Waterloo, Iowa - Two-time All-American Travis Paulson captured 74 kg. freestyle and Greco-Roman titles and redshirt freshmen Nick Gallick and Mitch Mueller claimed freestyle crowns at 60 and 66 kg. to qualify for the World Team Trials at the Northern Plains Regional in Waterloo. Paulson captured outstanding wrestler honors in Greco-Roman competition while Mueller was named the outstanding wrestler in freestyle. 2006 recruits T.J. Sebolt and Mark Kist also recorded freestyle titles in the junior division.
Paulson, who was fourth in freestyle and eighth in Greco-Roman, respectively, at University Nationals in Evanston, Ill., registered a crucial quarterfinal victory over former Minnesota three-time All-American Jacob Volkman, winning by decision, 3-0, 1-0. Paulson toppled Northern Iowa's Moza Fay in the finals, 6-1, 6-0. Paulson joins his brother Trent who qualified for the World Team Trials with a 74 kg. freestyle championship at University Nationals.
Gallick, who redshirted this season, defeated UNI wrestlers Brett Robbins in the finals and Kyle Anson in the semifinals. In April, Gallick qualified for the championship bracket at the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas at 60 kg. in the senior division.
Mueller, who recently placed third at the FILA Junior Nationals helped by a consolation semifinal victory over former four-time Iowa state champion Dan LeClere (North-Linn) at 66 kg., defeated another Hawkeye, this time Iowa's 157-pound two-time All-American and 2005 NCAA runner-up Joe Johnston by a 1-0, 4-3 decision in the semifinals. Mueller topped W.R. Groves (Olympic Training Center), 1-1, 4-4, 1-0 in the finals.

Paulson Claims Freestyle Title at University NationalsEvanston, Ill - Two-time All-American Trent Paulson downed former two-time Missouri All-American Tyron Woodley in the 74 kg. finals to claim a freestyle title at the University Nationals Sunday and qualify for the World Team Trials in Sioux City. Paulson qualified for the World Team Trials last year in Ames by winning a 74 kg. Greco-Roman title at the 2005 University Nationals. Redshirt freshman Jake Varner and Kurt Backes registered third-place finishes at 84 and 96 kg., respectively, while 125-pounder Nick Fanthorpe and two-time All-American Travis Paulson placed fourth at 55 and 74 kg in freestyle.
"It's probably the biggest tournament I've won," Trent said. "I beat an NCAA finalist in the quarterfinals (Arizona State's Brian Stith), a national champion in the semifinals (Stanford's Matt Gentry) and a two-time All-American in the finals (Woodley). I'm going to keep working out with Travis. He pushes me better than anyone, along with (Cyclone Wrestling Club) coach (Tony) Ersland and (ISU assistant coach Tim) Hartung so I can be ready for the World Team Trials."
Trent Paulson began a tough stretch against two-time Arizona State All-American and 2006 NCAA finalist Brian Stith in the quarterfinals, but toppled the Sun Devil, 2-1, 3-0. Paulson defeated Stith collegiately in the 2004-05 season and will be ranked behind Stith as they begin their senior seasons at 157 pounds. Paulson proceeded to down former Stanford 2005 NCAA champion Matt Gentry in the quarterfinals, 0-1, 2-0, 2-2. In the finals Paulson squared off against the former Big 12 champion Woodley and won, 1-1, 0-1, 1-1. Paulson grabbed third-place honors in Greco-Roman at 74 kg.
Varner advanced through the 84 kg. bracket in impressive style, defeating two-time Purdue All-American Ben Wissel for third and Oklahoma's Josh Weitzel (NCAA qualifier at Michigan), in the consolation semifinals.
Backes was untouchable through
the 96 kg. bracket, scoring two technical falls and a pin before
running into former Ohio State 197-pound All-American J.D. Bergman.
Other than in the Bergman match, Backes did not allow a point.

consolation semifinals, 7-0, 2-0, before garnering third place
honors over Hudson Taylor, 2-0, 4-0.

Paulson Looks to Defend Greco-Roman Title as Cyclones Compete
at University NationalsTwo-time All-American Trent Paulson will lead Iowa State at the University Nationals in Evanston, Ill., April 28-30 in a quest to qualify for the World Team Trials. Paulson, who also placed in fourth in freestyle, was the 74 kg. Greco-Roman champion last year and will compete in freestyle along with his brother Travis, also a two-time All-American. Members from ISU's top-ranked recruiting class of 2005 will also be competing in freestyle. The top two placewinners in Greco-Roman and freestyle advance to the World Team Trials May 27-28 in Sioux City.
"With Greco, I'm really confident especially since I won a title last year and I hadn't really prepared for it for two years," Trent Paulson said. "I'll be with Travis competing in Greco and freestyle so I won't be alone. Vegas is a good warm-up but is a lot tougher than University Nationals. Cael's had practice structured for the postseason and everyone will be ready to go."
Iowa State is coming off a performance at the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas where former 2004 ISU NCAA champion Zach Roberson toppled defending U.S. Nationals freestyle winner and World Team member Michael Lightner at 60 kg. Former three-time All-American and 2006 national champion Nate Gallick placed third at 60 kg to qualify for the World Team Trials. Nick Gallick earned a spot in the championship bracket after competing in the qualifying 60 kg. competition. Redshirt freshmen Mitch Mueller and Nick Fanthorpe placed third and seventh, respectively, at 66 kg. and 55 kg. at the FILA Junior Nationals.

Sanderson Adds Brother Cody to Iowa State Wrestling StaffAMES, Iowa -- Cody Sanderson, a two-time 133-pound NCAA finalist as an Iowa State wrestler who has been the head wrestling coach at Utah Valley State the last three seasons, has joined the Cyclone coaching staff as associate head coach. The staff addition was announced Friday by ISU head coach Cael Sanderson, Cody's younger brother. Cael Sanderson hired former Iowa assistant coach Tim Hartung earlier this month.
"People who know Cody will be thrilled by his addition to our coaching staff," Cael Sanderson said. "He knows Iowa State but has also been a head coach the last three seasons and will bring unique experience to the wrestling room. Cody is smart. He is driven to be successful. Ultimately, he is someone I trust and respect. He did a lot to help our wrestlers during his time in Ames. Our wrestlers will attest to his contributions.
The only wrestling coach that Utah Valley State has known, Cody Sanderson built the Wolverine program in Orem from scratch starting in 2003. His team won six its last seven dual meets this season.
"I am anxious and excited to return to Ames," Cody Sanderson said. "Iowa State University has been great to my family. Coaching at UVSC was a very unique experience. Forming a new Division I wrestling team has, at times, been especially challenging. Because of those challenges, I feel that I am better prepared to help Iowa State wrestlers reach their goals."
Cody Sanderson grew up with brothers Cael and Cole in Heber City, Utah. He wrestled for his father Steve at Wasatch High School. Cody Sanderson was a four-time state champion, two-time junior national champion and his high school's valedictorian.
Cody Sanderson's Iowa State credentials include: two-time NCAA runner-up, two-time All-American, Big 12 champion, Big 12 Most Outstanding Wrestler honoree, four-time NCAA Tournament qualifier, Midlands champion and two-time academic all-American.
Sanderson wrestled at Iowa State from 1996-2000. He finished his career with 116 wins, ranking 17th on the all-time ISU win list. He made the NCAA 133-pound championship match as a junior (1999) and as a senior (2000), posting a 62-9 record his last two collegiate seasons. He was also the Big 12 133-pound champion his senior season.
He served as captain of the Cyclones in 1999 and 2000 for lSU head coach Bobby Douglas. In 1999, Iowa State finished fourth at the NCAA Championships and a year later finished second nationally. Sanderson also wrestled internationally for Coach Douglas.
Cody Sanderson wrestled for the USA national team. He was a Sunkist International Open champion, runner-up at the Dave Schultz International Open and a three-time University national champion.
His coaching career began where his collegiate career ended, at Iowa State, where Sanderson served as an administrative assistant before heading for Utah Valley State.
Sanderson served as the Cyclone Wrestling Club coach for three years, where his teams competed in the University National Championships, United States national championships, United States World Team Trials, Junior World Team Trials, and the Espoir National Championships. Sanderson has also assisted with the Utah National Team for the past seven years and is a certified Bronze Level Coach with USA Wrestling.
Sanderson earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State in psychology.
Cody married his wife Sarah on July 17, 1999 in Hudson, Wisconsin. They met at Iowa State where Sarah was a member of the ISU gymnastics team. Together they have a son, Kade and a daughter, Tylar Ann.

Cyclone
Wrestlers Prep for U.S. Nationals and FILA Junior Nationals
Las Vegas, Nev. - A host
of past and present ISU wrestlers will compete at the U.S. Nationals
and FILA Junior Nationals April 12-15 at the Las Vegas Convention
Center. Six Cyclones will be competing in freestyle while five
others will see action at the FILA Junior Nationals. The top seven
in the senior freestyle bracket earn All-American status and qualify
for the World Team Trials in Sioux City May 27-28. Former ISU
125-pound three-time NCAA qualifier Grant Nakamura earned a spot
at the World Team Trials and after placing first at the Rocky
Mountain Junior and Senior Regional Championships in Laramie,
Wyo. at 55 kg. at the end of March.
"This is a chance to make a statement to the nation about
where we stand as a program," Iowa State head coach Cael
Sanderson said. "We have young talent and successful alumni
and this is a platform to get more experience."
Former ISU national champions will be looking to make their mark
as 2006 NCAA champ and three-time All-American Nate Gallick and
2004 NCAA champion Zach Roberson returns at 60 kg. Gallick is
ranked second in the latest USA Wrestling freestyle rankings and
Roberson rates fifth. Gallick finished runner-up at last year's
U.S. Nationals and the 2005 World Team Trials in Ames. Roberson,
who captured a bronze medal at the Dave Schultz Memorial International
in Februrary, registered a third-place finish in Las Vegas last
year. Gallick knows the road to the finals isn't easy.
"The top eight are always tough and it's not easy to get
through the early rounds," Gallick said. "If you don't
come in with the mentality to win, you'll get picked off by a
weaker seed. This is the first tournament that my brother (Nick)
and I have wrestled in at the same weight class and I wish him
all the best."
Roberson was a three-time All-American during his stellar career
at Iowa State and is looking to improve on a fourth-place finish
he earned at the 2005 World Team Trials.
"I think the more you wrestle freestyle, the better you're
going to get at it," Roberson said. "My defense and
tie-up offense have gotten a little better since last year. It's
going to be a tough weight and someone told me that (former Oklahoma
two-time NCAA champion) Teyon Ware might be there but I'm ready
to go."
Nick Gallick will also be competing at 60 kg. and the former Amateur
Wrestling News All-American just completed a successful redshirt
season. Nick, projected to compete to replace two-time NCAA qualifier
Jesse Sundell at 133 pounds next season, spoke about the adjustments
he's made since winning four state titles at Sunnyside High School
in Arizona and the level of talent he'll be facing.
"Everyone is a lot harder to score on in college," Nick
said. "They position themselves better, they're stronger
and quicker. This will be a different level of competition for
me and the best wrestlers in the nation will be there. It will
be a great learning experience and help me get to the next level
where the best are. I'm going to work hard all summer to be ready
for next season."
Two-time All-Americans Trent and Travis Paulson will be competing
at 74 kg. along with 2005 freestyle All-American David Bertolino.
The Paulsons, fresh off their third NCAA Championships appearance,
feel that conditioning will be an asset.
"We've trained collegiately and freestyle is in shorter spurts
and not as intense," Travis said. "I've wrestled in
freestyle and Greco-Roman my entire life."
Trent, who placed fourth at the 2005 and 2006 NCAA Championships,
captured a Greco-Roman title at the University Nationals in Evanston,
Ill., last year to qualify for the World Team Trials.
"This will be another opportunity to get some freestyle experience,"
Trent said. "After training collegiately, I feel conditioning
will be a strength. Our team will be very strong next year because
coach (Sanderson) has brought in the best talent from the country."
Bertolino placed seventh at the 2005 U.S. Nationals with a 2-1,
3-2 win over NYAC's Nate Patrick and surprised himself as he advanced
through the 74 kg. bracket.
"I felt like I was on a runner's high," Bertolino said.
"Last year I didn't go in with a lot of pressure on me and
I got on a roll. I wrestle a lot shorter and harder in freestyle.
I go 110%."
2005-06 starter Ben Hanisch, a first-team Academic All-Big 12
selection at 125 pounds, will be competing at 55 kg.
"I've got to go in with the mentality to win just like any
other match," Hanisch said. "Cutting weight won't be
a problem for me. I'm trying to improve conditioning, takedowns
on my feet and technique."
One of the most host heralded recruits in the country from Bakersfield,
Calif., in 2005, Jake Varner, will be testing the freestyle waters
at 84 kg. after making a splash at the 2005 FILA Junior Nationals
by finishing runner-up and serving as a member of the 2005 FILA
Junior Freestyle World Team that went to Lithuania. Varner scored
five pins in five attempts during his redshirt year.
"You've got to go in with the mentality to win," Varner
said. "I've been training with older guys and I'm trying
to work hard and do everything I can to prepare. I'm excited to
have Coach (Sanderson) and Tim (Hartung) out there because when
you look in your corner you know you're in good hands."
Redshirt freshmen Nick Fanthorpe, Mitch Mueller, Joey DeMarie,
Joe Curran and David Zabriskie will also be competing in the FILA
Junior Nationals in freestyle April 14-15.
Fanthorpe, a two-time Illinois state champion from Naperville,
placed in the top-five in three open touranments during his redshirt
year and compiled a 12-7 record. Fanthorpe placed seventh in freestyle
at the 2004 Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D.
"There will be a lot of good guys in my bracket," Fanthorpe
said. "I'm expecting to see the best kids in the country
out there and I've been working hard in the practice room on a
couple of rule changes."
Mueller has had success on both the freestyle and Greco-Roman
circuits, evidenced by his freestyle crown at the 2005 National
Junior Championships and freestyle and Greco-Roman titles at the
2005 Western and Rocky Mountain Regional.
"I wasn't too happy with my redshirt year but I made some
improvements," the former two-time state champ at Iowa City
West said. "I like freestyle and have a lot of experience
with it. I'm really looking forward to next season because we'll
have a real tough team and contend for a national title."
Curran wrestled as a true freshman at 197 pounds, taking over
for two-year starter Trevor Smith, and scored five falls.
"My confidence gets boosted with every win," Curran
said. "I've faced some of the best competition in the country
(conference All-Americans Rosholt, Flaggert, Padden) so I won't
be intimidated when I step out on the mat. In practice we've been
working a lot on takedowns from the feet because there's no top
or bottom in freestyle."
Zabriskie, a New Jersey state champion, also redshirted this season
and is expected to compete to start at heavyweight next year.
"Guys are so much bigger and stronger on the collegiate level,"
Zabriskie said. "I was able to use my strength to my advantage
in high school but guys are just as strong or even stronger here.
This tournament will be pretty tough but I'll wrestle to the best
of my ability and learn a lot about freestyle.
At last year's U.S. Senior Nationals, ISU brought home five freestyle
All-Americans and former assistant head coach Chris Bono, now
at Tennessee-Chattanooga, won a title at 66 kg. Bono carries a
No. 1 ranking into U.S. Nationals. Nate Gallick was runner-up
at and Roberson registered a third-place finish at 60 kg. Bertolino
and former Iowa State four-time NCAA qualifier Nick Passolano
placed seventh and fifth, respectively. At the 2005 FILA Junior
Nationals, ISU's redshirt freshman Cyler Sanderson placed fourth
a 66 kg. and Jake Varner was runner-up at 84 kg. The World Team
Trials will be held at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City,
Iowa.

Wrestling Recruits Sebolt and Reader Receive Dave Schultz High
School Excellence AwardsStillwater, Okla. - Iowa State wrestling recruits T.J. Sebolt (Centerville, Iowa) and Jon Reader (Davison, Mich.) were the recipients of the prestigious 2006 Dave Schultz High School Excellence awards Wednesday presented by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. The annual award is given to high school seniors who demonstrate excellence in wrestling success, scholastic achievement, character, citizenship and community service. Sebolt and Reader have combined for seven state championships and career records of 438-7.
"Sebolt and Reader are two important pieces of the puzzle to elevate the Iowa State wrestling program to the top," head coach Cael Sanderson said. "I'm proud of their accomplishments and this honor is a great way to foreshadow a sign of things to come on the collegiate level."
Sebolt became the 17th wrestler in Iowa high school history to win four state titles with a 9-3 decision in his Class 2-A 130-pound final over Zach McCool of Manchester West Delaware. Sebolt wrapped up his highly decorated career with a record of 207-1 including a state mark 137 falls. Sebolt also had a record prep win streak of 192 matches and was ranked second in Amateur Wrestling News' lastest high school rankings at 130 pounds. He is projected to redshirt next season.
"This award caps off my career in a nice way but college is here now and it's time to move on," Sebolt said. "My goal is to win open tournaments and get stronger in my redshirt year."
Reader capped off a phenomenal career at Davison High School under head coach Roy Hall claiming his third Michigan state title to finish with a career mark of 231-6. Reader completed an undefeated senior season with a 60-0 record, pinning 53 consecutive opponents. He was recently named "Mr. Michigan Wrestler of the Year" by the Michigan Wrestling Association. Reader joined former teammates Brent Metcalf (Virginia Tech) and Nebraska All-American Paul Donahoe by earning the in-state honor. Reader is ranked second at 152 pounds in AWN's rankings. Reader is expected to redshirt next season.
Three ISU redshirt freshmen won the Dave Schultz award last season as high school seniors, Jake Varner (California), Nick Gallick (Arizona) and Cyler Sanderson (Utah).
The award is named in honor of Olympic and World champion Dave
Schultz who was inducted in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame
and Museum in 1997.
Gallick

Gallick
Closes Career as National Champion
Iowa State national champion and three-time All-American Nate Gallick closed out his stellar career with a 3-2 win over his rival, Teyon Ware of Oklahoma, in the 141-pound finals at the 76th NCAA Wrestling Championships Saturday evening in Oklahoma City at the Ford Center. Gallick finished his senior season with a perfect record of 35-0 and a career mark of 106-23. Gallick's win over Ware marked the eighth time in nine attempts he has defeated the Sooner. Iowa State finished tied for 13th with Northwestern in the team race with 48.5 points. Oklahoma State captured its fourth straight team title with 122.5 points followed by runner-up Minnesota with 84 points.
The top-seeded Gallick met the No. 2 seed Ware for the ninth time in the pair's storied rivalry. Ware received a standing ovation from the in-state crowd as the Sooner hails from Edmond, Okla. Gallick struck early on a single-leg in the first period and fought off Ware's attempt to shake loose and scored the first points on a double-leg for an early 2-0 advantage. Ware followed with an escape and another escape to begin the second period to tie the match at two. After Ware was cautioned to open the third period from the top position, Gallick exploded from the bottom for an escape and a 3-2 lead. Gallick was warned for stalling towards the end of the third period but Ware was unable to get a clean shot in a final flurry as Gallick took the match, 3-2.
"I tried to take a nap today but I just couldn't do it," Gallick said. "Every time I closed my eyes, I was shooting or avoiding being taken down. "I have a great amount of respect for Teyon (Ware). Every time we have wrestled it has been close. The first takedown in matches between us has been so important. A year ago, (Ware) got the first takedown (in Ware's 2005 NCAA final victory over Gallick) and then got some riding time on me. It changed the whole match and took me out of my game."
Gallick's only loss to Ware came in the finals at last year's NCAA Championships. Ware scored the match's only takedown. Gallick had placed second and fifth previously in the national tournament prior to winning his national title.
"Not winning a national title has given me a lot of motivation to come in and get it done," Gallick said. "This is my last year and it was my last chance to win one."
Gallick and Ware are reknowned for their epic extra-session matches and clashing defensive styles.
"My defense has always complimented my offense and it is real important for me to stay in good condition," Gallick said. "I try not to wrestle when I'm behind. If you get scored on you get put into a position that you have to score and not make any more mistakes."
Head coach Bobby Douglas thought the plan he had for Gallick worked to perfection.
"Nate's quick third period escape was planned well in advance," Douglas said. "We had been wrestling this match in our heads for a full year. Nate remembered that back flip (Ware did a back flip after winning the 2005 NCAA title against Gallick. Nate wrestled a perfect match."
Douglas and assistant head coach Cael Sanderson brought in the nation's best recruiting class last season and says the future is bright.
"We have a very promising group of young men, including Nate's younger brother (Nick) who have redshirted their true freshmen seasons," Douglas added. "They were the No. 1 wrestling recruiting class. That looks great on paper but those guys will be the heart of our program for years to come."

Gallick
a Finalist and Paulsons Become Two-Time All-Americans at NCAA
Wrestling Championships
Oklahoma City, Okla. - Top-seeded Nate Gallick defeated Michigan State All-American Andy Simmons, 4-2, in their semifinal match and Trent and Travis Paulson became All-Americans for the second time in their careers at the 76th NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City Friday evening at the Ford Center. Gallick, undefeated at 34-0, will face his conference rival Teyon Ware from Oklahoma in Saturday's 141-pound finals. Oklahoma State widened their lead over runner-up Minnesota (72.5) with 106 points as Iowa State moved up to 14th place with 41 points.
"I am proud of how our guys fought back," said Iowa State head coach Bobby Douglas. "This is an unforgiving round. There are a lot of guys who leave tonight heartbroken. To see Travis and Trent work their way back through the consolations and feed off of each other is a great thing. Nate came right out tonight and did what he had to do. He has one match left in his career and he knows what he has to do."
Gallick struck early in the first period for a quick takedown about a minute into the first period. Simmons deferred to begin the second period and Gallick chose down. The Spartan couldn't hold Gallick down as the three-time All-American escaped to take a 3-1 advantage. Both were tagged for a double stall warning as the second period expired. Simmons was down to begin the third-period and escaped to close the lead to 3-2. Simmons and Gallick went into a wild scramble but no points were exchanged shortly after the Simmons escape. Gallick accumulated 1:52 of riding time to win the match 4-2 and will meet Oklahoma's two-time national champion Teyon Ware in the 141-pound finals. Gallick has beaten Ware twice officially this season and defeated the Sooner at the NWCA All-Star Classic in Stillwater. Gallick has seven career wins against Ware in eight attempts. Gallick wanted an early takedown against Simmons.
"I knew if I could get an early takdown it would force him to wrestle a different match," the three-time All-American said. "Getting riding time forced him out of his gameplan even more." Gallick is preparing for a rematch of the 2005 national finals against Ware. "I'm not looking to do anything different," Gallick said. "He is a great wrestler and the past doesn't mean much. Every time I wrestle him, there's no easy train of thought. He's a tough competitor. No matter how many times I beat him, he's a threat."
Trent Paulson was taken down one minute into the first period by Oregon State's unseeded Tony Hook who denied No. 2 seed C.P. Schlatter of Minnesota All-American status in the wrestlebacks. Paulson escaped and tied the match with a second-period escape and added a takedown to take a 4-2 lead on Hook. Paulson gave up a reversal with 20 seconds remaining in the third period but came from behind with a five-point move in the waning seconds to defeat Hook 10-6.
The two-time 157-pound All-American was then set for a 2005 NCAA consolation rematch with Indiana's All-American Brandon Becker at 157 pounds. Becker, just a sophomore, scored the first points with a takedown but Paulson countered with an escape and takedown of his own to take a 3-2 lead. Paulson and Becker went into a scramble and the Cyclone two-time All-American added a two-point near fall and took a 5-3 lead heading into the third session. Paulson escaped to begin the third period for a 6-3 advantage and held on to advance further in the wrestlebacks and will face Derek Zinck of Lehigh who fell in the quarterfinals to Arizona State's finalist Brian Stith.
"It is a heck of a lot better to go for third than finish eighth," Trent Paulson said. "A lot of the motivation is pride. I have fed off the success of my brother. He has been an inspiration to me and the perfect workout partner."
Travis Paulson rematched against Missouri's Matt Pell for the third-time this season looking for revenge. After a scoreless first period, Pell escaped in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Paulson pulled a reversal on Pell in the third period to take a 2-1 lead and Pell escaped to equalize the match. Paulson scored a takedown with six seconds remaining to avenge two losses to the Tiger and win, 4-2.
Travis followed his brother's act as he went on to face Iowa's All-American Eric Luedke at 165 pounds. Paulson scored a takedown and two-point nearfall to open his match against the Hawkeye. Adding an escape to begin the second period, Luedke tried to rally and scored a takedown but Paulson scored one of his own off the edge of the mat with a minute to go and took the match 8-3. Travis faces American's Muzaffar Abdurkhamanov tomorrow in the wrestlebacks.
Seventh-seeded Kurt Backes reacquainted himself with Penn State All-American and No. 5 seed Eric Bradley in the 184-pound consolations. Bradley scored two first-period takedowns and Backes escaped twice and once to start the second period to make the score 4-3. Bradley would add another takedown from the neutral position in the third period and Backes tied it up with takedown of his own as the third-period wound down but a technical violation for locked hands on Backes resulted in one point for Bradley to give the Nittany Lion a 7-6 victory.
The fifth session begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

9 ISU Wrestlers To Face No. 24 Northern Iowa
Cedar Falls, Iowa - The ninth-ranked Iowa State wrestlers (8-4, 0-0) will head to Cedar Falls on Sunday to take on in-state rival Northern Iowa (2-6-1) at 2 p.m. in West Gym. The Cyclones are coming off a performance at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals last weekend. That effort included a win against Northwestern and losses to eventual champion Minnesota and Missouri. Sunday's dual will be aired live on Iowa Public Television.
"This will be a big for match for us as a team," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "They have a good team and we match up really well. It will be a very close meet."
ISU's two-time All-American Nate Gallick (141) paces the team with 22 wins and is only four victories away from reaching the career century mark after going 3-0 at National Duals. Gallick defeated Panther NCAA qualifier C.J. Ettelson last year by way of a 13-2 major decision.
The Panthers, who arguably have the toughest schedule in the nation facing the likes of Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Central Michigan, Wisconsin and Cornell, are led by seventh-ranked two-time NCAA qualifier Nick Baima (165) who paces the team in wins with 22. Baima was named the Midlands Championships' Outstanding Wrestler after capturing a title in double overtime against Illinois' Mike Poeta. The nationally ranked sophomore Ettelson (141) has posted a 20-6 record this season including falls over Illinois' All-American Cassio Pero and Central Michigan's 12th -ranked freshman Brandon Carter.
The Cyclones lead the school series, 45-17, with the last meeting a 25-16 ISU triumph at Hilton Coliseum in 2005. ISU stays on the road to face No. 8 Oklahoma (5-3) and No. 2 Oklahoma State (9-1) Jan. 28-29.

"We're getting good mat time. Those who wrestled tonight wrestled well. Overall, we had a good performance," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "Virginia Tech has great potential in the future and we're going to have to wrestle very well when we face them next."
After opening the dual with a forfeit at 184 pounds, true freshman Joe Curran recorded his third pin in four appearances at Hilton Coliseum with a fall at the 4:11 mark over Tech's Matt Woods at 197 pounds. Curran improved to 5-1 in dual action and notched his fourth pin of the year.

The Cyclones won six matches, recording a pin and two major decisions en route to the victory.
"Cal Poly is a good team, they came in with a good game plan," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "I am happy with our performance; it was good, but we obviously have work to do."
Backes, rated fifth at 184 pounds, began the second period from the defensive position against sixth-ranked Ryan Halsey. During a flurry which saw both wrestlers on their back, Backes was able to free himself from Halsey and score a reversal at the 1:22 mark. After the reversal, Halsey's back was exposed to the mat. Five seconds later Backes registered the pin, giving ISU a commanding 16-3 lead.
Backes' fall capped off four straight victories for the Cyclones. At 157 pounds, fourth-ranked Trent Paulson earned a 16-6 major decision over Ryan Williams. Travis Paulson (165) and David Bertolino (174) followed with 6-1 and 10-5 decisions, respectively. Jesse Sundell won by forfeit at 133 pounds. To close out the dual, ISU's second-ranked All-American Nate Gallick notched a major decision over Steve Esparza, 16-7.
The Cyclones will next be travelling to the 43rd Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., Dec. 29-30. Gallick will be defending his 2004 title at 141 pounds. Backes (184) and Travis Paulson (165) finished second in their respective weight classes last season, while Trent Paulson claimed a third-place finish at 157 pounds.
Wrestling action will return to Ames on Jan. 5, when Iowa State will play host to the Hokies of Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.
No. 7 Iowa State Hosts No. 23 Cal-Poly
AMES, Iowa - The seventh-ranked Iowa State (3-2, 0-0) wrestling team will return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. against No. 23 Cal-Poly (2-0, 2-0) in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones last met the Mustangs in the during the 2003-04 season, with ISU winning, 18-16. Iowa State leads the all-time series, 10-2. Former Iowa State NCAA champion and four-time All-American, Joe Heskett (1998-2002), is an assistant coach for Cal-Poly.
The Cyclones are looking to snap a two-dual losing streak after suffering losses to both Iowa, 20-15, and Minnesota, 21-13. ISU was upended by the Golden Gophers last week in Minneapolis, but got wins from second-ranked Nate Gallick (141), No. 6 Travis Paulson (165), No. 5 Kurt Backes (184) and true freshman, Joe Curran (197). Gallick (10-0) and Paulson (14-0) remain undefeated, while Curran improved to 4-0 in dual action.
Cal-Poly defeated Portland State, 39-6, Wednesday to improve to 2-0 in both dual and Pac-10 action. The Mustangs have five ranked wrestlers, Chad Mendes (125), All-American Darrell Vasquez (133), Jeff Owens (149), NCAA qualifier Ryan Halsey (184) and Matt Monteiro (197).

7 Cyclone Wrestlers Upended by No. 5 Minnesota, 21-13
Minneapolis, Minn. - The seventh-ranked ISU wrestlers fell 21-13 against the fifth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers Friday evening at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. The Gophers snapped a three-dual losing streak to the Cyclones and improve to 6-0 on the season. Iowa State is now 3-2.
"It was a battle of skills and wills," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "Minnesota showed why they're one of the top teams in the country."
ISU's second-ranked two-time All-American Nate Gallick remained undefeated at 141 pounds, using four first-period takedowns to major decision Minnesota's Manuel Rivera, 15-5, in the opening matchup. Gallick, 10-0 on the season, tech. falled Rivera last year in Ames and now has 84 career wins.
Iowa State's sixth-ranked 2004 All-American Travis Paulson topped Minnesota's fourth-ranked All-American Matt Nagel at 165 pounds, 3-1. Paulson registered a decisive takedown as the second period expired and nearly put Nagel on his back. Nagel had beaten defending national champion Johny Hendricks of Oklahoma State earlier this year at the NWCA All-Star Classic.
At 184 pounds, Kurt Backes used a strong 1:03 second period ride and a takedown at the end of the second period to improve to 2-0 in his career against sophomore Gopher NCAA qualifier Roger Kish, winning by a 6-3 decision.
Joe Curran had a 4-1 decision at 197 pounds against Golden Gopher Mitch Kuhlman to improve to 6-4 in his freshman season. Curran, now 4-0 in duals, was coming off of the dual's only pin against Iowa on Adam Fellers.
With the Cyclones trailing 18-13 heading into the final match, Cyclone senior NCAA qualifier Jesse Sundell was matched up against Minnesota's third-ranked All-American Mack Reiter at 133 pounds and almost pulled the unthinkable. With Sundell trailing in the second period, he pulled a reversal and three-point near fall and nearly pinned Reiter. Reiter recovered in the third period and prevailed by a score of 14-8 to clinch the dual.
The ISU/Minnesota dual will be aired Sat. Dec. 10 on Fox Sports Net North at 5 p.m. CST. The Cyclones will be back in action Sun. Dec. 18 when they play host to Cal Poly at 2 p.m.

State Wrestling Inks Three in Early Signing Period
Iowa State wrestling head coach Bobby Douglas announced the signing of three student- athletes to National Letters of Intent at the close of the Fall 2005 early signing period.
Douglas signed two in-state recruits, T.J. Sebolt (Centerville, Iowa) and Mark Kist (Eagle Grove, Iowa). He also signed Jonathan Reader (Davison, Mich.).
Reader, ranked 11th overall by Intermat, has a career record of 171-6. Reader was a teammate of Brent Metcalf, the nation's No. 1 recruit last year. Metcalf and Reader helped guide Davison to three Div. 1 Michigan state team titles. Reader is ranked No. 2 at 160 pounds in Amateur Wrestling News' high school rankings and head coach Roy Hall has Davison currently ranked 23rd in AWN's Prep 40 high school teams. Reader was the only high-school participant at the Harold Nichols Open in November when he wrestled unattached for Sunkist Kids. He finished runner-up to Iowa State's top-ranked Trent Paulson at 157 pounds. He is projected to wrestle at 157 or 165 pounds at Iowa State.
Reader is a two-time high school Michigan state champion and three-time conference champion. He placed third in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the 2005 FILA Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D., where current Cyclone freshmen Mitch Mueller and Cyler Sanderson captured titles. He was the freestyle runner-up in 2003 and 2004 at Fargo and was fourth in 2003 in Greco-Roman. Reader is a two-time FILA Cadet National Champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman and was chosen as the Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2005. He has compiled a 55-0 record the last three seasons (2003-05) at the Cadet National Duals.
Sebolt, a three-time Iowa state champion, was a 2004 ASICS Tiger All-American first-team member selection at 103 pounds in a group that included Oklahoma State All-American Coleman Scott, Minnesota's Dustin Schlatter, Illinois' Mike Poeta, and Oklahoma State's Nathan Morgan, all of whom are nationally ranked. Sebolt was a 2005 Central Junior Regional Freestyle champion and a 2002 Freestyle All-American. In 2003, he was a Junior Freestyle national champion. Sebolt is ranked No. 1 in the Predicament's Preseason Class 2A Iowa high school rankings and is Intermat's No. 50 overall recruit. Sebolt is ranked fourth in AWN's high school rankings and has a career record of 151-1 at Centerville. He is projected to wrestle at 133 pounds for ISU.
Kist, a two-time Iowa state champion at Eagle Grove, is ranked
third at 112 pounds in AWN's high school rankings. Kist
captured a title at the 2005 Junior Nationals in freestyle and
is ranked No. 1 at 112 pounds in the Predicament's Preseason
Class IA Iowa high school rankings. He is listed at No. 139 in
Intermat's recruiting rankings and was undefeated at 42-0
in his junior season. Kist is projected to wrestle at 125 pounds
for the Cyclones.
Knipp

Fourth and Fifth
Iowa State's Jason Knipp captured the 149 pound title at the UNI Open Sunday in Cedar Falls while freshmen Mitch Mueller and Nick Fanthorpe placed fourth and fifth, respectively, at 141 and 125 pounds. Knipp, who finished third at the 2004 UNI Open, also captured his first Harold Nichols Open title in November. The junior from Waterloo is now 13-3 this season.
"I was very pleased with this tournament," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "Our freshmen made tremendous strides and really impressed me."
Knipp blazed through the 149 pound bracket, compiling a 5-0 record during the tournament. Seeded fifth, he upset the top-seeded Dave Espinosa from Missouri in the semifinals and beat Purdue's Mark Powell in the finals, 8-3.
Mueller, an Iowa City native who finished third at the Harold Nichols Open, scored six wins in the tournament including two major decisions and defeated three different wrestlers from North Dakota State. The former Amateur Wrestling News All-American is now 15-5.
Fanthorpe, who also finished third at the Harold Nichols Open, also scored two major decisions as he improved his season record to 9-5. The Naperville, Ill. native topped Wisconsin's Kyle Ruschell, 8-7, in the fifth-place match. Fanthorpe beat Iowa's Trent Goodale and Upper Iowa's Tyler Mumbulo earlier in the tournament.

7 Cyclones to Battle No. 5 Hawkeyes
AMES, Iowa - The seventh-ranked Iowa State wrestlers (3-0, 0-0) will host fifth-ranked Iowa (1-0, 0-0) Friday at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones topped the Hawkeyes, 19-16, last year for their win in Iowa City since 1977 and their first ever victory in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa State has won the last two duals between the respective schools and will meet Iowa for the 70th time in school history.
"We hope there will be a large crowd on Friday," Head Coach Bobby Douglas said. "The Hawkeyes are talented and we will be tested at every weight."
ISU has recorded wins over Upper Iowa, second-ranked Div. III Wisconsin-LaCrosse and Utah Valley State and captured a combined six titles between the Harold Nichols Open and Kaufman-Brand Open. All-Americans Nate Gallick (141), Trent Paulson (157), Travis Paulson (165) and Kurt Backes (184) are all unbeaten, combining for 34 wins.

Wrestlers to Compete at Kaufman-Brand Open
The seventh-ranked Iowa State wrestlers will be competing at the annual Kaufman-Brand Open Saturday at 9 a.m. in Sapp Field House on the University of Nebraska-Omaha campus. ISU is coming off a strong showing at the Harold Nichols Open where Nate Gallick (141), Jason Knipp (149), Trent Paulson (157) and Travis Paulson (165) captured titles. True freshmen Nick Fanthorpe (125) and Mitch Mueller (141) placed third while Ben Hanisch (125) and David Bertolino (174) finished fourth.

Bertolino, who is 5-1 this season and picked up a technical fall against Utah Valley State in his 2005-06 debut, is the only returning placewinner after finishing third at 174 pounds at the 2004 Open. Bertolino topped Hostra's nationally ranked Paul Siemon in a 3-1 sudden victory battle in the third-place bout and went 6-1 in the tournament.
Two-time All-American Nate Gallick (141) and 2004 All-American Kurt Backes (184) will not compete.
The Kaufman-Brand Open is a final tuneup before the Cyclones host Iowa in Hilton Coliseum Dec. 2

Knight Accepts New Assignment with the Cyclone Wrestling Club
Ames, IA. Steve Knight has recently been named Executive Director and Club Coach of the Cyclone Wrestling Club, the support arm for the Iowa State University wrestling program.
Knight's duties as Executive Director will include building membership, sponsorship and coordinating special events for the Cyclone Wrestling Club. Knight will also work with wrestlers to continue their careers beyond college while training for international competition and expand the regional training site concept. Iowa State wrestling has been designated as an official USAW Regional Training Site.
"I'm excited to be back in Cyclone country and I'm honored and proud to be a part of this program again. I have great memories here. My wife and I are also pleased to be back around family," said Knight this past week from the Iowa State campus.
"We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to hire someone with Steve's experience and background, " stated Jeff Murphy, Cyclone Wrestling Club president. "Coach Douglas and his staff are doing a great job of bringing the best wrestlers in the nation to Iowa State. Our top mission at the Cyclone Wrestling Club is to provide those wrestlers with the opportunity to pursue their post collegiate wrestling goals, and the addition of Steve Knight will help us to achieve that mission.
Steve Knight received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Iowa State University. He was an Iowa State NCAA All American and Big 8 Champion at 126lbs. He went on to win the 1992 Pan American Championships at 136.5lbs. He wrestled on the US Freestyle circuit through 1992 competing both nationally and internationally. He was also a five time Senior National Freestyle All American while competing for the Cyclone Wrestling Club.
Knight was an assistant coach for three seasons at Iowa State under Head Coach Jim Gibbons. After finishing his competitive career, he and his wife settled in Colorado.
For the past ten years, Steve was the Head Coach for Team Excel, a USA Wrestling club that competed on both the Senior Olympic freestyle level as well as the Junior level. Team Excel has seen much success in 10 years with many Senior level All American performances. On the junior level, Team Excel wrestlers earned 62 High School State Championships with many of these wrestlers going on to wrestle on the college level. Two wrestlers from the program have achieved Division I NCAA All American status.
Knight has been a member of the USA Wrestling National Teams coaching pool for 12 years. He is a USA Wrestling bronze level certified coach and has lead many teams abroad. He was the Head Coach of the US Pan Am team in 2004 that won the Freestyle Pan American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In 2005, he coached the US World Cup team to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He has served on two US Olympic Coaching staffs in 2000 and 2004. He also worked for two years with the Australian National team coaching in two World Freestyle Championships in 1998 and 1999.
In Colorado, Knight was also the founder of the Colorado state
chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was instrumental
in developing USA Wrestling's very first Junior Olympic Program
model that is currently being utilized today in several states.
Knight is also a committee member for the USA Wrestling Federation
of Clubs board. Steve and his wife Kristin have three children,
Evan 13, Colby 11 and Mackenzie 9.

Plentiful Among World Team Trials Contenders
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State assistant coach Chris Bono (Sunkist WC) and two-time Cyclone All-American Nate Gallick are among nine current or former ISU grapplers who will take part in the freestyle 2005 World Team Trials, June 18-19 in Hilton Coliseum. All-session tickets are $60 for adults and $35 for youth high school age and younger. Several wrestlers with Iowa or Northern Iowa ties will also be wrestling. There will also be competition in Greco-Roman and women's freestyle action. Winners will qualify for the World Wrestling Championships Sept. 23-Oct. 3 in Budapest, Hungary.
The initial rounds for all styles of competition begin at 9 a.m. and end around 1 p.m. Challenge matches will start at 5 p.m. Consolation semifinals and third-place matches will start at 6 :30 p.m. World Team Trials final matches (best of three) will begin July 19 at 10 a.m.
"Bringing the nation's top wrestlers to Central Iowa affirms the Iowa State University tradition of NCAA, U.S., international and Olympic achievement," said Iowa State and Olympic coach Bobby Douglas. "The meet is filled with Iowa State wrestlers and competitors that the people of Iowa know. This is a special place in wrestling history so I think it's appropriate that we bring the World Team Trials to Ames."
Heading the list of likely ISU participants is Bono, the U.S. 145.5-pound freestyle champion and a former NCAA champion. The 2004 NYAC Christmas Open winner was a member of the 2003 U.S. World Cup teams and captured the 2002 and 2003 U.S. titles. His bracket includes Jared Lawrence of Minneapolis, Minn. (Minnesota Storm WC), whom Bono defeated 1-0, 1-1, 1-0 for the U.S. 145-pound crown last month in Las Vegas, Nev. Lawrence is a former NCAA champion at Minnesota. World team member, former Iowa All-American Bill Zadick (Gator WC), and Northern Plains Regional champion and former Iowa national champion Cliff Moore (Hawkeye WC) will be in this bracket.
"Some of my greatest memories are of wrestling in Hilton Coliseum," Bono said. "There are so many highlights. I'm very lucky to get a chance to wrestle here again a decade after my collegiate career ended. I know we will have great support."
Gallick, the 2005 NCAA runner-up at 141-pounds, placed second to Michael Lightner of Norman, Okla. (Sunkist Kids WC) at the U.S. National Championship at 132 pounds last month. Gallick won the 2004 Sunkist Kids International competition in Tucson, Ariz. Also competing at 132 pounds are former ISU national champion Zach Roberson (Sunkist Kids), who was third in the national tournament last month and was the 132-pound title winner in the NYAC Christmas Open. Former Iowa State four-time All-American Eric Akin (Dave Schultz WC) is in the same weight class with former Iowa All-American Mike Zadick (Hawkeye WC).
"Hilton Coliseum is my wrestling home," Gallick said. "I'm really looking forward to competing in Ames. There is a comfort level there. I want to thank everyone who made this event in Ames possible."
Matt Azevedo (Sunkist Kids), a former Iowa Stater, placed second in the 121-pound weight class at the U.S. Championships. Azevedo was the 2004 Sunkist Kids International champion and won the individual champion at the Dave Schultz Memorial meet. Former Iowa All-American Luke Eustice (Hawkeye WC) is in the same weight class.
"It's exciting for me personally to have the 2005 U.S. World Team Trials in Ames," said U.S. National freestyle coach and 1992 Olympic champion Kevin Jackson.
Jackson was an NCAA finalist
on Iowa State's NCAA championship team in 1987.
"I have so many great
memories from that city and from Iowa State University,"
Jackson said. "In a sense, the success of my career began
in Ames, and with a lot of our Olympians stepping away from the
sport after the 2004 Games, a lot of other great careers are expected
to be born in Ames this year. I can't think of a better place
for the U.S. World Team Trials to be held than in Ames, the center
of the sport of amateur wrestling in the U.S. Wrestling fans in
Iowa are some of the best in the country as are the competitors.
With the great success that Bobby Douglas has brought to Iowa
State in the last decade, it's exciting to think of the atmosphere
that will surround this year's World Team Trials."
At 163 pounds former Iowa Stater Nick Passolano (Sunkist WC), former ISU national champion Joe Heskett (Gator WC), ISU All-American Travis Paulson (Cyclone WC) will battle against former Iowa national champion Joe Williams (Sunkist Kids), the 2005 U.S. champion.
Iowa State's David Bertolino (Cyclone WC) will compete at 185 pounds in a bracket that includes former Iowa national champion Lee Fullhart (Gator WC) and former Hawk All-American Tyler Nixt (Gator WC).
"Fans are going to see great wrestling," said ISU assistant coach and 2004 Olympic champion Cael Sanderson. "Wrestling fans in our state are knowledgeable and I think they'll enjoy seeing the different kinds of wrestling being contested It will be very exciting."
Iowa State assistant coach and former All-American Zach Thompson will compete at 211 pounds against a field that could include Iowa assistant coach Tim Hartung (Minnesota Storm) and UNI All-American Sean Stender.
In Greco-Roman competition, former ISU heavyweight Mark Knauer is slated to compete.
