned NCAA
All-American honors with a seventh-place finish a year ago.
In last year's meet, Filip Novachkov placed third at 133 pounds, Ryan
DesRoches was fourth at 174 and Micah Ferguson sixth at 125. Ferguson also

Also competing for Cal Poly this weekend will be Nick Fisher at 149, Steven
Vasquez at 165, Kelan Bragg at 184, Ryan Smith at 197 and Jim Powers at 285.
Pami is ranked No. 2 in the Pac-10 at 157 and his chief nemesis likely will

five times in the last two years and Pami's lone victory was a 4-3 overtime
decision in last year's Pac-10 finals.
Filip Novachkov (21-5) is ranked No. 2 at 141 with a 20-5 record. The
top-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10 at 141 is Boise State's Levi Jones and the

Boris Novachkov (21-3) is ranked No. 4 at 133 and Andrew Hochstrasser is the
No. 1-ranked wrestler in the weight class. They did not meet in the dual
meet Jan. 24 at Cal Poly as Hochstrasser was recovering from a knee injury.
DesRoches (31-7) is ranked No. 3 in the conference at 174 and his top
challengers will be No. 1 Colby Covington of Oregon State and No. 2 Nate Lee
of Boise State. DesRoches has not wrestled Covington and he has lost three

Ryan Smith (17-10) is ranked No. 3 at 197 and has dropped 3-1 decisions to
both No. 1 Riley Orozco of Cal State Bakersfield and No. 2 Chad Hanke of
Oregon State this season. Smith also fell 13-3 to Orozco in the Pac-10
finals a year ago.
Fisher (15-5) sports a No. 4 Pac-10 ranking, trailing No. 1 Jason Chamberlin
of Boise State, Barrett Abel of UC Davis and Vicente Varela of Arizona
State. Fisher won by injury default against Abel and lost to Chamberlin and
Varela by decision in dual meets this season.
The NCAA Division I National Championships will be held March 18-20 at the
Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.

Cal Poly Ends Dual Meet Schedule, Beats UC Davis 34-7
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly seniors Micah Ferguson and Chase Pami
earned victories in their final duals as Mustangs and junior Filip Novachkov
won by a fall as the No. 16 Mustangs defeated UC Davis 34-7 in a Pacific-10
Conference dual wrestling meet Friday night before 705 in Mott Gym.
Cal Poly completed the dual meet portion of its 2009-10 schedule with an 8-4
overall mark and 5-2 in Pac-10 duals. UC Davis fell to 3-11 and 1-5 with
another Pac-10 dual Saturday night at Cal State Bakersfield.
Ferguson earned a 9-4 decision over Aggie 125-pounder Chris Armendariz in
the opening bout of the dual meet. Novachkov's pin over Bryan Osuna in 1
minute, 24 seconds, gave Cal Poly a 9-3 advantage and Pami posted a 13-2
major decision over Trevor Machado at 157 to stake the Mustangs to a 19-3
advantage.
Novachkov, ranked fifth in the nation at 141, improved to 21-5 on the year
while Pami, ranked No. 11, now sports a 23-5 mark.
After intermission to acknowledge Cal Poly's five seniors -- Ferguson, Pami,
David Christian, Eric Maldonado and Brandyn Tepper -- the Mustangs won four
more bouts to pull away.
Steven Vasquez and Kelan Bragg earned victories by decision, Ryan DesRoches
won by major decision and Ryan Smith scored a technical fall for Cal Poly.
Vasquez scored a takedown late in the second period, the difference in a 3-1
decision over Joey Wilson at 165 pounds.
DesRoches, ranked 19th this week, recorded eight takedowns for a 16-8 lead,
then secured a two-point near fall and nearly four minutes of riding time en

takedowns, a three-point near fall and two penalty points for a 23-8
technical fall against Abe Otrambo at 197.
Cal Poly's other victory was recorded by 149-pounder Nick Fisher. Shortly
after scoring a reversal late in the second period to cut his deficit
against Barrett Abel to 6-3, Abel injured his neck and was knocked
unconscious briefly. Because he lost consciousness, Abel, ranked 15th in the
nation in his weight class, needed a doctor's consent to continue and was
forced to default the match.
UC Davis heavyweight Ricky Alcala, ranked 16th at 285 pounds, posted a 14-5
major decision against Cal Poly's Jim Powers in the final bout.
In the only matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 15 Brandon Low of UC

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- No. 18 Oregon State won four of the final five
bouts, including a fall by Colby Covington at 174 pounds, to rally from a

Oregon State won the first two bouts as Jason Lara earned an 11-5 decision

Cal Poly Holds Off Arizona State, 20-18, for Dual Meet Victory
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Technical falls by Ryan Smith and Filip Novachkov
plus a major decision by Chase Pami gave No. 16 Cal Poly just enough bonus
points to edge Arizona State 20-18 in a Pacific-10 Conference dual meet
Friday night before 672 in Mott Gym.
The Mustangs forfeited the bout at 125 but did not give up any more bonus
points as Arizona State secured four wins by decision. Each team won five
matches.
With the win, Cal Poly improved to 7-3 for the season and 4-1 in Pac-10 dual
meets. Arizona State fell to 8-6 and 3-2.
Smith scored five takedowns in the first period in racing to a 10-4
advantage, then secured four more takedowns and a three-point near fall in
the second period en route to his technical fall win by a 23-7 count at 4:55
against Michael Hawkins in the 197-pound bout.
Smith, still bidding for his first national ranking of the season, improved
his record to 16-9 with his first technical fall of the year.
After Arizona State won the next two matches to take a 9-5 lead, Mustang
133-pounder Boris Novachkov, ranked fifth in the nation, earned a 7-2 win
over unranked Ben Ashmore with two takedowns, one escape, one penalty point
and riding time.
Novachkov improved to 21-1 on the year.
Cal Poly moved back on top, 13-9, with Filip Novachkov's 16-1 technical fall
(4:28) over Chris Drouin in a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers at 141

takedowns and an escape for his second technical fall of the year. Drouin is
ranked No. 15.
Filip Novachkov is now 19-5 for the season while Drouin fell to 16-9.
Arizona State closed the gap to 13-12 with Vicente Varela's 9-4 win over
Mustang Nick Fisher at 149, but victories by Pami and 174-pounder Ryan
DesRoches down the stretch kept Cal Poly out of trouble.
Pami recorded eight takedowns, one escape and riding time on his way to an
18-6 major decision over Te Edwards at 157. Pami, ranked No. 11 this week
and a two-time Pac-10 champion, is now 21-5 for the season.
DesRoches gave up just two escapes in an 8-2 decision over Eric Starks at
174, giving Cal Poly a 20-15 advantage with one bout to go. DesRoches,
ranked 19th this week, is 29-7 on the year.
Mustang 184-pounder Kelan Bragg battled Jake Meredith tough throughout the
match, eventually dropping an 8-6 decision in a matchup of unranked
wrestlers. Bragg closed the gap to 6-5 with a takedown midway through the
second period, but Meredith battled through a pair of injury timeouts for
his left knee with an early takedown in the final period and held on for the
win.

Cal Poly Hold on to Beat Cal State Bakersfield, 22-18
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Needing a victory in the final match, Cal Poly
149-pounder Eric Maldonado earned a technical fall as the Mustangs beat Cal
State Bakersfield 22-18 in a Pacific-10 Conference dual wrestling meet
Wednesday night at the Icardo Center.
The Mustangs, who at 3-0 have already equalled their dual meet win total of
a year ago, received victories from Maldonado, Chase Pami, Ryan DesRoches
and the Novachkov brothers, Boris and Filip.
Cal Poly sent four nationally ranked wrestlers into the dual meet while the
Roadrunners had a pair. None of the six met each other and all six were
winners.
Pami, Cal Poly's lone returning NCAA All-American, opened the dual meet with
a 15-4 major decision against Andrew Balch at 157 pounds. Pami, ranked Nos.
4, 5 and 6 by various publications, improved to 11-2 on the year.
DesRoches continued his mastery pinning opponents, earning a fall in 7
minutes, 13 seconds, over Troy Goodban at 174 pounds. DesRoches, ranked for
the first time this season at No. 25 by D1CollegeWrestling.net this week,
scored a reversal for a 21-7 lead 15 seconds into the final period and
pinned Goodban shortly thereafter for his 13th fall of the season. He is
16-4 on the year.
Cal State Bakersfield won the next four matches to take an 18-10 lead. The
victories included a 9-4 decision by No. 15-16-18 Riley Orozco over Mustang
Ryan Smith at 197 and a 3-1 decision by Nos. 9-10 Mitch Monteiro against Jim
Powers at 285.
Cal Poly rallied with wins in the final three bouts for the dual meet
victory, avenging last year's 24-10 loss to the Roadrunners in Mott Gym.
Sophomore Boris Novachkov, ranked Nos. 7-8-9 this week, blanked Justin
Durham with a 9-0 major decision at 133, scoring three takedowns, one
escape, one penalty point and riding time. Novachkov is now 12-0 on the
year.
His brother, Filip Novachkov, followed with a 7-5 win over Elijah Nacita at
141, improving to 12-2. Novachkov, ranked Nos. 3, 4 and 8, led all the way
with three takedowns and an escape as Cal Poly closed the gap to 18-17.
Finally, Maldonado wrapped up the Mustang dual meet victory with his 22-7
technical fall against Calvin Miller at 149. Maldonado, now 3-2 this
season, led 2-1 after the first period and 7-2 after the second period
before posting six takedowns and a two-point near fall in the final period
to win going away.
Cal State Bakersfield had won five of the last six meetings between the two
schools after the Mustangs earned three straight wins from 2001-03. The
Roadrunners still lead the all-time series 25-15-2 against Cal Poly.
The Mustangs, ranked as high as No. 16 this week, beat Cal State Fullerton
26-13 on Nov. 14 and upset then-No. 10-ranked Missouri 22-15 on Nov. 20. Cal
State Bakersfield, which fell 31-9 to No. 4 Minnesota in November, is now

Cal Poly's 2009 Recruiting Class Ranked No. 6 by InterMat
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly's 2009 class of five recruits, announced
two weeks ago, has been judged as the sixth best in the nation by InterMat.
In its Early Period Recruiting Class Rankings, InterMat lists Iowa as No. 1,
followed by Northwestern and Iowa State. Penn State and Cornell round out
the top five.
Cal Poly's signees -- five high school wrestlers -- to the National Letter
of Intent included a pair of state champions and three state placewinners.
"The Cal Poly program is not one usually seen toward the top of the
collegiate wrestling landscape or the recruiting rankings," according to a
release by InterMat on its Web site. "However, this class of five wrestlers
-- four of them ranked inside the Top 100 recruits for the Class of 2010 --
is clearly among the best classes of the early period.
"Mark Perry, who is in his first season as an assistant coach at Cal Poly,
is spearheading the recruiting and has made a tremendous impact in a
relatively short period of time," the release adds.
Mustang recruits on the Top 100 include No. 42 Jesse Delgado of Gilroy High
School, No. 83 Tucker Armstrong of Kenton Ridge High School in Springfield,
Ohio, No. 93 Drew Meulman of St. Francis High School in Mountain View and
No. 95 Travis Gallegos of Foothill High School in Palo Cedro, Calif.
"We're very excited that some of the best wrestlers in California and the
nation have signed with Cal Poly," said Mustang head coach John Azevedo.
"Being ranked sixth shows we are headed in the right direction."
Added Perry: "Coach Azevedo and I are very pleased with how our early
signing period class has turned out. These five student-athletes have the
mindset and attitude we want in every one of our athletes. They want to be
NCAA champions and they want team titles.
"As the spring signing period is just around the corner, we are at work
looking to sign guys who will make an immediate impact on the program,"
Perry said. "The Cal Poly wrestling staff is working very hard in all areas
to bring Pac-10 and national championships to the West!"
In InterMat's high school weight class rankings, Delgado is No. 5 at 119,
Armstrong is No. 10 at 140, Meulman is No. 7 at 285, Gallegos is No. 10 at
160 and Dominic Kastl of Gilroy High School, the fifth Mustang signee, is
No. 16 at 160.

Cowell. "
Having the opportunity, I was fortunate to work with John McCutcheon
and his predecessor Ken Walker who provided every possible opportunity
for student-athletes to compete."
Cowell completed his 18th season as the Mustangs head coach

records in dual matches, 14 Pac-10 Conference individual champions,
eight Division I All-Americans and three top-five individual place
