Gettysburg's Dynamic Duo Heads to Nationals

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - For the second consecutive year, Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) will pit their grappling skills against the best the nation has to offer as the duo will represent Gettysburg College at the 35th Annual NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by Coe College, Cornell College, and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

From the opening whistle at the Ithaca College Tournament in November, the 2007-08 season as been about getting back to the national stage for both Shank and Goldstein. In order to achieve that goal, both wrestlers withstood a grueling five months of competition en route to repeating as Centennial Conference champions in their respective weight classes, Shank at 149 pounds and Goldstein at 157. With last year's experience at the NCAA Championships in their back pockets, both athletes are ready to make a run at All-America honors and possibly a national title.

"I think they're really prepared, so that's the most important thing," said first-year Head Coach Andy Vogel, a former three-time All-American at Messiah College. "Mentally and physically they are as ready as they have been all year. That makes me feel like they have trained to the level where they need to be. They have the talent and they've done the work to put themselves in this position."

Last season, both wrestlers won individual conference titles to earn berths at the national championships hosted by Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Both student-athletes fought hard, but failed to make the final eight in their brackets to earn All-America recognition. Shank dropped an opening bout to the top-seeded wrestler at 149 by a 5-2 score, and following a 12-6 victory in the consolation bracket, fell 7-2 to the seventh seed. Goldstein went out after two matches, dropping a pair of razor-sharp decisions by just two points each.

"Last year I was a little awestruck at the size of the tournament and the quality of the competition," said Shank, "but now that I know what to expect, I will be able to remain focused and prepare to wrestle my best".

Goldstein echoed his teammate's sentiments. "I was definitely overwhelmed last year. That attitude was my downfall. This year is completely different. I know I have the tools to compete with the best and I am going to wrestle with confidence for every second I am on the mat."

Shank has put together another banner year in his final season in an orange and blue singlet. He led the squad with a 32-6 record and polished off his second CC Championship at 149 pounds on Feb. 23. Shank led Gettysburg with six victories by fall and three technical falls, in addition to tying Goldstein for the team-lead with six major decisions. Heading into the final weekend of an outstanding career, he has solidified his place among the Bullets' all-time greats, ranking second all-time in wins with a career record of 114-24 (.826), but there is still one piece to the puzzle remaining.

"Personally, being an All-American has been my goal since I came to college," stated Shank. "All-America status would be a perfect way to end my college career; just qualifying for nationals is not nearly enough. I'm ready to get it done."

Goldstein began the season on top and is looking to end in a similar fashion. The Bullet junior won the 157-pound bracket at Ithaca and has marched his way to a 25-2 record this season, including his second straight CC title at 157. His aggressive and tenacious style has allowed him to record over 100 takedowns this season, 40 better than his next closest teammate. Goldstein could join Shank and Jake Dell '98 as the only Gettysburg wrestlers to record 100 wins with another productive season next winter as his career record stands at 75-14 (.843).

"We both have the ability and desire to place high," said Goldstein. "We have been training hard since early October and this is the culmination of that five-month grind."

"If I have learned one thing throughout my 15-year wrestling career," Goldstein added, "it is that you cannot take opportunities for granted. They may never come again."

Both grapplers enter the final weekend of the season ranked among the nation's elite as Shank sits ninth at 149 and Goldstein eighth at 157 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Brute-Adidas individual rankings (Feb. 26). In the national brackets, Shank will meet SUNY-Cortland's Paul LeBlanc in the first round. The two met in the finals of Messiah's Petrofes Tournament with LeBlanc pulling out a 4-3 decision thanks to a last-second takedown. Goldstein will also see a familiar face staring back at him in his first-round bout in the form of York (Pa.) College's John Neidrich. The pair has met twice this season with Neidrich pulling out a pair of close decisions, 3-1 at King's Monarch Invitational and 6-1 in overtime at a dual meet on Jan. 26.

If Shank and Goldstein can reach their goals of becoming All-Americans, they will be the first at Gettysburg to do so in a decade since Jake Dell won three certificates from 1996 to 1998, finishing as high as second in 1997.

"When you get to this level you can't just give up points," Vogel pointed out. "You see a lot of low scoring and tight matches at the national tournament so the guy that is able to fend the other guy off while working on his own stuff is the one that is going to have the most success. With both of our guys, if they are able to keep the other guy from touching their legs, they are awfully hard to beat."

"They have done a great job this year wrestling-wise and leading the team," he added, "and this is their chance to shine on the national level."

The 2008 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships gets underway on Friday, March 7, with weigh-ins at 9 a.m. followed by opening matches at 11 a.m. Competition continues on Saturday with the semifinals at 11 a.m. followed by the championship bouts at 7 p.m.
Gettysburg's Shank, Goldstein Repeat as CC Champions

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) went into the Centennial Conference Championships as the top seeds in their respective classes and they went out in the same fashion as each Gettysburg College grappler earned their second straight conference title. As a team, the Bullets tied their highest finish in the last four seasons by netting 35.5 points for fifth at the event hosted in Helfferich Gym on the campus of Ursinus College.

Shank and Goldstein's wins and freshman Bobby Christopher's (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) fourth-place finish helped push Gettysburg past Muhlenberg College for fifth. The Mules finished just one point behind the Bullets in the team standings with 34.5 points. The United States Merchant Marine Academy ended Ursinus' five-year run atop the conference podium with a dominating 31-point victory. The Mariners tallied 99.5 points thanks to three first-place finishes, three runner-ups, and three third-place finishes. Ursinus finished with 68.5 points in second, followed by Stevens Institute of Technology (60) and Johns Hopkins University (45). McDaniel College (28) and Washington & Lee University (25.5) rounded out the field in seventh and eighth, respectively. Stevens' Brandon MacWhinnie was named the Chris Clifford Award winner for the most career points in the tournament in addition to earning Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament after winning the 174-pound title.

Shank and Goldstein are the first Gettysburg wrestlers to repeat at the CC Championships since Jake Dell '98 polished off his fourth straight title a decade ago. Shank swept through the championship bracket at 149 pounds, ending with a hard-earned 2-1 overtime decision over the Merchant Marine's Dan Twito, while Goldstein also finished 3-0 and ended with a 9-3 victory over Charles Favia of Stevens in the championship.

Shank's day started with an easy victory in the opening round as the Bullet senior pinned R.J. Neaton of McDaniel in 1:22. In the semifinals, he scored another dominating victory over fifth-seeded Peter Lawrence of Washington & Lee, who took down last year's runner-up Chris Springer of Ursinus in the first round. Shank sent Lawrence down to the consolation bracket via a 19-2 technical fall. Lawrence would bounce back from the decision with a pair of victories in the lower bracket to end the day as the third-place finisher at 149.

Shank, meanwhile, was paired up with Twito in the tournament finale. Both wrestlers met twice this season, with Shank taking the first meeting 3-1 and Twito winning the second in overtime 9-7. Like that second meeting, the CC championship bout was equally as exciting with both wrestlers ending regulation knotted at 1-1. Following a scoreless sudden victory period, Shank escaped in the tiebreaker session and then rode Twito for 30 seconds to secure the 2-1 decision. He is now 32-6 on the season and 114-24 in his career and will move on to represent Gettysburg at the national tournament for the second straight year.

Goldstein posted an 8-4 opening round decision over Eric Levenseller of Johns Hopkins and followed that performance with a pin of McDaniel's Zack Hetrick in 2:22. The Bullet junior continued an impressive day with a 9-3 dismantling of Favia, who entered the match with a 28-4 record. With the victory, Goldstein matched his final record from last season with a 25-2 mark this winter, improving to 75-14 in his career, and he will join Shank on the national stage.

Christopher posted a pair of wins in the heavyweight division in his first league meet. He opened the day with a tightly contested match with James Roarty of Stevens, a match that ended tied 3-3 at the conclusion of overtime. Christopher advanced into the next round, however, thanks to a riding time advantage. His run was halted in the semifinals by eventual champion Matt Williams of Ursinus with a 7-3 decision. In the consolation, Christopher picked up his third pin of the year in 3:46 over Merchant Marine's Judd Connell, setting up a third-place rematch bout with Roarty. Roarty extracted revenge on the first-year, pulling out a 4-1 decision. Christopher closes his initial season with the program with a 25-19 record.

Gettysburg's remaining individual win came from senior Ray Cottiers (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) at 141. After losing his opening bout 5-1, Cottiers bounced back in the consolation bracket with an 11-4 decision over McDaniel's Tom Boehm. His day came to an end in the next round, however, with a fall in 4:50 to eventual third-place finisher Patrick Conrad of Stevens.

Shank and Goldstein have the next two weeks to prepare for their second showing at the NCAA Division III Championships hosted by Coe College, Cornell College, and the Iowa Athletic Conference at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 7-8. Gettysburg's Doherty Extends Win Streak with Pair of Wins

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Gettysburg College sophomore Patrick Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) extended his winning streak to 11 matches with a pair of victories at 165 pounds against Stevens Institute of Technology and host U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. The Bullets as a team were not so fortunate, falling 43-6 to the Ducks and 39-7 to the 17th-ranked Mariners.

Since losing in the first round of the Ursinus Homecoming Invitational on Jan. 12, Doherty has been on a tear for the past month with 11 straight victories to improve his season record to 20-9 overall. On Saturday, he opened with a 6-3 decision over Jordan Chacon of Stevens and followed with his third major decision victory of the season, 13-3 over the Mariners' Seth Ching.

Senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and freshman Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) each split a pair of matches. Shank won his opening bout at 149 pounds 6-3 over Stevens' Leo Dormann, but fell to Daniel Twito of Merchant Marine 9-7. His record now stands at 28-6. Christopher fell in his first heavyweight match against the Ducks by a 4-3 count, but bounced back with a 6-3 decision over the Mariners' Judd Connell, improving his season mark to 23-16.

Gettysburg Grapplers Take Care of Business Against McDaniel

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gettysburg College wrestling team scored pins in three of its first four matches en route to a 24-12 Centennial Conference dual-meet victory over visiting McDaniel College at Bream Gymnasium. Freshman Jack Bostrom (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley), and junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) all earned falls as the Bullets earned their first conference win of the season.

Gettysburg (2-11, 1-4 CC) never trailed in the contest as Bostrom set an early tone by scoring two near falls in the first round of his 133-pound match with Tim Hall before earning his first collegiate pin with just under a minute remaining in the second round.

McDaniel (4-11, 0-4 CC) fell behind 9-0 after the 141 bout as Bullet junior Richard Masella (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) picked up a near fall in the second round and a pair of takedowns in the final period to earn a 9-3 decision over Tom Boehm.

Both Shank and Goldstein made short work of their Green Terror opponents as each picked up pins in the first round. Shank disposed of R.J. Neaton in 2:26 at 149 to earn his team-best fifth pin of the winter, while Goldstein nearly equaled his senior teammate with a pin in 2:31 over Zach Hatrick at 157, giving Gettysburg a 21-0 lead.

A pitched battled ensued at 165 pounds between Patrick Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) and McDaniel's Cory Beall. With the score at 3-1 in favor of Beall after two rounds, Doherty pulled off an escape to cut the margin to one. Neither side managed another point until around 30 seconds when Beall brought the Bullet sophomore to the ground for the takedown and a 5-2 advantage. Needing points in a hurry, Doherty pulled off an escape out of the starting position with just 16 seconds to go in the match. The maneuver led to a grapple on the edge of the circle where Doherty managed to get the leverage advantage and bring down Beall just before the buzzer, knotting the score at 5-5. Thanks to a riding time of over one minute, Doherty picked up a 6-5 decision, improving his season record to 18-9.

Trailing 24-0 after the first five bouts wrestled, McDaniel earned decisions in the final four matches, including a 5-1 victory by Brock Glotfelter over fellow first-year Bobby Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) at heavyweight.

The Bullets travel to King's Point, N.Y., this Saturday, Feb. 9, to face host Merchant Marine Academy and Stevens Institute of Technology at noon.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Sophomore Patrick Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) and senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) each won three matches at a non-conference quadrangular meet hosted by King's College and including York (Pa.) College and New York University on Saturday.

As a team, the Bullets dropped all three matches, falling to 15th-ranked York 27-13, King's 27-19, and 26th-ranked NYU 32-13. Gettysburg narrowly missed earning a victory in the battle with the hosts, taking a 16-12 lead on a major decision victory by Doherty at 165 and sitting just five points behind (24-19) heading into the final heavyweight bout. The Monarch's Justin Bender held off Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), however, for a 5-4 decision.

Doherty continued an impressive second season with Gettysburg by picking up a trio of victories at 165 pounds on Saturday and improving his season record to 17-9. In his opening bout, he pulled out an 8-6 overtime victory against York's Brian Alwine. Doherty continued his afternoon by earning a 13-5 major decision over the host's Ryan Trees, a win that pulled the Bullets ahead in the team scoring 16-12. He polished off an unblemished afternoon with a 4-3 victory overs Pat Knight of NYU.

After an uncharacteristic two-match losing streak, Shank put himself back in the win column with a pair of decisions and one major decision at 149, improving his season record to 26-5. Goldstein Leads Gettysburg at Centennial Quad Meet

BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) picked up a trio of victories at 157 pounds at a Centennial Conference quadrangular meet hosted by Johns Hopkins University and including Muhlenberg College and Ursinus College. Goldstein, the eighth-ranked wrestler in his weight class in NCAA Division III, picked up a pin and two major decisions en route to improving his season record to 18-1 this winter.

The Bullets as a team did not fair as well as Goldstein, losing all three contests to fall to 1-7 overall on the season and 0-4 against Centennial competition. Muhlenberg (2-3, 1-1 CC) won the opener over Gettysburg 37-12 followed by a 39-7 setback at the hands of defending conference champion Ursinus (9-0, 2-0 CC). Hopkins (3-8, 2-1 CC) closed Gettysburg's day with a 37-9 decision. In the other contests, the Bears beat the hosts 29-11, but the Blue Jays polished off a 2-1 afternoon with a 29-13 win over the Mules.

Goldstein had little trouble with his competition on Saturday, opening his day with a pin in 2:05 against Matt Friedman of Muhlenberg, a victory which pulled the Bullets to 13-9 in the scoring column. The junior followed with a pair of major decisions at 157 against both Ursinus and the hosts, downing Jordan Baumeister 19-7 and Eric Levenseller 14-6, respectively. He is now tied with senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) for the team lead with five major decisions this season.

Shank won two of his three matches by decision, but dropped an opening clash with seventh-ranked Rob Kein of Muhlenberg. Shank, ranked ninth at 149 pounds by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) lost for only the fourth time this season with a 6-4 setback to Kein. He bounced back with fairly easy decisions in his final two bouts, beating Tim Hulme of Ursinus 7-0 and defeating the Blue Jays' Jim Crumlish 5-1 to improve his season mark to 23-4 overall.

Freshman heavyweight Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) notched a pair of victories as well, losing only to last year's CC runner-up Matt Williams of Ursinus. Williams, who improved his record to a conference-best 26-7 with a pair of victories on the day, edged the Bullet first-year 3-1. Christopher started the day on a high note, however, defeating last year's conference champion at 285, Joseph Tartar of Muhlenberg, by a 7-4 decision. He finished the day with a 5-2 win over Matt Rugani of Hopkins to improve his season record to 20-12 overall.

Gettysburg logged only one other win from an individual on the day as freshman Jack Bostrom (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) picked up his second win of the season with a 7-5 decision over the Mules' Michael Slevin at 133.

The Bullets host their first dual meet of the season against Elizabethtown College in a non-conference affair at Bream Gym on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m.

Gettysburg Grapplers Fall to 24th-Ranked Centenary 37-11

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - Senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and freshman Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) each picked up major decision victories for the Gettysburg College wrestling team, but it wasn't enough to lift the Bullets to a victory as host Centenary College pulled out a 37-11 win.

Centenary, ranked No. 24 in the latest NCAA Division III poll conducted by National Wrestling Coaches Association (Dec. 19), took an early lead with a forfeit victory at 125, a pin at 133, and decision at 141. Shank spoiled the shutout with a convincing 11-1 victory over David Alsieux at 149 pounds, picking up his team-best fifth major decision of the season and improving his season record to 21-3.

With junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) taking the day off to rest, the Bullets were forced to forfeit at 157, but sophomore Patrick Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade), fresh off a third-place finish at the Ursinus Invitational last weekend, brought the team back up with a 7-5 overtime win at 165. Doherty has already doubled his win total from his freshman season and is currently 14-9 this winter.

The Cyclones secured the victory with three consecutive victories until Christopher capped the match with a 13-2 win over Adam Pearsall at heavyweight, earning his second major decision on the year. Christopher ranks second on the team with a 17-11 record in his debut season.

Gettysburg returns to action this Saturday against a trio of Centennial Conference opponents. The Bullets will square off with host Johns Hopkins University, Muhlenberg College, and defending conference champion Ursinus College beginning at noon inside Goldfarb Gymnasium.

Shank Earns 100th Career Win for Gettysburg Wrestling

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) won the title bout at 149 pounds with his 100th career victory, leading the Gettysburg College wrestling team at the Ursinus College Homecoming Invitational Saturday afternoon.

In the team standings, the Bullets finished 35.5 points to place sixth among nine teams.

Shank, the second all-time winningest wrestler in Gettysburg history, finished 4-0 on the day, capped by a 7-2 decision over Ursinus' Chris Springer in the final and a rematch of last season's Centennial Conference 149-pound championship that was won by Shank.

Shank opened the afternoon with an 8-0 major decision in the first round before recording a medical forfeit and a fall to reach the final. He is now 20-3 for the season and 100-21 for his career.

Also recording a big day for Gettysburg was sophomore Patrick Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade), who finished third at 165. After losing in the first round, Doherty rallied with four straight wins in the consolation bracket, including a 6-0 decision over Josh Sabol of Ursinus in the third-place match.

Junior Richard Massella (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) each added two victories apiece for the Bullets. Massella opened the day with a 9-7 first-round decision, and he also posted a fall in the consolation bracket. Goldstein won his first two bouts of the day with a pair of decisions at 157, but dropped out with a medical forfeit in the semifinals of the consolations.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Centenary (N.J.) College for a non-conference match starting at 4:30 p.m.

Five Bullets scored victories on the day led by senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton). The victories moved Shank and Goldstein to 16-3 and 13-1 on the season, respectively.

In the heavyweight bout, freshman Bobby Christopher (Ft. Gettysburg's Shank Climbs All-Time Lists as Bullet Grapplers Earn First Win

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) wasted little time moving up the Gettysburg College wrestling all-time ranks, securing a pin in his first 149-pound match against Washington & Lee University and climbing into sole possession of second place in most career wins and most career pins. The senior finished 3-0 on the day at the Washington & Jefferson College Quadrangular as the Bullets picked up their first win of the season against Waynesburg College.

Gettysburg (1-2) fell in its opening two matches to Washington & Lee (26-13) and the host Presidents (28-10), the former representing a Centennial Conference bout, but bounced back with a dominating 41-6 decision over Waynesburg. Shank and junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) each picked up a trio of victories for the Bullets, while freshman Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and sophomore Patrick Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) each won a pair of matches.

Shank, who entered the day tied with Steven Kareha ’03 for second on the all-time wins list with 92 and tied with Jamie Binnall ’98 for second with 31 career pins, took only 1:49 to move into sole possession of second in both those categories with a victory over Washington & Lee’s Peter Lawrence. His encore performance was much tougher against Washington & Jefferson’s Shaun Yackey, but the Bullet senior gutted out a 6-4 decision. Shank closed his day and improved his record to 15-3 this season with a forfeit win against Waynesburg. For his career, he is 95-21 with 32 career pins.

Goldstein, who had missed his last two events of the first semester, started the second half of the schedule with three easy victories to improve to 12-1 on the year. The junior scored a pair of major decisions in his opening two bouts against the Generals and Presidents, winning 16-6 over Tim Manson and 17-6 over Keegan Donnan, respectively. Like Shank, his day was done after his second match with his third bout turning into a forfeit victory.

Christopher upped his season record to 14-9 with a 2-1 afternoon, dropping a close 3-1 decision to Washington & Jefferson’s heavyweight. He scored a 9-2 victory in his opening bout with Washington & Lee’s Zak Colangelo before picking up his second career pin in 6:25 against L.R. Neubauer of Waynesburg.

At 165 pounds, Doherty dropped a 3-0 decision against the Generals, but rebounded for a 6-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson’s Colin Woods. The sophomore closed the day in impressive fashion, manufacturing a technical fall against Waynesburg’s 165-pounder in 6:02. Doherty’s 2-1 day boosted his season record to 10-7 overall.

Gettysburg took seven of eight matches wrestled against Waynesburg, losing only at 133 with no contests taking place at 125 and 184. Senior Ray Cottiers (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) earned a victory by injury default at 141 pounds, while D.J. Neri won his collegiate debut by forfeit. Freshman Drew Wolenter (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) rounded out the Bullet winners with his first career victory and pin of Michael Capuzzi in 6:14 at 197.

Gettysburg resumes its dual meet schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 8, with a road trip to Lycoming College at 7 p.m.

Gettysburg's Goldstein Leads Bullets at Monarch Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) led the Gettysburg College wrestling team for the second consecutive week, this time finishing runner-up in the 157-pound division at the Monarch Invitational Tournament hosted by King's College on Saturday, Nov. 10.

With nearly 600 matches taking place and 265 wrestlers competing, the event ran well into the evening hours on Saturday, but Goldstein maintained his composure throughout the grueling day, racking up three victories heading into the finals. After earning a first-round bye, the Bullet junior posted a technical fall (20-5) over John Witham of Ursinus College. Goldstein then posted a pair of close decisions in the quarterfinals and semifinals, defeating Elizabethtown College's Jereme Heisey 3-1 and Messiah College's Mike Bressler 11-8, respectively, to earn a berth in the finals against York College's John Nieverich. One week removed from his 157-pound championship at Ithaca, Goldstein could not make it two wins in a row as Nieverich pulled out a 3-1 decision to take the title. The Bullet junior improved his season record to 9-1.

Also for the second straight week, freshman Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) posted a quartet of victories before closing his day in the semifinals of the consolation bracket of the heavyweight division. Christopher opened the day with his first collegiate fall, pinning Mike Trani of Centenary College in just 33 seconds. He earned a 3-2 decision over Wilkes University's Tyrone Curry in the next round before dropping down to the consolation bracket due to a 13-5 decision to eventual third-place finisher Luke Panizzi of York. In the lower bracket, Christopher earned two more wins, the first a 9-3 decision over Ursinus' Matt Williams and the second by default to earn a berth in the consolation semis for the second consecutive week. The first-year's run came to a halt, however, as Army's Ryan Cook pulled out a 3-2 decision. With the four victories on Saturday, Christopher's season record now stands at 8-4.

With only seven total competitors in the tournament, the only other Gettysburg wrestler to earn a victory was freshman Ben Cutrell (Marion, Mass./Governors Academy), who joined Christopher in the heavyweight division. Cutrell dropped his first bout with a fall in 2:20 to Washington & Jefferson College's Josh Brewer, but rebounded nicely with a pair of dominating efforts in the consolation bracket. After earning a 12-0 major decision in his first bout, Cutrell pinned his next opponent in 3:05. He was stopped in the following round with a 7-2 decision, evening his season record at 4-4.

Gettysburg continues its season-opening run of tournaments by competing in the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield (Mass.) College on Nov. 17. Opening bouts are slated to begin at 10 a.m.

Gettysburg's Goldstein Captures 157-Pound Title at Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. ˆ Junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) opened the 2007-08 wrestling with a dominating effort for Gettysburg College at the Ithaca College Invitational on Nov. 3-4, winning all six of his bouts and capturing the 157-pound championship. Goldstein was one of three Bullets to reach the semifinals of their respective weight classes, helping the Orange & Blue to a 12th-place finish in the 15-team field.

Gettysburg finished with 67.5 points thanks to the efforts of Goldstein, senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley), and freshman Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons). Shank finished second at 149 pounds, while Christopher put together an impressive collegiate debut with a fourth-place showing in the heavyweight division.

After posting four victories on the opening day of the invite, including a pair of falls and a major decision, Goldstein began Sunday with a win over New York University‚s Takafumi Hashimoto via medical forfeit in the semifinals. He faced his toughest test of the tournament in the finals against Dan DiColo of The College of New Jersey, but the Bullet junior and defending Centennial Conference champion at 157 came up with a 7-5 decision to take the title.

Shank won all three of his opening matches handily on Saturday to set up a semifinal showdown with the eighth-ranked wrestler in NCAA Division III, New York‚s Stephen Hult. Ranked ninth in the nation, Shank got the better of his opponent with a 12-9 victory to advance to the finals against another nationally-ranked foe, New Jersey‚s Tyler Branham. The Bullet senior gave the sixth-ranked Branham all he could handle and forced overtime with a last-second takedown, but the Lion All-American rebounded for an 8-6 decision

Christopher started his first career event with three victories on the opening day, but the Gettysburg first-year was halted in the semifinals by Oswego State University‚s Jake Taylor, who went on to win the event, with a fall at five minutes. Knocked down to the consolation bracket, Christopher picked up a 7-5 decision over New York‚s James Layman, before getting stopped in the third-place match by Sean DeDeyn by a narrow 3-2 margin.

Goldstein, Shank, and Christopher may have had the highest finishes for Gettysburg, but sophomore Pat Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) put in the most work, wrestling in seven matches at 157 over the two days. After winning his opening two matches before losing to DiColo in the main bracket, Doherty notched 6-5 and 7-3 decisions in his first two consolation matches. Following a medical forfeit victory, the Bullet sophomore had his weekend put to an end with a 7-3 loss to Joe Biango of New Jersey.

Freshman Ben Cutrell (Marion, Mass./Governors Academy) put together a productive opening weekend with victories in the main and consolation brackets of the heavyweight division. Cutrell picked up a 7-2 victory in his first bout on Saturday, and then added a pin at 2:45 over Conor Quinlan in his opening consolation match. First-year Ben Swanson (Wilmington, Del./James Hubert Blake) was the only other Bullet to earn a victory on the weekend, picking up a forfeit win in the consolation bracket of 174 pounds.

Gettysburg continues its season at the King‚s College Monarch Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 10. Opening matches are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
Gettysburg's New Era of Bullet Wrestling Set to Begin

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Sporting a pair of returning Centennial Conference champions and a new head coach, the Gettysburg College wrestling team is out to take down the competition this season and improve upon its seventh-place conference finish from a year ago. The Bullets return six letterwinners to the fold in 2007-08 in addition to some more than capable newcomers.

"One thing that's been nice so far is the team has worked really hard. There's a renewed enthusiasm there with the team and a new coaching staff," said first-year head coach Andy Vogel. "We don't have a huge team right now, but we have 13 guys that really care about what they're doing and want to get better. That's always a good start to any season when you have a good team that's willing to work."

Vogel brings a tremendous resume to Gettysburg as a three-time wrestling All-American at nearby Messiah College. He was a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference Champion at 149 pounds with the Falcons and spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Wheaton College in Illinois. Vogel filled the void left by former Bullet head coach Troy Dell, who left Gettysburg to assume the duties of Athletic Director at Frostburg State University in May.

"I think getting everybody back in the swing of things after the summer off took a little while, but we're going to be as ready as anyone else for this weekend and I'm excited to see these guys in action," commented the first-year coach. "I always tell them that we don't go to practice to get really good at practicing. It was all just rehearsal for the competition that's coming up."

The team Vogel inherits finished 2006-07 with a 3-12-1 dual meet record, including just 2-5 against Centennial foes. At the league meet hosted at Gettysburg last February, the Bullets placed seventh overall in the eight-team field.

Despite the low finish, the Orange & Blue had a pair of wrestlers earn individual titles for the first time since 2000 in senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and junior Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton). The duo forms a lethal combination in the middle of the Bullet lineup and combined for a record of 69-12 last season. Shank earned the Centennial's 149-pound title with an 11-2 major decision in the finals, while Goldstein picked up the 157-pound trophy with a 12-9 decision. With their individual successes, both athletes earned bids to the 2007 NCAA Division III Championships. In addition, Shank enters 2007-08 as the ninth-ranked wrestler at 149 in all of Division III.

"I think having them on the team has been good for me as a first-year coach to have a couple guys that can really set the tone in terms of where the other guys on the team want to be," said Vogel. "Plus, the two of them have really big goals for this year and they both want to be All-Americans. It's a realistic goal for each of them."

A big problem from last year's team was the inability to fill all 10 weight classes, but Vogel has athletes on his roster that should be able to get the job done at each position.

"We've got a young team, but we've got a great chance to do better than the team did last year and surprise some people just because we have a great chance to be competitive at most of the weight classes. That's really the key to winning dual meets."

It all starts at 125 pounds where a pair of freshmen are battling for the starting job in Joe Aversa (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) and Jack Bostrom (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury). The duo has pushed each other throughout the team's training sessions as well as pushing the other wrestlers around their weight class.

At 133, the Bullets return veteran Richard Masella (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional), who enters his third season, while at 141, senior Ray Cottiers (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) returns to the lineup following a two-year hiatus. Shank and Goldstein provide a stable foundation in the middle of the lineup with sophomore Aaron Balk (Needham, Mass./Needham) adding some experience as a returning letterwinner at 157.

The bottom portion of Gettysburg's lineup features two sophomores and four freshmen, led by returning letterwinners Pat Doherty (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) and Zach Travis (Austin, Texas/St. John's Prep School (Mass.)) at 165. Doherty posted a 7-7 record last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The remaining starting spots at 174, 184, and 197 will likely be filled by first-years Ben Swanson (Wilmington, Del./James Hubert Blake), Drew Wolenter (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), and Ben Cutrell (Marion, Mass./Governors Academy)), respectively. Freshman Robert Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), a state champion wrestler out of the Sunshine State, is expected to fill the void left by former Centennial Conference champion Mike Pattanite at heavyweight.

The 2007-08 schedule features a run of tournaments to open the season and some ultra-competitive dual, tri, and quad meets against nationally-ranked opponents, including No. 22 York (Pa.) College, No. 24 Lycoming College, and No. 30 New York University. The conference slate is nearly as daunting with five-time CC team champion Ursinus College and the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Muhlenberg College, all of which feature key returnees and strong recruiting classes.

"The first two weeks of the season is about seeing what you have and the rest of the season is making sure what you have is ready to go when it matters the most at the conference tournament in February," said Vogel. "I think we've got a number of wrestlers that can really make a mark this year and surprise some people in the conference and outside of the conference."

The 2007-08 season officially kicks off this weekend (Nov. 3-4) at the Ithaca Invitational hosted by Ithaca College. Opening matches are slated to start at 10 a.m. on both days.

Gettysburg Names Vogel Head Wrestling Coach

GETTYSBURG, Pa. ˆ Director of Athletics David Wright has announced the hiring of former Messiah College wrestling standout Andrew Vogel as the 17th head wrestling coach at Gettysburg College. Vogel assumes the position vacated by Troy Dell, who was named the athletic director at Frostburg State University in May.

"We are excited to have Andrew Vogel joining our staff as our new Head Wrestling Coach and look forward to many successful seasons in the years to come," said Wright. "Gettysburg College has a long tradition of success in wrestling and I believe Andrew will help our student-athletes build on that tradition."

"Andrew was a highly successful wrestler at the collegiate level," he added, "and he will bring a strong work ethic and winning attitude to our program."

Vogel, a 2003 graduate of Messiah, was a three-time All-American at 149 lbs., finishing as the NCAA Division III national runner-up in 2001 and earning seventh-place in 2002 and 2003. A three-time Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Champion, he posted a school-record 157 wins over his tenure with the Falcons and was named both the school's Senior Athlete of the Year and the Senior Male Sportsmanship Award recipient.

"When I saw Gettysburg had an opening, I thought it would be an ideal situation to come back to central Pennsylvania and be part of the team," said Vogel. I'm hoping to translate my experience as a wrestler and coach into building the best team possible at Gettysburg."

Vogel spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, planning practices and conditioning sessions for its NCAA Division III wrestling program. He was also involved in the recruiting process and handled administrative duties as assigned.

Aside from his collegiate activities, Vogel has been active in the wrestling community for many years, including founding a website completely devoted to NCAA Division III wrestling (www.d3wrestle.com). He has served as a teacher and instructor at various wrestling camps at his undergraduate alma mater as well as the Ken Chertow Gold Medal Training Camp in Lincolnwood, Ill.

An outstanding student, Vogel graduated from Messiah with a bachelor‚s degree in electrical engineering before earning a master‚s in the same subject area at North Carolina State University. He was a member of Messiah‚s Honors Program and was tabbed a NCAA Academic All-American in each of his final three seasons at the school. In addition, Vogel was named the MAC Winter Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and received a postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA in 2003.

"Not only is Andrew a great young wrestling coach, he is very bright and articulate. As a NCAA post-graduate scholarship winner, he fits well into an academically rigorous institution like Gettysburg," said Wright.

The 74th season of Bullet wrestling begins on Nov. 3 at the Ithaca Invitational Tournament. Gettysburg returns 11 letterwinners from last season‚s 3-12-1 team that finished seventh at the conference championships, including national qualifiers and CC champions Andrew Goldstein and Matt Shank.

"My hope is to influence their technique and their mind-set so their expectation of winning is at a high level,‰ said Vogel. „I want to draw as many wrestlers from the surrounding area as possible and put them together to have a team that is able to compete for championships in the Centennial Conference and make it to the NCAA Tournament."

Gettysburg's Shank and Goldstein See Season End at NCAA Championships

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Two weeks after winning Centennial Conference titles, junior
Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and sophomore Andrew Goldstein
(Easton, Pa./Easton) were back in action at the 2007 NCAA Division III Wrestling
Championships hosted by Loras College at the Five Flags Center. Both wrestlers
fell in their first bout of the day to drop into the consolation bracket. Shank
picked up a win in his first wrestle-back bout, but both were eliminated later.

entered the tournament with a 25-3 record and 11 bonus wins. Shank wrestled him
tough, but was decisioned by a 5-2 count. In the first round of the
wrestle-backs, he defeated Adam Weber of Wartburg, 12-6, before falling to
seventh-seeded Tim Bohlman of York (Pa.). Bohlman entered the weekend with a
33-7 mark on the season.

In the 157-pound bracket, Goldstein got a bye through the first
round, but faced off against No. 2 seed Ross Needham of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.
Goldstein lost what would be the first of two low-scoring bouts on the day.
Needham claimed a 2-0 decision, and Jacob Malone of Saint Johns earned a 3-1 win
after he and Goldstein both got byes to the second round of the consolation
bracket.

Goldstein finishes the season with a 25-4 overall mark. Shank's

Gettysburg's Shank and Goldstein Win CC Titles, Qualify for NCAA Tournament

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Junior 149-pounder Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) and sophomore 157-pounder Andrew Goldstein (Easton, Pa./Easton) each strung together three wins to earn individual titles at the 2007 Centennial Conference (CC) Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Bream Gymnasium. They are the first Bullet teammates to win CC titles in the same season since 2000. Ursinus scored 85.5 points to win its fifth-consecutive team title despite not having an individual champion. The Bears had six second-place finishers and a pair of consolation champions.

Muhlenberg, the second-place finisher with 74.5 team points, boasted four individual champions on the day. Included was senior 197-pounder Matt Loesch, who became just the sixth wrestler in conference history to win four-straight championships. He earned the Chris Clifford Memorial Award, given to the senior with the most career tournament points. Mules' junior William Hall was victorious at 133 pounds, and he was joined atop the podium by sophomore 141-pounder Robert Kein and junior 285-pounder Joe Tartar.

Gettysburg finished seventh with 30 team points, helped by Shank, the No. 2 seed in the 149-pound bracket, who cruised through the field. He won the quarterfinal with a 15-0 technical fall against Washington & Lee junior Roderick Gagne. In the semifinal, Shank earned an 8-1 decision against third-seeded Joe DeCampo of Muhlenberg, and he won an 11-2 major decision against No. 4 seed Chris Springer of Ursinus. With his perfect day, Shank moves to 33-6 on the season, which is the fifth-highest single-season total in Bullets' history. He also has 80 career victories, needing just eight more to move into a tie for fifth place on the Gettysburg career list.

Goldstein entered the day with the second-best winning percentage in the CC at 22-2 (.917) and swept through three more bouts. He has now won 15 in a row. As the top seed in the bracket, he opened with a pin of Muhlenberg sophomore Matthew Friedman in 2:47. He followed with a pair of decisions, 10-8 against No. 4 seed Peter Lawrence of Washington & Lee in the semifinal and a 12-9 count against Ursinus' Mark Barber in the final.

Senior 285-pounder Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, N.J./Holy Cross) entered as the No. 3 seed in defense of his 2006 title. His hopes of a repeat were dashed quickly in the quarterfinal when Jonathon Freeman of Johns Hopkins scored the upset with a fall at 3:34. Pattanite decisioned Merchant Marines' John Brunetti, 13-5 in the first round of the consolation bracket. He was locked in a classic heavyweight bout with No. 4 seed John Christopher of Washington & Lee. Christopher earned the escape point after choosing down to open the second period, and Pattanite returned the favor in the third. With 41 seconds left in the first sudden victory period, Christopher scored a takedown to earn the 3-1 win and end Pattanite's outstanding career. He finishes with a record of 74-50.

Sophomore Dean Staley (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) entered the championships as an unseeded participant at 184 pounds. He drew top-seeded Eric Fishel of Johns Hopkins to open the day, and quickly put a big scare into the eventual champion. Staley attacked on the opening whistle, earning a quick takedown. He then put Fishel on his back for a near fall and three more points, but the Fishel would escape and eventually turn the tables on Staley, earning the fall with just six seconds left in the first period. Staley was then eliminated by fall in the first round of the consolation bracket by McDaniel's Corey Beall, the fourth seed.

All of the individual champions earned automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Tournament to be held on Mar. 2-3 at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Loras College will serve as the host.

In other action, Merchant Marine freshman Phil Greene decisioned Ursinus sophomore Steve Kingsland, 4-1, in the first tiebreaker period of the 125-pound championship bout. Kingsland is the conference coaches' choice for the CC wild card bid to the NCAA tournament. At 165 pounds, 2007 Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Year Brandon MacWhinnie from Stevens Tech won his championship bout with the fastest fall of the day. Wrestling as the top seed, he took out No. 2 seed Anthony Boniello of Washington & Lee in just 1:36. McDaniel's Andrew Winfield, the sixth-ranked 174-pound wrestler in the country, avenged his 2006 championship loss to senior David Kraus of Johns Hopkins, 10-3, to punch his ticket to nationals.

Improved Gettysburg Squad Sets Sights on Conference Title

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - When the 2004-05 season ended the Gettysburg wrestling team finished with nine wins, five more than the previous season. The team will look to build on that improvement throughout the 2005-06 season and finish above .500 for the first time since 1997-98. They are also looking to win Gettysburg's first Centennial Conference (CC) title.

"We will be improved this season and our goal is to compete at the conference level," ninth-year coach Troy Dell stated. "I think that is what we've been striving for the past several years and we have some guys now who can help us get over that hump and win a conference championship."
There will be more depth on this year's team.
"We will fill all of the weight classes this season," said Dell. "We're a little thin in numbers, but outside of that we should be a pretty solid lineup."
The team participated in three tournaments early this season and has made strides toward its ultimate goal.

The Bullets' solid lineup is led by sophomore Matt Shank (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley) and freshman Andrew Goldstein (Easton, PA/Easton).
Shank moved up to the 149 weight class after finishing second at the CC championships last year at 141. He has seen early season success at the Ithaca Invitational and the Springfield Invitational, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. He currently has an 8-4 record and leads the team in technical falls (1), major decisions (2) and reversals (5).
Quickly seeing success at the collegiate level, Goldstein comes from a strong high school program where he placed seventh at the Class AAA state tournament as a senior. He currently leads the Bullets in wins (10), technical falls (1) and takedowns (47). Goldstein, who wrestles at 141, achieved a second-place finish at the King's Monarch Invitational and a fifth-place finish at Ithaca.
Senior Mike Pattanite (Tabernacle, NJ/Holy Cross) is following a strong junior campaign in which he finished second at the CC championships in the heavyweight division. This season he has a 7-5 record and marched to a second place finish at the King's Monarch Invitational by pinning three opponents. He leads the team with four pins.

Two other Bullets who have had early season success are senior Caleb Seufert (Gaithersburg, MD/Northwest) and sophomore John Leinberger (Great Falls, VA, Langley). Seufert had a second-place finish in the 165 weight class at the King's Monarch Invitational and leads the team in escapes (21). Leinberger, who wrestles at 184, placed sixth at Springfield and pinned three opponents during the tournament. His three pins rank second on the team behind Pattanite.

Gettysburg is also relying on the upperclass leadership of seniors Jeff Morgan (Reston, VA/Langley) and Aaron Fuchs (Chester Springs, PA/The Hill School), and junior Alex Emmer (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin). Emmer has won four matches, pinning one, while both Morgan and Fuchs have three wins this season.

In addition, the Bullets have youth on the roster that is getting great early season experience that will carry over into the CC season. Sophomore Michael Stambaugh (Gettysburg, PA/New Oxford) and freshmen James Stevenson (Wyncote, PA/Cheltenham), Daniel Clarke (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton Central), and Richard
