Central Wrestlers in California Tourney

PELLA-Escaping a monotonous week of winter break training on campus, the Central College wrestling team travels to California for the Menlo (Calif.) Invitational.

The 14-team tourney starts at 11 a.m. (Iowa time) Sunday in Atherton, Calif. The Dutch depart Thursday morning and return Wednesday.

The field features a cross section of NCAA Division I, II and III schools along with NAIA and junior college opposition and isn't necessarily a break from the competition level the Dutch encounter in the powerful Iowa Conference. Host Menlo College, which competes in the NCAA Division III in some sports, is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA national poll. Also in the field
are No. 11 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), No. 17 Simon Fraser (B.C.), Division I Stanford, UC Davis and Cal State-Bakersfield, as well as Douglas (B.C.), Southern Oregon, San Francisco State, St. Cloud State (Minn.), San Jose State and Fresno Pacific (Calif.).

Coach Eric Van Kley took his Great Falls (Mont.) squad to the Menlo tourney during the 2005-06 season.

"The thing I really like is going against teams we haven't seen all year and probably won't see again," he said. "So our guys just need to focus on wrestling each match.

"At the same time, it's very good competition. We'll find out what we're doing well coming out of the break and what we need to improve on."

It's the first visit ever to Menlo by a Dutch athletics team. Central's only head-to-head meeting with the Oaks came in the first round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs in Pella in 1987.

The Dutch will remain in the Bay area for a few days of sightseeing as well as some intense training.

"We want to get a lot of good training at this time of year but you don't want the kids getting stagnant," Van Kley said. "This helps avoid that. It's a new adventure for them."

Central hasn't competed since the taking fifth in the 12-team Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Invitational Dec. 6. But Van Kley likes the strides made by Central's freshman-dominated lineup.

"I think we're right on track," he said. "As young as we are, you really want to balance keeping the expectation level high but still being patient. We've made a lot of progress. There's definitely a big learning curve but I'm pleased with the work ethic they've shown."

Central's most successful wrestler in the early going, 141-pounder Curtis Hobbs (sophomore, Grinnell), is the only one listed as questionable for Sunday's tournament. He's 10-5 but was injured at the Milwaukee tourney.

Two other Dutch wrestlers sport winning marks. Tommy Van Reterghem (freshman, Oskaloosa) is 5-4 at 165 pounds and Kyle Ray (sophomore, Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) is 8-7 at 174. Among those at the .500 mark are Reid Immerman (freshman, Guthrie Center), who is 6-6 at 157 pounds; Jared Hermann (Stockton, Ill.), 3-3 at 157; and Ted Dirkx (sophomore, Alleman, North Polk HS), 3-3 at 285.

After returning to Iowa next week, the Dutch are back on the road Jan. 10 for the Knox College Duals at Galesburg, Ill.

PELLA-Sophomores Curtis Hobbs (Grinnell) at 141 pounds and Nate Fell (Avoca, AHST HS) at 184 pounds accounted for the Central College wrestling team's only victories in a 39-6 loss to the Univ. of Dubuque Thursday night.

Dubuque, ranked 18th in Division III, was Central's second top 20 opponent in as many dual matches.

Freshman Eric Wilkerson (Toledo, Iowa, South Tama HS) was edged out 3-2 in the opening match of the night but set the tone for a competitive night for the Dutch.

"Eric (Wilkerson) went out their right away and competed hard," said Van Kley. "Even though he lost he really got us into the matches from the beginning."

Hobbs trailed 2-1 after the first period in the 141 pound match but distanced himself from Dubuque's Ben Watts scoring on a reverse and a takedown in the second period on the way to a 10-6 victory. With the win he improved his record to 8-3 on the season.

At 184 pounds Fell pulled out a win when Dubuque's Jake Durbin was called for stalling with under a minute remaining to improve his record to 5-3. Van Kley credited both Fell's and Hobbs' victories to their conditioning.

"We fought and battled at every weight tonight," he said. "And our conditioning really showed in the third period of every match, especially for Curtis (Hobbs) and Nate (Fell)."

Central will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. Saturday to compete in the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Invitational beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Central Closes Wrestling Season at League Meet-eyes Promising Future

WAVERLY-Central College's injury-battered wrestling squad completed its season at the Iowa Conference tournament Thursday, but under energetic first-year coach Eric Van Kley, the Dutch are already looking ahead to 2008-09.

Rapidly improving freshman Ted Dirkx (Alleman, North Polk HS) placed eighth. He scored a first-round victory at 285 pounds. For the second time in 10 days, Dirkx and Simpson's Caleb Shaeffer went into overtime and for the second time, Dirkx came out on top with a 7-5 win. Dirkx then met the top seed, Wartburg's Brian Borchers, and was pinned in 2:59. In the consolation round, Dirkx was defeated by the fourth seed, Jeremy Klein of Loras, 7-1 and in the seventh-place match was pinned by the third seed, Dubuque's Gordon Johnson, in 4:12. Dirkx was leading Johnson 5-2 before suffering the fall. He closed the year at 5-11.

"Ted is really coming into his own," Van Kley said, noting that Dirkx's season got a late start because of football. "He just keeps getting better and better."

Central had three other entries but each was ousted in two matches. Nick Johnson (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) was at 141 pounds, Kevin Yeoman (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) was at 165 and  Christopher Keeran (freshman, Redfield, Panorama HS) was at 197.

"I'm extremely proud of each of them," Van Kley said. "The scoreboard doesn't show it, but Kevin and Nick definitely put together their best tournaments of the year."

Van Kley, who built a powerhouse at the University of Great Falls (Mont.),  leaped head first into the recruiting process when he arrived on campus in  June and he and assistant Jason Zastrow have been working at a furious pace. While this fall's freshman class is far from being wrapped up, early returns are promising.

"We're in a good position," he said. "We've got to have a good two months ahead to make sure we get the right guys on campus and in our program this fall. But I feel real good about the effort our staff and the admission staff members are putting in."

But Van Kley said the Dutch also laid some important groundwork in his first season.

"Two words I use to describe the season are challenging and successful," he said. "It was definitely challenging because we were short on numbers and extremely young. But It was successful because every guy on the team was much improved and the team improved every week. That doesn't always happen. The record doesn't reflect it but we've got something to build on."
Dirkx Gets OT Win for Central Wrestlers

PELLA—Freshman Ted Dirkx (Alleman, North Polk HS) scored an overtime win at 285 pounds but the Central College wrestling team closed out the dual-meet season with a 42-3 defeat against Simpson College Tuesday.

Dirkx was up 1-0 with 20 seconds remaining and was assured of a riding time point before suffering a late reversal against Simpson’s Caleb Shaeffer. But in the overtime Dirkx quickly put Shaeffer on his back, then settled for a 3-point near fall for a 7-2 victory, raising his record to 5-7.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Ted,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “Every time he wrestles, it seems like he’s giving up 40-50 pounds but every time he wrestles, he gives a good effort. That was a big win.”

Simpson (4-10) scored falls at four other weights while picking up three forfeit victories as injury-plagued Central (0-15-1) had just five wrestlers in the lineup. Simpson was open at two weights.

Central’s only remaining regular-season meet is the Iowa Conference tournament Feb. 21 at Waverly. Van Kley said that taking on a field loaded with nationally ranked opposition will be a challenge for his young squad.

“We’ll just stick with the same motto we’ve had all year and that’s to just improve each week,” he said. “We know we’ll have our hands full at the conference meet, but it’s one more opportunity to get a little better and learn what we need to work on. For most of these guys it will be their first conference tournament. I’m excited to see how we do in that kind of environment.”

Injury-battered Central Wrestlers Fall

DUBUQUE-An injury-depleted Central College wrestling team was blanked 55-0 by the University of Dubuque Thursday.

In a meet rescheduled from Tuesday night because of a snowstorm, the Dutch were able to send just three wrestlers, Nick Johnson (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) at 141 pounds, Chris Keeran (freshman, Redfield, Panorama HS) at 197 and Ted Dirkx (freshman, Alleman, North Polk HS) at 285.

"It was a tough situation for our guys with an extremely thin lineup," coach Eric Van Kley said. "But they gave a good effort and wrestled hard. I couldn't be prouder of them."

Central dropped to 0-14-1 while Dubuque is 10-8. The Dutch close the dual-meet season at home Tuesday, taking on Simpson College (3-9) in a 7 p.m. dual at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
Central Wrestling Meet Rescheduled

PELLA-Central College's wrestling dual at the University of Dubuque has been rescheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m.

The meet was originally slated for Tuesday but was postponed because of an anticipated snowstorm.
Dirkx Fifth for Central Wrestlers

SIOUX CITY—Central College’s Ted Dirkx (freshman, Alleman, North Polk HS) recorded his best collegiate outing, placing fifth at the non-scored Briar Cliff Invitational wrestling tourney Saturday

Dirkx posted a 3-2 record competing at 285 pounds. Also a member of the Dutch football squad, Dirkx reported late for wrestling and had compiled a 1-4 record prior to Saturday. Both of his losses were to Justin Kyte of Sioux Falls (S.D.). Kyte was an 11-3 winner  in the first round, but Dirkx fought to within 10-7 in the wrestlebacks.

“Ted really closed the gap,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “He wrestled very well. He got a late start because of football but I thought he really turned the corner this week. He was very aggressive.”

Dirkx was among just five Central wrestlers in the tourney. The Dutch return to dual meet action Tuesday, traveling to the University of Dubuque for a 7 p.m.

Central Wrestlers Fall at League Duals

DECORAH-Central College's young wrestling squad came up short against some of the Iowa Conference's finest at the league duals in Decorah Saturday.

The Dutch were throttled by 20th-ranked Buena Vista 59-0, Cornell 51-3, No. 7 Luther 60-0 and No. 12 Loras 52-0.

The lone winner was freshman Kyle Ray (Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS), who decisioned Cornell's Aaron Kindelsperger at 157 pounds 7-1.

Still, first-year coach Eric Van Kley saw things he liked from the Dutch.

"The scoreboard is in no way indicative of the guys' effort," he said. "We wrestled four good teams that are predominately upperclassmen and for the most part fought hard in every match."

Curtis Hobbs (freshman, Grinnell) pushed Buena Vista's Luke Satern into overtime at 141 pounds before suffering an injury and losing by fall. Hobbs was sidelined the rest of the day.

"Nick Johnson (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) had a really good match against Loras (an 8-5 decision at 141 pounds) and had a chance to win it at the end," Van Kley said. "And Ted Dirkx (freshman, Alleman, North Polk HS) had another solid performance (at 285 pounds).

"We're growing as a team and we're improving, but we're still just very young."

Central travels to Sioux City next Saturday for the Briar Cliff Invitational. The Dutch were seventh in an 11-team field at Briar Cliff last year.

Central College's Hobbs Fourth at Central Tourney
PELLA-Freshman Curtis Hobbs (Grinnell) took fourth place as the Central College wrestling team put together a strong effort at the Central Invitational Saturday.

Hobbs was fourth at 141 pounds while teammate Nick Johnson (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) was sixth. There were no team scores in the 14-team meet at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse.

"From top to bottom that was our best effort of the year," said first-year coach Eric Van Kley. "The kids competed hard, both in the matches that they won and the matches they lost."

Hobbs advanced to the semifinals before settling for fourth with a 3-2 record. Van Kley was especially impressed with a 9-8 quarterfinal victory over Marcus Cobbs.

"He's learned how to battle good college guys in our aggressive style," he said.

After an opening-round setback, Johnson reeled off three straight wins and finished 3-3.

"It was good to see Nick get his first placefinish in two years," Van Kley said. "He's blossoming into a nice college wrestler and it's due to his strong work ethic."

Kyle Ray (freshman, Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) was 2-2 at 157 pounds and Jim Siddall (sophomore, Montgomery, Ill., Oswego HS) was 1-2 at 285.

Top-ranked Wartburg College visits P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium Thursday at 7 p.m.

"It only gets tougher at this time of year in the Iowa Conference," Van Kley said.
Hobbs, Central Wrestlers Come Up Short at Matman Invitational

MOUNT VERNON—After taking a three-match winning streak into the second day of the Cornell College Matman Invitational, Central College wrestler Curtis Hobbs (freshman, Grinnell) at 141 lost in his only match of the day.

Hobbs, the lone Central College wrestler to advance to the invitational’s second day, lost via fall to Morningside’s Jared Pickett who would go on to take 5th place in the 141 weight class. The loss to Pickett ended Hobbs’ chances of placing for the Dutch.

The young Central squad scored 11-team points, placing them 13th in the 13-team invitational. Coe took the title with 164.5 points.

The Dutch finally make their home-season debut next Friday, taking on St. Olaf College (Minn.) in a 6 p.m. dual Friday at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. The Central Invitational will be staged the following day. The Oles, who haven’t wrestled since Dec. 6, have a 2-0 dual mark and were selected to compete in the NWCA Division III National Duals in Cedar Falls Jan. 12-13.Central Wrestlers Compete in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NEV.-Wrestling mats replaced Las Vegas hotel banquet tables as the Central College wrestling team competed at the Desert Duals Tuesday.

The young Dutch were 0-2-1 on the day. After a 34-18 loss to Apprentice (Va.), Central tied Grand Canyon (Ariz.) 30-30 in a forfeit-filled match, then was blanked by Elmhurst (Ill.) 57-0.

Staged on five mats in a ballroom of the storied Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, the duals featured 11 teams. Wartburg College served as the meet host. It's the third straight year that Central has participated.

Against Apprentice, the Dutch got falls from Kyle Ray (freshman, Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) at 157 pounds and from Nick Merical (freshman, Grinnell) at 285. It was Merical's first collegiate win. Curtis Hobbs (freshman, Grinnell) picked up a decision at 141 pounds and Anthony Rollins (freshman, Dyersville, Western Dubuque HS) recorded his first collegiate victory at 184.

Central scored its first tie of the season on the strength of five forfeit victories against Grand Canyon.

Ray remains Central's winningest wrestler at 6-5 in his rookie season. Hobbs is 5-6.

The Dutch (0-7-1) take a break for Christmas, before returning to campus to resume workouts Dec. 31 as they prepare for the Cornell Matman Invitational in Mount Vernon Jan. 4-5. The tourney begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4 and at 9 a.m. the following day. Central was 14th in last year's Cornell meet.

Central Iowa's Jones is Lone Victor for Dutch Wrestlers

SIMPSON - Facing stiff competition at the Simpson Invitational, 149-pounder Lance Jones (freshman, St. Charles, I-35 HS) was Central College wrestling team's only winner Saturday.

After dropping his first match, Jones responded by defeating Elliot Smith of New York University 7-5 before he feel in his next match.

"Lance was competitive in all his matches," said head coach Eric Van Kley. "He wrestled well in all his matches and was especially good in the top position."

Despite Jones's solid performance, Central only scored 0.5 points in the invitational. Wartburg took the title with 187.5 points.

Van Kley was not deterred by team standings.
"The team competed hard," he said. "We faced some of the better teams in the Iowa Conference, and we saw what we have to do to get better."

The Dutch take the mat again Tuesday, Dec. 4, in a dual against Augustana (Ill.) in Rock Island, Ill., at 7:30 p.m.

Central's Ray Pins Way to Augsburg Title
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.-Central College freshman Kyle Ray (freshman, Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) scored three straight falls en route to the Bronze title at 157 pounds at the Auggie-Brute Adidas Open wrestling tourney Saturday.

The field was divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze pools based on individual records and experience in the meet hosted by NCAA Division III power Augsburg College (Minn.). No team scores were kept.

Ray pinned Chris Herman of Jamestown (N.D.) in 1:09, Wesley Ronchi of Itasca CC (Minn.) in 1:57 and unattached wrestler Matt Mueller in 4:53. Unattached wrestler Trae Reed defaulted in the finals.

The Dutch also got a second-place finish from Curtis Hobbs (freshman, Grinnell) in the Bronze pool at 141 pounds. After winning a pair of decisions, Hobbs was edged in the
championship match 3-2 by Zach Mullins of Briar Cliff.

Josh Stutting (sophomore, Clintonville, Wis.) was seventh at 174 pounds, dropping two matches but getting a fall in 1:43 over Ryan Gregg of Wis.-Eau Claire.

SIOUX CITY-Central College freshmen Lance Jones (St. Charles, I-35 HS) and Kyle Ray (Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) each recorded falls but the Dutch wrestlers dropped a pair of meets Wednesday night.

Morningside blanked the Dutch in the opener 57-0 before York (Neb.) was a 36-24 winner as Central dropped to 0-3 in the young season.

Jones pinned York's John Carr in 3:51 at 157 pounds while Ray needed just 30 seconds to stop Clayton Davis at 165 pounds. Jones is now 2-1. Central's Brandon Rose (freshman, Lonedell, Mo., Sullivan HS) and Nick Johnson (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) received forfeit wins against York at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively.

"I was much more pleased with the way we came out in the second match," first-year coach Eric Van Kley said. "We came out a little more aggressive and it was nice to get a couple of falls. But it came down to 197 pounds and heavyweight, and we came up short. We gave up too many bonus points."

The Dutch have a big day Saturday, traveling to the Augsburg Invitational at Minneapolis, opening at 9 a.m.

"We're an extremely young team," Van Kley said. "We have to focus on improvement each time out. Tonight was disappointing but we've got to have short memories because in two days we'll hit the mats again.

"We'll get a lot of matches Saturday and that will help. Our guys just need more experience so it will be good to get them more mat time. We definitely hope to improve on some of the things we saw tonight."

Central College Wrestling Season Outlook

Having already built a wrestling program from scratch, new Central College coach Eric Van Kley is embarking on an equally ambitious project.Outlook

Unlike his previous job at Great Falls University (Mont.), at Central Van Kley is working with a program with a powerful tradition. The Dutch have posted seven top-10 NCAA Division III team finishes, including national runner-up in 1984-85. Central wrestlers have earned all-America distinction 42 times, capturing four individual national titles while bringing home four Iowa Conference team championships.

Yet preparing for the 2007-08 season at Central, where the Dutch have faltered in recent years, feels a bit like starting over for Van Kley. At Great Falls, just three years after the program's debut Van Kley had aggressively recruited a squad of 45 wrestlers that rocketed to first place in the NAIA West Region and placed sixth at the national tournament. At Central, Van Kley inherits the remnants of a squad that endured a 0-18 season in 2006-07 and there are no juniors or seniors going through fall workouts

"It feels exactly the same," Van Kley said. "We're saying much the same thing we said at Great Falls: It's not a bad thing to be starting a program. There's a lot of excitement and enthusiasm and there's a willingness to give new things a try. If you've got a lot of people who've been around, they're more likely to say 'We've tried that before.'

"At the same time, the challenge is you don't have that upperclass leadership to point the way. But I couldn't be more pleased with the attitude the guys have shown so far."

Just two letterwinners return from last year's team. But even though Van Kley didn't arrive on the scene until the start of summer, he quickly assembled a squad of 15 wrestlers, and the enthusiasm he's injected into the program is growing.

Much like a start-up program, there's precious little experience.
Returning letterwinners include sophomore Nick Johnson, who finished eighth in the Iowa Conference at 133 pounds and sophomore Kevin Yeoman, who is moving up to 165 pounds after a season at 157.
Competing in the nationally prominent Iowa Conference, Van Kley knows the kind of overnight success his program enjoyed at Great Falls is unlikely at Central.
"Obviously the Iowa Conference is far and away the toughest conference in the country," he said. "Our youth will make it difficult for us. But our goal this year is to just improve every week. The Iowa Conference is not getting any weaker, but we love it. We know that if we can compete in the Iowa Conference, we can compete anywhere in the country.

"We haven't set any kind of a timeline. It may be a long process. But at the same time we've got a staff and a team that are excited about the challenge."

125-133
Numbers are scarce in the lower weights. Freshman Brandon Rose of Lonedell, Mo. will likely go at 125 pounds and there's no wrestler listed at 133.
"Brandon's very tall with an unorthodox style," Van Kley said. "His strongest position is on top as he showed by getting a lot of pins in high school."

141
Johnson moves up a weight after placing eighth at the Iowa Conference meet last year and posting a 6-25 mark. He'll be joined by freshman Curtis Hobbs of Grinnell.
"They have pretty similar styles," Van Kley said. "They're both very aggressive. They both push the pace of the match. It's just a matter of getting them more experience."

149
Van Kley envisions good things for freshman Lance Jones of St. Charles at 149 pounds.
"He was very successful in high school and is going to develop into a solid college wrestler," Van Kley said. "He's very strong in all three positions. I think he has a bright future."

157
Sophomore Jeremiah Teeple joined the squad at the start of the second semester in January last year. He was 0-4 in limited action but is better prepared this year.
"Jeremiah's an older student so more than anything, he gives us some maturity," he said. "We're short of experience, so that's helpful. I like his attitude and his work ethic. We really enjoy having him around."
He'll be pushed for the 157-pound position by freshman Kyle Ray of Greenfield. He was a state placewinner for Nodaway Valley High School.
"Kyle's real strong and very aggressive," Van Kley said. "He's strong from the neutral position."

165
Yeoman is back and expecting improvement after enduring a 0-13 freshman campaign at 157.
"Kevin's been extremely focused all fall," Van Kley said. "He struggled a little over his weight last year at 157. I've been very pleased with his work ethic. He's established himself as a leader."

174-184
Sophomore Josh Stutting starts the year as the only candidate for 174 pounds, although the Dutch may pick up some help there from the football squad. That would allow Stutting to jump to 184 where he would go up against freshman Anthony Rollins of Dyersville.
"It's going to be real competitive," Van Kley said. "They have different styles but they both work hard and had a pretty good fall."

197
Freshman Chris Keeran of Redfield will get a quick orientation into college wrestling as Central's lone 197-pounder in the early going.
"Chris started (wrestling) late in high school, but what he lacks in experience, he makes up with effort," Van Kley said.

285
Sophomore transfer Jim Siddal and freshman Nick Merical of Grinnell will take over at 285 pounds.

"They'll both get time," Van Kley said.

While that's an admittedly thin lineup, Van Kley is hopeful that the Dutch will get a boost with 4-5 additional wrestlers once the football season is completed. Among the possibilities are sophomore David Zachary, who would probably compete at 174 pounds, and junior Jeremy Swafford, a likely fit at 184 pounds.

"It will be a big shot in the arm to have them join us," Van Kley said. "They'll be able to bring the work ethic, experience and success they've had in football to the team."

The Dutch open the 2007-08 campaign with a dual at Division II Truman State (Mo.) Nov. 9. Van Kley's home debut isn't until a Jan. 11 dual with St. Olaf (Minn.). The Central Invitational follows on Jan. 12.

Then Central enters the Iowa Conference slugfest, a trek that will assuredly leave scars. NCAA Division III title contender Wartburg will again be a heavy favorite, but eight league schools were nationally ranked most of the past season and likely will be again.

Van Kley is confident that Central's name will be prominent in those rankings again someday soon. Even though the Dutch have endured some disappointments in recent years, knowing that the program has a history of winning at the national level is an advantage.

"That really helps," Van Kley said. "We've got a lot of great alumni coaches out there and when they talk about Central, they know we've had success and know it can be done here. I think our alumni are excited about getting behind the program and we're getting a good reaction from coaches across the state. We just need to remind people that we've had a lot of all-Americans and some national champs here."

The journey to the top begins with the group presently toiling in the Dutch practice room. Van Kley is hitting the recruiting trail at a furious pace, but not with the notion that this year's wrestlers will be cast aside when help arrives.

"I'm very excited with how recruiting is going for next year," said Van Kley, whose track record of producing banner recruiting classes gives cause to trust his assessment. "But we definitely have a good core group of guys to start with here. They have the talent and the work ethic to start the kind of program we want. We just have to continue to build on that base as we bring in more guys."

Van Kley savors the challenge.

"We're not going to get the ship across the lake the first day, but we're headed in the right direction," he said. "I really like the attitude and effort I've seen in the room so far."

]Central Hires New Assistants
PELLA-Five assistant coaches have joined the Central College staff.

Jason Zastrow is a new assistant wrestling coach, Colin Kuchy and Eric Bentzinger are on the men's soccer staff and Brandon Townsend and Shea Stamp are new baseball assistants.

Kuchy, Bentzinger on men's soccer staff--Kuchy most recently served as head coach for Mount Zion (Ill.) High School for a year and the Mid-State Soccer Club in Decatur, Ill. after earlier stints as a coach for clubs in St. Louis, Mo. He also spent a year as the junior varsity coach at St. Ambrose University. For 15 months Kuchy was event manager for Street Soccer Cup USA in St. Louis.

A four-year starter for St. Ambrose, Kuchy was the team co-captain his senior year.
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Kuchy attended high school in Nashville, Tenn., where he played in three state tournaments and also gained extensive club experience.
He earned a bachelor's degree at St. Ambrose in 2003 and a master's degree in business management at Webster (Mo.) University.

"Colin comes to us from a successful soccer club program," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "He's also been a high school coach and is ready to make the step to the college level. He'll not only help with our varsity program but in leading our junior varsity team. Brandon is very reliable and will do a tremendous job."

Bentzinger will assist Laidlaw with the Dutch defense. He was the captain of Central's 2006 team and a four-year letterwinner. Bentzinger overcame two serious knee injuries to become a first-team all-Iowa Conference selection as a defender in 2006 and also a second-team all-region pick by D3Kicks.com. He also serves as a graduate intern in the Central sports information office.

"Eric was a great kid when he came to Central, but his Central experience really helped him grow and mature even more," Laidlaw said. "It's just tremendous to see him become successful. He's got a very bright future ahead."

Zastrow takes wrestling post--Zastrow was an NCAA Division III qualifier at 174 pounds this past winter for Wartburg College where he compiled a 53-27 career mark and placed third at the Iowa Conference tournament. A Blaine, Minn. native, Zastrow has served as a camp instructor.

"The biggest thing Jason brings is a successful wrestling background," new head coach Eric Van Kley said. "He's got a terrific work ethic. His former coaches all speak of his determination and strong character. He's doing great things already."

Townsend, Stamp on baseball staff--Townsend will be the Central baseball squad pitching coach. He spent the past year as head pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and junior varsity coach at North Central College (Ill.) and previously served as pitching coach and assistant recruiting coordinator at North Park College (Ill.). He is a 2005 graduate of North Central where he was a two-year team captain. He also has experience as a youth league coach and as a private pitching instructor.

"Brandon is very eager to get out and recruit good student-athletes," baseball coach Adam Stevens said. "He's already had some coaching experience and is very knowledgeable about pitching. He'll be a big help to our pitching staff."

Stamp, a 2006 Central graduate, was a four-year letterwinner and two-time first-team all-Iowa Conference selection for the Dutch as an outfielder. Stamp helped lead Central to a share of the 2006 league title. He ranks third on Central's career hits list (157) and set school records for most season walks (26, 2006), career walks (74), career times hit by pitch (50) and hits in a doubleheader (7, April 1, 2006). He had a career batting mark of .337 with 19 homers and 100 runs batted in.

Stamp is in his second year as an admission counselor at Central.

"Shea is an outstanding addition," Stevens said. "He played for us so he knows how we do things and he's the son of a coach, so he's been around the game his whole life. The guys on the team respect him and he'll do a great job."

Central Grad Christenson Wins National Wrestling Honor
PELLA- Jason Christenson of Altoona, a 1991 Central College graduate, has been named
Developmental Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the U.S.

Christenson, head coach at Southeast Polk High School for the past six years after four years as head coach at Oskaloosa High School, serves as coach for Iowa's junior-level national teams. Iowa's junior director since 2002, Christenson completed his fifth season as Iowa's team leader for the junior national tournament. He was the head coach or team leader for Iowa's junior duals national team 10 of the past 13 years.

Christenson piloted Iowa to the team Greco-Roman title at the 2006 ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Tournament and the freestyle crown at the 2005 Junior National Duals Tournament.

Director and coach for the Ram Wrestling Club at Southeast Polk, Christenson has coached 11 USA Wrestling all-America honorees at Oskaloosa and Southeast Polk high schools. He also coached an Iowa international exchange team in New Zealand.

Christenson, a past president of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, Christenson has received coach of the year honors for the Iowa Wrestling Federation and Iowa high schools

He's only the second Iowan to receive the award, first presented in 1989. Mike Rial was cited in 1998.
At Central, Christenson was an NCAA Division III championship tourney qualifier in 1991 as the Dutch finished fourth in the nation. He compiled a 50-20-4 career record, with a third-place finishes at the Iowa Conference tournament at 190 pounds (1990) and 177 pounds (1991).

Eric Van Kley is in his first year as Central's wrestling coach, but is well-aware of Christenson's efforts.
"I've gotten to know Jason fairly well," Van Kley said. "It's a very prestigious award and he's extremely deserving. If you look at the past recipients, it includes some of the best coaches in the country. That speaks volumes to Jason's contributions to wrestling in Iowa and beyond. It's great having a Central graduate win this award."

Great Falls Coach Van Kley to Lead Central Wrestling Program
PELLA-Eric Van Kley, who started the wrestling program at the University of Great Falls (Mont.) in 2004 and turned it into an NAIA title contender, has been named the head wrestling coach at Central College.

Van Kley, who also became the Great Falls athletics director in 2006, replaces Eric Reed, who resigned after three seasons at Central.

"The potential of the wrestling program at Central is what attracted me," Van Kley said. "As I looked at the landscape, the outstanding quality of the athletic department and Central as a whole is extremely impressive. There are several strong athletic programs and a very proud tradition with Dutch athletics. Being able to join that is something that excites me."

A Rock Valley, Iowa native, Van Kley is an honors graduate of Minnesota State-Mankato where he was a three-time letterwinner for the NCAA Division II program. He served as captain for the 2000 team which placed sixth at the national meet and was a two-time Scholastic All-America honoree, while receiving the team's Maverick Achievement Award. Van Kley is completing a master's degree from Duquesne University (Pa.).

After three seasons as assistant wrestling coach at The Dalles High School in Oregon, he spent a year as assistant coach for Division I Millersville University (Pa.) while also serving as Leadership Program Coordinator for the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He worked with a Millersville squad that won the Eastern Regional dual meet title and placed second at the Virginia Duals.

At Great Falls Van Kley recruited a team with 45 athletes this past season. He compiled a 28-13 dual meet record over three seasons. His wrestlers earned NAIA all-America distinction 13 times with three top-10 national team finishes. In 2006-07 the Argos won the West Region championship and finished sixth at the NAIA national tournament. Van Kley was named the NAIA West Region coach of the year. His 2005-06 team received NAIA Top 10 academic distinction.

"Eric has all the qualities we were looking for in a leader for our wrestling program," athletics director Al Dorenkamp said. "He's done a great job of starting a program from scratch, he's proven he's a great recruiter and he fits in with the mission and values of Central College."

Great Falls met Central in the Desert Duals at Las Vegas, Nev. Dec. 19 and defeated the
Dutch 46-3. The squad Van Kley inherits at Central posted a 0-18 dual record and had nine underclassmen on the roster-all freshmen. But the Dutch are not strangers to wrestling success, with 10 top-20 NCAA Division III team finishes, including a second-place showing in 1983-84, four NCAA individual titles and four Iowa Conference team championships. Central wrestlers have received all-America honors 42 times.

Since 2005 Van Kley was also the Team Montana Junior and Cadet National Team Director, supervising a residential training camp with more than 100 wrestlers and a staff of 25 coaches and counselors. He was also elected as a board member for Montana USA Wrestling.

Van Kley said it's difficult to leave Great Falls.
"Any time you have such a great group of guys and a quality staff, it's tough to leave," he said. "But the kids understood. It hurts, however they know the decision was for the right reasons and that the University of Great Falls program has a terrific future ahead."

As the Great Falls athletics director he oversaw an 11-sport program and was named the university's staff employee of the year in 2006.

"Obviously in serving as athletics director as well, he knows about marketing and promotion," Dorenkamp said. "We wanted someone with strong people skills who could recruit and promote the program and Eric fits that description. We're really excited about having Eric at Central."

Van Kley is anxious to get started.
"The first thing we need to do is work on recruiting and building up the numbers," Van Kley said. "We want to attract quality student-athletes who will be a good fit at Central College. More than anything, that just takes long hours and hard work."

Van Kley and his wife Sarah, also an Iowa native, are the parents of a son, Jackson, born last summer. He will assume his duties at Central June 1.

Central's Ohnemus Fifth at League Tourney
DUBUQUE-Andy Ohnemus (senior, Indianola, Southeast Warren HS) was the Central College wrestling team's top placewinner at the Iowa Conference Tournament Thursday. After an initial first-round loss, Ohnemus fought his way into the fifth-place match and defeated third-seeded Luke Satern of Buena Vista 7-5, finishing the day 2-2.

Ryan DeVriendt (senior, Sherrard, Ill.) wrapped up an injury-plagued season with a sixth-place finish, posting a 1-3 record on the day and closing with a 4-12 loss against Coe's Tyler Burkle in the fifth-place match. He became a four-time league placewinner, previously finishing eighth in 2004, fifth in 2005 and eighth in 2006.

Central Falls in Dual Season Finale

INDIANOLA—Central College wrapped up its dual-meet wrestling season Wednesday, tumbling at Simpson College 36-15.

In addition to picking up a couple of forfeit victories, the Dutch got a win at 197 pounds from Max Davis (freshman, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS). He scored a 5-2 triumph for his third victory in his last five matches.

Central (0-18) continues fighting off injuries and was open at three weights. But the Dutch now have an eight-day layoff before the Iowa Conference tournament at the University of Dubuque next Thursday, Feb. 15 and coach Eric Reed remains hopeful of being near full strength for that. Simpson finished its dual season at 5-11-1.

DeVriendt Wins Two but Fanked Foes Overpower Central College Wrestlers
PELLA-Four nationally ranked opponents were too much for the young Central College wrestling team at the Iowa Conference Duals Saturday.

        Competing at Central's H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse, the Dutch (0-17) were overwhelmed by 24th-ranked Buena Vista 41-12, 17th-ranked Cornell 56-0, fifth-rated Luther 45-9 and 16th-ranked Loras 45-9.

Central is inching closer to a full lineup but still was open at two weights. Ryan DeVriendt (senior, Sherrard, Ill.) was back for the Dutch at 157 pounds after being sidelined by injury for the second time and scored wins in his final two matches for a 2-2 mark, edging Luther's Danny Fornoff 3-2 and Mark Kapraun of Loras 3-1. Freshman Jess Welu (Dubuque, Hempstead HS) notched a fall at 184 pounds over Luther's Thomas Ingram in 4:27.

"With four opponents in the top 20, the competition level was elevated considerably today compared to what we've been seeing," coach Eric Reed said. "We faced several ranked wrestlers, but the guys fought harder today than they have all year. Some of the things we've been working on and that were working, we got away from, but they made up for it by fighting and working hard."

Even with the defeats, the Dutch emerged with a confidence boost, Reed said.

"This is the competition we'll see at the Iowa Conference tournament," he said. "But the guys know now that they can compete with them. Hopefully they see that when they go out and fight, they give themselves a chance to be in it."

Central makes its first appearance in the Briar Cliff Invitational at Sioux City next Saturday, where Reed anticipates facing several NAIA opponents. The Dutch then wrap up the dual meet schedule with a Feb. 7 match at Simpson.

Central Wrestlers Still Shorthanded
PELLA-Injuries continued to limit opportunities for success for the Central College wrestling team at Saturday's Central Duals.

The Dutch (0-12) had just five healthy wrestlers take the mat and they suffered setbacks to Augustana (Ill.) 41-9, William Penn 54-0 and Dubuque 57-0.

Nick Johnson (freshman, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) pulled out a 7-6 victory against Augustana and Mark Trullinger (senior, Mount Ayr) returned to the lineup at 285 pounds and accepted a forfeit win.

"Psychologically, going in knowing we're going to forfeit five matches makes it tough," coach Eric Reed said. "But I actually felt OK about the way we wrestled. Nick Johnson was 1-2 but wasn't that far from being 3-0, he just did one or two dumb things. Tyrone Callender (freshman, Clarksville, Tenn., Kenwood HS) was kind of the same way."

Jeremiah Teeple (sophomore, Lincoln, Neb.) made his debut at 149 pounds. Teeple enrolled at Central for spring semester after being out of college for a few years. He was pinned in his only match but showed some promise, Reed said.

"He wrestled well in the first period but then you could just see him getting tired," Reed said. "He hasn't been on the mat in five years and had only been at practice for four days, but he wanted to be out there, which is a good sign."

It was the first action this year for Trullinger, who was at Central's study center in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico during fall semester.

The Dutch face a demanding week with matches against four nationally ranked Iowa Conference foes. Wednesday they travel to Waverly to tackle No. 2-ranked Wartburg College in a 7 p.m. dual meet at Waverly-Shell Rock High School. Next Saturday Central is home for the third straight weekend, playing host to the Iowa Conference Duals. The Dutch meet fourth-ranked Luther, 16th-rated Loras and 20th-rated Buena Vista.

Reed hopes to regain the services of Ryan DeVriendt (senior, Sherrard, Ill.) at 149 pounds, Griffin Holden (freshman, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) at 165 and possibly Jess Welu (freshman, Dubuque, Hempstead HS) next week.

Central's DeVriendt Wins Three Matches in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, NEV.-Central College 157-pounder Ryan DeVriendt (senior, Sherrard, Ill.) won three matches but the young Dutch wrestling squad was outscored by four foes at the Desert Duals Tuesday.

With wrestling mats covering a ballroom floor in the stately Flamingo Hotel, Central was overwhelmed by Great Falls (Mont.) 46-3, Menlo (Calif.) 52-0, Apprentice (Va.) 48-6 and Ohio Northern 38-12, leaving the Dutch 0-9 for the season. Central was without its complete lineup and had to forfeit at 141 and 149 pounds. An injury to Nathan Stueve (senior, Martensdale, Martensdale-St. Marys HS) at 285 pounds forced Central to forfeit that weight as well in the last two matches.

DeVriendt, Central's lone wrestler at the meet with varsity experience, got a late start to the season because of injury, but improved to 4-2 with three wins Tuesday. He opened with an 11-7 decision over Jeremy Montang of Great Falls before suffering a 14-2 setback to Menlo (Calif.) College's Robert Davis. DeVriendt rebounded with a pin of David Thornton of Apprentice (Va.) in 3:30 and won by injury default in 5:23 over A.J. Coleman of Ohio Northern.

The Dutch also got a fall by Jess Welu (freshman, Dubuque, Hempstead HS) at 184 pounds over Ohio Northern's Stu Fischer in 2:14.

After returning home the Dutch break for the Christmas holiday before starting preparation for the Cornell Matman Invitational Jan. 5-6 in Mount Vernon. Central was 14th in a 17-team field there last year.

Dutch wrestlers 13th at Simpson Invitational

INDIANOLANathan Stueve (senior, Martensdale, Martensdale-St. Mary's HS) won three matches at 285 pounds at the highly competitive Simpson Invitational Saturday.

The Dutch wrestlers finished 13th of 16 teams with 12.5 points. Wartburg took the team trophy with 152 points.

Nathan (Stueve) wrestled well today, said coach Eric Reed. He made smart decisions and really put it together. It was a really tough tournament. The defending NAIA and NCAA Div. III team champions (Dana (Neb.) and Warburg) both brought their full squads.

Stueve posted a 3-2 mark while Central also got victories from Andy Ohnemus (senior, Indianola, Southeast Warren HS) at 141 pounds, Adam Foreman (sophomore, Fairfield) at 174 pounds, and Max Davis (freshman, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) at 197 pounds.

Adam (Foreman) wrestled great, said Reed. He was much more aggressive and physical today than his last few matches. Max (Davis) lost a good match in overtime and really had his guy worn out.

Central travels to Rock Island, Ill. Thursday to face Augustana (Ill.) and North Central (Ill.) at 6 p.m. North Central (Ill.) is currently ranked eighth in the NWCA poll.

Coe Overpowers Central Wrestlers
PELLA-There was a glaring difference in experience levels and, ultimately, on the scoreboard as No. 12-ranked Coe College coasted to a 55-0 shutout of the Central College wrestling team Wednesday.

The veteran Kohawks recorded seven falls in improving to 6-0 on the year while Central dropped to 0-3 while fielding a lineup that included seven freshmen and none of last year's regulars.

"Coe just comes out like gangbusters at the start of the season," coach Eric Reed said. "They're an experienced, physical team and we're not."

Reed is more concerned about effort level rather than victories in the early going.

"I thought Jess Welu (freshman, Dubuque, Hempstead) took it to his opponent at times," Reed said. "He made some mistakes but he kept fighting back. That's what we're looking for out of the entire team right now. We're just looking for people to go out and fight."

Next week the Dutch should get a much-needed leadership boost with the return of senior Ryan DeVriendt (Sherrard, Ill.), a three-year letterwinner. He's been sidelined by injury but was cleared to practice earlier this week and should make his debut Dec. 7 in a triangular with Augustana (Ill.) and North Central (Ill.) at Rock Island, Ill.

But first Central travels to Indianola for the Simpson Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.

Central Wrestlers Show Progress at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.- Jess Welu (freshman, Dubuque, Hempstead) placed third in his pool at 184 pounds as the young Central College wrestling team made some progress according to coach Eric Reed at the Auggie-Brute-adidas Open Saturday.

The non-scored tourney was hosted by top-ranked Augsburg College (Minn.).

Welu posted a 2-1 mark while Central also got victories from Tyrone Callender (freshman, Clarksville, Tenn., Kenwood HS) at 125 pounds, Andy Ohnemus (senior, Indianola, Southeast Warren HS) at 141 pounds, Griffin Holden (freshman, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) at 165 pounds, Adam Foreman (sophomore, Fairfield) at 174 pounds, Josh Stutting (freshman, Clintonville, Wis.) at 174 and Max Davis (freshman, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) at 197.

"We looked a lot better than we did Wednesday," Reed said, referring to season-opening losses to Truman State (Mo.) and Morningside. "But we still made some mistakes."

Reed cited Nick Wordes (freshman, Buckingham, North Tama HS) at 149 pounds, among others.

"Even though he was 0-2, he looked good," Reed said. "Jess Welu could have easily been in the finals and he pinned his guy in the first round. Adam Foreman looked a lot better and so did Josh Stutting. Up and down the line we saw some improvement. We felt pretty good about it."

The Dutch have an 11-day layoff before playing host to their first Iowa Conference dual meet of the season, taking on Coe College Wednesday, Nov. 29 in a 7 p.m. match at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Kohawks are 12th in the NWCA Division III preseason rankings.

Rocky Debut for Central Wrestlers

PELLA-Relying on a lineup with only one returnee from last year's squad, the young Central College wrestling team absorbed some hard lessons in its season opener Wednesday, falling to Morningside 49-0 and Truman State (Mo.) 38-9.

The lone winners for the Dutch were Jess Welu (freshman, Dubuque, Hempstead HS), the recipient of a forfeit at 184 pounds and Max Davis (freshman, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS), who used a takedown in the final 20 seconds for a 5-4 decision at 197 pounds against Truman State.

Seven Central freshmen made their debut and two of the upperclassmen hadn't competed in two years. The Dutch hope to regain the services of senior 149-pounder Ryan De Vriendt (Sherrard, Ill.) next month following his recovery from injury.

"We've got so many freshmen who haven't had any upperclassmen to work out with and that showed," coach Eric Reed said. "It's a fairly raw group. But I thought for the most part they fought better in the second match than in the first one. We saw a few good things out of most of them. If we were still wrestling this way in two months, we'd have issues, but we'll get better. We've just got to keep progressing every week and keep working on the little things."

The Dutch pick up some more experience Saturday at the non-scored Augsburg (Minn.) Open. The Auggies are ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III preseason poll. Wrestlers are split into pools, with most of the younger wrestlers in the same bracket.

"It's a good starting tournament for us," Reed said. "It will be good for our guys to get some matches against some other freshmen."

Central College Wrestling Season Outlook

An infusion of new talent has raised the enthusiasm level in the Central College wrestling room.

There are many skills the newcomers will need to develop but there's also a necessary skill coach Eric Reed must master: patience.

"We're still a couple of years away from being really competitive," Reed said. "But if we bring in another recruiting class like this one, or even better, we can be pretty tough."

Yet that doesn't mean the Dutch won't see progress in 2006-07. Last year's club struggled through a 2-15 campaign, finishing ninth in the Iowa Conference tournament. Central was forced to forfeit the first three weight classes because injuries exposed a lack of depth. With 15 wrestlers on the roster, depth remains a concern, but the Dutch appear to have legitimate options at every weight.

New faces are everywhere Just three letterwinners return, led by senior Ryan DeVriendt, who was eighth in the league at 149 pounds, but he's sidelined by a hand injury until December. And senior 285-pounder Mark Trullinger is spending the fall semester at Central's international study center in Mexico.

125

The Dutch are going from having a void at 125 to the weight becoming a team strength, said Reed. Tyrone Callender is a highly regarded freshman from Clarksville, Tenn.

"I think Tyrone will be pretty tough," Reed said. "He was a state qualifier in high school and he's really been working hard. He's a pretty aggressive kid and once he adjusts to the college style of wrestling, I think he'll do well."

133

Nick Johnson, a freshman from San Antonio, Texas, probably could go at 125 but is in a better position to make the move to 133 than Callender.

"Nick grew a little bit over the summer and I think 125 would be a tough (weight) cut for him now," Reed said. "He's a strong kid who is pretty physical and aggressive. He's also very eager to learn and is already asking a lot of questions of the coaches about ways to get better."

141

Senior Andy Ohnemus returns to the squad after a year's absence and provides a veteran presence. He was 3-11 in 2004-05 at 133 pounds.

"Andy's gotten bigger," Reed said. "He's a lot different wrestler than he was two years ago. He's more focused and working harder. He could be one of our top guys by the end of the year."

149

DeVriendt is moving up to 157 pounds, leaving 149 to freshman Nick Wordes, a North Tama High School grad. Reed said Wordes is a raw talent.

"He just started wrestling a couple years ago," Reed said. "But he's been working hard.

He'll take some lumps but will learn a lot and is very eager to learn. His attitude has been a pleasant surprise."

157

DeVriendt, a team co-captain as a junior, is spending 6-8 weeks on the sidelines because of injury. After a fast start last year, he posted a 14-20 record.

"I think 157 might be a better weight for him," Reed said. "Dropping to 149 has taken its toll on him. By staying at 157, I'm hoping he can go harder longer and be strong at the end of the season."

165

The Dutch actually have two options at 165, but Reed expects freshman Griffin Holden to get the nod over freshman Kevin Yeoman.

Holden, a Pleasant Valley High School grad, was a two-time state tourney qualifier.

"He's a good, solid kid," Reed said. "He maybe could go at 157 pounds, but he'll be competitive at 165. He just needs to get stronger."

174

Sophomore Adam Foreman is back after a rookie year of hard lessons on the mat en route to a 6-17 record. Reed is anticipating big improvement, but isn't sure if Foreman will remain at 174 pounds or bump up to 184.

"He has a good attitude and is a hard worker," Reed said. "Things started clicking for him by the end of last year and he's gotten a lot stronger."

Reed also likes freshman Josh Stutting of Clintonville, Wis. Stutting could wind up at 184 as well.

"Josh has gotten a lot better in the last month," Reed said. "He's been working hard."

Junior Jim Maher will compete at 174 pounds as well.

184

Foreman or Stutting could be the 184-pounder but freshman Jess Welu of Dubuque is getting a look as well. He wrestled at 215 pounds in high school to help fill a void but is better suited for a lower weight.

"He's a good, solid, physical kid," Reed said. "He's surprised us quite a bit.

"All three of those guys are fairly close and I would feel comfortable putting any of them out there. And they'll give each other good workout partners."

197

Freshman Max Davis, a Des Moines Roosevelt grad, will eventually be joined at 197 pounds by freshman Trevor Hixon of Iowa City, a member of the football team.

"Max (Davis) had a pretty successful senior year," Reed said. "He's got some things to work on but he's got a good attitude. The thing I like is that he doesn't care who he's going against, he'll go out and fight."

Hixon is a bit of an unknown, Reed said.

"I've only seen him in the weight room and know that he's very strong," he said. "But I've talked to the football coaches and they've been very impressed with him. He won't be a pushover."

285

With Trullinger off campus until late December, the job falls to senior Nathan Stueve, who hasn't competed in recent years because of health problems.

"He's a big, strong kid but I haven't seen him on the mat yet," Reed said.

Trullinger was 5-15 last year and finished eighth in the Iowa Conference. But Reed has been impressed with Trullinger's persistence the past three seasons.

"Every year he's done better than the previous year," Reed said.
The schedule

The non-conference schedule is again highlighted by the Desert Duals Dec. 19 in Las Vegas, Nev. The Dutch will also play host to the Cetnral Invitational Jan. 13, followed by the Central Duals Jan. 20.

The Iowa Conference remains the nation's dominant NCAA Division III league, making a quick climb in the standings a formidable assignment.

"As long as we stay healthy, we'll be all right, but it's going to be tough to move up this year," Reed said. "If we could get about three years of recruiting classes like this one, we'd be fine."

Central Stages Wrestling Camps
PELLA-Central College is staging a pair of summer wrestling camps for students in grades K-12.
An overnight technique camp is slated for July 6-9 with a less extensive commuter camp offered July 31-Aug. 2. Each camp will be led by the Central wrestling coaching staff, headed by coach Eric Reed and joined by strength and conditioning coach Jake Anderson.

The overnight camp begins each day with an optional early-morning run followed by three two-hour technique sessions that will also include live wrestling. Campers will be provided air-conditioned lodging and meals on campus. Cost is $225 or $175 for commuters.

The commuter camp features a daily one-hour session from 5-6 p.m. for elementary school wrestlers for $35. Junior high and high school wrestlers will have work out from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $65.

More information and a downloadable camp brochure are available on the Central athletics Web site at <http://www.central.edu/athletics>www.central.edu/athletics. For questions, contact Reed at (641) 628-5422 or at reede@central.edu.

Central Wrestlers Falter Against Ranked League Foes
WAVERLY-Wrestling shorthanded against three nationally ranked foes proved a considerable obstacle for Central College at the Iowa Conference Duals Saturday.

No. 1-rated Wartburg blasted Central 54-0 and improved to 24-0 on the year. No. 18 Cornell (15-8) stopped the Dutch 43-6 and 25th-rated Dubuque (13-10) was a 44-4 victor.

Against Cornell, Central (2-14) got a pair of wins. Ross Patton (senior, Burlington) decisioned Drew Vickers 6-0 at 165 pounds and at 285 Mark Trullinger (junior, Mt. Ayr) defeated Chris Gustafson 6-4.

Josh Porter (senior, Fort Dodge) was Central's lone winner against Dubuque, routing R.J. Oliver 14-3 at 197 pounds. Porter is 18-9 for the year.

Central was without Robert Baxter (sophomore, Shenandoah) at 157 pounds and was open at four weights against Cornell. But the Dutch were represented at 125 pounds in the other two matches for the first time since before Christmas as freshman Tyler Cordts (Overbrook, Kan., Santa Fe Trail HS) made his varsity debut. Coach Eric Reed said Cordts needed to improve his size and strength before seeing action and he has been diligent in his strength workouts throughout the year. Cordts was pinned by Wartburg's Ben McCorriston in 3:34, then was decisioned by Dubuque's Scott Hutton 13-5.

The regular season winds down for the Dutch, who are at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational next Friday and Saturday. A home dual with No. 19 Simpson College Feb. 8 completes the dual schedule. Central then prepares to play host to the Iowa Conference Tournament Feb. 16 at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse and P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

Porter Wins Central Title

PELLA-Josh Porter (senior, Fort Dodge) rolled to the 197-pound title at the Central Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ross Patton (senior, Burlington) took second for the Dutch at 165 pounds in the non-scored meet which attracted 140 wrestlers from 12 schools.

It was the season's first title for Porter, who was second at the Simpson Invitational Dec. 3. Porter, 17-6, faced three Northwestern College wrestlers. He
edged Tim Naiman in the quarterfinals 4-3, then decision Corey Stromley 10-2 and second-seeded Andrew Lundgren 11-2.

"The kid Josh wrestled in the finals is pretty tough," coach Eric Reed said. "It was a good win for him. That's probably the best we've seen from him this year."

Patton (6-4) opened with a pin of J.P. Williams of Loras in 1:17 and decsioned Robert Larson of Dubuque 1-0 but dropped the final to top-seeded Coe
Williams of Dubuque 7-1.

"Ross hasn't been down to 165 much yet this year," Reed said. "But he's starting to get used to being at that weight."

Ryan DeVriendt (junior, Sherrard, Ill.) was 1-2 at 149 pounds, while Robert Baxter (sophomore, Shenandoah) was 2-2 at 157, recording two falls and
Josh Houston (senior, Nevada) was 1-2 at 174.

"As a group, that's the best we've looked so far this year," Reed said. "We're coming off two-a-days (practices) and even for last week's tournament,
we trained hard through the competition. But yesterday we lightened up a little bit and I think the break helped. Hopefully it set us up for where we want to be a
month from now."

Central travels to Dubuque Wednesday for a dual with eighth-ranked Loras College at 7 p.m.

"Loras is pretty solid all the way through the lineup," Reed said. "But we have a few weights where we can go with them."

Central wrestlers tumble at Coe

Central Wrestlers Fall at Morningside

PELLA-The Central College wrestling squad finished strong but the outcome was not in doubt as the Dutch tumbled at Morningside Tuesday 34-6.

Giving up a fall and two forfeits at the first three weights, Central was quickly down 18-0 as Morningside went on to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Central College wrestling season outlook

The climb begins this year for coach Eric Reed and the Central College wrestling program.
Reed, entering his second season, inherited a thin roster last year that was able to generate some noise, including an upset victory over a nationally ranked opponent (31-10 over Buena Vista Dec. 10), but closed with a 4-14 record and a ninth-place Iowa Conference finish.

Reed is fiercely determined to return the Dutch program to national contender status. That's a multi-year endeavor, but the energetic head coach views his first recruiting class as a solid foundation for such a project.

Depth is still an issue. Only three letterwinners are back and with the anticipated departure of junior Nate Forsythe at Christmas break for a semester of study through Central's international program in Europe, the Dutch will be forced to go open at 141 pounds down the stretch.

But Reed expects four freshmen to earn starting berths following a roster makeover that not only boosted the team's talent level, but transformed the squad's intensity and personality.

"The atmosphere in the practice room is totally different this year," Reed said shortly after workouts began. "We're already doing stuff that we couldn't have even thought about doing at this time last year.
