All matches will be held at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Conference officials announced the preliminary seeds, which are determined by a vote of conference head coaches. Five different schools have No. 1 seeds in the 10 weight classes, but Iowa leads the way with three. Indiana and Minnesota each have two top seeds, while Ohio State, Wisconsin and Illinois have one. All 10 of Iowa's wrestlers earned pre-seeds.
Metcalf is a two-time Big Ten champion and has earned Outstanding Wrestler honors at the conference meet twice. Borschel is ranked first in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News and WIN Magazine, and second by Intermat.
Beatty, who is ranked fourth in the nation by Intermat and WIN, earned the top seed at 197 with a 13-2 season record. The Wilton, IA, native is making his return to the Hawkeye lineup after missing the last two months of competition due to injury. He placed fourth at the 2009 Big Ten meet and has a career record of 46-22.
The other top Big Ten pre-seeds are Angel Escobedo (125) and Nathan Everhart (Hwt.) of Indiana, Jayson Ness (133) and Dustin Schlatter (157) of Minnesota, Reece Humphrey (141) of Ohio State, Andrew Howe (165) of Wisconsin and John Dergo (184) of Illinois.
Hawkeye redshirt freshman Matt McDonough (125) and seniors Daniel Dennis (133), Ryan Morningstar (165) and Dan Erekson (Hwt.) all earned second seeds, while sophomore Montell Marion (141) and senior Phillip Keddy (184) are seeded third. Iowa junior Jake Kerr is seeded fifth at 157.
McDonough enters his first Big Ten tournament with a 29-0 record, going 8-0 in conference duals. Ranked third in the nation by AWN and WIN, and fourth by Intermat, McDonough has never faced Escobedo in collegiate competition. Dennis, who placed fifth at the 2009 Big Ten meet, is 16-2 this season with a 7-1 Big Ten dual record and a 63-26 career mark. Morningstar and Keddy are three-time Big Ten placewinners, both advancing to the 2009 finals. Morningstar is 23-4 this season with a 103-36 career record, going 7-1 in Big Ten dual. Iowa's Metcalf Earns Final Big Ten Weekly Honor
PARK RIDGE, IL -- For the fifth and final time of his Hawkeye career, Iowa 149-pounder Brent Metcalf has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. The senior from Davison, MI, is one of three Big Ten wrestlers to have earned the weekly conference honor five times in their collegiate careers. Minnesota's Ryan Lewis (2001-03), Michigan State's Nick Simmons (2004-07) and Northwestern's Jake Herbert (2004-09) are the other three.
Metcalf, who is ranked first in the nation, earned the honor for helping the Hawkeyes finish out the 2009-10 season undefeated (23-0) for the second-straight season and pick up their third-straight Big Ten regular season title with wins over #3 Ohio State (32-3) and #14 Wisconsin (31-6) last weekend. The wins helped Iowa extend its school-record winning streak to 61 matches. Metcalf scored a 3-1 victory over #2 Lance Palmer of Ohio State Friday night in Iowa City, recording his 100th career victory and going undefeated (25-0) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena during his collegiate career. The Hawkeye senior received a forfeit in the dual at Wisconsin Sunday afternoon to stay undefeated at 29-0 and post a perfect 8-0 record in Big Ten dual competition.
It's the fifth time this season a Hawkeye wrestler has been named Big Ten wrestler of the week, which ties Iowa's school record of five set during the 2002-03 and 2007-08 seasons. Metcalf (Jan. 5), senior Jay Borschel (174-Jan. 12), and sophomore Montell Marion (133-Jan. 19) were honored in January, and senior Daniel Dennis (133) was honored Feb. 2. It was the first time, since the Big Ten Conference started awarding the weekly honor during the 2001-02 season, that wrestlers from the same team earned the honor in three consecutive weeks. Metcalf is one of only two wrestlers to earn the weekly conference honor twice this season. Ohio State's Palmer (Jan. 26, Feb. 16) and Penn State's Cyler Sanderson (Nov. 17, Dec. 22) each collected the honor twice.
Up next for Iowa is a trip to the Big Ten Championships, March 6-7, where the Hawkeyes will fight for their third-straight and 34th overall conference team title. The event will be held at the University of Michigan's Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, MI. All-session tickets ($30) are available from the UM Athletic Ticket Office (734-764-0247 or www.MGoBlue.com/tickets). Single-session tickets will be on sale at Crisler Arena on days of competition.
Iowa Defeats Wisconsin To Win Third-Straight Big Ten Regular Season Title
MADISON, WI -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won its third straight Big Ten regular season title Sunday afternoon with a 31-6 victory over #14 Wisconsin (8-10, 4-4 Big Ten) in Madison, WI. The dual will be aired at 10 p.m. (CT) Sunday on the Big Ten Network. The Hawkeyes, who posted their second-straight undefeated dual season with a 23-0 record (8-0 Big Ten), picked up their 61st straight dual win and 41st straight road dual win to close out the 2009-10 regular season.
Iowa went 8-2 in the dual in front of 2,578 fans at the UW Field House, scoring team bonus points in three matches and allowing a total of four takedowns. Hawkeye seniors Brent Metcalf (149 - 29-0), Jay Borschel (174 - 28-0) and Dan Erekson (Hwt. - 8-0), and redshirt freshman Matt McDonough (125 - 29-0) all posted wins to remain undefeated on the season. The win was also the 30th Big Ten victory for Hawkeye Head Coach Tom Brands.
Iowa jumped out to a 19-0 lead with wins at the first five weights. McDonough started the dual at 125 with a 10-1 win over Drew Hammen to record his 11th major decision of the season. Leading 4-1 after the first period, McDonough scored a reversal with 10 seconds left in the second period to take a 6-1 lead. He then added three nearfall points in the third and a point for riding time for the 10-1 win, which was his 22nd bonus-point victory of the season. Hawkeye senior Daniel Dennis, who is ranked between third and seventh in the nation, used 1:52 of riding time to score a 2-1 win over #5 Tyler Graff at 133. The Badger redshirt freshman escaped with less than 10 seconds left in the second period to take a 1-0 lead, but Dennis followed with a third-period escape and kept his riding time intact for the win. At 141, sophomore Montell Marion gave up Iowa's first takedown of the dual, but responded with an eight-point third period to beat Wisconsin's Cole Schmitt, 11-4. The 149-pound bout between the top-ranked Metcalf and #5 Kyle Ruschell was one of the dual's marquee match-ups, but Wisconsin forfeited to give Iowa a 16-0 lead. It was the 25th time in 29 bouts that Metcalf scored extra team points for the Hawkeyes. Iowa junior Jake Kerr scored two first-period takedowns in his 157-pound match with Greg Burke, and held on for the 6-5 win.
After the intermission, fourth-ranked Hawkeye senior Ryan Morningstar could not pull off the upset over top-ranked Badger Andrew Howe at 165. After a scoreless first period, Howe scored an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Morningstar, who is now 0-4 against the defending Big Ten Champion and NCAA runner-up, chose the down position to start the third period. Howe, who improved to 28-0 on the season and snapped Morningstar's eight-match winning streak, held the Hawkeye senior down until he accumulated 1:04 of riding time. He then released Morningstar to tie the score at 1-1, but Howe's riding time point gave him the victory.
Borschel stopped any chance of a Badger run with his 4:26 pin of Brendan Ard at 174. The Hawkeye senior was close to the fall in the first period, but had to settle for a takedown and three nearfall points to take a 5-0 lead. After a neutral start to the second period, Borschel scored another takedown and then turned Ard to collect his ninth pin and 19th bonus-point win of the season.
Hawkeye senior Phillip Keddy followed a 184 with a 4-3 decision over Badger Travis Rutt to give Iowa a 28-3 lead. Rutt scored an early takedown in the first period, but Keddy quickly escaped and scored a takedown of his own for a 3-2 lead. Rutt escaped after starting the second period in the down position to tie the score at 3-3, but Keddy's escape in the third period have him the 4-3 win.
Wisconsin scored its second and final victory of the night at 197 when junior Trevor Brandvold, who is ranked between fifth and seventh in the nation, recorded a 4-2 victory over Hawkeye junior Luke Lofthouse. Lofthouse scored an early takedown, but Brandvold followed with an escape and takedown to take a 3-2 lead. Brandvold added a second-period escape and held off Lofthouse's third-period takedown attempts for the win. Erekson closed out the dual with a 3-2 decision over Badger heavyweight Eric Bugenhagen.
Iowa will wrestle for its third straight and 34th overall conference team title March 6-7 at the 2010 Big Ten Wrestling Championships. The event will be held at the University of Michigan's Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Session One (first round and quarterfinals) is set to start Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT). Session Two (championship semifinals and consolation matches) will begin Saturday at 5 p.m. Sunday's Session Three (consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches) will start at 11 a.m., with the championships round (first, third and fifth-place matches) starting at 1:05 p.m. The championships round will be aired live on the Big Ten Network. Iowa Beats Minnesota, 28-9
MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team extended its winning streak to 59 dual matches Sunday night with a 28-9 win at #5 Minnesota at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. The Hawkeyes improved to 21-0 (6-0 Big Ten) while handing the Golden Gophers (11-5, 5-1 Big Ten) their first conference dual loss of the season. Iowa went 7-3 on the night, scoring team bonus points at six weights. It was Iowa's second win over Minnesota this season, posting a 28-18 win Jan. 10 in the championship semifinals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls.
"In a dual meet like this you need bonus points, and we got them early," said Hawkeye Head Coach Tom Brands, who collected his 80th career victory with the win. "This was a big win for us. This rivalry is not going away. We have got to be ready to come into an environment like this and perform."
Hawkeye redshirt freshman Matt McDonough set the tone for the dual with his opening 13-2 major decision over #6 Zach Sanders at 125. McDonough, who is ranked fourth in the nation with an undefeated 27-0 record, dominated Sanders. He accumulated over four minutes of riding time on four takedowns and three nearfall points.
Minnesota handed Iowa its first individual dual loss since Jan. 29 when top-ranked Jayson Ness scored an 8-4 win over Iowa senior Daniel Dennis at 133. Ness, who is undefeated at 22-0, built a 5-0 lead early in the second period. Dennis, who is ranked third by Amateur Wrestling News and Intermat, and seventh by WIN Magazine, scored a takedown in the second period and an escape in the third period to pull within two (5-3), but Ness scored another takedown and a point for riding time for the win. Dennis is now 14-2 on the season.
Iowa added two more bonus-point wins at 141 and 149 to take a 13-3 lead. Sophomore Montell Marion avenged last month's National Duals loss to Minnesota's Mike Thorn with a 15-7 major decision at 141 to pick up his fourth straight win. Marion took a narrow 7-5 lead into the third period, scoring a reversal, takedown, three nearfall points and a riding time point for the win. The Hawkeye sophomore is now 18-3 on the season, going 10-2 in dual competition. At 149, top-ranked Iowa senior Brent Metcalf improved to 27-0 with his 23-8 match-ending technical fall in 6:19 over Minnesota redshirt freshman Mario Mason. Metcalf scored a takedown and two nearfall points in the first minute of the match, and added another takedown before being caught in a scramble and getting taken down by Mason. Metcalf quickly escaped, added another takedown in the first period and four more in the second period for a 20-7 lead. One third-period takedown and a stalling point for Mason gave Metcalf his 24th bonus-point win of the season.
The Golden Gophers grabbed their second win of the night when #2 Dustin Schlatter scored a 4-1 decision over Iowa junior Jake Kerr at 157.
The Hawkeyes came out of the intermission with three straight major decisions from three Iowa seniors to seal the team victory. Ryan Morningstar got the run going with his 9-0 win over Cody Yohn at 165. After a scoreless first period, Morningstar scored five nearfall points from the top position in the second period. He then added an escape, takedown and riding time point in the third period to improve to 22-3 this season and collect his seventh straight win. At 174, Jay Borschel kept his 26-0 record spotless with a 14-2 win over Scott Glasser. Borschel, who is ranked first or second in the nation, dominated the match, scoring a takedown in each period and tallying four nearfall points in the first three minutes. Glasser, who is ranked between seventh and eighth, had won 17 of his last 18 bouts with his last loss coming to Borschel at National Duals in January. At 184, Phillip Keddy scored a takedown in each period and accumulated over four minutes of riding time in his 9-1 win over Kaleb Young.
Minnesota put its final points on the board at 197 when Sonny Yohn scored a 7-0 decision over Iowa junior Luke Lofthouse. Lofthouse fought off his back in the second period, but Yohn added an escape, takedown and riding time point in the third period for the win.
Hawkeye senior Dan Erekson needed an extra minute in his heavyweight match with Ben Berhow, scoring a 5-3 win in sudden victory. Neither wrestler scored in the first period, but Erekson escaped in the second period and scored a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Berhow escaped at the end of the second period and the start of the third to make the score 3-2. Erekson was warned for stalling twice in the third period, which gave Berhow a penalty point and sent the match into overtime tied at 3-3. Top-Ranked Iowa Hawkeyes Edge #4 Oklahoma State, 19-16
IOWA CITY, IA -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team fought off a strong performance by #4 Oklahoma State, scoring a 19-16 win Saturday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. A crowd of 10,967 was on hand to see the Hawkeyes pick up their 52nd straight dual win, beating the Cowboys for the first time in Carver-Hawkeye since December 4, 2000. Both teams won five bouts, but Iowa's bonus-point wins at 125, 149 and 174 were the difference in the final team scores. Iowa remains undefeated on the season at 14-0, while handing Oklahoma State (8-1-1) their first season loss. The match will be aired Sunday at 9 p.m. (CT) on the Big Ten Network.
"I think two years ago when Oklahoma State came to town, looking back on it, I think we made a mistake not getting ready for them," explained Hawkeye Head Coach Tom Brands, who recorded his 90th career coaching victory with the win. "I think we did a better job getting ready for them (this year), but we left a lot of points on the mat. When you leave a lot of team points on the mat, you move a lot of team points from your column to theirs. That's what happened."
"I'm not going to admit it, but I feel a little bit drained because it was big for us," said Brands. "It was a big statement for our program. I feel like our guys - as a team, as a whole - rose to the occasion. I give them credit for last weekend (at National Duals), and we've got to get better going into this next phase (of the season)."
Iowa jumped out to a 4-0 lead on redshirt freshman Matt McDonough's 13-4 major decision over ninth-ranked Oklahoma State senior Chris Notte at 125. McDonough, who is ranked fourth in the nation with a 20-0 record, scored three third-period takedowns and accumulated over four minutes of riding time in the match.
Oklahoma State answered at 133 with #6 Jordan Oliver's 3-2 upset of #4 Daniel Dennis. The Hawkeye senior led 1-0 going into the final period. Oliver, who is a redshirt freshman, escaped to tie the score at 1-1. Dennis took a 2-1 lead with less than a minute remaining when Oliver was given his second stalling warning of the bout. But Oliver scored a takedown off a scramble as time expired to record the win, and hand Dennis (8-1) his first loss of the season. It was the first match back in the lineup for Dennis, who has been out injured since Iowa's dual with Iowa State at Ames on Dec. 6.
Hawkeye sophomore Montell Marion had a tough task against fifth-ranked sophomore Jamal Parks at 141, but blanked Parks, 4-0, to record an upset of his own. After a scoreless first period, Marion scored an escape and takedown in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Parks chose the down position to start the third period, but could not escape. The unranked Hawkeye sophomore accumulated 3:16 of riding time during the match, improving to 12-2 on the season.
Iowa picked up critical team bonus points at 149 when top-ranked Hawkeye senior Brent Metcalf scored a 21-5 technical fall over Oklahoma State junior Quinten Fuentes in 5:15. Metcalf, who improved to 20-0 on the season, scored three takedowns and a three-point nearfall in each of the first two periods. He ended the match with an escape and takedown early in the third period.
Oklahoma State closed the gap to 12-10 with wins at the next two weights. At 157, Cowboy junior Neil Erisman recorded a 16-7 major decision over Hawkeye junior Aaron Janssen at 157. Janssen scored a second-period takedown to pull within two points (5-3), but Erisman rolled off nine straight points to score Oklahoma State's only team bonus points of the night. Cowboy redshirt freshman Alex Meade then pulled an upset at 165 with a 5-3 win over Iowa senior Ryan Morningstar. Meade, who is ranked between 10th and 13th in the nation, scored takedowns in the first and third periods, while holding third-ranked Morningstar to three escapes in the match.
Hawkeye seniors Jay Borschel (174) and Phillip Keddy (184) stepped up to put Iowa in position for the team win. Borschel, who is ranked first or second in the nation, recorded his 80th career victory with a 9-1 major decision over Oklahoma State sophomore Mike Benefiel. Borschel, who is undefeated at 19-0 this season, scored a takedown in each period and accumulated 4:37 of riding time to hand Benefiel, who is ranked between seventh and 14th in the country, his second loss of the season. Keddy followed with a tough 3-2 win over Oklahoma State junior Clayton Foster at 184, collecting his 90th career win.
Leading 19-10 with two bouts left, Iowa's hopes for its 52nd straight dual win rested on reserves Luke Lofthouse (197) and Blake Rasing (Hwt.). Lofthouse fought hard against seventh-ranked sophomore Alan Gelogaev, but lost the bout 3-2. Oklahoma State needed a pin from top-ranked heavyweight Jared Rosholt to tie the dual, but Rasing had other plans. Down 5-0 to start the third period, Rasing escaped and scored two takedowns of his own to pull within one (6-5), but ran out of time and lost 7-5.
The Hawkeyes also sent five unattached competitors to the annual Brand Open in Omaha, NE, Saturday. Freshman Ethen Lofthouse won the 174-pound title, while junior Tyler Clark placed second at 133 and freshman Dylan Carew placed third at 149.
Up next for top-ranked Iowa is its first Big Ten road trip of the 2009-10 season. The Hawkeyes will wrestle Michigan (4-7) Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. (CT) at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor. Then they will face Purdue (8-3) Jan. 24 at Noon (CT) at Lowell High School Gymnasium in Lowell, IN.

Iowa Hawkeyes Win Third Straight National Duals Title
CEDAR FALLS, IA -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won its third straight NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals team title Sunday afternoon with a 19-12 win over second-ranked Iowa State in the championships semifinals. The Hawkeyes are only the second school in the tournament's 22-year history to win three straight team titles. Oklahoma State also won three straight titles from 2003-05. Hawkeye senior 174-pounder Jay Borschel was named Division I Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
Iowa improved to 13-0 and extended its dual winning streak to 51 matches, while posting a 28-12 record at the two-day tournament at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls. The Hawkeyes have won a total of six National Duals titles (1992, 1995, 1996, 2008, 2009, 2010).
The Hawkeyes handed Iowa State (6-2) their second dual loss of the season. Iowa won the earlier season meeting, 18-16, on Dec. 6 in Ames. Both teams won five matches in that dual, but Iowa scored the win with two extra team bonus points. In Sunday's National Duals finals, Iowa won six matches and did not allow Iowa State to score any extra team bonus points.
"We came out slugging in that fight," said Hawkeye Head Coach Tom Brands. "We got knocked down a couple of times, but we got back up a lot. Was that our best lineup out there? It doesn't matter because we believe in our guys. Our depth is deep and we are progressing."
Hawkeye redshirt freshman Matt McDonough kicked off the dual at 125 with a thrilling 9-8 victory over Iowa State redshirt freshman Andrew Long. Long, who is ranked fifth in the nation, scored the first takedown of the match, but McDonough responded with an escape and a takedown with four seconds left in the period to take a 3-2 lead. McDonough, who is ranked fourth in the nation, chose the down position to start the second period, but fell behind 5-3 when Long scored three nearfall points. McDonough scored a reversal to tie the score at 5-5, but Long escaped to take a 6-5. McDonough scored his second takedown of the match to take a 7-6 lead into the third period. Long escaped to tie the score at 7-7, but McDonough scored a takedown off a scramble to take a 9-7 lead. Long recorded an escape, but McDonough came away with the win. It is the third time this season the two have met, with McDonough winning all three decisions. He is undefeated at 19-0 this season.
Iowa State's Nick Fanthorpe tied the team score at 3-3 with his 8-3 decision over Iowa redshirt freshman Nate Moore at 133. Moore, who is wrestling for injured starter Daniel Dennis, scored three escapes in the dual, but could not get his offense going against the eighth-ranked Cyclone senior.
Iowa responded with a five-match winning streak that sealed the team victory and tournament title. Hawkeye senior Dan LeClere got things going at 141 with his 7-2 decision over Cyclone sophomore Dalton Jensen, who was wrestling for injured starter and second-ranked Nick Gallick. LeClere scored two takedowns in the bout and rode Jensen the entire third period for his ninth collegiate win of the season.
Hawkeye senior 149-pounder Brent Metcalf won his fourth career victory against Cyclone senior and Iowa City native Mitch Mueller, scoring a 7-3 decision. With the score tied at 2-2 after the first two periods, the top-ranked Hawkeye recorded two third-period takedowns to remain undefeated at 19-0 this season.
Iowa junior Aaron Janssen picked up his 20th career victory with a 3-1 win in sudden victory over Cyclone sophomore Andrew Sorenson. Both wrestlers scored escapes in regulation, and Janssen scored the takedown with 15 seconds left in sudden victory to record the win for Iowa.

Iowa Pin Down Northern Iowa, 48-3
IOWA CITY, IA -- The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team (9-0) recorded six pins and three major decisions en route to a 48-3 win over Northern Iowa (3-4) Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The 45-point victory margin is Iowa's largest in the 79-year series, and the win was Iowa Head Coach Tom Brands' 85th career victory.
"That was a team that was focused on tonight, focused on what they needed to do," said Brands. "It was a good step for us. That doesn't mean it will be automatic next time, but I have to give those guys credit. The win was lopsided, but that's what it needs to be - that's what it's about. For the most part, our guys can feel good about tonight's performance, but we can definitely build on this."
The Hawkeyes, who picked up their 47th straight dual win and 20th consecutive victory in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, collected 29 takedowns on the evening, allowing just one for the Panthers. It was the third time this season that Iowa pinned six opponents in a dual, duplicating their efforts against Iowa Lakes and Southern Illinois Edwardsville at the Iowa City Duals on Nov. 20. Iowa decked seven opponents that day against Cornell College.
Hawkeye redshirt freshmen Matt McDonough (125) and Nate Moore (133), sophomore Montell Marion (141) and senior Brent Metcalf (149) gave the Hawkeyes a convincing 24-0 lead with their pins. Metcalf had a 14-2 lead over Trevor Kittleson before recording the fall in 3:49 and improving to 9-0. The Hawkeye senior 149-pounder has seven pins this season and 38 in his career. He only needs two more to break into Iowa's top 10 career pins list.
Junior Aaron Janssen took Iowa into the intermission with an 11-1 major decision over Tyson Reiner at 157. It was Janssen's 15th career win and his first major decision of the season.
Seniors Ryan Morningstar (165) and Jay Borschel (174) got the Hawkeye fans back on their feet with second-period pins, giving Iowa a 40-0 lead. Morningstar led 1-0 going into the third period before recording the fall over David Bonin in 5:32. Major decisions from seniors Phillip Keddy (184) and Chad Beatty (197) built the Hawkeye lead to 48-0. Keddy recorded the most takedowns of the night (6) in his 14-5 win over Andy O'Loughlin, while Beatty tallied five takedowns in his 15-5 victory over Dustin Bauman.
Northern Iowa's Christian Brantley recorded the Panther's only win and takedown of the night, scoring a 3-2 decision over Hawkeye sophomore Blake Rasing at heavyweight to end the dual.

Hawkeye junior Brent Metcalf has earned a spot on the 2009 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I all-academic team.
IOWA CITY, IA -- Hawkeye junior Brent Metcalf has earned a spot on the 2009 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I all-academic team. He is one of eight NCAA finalists, 17 all-Americans and 51 NCAA qualifiers honored on the national team.
“Brent Metcalf is a leader on our team both academically and athletically," said University of Iowa Head Wrestling Coach Tom Brands. "Earning a spot on this team is one more example of his commitment to the University of Iowa and our wrestling team.”
To be considered for the NWCA all-academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, have been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule when he competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. Wrestlers can also earn a spot on the all-academic team if they were an NCAA all-American and posted a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.
Metcalf, who has been named to the NWCA all-academic team for the second straight season, earned his second all-America honor and Big Ten title at 149 pounds in 2009. He was named Big Ten Championships Outstanding Wrestler for the second time, becoming the first wrestler in conference history to earn the honor in consecutive seasons. He posted a 37-1 season record in 2008-09, going 24-0 in dual matches and 8-0 in Big Ten duals. He pinned 20 opponents, which ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. The two-time academic all-Big Ten honoree led the team in eight statistical categories in 2008-09.
Metcalf and the Hawkeyes are set to open the 2009-10 season November 20 with the Iowa City Duals.
