Cornell Wrestling Releases 2011-12 Schedule
-
ITHACA, N.Y.-The Big Red wrestling team has released its 2011-12 schedule that is filled with action at home on East Hill. Cornell will play host to six dual matches, the Body Bar Invitational, the New York State Intercollegiate championships and is a regional site for the National Duals. Coming off a second-place NCAA finish a year ago, Rob Koll's Big Red team opens its season at home against Minnesota on Friday, Nov. 18 at Newman Arena.
- The Golden Gophers finished seventh at the NCAA tournament last season. Cornell and Minnesota squared off at the 2011 National Duals, with the Big Red earning a 20-16 victory. One day later, the Big Red will play host to the Body Bar System Invitational in Newman Arena. Cornell will face competition from Army, Binghamton, Buffalo, Clarion, Drexel, Ithaca College, Kent State, Lock Haven, Minnesota, Sacred Heart and Virginia.
- The Big Red travels to Las Vegas, Nev. to defend its 2010 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational title on Dec. 2-3 before breaking for the winter holidays. In its first action of the new year, Cornell will compete at the Southern Scuffle, held for the first time in Chattanooga, Tenn.
- Cornell will take on EIWA foe Lehigh at home on Jan. 8 before opening its Ivy slate. The Big Red will be in search for its 10th straight Ivy League title and looks to extend its 48-match conference win streak beginning Jan. 14 when it heads to Penn and Princeton.
- On Jan. 21-22, the Big Red will play host to the New York State Intercollegiate championships with the junior varsity competing against the best teams in the state. A week later, Cornell will hit the road for a dual match on the campus of perennial powerhouse Iowa State.
- On Sunday, Feb. 12, Cornell will welcome Central Michigan, Oklahoma, Purdue, Illinois and American to Newman Arena as a regional location for the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division I National Dual Meet Championship. There are four regional competitions from which the final team from each location will advance to the championship on Feb. 19. The final event will be held on one of the final team's campuses.
- The National Duals rounds out Cornell's dual schedule. The Big Red will be in search of its sixth-straight EIWA team title on March 3-4 at Princeton. The 2012 NCAA championships return to St. Louis, Mo. March 15-17.
- Cornell returns six starters including five NCAA qualifiers and three All-Americans. Included among the returners are two-time NCAA champion, junior Kyle Dake, three-time All-American Cam Simaz and All-American Steve Bosak.
Cornell College Wrestling Team Carries Experience, No. 10 Ranking Into 2010-11 Campaign
MOUNT VERNON Cornell College head wrestling coach Mike Duroe takes one of his more experienced squads into a promising 2010-11 campaign, which begins Saturday at the Loras Open in Dubuque.
Cornell’s 31-man roster features 17 letterwinners, eight of which were in the varsity lineup at the Iowa Conference Championships last February when the Rams scored a school-best third-place team finish. That has created early optimism for this year’s Rams, who have inherited a No. 10 ranking in the NWCA Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
“We’re cautiously optimistic that we can be real competitive in the conference,” said Duroe, the 2009-10 IIAC Co-Coach of the Year entering his sixth season on the Hilltop. “We’re looking for more consistency this season. We’re hoping that will happen with the number of experienced wrestlers we have.”
The Rams are led by two-time all-American Kevin Donahue (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Christopher’s) and 2010 national qualifier Nicholas Loughlin (Cherokee/Washington). Both wrestlers captured IIAC titles last season, the first time the program has crowned multiple champions in the same meet in 13 years in the league.
Donahue, a senior 141-pounder, capped a strong 35-9 campaign with a fourth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships. He heads all active Rams with 79 career wins. Donahue is rated fourth at 141 in the NWCA Preseason Individual Poll. He was voted the team’s Most Dedicated wrestler last season.
Loughlin enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign with a 33-4 record at 157. He went undefeated against Division III foes until the national tournament. Loughlin, who owns a 41-9 career mark, is ranked sixth in the country in his weight class. He was named the team’s Most Improved wrestler in 2009-10.
Cornell finished 14-11 in dual competition, one win shy of the single-season school record. The Rams placed 12th at nationals with 25 points. It was the program’s fourth consecutive top-12 national team finish.
Cornell welcomes back eight wrestlers who won at least 19 matches a season ago. The Rams return a talented class of junior starters in Timothy Hood (22-16 last season at 125), Jacob Schwebke (27-16 at 149), Joe Hambleton (25-15 at 165/174) and Andrew Roberts (23-18 at 184). Senior Robert Widmer (19-15 at 197) and sophomore Wyatt Bauman (13-28 at 285) were also regulars in the starting lineup.
Hood placed fourth at last year’s IIAC meet. Schwebke, Hambleton and Roberts all finished fifth in the conference.
Other returning letterwinners include seniors Wesley Schoo (9-14 at 125), Micky Spiwak (4-6 at 125/133), Ryan Mulnix (national qualifier at 149 in 2009) and Cliff Robertson (14-20 at 174), juniors Michael Buhr (6-11 at 141), Tigue Snider (16-20 at 133), Zach Wilson (19-14 at 149) and Dan Gratz (11-20 at 165), and sophomore Andrew Anderson (10-25 at 197).
Duroe has compiled a 65-48-1 record at Cornell. The Rams have landed 17 national qualifiers and 12 all-Americans under his guidance. Duroe said there are three keys to this team’s success.
“A lot depends on how healthy we can be, how our young guys develop and what kind of leadership we get from our juniors and seniors,” Duroe said. “This is one of our more experienced teams. I’m also real pleased with our freshman class. They’ve already energized this team and challenged our older guys.”
Cornell has eight newcomers in the program. Three-time Hawaii placewinner Jordan Ng at 125, and two-time Wyoming placewinner Alex Coolidge at 184 both won state championships. Micah Flora-Swick (122-42 career) at 141, Derek Munsey (93-24 career) at 165 and Marcus Streit at 197/285 are all state placewinners.
The Rams lost two starters to graduation in Nick Nothern (24-9 at 133) and Alex Riniker (19-17 at 165). Nothern placed fifth at nationals last season, becoming the program’s sixth three-time all-American. He finished his career with 118 wins.
Cornell takes on another challenging schedule, which features up to 14 duals before Christmas. The home slate is highlighted with a triangular Nov. 26 against the University of Iowa and UT-Chattanooga, along with the Matman Invitational Jan. 15 and an IIAC dual with Wartburg Jan. 21.
The Rams are among six teams from the IIAC ranked nationally in the top 25. Wartburg is No. 2, Coe No. 4, Dubuque No. 11, Luther No. 14 and Buena Vista No. 23.
“Right now we’re trying to get through injuries. It’s already been a rough fall from that standpoint,” Duroe said. “We have a tough schedule. It’s real heavy in November and December, and that’s by design. We’ll get a lot of competition early in the year. It will be a balancing act between training and competition.”
