Garren Brothers Score Major Points For Wolfpack
RALEIGH, N.C. * Scott Garren got a pin and Zach Garren got a major decision that clinched the team victory Saturday as NC State defeated Maryland 32-3 in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match at Reynolds Coliseum.
The victory lifted the Wolfpack to 3-2 overall in dual-match competition,
2-0 and in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland
fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The match started with a high-scoring bout at 141 between NC State's
Alex Hernandez and Maryland's Jason Gribschaw. Hernandez fell
behind early in the first period and trailed 4-1 and 7-4, but
a reversal late in the first period and a near fall early in the
second propelled Hernandez to a 13-10 decision and a 3-0 team
lead for NC State.
The Terps' Jerad Vellecco also jumped to an early, moving ahead
4-0 after a first-period takedown and near fall in the 149-pound
match, but the Wolfpack's Jake Giamoni scored six unanswered points,
and went on to record a 10-7 decision that gave the Wolfpack a
6-0 lead in the team score.
Scott Garren, ranked No. 14 nationally at 157 in the latest intermat.com
poll, never trailed in his bout with Luke Stauffer, building a
9-3 lead in the second period before pinning Stauffer at the 4:43
mark to make it 12-0, Wolfpack. Dustin Kawa then made it 16-0
with an easy 13-4 major decision over Maryland's John Antonelli.
Patrick Cissne got Maryland on the scoreboard with a 3-2 decision
over Rick Brownlee at 174, but Daniel Humphries nearly pinned
the Terps' Dan Scheets and came away with an 11-4 decision at
184 thanks to two reversals and a pair of three-point near falls.
That gave the Wolfpack a 19-3 lead in the team scoring, and Zach
Garren clinched the team win for the Pack with an 11-3 major decision
over Jerry Afari at 197. That gave NC State a 23-3 lead with three
bouts remaining.
Wolfpack freshman Jainor Palma defeated Barry Stein 7-4, putting
the bout away with a reversal and a near fall early in the third
period, and Jeremy Hartrum made it 29-3 in favor of NC State with
a 3-2 decision over Maryland's Matt Pandullo.
The Wolfpack's Daniel Pacitti took the final bout of the afternoon
with a 5-2 decision over Maryland's Mike Lupa at 133.
