Dana College Wrestlers Volunteer at Annual Sale

Memorial Community Hospital and Health System in Blair is now several steps closer to purchasing new cardiopulmonary equipment for patients, thanks to efforts by volunteers at the 49th Annual MCH Auxiliary Rummage Sale. Thousands of shoppers came to the sale, held Sept. 14 -17 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Arlington.

The goal of raising $50,000 was exceeded by almost $57,000 in gross sales, according to Ardis Grace, publicity chairperson for the rummage sale. The event attracted people from throughout the region and from at least eight different states.
Grace said volunteers are the heart of this annual event. "We're still gathering figures, but we know we had more than 400 volunteers assisting with the sale this year. They came from throughout the community, including the Dana College athletes who help set up and tear down for the event. These athletes supply the much needed muscle it takes to organize such a huge event."
Grace said that throughout the years of hosting the rummage sale, Dana College athletes have been a huge part of its success. "They always help out when needed, and they seem to have a good time doing it,' Grace said. "The older volunteers are entertained at their antics and so appreciative of the hard work they put in every year."

According to Grace, the Dana College wrestling, soccer, cheer and dance, basketball and football teams all assisted with some aspect of this year's sale.
Dana College Head Wrestling Coach Richard Fergola said it is important for his wrestlers to support community efforts. "It's good for our team to get out in the community and help people out," Fergola said. "The rummage sale is such a great event for the team to support because proceeds benefit the entire community. We have a great group of young men who are willing and able to assist."

A native Nebraskan, Abariotes is a Dana College Athletic Hall of Fame member, a 2003 inductee into the Dana College Wrestling Hall of Fame and a member of the Nebraska Wrestling Hall of Fame.åÊ Abariotes graduated from Dana in 1965.

‰¥þI am very excited to have these great people on my staff,‰¥ÿ said Head Coach Richard Fergola.åÊ They bring experience, work ethic, and loyality to this program.åÊ A head coach couldn‰¥út wish for a better staff.åÊ These guys were great wrestlers and will make outstanding coaches‰¥ÿ.åÊ

Incoming Recruits Prepare for Final Fargo Stage

Blair, NE-For some wrestlers across the country, the summer time is a relaxation time, a long rest away from the mat. But for others, the summer is no different than the winter and in some cases, more competitive. For three Dana College incoming freshman, their summer has been a very busy and competitive one.

During the summer, there are two major competitions at the Junior Level, the Junior National Duals and the Junior Nationals. This year, the Junior Duals were held on the campus of Oklahoma City University, a new program to the NAIA and an opponent of Dana College in 2006-07. Junior Nationals is held, as always in Fargo, ND in the Fargo Dome on the campus of North Dakota State University.åÊ

For Donny Altman (Derby, KS), Eric Graham (Kansas City, MO), and Brian Graham (Kansas City, MO), these two competitions have always been a big part of their summers. These three young men will all be freshman next month as they arrive on the campus of Dana College to prepare for their inaugural college wrestling season. Highly recruited, these three athletes are all ranked in the top 20 in the country in their respective weight classes and are no strangers to competing a high level.

To help prepare for Junior Duals and Junior Nationals, these athletes traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO with their future Head Coach, Richard Fergola of Dana College. The future Vikings spent a week training with some of the best Juniors in the country as well as many of the University World Team members and the OTC coaching staff. "This training experience will definitely help prepare these guys for Fargo as well as what lies ahead for them in college," said Head Coach Richard Fergola.åÊ

Junior Duals was held June 28-July 2. Brian and Eric Graham of Park Hill High School in Kansas City, MO are no strangers to team success. They have been on two state championship teams at Park Hill High School, but this was no state tournament. In Greco-Roman competition, Team Missouri claimed the national title by defeating Illinois 33-28. The Graham's were competing up a weight class than they normally do and didn't see action in every dual. In the finals against Illinois, Brian Graham secured a close victory over Illinois's Volodymyr Rozdolsky Dec 0-3,3-1,4-2. Both Grahams were major contributors to the national championship for Team Missouri. Eric Graham finished the Greco-Roman competition with a 3-0 record while brother Brian went 5-1.åÊ

Altman, competing for Team Kansas was unable to bring home a team trophy, but was able to complete the competition with a 12-2 overall individual record in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle at 119 lbs which is a strong showing heading into Fargo.åÊ

Junior Nationals is only a week away and these three future Viking wrestlers will be departing for their state's respective team camps. All three wrestlers have experienced much success in Fargo with Eric Graham placing twice, Brian Graham placing three times and Altman has placed five times with two of them being national titles. This trip to Fargo will be their final stage at the junior level before they begin their college wrestling careers at Dana College.åÊ

Dana College Releases 2006-07 Schedule
(see attachment for schedule)

Blair, NE-New Dana College head coach Richard Fergola, who has been the Head Assistant Coach for the Vikings the past two seasons and helped lead the Vikings to the 2006 NAIA National Duals title as well as the 2006 NAIA National Championship announced the Viking's 2006-07 schedule today. Fergola will begin his third season with the Viking wrestling program and first year at the helm.

The 2005-06 Vikings finished the season 18-1-1 in dual matches and a first place finish at National Duals, the GPAC Conference, Central Regionals and the NAIA National tournament. The Vikings lone loss was to Cal Poly who at that time was ranked No. 18 in the Division 1 rankings. The single tie was to Oregon State who was ranked third in the PAC 10 and eventually beat Cal Poly a week later in dual action.

In 2006-07, the Vikings have 10 duals scheduled, not including the National Duals where they will try to defend their 2006 crown. The Vikings will vie for their fifth GPAC championship and region title as well as another national championship.

Dana College will begin the season as always at the Daktronics Open at South Dakota State University on November 4th. In the past, the Vikings have traveled to the always tough Central Missouri State Open in Warrensburg, but this year have added the Harold Nichols Open in Ft. Dodge, IA to the schedule in it's place on November 11th.

The Viking's dual season will begin at home in the Gardner-Hawks Center on November 17th when the Stars of Oklahoma City and Northwestern College come to town for a double dual. Oklahoma City is in its first season in the NAIA and will be a good test for the defending national champs.

Following the double dual, the Vikings will go in their own backyard and attend one of the nation's most premiere opens, the Kaufman-Brand Open at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on November 18th. The Kaufman-Brand Open features almost every top Division I team in the country with two age divisions, 21 & over and 20 & under.åÊ

In December, the Vikings will start out the month at the Simpson Invitational in Indianola, IA on December 2nd. This tournament will feature some of Division II and III's top teams. Then, on December 8th, the Vikings will travel to Sioux Falls, SD to take on another new team to the NAIA, the University of Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls is a GPAC and North Central Region member as well. Following the Sioux Falls dual will be the University of Nebraska-Kearney Loper Open on December 9th.

Ending out December will be two more GPAC and North Central region foes both out of Sioux City, IA. Coming to Gardner-Hawks Center on December 15th will be Briar Cliff University and on Saturday December 16th are the Morningside Mustangs.åÊ

The Vikings will start out the new year by playing host to the annual Dana College Open on January 6th. The Dana Open is also Parent's Day for all Dana College wrestlers. Following the Dana Open, the Vikings will travel to Cedar Falls, IA for the NWCA/NAIA Cliff Keen National Duals on January 13-14th. In 2006, the Vikings were the third seed among 16 of the top NAIA schools and walked away with the school's first ever national championship by defeating the University of Cumberlands 22-13 in the final.åÊ

After the National Duals, the Vikings will host Division II Northern State University in Gardner-Hawks Center on January 17th. On January 20th, the Vikings will travel to Orange City, IA where they will compete in the annual Northwestern College Red Raider Invitational. The Vikings have claimed the championship here the past two seasons most recently defeating 9-time Division III national champion, Augsburg College.åÊ

To finish out the month of January, the Vikings will host the two biggest duals of the season. Highlighting the 2006-07 schedule will be on January 27th in the Gardner-Hawks Center when the NAIA National Champions, Dana College, will host the 3-time NCAA Division II National Champion, the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Following the dual with UNO, the Vikings will host Augustana College four days later on January 31st. Augustana finished 7th in 2006 and 2nd in 2005 in NCAA Division II. In 2006, Dana defeated Augustana in Sioux Falls 20-17.åÊ

February will begin with the Vikings finishing out their dual season with Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD on February 2nd and Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO on February 7th. Dana College defeated Missouri Valley twice in 2006.åÊ

The Vikings will be looking to claim their fifth consecutive GPAC Conference championship in Mitchell, SD on February 10th at Dakota Wesleyan University. The 2006 Vikings claimed eight individual champions.åÊ

The NAIA regions were realigned and the Vikings are now part of the North Central region comprised of Briar Cliff University, Dakota Wesleyan University, Dickinson State, Northwestern College, University of Sioux Falls, Morningside College, and Jamestown College. The Vikings will travel to Dickinson State in Dickinson, ND on Saturday February 17th to look for their fifth region title.åÊ

The Vikings will close out their 2006-07 campaign with the 50th Annual NAIA National Championships at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, IA on March 2-3.

Vikings Add to Recruiting Class

Blair, NE-The 2006 NAIA National Champions, Dana College, inked four more star athletes to their incoming recruiting class. These four athletes will be added to the class of five that have already signed earlier in the season, bringing the Viking total to nine.

Headlining the most recent signees is 4X Alabama state champion, Forrest Millsap. A standout wrestler for Homewood High School in Birmingham, AL, Millsap claimed four state titles and a Brute Nationals title in his four years at Homewood. Millsap is currently ranked No. 14 in the country by Wrestling USA magazine and is among Intermat's Top 150 recruits. Millsap will compete for the Vikings at 149 and will major in Art.

Also making the trip to the Midwest from the south is Lumpkin County's Josh Ghobadpoor. Ghobadpoor was a four-time state finalist, placing 2nd, 1st, 2nd, and 2nd. Ghobadpoor is ranked Honorable Mention by Wrestling USA magazine and will compete for the Vikings at 174.

Joining Millsap and Ghobadpoor are Jordan Davis and Clayton Wurtele. Davis was a state qualifier from Blaine, MN. Davis will compete at 174 and major in Pre-Med. Wurtele comes to Dana from local Nebraska City, NE where he was a state qualifier. Wurtele will major in Criminal Justice and sports a 4.0 G.P.A and will compete at either 141 or 149.

These four young men join Donny Altman, Brian Graham, Eric Graham, John Schmalz, and Micah Laufenberg on Dana's incoming recruiting class. The Vikings claimed the No. 1 Non-Division I recruiting class in 2005 as ranked by Wrestling USA magazine.

Viking Signees and Marquardt Perform at Regional and National Events

Blair, NE-- Three of Dana's signees as well as current Viking senior Marshall Marquardt competed in some prestigious regional and national events this past weekend and performed well. Donny Altman (Derby, KS), Eric Graham (Kansas City, MO), and Brian Graham (Kansas City, MO) all competed in the Southern Plains Junior Regional held in Hutchinson, KS. The Southern Plains is one of a handful of regionals held across the country that are used as qualifiers for the Cadet/Junior Nationals held in Fargo, ND. The Southern Plains is considered one of the toughest regions in the country and draws some of the nation's best Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers from across the country.

Donny Altman, who will compete for the Vikings starting in the fall of 2006 at 125 pounds, brought home double gold by claiming the titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at 119 lbs. Altman is a 2x Kansas state finalist, winning the title in 2005. Altman is extremely accomplished on the freestyle and Greco-Roman circuit claiming 2 Cadet National titles and 5 All-American showings in Fargo.

Brian and Eric Graham are coming to Dana College via powerhouse Park Hill High School in Kansas City, MO. Both wrestlers bumped up a couple weight classes for this regional, but still managed to place. Normally competing at 140, Eric Graham bumped up to 145 pounds and place 6th in freestyle. Brother Brian, who normally competes at 145, bumped up to 152 and claimed the bronze medal in freestyle. Brian and Eric have both claimed two Missouri state titles as well multiple All-American honors in Fargo.

Current Viking senior, Marshall Marquardt, fresh off claiming his first ever NAIA All-American status to help the Dana Vikings claim their first ever national title, added another All-American plaque to his resume. Competing in the prestigious University National Championships held on the campus of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, Marquardt claimed 6th place in the 96 kg (211.5 lbs) weight class in Greco-Roman. Marquardt, who placed 7th in the NAIA this season at 174 lbs, was wrestling up in weight considerably, but still was able to compete and become an All-American. By receiving All-American status at Universities, Marquardt has officially qualified for the University World Team Trials to be held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Winners of the University World Team Trials will represent the United States at the University World Championships in Mongolia June 14-21.

The 2005-06 Top 10 Greatest Moments in Dana College Wrestling

The Viking wrestling team capped off an outstanding 2005-06 season with a pair of national titles, along with the school's first ever NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, IA. Dana Wrestling takes a look back on the top 10 moments of the past season. The season was too memorable for just 10 moments, but we narrowed it down to the real good stuff.

10. The "Lights" get turned off
In early December, the Viking wrestling team traveled to Las Vegas, NV for the Cliff Keen Invitational to take on 45 of the top programs in the country, most of which were Division I. However, before they would tackle that large task, they would have to get over another hump first. In the history of Dana College wrestling, the Vikings have NEVER claimed a victory over Montana State-Northern. The Lights have been a dominant program in the NAIA winning six national team titles. Heading into this dual, lingered the history of defeats the Vikings have been provided by the Lights of Montana. Under new Head Coach Dan Troupe, the Lights would also learn something newthat what comes around goes around. The Vikings never trailed in the dual claiming 8 out of 10 matches for a 35-9 rout of the once unbeatable team for the first time in the 46 years of Dana College wrestling! Six Dana wrestlers recorded victories by bonus points with two of them coming by fall.

9. Turning the Corner
With the Christmas Break right around the corner, the Vikings still were not sure how good they were until they traveled to Lincoln, NE for the annual Husker Duals. Dana College is the only small school that competes in this day of duals among some of the nations best Division I teams. This year included duals against Cal Poly and Oregon State. Both teams hail from the PAC 10 conference with Cal Poly ranking in at No. 20 in the polls at the time of the dual. Oregon State was ranked No. 3 in the PAC 10 behind Cal Poly and Arizona State. The Vikings started out the day with a dual against Cal Poly and things were looking bleak as Cal Poly defeated Dana by a score of 41-3. However, the Vikings didn't lay down for the Beavers of Oregon State. While any other team may give up, quit and call it a day and pack up and head home for Christmas, the Vikings had other plans. The Vikings split victories with the Beavers five to five, but recorded some key major decisions. Freshman Sonny Silva (Kimberly, Idaho) would make his varsity debut at 133 and made a lasting impression. Silva was winning his bout 5-0, but needed to score a major decision to give the Vikings another bonus point to help win the dual. In the final seconds of the match, the freshman managed to turn his opponent and receive three near fall points and the 8-0 major decision. The win by Silva put the Vikings within three, 20-17, with one match to go. The dual depended on senior and two-time All-American, Jason Lozier (Omaha, Neb). In an exciting match, Lozier was losing 2-1 with about two seconds remaining and managed a reversal with no time on the clock to pull out a 3-2 victory over Kyle Larson and the 20-20 tie! This day would mark the only loss and only tie that Dana would have on its record for the remainder of the season.

8. Sending a Message
The Dana College wrestling program made history this year by claiming Dana's first ever team national championship by defeating the University of Cumberlands in the NAIA National Duals finals in the UNI-Dome. With a capacity crowd of close to 8,000 spectators, Dana defeated the #6 ranked Cumberlands 22-13 which handed the Dana program and head Coach Steve Costanzo their first national title. The Vikings finished 4-0 in the competition with dual wins over Montana State-Northern, Southern Oregon, Missouri Valley College and University of Cumberlands. The Vikings were ranked No. 4 nationally heading into the competition and received the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Dana had four major individual victories that helped boost them to the title. In the Southern Oregon dual, Ben Henderson (157) was bumped up to 165 to do battle with No. 1 ranked Jimmy Grochowsky. Henderson was up for the challenge, walking away with a 3-2 victory. That defeat only motivated the remaining Dana wrestlers as Dana only dropped one match to SOU. The second key victory came in the semi-finals against Missouri Valley. Trailing 12-9 to Missouri Valley heading into the 184 pound match, Dana needed a pin out of Willie Parks. Parks being the takedown artist that he is, pins are not common with his style. The senior came through for his team recording a fall that would propel Dana to a 19-15 victory and into the National Duals finals. The other two key wins both came in the finals. Starting off the dual was junior Craig Trampe at 125. Trampe was taking on the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country, Delrico Choates of The Cumberlands. In a last second flurry, Trampe was victorious 3-2 and got the Vikings off to a great start. The final key win was at 174 with senior Marshall Marquardt. With the dual scored tied 9-9, Marquardt hit a monster head-lock on Todd Allen and recorded a fall to put Dana up 15-9. The Vikings won two of the last three matches to win National Duals 22-13 over The Cumberlands.
"This was a real team effort. When one guy was down, another picked it up. Everything fell into place for us," said Coach Costanzo. "This is a huge step for our program and our school."

7. Two Wins are Better than One!
There are only a few teams that Dana College has not beaten in the past and the Vikings took care of both of them in 2005-06. Not only did the Vikings defeat MSU-N twice this season, but shared the same defeats with Missouri Valley College. In December of 2004, Dana College recorded their first ever dual win over Missouri Valley. Dana then followed up with the 19-15 victory at this year's National Duals. The Dana Vikings would then host Missouri Valley at home shortly after National Duals. The dual was highly promoted as "Pack the House Night". The rematch! In front of a capacity crowd, Dana College proceeded to dominate Missouri Valley and record another win over the always tough Missouri Valley Vikings 32-6, only losing two matches.

6. Taking Down Augsburg
While the Vikings were on a roll of taking down the "Giants" of college wrestling, they decided to add one more to the list. Winning the Northwestern Invite was nothing new to Dana College as they claimed the title in 2005 as well as owned the Outstanding Wrestler in Blair Alderman. In 2006, Dana College repeated their accomplishments from the previous year, but with an added perk. Dana claimed the 2006 title, Marshall Marquardt was named the tournament outstanding wrestler, but on their way to the team title, Dana took down one of NCAA Division III's monsters, Augsburg College. Augsburg has claimed 9 NCAA Division III championships and was fresh off the 2005 title. Augsburg also defeated Dana in 2005 in a dual. The tournament title was much more special in 2006. Dana had 10 place-winners, four finalist, and two champions!

5. Augustana Suffers
Dana College added another huge victory to their record with a win over Augustana S.D. Dana stunned the Augies by defeating NCAA Div. II No. 5 Augustana 20-17 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Augustana placed second in the NCAA Division II National Tournament in 2005 and is another team that Dana has never beaten. Dana got off to a strong start in the dual with Burke Barnes's (Lake Stevens, Wash) major decision at 125 pounds and a pin from Jimmy Rollins (Woodbury, N.J.) at 133 pounds. Willie Parks (Garden Grove, Calif.) also picked up bonus points for the Vikings with a major decision at 184 pounds. Bonus points were crucial as the Vikings won five of the ten matches. Scott Taylor (157 Arapahoe, Neb.) and Marshall Marquardt (174 Altoona, Iowa) also delivered Viking victories. Once again the dual came down to the final match. The Vikings put their confidence in Wade Jordan (Coulee City, Wash). Jordan lost his heavyweight match 5-0, but kept the score close enough to give Dana the dual victory. Dana completes their best dual season ever in history with an 18-1-1 record!

"This was an important win for us because it keeps our momentum going. I was real proud of the guys Friday night," said coach Steve Costanzo.

4. Total Domination!
At this point in the season, Dana was clicking on almost all cylinders. Heading into the GPAC Conference tournament, the Vikings were full strength with the exception of senior Marshall Marquardt at 174 and had claimed the No. 1 NAIA National ranking which was the first time ever. Dana claimed 8 titles out of 10 weights and scored 162 team points to out-distance second place Morningside by 89 points. The most dominant feature behind Dana's dominating GPAC performance was that the Vikings only lost one match in the whole tournament! Senior Blair Alderman was named the GPAC tournament outstanding wrestler. This was Dana's 4th GPAC title in a row.

3. History Repeats Itself!
After dominating the GPAC Conference, the Vikings started to focus on the post-season goals that they had set. Winning their 4th Central Region Title was towards the top of the list. This year's Central Region was held in the building next to the Tyson Events Center, the home to NAIA National Tournament. So the Vikings were primed and ready to start fulfilling their dreams! The Vikings would place all 12 wrestlers and win the Central Region with 197.5 points, eighty-five points ahead of second place William Penn. Leading the Vikings were five individual champions, Burke Barnes (125), Jimmy Rollins (133), Ben Henderson (157), Trent Leichleiter (165), and Blair Alderman (197). Head Coach Steve Costanzo was named Central Region Coach of the Year and the Vikings were setting the stage for the National Championship in Sioux City, IA.

2. The Dirty Dozen Rules!
12 All-Americans! 12 All-Americans! Can you believe it? Sometimes we still can't. This year may not have been the same had all 12 Viking wrestlers not placed at the national tournament. The fact that all 12 wrestlers placed in the top seven at nationals, is an accomplishment in itself. The 2005-06 Viking wrestling team was very special, because they became a family. For one member of this family to not reach his goal of becoming an All-American could have been detrimental to the team. One of the team goals heading into the 2006 national tournament was 12 All-Americans. Well, with this team, when they set a goal, they do everything they can to accomplish that goal and this one was no different. At one point in the tournament, Dana had locked in eleven All-Americans with one individual left to achieve that status. It all came down to senior captain, Marshall Marquardt at 174. Marshall had to face the same individual from Southern Oregon that defeated him two years prior in the same round and kept Marquardt from achieving All-American status. Well, not this time around! Marquardt made quick work of the SOU wrestler with an amazing foot-sweep to his back and finished him with a fall! It was a truly exciting moment!

1. Listening to "Queen" Sing!
We all dreamed of singing and listening to the sweet sound of "We are the Champions" by Queen, but could we really make that dream come true. We never really talked about it much and tried not to in order not to jinx ourselves. However, deep down inside, we knew we had the capabilities of getting the job done! We were ranked No. 1 in the country and had all of the tools necessary of bringing home the gold! Everyone knows that the national tournament is like a different season, a tournament like no other. Could the Vikings succumb to that kind of pressure? The strategy was all planned out and everyone knew what they needed to do in order for us to be the No. 1 team in the country once and for all. It played out like a script and all 12 Viking wrestlers played their part with 120% effort. Our goal was to get at least 7 or more wrestlers to the semi-finals, and we did that. We also wanted to get at least three individuals in the national finals, we did that. Jimmy Rollins and Willie Parks became Dana's first ever individual National Champions. Dana College only trailed once in the tournament and it was for like a moment. Head Coach Steve Costanzo was named National Coach of the Year, senior Willie Parks was named NWCA/NAIA Wrestler of the Year. One event that transpired that was not expected was the fashion in which we won the national championship. Honestly we thought it would be a dog-fight and would come down to the wire. Well, when this team competed the way that they did, national scoring records get broken. That is exactly what the Vikings did. Scoring 193 points and crushing the previous record of 180 points held by Lindenwood in 2002.

So, this season was truly an amazing one. One that no one affiliated with Dana College or Dana College wrestling will ever forget. Not only did we win the National Duals Championship and the NAIA National Tournament Championship, but we also led the country with the most Academic All-Americans for the second year in a row! From our perspective, the fact that this program led the country in academics as well as won the national championship, is a testament to the true commitment that the Dana College wrestling program has to its institution, academics and athletics. These young men will live forever in the history of Dana College and the college wrestling fans of America!

Dana Wins NAIA Championship

Dana College has the best wrestling team in the nation. The Vikings won the 2006 NAIA National Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa. All twelve Dana wrestlers placed in the tournament, giving Dana 12 All-Americans and an NAIA tournament record 193 team points (previous record 180 points Lindenwood 2002). Lindenwood was the runner-up with 164 points.

The national championship is the first ever NAIA team championship for any Dana College team.

Two Vikings also claimed individual titles. Jimmy Rollins (133 Woodbury, N.J.) won the national title over Kyle Jahn of McKendree College by injury default. Willie Parks (SR Garden Grove, Calif.) defeated Rick Story of Southern Oregon 16-8 for the national championship at 184 pounds. They are the first ever Dana College individual wrestling national champions.

Parks was honored with the NWCA-NAIA Outstanding Wrestler-of-the-Year award.

Dana coach Steve Costanzo who recruited the No. 1 non-Division I recruiting class in the nation this year, then coached the team to the NWCA National Duals championship, a school record 17 dual wins, and the NAIA National Championship was named 2006 NAIA Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Anthony Haukenberry (Buckley, Wash.) was the national runner-up at 149 pounds. Brad Cooper of the University of the Cumberlands defeated Haukenberry in the finals 3-2.

A strong start in the tournament gave Dana the edge. Dana won all but 2 of their first 15 matches to put ten of twelve wrestlers in the championship bracket.

Scott Taylor's (Arapahoe, Neb.) mild upset in the 157-pound quarterfinal jumpstarted the Vikings during Friday night's second session. With that victory, Taylor, a senior and returning national-qualifier, achieved All-American status for the first time.

Just like Taylor, Trent Leichleiter (Harvard, Neb.) was a senior and returning national qualifier. Leichleiter's 165-pound quarterfinal match began just as Taylor's match ended. Hyped from Taylor's victory, a sea of red-clothed Dana fans cheered "Trent, Trent, Trent" as Leichleiter pulled out a 1-point escape in overtime to win the match. Leichleiter fell to his knees then jumped up and hugged Coach Steve Costanzo in celebration- he had earned the title 'All-American' for the first time.

By the end of day one, seven Vikings remained undefeated, none were eliminated.

Saturday morning the Vikings scored 6 more falls in the semifinals.

Burke Barnes (Lake Stevens, Wash.) scored two of the falls on his way to third place at 125 pounds.

Terrence Almond also scored two falls. Almond wrestled Gordo Villaescusa of Embry Riddle in the third place match. Villaescusa pulled out an 11-10 victory in the final seconds giving Dana's Almond fourth place.

The other two pins were recorded by Parks, who advanced to the finals, and Leichleiter at 165 pounds. Leichlieter pinned Southern Oregan's James Mannenbach in 3:59 and finished 4th in the tournament.

Dana's other placers were: Craig Trampe (125 Ord, Neb.) 7th, Jason Lozier (141 Omaha, Neb.) 6th, Taylor 4th, Ben Henderson (Federal Way, Wash.) 5th, Marshall Marquardt (174 Altoona, Iowa) 7th and Blair Alderman (197 Spokane, Wash.) 4th.

Dana emerged from Saturday's morning session with enough points to clinch the national championship. No team would be able to catch the Vikings no matter what happened in the finals.

With or without the National Championship the Dana wrestlers are successful. The title, however, could not have gone to a more deserving group of young men.

Dana Downs NCAA Powerhouse, Augustana

Sioux Falls, SD-The Dana College Vikings jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two matches and then hung on to edge Augustana 20-17 wrestling victory in a battle of the Vikings Friday night at the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana College.

Dana Completes Big Weekend

Fresh off winning the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, the Dana College Vikings faced another weekend of intense wrestling. Dana hosted No. 7 Missouri Valley Friday night and then traveled to Northwestern College for the Red Raider Invitational on Saturday

Missouri Valley came to Gardner Hawks Center almost exactly one week after they squared off with Dana in the semi-finals of the national duals. Dana won that dual by a score of 19-15 to advance to the finals.  Friday night's dual was highly anticipated and with a capacity crowd for the annual "Pack the House Night", the 2006 National Duals Champions once again defeated Missouri Valley, but this time by a run-away score of 32-6. Dana only dropped two matches to Missouri Valley.

Senior Trent Leichleiter (Harvard, Neb.) avenged his only loss at the national duals by defeating Chad Jennings by a score of 10-4.

Craig Trampe, Willie Parks and Blair Alderman scored bonus points for the Vikings. Alderman was the only wrestler with a pin in the dual. Trampe and Parks both won by major decision.

At 133 pounds Dana's Sonny Silva (Kimberly, Idaho) scored a key victory 8-7 over Mo Valley's Garrett Harding.

Scott Taylor took MVC's No. 1 ranked Darion Terry into overtime. Terry scored a takedown in sudden death to defeat Taylor 5-3 at 157 pounds.

With the win over Missouri Valley, Dana has improved their record to 11-1-1 which ties the school record for most wins in a season. The Vikings still have six duals left which gives this year's squad a chance to set more records.

After defeating Missouri Valley for the second time this season, Coach Costanzo and the Vikings traveled to Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa for the annual Red Raider Invitational. The Vikings are the defending champions of the invitational, but had a tall order in front of them. Standing in their way would be the nine-time and defending NCAA Division III National Champions, Augsburg College. Augsburg, ranked No. 2 in Division III and fresh off a runner-up finish at the Division III National Duals came to wrestle. The Auggies defeated Dana in 2005 in a dual by winning 9 of 10 matches. This would be Dana's day though as Augsburg finished the tournament in second place behind Dana by a team score of 162 to 146.5.

Viking wrestlers Marshall Marquardt (Altoona, Iowa) and Willie Parks (Garden Grove, Calif.) won championships Saturday.. Marquardt won five straight matches, including 2 pins, to claim the title at 174 pounds. He was also named the tournament's outstanding wrestler. Parks recorded a tech-fall and three major decisions on his way to the championship at 184 pounds.

Craig Trampe (Ord, Neb.) was the runner-up at 125 pounds. Trampe pinned a Buena Vista wrestler in the semi-finals, but lost 8-2 to Seth Flodeen of Augsburg in the finals. Dana's Terrence Almond (Pelham, Ga.) was also a runner-up. Almond picked up two pins on his way to the finals at 141 pounds. Almond lost 6-5 to Bacone's Bryan Odle in the championship match.

Four Vikings took third place in the meet: Jason Lozier (149 Omaha, Neb.), Scott Taylor (157 Arapahoe, Neb.), Trent Leichleiter (165 Harvard, Neb.), and Blair Alderman (197 Spokane, Wash.). Placing fifth was Kyle Frawley (174 Buckley, WA) and Wade Jordan (285 Coulee City, WA).

While the Viking varsity was competing at Northwestern, twenty-four other Viking wrestlers were competing at the annual University of Nebraska-Omaha Open (2). Four Vikings placed in the annual open with three individuals making the finals. Burke Barnes (125 Lake Stevens, Wash.), Jimmy Rollins (133 Woodbury, NJ), and Ryan Tuzon (165 Wailuku, Hawaii). Barnes finished second while Rollins and Tuzon both claimed titles. Brett Brandl (133 Madison, Neb.) finished in fourth place.

The Vikings have completed tournament action until the GPAC tournament.  The Vikings have a string of six dual meets over the next couple of weeks highlighted by a dual with Division II Northern State University and Augustana.

Dana Wins National Championship Parks Awarded Outstanding Wrestler

The Dana College wrestling program made history this weekend by claiming Dana's first ever team national championship by defeating the University of Cumberlands in the NAIA National Duals finals in the UNI-Dome.

Dana narrowly defeated Missouri Valley College in the semifinal round. After losing three straight matches the Vikings needed bonus points to win the dual. Willie Parks (Garden Grove, Calif) delivered a pin in the 184-pound match in 3:41. Blair Alderman (Spokane, Wash.) followed up at 197-pounds with a major decision to secure the dual victory for Dana 19-15 over Mo Valley.

Then in the finals, Cumberlands took a significant lead with three straight victories in the lower weights. But Ben Henderson (Federal Way, Wash.) turned the tides for Dana with a win at 157 pounds. Trent Leichleiter (Harvard, Neb.) followed with a win at 165 pounds to bring the team score to 10-9. Dana trailed by just one point until Marshall Marquardt (Altoona, Iowa) pinned his opponent at 174 pounds. Fans were looking for Parks at 184, but Nick Wilkes (Onamia, Minn.) took the mat for Dana and picked up more points for the Vikings with a 9-1 major decision. Parks stepped in at 197 pounds, but lost a close match in which he had a 13-pound disadvantage. Alderman handled the heavyweight match for Dana and again secured the dual victory with a 5-3 win in the match.

Craig Trampe (125 Ord, Neb.), Marquardt (174) and Alderman (197) won all four of their matches in the dual tournament. Trampe, unranked among the nation's best 125 pound wrestlers, defeated No. 1 ranked Delrico Choates in the finals by a score of 3-2. Marquardt, also unranked in his weight class, defeated No. 2 ranked David O'Brien of Southern Oregon 15-10 and scored the key fall in the finals over Todd Allen of Cumberlands to put the Vikings in the lead. Alderman, currently ranked No. 6, finished 4-0 in dominating fashion, highlighted by a key major decision against Missouri Valley in the semi-finals to clinch the victory. Alderman also bumped up to heavyweight in the finals and won by a score of 5-2 over Cumberlands' Matt Bishop 5-3.

Willie Parks (184) was voted the Outstanding Wrestler for the NAIA division. Parks, the NAIA No. 1 ranked wrestler recorded an important fall in the semi-finals against Josh Johnston of Missouri Valley to help Dana College to a semi-finals victory and launched the team into the national finals.

"This was a real team effort. When one guy was down, another picked it up. Everything fell into place for us," said Coach Costanzo. "This is a huge step for our program and our school."

The Vikings dual record is now 10-1-1. Dana will host Missouri Valley College Friday night in Blair for the annual "Pack the House Night" at 6 pm. The Vikings will then travel to Northwestern College on Saturday to compete in the annual Northwestern Invitational.

Vikings Get "Tied" Up

Junior Craig Trampe looks for fall against No. 10 ranked Chad Mendes of Cal Poly. Trampe lost 13-8.

The NAIA No. 3-ranked Dana College Vikings faced some stiff Division I competition on Saturday at the annual Nebraska Duals held at the NU Coliseum on the University of Nebraska campus. The Vikings faced NCAA No. 23-ranked Cal Poly (1st in PAC 10) in the first dual and then followed up with a showdown with Oregon State, who is currently No. 3 in the PAC-10 standings behind Cal Poly and Arizona State.

Cal Poly was too much for the Vikings, defeating Dana by a score of 41-3, with the lone victory coming from senior Ben Henderson (Federal Way, Wash.), winning a decision at 157 over Ryan Williams, 8-6. Cal Poly followed the defeat over Dana, by pulling an upset over the No. 11 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, 21-19.

Dana Head Coach Steve Costanzo regrouped the Vikings in order to put up a good showing against the Beavers of Oregon State. Oregon State was 2-0 coming into Saturday with dual wins over Hofstra (ranked No. 22) and in-state rival, Oregon. Dana College has never defeated a Division I opponent in dual competition. The Vikings won five of ten matches and managed a 20-20 tie with the Beavers.

Junior George Roath (Kansas City, KS) started out the dual at 149. Roath dropped a major decision to Orlando Perez, 13-2. Senior Ben Henderson (Federal Way, Wash.) would get the Vikings back on track by receiving a forfeit from the Beavers at 157.

Senior Trent Leichleiter (Harvard, Neb.) kept the streak alive with an 8-4 decision over Anthony Weber. Senior Marshall Marquardt (Altoona, Iowa), who was undefeated in dual competition this year, lost his second match of the day to Jeremy Larson by major decision.

Senior Willie Parks (Garden Grove, Calif.) bounced back from a loss against Cal Poly to rack up a 13-5 major decision over Neal Beaudry. Senior Blair Alderman (Spokane, Wash.) faced two tough opponents on the day, facing the No. 9 ranked Montero from Cal Poly and then No. 20 ranked Dan Pitsch from Oregon State. Pitsch claimed an 8-3 decision over Alderman.

At heavyweight, No. 18 ranked Ty Watterson won by fall over Armando Montoya (Las Vegas, N.M.).

At 125, junior Craig Trampe (Ord, Neb.) scored in the final seconds of the match against Eric Stevenson to avoid the major decision and only giving up three team points, losing 11-4.

The Vikings will be in action on Jan. 6 at home against Dakota Wesleyan and then will host the Dana Open on Saturday. Jan. 7.

The Vikings travel to Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday, December 15 for a dual with Briar Cliff. Saturday Dana will compete at the Husker Duals hosted by the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

Dana Storms Simpson

With the blustering winds and snowfall, the weather conditions outside were cold and miserable. It was not much better inside the Gardner-Hawks Center in Blair for the other "Storm" in town.

The No. 2 ranked Dana College Vikings rolled to a 37-6 win over NCAA Div III's Simpson College Storm. The Vikings won 9 of 10 matches to claim their second victory in a row over Simpson. The Vikings defeated the Storm for the first time last season.

Junior Craig Trampe (Ord, Neb.) got the bad weather started at 125 pounds with an 8-0 major decision over Tony Hager.

Junior Shawn Tsutsumi (Kaneohe, Hawaii) followed with a 7-0 decision over Brooke Irlmeier at 133 pounds.

Senior and two-time All-American Jason Lozier (Omaha, Neb.) claimed an 8-5 victory over Cole Christensen.

Junior and two-time All-American Terrence Almond (Pelham, Ga.) picked up bonus points for the Vikings by recording a fall over Ben Hektoen in fifty three seconds.

Senior and 2005 All-American Ben Henderson (Federal Way, Wash.) revenged a previous loss in 2004 to Kellen Delaney, by defeating him 3-1.

Senior and two-time Academic All-American Trent Leichleiter (Harvard, Neb.) dominated the match in the riding position to score a 5-2 victory at 165 pounds.

Senior and 2005 Academic All-American Marshall Marquardt (Altoona, Iowa) defeated No. 7 ranked Cody Downing by fall at 1:56.

Willie Parks (Garden Grove, Calif.) dominated Matt Jorgenson with massive leg attacks and recorded a technical fall, 19-4.

Senior and three-time All-American Blair Alderman's (Spokane, Wash) awesome display of takedowns made quick work of Chris Downing. Alderman recorded a technical fall, 23-7.

Dana's only loss was at heavyweight. Redshirt-freshman, Zach Loberg (North Bend, Neb.) stepped in at heavyweight despite competing at 197 this year. Loberg lost by fall to two-time NCAA Division III All-American and No. 5 ranked, Brent Christensen.

The Dana College Vikings are now 4-0 in dual competition and will be competing at the University of Kearney Open on Saturday.

Viking Wrestling Club Crowns National Champion

Chicago, IL--Jacob Marquardt just won the University Greco-Roman National title yesterday in Chicago, IL. Jacob and Marshall Marquardt (Viking WC) out of Dana College in Blair, NE competed at the prestigous University National Championships at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL on Thursday April 14th. Marshall and Jacob both are Dana College wrestlers, but also compete for the Viking Wrestling Club which is a club that helps train Dana College wrestlers for National, International and World level competition.

The University National Championships are put on by USA Wrestling and FILA which are the two key governing bodies of National and International wrestling. The Universities are comprised of many of the nation's top college age wrestlers born from 1981-1987. Many of the top Division I and other college wrestlers travel to the windy city to compete for a national championship.

Both Jacob and Marshall competed in Greco-Roman. Marshall, who is the starting 174 pounder for Dana College, went 1-2 on the day competing at 84 kg (185 lbs), but competed very well, losing to the eventual runner-up, Aaron Boone from the United States Olympic Education Center 3-2, 2-0. Jacob Marquardt (120 kg, 264.5 lbs), had a very successful day by winning a national championship! Jacob went 3-0 on the day with three falls, which included a come back victory from a 3-0 deficit in the first period to pin unattached Dustin Fox at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in the gold-medal bout.

The University National Championships qualify wrestlers for the University World Team Trials to be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 22-29. Champions from this tournament will receive an automatic bid into a best-of-three championship series to determine this year's University World Team representative at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, August 1-7. As of right now, the Viking Wrestling Club will be sending two representatives to Colorado Springs for the World Team Trials. Jacob Marquardt and Bryan Scambler will compete for their spot on the World Team. Scambler will be competing for the JR FILA World Team and Marquardt will be competing for the University World Team.

Dana College takes fifth at Nationals

BLAIR, NEB. - The Dana College wrestling team placed fifth at the NAIA National Wrestling Tournament held in Sioux City, Iowa, on Friday and Saturday. This is the best team finish in Dana wrestling history.

Viking Leister Bowling (Allenspark, Colo.) took second place at 165 pounds. Four other Vikings achieved All-American status by placing in the top eight: Jimmy Rollins (Woodbury, N.J.) at third place at 133 pounds, Terrence Almond (Pelham, Ga.) at eighth place in 141 pounds, Ben Henderson (Federal Way, Wash.) at fifth place in 157 pounds, and Blair Alderman (Spokane, Wash.) at sixth place in 184 pounds.

Out of a total 15 All-America Scholar Athletes, three were from Dana, which was the most of any school. Wrestlers Trent Leichleiter (Harvard, Neb.), Marshall Marquardt (Altoona, Iowa), and Scott Taylor (Arapahoe, Neb.) were honored as 2005 All-America Scholar Athletes.

The first pin of 2005 tournament action went to Dana wrestler Craig Trampe (Ord, Neb.) at 125 pounds. After a back-flip escape, Trampe pinned his second opponent of the day and advanced to the quarterfinals. However, losses in his next two matches kept him from placing in the tournament.

After a heart-breaking first round match in which 133-pounder Rollins lost by 1 point in the last 12 seconds, Rollins pinned his way through the consolation bracket to take third place.

Henderson came up with a big win Friday night by pinning Rich Vigorito of Southern Oregon in the quarterfinals, but lost his next two matches before defeating Joe Casey from the University of Great Falls for fifth place.

In a similar story, Dana's 184-pounder, Alderman, won his first three matches to advance to the championship semifinals. There Alderman met Joffrie Lander of Embry Riddle and lost a close 9-11 decision. Lander went on to finish second while Alderman took sixth.

A first-round loss sent Almond to the consolation bracket. Almond fought back through four tough matches to lock in an eighth-place finish.

The 2005 Vikings finish their season with fifth at Nationals, their 3rd Central Regional Championship, 3rd straight GPAC Championship and the best dual record in Dana history.
