Central Michigan Place Sixth at Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill. - Mike Miller's runner-up finish at 174 pounds helped lead Central Michigan to a sixth-place finish at the Midlands Championships Tuesday night.

Miller won his first five matches at the tournament, including a 6-3 decision over No. 1 seed Jay Borschel (Iowa) in the semifinals, before meeting American's Mike Cannon in the finals. Cannon scored a takedown in the first period of the championship bout, but Miller evened the score with a pair of escapes. Cannon began the third period in the bottom position and took a 3-2 lead with an escape 20 seconds into the period. Following a scramble in the match's closing seconds, Miller was initially credited with a takedown at the final horn. A brief discussion among the officials ensued, and the takedown was eventually waved off.

Miller is CMU's highest individual place finisher at Midlands since Wynn Michalak won the 197-pound title in 2005.

Iowa, on the strength of three individual champions and two runners-up, won the team title with 156.5 points. The Hawkeyes edged runner-up Iowa State, which had five individuals finisher runner-up and tallied 153.5 team points.

Two other Chippewas began the day in the semifinals: Scotti Sentes at 125 and Steve Brown at 149 pounds. Sentes, seeded sixth, fell to No. 2 seed and eventual champion Brandon Precin (Northwestern) in the semis, 5-0. Sentes then split a pair of wrestleback matches to finish fourth.
Brown, the fifth seed at 149 pounds, dropped a 9-4 decision to defending national champion Brent Metcalf (Iowa) in the 149-pound semifinals. Brown was then defeated in the first tiebreaker, 6-5, by American's Kyle Borshoff in his first wrestleback match before topping David Cheza (Michigan State), 9-3, in the fifth-place bout.

Also competing in the semifinals Tuesday was Tony D'Alie, who was competing unattached. He was defeated by Iowa's Alex Tsirtsis, 8-1, in the 141-pound semis, then split a pair of wrestleback matches to finish fourth. D'Alie, who did not count in CMU's team score, was not seeded in the 141-pound bracket.

Conor Beebe (eighth, 133 pounds) and Vince DiDona (eighth, 184 pounds) also earned spots on the medal stand for CMU.

CMU returns to dual meet action Saturday, visiting Michigan State at 1 p.m. The Chippewas have won seven straight duals against MSU.

Central Michigan Finish 3-1 at Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. - The No. 17-ranked Central Michigan wrestling team won three of its four matches at the Journeyman/Brute Northeast Duals on Saturday.

The one loss, however, may have been the Chippewas' most impressive effort of the day.
CMU posted wins of 25-6 over Bucknell, 24-12 over American and 30-10 over Drexel. The Chippewas' lone loss was a 27-6 decision to No. 1 Iowa, a dual in which five of the Hawkeyes' eight victories were by two points or less.

"I thought we competed really hard, but at crunch time we didn't seal deal," said CMU head coach Tom Borrelli. "Wewere up at 125 before the pin, we were right in the match at 133, at 141 we lost on a riding time point, at 165 welost in overtime and we had a last-second loss at 174. We were really close throughout that match, but it's not amoral victory. We have to be able to seal the deal. I hope that we're able to use this as a building block."

Eleven different Chippewas won at least one match during CMU's four duals on Friday, including six who are vying to be fixtures in CMU's lineup for the first time in their career.

"That part of it is encouraging," Borrelli said. "We have a young team that should improve if we believe in what we are doing and start to make some changes. Even for a lot of our older guys, this is their first time competing in this type of environment where they are 'the guy.'

"We traveled 14 guys, and we had an opportunity to wrestle each of the guys that we brought," he added. "This was a good opportunity to evaluate our personnel."

CMU won eight of the 10 individual bouts in its opening dual against Bucknell. Seven were by decision, while Tony D'Alie posted an 8-0 major decision at 141 pounds. The Chippewas' second match of the day was against top-ranked and defending national champion Iowa. True freshman Scotti Sentes was leading two-time All-American Charlie Falck in the third period at 125 pounds before Falck turned the tables and pinned Sentes as 5:49. Joey Slaton (133), an All-American in 2008, and Alex Tsirtsis (141) followed with narrow decisions over Conor Beebe and Eric Kruger, respectively.

Brent Metcalf, the defending national champion at 149 and 2008 Dan Hodge Trophy recipient, earned a 9-5 decision over Steve Brown to extend Iowa's lead to 15-0. True freshman Eric Cubberly got the Chippewas on the scoreboard with a 3-1 decision at 157 pounds. Iowa would claim the next three bouts, however, as Ryan Morningstar edged Trevor Stewart, 3-1, Jay Borschel topped Mike Miller, 6-1, and Phil Keddy defeated Vince DiDona, 2-1.

Jarod Trice closed the dual with a 3-2 decision for CMU at heavyweight. The Chippewas rebounded to win six individual bouts in a 27-12 win over American and seven bouts in a 27-10 win over Drexel. Sentes and Beebe scored major decisions and Kruger followed with a decision to give CMU an early 11-0 lead against American. Stewart added six points with a forfeit victory at 165 pounds, and DiDona and Trice added wins for CMU.

Matt Steintrager picked up a forfeit victory at 125 pounds to give CMU an early 6-0 edge against Drexel. Beebe
followed with a decision, and D'Alie posted a technical fall at 141 to extend CMU's lead to 14-0.
Drexel won decisions at 149 and 157 pounds, but Stewart won by major decision at 165, Miller by decision at 174 and DiDona by forfeit at 184 to stretch CMU's lead to 27-6. Trice closed the match with a 3-1 sudden-victory decision at heavyweight.

DiSalvo Named Central Michigan University Wrestling Top Assistant

MOUNT PLEASANT ˆ Central Michigan University head wrestling coach Tom Borrelli has named Mark DiSalvo the top assistant on his coaching staff.

DiSalvo is entering his second season as a member of the CMU staff. He served as the second assistant last season and now moves into the first assistant role vacated by Casey Cunningham. Cunningham has accepted a position on Cael Sanderson's staff at Iowa State.

"When you have the opportunity to retain people who have wrestled here and done well competitively you're always happy about that," Borrelli said. "Mark did a phenomenal job last year from an organizational and marketing standpoint. Those are his strengths and those are areas where we are looking to grow our program."

A 2005 graduate of CMU, DiSalvo returned to the program last season after serving as the director of operations at Cornell during the 2006-07 season.

DiSalvo was a two-time All-American at 149 pounds during his collegiate career. He placed eighth at both the 2005 and 2006 NCAA Championships. DiSalvo was the Mid-American Conference champion at 149 pounds both seasons and was named the MAC Tournament Outstanding Wrestler in 2006. He won CMU‚s Harry Richards Coaches Award, which recognizes team leadership and worth ethic, as a junior and the team‚s Most Outstanding Wrestler Award as a senior.

A two-time member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team, DiSalvo was the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and the MAC Commissioners Award for sustained academic excellence.

DiSalvo also has been involved at the club level, serving as executive director of Finger Lakes Wrestling Club and co-founder and director of Advantage Wrestling Club.

CMU won its 10th straight MAC championship and seventh straight conference tournament title in 2008. The Chippewas tied for seventh at the NCAA Championships, scoring a school-record 69 points. Four individuals earned All-America honors.

Davis (26-1 overall) took a 2-0 lead with a takedown midway through the first period. Michalak escaped later in the period, then evened the score at 2-2 with an escape after starting in the bottom position in the second period.

A takedown later in the second period gave Davis a 4-2 lead entering the third period. He scored an escape, was awarded a point when Michalak was called for stalling and added the riding time point for the 7-2 decision.

Michalak closes his senior season 30-2 overall. He is one of four Chippewas to earn All-America honors in 2008, joining Brandon Sinnott (fifth, 174 pounds), Christian Sinnott (fourth, 184 pounds) and Bubba Gritter (seventh, heavyweight).

The Chippewas finished tied for seventh in the team standings with 69 points. The 69 points are the most CMU has ever scored at the national tournament. The Chippewas last finished in the top 10 in 1999, when they were seventh with 67.5 points.

Session V Complete at NCAA Wrestling Championships

ST. LOUIS ˆ Three of Central Michigan University‚s four All-Americans completed their collegiate careers during the fifth session of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Saturday afternoon.

Christian Sinnott placed fourth at 184 pounds, Brandon Sinnott finished fifth at 174 pounds and Bubba Gritter placed seventh at heavyweight. Brandon Sinnott and Gritter are All-Americans for the second straight season, while Christian Sinnott is an All-American for the first time.
Just one match remains for CMU at the tournament. Fourth-seeded Wynn Michalak meets No. 2 seed Phil Davis (Penn State) in the 197-pound national championship match Saturday night. ESPN will televise the finals beginning at 8:30 p.m. EDT.

CMU enters the final session of competition at the tournament tied for sixth in the team standings with 69 points.

Christian Sinnott advanced to the 184-pound third-place match with a 7-4 decision over Iowa‚s Phil Keddy in the consolation semifinals. Sinnott scored three takedowns in recording his third victory over Keddy this season.

In the third-place match, however, Michigan‚s Tyrel Todd claimed a 3-2 decision over Sinnott. A third-period escape by Todd broke a 2-2 tie and provided the margin of victory.

Brandon Sinnott was defeated by Nebraska‚s Brandon Browne in the 174-pound consolation semis, 4-1. Browne scored a takedown in the second period, an escape in the third and tacked on the riding time point.

Sinnott rebounded to claim a 3-2 decision over Cornell‚s Steve Anceravage in the fifth-place match. An escape and a takedown in the second period provided all the points Sinnott would need in the victory.

Bubba Gritter claimed seventh place at heavyweight when Wisconsin‚s Kyle Massey injury defaulted.

With the clock ticking under 10 seconds and the wrestlers in the neutral position, Michalak took Askren down and cradled him to score a two-point nearfall.

Michalak scored an escape in the third period to extend his lead to 5-3, and Askren was only able to add the riding time point.

Michalak advances to face No. 1 seed and defending national champion Josh Glenn (American). Glenn enters the semifinals 18-0 this season. Michalak will carry a record of 29-1 into the semifinals.

No. 4 Central Michigan University Clinches 10th Straight MAC Title

MOUNT PLEASANT ˆ Central Michigan University secured the outright Mid-American Conference wrestling title, its 10th consecutive championship, with a 45-0 win over Ohio at Rose Arena on Sunday.

The No. 4-ranked Chippewas (16-2 overall, 5-0 MAC) have won 12 MAC titles overall. Sunday‚s win was CMU‚s 29th straight in MAC action and 53rd in its last 54 conference outings. The Chippewas have finished with unbeaten MAC records each of the last five seasons.

CMU‚s seven seniors˜Brandon Carter, Bubba Gritter, Ben Kelto, Wynn Michalak, Brandon Sinnott, Christian Sinnott and Luke Smith˜were honored prior to the start of Sunday‚s dual. The senior class helped lead the Chippewas to four straight conference titles and perfect 20-0 mark in MAC duals during its career.

The Chippewas capped their championship campaign in dominating fashion, rolling up a season-high 45 points and posting their third shutout of the season. The 45-point margin of victory was the largest in a MAC dual since a 46-0 win over Miami in 1999.

Smith (125 pounds), Carter (149) and Michalak (197) all recorded falls in their final Rose Arena appearance. CMU also scored bonus points at 133 (major decision), 157 (major decision), 165 (void) and 285 (major decision).

Michalak‚s pin was his team-high 11th of the season and 48th of his career. He finishes the season with a perfect 15-0 dual record. Michalak also improved to 18-1 in his career in conference duals, the best career MAC record for a Chippewa since Casey Cunningham was also 18-1 from 1995-99.
Smith opened the dual with his fifth fall of the season, pinning Heath Allen at the 4:04 mark. The win was Smith‚s eighth straight and 101st of his career.

Conor Beebe stretched CMU's lead to 10-0 with an 11-3 major decision at 133 pounds. Beebe scored three takedowns in the win.

A first-period takedown was all Eric Kruger needed in a 3-0 win at 141 pounds. He also tallied an escape in the second period.

Carter posted CMU's second pin at 149. He put Kevin Christensen to his back at the 1:58 mark in the first period. The pin was Carter‚s fourth of the season.

At 157, Steve Brown scored seven points in the third period en route to a 14-5 win over Clay Tucker. Brown led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-3 after the second period. He also built a riding time advantage of 3:19 during the match.

Ohio (6-16 overall, 0-5 MAC) voided the 165-pound bout, and the forfeit extended CMU's lead to 29-0.

Brandon Sinnott earned a 9-6 decision at 174 pounds, his team-leading 25th victory of the season. Christian Sinnott followed with a 10-3 decision at 184, his 23rd victory of the year and 95th of his career.

Michalak was leading 14-4 at 197 pounds before pinning Chris Iammarino at the 6:36 mark. Michalak finishes the regular season with an overall record of 24-1; he has won 13 straight matches.
Gritter capped the victory with a 20-6 major decision at heavyweight. Gritter scored eight takedowns in the victory and amassed a riding time advantage of 4:33.

CMU is off next weekend before traveling to Kent State for the Mid-American Conference Championships on March 7-8. The Chippewas have won six straight conference tournament titles.

No. 4 Central Michigan Stay Unbeaten in MAC with 25-9 Win at No. 20 Kent State

KENT, Ohio - Fourth-ranked Central Michigan scored wins in each of the final four bouts to break a 9-9 tie and claim a 25-9 win at No. 20 Kent State Friday night.

The victory ensures CMU (15-2 overall, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) no less than a share of its 10th consecutive MAC title. The Chippewas can complete their fifth straight undefeated conference campaign with a victory over Ohio on Sunday.

As has been the case for much of the last two seasons, the Chippewas relied on their top four weights to deliver the victory. Brandon Sinnott (174 pounds), Christian Sinnott (184), Wynn Michalak (197) and Bubba Gritter (285) closed the dual with four straight victories for CMU. Brandon Sinnott (major decision) and Michalak (fall) both scored bonus points, and the quartet improved to a combined 34-0 in conference duals over the past two seasons.

CMU's Luke Smith opened the night with his 100th career victory, a 6-3 decision over Kent State's Nic Bedelyon. Smith is the third different Chippewa, joining Michalak and Brandon Sinnott, to reach the 100-win plateau this season.
The Golden Flashes, however, answered with decisions at 133 and 141 pounds to take a 6-3 lead. It would be their only lead of the night, as Brandon Carter evened the score for CMU with an 8-3 decision at 149 pounds and Steve Brown earned an 8-2 decision at 157. Brown's victory put the Chippewas back in front, 9-6.

Kurt Gross needed overtime to defeat Trevor Stewart, 6-4, at 165 pounds. His victory drew Kent State (14-5 overall, 4-1 MAC) even for the final time, 9-9.

Brandon Sinnott broke the tie with his team-leading 24th victory of the season, a 14-6 major decision over Chris Estep. Christian Sinnott extended the CMU lead to 16-9 with a 3-2 decision over Eric Chine at 184 pounds.
Michalak put the dual out of reach by pinning Michael Blackwell in the second period of their bout at 197 pounds. It was Michalak's 10th fall of the season and 47th of his career; he has now recorded at least 10 falls each of the last four seasons.

The dual ended with a rematch of the 2007 MAC Tournament heavyweight final in which defending champ Gritter posted a 7-4 decision over Kent State's Jermail Porter.

The win was CMU's 28th straight in a conference dual and 52nd in its last 53 MAC duals. The Chippewas improved to 6-2 this season against ranked opponents.

CMU closes the regular season at home against Ohio on Sunday at 2 p.m. The dual will be televised live on the CMU Public Broadcasting Network. CMU's seven seniors will be recognized prior to the match.

No. 5 Central Michigan 35, Bloomsburg 0

MOUNT PLEASANT ˆ Central Michigan University won its fifth consecutive dual Sunday afternoon, handing Bloomsburg a 35-0 defeat in a nonconference matchup at Rose Arena.
The victory was CMU‚s 11th straight at home. It marked the second time this season the Chippewas have shut out an opponent.

CMU claimed victories in all 10 individual bouts, but four were decided by two points or less. The Chippewas tallied bonus points in three matches.

Luke Smith gave the Chippewas an early 3-0 advantage with a 6-1 decision at 125 pounds. Smith scored takedowns in the second and third period in his fifth consecutive victory.
At 133, CMU‚s Conor Beebe snapped a two-match skid with a 12-6 decision over Jason Guffey. Beebe scored a pair of takedowns in the first period to take a 4-2 lead. Guffey opened the second period with a reversal, but Beebe countered with an escape and a takedown to stretch his lead to 7-4. He added a pair of escapes and a takedown in the third period, along with the riding time point, for the 12-6 decision.

Eric Kruger stretched the CMU lead to 9-0 with a 6-0 decision at 141 pounds. Kruger tallied takedowns in the first and third period to post his 20th victory of the season.

The CMU lead grew to 12-0 with Nathaniel Holt‚s 4-2 decision over Dennis Bermudez at 149 pounds. Holt led 2-1 following the first period and rode Bermudez for the first 1:59 of the second period. Bermudez evened the score with an escape with one second left in the period. Holt was in the down position to begin the third period and took a 3-2 lead with an early escape, and a 2:28 riding time advantage accounted for the final point in his 4-2 decision.

Tyler Grayson‚s takedown on the edge with seven seconds remaining was the difference in a 3-1 decision over 19th-ranked Matt Moley at 157 pounds. Grayson and Moley traded escapes in the second and third period for the only scoring before Grayson shot in with 30 seconds left in the third period. Both Grayson and Moley struggled for control in the closing seconds before Grayson was able to score the decisive takedown.

The 165-pound bout also was decided in the closing seconds, as Trevor Stewart tallied a reversal with just less than 30 seconds remaining to defeat Rickey Schmelyun, 4-2. The match was scoreless entering the third period, but Stewart took a 2-0 lead with a reversal early in the period. Schmelyun answered with a reversal of his own, but Stewart took the lead for good with his second reversal late in the period. Stewart‚s victory stretched the CMU lead to 18-0.
Brandon Sinnott was the first individual to tally bonus points for the Chippewas, scoring a 12-4 major decision at 174 pounds. Sinnott recorded three takedowns in the first period and held a riding time advantage of 3:02 in the major decision.

Christian Sinnott followed with a 13-2 major decision at 184 pounds. Sinnott led 7-1 after a first period that saw him score a pair of takedowns and a three-point nearfall. He added a takedown in each of the final two periods and built a riding time advantage of 3:08.

At 197 pounds, Wynn Michalak needed just 1:04 to pin Eric Shaw and move into sole possession of third place on CMU‚s career falls list. Michalak improved to 21-1 this season with his ninth fall of the year and 46th of his career.

The heavyweight bout was the only matchup of the day featuring a pair of ranked competitors. CMU‚s Bubba Gritter, ranked ninth, scored a first-period takedown and a third-period escape to claim a 3-2 decision over 10th-ranked Mike Spaid. The victory was Gritter‚s sixth straight and 20th of the year.

No. 9 Central Michigan 21, No. 4 Michigan 13

MOUNT PLEASANT ˆ Ninth-ranked Central Michigan topped No. 4 Michigan, 21-13, in front of a raucous, Rose Arena record-crowd of 4,273 Sunday afternoon.

The fourth-ranked Wolverines (13-3 overall) are the highest ranked opponent CMU has defeated since a 19-15 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma at National Duals in 2006. The Chippewas (9-2 overall) have now defeated Michigan each of the last two seasons.
The Chippewas (9-2 overall) won six of the 10 individual bouts on Sunday, tallying bonus points in two of the six victories. Luke Smith staked the Chippewas to an early 5-0 lead with a technical fall at 125 pounds, but the Wolverines would post victories at 141, 149 and 157 pounds to build a 10-8 lead.

CMU answered with back-to-back victories at 165 and 174 pounds to take the lead for good.
Eleventh-ranked Trevor Stewart posted arguably the biggest win of his career at 165 pounds, upsetting No. 2 Eric Tannenbaum, 5-3. Tannenbaum scored an early takedown and led 2-1 after one period, but Stewart rode Tannenbaum for the entire second period. Stewart started in the down position to begin the third, and Tannenbaum allowed an uncontested escape to even the score at 2-2. Stewart took advantage, scoring a takedown later in the period to take a 4-2 lead. Tannenbaum would escape, but Stewart‚s 2:06 riding time advantage was the difference in the 5-3 decision His victory put the Chippewas in front, 11-10.

The 174-pound match featured seventh-ranked Brandon Sinnott and fourth-ranked Steve Luke. Sinnott scored a takedown in the second period to take a 2-0 lead, but escapes by Luke later in the second period and early in the third evened the score at 2-2. After a scoreless first sudden victory period, both Sinnott and Luke tallied an escape in the first tiebreaker to knot the score at 3-3.

The pair again went scoreless in the second sudden victory period. Luke began the second tiebreaker in the down position and scored an escape to take a 4-3 lead. Sinnott tallied an escape in the second half of the tiebreaker to draw even at 4-4. Neither wrestler would score again, but Sinnott‚s nine-second riding time advantage in the overtime periods served as the tiebreaker in a 5-4 victory.

Michigan drew back within a point, 14-13, when No. 2-ranked Tyrel Todd claimed a 6-4 decision over No. 4-ranked Christian Sinnott at 184 pounds.

A 9-1 major decision by No. 5 Wynn Michalak at 197 pounds and a 6-1 decision by No. 8 Bubba Gritter at heavyweight, however, put the match out of reach. Michalak‚s victory moved him into sole possession of fifth on CMU‚s career victories list; he is now 116-33 in his career.

Smith‚s 19-3 technical fall, which saw him score a takedown and two nearfall points just 20 seconds into the match, and a 5-2 decision by Conor Beebe at 133 pounds gave the Chippewas an early 8-0 lead. Both Smith and Beebe amassed more than three minutes of riding time in their respective victories.

Third-ranked Kellen Russell opened the scoring for Michigan with a 3-0 decision over No. 12 Eric Kruger at 141 pounds. The match was scoreless through two periods before Russell scored an escape and a takedown in third.

Michigan‚s eighth-ranked Josh Churella followed Russell with a 14-6 major decision over Nathaniel Holt at 149 pounds. Churella won on the strength of six takedowns, the final of which came just before the final buzzer to secure the major decision.

Jeff Marsh‚s 3-2 decision over Tyler Grayson at 157 pounds gave the Wolverines their only lead. After a scoreless first period, Marsh opened the second period with an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Grayson countered with a takedown, but Marsh evened the score at 2-2 with another escape later in the period. Marsh started in the top position to open the third period and eventually won the match via riding time.

From there, CMU would win four of the final five bouts, including Stewart and Brandon Sinnott‚s victories at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, that had the near-sellout crowd on its feet. The win was CMU‚s 36th in 41 home duals dating back to the start of the 2000-01 season; the Chippewas have won their last nine home duals.

CMU returns to action Saturday, opening the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule at Eastern Michigan. The dual begins at 6 p.m. CMU‚s next appearance at Rose Arena is Feb. 7 against Northern Illinois.

Central Michigan Conclude Action at National Duals
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Central Michigan University won its first-round match at National Duals for the third consecutive season, but consecutive losses to the defending national champion and 2007 national runner-up eliminated the Chippewas from the tournament on Saturday.

CMU (8-2 overall) extended its winning streak to a school-record 18 matches with a 19-16 victory over 11th-ranked Ohio State in the first round Saturday morning. Both sides won five individual bouts in a match that saw the teams alternate wins throughout.

Luke Smith opened the match with a 10-2 major decision at 125 pounds, but Ohio State's Reece Humphrey evened the team score at 4-4 with a major decision over Conor Beebe at 133. From there, Eric Kruger (141), Tyler Grayson (157) and Brandon Sinnott (174) earned decisions for CMU, while the Buckeyes answered with decisions of their own at 149, 165 and 184 pounds.
The team score was even at 13-13 entering the 197-pound match, where Wynn Michalak pinned John Weakley to put the Chippewas in front for good, 19-13. Ohio State's J.D. Bergman topped Bubba Gritter, 3-2, in the final bout of the match.

The win was Tom Borrelli's 196th as head coach at CMU, moving him into first place on the school's career wins list.

In the second round, defending national champion Minnesota won six of the first seven individual bouts on its way to a 20-16 win over the Chippewas. The Golden Gophers scored a pair of decisions and a major in the first three matches to build a 10-0 lead before CMU's Nathaniel Holt won by fall at 149 pounds. Minnesota claimed wins at 157, 165 and 174 pounds, however, to stretch its lead to 20-3.

Christian Sinnott (184), Michalak (197) and Gritter (heavyweight) closed the dual with three consecutive victories for the Chippewas.

CMU returned to the mat early Saturday evening to meet 2007 national runner-up Iowa State in consolation bracket action. The Cyclones won eight of the 10 individual bouts to post a 25-6 victory and eliminate CMU from the tournament.

The Chippewas' lone wins against Iowa State were decisions by Eric Kruger at 141 pounds and Michalak at 197.

CMU is back in action next Sunday, Jan. 20, hosting Michigan in Rose Arena at 2 p.m. The Wolverines, ranked seventh in this week's InterMat/NWCA top 25, will meet Iowa in the National Duals semifinals on Sunday morning.

Borrelli Breaks Central Michigan Wins Record

MOUNT PLEASANT - Tom Borrelli is now the winningest wrestling coach in Central Michigan University history.

The Chippewas' 19-16 victory over Ohio State at National Duals on Saturday was Borrelli's 196th victory as head coach at CMU. He moved ahead of Chick Sherwood, who was 195-126-6 as CMU's head coach from 1969-85.

The Chippewas finished 1-2 overall at National Duals, and Borrelli's record at CMU now stands at 196-87-6 (.689).

Borrelli is in his 17th season at CMU. He has guided the Chippewas to nine Mid-American Conference championships and nine MAC Tournament titles, along with two top-10 and five top-15 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

CMU has won at least 10 duals in 13 of Borrelli's first 16 seasons. Under his tutelage, CMU has produced one national champion, 23 All-Americans, 86 national qualifiers, 54 MAC champions, six MAC Wrestlers of the Year, seven MAC Freshmen of the Year, 32 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic honorees and 42 Academic All-MAC selections.
CMU also has ranked in the top 16 nationally in team grade-point average each of the last 15 seasons. Eleven times during that span the Chippewas ranked in the top 10, including seven times in the top five.
Central Michigan's Christian Sinnott Selected MAC Wrestler of the Week

MOUNT PLEASANT ˆ Central Michigan University senior Christian Sinnott (Allen
Park, Mich./Allen Park HS) has been named Mid-American Confere nce Wrestler of
the Week.

Sinnott placed third at 184 pounds at the Midlands Championships last weekend.
Seeded third, he advanced to the semifinals before dropping a 2-1 decision to
No. 2 seed and eventual champion Jake Varner (Iowa State). Sinnott was 6-1
overall in the tournament, including a 5-3 decision over Iowa‚s Phil Keddy in
the third-place match.

Sinnott was one of three Chippewas to place third at Midlands, where CMU
finished third as a team. The third-place finish matches CMU‚s second-best
showing at the event (second in 2005, third in 1998), and the Chippewas are one
of just two programs to finish in the top four at the tournament each of the
last four years.

Sinnott earns the conference‚s weekly honor for the first time in his career. He
is third CMU wrestler to collect the award this season, joining twin brother
Brandon Sinnott (Dec. 27) and Luke Smith (Nov. 29).

CMU, ranked fifth in this wee k‚s InterMat/NWCA top 25, returns to dual meet
action on Sunday, traveling to Hempstead, N.Y. to face No. 16 Hofstra (11 a.m.)
and No. 13 Edinboro (1 p.m.). The Chippewas enter the weekend having won 15
consecutive duals dating back to last season; a win against Hofstra would
establish a new school record for consecutive victories.
Central Michigan's Chippewas Place Third at Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill. - Seven individuals placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes to lead Central Michigan University to a third-place finish at the 2007 Midlands Championships.

The third-place finish matches the Chippewas' second-highest placement as a team at Midlands. CMU placed second in 2005 and third in 1998; the Chippewas have finished in the top four at Midlands each of the last four seasons. Iowa is the only other program to finish in the top four as a team at Midlands each of the last four seasons.
Iowa won the 2007 team title with 185 points. Iowa State was third with 139 points, while Central Michigan (117.5), Illinois (100) and Northwestern (89.5) rounded out the top five.

Four Chippewas entered the second day of competition still alive in the championship bracket, but Brandon Sinnott (174 pounds), Christian Sinnott (184), Wynn Michalak (197) and Bubba Gritter (285) all fell in the semifinals of their respective weight classes. Brandon Sinnott, seeded second, dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 6 seed Jay Borschel (Iowa); Christian Sinnott, seeded third, fell to No. 2 seed Jake Varner (Iowa State), 2-1; No. 3 seed Michalak was defeated by No. 2 seed Mike Tamillow (Northwestern), 8-6; and Gritter, seeded third, fell to No. 2 seed Mike Faust (Hawk WC), 5-3 in the second tiebreaker.

Brandon Sinnott, Christian Sinnott and Michalak all rebounded to place third. In a rematch of a 174-pound quarterfinal, Sinnott defeated No. 7 seed Josh Chelf (Wis.-LaCrosse), 3-2, in the third-place match. Sinnott had defeated Chelf, 3-1, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Christian Sinnott won a pair of consolation matches to place third. He was a 5-2 winner over No. 4 seed Louis Caputo (Harvard) and a 5-3 victor over Phil Keddy (Iowa) in the third-place match. Sinnott had defeated Keddy, 3-2, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Michalak defeated a pair of seeded wrestlers to finish third at 197. He earned a 7-2 decision over No. 8 seed Andrew Anderson (Northern Iowa) and a 4-1 decision over No. 4 seed T.J. Morrison (Rider) in the wrestleback.
After dropping his semifinal match, Gritter was upset by No. 8 seed Nik Fekete (Hawk WC) in the consolation bracket. He bounced back to defeat No. 7 seed Zach Sheaffer (Pitt) in the fifth-place match.

Also contributing to CMU's team point total were Trevor Stewart with a sixth-place finish at 165 pounds, Brandon Carter with a seventh-place finish at 149 and Eric Kruger with an eighth-place finish at 141.

CMU returns to dual meet action on Jan. 6, traveling to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra and Edinboro.
No. 6 Central Michigan Wins Second Straight Reno Tournament Title

Led by first-place finishes by Luke Smith (125 pounds), Brandon Sinnott (174), Christian Sinnott (184) and Wynn Michalak (197), the sixth-ranked Chippewas tallied 152.5 team points to defend their Reno team title. Oklahoma State finished second with 128 points, while Cornell was third with 99 points.
A total of 10 Chippewas placed in the top six of their respective weight classes to contribute to the team score. Trevor Stewart finished runner-up at 165 pounds, Eric Kruger was third at 141, Nathaniel Holt (149) and Bubba Gritter (285) placed fifth and Conor Beebe (133) and Tyler Grayson (157) placed sixth.
Also of note was Ben Kelto, competing unattached, advancing to the semis at 184 before eventually placing fifth.

Smith entered the tournament seeded second at 125 pounds. He defeated the No. 3 seed, Cal Poly's Boris Navochkov, 3-1 in the semis before claiming a 4-3 decision over No. 1 seed Tanner Gardner (Stanford) in the championship match. Gardner, a 2007 All-American, entered the tournament ranked fourth nationally at 125.

Brandon Sinnott, seeded third at 174 pounds, defeated the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds en route to his title. After a pair of major decisions in his first two matches, Sinnott advanced to the semis via a 3-2 decision over an unattached Ryan Smith. A 4-2 decision over No. 2 seed Brandon Mason (Oklahoma State) in the semis qualified Sinnott for the finals, where he blanked top-seeded Matt Stolpinski (Navy), 4-0.
Christian Sinnott matched his twin brother with a title at 184. An opening-round pin and a pair of decisions moved the second-seeded Sinnott into the semis, where he earned a 9-2 decision over Cornell's Michael Moore. Cal State Fullerton's Ian Murphy medical forfeited the championship match to Sinnott.
Michalak proved worthy of the No. 1 seed at 197 pounds, recording two falls, a major decision and a technical fall, respectively, to advance to the finals. He clinched the championship with a 3-1 decision over Arizona State's Jason Trulson, a national qualifier in 2007.

Stewart steamrolled his way to the finals at 165 pounds before falling to No. 3 seed Mack Lewness (Cornell). Stewart, seeded fourth, posted a 6-3 decision over No. 1 seed, and nationally fourth ranked, Pat Pitsch (Arizona State).

Third-seeded Kruger was upset in his first-round match at 141 pounds but rebounded to win seven consecutive matches in the wrestle backs to place third. Of Kruger's seven wins, three were by major decision and one by technical fall; he claimed a 15-6 major decision over Elijah Nacita (Cal State Bakersfield) in the third-place match.

Both Holt and Brandon Carter advanced to the quarterfinals at 149 pounds before Holt ultimately placed fifth. He defeated Jeremy Doyle (Cal State Bakersfield), 8-6, in the fifth-place match.

CMU returns to action on Dec. 29-30, competing at Midlands in Evanston, Ill. The Chippewas placed fourth in the 56-team field last year.

Six Chippewas Win Titles as Central Michigan Claims Sixth Straight MAC Championships Crown

BUFFALO, N.Y. ˆ Six Central Michigan University wrestlers won individual titles
to lead the Chippewas to their sixth consecutive Mid-American Conference
Championships title.

CMU won the team title with 106.5 points. Kent State was second with 73.5
points.

Winning individual conference championships and earning automatic bids to the
NCAA Championships were Eric Kruger (141 pounds), Mike Miller (165), Brandon
Sinnott (174), Christian Sinnott (184), Wynn Michalak (197) and Bubba Gritter
(285). Wild card bids to the national tournament will be announced later Sunday.
CMU also claimed three of the conference‚s four specialty awards. Tom Borrelli
was named MAC Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season and ninth time in
his career. Miller was named MAC Freshman of the Year, becoming the ninth
Chippewa to win the honor. Michalak was selected MAC Wrestler of the Year for
the second year in a row. He joins 1999 national champion Casey Cunningham as
Chippewas who have won the award twice.

Michalak also becomes the seventh CMU wrestler to win three individual MAC
titles.

Kruger was the first Chippewa to punch his ticket to nationals, posting a
convincing 10-1 major decision over Northern Illinois‚ Dan Ruettiger in the
finals at 141 pounds. Following a scoreless first period, Kruger scored a
takedown and two back points to take a 4-0 lead into the third period. Kruger‚s
lead expanded to 7-0 with a takedown and stalling point, but Ruettiger escaped
late in the third to cut the deficit to 7-1. Kruger answered with a takedown
just before the final buzzer to ensure the major, then tacked on the riding time
point with an advantage of 3:06.

Miller, a redshirt freshman, won a conference title in his first try at 165
pounds. Miller trailed 4-2 after the first period, but rallied with an escape
and a takedown in the second period. Miller‚s takedown came with less than 10
seconds remaining in the period. Galloway would even the score with an escape
late in the third, but Miller‚s 1:16 riding time advantage was the difference in
his 6-5 decision.

Brandon and Christian Sinnott completed a sweep of Northern Illinois Danny and
Duke Burk at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Brandon Sinnott won his second
consecutive MAC title at 174 pounds with a 10-4 decision, while Christian
Sinnott won his first conference championship with a 4-0 decision over Duke
Burk. Both Sinnotts will make their second consecutive trip to the national
championships.

Michalak won his third consecutive MAC title at 197 pounds with a methodical 7-2
decision over Eastern Michigan‚s Tony Lyssiotis. Michalak scored a takedown in
the first period, then rode Lyssiotis for nearly the duration of the second
period. After starting in the down position, Michalak added an escape and a
takedown in the third, then added the riding time point with an advantage of
3:43.

Gritter won his first MAC title by earning a 4-1 advantage over defending
champion Jermail Porter at heavyweight. Gritter opened the sc oring with an
escape in the second period, then was the recipient of a point for Porter
stalling. After a Porter escape in third, Gritter sealed the win with a takedown
later in the period.

No. 5 Central Michigan Dominates No. 25 Kent State, 34-3, to Win MAC Title

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University locked up its ninth consecutive
Mid-American Conference title with a convincing 34-3 win over Kent State Sunday
afternoon in Rose Arena.

The Chippewas won 9-of-10 individual bouts in extending their winning streak to
10 consecutive duals. The victory was CMU's 23rd straight in conference action
and secured the program's 11th MAC title overall. It was also CMU's 17th victory
this season, establishing a new single-season school record.

After splitting the first two matches, CMU went on to post wins in each of the
final eight individual bouts.

Luke Smith opened the day with a 3-2 decision over Chad Sportelli at 125 pounds.
Smith scored a takedown on the edge of mat one minute in, then built a riding
time advantage of 1:45 in the first period. After a scoreless second period,
Sportelli scored a takedown with just over a minute remaining to even the score
at 2-2. Smith escaped just seconds later, however, to score decisive point.

At 133, Conor Beebe built a 3-0 lead with an escape and takedown in the second
period. Danny Mitcheff opened the third period with an escape, the scored a
takedown 30 seconds into the period to even the score at 3-3. Following a blood
timeout, Beebe scored an escape with 18 seconds remaining to take a 4-3 lead.
Mitcheff, however, tallied a takedown at the buzzer and collected the riding
time point for a 6-4 decision.

Eric Kruger's takedown in the closing seconds of the second period was the
difference in  a 3-1 decision over Drew Lashaway at 141. Starting in the down
position, Kruger scored an escape early in the second period, then took down
Lashaway in the final 10 seconds to lead 3-0 entering the third. Lashaway's
escape in the third accounted for his only points.

Tyler Grayson evened his conference record at 2-2 with a 6-4 decision over Jason
McGee. Grayson scored takedowns in the first and second period, then secured the
win with a reversal midway through the third after starting the period in the
down position. All four of McGee's points came via escapes.

In his final appearance at Rose Arena, senior Andy Keller posted a 9-6 decision
over Kurt Gross at 157 pounds. After Gross evened the score at 5-5 with a
takedown in the third, Keller answered with an escape and takedown of his own to
take an 8-5 advantage. Gross tacked on a late escape, but Keller also tallied
the single point for riding time for the final three-point difference.

Mike Miller controlled the action from start to finish in his 11-1 major
decision over Sli Bostelman at 165 pounds. Miller tallied a trio of takedowns
and built a riding time advantage of 4:35 in the win. The only point he allowed
was an escape that he gave away in the third period.

CMU extended its lead to 22-3 when Kent State's Aaron Miller was disqualified at
174 points. CMU's Brandon Sinnott was leading 11-3 at the time, and had been
granted four unsportsmanlike conduct points during the course of the match after
Miller repeatedly slapped Sinnott in the head.

At 184 pounds, Christian Sinnott scored takedowns in each of the first periods
on his way to a 5-1 win over Eric Chine. A third-period escape was the only
scoring Chine would muster.

Wynn Michalak had a 9-0 lead with he pinned Ardian Ramadani at 197 pounds. The
fall was Michalak's eighth of the season and 34th in his career.

At heavyweight, Bubba Gritter earned a 6-3 decision over Jermail Porter. Gritter
built a 3-0 lead with a takedown late in the first period and an escape to open
the second. Porter cut the deficit to 3-2 with a takedown midway through the
second period, but Gritter escaped immediately after the restart. Porter,
starting in the down position, drew to within 4-3 with an escape early in the
third, but Gritter sealed the 6-3 decision with a takedown in the closing
seconds.

CMU now has two weeks to prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championships
at Buffalo March 3-4. The Chippewas have won five consecutive conference
tournament titles.

Central Michigan Places Seventh at National Duals
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Ninth-ranked Central Michigan University won seven of 10
individual bouts to defeat eighth-ranked Northwestern, 22-11, in the
seventh-place match at National Duals Sunday.

This marks the second straight year CMU has finished in the top eight at t he
tournament. Last season, the Chippewas placed a program-best fourth place at
National Duals.

CMU jumped on the Wildcats early, winning six of the first seven bouts overall

Conor Beebe's first win of the weekend at 133 pounds, a 1-0 decision over Eric
Metzler, got the Chippewas on the scoreboard, while No. 14 Eric Kruger's 4-0

CMU went on to win the next four bouts, capped by No. 5 Brandon Sinnott's 8-6
decision over Nick Hayes at 174 pounds. Sinnott finished the weekend a perfect
5-0, the lone Chippewa to wrestle multiple matches and post an unbeaten record
in the tournament.

The final two bouts of the day featured individuals ranked in the top 10
nationally. Northwestern's second-ranked Mike Tamillow posted a 9-3 decision
over No. 10 Wynn Michalak at 197 po unds; Tamillow has now claimed wins in each
of their three head-to-head matchups this season.

At heavyweight, fifth-ranked Bubba Gritter earned a 3-1 overtime decision over

difference. The victory for Gritter avenged a 4-2 loss to Fox in the semifinals

EAST LANSING - Central Michigan University won each of the final five bouts to
rally for a 21-14 victory over No. 22 Michigan State Friday night.

The ninth-ranked Chippewas trailed 14-4 midway through the dual, but closed with
victories at the five highest weights to record their sixth straight win overall
against Michigan State. CMU has returned with victories in its last three trips
to East Lansing.

The Chippewas improve to 3-2 in duals against teams ranked in the top 25 this
season.

The Spartans were dominant early, scoring major decisions at 125 and 133 pounds
to take a quick 8-0 lead. Victories at 141 and 157 for Michigan State sandwiched
Brandon Carter's 9-1 major decision at 149 that got CMU on the scoreboard.

Tony Greathouse needed a takedown in the closing seconds of the third period to
edge Andy Keller, 4-2, at 157 pounds. The win gave MSU its largest advantage of
the night at 14-4, but would also account for the final team points the Spartans
would score.

Mike Miller ignited the CMU comeback with a 3-1 sudden victory over Rocky Cozart
at 165 pounds. Fifth-ranked Brandon Sinnott followed with a 15-5 major decision
at 174 pounds that drew the Chippewas within three points, 14-11.

Williams, who last week finished runner-up at Midlands, in tying the team score
at 14 apiece.

Wynn Michalak and Bubba Gritter then sealed the win for CMU with their
team-leading 13th victories of the season. Michalak posted a 10-1 major decision
over Nick Palmieri at 197 to give the Chippewas their first lead, 18-14. Gritter
followed with a 10-5 decision over Alan O'Donnell. Gritter has now secured CMU's

Central Michigan Captures Team Title at 12th Annual Brute Reno Tournament of Champions

Reno, Nev. ˆ Central Michigan edged out Oklahoma State 132.5 to 131 to capture the team title at the 12th Annual Brute Reno Tournament of Champions, handing the Cowboys only its third runner-up finish in the tournament‚s history.

The Chippawas sent five wrestlers to the finals with a commanding lead in the team race, but came away with zero champions, which allowed the Cowboys to chip away at the lead. No. 6 CMU Wrestling Posts 30-3 Win at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. - In a match that was much closer than the final score would
indicate, Central Michigan University's sixth-ranked wrestling team won 9-of-10
individual bouts in a 30-3 Mid-American Conference dual win at Buffalo on
Sunday.

CMU improves to 10-4 overall, 2-0 in the MAC with the win. Buffalo (9-4, 2-2),
however, made the Chippewas earn their 16th straight conference victory. Seven
of the 10 bouts were decided by two points or less, including top-ranked Wynn
Michalak's 3-2 decision over fourth-ranked and previously unbeaten Kyle
Cerminara and Buffalo's Mike Ragusa's triple-overtime win over 13th-ranked
Brandon Sinnott.

CMU jumped to a 24-0 lead by winning the first six matchups and collecting a
forfeit at 125. The highlight of the contest, however, was the day's finale at

difference, as the sophomore withstood a late flurry from the two-time
conference champ Cerminara (33-1) for a 3-2 victory.

Michalak is now 2-1 this season against opponents ranked in the top five. His
other win was a 15-3 major decision over current No. 2 B.J. Padden (Nebraska),
while his lone loss was a 6-4 decision to No. 5 Joel Flaggert (Oklahoma).

Fifthteenth-ranked Bubba Gritter opened the match with a 5-3 win over Buffalo's
Harold Sherrell to give the Chippewas an early advantage. Following a Buffalo
forfeit at 125, No. 11 Jason Borrelli used an escape to po
