Central Michigan Place Sixth at Midlands
- EVANSTON, Ill. - Mike Miller's runner-up finish at 174 pounds helped lead Central Michigan to a sixth-place finish at the Midlands Championships Tuesday night.
- Miller won his first five matches at the tournament, including a 6-3 decision over No. 1 seed Jay Borschel (Iowa) in the semifinals, before meeting American's Mike Cannon in the finals. Cannon scored a takedown in the first period of the championship bout, but Miller evened the score with a pair of escapes. Cannon began the third period in the bottom position and took a 3-2 lead with an escape 20 seconds into the period. Following a scramble in the match's closing seconds, Miller was initially credited with a takedown at the final horn. A brief discussion among the officials ensued, and the takedown was eventually waved off.
- Miller is CMU's highest individual place finisher at Midlands since Wynn Michalak won the 197-pound title in 2005.
- Iowa, on the strength of three individual champions and two runners-up, won the team title with 156.5 points. The Hawkeyes edged runner-up Iowa State, which had five individuals finisher runner-up and tallied 153.5 team points.

Brown was then defeated in the first tiebreaker, 6-5, by American's Kyle Borshoff in his first wrestleback match before topping David Cheza (Michigan State), 9-3, in the fifth-place bout.
- Also competing in the semifinals Tuesday was Tony D'Alie, who was competing unattached. He was defeated by Iowa's Alex Tsirtsis, 8-1, in the 141-pound semis, then split a pair of wrestleback matches to finish fourth. D'Alie, who did not count in CMU's team score, was not seeded in the 141-pound bracket.
- Conor Beebe (eighth, 133 pounds) and Vince DiDona (eighth, 184 pounds) also earned spots on the medal stand for CMU.

Central Michigan Finish 3-1 at Northeast Duals
- TROY, N.Y. - The No. 17-ranked Central Michigan wrestling team won three of its four matches at the Journeyman/Brute Northeast Duals on Saturday.
- The one loss, however, may have been the Chippewas' most impressive effort of the day.
- CMU posted wins of 25-6 over Bucknell, 24-12 over American and 30-10 over Drexel. The Chippewas' lone loss was a 27-6 decision to No. 1 Iowa, a dual in which five of the Hawkeyes' eight victories were by two points or less.
- "I thought we competed really hard, but at crunch time we didn't seal deal," said CMU head coach Tom Borrelli. "Wewere up at 125 before the pin, we were right in the match at 133, at 141 we lost on a riding time point, at 165 welost in overtime and we had a last-second loss at 174. We were really close throughout that match, but it's not amoral victory. We have to be able to seal the deal. I hope that we're able to use this as a building block."
- Eleven different Chippewas won at least one match during CMU's four duals on Friday, including six who are vying to be fixtures in CMU's lineup for the first time in their career.
- "That part of it is encouraging," Borrelli said. "We have a young team that should improve if we believe in what we are doing and start to make some changes. Even for a lot of our older guys, this is their first time competing in this type of environment where they are 'the guy.'
- "We traveled 14 guys, and we had an opportunity to wrestle each of the guys that we brought," he added. "This was a good opportunity to evaluate our personnel."
CMU won eight of the 10 individual bouts in its opening dual against Bucknell. Seven were by decision, while Tony D'Alie posted an 8-0 major decision at 141 pounds. The Chippewas' second match of the day was against top-ranked and defending national champion Iowa. True freshman Scotti Sentes was leading two-time All-American Charlie Falck in the third period at 125 pounds before Falck turned the tables and pinned Sentes as 5:49. Joey Slaton (133), an All-American in 2008, and Alex Tsirtsis (141) followed with narrow decisions over Conor Beebe and Eric Kruger, respectively.
Brent Metcalf, the defending national champion at 149 and 2008 Dan Hodge Trophy recipient, earned a 9-5 decision over Steve Brown to extend Iowa's lead to 15-0. True freshman Eric Cubberly got the Chippewas on the scoreboard with a 3-1 decision at 157 pounds. Iowa would claim the next three bouts, however, as Ryan Morningstar edged Trevor Stewart, 3-1, Jay Borschel topped Mike Miller, 6-1, and Phil Keddy defeated Vince DiDona, 2-1.
- Jarod Trice closed the dual with a 3-2 decision for CMU at heavyweight. The Chippewas rebounded to win six individual bouts in a 27-12 win over American and seven bouts in a 27-10 win over Drexel. Sentes and Beebe scored major decisions and Kruger followed with a decision to give CMU an early 11-0 lead against American. Stewart added six points with a forfeit victory at 165 pounds, and DiDona and Trice added wins for CMU.
Matt Steintrager picked up a forfeit victory at 125 pounds to give CMU an early 6-0 edge against Drexel. Beebe
followed with a decision, and D'Alie posted a technical fall at 141 to extend CMU's lead to 14-0.

No. 4 Central Michigan University Clinches 10th Straight MAC Title
- MOUNT PLEASANT ˆ Central Michigan University secured the outright Mid-American Conference wrestling title, its 10th consecutive championship, with a 45-0 win over Ohio at Rose Arena on Sunday.
- The No. 4-ranked Chippewas (16-2 overall, 5-0 MAC) have won 12 MAC titles overall. Sunday‚s win was CMU‚s 29th straight in MAC action and 53rd in its last 54 conference outings. The Chippewas have finished with unbeaten MAC records each of the last five seasons.
- CMU‚s seven seniors˜Brandon Carter, Bubba Gritter, Ben Kelto, Wynn Michalak, Brandon Sinnott, Christian Sinnott and Luke Smith˜were honored prior to the start of Sunday‚s dual. The senior class helped lead the Chippewas to four straight conference titles and perfect 20-0 mark in MAC duals during its career.
- The Chippewas capped their championship campaign in dominating fashion, rolling up a season-high 45 points and posting their third shutout of the season. The 45-point margin of victory was the largest in a MAC dual since a 46-0 win over Miami in 1999.
- Smith (125 pounds), Carter (149) and Michalak (197) all recorded falls in their final Rose Arena appearance. CMU also scored bonus points at 133 (major decision), 157 (major decision), 165 (void) and 285 (major decision).
- Michalak‚s pin was his team-high 11th of the season and 48th of his career. He finishes the season with a perfect 15-0 dual record. Michalak also improved to 18-1 in his career in conference duals, the best career MAC record for a Chippewa since Casey Cunningham was also 18-1 from 1995-99.
- Smith opened the dual with his fifth fall of the season, pinning Heath Allen at the 4:04 mark. The win was Smith‚s eighth straight and 101st of his career.
- Conor Beebe stretched CMU's lead to 10-0 with an 11-3 major decision at 133 pounds. Beebe scored three takedowns in the win.
- A first-period takedown was all Eric Kruger needed in a 3-0 win at 141 pounds. He also tallied an escape in the second period.
- Carter posted CMU's second pin at 149. He put Kevin Christensen to his back at the 1:58 mark in the first period. The pin was Carter‚s fourth of the season.
- At 157, Steve Brown scored seven points in the third period en route to a 14-5 win over Clay Tucker. Brown led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-3 after the second period. He also built a riding time advantage of 3:19 during the match.
- Ohio (6-16 overall, 0-5 MAC) voided the 165-pound bout, and the forfeit extended CMU's lead to 29-0.

No. 4 Central Michigan Stay Unbeaten in MAC with 25-9 Win at No. 20 Kent State
- KENT, Ohio - Fourth-ranked Central Michigan scored wins in each of the final four bouts to break a 9-9 tie and claim a 25-9 win at No. 20 Kent State Friday night.
- The victory ensures CMU (15-2 overall, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) no less than a share of its 10th consecutive MAC title. The Chippewas can complete their fifth straight undefeated conference campaign with a victory over Ohio on Sunday.
- As has been the case for much of the last two seasons, the Chippewas relied on their top four weights to deliver the victory. Brandon Sinnott (174 pounds), Christian Sinnott (184), Wynn Michalak (197) and Bubba Gritter (285) closed the dual with four straight victories for CMU. Brandon Sinnott (major decision) and Michalak (fall) both scored bonus points, and the quartet improved to a combined 34-0 in conference duals over the past two seasons.
- CMU's Luke Smith opened the night with his 100th career victory, a 6-3 decision over Kent State's Nic Bedelyon. Smith is the third different Chippewa, joining Michalak and Brandon Sinnott, to reach the 100-win plateau this season.
- The Golden Flashes, however, answered with decisions at 133 and 141 pounds to take a 6-3 lead. It would be their only lead of the night, as Brandon Carter evened the score for CMU with an 8-3 decision at 149 pounds and Steve Brown earned an 8-2 decision at 157. Brown's victory put the Chippewas back in front, 9-6.
- Kurt Gross needed overtime to defeat Trevor Stewart, 6-4, at 165 pounds. His victory drew Kent State (14-5 overall, 4-1 MAC) even for the final time, 9-9.
- Brandon Sinnott broke the tie with his team-leading 24th victory of the season, a 14-6 major decision over Chris Estep. Christian Sinnott extended the CMU lead to 16-9 with a 3-2 decision over Eric Chine at 184 pounds.
- Michalak put the dual out of reach by pinning Michael Blackwell in the second period of their bout at 197 pounds. It was Michalak's 10th fall of the season and 47th of his career; he has now recorded at least 10 falls each of the last four seasons.
The dual ended with a rematch of the 2007 MAC Tournament heavyweight final in which defending champ Gritter posted a 7-4 decision over Kent State's Jermail Porter.
- The win was CMU's 28th straight in a conference dual and 52nd in its last 53 MAC duals. The Chippewas improved to 6-2 this season against ranked opponents.
- CMU closes the regular season at home against Ohio on Sunday at 2 p.m. The dual will be televised live on the CMU Public Broadcasting Network. CMU's seven seniors will be recognized prior to the match.

Holt was in the down position to begin the third period and took a 3-2 lead with an early escape, and a 2:28 riding time advantage accounted for the final point in his 4-2 decision.
- Tyler Grayson‚s takedown on the edge with seven seconds remaining was the difference in a 3-1 decision over 19th-ranked Matt Moley at 157 pounds. Grayson and Moley traded escapes in the second and third period for the only scoring before Grayson shot in with 30 seconds left in the third period. Both Grayson and Moley struggled for control in the closing seconds before Grayson was able to score the decisive takedown.

- A 9-1 major decision by No. 5 Wynn Michalak at 197 pounds and a 6-1 decision by No. 8 Bubba Gritter at heavyweight, however, put the match out of reach. Michalak‚s victory moved him into sole possession of fifth on CMU‚s career victories list; he is now 116-33 in his career.
- Smith‚s 19-3 technical fall, which saw him score a takedown and two nearfall points just 20 seconds into the match, and a 5-2 decision by Conor Beebe at 133 pounds gave the Chippewas an early 8-0 lead. Both Smith and Beebe amassed more than three minutes of riding time in their respective victories.
- Third-ranked Kellen Russell opened the scoring for Michigan with a 3-0 decision over No. 12 Eric Kruger at 141 pounds. The match was scoreless through two periods before Russell scored an escape and a takedown in third.
- Michigan‚s eighth-ranked Josh Churella followed Russell with a 14-6 major decision over Nathaniel Holt at 149 pounds. Churella won on the strength of six takedowns, the final of which came just before the final buzzer to secure the major decision.
- Jeff Marsh‚s 3-2 decision over Tyler Grayson at 157 pounds gave the Wolverines their only lead. After a scoreless first period, Marsh opened the second period with an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Grayson countered with a takedown, but Marsh evened the score at 2-2 with another escape later in the period. Marsh started in the top position to open the third period and eventually won the match via riding time.
- From there, CMU would win four of the final five bouts, including Stewart and Brandon Sinnott‚s victories at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, that had the near-sellout crowd on its feet. The win was CMU‚s 36th in 41 home duals dating back to the start of the 2000-01 season; the Chippewas have won their last nine home duals.
- CMU returns to action Saturday, opening the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule at Eastern Michigan. The dual begins at 6 p.m. CMU‚s next appearance at Rose Arena is Feb. 7 against Northern Illinois.

Borrelli Breaks Central Michigan Wins Record
- MOUNT PLEASANT - Tom Borrelli is now the winningest wrestling coach in Central Michigan University history.
- The Chippewas' 19-16 victory over Ohio State at National Duals on Saturday was Borrelli's 196th victory as head coach at CMU. He moved ahead of Chick Sherwood, who was 195-126-6 as CMU's head coach from 1969-85.
- The Chippewas finished 1-2 overall at National Duals, and Borrelli's record at CMU now stands at 196-87-6 (.689).
- Borrelli is in his 17th season at CMU. He has guided the Chippewas to nine Mid-American Conference championships and nine MAC Tournament titles, along with two top-10 and five top-15 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
- CMU has won at least 10 duals in 13 of Borrelli's first 16 seasons. Under his tutelage, CMU has produced one national champion, 23 All-Americans, 86 national qualifiers, 54 MAC champions, six MAC Wrestlers of the Year, seven MAC Freshmen of the Year, 32 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic honorees and 42 Academic All-MAC selections.
- CMU also has ranked in the top 16 nationally in team grade-point average each of the last 15 seasons. Eleven times during that span the Chippewas ranked in the top 10, including seven times in the top five.
Central Michigan's Christian Sinnott Selected MAC Wrestler of the Week
MOUNT PLEASANT ˆ Central Michigan University senior Christian Sinnott (Allen
Park, Mich./Allen Park HS) has been named Mid-American Confere nce Wrestler of
the Week.
Sinnott placed third at 184 pounds at the Midlands Championships last weekend.
Seeded third, he advanced to the semifinals before dropping a 2-1 decision to
No. 2 seed and eventual champion Jake Varner (Iowa State). Sinnott was 6-1
overall in the tournament, including a 5-3 decision over Iowa‚s Phil Keddy in
the third-place match.
Sinnott was one of three Chippewas to place third at Midlands, where CMU
finished third as a team. The third-place finish matches CMU‚s second-best
showing at the event (second in 2005, third in 1998), and the Chippewas are one
of just two programs to finish in the top four at the tournament each of the
last four years.
Sinnott earns the conference‚s weekly honor for the first time in his career. He
is third CMU wrestler to collect the award this season, joining twin brother
Brandon Sinnott (Dec. 27) and Luke Smith (Nov. 29).
CMU, ranked fifth in this wee k‚s InterMat/NWCA top 25, returns to dual meet
action on Sunday, traveling to Hempstead, N.Y. to face No. 16 Hofstra (11 a.m.)
and No. 13 Edinboro (1 p.m.). The Chippewas enter the weekend having won 15
consecutive duals dating back to last season; a win against Hofstra would
establish a new school record for consecutive victories.
