No. 14 Lehigh Narrowly Escapes Drexel's Upset Bid, 21-19
Philadelphia, Pa.
- Drexel dropped a tough match to No. 14 Lehigh, 21-19, in the Dragons' final regular season dual meet of the season. Drexel ended its season 20-9 while Lehigh improved to 12-5-1. The 20 wins mark a new school-record for victories in a season.

Lehigh jumped to a 10-point lead on the first three matches of the evening. Lehigh's Matt Fisk used a second-period escape to earn a 1-0 decision over Steve Mytych (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) in a match-up of freshman 125-pounders. Lehigh's Jon Stout and Cory Cooperman followed with a pair of decision victories, the latter a major decision. Facing a 10-point deficit, the Dragons looked to junior Chris Renninger (Cresonia, Pa./Blue Mountain) to get them back in the match. Renninger responded with his 10th pin of the season at 3:33 of the match. In the next match, 19th-ranked Ryan Hluschak (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) recorded a win by fall of his own when he matted Trevor Chinn at 4:18. Hluschak has now won 16 of his last 17 matches. The two wins by fall put Drexel on top, 12-10.

Lehigh countered with former NCAA national champion Troy Letters at 165 pounds. The senior defeated Drexel's Scott Hunter (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), 17-3, to give the Mountain Hawks a 14-12 match lead. Lehigh also won at 174 and 184 pounds, the latter by major decision to extend its lead to 21-12. At 197 pounds, Drexel's Jon Oplinger (Bath, Pa./Northampton) stunned 16th-ranked Matt Cassidy when he earned a 16-6 major decision to pull Drexel within five points with just one match remaining. Defending CAA heavyweight champion Chris Cowen (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) faced Lehigh's heavyweight offering, Kevin McFarland, who usually wrestles at 197 pounds. Cowen earned a pair of takedowns and was awarded a point when McFarland was cited for stalling but was unable to record a pin. Cowen did win a 7-0 decision, though the Mountain Hawks escaped with a 21-19 match win.

Drexel will host the 2006 CAA Championships on March 3 and 4. The first match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 3.

Lehigh Wrestling Club Press Release

When Lee Roy Smith and Stan Zeamer visited us for the LU-Okla St dual--and attended our luncheon where Lee Roy spoke--they asked if the Lehigh Wrestling Club would send a report if we successfully reached our goal of 1,000 members. We're happy to report that we did, quite an accomplishment for the 'little Engineer that could'--with ugrad enrollment still no bigger than 4,500. FYI, 700 students also attended that day--the biggest total at Lehigh in two decades ... thanks to all for your shared enthusiasm in something that means so much both locally and nationally! Best regards,DD

The 2004-05 wrestling season was as exciting for Lehigh's fans as it was for their team, each setting records that will be difficult to break. Thanks to the leadership of Dick Moll, LU '61, and his "band of Board brothers" (which included his highly organized wife, Camille) the Lehigh Wrestling Club set a new record for membership (1014), most events (11), biggest turn-out (340 at NCAAs) and total attendance of over 1,600 guests. It was a superb effort on all fronts, from coaches and wrestlers to board members, volunteers and fans around the globe.

The announced goal of 1,000 members for the Club's year ending April 1 used a theme of "Thousand Member March to March." It was hardly a unanimous decision, with some saying "it couldn't be done." But Membership Coordinator Dave Setzer insisted it could and he's smiling more than usual these days. Using a team of volunteers organized by decade--which included a good number of alumni wrestlers led by 3-time All-American Rick Hepp '95--the fans were asked to join. Again and again--at every event, in emails and on the Club's now popular website which will begin its 4th year this Summer (<http://www.lehighwrestling.com/>http://www.lehighwrestling.com/).

The diversified calendar included a pre-game football tailgate with parents & wrestlers and included three bus trips to away duals, including an overnight outing to Penn State and Pitt and three dinners (all three over 200 guests), including after the EIWA and National Championships. At the NCAA Finals, the Club outgrew the Hard Rock Cafe last March (when 260 squeezed into the restaurant), so the heated outdoor tent solved the "problem" in 2005.

How hard was the goal to reach for the club which is a quarter century old ? By comparison, the membership a year ago was 717 and for 2002 was in the low 300's. The intense and organized planning and promotion no doubt helped Lehigh smash its former record for a home dual, when 5,828 attended to help honor the visit by #1 Oklahoma State. The old record was 5,150 for Syracuse in 1981.

Thus, the Club and overall Brown & White loyalty helped Lehigh rank 3rd in the nation in average attendance (2,458). Two of those home duals featured wins over this year's #2 and #4 teams, Michigan and Cornell. That was one of several new records set by the team and their coach, Greg Strobel--last year's National Coach-of-the-Year. The dual wins over #2, 3 and 4 were two more vs. Top 4 teams than in any of Lehigh's prior 95 seasons.

Everything you need to know and perhaps a bit more ......
Since you already know by now who won, let's run some numbers on "why" Lehigh edged Cornell to claim their 4th straight team title. The early assumption for CU's slight edge was "more place winners" since they had all 10 men seeded top five and Lehigh had a 7th seed and one not seeded at all. It was surely "bonus points" by the more aggressive Mountain Hawks that would re-claim the title, right?

Not quite true, since each team had 13 bonus wins, giving the Brown & White just a 19-17 lead in bonus points (by seven Engineers to six Big Red wrestlers). For the record the breakdown turned out to be significant, with LU nailing five WBF's to three for CU:

--------MD--TF--F
Lehigh----9---0---5
Cornell---8---2---3

Was it the Cinderella 4th place finish by LU junior, Brian LaMay ? (that's an update from Brian, who turned down enrollment from Stanford 4 yrs ago to come to Bethlehem? Well, yes, in a way--since it was 7 places above his pre-seed of 11th, although that was a technicality from the Committee's dismissing his 14-3 record two weights lower. He went 4-2 to prove skeptics wrong. Yet when you assess net ups & downs off seeds (assigning a "9" for unknown non-seeds), Cornell essentially eliminated all but one point from the spread:

The truth--while Coach Greg Strobel had his team and fans in stitches at the Sat. night dinner by singling out every team member for being "the" biggest reason for the win--both teams wrestled remarkably close to their seeds in an increasingly competitive league. However, going back to LaMay and adding Andrew Rizzi, here's some math: the two scored an amazing 16.5 points (11.5 for LaMay and 5.0 for Rizzi), over a dozen more than the Seeding Committee figured.

Then add 5th-seed, Matt Anderson, who with a WBF and two majors (the latter two vs. #3 and #6), managed an incredible 15.5 points all by himself. By going 4-1 with the three bonuses, he chose a great time to hit his peak: he's now 10-2 since Jan. 22 and his 3rd place bout was a torrid 13-2 major decision over nationally 18th-ranked John Cox of Navy. The bout raised Matt's career mark over John to 3-0 (6-2 in last yr's dual; 9-6 in EIWA quarters).

By comparison, Cornell's 5th-seed at 141 (the Ivy's next Secretary of Defense, Jordan Leen) also bumped up from #5 to a 3rd place to score 10.5 for CU, while Penn's Doug McGraw was knocked down from #3 to #5 at the same weight, scoring 9.0 for the Quakers. The biggest point "jumper" for the Big Red was soph #6 Joey Hooker at 165, who scored 9.5 pts vs. the 6 pts scored by Paul Weibel for his 6th at Hwt (4.5 in some other examples, such as Penn's Rich Ferguson at 165).

Bottom line (among many): Lehigh stole Cornell's script for projected places won--by remaining the league's only member since 1987 to place all 10 men, vs. CU's nine. While a stunning achievement yesterday, it's the 3rd time in four seasons for the Mountain Hawks (joining '02 and last year). In the 40 Easterns from '66 through now with 10 weights, it's been done eight times: the other five were by five schools once each: '74-Navy; '75-Pitt; '77-Lehigh; '81 Syracuse and '87-Army.

The proud Lehigh tradition thus becomes the first program in the league to claim two streaks of four straight or more: the only other time (five straight from 1931-35) came when the school paper nicknamed the school the "Engineers," perhaps to distinguish it from the publication itself (The Brown & White).

Notes: Strobel lamented one thing about rushing to complete the consolation finals by late afternoon; this year 8 semi-final losers lost their next bout, putting them into the match for 5th/6th and reducing their shot at qualifying for NCAAs

Concerning the furor in the stands over wild cards, while Roby will conduct research on the 5-yr pattern for W.C. selections and NCAA results, for now there is no "there" there. By coach's admission--along with EIWA Editor J. Harmon--this year's selection meeting was largely w/out controversy.

The two most unique weights for wild card review were 184 and Hwt--the former a relatively weak weight nationally and the latter a solid one. While Army's Luke Calvert was #13 nationally, he had a lacklustre tourney after returning from several weeks of injury. At Hwt, yes, Bode Ogunwole was a Rd of 12 last March placing 5th--but he, too, seemed listless at times, losing to unranked Tyler Shovlin. 19-12 on the year, losing in the tourney 9-2 to Weibel, who placed 6th for the 2nd year in a row. Shovlin lost for 3rd place to un-ranked Adam LoPiccolo.

THOUGHT FOR MIDDLE OF NIGHT: With the final score in the finals at 157 in the EIWA 14-13, which question is most relevant?

1.) Who was American's best wrestling in Annapolis ?
2.) Who was the best American wrestler at 157?
3.) Was there really a 'loser' in the bout ?

2005 FINAL EIWA BRACKETS

Annapolis, Md. -- Lehigh University won its fourth straight EIWA
championship, outscoring 11th-ranked Cornell, 133.5 to 131.0 to claim
its 32nd team title. Navy tallied 96.5 points for third place and will
send six wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament on March 17-19 in St. Louis,
Mo.

"I am just so proud of our kids the way they battled this weekend," said
Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. "We competed hard at every weight class
and gave a great effort in every match. I would like to recognize the
six seniors that provided great leadership all year long and really
helped give us a building block to where we want to go.

"It's a start for us," added Burnett. "Now, we just need to keep
building and keep getting stronger."

The Mids earned their first invitation to the national tournament when
senior Sam Gray placed third at 133 pounds. The Essex, Vt., native ran
his record to 26-10 with a 5-4 victory in overtime over Matt DeLorenzo
of Columbia. The 3-1 tournament run allowed the senior to reach the NCAA
Tournament after falling just short twice before. He also improved his
career record to 89-50, needing just two more wins to enter the Navy
career top ten wins list.

At 141 pounds, Navy earned its second straight bid with a second-place
showing by Nate Gulosh. Despite falling to Lehigh's Cory Cooperman,
14-1, in the finals, Gulosh garnered his second straight trip to
nationals. Gulosh now stands at 25-7 on the season.

At 149 pounds, John Cox gained one of the 12 wildcard bids handed out as
he finished fourth. Cox fell in the semifinals to eventual champ Phillip
Simpson of Army, 5-0, but defeated Kyle Bernholz of Penn in the medal
round to earn a top-four finish. Cox is now 24-8 on the season.

Craig Dziewiatkowski placed third at 165 pounds to earn an automatic bid
to the NCAAs. Dziewiatkowski defeated Joey Hooker of Cornell, 3-1 by
sudden-victory in the consolation finals to give the Mids their fourth
NCAA participant. Dziewiatkowski is now 29-11 on the 2004-05 campaign.

Navy's last two bids came at the two largest weight classes. Thayer
Paxton avenged an earlier loss to Army's Todd Wisman, knocking off the
Black Knights' 197-pounder, 4-0, to earn an automatic bid with a
third-place finish. Paxton sports a 31-5 mark heading into the NCAA
Tournament.

Lastly, at heavyweight, Tanner Garrett lost a heartbreaking 2-1 setback
to Penn's Matt Feast in overtime in the finals. Garrett advanced to the
finals with a 4-3 double-overtime victory over No. 7-ranked Bode
Ogunwole of Harvard, but ran out of time against Feast. It marked the
second straight year that Feast has defeated Garrett in the finals,
defeating him 4-1 the year before. Garrett is now 32-2 on the season.

Two other Mids, Pat Lukanich at 157 and Matt Stolpinski at 174, earned
sixth-place finishes.

Navy finished with eight placewinners and its third-place finish was its
highest since 1995.
