University of Dubuque NCAA Qualifiers Individual Results
Ryan Warcynksi (157 - Freshmen) picked up some valuable experience at
the NCAA Championships this year. He lost a first round decision to #4
seeded Luke Miller (Ohio Northern) who went on to become the eventual
NCAA Champion at that weight class. Ryan wrestled much better in his
second match, losing a close decision to William Horwath (Ithaca) in
the second round match.
Josh Terrell (165 - Junior) came in as the #1 NCAA seed and was winning
his first round match with Justin Barowski (Delaware Valley) when late
in the 3rd period he hit a leg attack on a dangerous counter offensive
wrestler to get caught in a little bit of a funk and lose by fall.
Josh later responded back to beat Barowski 15-3 in the wrestle backs.
Josh displayed the heart of a champion by bouncing back to win five
straight matches at the NCAA Championships to claim 3rd place and become
the University of Dubuque*s first 3X NCAA All-American. Josh beat
several quality wrestlers and picked up several bonus points for his
team as he posted a 8-0 major decision over Jordan Schulte (UW-Stevens
Point) , a decision over #6 seeded Matt Baarson (St. Johns), a decision
over #2 seeded Carrington Banks, a 15-3 major decision over Just
Barowski (Delaware Valley), and a 4-3 decision over #3 seeded Nick
LeClere.
Evan Brown (174-Senior) came in as the #1 NCAA seed and won 3
consecutive matches with a decision over Chris Wade (Oneota State) 4-2,
a pin over Ross Dankers (Concordia Moorhead) and a 4-3 decision over
Kyle Kwait (Ohio Northern) to reach the NCAA finals for the second year
in a row. Evan wrestled Mike Schmitz (UW-LaCrosse) and gave up and
early takedown in the match against a very strong counter offensive
wrestler in the first period. Evan tried to chase Mike Schmitz down for
takedowns and stalling calls and ended up losing by a 5-2 decision after
giving up a last second takedown in the last period. Evan finishes his
college career with the most college career wins ever as a wrestler at
the University of Dubuque, and as a 3X NCAA Qualifier, an NCAA Academic
All-American, an NCAA Champion, and an 2X NCAA All-American, and 2X NCAA
Finalist.
For the past several year*s the program has been steadily rising in
national standings (22nd in 2008), (11th in 2009), (8th in 2010). A
heartfelt THANK YOU to all the UD Wreslting fans and especially to all
the seniors in the program (Ryan Lessner, Mark Schultz, Jacob Durbin,
Josh Terrell, Evan Brown, Chris Schiewe, and Anderson Sainci) for
gaining national recognition for the program and laying the foundation
for the future Spartans to win the NCAA Title. A big thanks as well to
all the UD Wrestling Alumni, especially Keith Lucey and Pete Pearson for
getting so many UD Wrestling Alumni involved with the program and
organizing the UD Wrestling Championships Social. Next year*s NCAA
Championships will be held at UW-LaCrosse, please mark your calendars
for March 4th & 5th and plan on supporting the UD Wrestling Program in
their quest for the NCAA Championship Title next year.

University of Dubuque Wrestling Achieves 1st NCAA All-American Since
NCAA Wrestling Championships Site - CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa
For the first time in 18 years, the University of Dubuque Wrestling Team earned NCAA All-America honors at the 2008 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
Sophomore Josh Terrell (157 lbs.), came in un-seeded at the tournament, and earned his first NCAA All-America honor at 157 pounds by placing fourth in the nation. Terrell lost his first match to # 3 seeded Kyle Katz and responded back from the loss to win four straight matches at the NCAA Championships including wins over Beau Hanson (Augsburg), #5 seeded Erik Hanson (Loras), Andrew Goldstein (Gettysburg), and #6 seeded Takafumi Hasimoto (New York University) before losing to Ryan Herwig (Delaware Valley) in the 3rd place championship match.
Sophomore Evan Brown (174 lbs.) came in unseeded and faced #3 seeded Kyle Vanderhyde (Olivet) in the first round. Evan fell short in the closing seconds losing by a 7-5 decision. Evan responded back with a dominating 15-4 decision over #6 seeded Phil Moenkedick (Concordia - Moorehad). Evan lost by a decision to # 8 seeded Jerome Owens (Johnson & Wales) in the match to determine NCAA All-American honors.
"Josh Terrell and Evan Brown are both mentally tough. Josh showed a lot of mental toughness coming back from a loss and winning four straight matches in the NCAA Championships. Evan Brown competed in over 55 matches this year and can wrestle through adversity. He's about as mentally tough as they come. These two wrestlers are helping to lay the foundation for others on our team to accomplish their goals at UD. It's an exciting time for our program - you can feel the confidence of our wrestlers growing. Both of our NCAA Qualifiers are young. We have a lot of young talent on our team and enough time to prepare these young men to win an NCAA Team title before they graduate." stated UD Head Coach Jon McGovern.
The University of Dubuque Wrestling Team finished 22nd in the national team standings with 15 points, only 1.5 points margin from 20th place Buena Vista University in the final national team standings. The 22nd place finish equals the best ever national finish in the history of UD Wrestling. The last UD Wrestling NCAA All-American was Troy Armstrong in 1990 (134 lbs).
The UD Wrestling Team also finished 27th in the nation as an NWCA Academic Scholar Team, marking the 3rd time in the last 4 years the team has been recognized in the top 30 in the nation as an NWCA Academic Scholar Team.
