James

Hutchens Wins Home Coaching Debut
HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/11/05) - Redshirt junior heavyweight Chris
Cvitan's
(Montville, N.J./Montville Township) 6-2 decision capped a James
Madison
University comeback and pushed the Dukes past visiting Franklin
& Marshall
College, 22-20 Tuesday night in non-conference college wrestling
at JMU's
Godwin Hall. The Dukes tallied 19 unanswered points to make first-year
head coach Josh Hutchens' home debut a success.
"It feels great, but most of all I'm just really happy
for the guys,
especially the way they did win," said Hutchens, who also
picked up his
first overall coaching victory in the Dukes' seventh match of
the
season. "We messed up a little early, but coming back like
that will give
them some confidence in the future."
The Dukes overcame a 20-3 deficit, bolstered by back-to-back
pins from
senior Brian Lambert (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and sophomore
Jason
Chalfant (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville). It marked the first fall
in the
career of Chalfant and the first of the season for Lambert.
Lambert made quick work in his bout, pulling the Dukes to within
20-9 just
1:33 into his 174-pound standoff. Chalfant's came with 1:49 remaining
in
the third period, although he was well on his way to a major decision
with
a 12-3 lead in the 184-pound match.
"We got behind early, so I told them that I expected it
out of them," said
Hutchens when asked if he was surprised with the consecutive
pins. "Originally, we are just going out as hard as we can
and not
particularly looking for the pin, we are always trying to get
it, but not
focusing completely on that. We got into a situation where that's
what we
had to focus on. I told them to go get it, and they did."
Junior Brian Kibler (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) got the Dukes
on the board
with a late surge in the final period in the 141-pound contest.
He scored
five quick points, a takedown and three on a near fall, to go
from a small
deficit to a 10-6 victory. Kibler was trailing 5-4, but had riding
advantage heading into the final period. He released his opponent
to go
down 6-4 before turning the tide.
Sophomore Zach Winfrey (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) had an equally
important 9-1 major decision at 197 pounds with the Dukes down
20-15 and
two bouts remaining. Winfrey scored a takedown and accumulated
more than
three minutes of riding time in the first two periods for a 5-0
lead. He
posted two more takedowns in the final period for the final margin,
gaining a bonus point that wasn't crucial in the win, but gratifying
just
the same.
Franklin & Marshall's Michael Parziale (Woburn, Mass./Woburn)
raised his
season's record to 15-4 with a major decision in the 157-pound
division.
He's ranked 19th this week by the National Wrestling Coaches
Association/InterMat Division I Coaches Poll. Trent Dixon (Baltimore,
Md./Eastern Tech) scored bonus points with a fall at the 125-pound
match
after trailing early in the first period by a 4-1 margin.
The Diplomats, a Division I program from the Eastern Intercollegiate
Wrestling Association, fell to 2-4 with the loss. They are coached
by
Pete Schuyler, who was the head coach at JMU during the 1986-87
season.
The Dukes will host George Mason on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 2
p.m. in a
Colonial Athletic . Admission is free and the match will be held
in
Sinclair Gym of Godwin Hall. F&M heads down to Hampton, Va.
for the
Virginia Duals, Jan. 14-15.
