Cumberland's Wrestling Brothers

Cumberland University wrestling has three sets of brothers for the Fall 2008 school year; Adam and Estil (Trey) Myers, Cody and Corey Bleaken, and Andrew and James Casadaban.  Adam and Trey Myers were true freshman and a junior last year and both redshirted in the 2007-2008 season. This year they will be redshirt freshman and redshirt junior at 157 and 174 respectively. The Myers brothers went to Vandalia Butler High school in Dayton, Ohio. Trey Myers is a two-time NAIA national qualifier and led all freshmen in 2005-2006 with 21 wins. Adam is a two-time state alternate and will compete for a starting spot this season at 157 or 165.

This season two more sets of brothers will be added to the roster as Cody and Andrew will join their brothers Corey and James.  Cody and Corey Bleaken are from Clifton High school in Clifton, New Jersey. Cody will compete at the 133 or141 weight class and Corey will compete at the 149 or157 weight class. Cody was high school athlete of the year last year at Clifton High. Corey was 3rd in the NAIA national tournament in 2007 as a true freshman at 149 and had a school record 40 wins that season and was a national qualifier in 2008.

Andrew and James Casadaban are from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, Louisiana. Andrew will compete at 133 or 141 weight class and James will compete at 157 weight class. Andrew was a 2008 state champion for Brother Martin last year. James was a redshirt freshman last year and was a NAIA national qualifier.

Head coach Jarad Swint said "It is pretty unique to have three sets of brothers. It is great to see the family support that these young men get. They are all very different but one thing is for sure they all get good family support. We see each of their families during the season every year. The Myers family started things off this year by being at the first conditioning run. Adam and Trey's younger brother Jesse and Mr. Myers ran with us and Mrs. Myers was also present supporting the guys. Mr. Bleaken has been out to the national tournament every year and you can see how much he enjoys the sport. The Casadaban family is like an entire crew. Their parents, grandparents, girlfriends and other family members will show up at any number of tournaments. I know all of the families are excited about the season and we are looking forward to all of the family support. We had great family support at the national tournament in 2008 and we look forward to having that kind of support again and hopefully even better from the entire team. Our success is very dependent on the family support these young men receive each year. I know one thing for sure most of our guys wrestle better when their family is around. Even a phone call to see how they did helps them!"
Cumberland Wrestling Breaks into the Top Ten
(Chappa All-Academic)

The NWCA announced that Cumberland University wrestling program placed ninth on the NWCA All-Academic Team among top team GPA's in the NAIA. This is Cumberland's 4th appearance in the top ten in five years since 2003.  In 2003-2004 season the Bulldogs had four Academic Scholar Athletes which led the NAIA that year. The team cumulative gpa was 2.910 for the Cumberland, TN Bulldogs. Joshua Chappa became a member of the NWCA Individual Academic team for the Bulldogs finishing 12th out of 33 among top GPA's. He did so by becoming a national qualifier and achieving a gpa above 3.3. Chappa from Plainfield, WI has a 3.5 GPA and is a freshman majoring in Biology/Pre-Med for the Bulldogs.

Redshirt Junior, two-time NAIA Academic Scholar Athlete Kyle Knox led the way for the Bulldogs in 2007-2008 with a 3.51 GPA. In the past five years the Bulldogs have earned 10 NAIA Academic Scholar Athlete awards which requires the following: A 3.5 gpa on a 4.0 scale, junior or senior status academically, minimum of 12 of the institution's regularly scheduled matches. Knox was number nine and ten over the past two years.
Chappa Pins Down 3rd at Region to Lead Cumberland to a 6th Place Finish

Lebanon, TN- Cumberland scored 57 points for a 6th place finish at the NAIA east region. Freshman Joshua Chappa at 125 earned 16.5 team points to lead Cumberland. Chappa wrestled much of the season at 133 to help the team in dual meets. He earned a third place finish with all three of his wins coming by fall, taking his season record to 21-14. Chappa unseeded in the tournament pinned the #4 seed Caleb Myers from King College 5:23, PJ Martinez from the University of Cumberlands 1:16, and Tyler Savage from Notre Dame College 1:03. The Wisconsin native won the East region most falls in the least amount of time getting three pins in 7:43. He scored more team points than five east region champions. His three pins in the tournament take his season total to 15 and closed within three pins of the NAIA leader for 2008 Calvin Devault from Embry Riddle. He broke Cumberland University's season record of 10 pins previously a tie with former All-American Stephen Westbeld and last year's heavyweight Xavier Taylor.

Junior Jordan Powers at 184 was the only Bulldog finalist. Powers continues to prove he will contend for national honors. Unseeded in the tournament Powers defeated #4 seed Neil Kemp from Lindenwood University 6-1, #1 seed Tanner Wolk from McKendree University 7-5 and fell short of a regional championship losing to the #2 seed Rob Nuskabel from the University of the Cumberlands 9-7 in the finals. Powers had 12 team points on the day.

The Bulldogs had three more wrestlers' place 5th. Sophomore Kyle Studer at 197, freshman BJ Stewart at 285, and senior Theo Dotson at 141 all placed 5th. Studer led the way with 9.5 team points getting a 13-4 major decision over West Virginia Tech's Jamie Salisbury, and a fall in 6:54 over University of Cumberlands Travis Lovett. Stewart went 3-2 getting a fall in 4:12 over Joe Johnson from Missouri Baptist University, a 3-2 decision over Anthony Watson from Notre Dame College, and a 6-4 win in sudden victory over #4 seed Frankie Morgan from King College. Stewart also went the distance with defending national champion Lance Shunia from Lindenwood falling short with a 6-5 loss. Junior Eddie Sanchez at 149, Freshman David Wiese, and freshman Pat Banks all had a win. Wiese had a notable 5-4 loss to returning All-American and national runner-up David Clemens from Campbellsville that he lost in the last ten seconds of the match.

The Bulldogs wrestled eight in the regional tournament, submitting five medical waivers for junior Desean Willis at 125, freshman Mikey Davis at 141, freshman James Casadaban at 149, returning All-American sophomore Corey Bleaken at 157 and Junior Luke Borneman at 174. All five will have the opportunity to wrestle in the national tournament because they made the qualification standards within the 2007-2008 season. According to head coach Jarad Swint "we had 14 guys that made the national qualifying standards which is the most in the schools history. After regionals we know which 12 will go to nationals. For the guys that wrestled we did a nice job. It has been a struggle with the injuries but that is wrestling. We have to do what we can to get ready for nationals. I am looking forward to seeing if we can get some of these guys healthy enough to compete and represent all the hard work that they put into preparing themselves."

Head coach Jarad Swint said "We started off a little flat this weekend in our first match. In the second match we wrestled better but not our best. We are making good decisions at times. In the third match I thought we wrestled well we just needed a few more breaks here or there and we would have placed in the top eight. We lost 21-15 and had two one point matches that didn't go our way at 141 and 149. Had we won one of those two matches we would have tied and ended up moving on in the tournament because of the tiebreaker criteria. The nice thing about the weekend is that we actually got better in each match. People stepped up when they were needed to step up. The effort was there it's just the little mistakes we need to take care of to prepare ourselves better. We had a great weekend with the exception of possibly losing our captain and returning All-American Sophomore Corey Bleaken for the season."

The Bulldogs are at home this weekend for the second annual Cumberland University open. The tournament starts at 9am on Saturday. Last year's tournament included The University of Tennessee Chattanooga, UNC-Greensborough, Newberry College, King College, and Campbellsville University. It is expected to be a much bigger tournament this year.

Chattanooga, TN- The Cumberland University wrestling team faced the 19th and 8th ranked NCAA I teams in University of Tennessee Chattanooga and the Ohio State University this weekend. The Bulldogs only won four matches. UTC defeated Cumberland 42-3 and OSU defeated the Bulldogs 39-16. Head coach Jarad Swint said "We gained valuable experience facing this caliber of teams. It gives us an opportunity to see where we are stack up against some of the best in the nation. I think once we get everyone in the right weight class we will be looking pretty good. Five of the ten weight classes we wrestled were guys that wrestle or will most likely wrestle in a lower weight class." In the Ohio State match the Bulldogs were only down 16-17 with four weight classes remaining in the match. Swint said "We wrestled well against Ohio State considering we bumped so many guys up in weight classes. These were two great teams that really humbled us today."

Junior Theo Dotson went 3-2 bringing his overall record to 8-3 and sophomore Luke Borneman had a marathon weekend wrestling seven matches with a 5-2 record taking his overall record to 19-6.

Red shirt freshmen wrestling unattached, James Casadaban at 149 and David Wiese at 157 faired well. Casadaban and Wiese both went 3-2  for the weekend both ending their tournament runs in the round of 12. Freshman Ben Briscoe went 2-2 at 197 finishing in the round of eight. Kyle Knox at 157, Mike Barber at 165, and Kyle Studer at 184 all picked up a win on the weekend.

Head Coach Jarad Swint said "Our wrestling was a little disappointing this weekend overall. I blame myself for not preparing them well enough. We weren't mentally up for some matches and did not make adjustments soon enough within individual matches. We went in thinking we could place about 7 and only ended up with 3. But if you put things into perspective this is the best we have done at this tournament. We still don't like not performing well. Hopefully we will learn from this and get ourselves better prepared for our last three tournaments of the year. Next up for the Bulldogs is the Ed South Invitational on Saturday at Carson Newman College, then regionals in St. Charles Missouri, and nationals in Sioux City, Iowa

Magruder Gives $120000 for a Wrestling Facility

Ron Magruder Group President of an Ontario based company donated $60000 to help start construction of a Wrestling facility for Cumberland University. In 1997 Magruder also helped start the wrestling program. When he was the CEO of Cracker Barrel in Lebanon, he bought Cumberland University wrestling mats and started a $100000 endowment for the budget.

Magruder was a Conference champion in wrestling at Central high school in Wheaton, Illinois then entered business without attending college. Magruder joined General Mills in 1972 as part of the Red Lobster operating team and advanced rapidly through various management positions. In 1981, he was named vice president for International Growth and Development, responsible for the expansion of Red Lobster in Japan and Canada. He became president of Casa Gallardo Mexican Restaurants in 1982 and president of York Steakhouse a year later.

In 1987, Magruder was named executive vice president of General Mills Restaurants and president of The Olive Garden, and became senior vice president of General Mills two years later.

He was named Restaurant Operator of the Year in 1991, and received the Gold Chain Award that year and the Silver Plate Award in 1993. He is a frequent keynote speaker for hotel and restaurant conferences, and serves on business school advisory boards at three universities.

Magruder was general chairman of the United Negro College Fund Campaign in 1994, and chairman of Scouting for Food, a Boy Scouts of America project. He endowed a chair in restaurant management at the University of Central Florida. In 1994 Magruder was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum Stillwater, Oklahoma.

In August 2001 he was named Chief Executive of Hops Restaurant Bar and Brewery, after building Orlando, Olive Garden and the Lebanon, Cracker Barrel into nationally prominent brands. He then moved to Buffalo New York with his current company.

The Cumberland University Head Wrestling Coach Jarad Swint and his staff have a goal of building a wrestling facility within Swint,s first three years at Cumberland University. In July he will have been employed at Cumberland University for two years. In the past two years the coaching staff at Cumberland University has produced the schools first individual national champion, three All-Americans and six Academic All-Americans. Today Cumberland University received a check for $60000. This contribution is half of a two year commitment of $120000 from Magruder.

Cumberland University is now looking to get another $80000 to $100000 to complete the project. "We are looking at building a facility that would be close to 10000 square feet to include a wrestling room, locker room, weight room, aerobic machines, laundry room, and coach,s offices. The facility would enable us to have our home duals inside of the building. The donation from Ron should get the building erected and another $80000 to $100000 would enable us to complete the project. "I cannot thank Ron enough for his continued support of this program. Last year Swint named the outstanding wrestler award "the Ron Magruder Award. "Ron is definitely an outstanding individual and deserves more than just an award named after him for his contribution to this wrestling program. I think the first time I meet him in person I will have to give him a great big bear hug. He has helped make our dream of building a wrestling facility a reality. Again, I can,t thank him enough.

Jarad Swint begins his inaugural season at Cumberland

Jarad Swint begins his inaugural season as the head coach of the Bulldog wrestling program. Before arriving at Cumberland, he was a Student Assistant Coach at the University of Findlay, Ohio in 1995.
