Maryland- WVU VA Tech results, Academic update, ACC wrestler of the week, Up next

This past weekend was a good test for us. It was the first dual competition in almost a month and we were facing two very tough teams on the road. The team responded well and came home with two wins.

The WVU match went back and forth in the first few matches, but we were able to build some momentum through the middle weights and secure the victory. Kyle John and Christian Boley led the way with a major decision and a pin respectively. Another highlight of the match was Freshman Geoffrey Alexander's win over a nationally ranked wrestler.

Go to http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/010712aaa.html for a full recap

We traveled from Morgantown to Blacksburg for our 2nd match of the weekend and first conference dual of the year. Va Tech has been the top dual team in the conference for a long time. They were riding a conference win streak of 16 straight over the last few years, so we knew it was going to be a battle. Similar to the WVU match the first few weights went back and forth and again strong performances by our middle weights solidified the win. Kyle John came up big with a pin and redshirt sophomore Jimmy Sheptock scored a 10-2 major decision to give us a comfortable. Redshirt sophomore Ty Snook's reversal at the end of the 3rd period secured the win.

Nine others joined Corey to receive Semester academic honors (GPA above 3.5). They are Seniors Brian Marcoux, Joey Boone, Kyle John and Owen Smith, Juniors Brad Molina and Aaron Norris, Redshirt Sophomores Alex Pagnotta and Danny O'Malley and Freshman Josh Polacek.

Maryland- Shorty Hitchcock results, Up Next NAVY and NC State

Last weekend a few Terps competed in the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic. It was a good event and they competed well. Two wrestlers placed in the top four. Freshman Conor Wetzel (197) and Sophomore Tony Gardner (184) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Freshmen Paul O'Neill (125) and Shane Arechiga (133) both advanced to the semi final round, but were force to withdraw because of injury.

For complete results go to http://www.millersvilleathletics.com/documents/2012/1/15/Final_Bracket.pdf

This weekend the varsity returns to action for two tough duals. Friday night we travel to Annapolis for a battle against Navy at 7.30pm. This is always a great match and this year will be no different. Navy has a few ranked guys but every guy that steps on the mat is ready to go hard for the entire match. If you are planing on attending the match, you will need to park either at the football stadium and ride the shuttle over to Alumni Hall or park outside of the Academy grounds and walk onto the Yard with a photo I.D. It's a pretty good walk so I wouldn't recommend that, but it is an option. Only vehicles with a DoD (Department of Defense) or handicapped sticker will be allowed to drive onto the grounds.

If you cannot make it to the match, it will be streamed online via Navy All-Access for free. The link to view is: http://www.navysports.com/allaccess/?media=290714

Sunday we get back to conference competition with a home match against NC State at 2pm in the Comcast Center Pavilion. The Wolf pack have a young but very talented team. This match is very important for us as a team and individually. After the match we will have a social in Heritage Hall on the 2nd floor of the Comcast Center. Football fans will be happy to know we have made arrangements to show the Ravens game during the social.

The team has been working very hard and everyone is excited for this weekend. We look forward to seeing a lot of fans supporting us this weekend.
Take care and thanks for your support,
Kerry

This was a very good event for our team. We finished the day 3-0 and won 25 out 30 individual matches. The most impressive thing about the weekend is the number of bonus point wins we had. This past weekend was pretty exciting for our team. Josh Asper and Spencer Myers traveled to Arizona to compete in the 46th NWCA All Star Classic. The event featured some very exciting matches. Spencer wrestled Flores for the 2nd time and wrestled a better match than the last time they wrestled. They both will use the experience to spring board to bigger and better things. We saw things that we are doing well and saw things that we need to get better at. It was great to have two guys be a part of such a great event.

University of Maryland-Season Kick off recap

The weekend was awesome. Although the weather was not great Saturday, we still have a great time at the Fish Fry Tailgate. We all huddled under a couple of tents and enjoyed the food and company. Getting recognized during the football game was pretty cool also. It's not too often that we get to see wrestling highlights on the giant screen in a football stadium, so it was a very memorable day.

The weather was better Sunday, and there was great crowd in the Comcast Pavilion for the Red and Black Wrestle Offs. Over 400 fans were in attendance to watch 15 great matches.

Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

John, Peltier named nwca All-academic
Maryland wrestling ranks in top-25 in team GPA
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Juniors Kyle John and Corey Peltier were named to the 2010-11 Division I Individual All-Academic wrestling team, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced today.
"It's very rewarding and exciting for our team to have the academic success tied to these athletic accomplishments," said head coach Kerry McCoy, who has guided at least one wrestler to the NWCA All-Academic team in each of his three seasons at Maryland.
John, a Civil Engineering major, recently was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar Athlete of the Year and picked up All-ACC honors on the mat after finishing runner-up at the conference championship at 157 pounds. A Coopersburg, Pa., native, John went 31-11 in his junior campaign, including a 15-4 mark in dual bouts.
Peltier, an Education major, earned All-ACC honors after winning the individual conference title at 184 pounds. >From Exeter, R.I., Peltier finished the year with a 22-10 record and, like John, was an NCAA qualifier.

In all, 92 individuals representing 44 schools are being honored on this year's All-Academic squad.
To qualify for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, and either been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule- and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. Those wrestlers who have at least a 3.0 GPA and were an NCAA All-American also qualify for the All-Academic team.
Maryland's John Named ACC Scholar-Athlete

Lederer, Peltier and Ruland join John on All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Maryland junior Kyle John has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and one of four Terps to make the 2010-11 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team, the conference announced today.

"I am very proud of guys' efforts," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "They do great jobs on and off the mats. For Kyle to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Year is awesome. He puts so much into school and it is great for him to be recognized for his effort."

John, a Coopersburg, Pa., native, also picked up All-ACC honors on the mat this season after finishing runner-up at the conference championship and qualifying for the 2011 NCAA Tournament. At 157 pounds, John was 31-11 on the year, including a 15-4 mark in dual bouts.
Maryland wrestlers have now earned Scholar-Athlete honors in three of the last four years, with Hudson Taylor earning the top honor in 2008 and 2010.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in 2007 to be awarded annually to the top upperclassmen student-athletes in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

A civil engineering major, John earned a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team for the second consecutive year.

John is joined on the academic team by three teammates: Dex Lederer (Sr.; Business Management), Corey Peltier (Jr.; Elementary Education), both two-time honorees, and Lou Ruland (Sr.; Biology).

To be eligible for the ACC All-Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Maryland's O'Malley, Monzey Place at FILA Junior Nationals

O'Malley earns runner-up in Greco Roman, qualifies for World Team Trials

CLEVELAND - Danny O'Malley placed second, Jenkins Monzey placed eighth and six other Terps competed in the FILA Junior National Championships last weekend.
"This weekend was a good event that gave our younger guys a chance to compete at a high level," said head coach Kerry Mccoy. "I am proud of our guys, especially Danny and Jenkins."
O'Malley, a native of Holbrook, N.Y., strung together three consecutive victories in the 66 kg pound Greco Roman bracket before falling (1-0, 0-2, 3-0) to champion Joseph Locksmith. Picking up national runner-up honors, O'Malley now qualifies for the FILA World Team Trials in May in Franklin, Ind.

In the freestyle bracket, Monzey clinched Fila Junior All-American status after topping Mike Rhone (1-6, 4-0, 3-1). In his true freshman season, Monzey finished 22-11, participating in open competition.

Also competing were Frank Goodwin (66 kg), Danny Orem (70 kg), Eric Beverly (74 kg), Justin Cash (74 kg), Ty Snook (84 kg) and Christian Boley (96 kg). In all, Terrapin Wrestling Club members went 16-14 on the weekend.

The champion in each Olympic weight class in May's team trials will represent the United States at the FILA Junior World Championships in Plaven, Germany in August.

Maryland Terps Finish in 18th at NCAA Championships

Aspers, Letts and Myers all claim All-American status

Philadelphia, Pa. - The University of Maryland wrestling team earned its third consecutive top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships Saturday as Josh Asper, Mike Letts and Spencer Myers earned All-America status, placing seventh or better at their respective weight classes.

"This weekend was very special for our program," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "It was our third top-20 finish in a row as well as well as our third consecutive year with multiple All-Americans. Our guys wrestled well and really showed a lot of heart and determination. I am very proud of all of our guys."

Asper (165), Letts (174) and Myers (Heavyweight) all finished in seventh-place or better at their respective weight classes after combining to win 14 matches over three days at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

Entering Friday's medal round, the trio of Terrapins already clinched All-America honors, the first since Hudson Taylor and Steve Bell claimed national honors in 2010.
Asper finished in sixth after dropping a tight 5-4 decision to seventh-seeded Shane Onufer of Wyoming while Letts finished in seventh after defeating sixth-seeded Ben Bennett of Central Michigan by a score of 7-2.

A true freshman, Myers won five straight matches before losing 2-0 to fifth-seeded Dom Bradley of Missouri in the consolation quarterfinals and 5-4 in the fifth-place match to Indiana's unseeded Ricky Alcala, whom narrowly advanced past Myers in their first-round action on Thursday.

With 35.8 points, Maryland finished in 18th place, after finishing at 20th in 2010 and 10th in 2009.
Maryland's Letts Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

Senior earns third conference honor of season

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mike Letts has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

A senior captain for the Terps, Letts finished the regular season with three convincing wins, two of which came against ACC opponents.

Letts pinned Duke's Brett Klopp in less than three minutes in Saturday's 48-0 dual-match win before traveling down Tobacco Road to score a 21-8 technical fall against Colin Genthert to help the Terps top No. 24 NC State 35-5 and improve to 4-1 in the conference.

After being honored on Sunday's Senior Day festivities in College Park, Letts improved to 15-2 in dual meets this season by pinning George Mason's Aaron Keeton in just 1:59. The Parkesburg, Pa., native has now won eight of his last nine matches and the Terps have won 11 of their last 12 dual meets.

The Parkesburg, Pa., native was also named ACC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, 2010.
Last Weekend of the Regular Season for Maryland

Three duals, Three wins

We closed out the regular season with a bang. In a little over 24 hours momentum from the last few weeks kept rolling with three convincing wins. Saturday we won two matches in North Carolina then returned to College Park to defeat George Mason Sunday. It was great to get the wins, but more importantly our guys wrestled really well. Sunday's match was bitter sweet. I was very happy with the results, but sad to see our seniors compete in their last dual meet.

Click here for <http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/021911aaa.html>results from NC and recap of <http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-wrestl/recaps/022011aab.html>George Mason.
National Collegiate Open

Also this weekend a few guys competed in the National Collegiate Open on the campus of Clarion University. The National Collegiate Open, as a true open tournament, allows for any post high school athlete wishing to compete in the collegiate style of wrestling to be able to wrestle. Additionally, the event provides a postseason type event for nonstarters and redshirting collegiate wrestlers. The following guys placed and earned All American honors: Jenkins Monzey 5th at 125, Joey Boone 5th at 133, Mark Hartenstine 5th at 141 and Danny Orem 157 6th at 157.

Maryland Terps Pick Apart George Mason Patriots, Win 42-3

Team finishes with 16-4 record, won 11 of last 12 duals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Capped by reserve heavyweight Tommy Sitar's 4-0 decision over Hunter Manspile, the University of Maryland wrestling team rolled over George Mason 42-3 on Senior Day in the team's final dual meet of the season.

No. 19 Mike Letts and Christian Boley each pinned their opponents on Sunday afternoon and No. 17 Jon Kohler, No.14 Kyle John and No. 3 Josh Asper earned bonus points for Maryland with major decisions as the Terps closed out the 2010-11 regular season with their 16th win overall and 11th in their last 12 meets.

"The guys are performing the way they should be at this point," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We have to keep this momentum going forward for the ACC tournament."

Senior Day honorees Pat Strizki and Lou Ruland got the momentum going to open the meet with back-to-back wins by forfeit, putting the Terps ahead by 12 before the clock struck 1 p.m.

At 141 pounds, Kohler shutout George Mason's Denny Herndon to earn the 9-0 major decision in the senior captain's final regular season bout. In the 174-pound matchup, Maryland's other senior captain Letts pinned Jimmy Kaden in under two minutes of action.

"I think [the senior captains] did a great job," said McCoy. "They are our captains and the leadership of our team was great. It was really bittersweet that we won't get to see them wrestle at Comcast again but they did a great job. Mike dominated the competition. Jon started a little slow but eventually got the ball rolling. It was a great all-around performance."

After Patriot Brandon Bucher picked up a decision over Dex Lederer for George Mason's first and only points on the day, Maryland responded with four consecutive bonus-point matches, starting with Lett's pin in just 1:59.
At 184 pounds, senior Bradley Nielson earned a 3-1 victory over Greg Scott to put Maryland up by 30.

Boley followed with a third-period pin, the redshirt freshman's first on the season, thanks to a perfectly executed takedown slam of Jimmy Webb.

In the final bout at heavyweight, Sitar got the starting nod and brought the crowd of over 500 to its feet by pulling off the 4-0 upset over George Mason's Manspile.

Maryland has nearly two weeks off before heading south to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2011 ACC Championships on Mar. 5. The Terps, who finished second in the conference behind No. 21 Virginia Tech will seek their third ACC Championship in the past four seasons.

"The biggest thing we have to focus on is getting better," said McCoy. "We have been wrestling well and right now we have some time off. We have to work hard on improving so we can win championships individually and as a team. All of their hard work is showing."

Maryland Terps Shutout Duke, Whip N.C. State

Maryland returns home Sunday to honor senior class vs. George Mason

RALEIGH, N.C.- The University of Maryland wrestling team earned a combined 10 wins by pin and technical fall as it clinched second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with dual wins on the road against Duke and North Carolina State Saturday.

"Today was a great day," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "The guys wrestled well and looked great. We scored a lot of bonus points which is important at this time. I am very proud of them."
McCoy and the Terps (15-4, 4-1 ACC) started Saturday's conference swing in Durham, N.C. against the Blue Devils (2-6-1, 0-5 ACC) in dominating fashion.

After Shane Gentry and Lou Ruland each won by forfeit, Maryland grapplers earned five consecutive wins by pin fall. No. 17 Jon Kohler, Ben Dorsay, No. 3 Josh Asper and No. 19 Mike Letts all pinned their opponents within the first three minutes of the opening period.
Corey Peltier and Christian Boley earned decisions at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to close out the 48-0 Terrapin shutout, the team's first of the season.

Riding the momentum from the squad's afternoon dominance, the Terps traveled down Tobacco Road to Raleigh to challenge the NC State Wolfpack (9-10, 1-4).

Coming off wins by forfeit, Gentry and Ruland used their fresh legs to rack up bonus points for the Terps in the first two matches thanks to 16-0 and 22-7 technical falls.

In the 141-pound match, Kohler trailed NC State's Darius Little late in the third before using an escape in the final 60 seconds and the one-point riding time advantage to force overtime. Twenty seconds into bonus time, Kohler successfully executed a takedown to earn the two-point win.
After Darrion Caldwell, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, earned the technical fall over Dex Lederer, Maryland countered with 14th-ranked John's 8-4 decision over Colton Palmer.

Asper and Letts each scored at least 20 points against NC State's Nijel Jones and Colin Genthert to pick up technical falls and increase the Terrapin lead to 29-5.

Boley and Spencer Myers pitched in a pair of decisions giving Maryland 18 combined match victories and the team's fourth conference win in 2011. The Terps have now earned at least four ACC wins in five of their last six seasons.

McCoy and the Terps return home Sunday to honor their senior class against winless George Mason at 1 p.m. in the Comcast Pavilion.

Maryland Comes Back Against Virginia, Win 19-16

With win, Maryland improves to 2-1 in ACC

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With Maryland trailing Virginia 16-15 heading into the final match, Spencer Myers earned an 8-0 major decision over Jack Danilkowicz, vaulting the Terrapins to a 19-16 win over the Cavaliers Friday night at the Comcast Pavilion.

Lou Ruland, No. 16 John Kohler, No. 14 Kyle John and No. 3 Josh Asper also earned wins to help Maryland improve to 2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference action and move into second place in the league standings.
v
"Virginia is a very good team and they are very well coached. It came down to the wire and that was the expectation," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I told the team we have to win the close ones. We were able to get some bonus points tonight and that was the difference."

The Cavaliers (15-7) struck first thanks to a Matt Snyder major decision over Pat Strizki to put the Terps (12-4) in a four-point hole.
v
Maryland countered, however, starting at 133 pounds as Ruland pinned Joe Spisak in just 1:31.
"That pin by Lou Ruland was huge," said McCoy. "When you go match for match, those bonus points make the difference."

Kohler earned a 9-3 win, his eighth consecutive, over Dave Ebbott to give Maryland a 9-4 lead.
At 149 pounds, ACC Wrestler of the Week Derek Valenti won a close 3-1 sudden victory over Maryland's Ben Dorsay to bring the Cavaliers within striking distance.

The Terps used back-to-back decisions by John and Asper to create an eight-point advantage heading into the most anticipated match of the night at 174 pounds, pitting Maryland's No. 19 Mike Letts against No. 4 Chris Henrich.

After a scoreless first period in which Letts, the senior captain, fought off several Henrich strikes, Letts brought the crowd to its feet by earning well over the one minute needed for a riding time bonus. Letts and Henrich exchanged escapes and, in the third, Henrich's series of shoots paid off as the fourth-ranked grappler finally took down Letts with just under 30 seconds remaining to take the 3-2 decision.

"[Henrich] is a returning All-American and is ranked fourth in the country. He has only lost one match and, ironically, it was against a guy Mike defeated," said McCoy. "Mike put himself in a position to win the match…We will learn from it and get better in time for the ACCs."

Virginia's 18th-ranked Jon Fausey topped Corey Peltier 5-3 and Stephen Doty defeated Dallas Brown to give the Cavaliers the one-point edge heading into the final match of the night, at heavyweight.
Just as he did on Jan. 29 against North Carolina, Myers, a true freshman, earned a major decision shutout, this time 8-0 over senior Jack Danilkowicz to clinch the Terrapin team victory.

"This is huge," said Myers. "To come out here and defeat a kid who qualified for nationals is huge for me. For the team, it keeps us rolling and keeps us on track for NC State and Duke. We are going to try to get three in a row here."

Maryland will travel to Washington, D.C. Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on No. 11 American before heading further south to Tobacco Road next weekend to square off against the Wolfpack and Blue Devils.

Maryland 19, Virginia 16

Maryland Terps Set for Tough Weekend Slate

Maryland plays host to Cavs Friday, travels to No. 11 American Sunday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After enjoying a week off, the University of Maryland wrestling team is prepared for a busy weekend in which it will play host to conference rival Virginia Friday at 6 p.m. before heading to Washington, D.C. to take on No. 11 American at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"This weekend will be very tough," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Virginia and American had pretty good seasons so far. We are working hard and getting better every day, so the opportunity to be challenged is something I am looking forward to. It will be a good test to see where we are and what we need to do to keep moving towards our goals."
v
McCoy and the Terps (11-5, 1-1 ACC) will welcome the Virginia Cavaliers (15-6, 2-1 ACC) Friday at 6 p.m. in a battle for second place in the conference behind No. 22 Virginia Tech.
Ranked for a majority of the season, Virginia has competed against six top-25 teams and has wins against then-No.25 Arizona State and No. 15 Kent State. The Cavs also boast a pair of grapplers whom are currently undefeated in the ACC including No. 4 Chris Henrich and No. 17 Mike Salopek at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively. Between Henrich and Salopek at 184 pounds is Virginia's third top-20 wrestler, No. 18 Jon Fausey who is 2-1 in the conference and 22-6 overall.
The Terrapins will travel just south to the nation's capital Sunday to challenge American at 1 p.m.
With five wrestlers ranked in Intermat's top-20, No. 11 American presents the Terrapins with a number of challenging matchups. With a perfect 20-0 record, Steve Fittery is the top-ranked grappler at his 157-pound weight class. Heavyweight Ryan Flores is currently No. 5 thanks to his five wins against top-20 opponents, including former second-ranked Jarod Trice of Central Michigan and Ryan Tomei of Pittsburgh.

With the weekend action several of Maryland's ranked grapplers, who are 13-12 against ranked opponents, will earn much-desired rematches.

In the first round of the Midlands Championship in December, then-undefeated Josh Asper suffered his first loss to American's Patrick Graham in a close 7-6 decision. Last season, Fittery topped Kyle John 9-0 in Maryland's dual with American.

In their last meetings, the Terps topped American 26-11 on the road before defeating Virginia 25-15 at home on Senior Day.

Virginia Tech Counter Maryland Comeback
Terps win four straight matches, lose lead at heavyweight

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior captain Jon Kohler upset No. 13 Chris Diaz at 141 pounds and the University of Maryland wrestling team won half its matches against No. 16 Virginia Tech, but the Terps ultimately fell just short, losing to the Hokies 18-17 on Sunday in the Comcast Pavilion.

The Terapins (10-4, 0-1 ACC) trailed by 11 after No. 8 Jesse Dong defeated No. 13 Kyle John at 157 pounds, but Maryland mounted an impressive comeback, winning the next four matches to take a two-point lead before Virginia Tech's David Marone pulled off a narrow 5-3 victory over true freshman Spencer Meyers at heavyweight.

"We [split our matches] with a top-5 team that finished runner-up at the National Duals," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "[Splitting] 5-5 is not bad. It's disappointing to lose a conference dual, though…Overall there were a lot of good things which we can build our momentum with. We just have to get better.
No. 5 Josh Asper started ignited the Maryland rally with a 9-1 win over No. 15 Pete Yates. Leading by six with a riding-time advantage, Asper earned a one-point near fall late in the period to earn the major decision.

At 174 pounds, No. 17 Mike Letts trailed Matt Epperly by one heading into the third period. The senior co-captain narrowly avoided a takedown and flipped Epperly to earn the takedown and, soon after, a three-point near fall to earn the 6-3 decision.

Coming off of a dramatic 4-3 upset of No. 8 Luke Rebertus at 184 pounds on Saturday, Corey Peltier topped John Dickson, 8-1, to cut the Hokie lead to just one point heading into the 197-pound bout.
Trailing by one, Christian Boley and the Terps had an opportunity to take the lead against Virginia Tech's Chris Penny. In what was a tight match from the opening minutes, Boley and Penny exchanged points throughout the first two periods with Penny holding a 7-6 lead heading into the third.

Down late in the final period, Boley escaped Penny's grasp and flipped forward to execute the takedown and the three-point turn with just 15 seconds remaining to take the 10-9 victory and give the Terps a 17-15 advantage.

"Christian Boley had a great match," said McCoy. "He was able to fight hard and get the win at the end."
Unfortunately, Maryland lost its fight and the dual in its final match when Marone topped Myers handing the Terps their first team loss since Dec. 11 at Hofstra.
Maryland resumes conference action Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Comcast Pavilion against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Hartenstine finishes in second at tournament

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.- Less than 24 hours after their dual win against Bucknell, members of the University of Maryland wrestling team competed at the Shorty Hitchcock Open, hosted by Millersville University.

Christian Boley and Spencer Myers claimed individual titles at the 197-pound and heavyweight classes, respectively, while Mark Hartenstine earned runner-up at 141 pounds.

"It was a good showing for our guys," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Spencer and Christian did great jobs, especially with the quick turnaround from the dual."

Both Boley and Myers competed in the Terrapins' dual against Bucknell just one night prior with Boley losing a close decision to Jay Hahn and Myers earning a 19-4 technical fall over Austin Fallon.

At 197 pounds, Boley opened and closed the Shorty Hitchcock Open with major decisions, topping Millersville's Daniel Cox 16-6 in the first round and shutting out Franklin & Marshall's Colin Ely 8-0 in the championship.

At heavyweight, Myers pinned Army Prep's Rodney Sharp in the second period and after stringing together three more victories, the true freshman handled Derek Papagianopoulos of Virginia 6-1 in the title bout.

Hartenstine finished in second at 141 pounds after losing in sudden victory to Virginia Tech's Zach Niebert in the championship match. Hartenstine, however, opened the day with back-to-back technical falls followed by a pin over Bloomsburg's Matt Hicks.

"Our guys wrestled tough and really fought hard tonight," said head coach Kerry Mccoy. "It was nice to see the things we were working on show up in our matches."

Maryland Terps Breeze by Brown, 38-15

Maryland finishes 3-0 on weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After defeating Boston and Harvard on Friday, the University of Maryland wrestling team continued its success as they squared off against the Brown Bears on Saturday afternoon. The Terps (8-3) topped Brown 38-15 by winning seven of their 10 matches on the day.
"Today was a good day. It was the best effort I have seen for our guys all year," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "It was a great way to finish the trip. We scored bonus points and got pins. That's a lot of fun to see. Ruland, Kohler, Asper, Peltier and Myers did a great job winning all of their matches. I look forward to building off this weekend."

After Brown earned the first points of the day with Billy Watterson's pin-fall of Pat Strizki at 125 pounds, the Terps answered quickly with a Lou Ruland decision at 133 pounds and a Jon Kohler technical fall over Brown's C.J. Howard at 141.

Maryland's Snook Takes Title at Wilkes

Hartenstine earns third, Terps combine for 19 wins

WILKES-BARRE, Pa.- Ty Snook won the individual title at 184 pounds and Mark Hartenstine placed third at 141 pounds as a number of University of Maryland wrestlers competed at the Wilkes Open, hosted by Wilkes University on Tuesday.

In all, nine Terrapin wrestlers combined for 19 victories in the tournament, nicknamed the Rose Bowl of Wrestling.

"It's great for our program. This is the first time in a long time that we've had a champ at this event," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I am very happy for those guys."
A redshirt freshman, Snook claimed his first tournament title by rattling off four consecutive victories, capped by a 12-4 win over Steven Cressley of Clarion. The Bear, Del. native, opened with a 3-2 decision over top-seeded Shawn Fausey of Drexel before handling Wilkes' Matthew Transue, 7-5. In the 184-pound semifinal match, Snook topped Pitt-Johnstown's Andrew Brentzel, 3-1 in sudden victory.

Hartenstine, a true freshman, took home third place at the 141-pound weight class thanks to five dominating victories. Hartenstine made his presence known in the opening match, topping Franklin & Marshall's Aaron Velasquez 16-0. After shutting out Garet Pisani of Clarion and Ryan Wilson of Wilkes, 5-0 and 7-0, respectively, Hartenstine lost his only match to Dave Cawley of Pitt-Johnstown in the quarterfinal round. Yet, the Easton, Pa. native rebounded with back-to-back victories of Justin Belanger of Sacred Heart and Kodie Silvesti of Nassau to take home third place.

With many of Maryland's starters currently participating in the 48th annual Midlands Championship in Evanston, Ill., the Terrapins will return to action on Jan. 7, when they travel to Boston University and Harvard for duals meets at 3 and 7 p.m., respectively.

Maryland Takes Two of Three at Northeast Duals

John, Asper and Letts all finish 3-0
TROY, N.Y. - The University of Maryland wrestling team won two out of three dual meets Saturday at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y., defeating Penn and Northern Iowa while losing to No. 13 Missouri.
On the year, the Terps improved to 5-2 in dual meets, including 3-2 against top-50 squads.

"We did a good job today," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We had some hard fought wins and a couple of tough losses, but all in all I'm happy with where we are right now."

McCoy and the Terrapins started the meet against at 9:15 a.m. against Penn. Down by six after two matches, Jon Kohler got the ball rolling with a 4-0 decision over No. 16 Zack Kemerer. Maryland went on to win the next six bouts, including No. 12 Mike Letts' 6-2 decision over No. 7 Scott Giffin, to take the met, 25-10.

Against Northern Iowa in the second round, Pat Strizki started strong for the Terps with an 11-5 decision voer Caleb Flores. Yet, the Panthers took the next two matches and created a quick 6-3 lead over Maryland. Ben Dorsay countered with a 4:07 fall over Jamal Lawrence to help the Terps retake the lead, 9-6, which followed by three consecutive victories for No. 18 Kyle John, Asper and Letts. Northern Iowa, however, racked up bonus points at 184 and then a 2-1 decision at 197 to keep things tight heading into the heavyweight match, featuring No. 15 Christian Brantley and freshman Spencer Myers. In order to retain the team victory, Myers needed to prevent a pin fall, which he did successfully, as he fought off Brantley to a respectable, 2-1 defeat, ensuring the Maryland win.

In the finale, No 13 Missouri presented a tougher challenge for the Terps with four top-20 ranked wrestlers. Missouri started things off strong, claiming the first four decisions. However, the trio of Maryland's ranked Terps John, Asper and Letts, along with Corey Peltier at 184, fought back with four straight decisions of their own to tie things up at 12 points apiece. Unfortunately, Maryland couldn't keep the momentum going as they lost the final two matches, including Myers' 2-1 defeat to No. 2 Dom Bradley.

Maryland Starts Strong at Terrapin Duals

Terps win three of four in season-opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team opened the 2010-11 season, by winning three of four duals at the Terrapin Duals Saturday at the Comcast Pavilion.
The Terrapins (3-1) opened the regular season against nearby Johns Hopkins (0-3) with a dominating performance which featured four pins and a technical fall shutout executed by No. 5 Josh Asper at 165 pounds.

"Overall it was a great day," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We won three matches and the fourth match was winnable...Our guys have to be ready for the grind and this is the best way to start."

Maryland then faced stiffer competition against West Virginia (2-1), which had topped Liberty, 24-12 in the prior match. Down 6-9 to the Mountaineers, Maryland put 14 quick team points on the board thanks to a pin by Kyle John at 157 pounds and back-to-back major decisions by Asper and Letts, who wrestled for the first time in nine months, since suffering a season-ending injury in the spring.

"The funny thing with Mike is he hasn't wrestled competitively since Jan. 12," said McCoy. "We just forget that because he has been so successful and has done so much. He looked great and he didn't look like he was rusty at all."

The 613 in attendance then witnessed arguably the most exciting match of the day with Christian Boley and Kyle Rooney at 197 pounds. Down late in the third period, Boley used two take-downs to top Rooney and clinch the team win, Maryland's second straight, over West Virginia.

Heavyweight Spencer Myers capped off the dual against the Mountaineers with a 10-0 major decision shutout, making the final score 27-13.

Against the Liberty Flames (3-1), the Terps were tested early and often. Maryland's Pat Strizki opened the game with a 4-1 decision over Jonathan Childress, but the Flames came back to win the next three decisions to put them up 9-3.

Maryland regained the lead with a decision by John, pin by Asper and technical fall by Letts, but Liberty once again fought back to reclaim the lead with decisions by Aaron Kelley and Aaron Thompson over Alex Pagnotta, who had moved up a weight class to replace the injured Corey Peltier. In the heavyweight bout, Liberty's Josh Pelletier claimed the injury default victory over Spencer Myer in the first period to give the Flames the team win.

In the Terrapins' final dual of the day, Maryland handled McDaniel (0-2), 40-3. With four major decisions, two pins and a suffocating 15-0 technical fall performance by Kyle John, the Terps out-muscled the Green Terror, winning all but one match.

"We're going to go over and watch everything that happened today," said Letts, who recorded two pins, a technical fall and major decision today. "You can either improve on it or you can't. And I think all these guys are willing to work just as hard to get that much better. We see what we need to do and now we need to take those steps."

Maryland will travel to the Buffalo Open in Buffalo, N.Y. tomorrow before hitting the road again for the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic and East Stroudsburg Open on Nov. 13.

Terps open regular season Nov. 6 with Terrapin Duals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team kicked off its 2010-11 season Saturday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion with the annual Red & Black Wrestle-Offs, won by the Black team, 17-12.

A crowd of 385 was in attendance to see this year's squad for the first time this season and fans were not disappointed with a number of entertaining matches from returnees Josh Asper, Kyle John and Mike Letts, along with several talented underclassmen.

"It was a good day," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I'm excited to finally get our guys out to a live event with referees and a crowd. This signifies that we've officially started."

The annual exhibition began with a close 125 pound contest between Shane Gentry and Pat Strizki. Tied at 6-6 in the third period, Gentry, a freshman out of Stafford, Va., used a two-point reversal to clinch the victory for the Red team.

"With Shane Gentry, we knew we got a stud when we got him," said McCoy. "He came in as a true freshman and battled a senior. That is always impressive when you get a freshman to show up [like he did]."

Joey Boone earned a tight 3-2 decision over Lou Ruland thanks to a third-period escape to tie the score at 3-3. Jon Kohler helped the Red team regain the lead with a 6-1 decision over Mark Hartenstine. The Black team then won two straight, as Justin Cash got a 3-2 decision over Eric Beverly and Kyle John took a 10-0 major decision over Danny Orem for a 10-6 lead.

In the 165 pound bout, Josh Asper successfully defended a last-ditch takedown attempt by Jimmy Sheptock to win, 2-1, and pull the Red team within one at 10-9. But Mike Letts used a 10-0 major decision over Alex Pagnotta to increase the Black team's lead to 14-9. At 184 pounds, Corey Peltier topped Bradley Nielson, 2-0.

With the Red team within two points at 14-12, heavyweight Spencer Meyers secured a victory for the black team by handling Ryan Gray, 5-0 to clinch the match.

On the day, there were also five exhibition matches, two of which went to sudden victory. Kenneth Collado topped Jenkins Monzey in a sudden victory overtime period, 7-3. Tommy Sitar used a takedown in overtime to top Owen Duffy, 3-1.

The Terps will open the regular season Saturday, Nov. 6 at Comcast Pavilion with the Terrapin Duals, featuring Johns Hopkins, West Virginia, Liberty and McDaniel.

"We're back here in two weeks," said McCoy, who enters his third season as Maryland's head coach. "Our [upcoming] dual meet is an opportunity to see if we can kickoff our season the right way."

Maryland Wrestling Looks to Carry Past Success Into 2010-11

terps look to carry past success into 2011
Former ACC Champs Letts, Kohler lead Terps into 2010-11

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For a program that has won two of the last three ACC Championships and finished in the top 20 at two straight NCAA Championships, one might expect that losing three All-Americans could change the expectations heading into a new season.

But Maryland expects the return of two former ACC Champions plus an influx of talented newcomers will propel them to another outstanding season in 2010-11.

Mike Letts, the 2007 and 2008 ACC Champ at 174 pounds, Jon Kohler, the 2008 Champ at 141 pounds, plus 2010 NCAA Qualifiers Josh Asper and Kyle John lead a talented group into Maryland's first season under head coach Kerry McCoy without an All-American returning.

Program stalwarts Steven Bell, Alex Krom and Hudson Taylor combined to earn All-America status six times during their illustrious careers and replacing them promises to be a challenge. But McCoy is confident this group will leave their own mark on the Terrapin wrestling program.

"Our expectations never change," said McCoy. "One of the reasons I came here is that I wanted to be a program that could challenge for a national championship. Winning the ACC is the goal every year and we want to be in the hunt at the NCAA Championships. We have a young team this year and there will be some new guys in the lineup that we have to see what they can do. But without a doubt, we have three or four guys that should get on the podium and help us be in the hunt for a top 20 finish."

Letts, a fifth-year senior who redshirted in 2009 and had his 2010 season cut short due to injury, is healthy this season and looks ready to return to his championship form. His progression will be key to a team that has relied on its veterans heavily in the past.

"Mike has the potential to win a national championship," said McCoy. "He has some monsters in front of him. He'll wrestle some very highly ranked wrestlers early on between the Oklahoma Gold Classic, the Northeast Duals and the Penn State Open. He could potentially see eight to ten ranked guys in the first semester. Without a doubt he's a top-five wrestler."

Asper just missed out on All-America status as a freshman at the 2010 NCAA Championships and is ranked as high as fifth in the nation by some wrestling publications. The Parkton, Md., native set the Maryland freshman wins record with 34 last season and solidifies the middle of the lineup for the Terps.

With Kyle John, a 2010 ACC runner-up, at 157 pounds, Asper at 165 and Letts at 174, Maryland can compete with almost any team in the nation at the middle weights.

Corey Peltier, though perhaps under the radar, has had success in the past and looks for a breakout season at 184 pounds. A junior, Peltier won 21 matches last season, with a 3-1 mark in ACC matches.

"Corey has been right there the last few years," said McCoy. "This year I think he's looking to turn that corner. I'm really excited for what he's going to do this year."

A talented group of newcomers led by Spencer Myers, a first team ASICS All-American in high school, will be ready to contribute immediately.

Freshman Ben Dorsay is a highly-touted freshman and will compete with redshirt freshman Justin Cash, among others, for the starting position at 149 pounds in a battle McCoy terms the most competitive on the team.

The Terps will face plenty of tough competition early in the season, though McCoy designed it so there will be ample time to integrate the newcomers into the demands of college wrestling.

"Our schedule is set up where we have enough time to train and to recover between competitions. We have a high enough level of competition that our guys are going to see elite-level competition, but we're not in a situation that we've been in the past where we're just grinding. So I'm very optimistic about the year."

Maryland will open the season with the Red and Black Wrestle-Offs on Saturday, Oct. 23, an intrasquad exhibition that determines the initial starters at each weight class. Although fans may not see some of the familiar faces they've grown accustomed to over the past few years, McCoy's goals remain unchanged.

"We should never be out of the hunt for an ACC title and a top 20 finish at the NCAAs. When everything comes together we can get into the top five and challenge for a national championship. This year we want to get multiple All-Americans, win the conference tournament and be in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships."

125

With the departure of James Knox, who graduated, junior Pat Strizki is the favorite to win the starting job. Junior Will Sharbaugh, sophomore Brian Marcoux and freshmen Ken Collado, Shane Gentry and Jenkins Monzey will all be in the hunt, however. Strizki won 11 matches last season and was 4-4 in dual competition.

133

Senior Lou Ruland and junior Joey Boone have separated themselves as the top two at 133 pounds. The winner of this job will have big shoes to fill, as Steven Bell won the last three ACC titles and was a two-time All-American at 133. Freshmen Frank Goodwin and Mason Goretsas will also challenge for time here.

141

Senior Jon Kohler returns to the weight where he won the 2008 ACC Championship after spending last season at 149 pounds. He looks to solidify a position that has been a strength for Maryland over the last three seasons - with Alex Krom's 2009 and 2010 titles, the Terps have won this weight at the ACC Championships the past three seasons.

Kohler will be pushed by junior Matt Bogusz, sophomore Brad Molina, redshirt freshman Danny O'Malley and freshman Mark Hartenstine.

149

This could be the most open competition out of the 10 weights, with five challengers vying for the starting position. Dexter Lederer is the lone senior and wrestled in two ACC duals last season, but a talented group of freshmen looks ready to challenge. Justin Cash, Eric Beverly and Danny Orem are all redshirt freshmen who spent last season wrestling in open competition, and true freshman Ben Dorsay comes to Maryland with high accolades.

157

Kyle John returns as the starter at 157 a season after winning 29 matches and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. John was 17-6 in dual meets, including 4-0 in ACC regular season meets, and is ranked in the top 10 at 157 pounds.

165

Sophomore Josh Asper is the returning starter and will look to improve on a season in which he set the school record for wins by a freshman and narrowly missed out on All-America status. Asper was an impressive 23-5 in dual meets last season and 11 wins by major decision.

Redshirt freshman Jimmy Sheptock, who went 24-3 last season in open competition, will challenge Asper.

174

Two-time ACC Champ Mike Letts looks to return to form after an injury-shortened 2010 season. Letts won the ACC Championship as a true freshman and sophomore and has never been outside the top 15 in the rankings when healthy.

184

Corey Peltier is the returning starter. Senior Bradley Nielson, redshirt freshman Ty Snook and true freshman Rob Fitzgerald will also compete here.

197

The spot left vacant by Hudson Taylor will likely come down to redshirt freshmen Christian Boley and Dallas Brown. Both are very talented and gained experience wrestling in open competition last season. Senior Tommy Sitar may also compete here, but will likely start the season at heavyweight.

285

Redshirt sophomore Ryan Gray moves up to heavyweight from 197 this year and will compete with true freshman Spencer Myers for the starting job. The Pennsylvania state champ at 215 pounds as a high school senior, Myers went 44-0 in his final season at Selinsgrove High School. Senior Owen Duffy and possibly Sitar will also battle for the starting role.
Maryland Wrestling Update-Rankings, Captains, Who's Wrestling, Blog Updates

We are just 10 days away from wrestle-offs and things are looking good. The preseason training was great and the first two weeks of official practice were even better. Here are a few updates:
Preseason Rankings

The first set of preseason rankings have been released by WIN Magazine and the Terps got some attention. Redshirt Sophomore Josh Asper enters the season with as our highest ranked individual at 5th. Redshirt Junior Kyle John is ranked 10th and Redshirt Senior Mike Letts is ranked 11th. I always say the rankings do not mean much, but its always nice to be recognized.
Captains

Our captains are selected by a vote from the team. This makes the recognition more meaningful, because the team chooses who their leaders will be. This year's team captains are Mike Letts, Jon Kohler and Kyle John.

Who will be representing the Terps?
The next few days will determine who will earn the chance to compete for the starting job on October 23rd. Although there are a few guys who have established themselves as front runners, no one has secured a starting position. Below is a weight by weight breakdown of our squad.

149
Dexter Lederer is the only senior in the group. Justin Cash, Eric Beverly and Danny Orem are all redshirt freshman and Ben Dorsay is a true freshman. It's going to fun to see who comes out on top here.
157
Kyle John is the favorite here. He will be challenged by redshirt junior Shawn Mazzarone and redshirt freshman Domenic DeRobertis.
165

Maryland Terps Wrestling Ranked 33rd in Preseason Poll

Three Terps ranked individually

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team was ranked 33rd in a preseason poll released this week by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine.

The Terps, who are coming off a 19-4 season, including a 20th place finish at the NCAA Championships, have several key returnees from last season's squad.

WINs individual rankings listed Asper as the fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 165 pounds, John as No. 10 at 157 pounds and Letts as No. 11 at 174 pounds.

Golf Outing
We held our annual golf outing Friday Aug. 20th at the UMD Golf Course. Thanks to the leadership of Coach Beckerman and the hard work of Coaches Sinnott, Byrne and Catullo, it was a great time and a huge success. There were approximately 95 players and quite a few people who attended the lunch. Thanks to all of or sponsors and players, it was not only a lot of fun, but we also made a good amount of money for the program.  The final numbers are not in yet, but we estimate it's at least three or four times what we brought in last year.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Entering the 2009-10 season, the University of Maryland wrestling team had its sights set high after returning the core of the team that won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and finished 10th at the NCAA Championships the year before.

Maryland entered the season with a consensus top-10 ranking, with some publications putting the Terps at No. 6, the highest preseason ranking in program history.

The Terps faced a grueling schedule which included an early season test with No. 4 Cornell, along with trips to the Northeast Duals, Midlands Championships and the NWCA National Duals. It would be one of the tougher schedules in the country, but Maryland would ultimately respond by setting a school record with 19 dual meet wins.

Along the way, the Terrapin program rose to new heights, garnering unprecedented national and local attention thanks to their performances on and off the mat.

The Terps opened the season at the Buffalo Open, where James Knox, Steven Bell, Kyle John and Mike Letts all took home individual titles, getting the year off to a good start.

Maryland then dominated two home dual meets against Drexel and York, winning by a combined score of 92-6. That set up a crucial matchup with fourth-ranked Cornell, a program long viewed as one of the best on the east coast.

Trailing 17-9 with only two matches remaining, Hudson Taylor and Patrick Gilmore helped stage a stunning comeback. Taylor pinned his opponent - fifth-ranked Cam Simaz - to bring the team score to 17-15. Gilmore then pushed No. 12 Josh Arnone into overtime, where he recorded a takedown for a sudden victory and an 18-17 Maryland win.

The Terps rode that momentum to a second-place finish at the Body Bar Invitational and then won two of three matches at the Northeast Duals, defeating Northern Colorado and No. 12 Lehigh, while falling to No. 10 Central Michigan.

Maryland ran its record to 7-1 after blowout wins over conference foe North Carolina and Penn in early December, leaving the team confident heading into the Midlands Championships.

At the Midlands - where many of the best teams in the country compete - the Terps placed two wrestlers in the finals for the first time in program history. Alex Krom became the first Maryland wrestler to win at the Midlands and the Terps finished sixth as a team, the highest finish in school history.

One of the toughest stretches of the schedule continued a week and a half after the Midlands as Maryland traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the National Duals. In their first ever appearance at the event, the Terps finished seventh after defeating Northern Iowa, Buffalo and No. 22 Wisconsin, while falling to No. 2 Iowa State and No. 8 Cornell.

A week later Maryland was back on the road, this time to Ashland, Ohio, for three tough matches in the Wendy's Duals. Wrestling all three matches in one day, the Terrapins responded with wins over Purdue, Ashland and No. 14 Kent State to run their record to 13-3.

With three starters out due to injury, Maryland dropped a heated match with rival Navy in Annapolis on Jan. 22, but then reeled off six straight wins to end the season. A victory over No. 24 Virginia in the season finale in Charlottesville gave the Terps the school record for wins in a season and sealed off a 4-0 run through ACC action.

The Terps fell painfully short of a third straight title at the ACC Championships, finishing second with 80.5 points to Virginia's 85. Maryland competed in the tourney without the services of former ACC Champ Mike Letts, who was lost for the season with a knee injury. Still, Bell, Krom and Taylor won individual titles and six Terps automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Bell became the program's second three-time ACC champ since 1988, while Taylor was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

At the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb., Taylor became the program's first ever three-time All-American with a fourth-place finish and Bell became the school's fifth two-time All-American with an eighth place finish. Maryland came away with its second consecutive top-20 team finish and its second consecutive year with multiple All-Americans. Two of the teams Maryland defeated in the regular season - Cornell and Wisconsin - finished second and fourth at the NCAA Championships, respectively.

Although the season was over, the individual accolades were not. Taylor was named ACC Wrestler of the Year for the second time in his illustrious career after finishing 42-4 on the season and setting the school's single-season record with 24 pinfalls. He would also later be named ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was awarded a post-graduate scholarship.

Bell, Krom, John and Josh Asper joined Taylor on the All-ACC team, while John, Knox, Matt Bogusz, Dallas Brown and Corey Peltier joined Taylor on the All-ACC Academic team.

The Terrapins will have to begin a new chapter in 2010-11 with the departure of stalwarts such as Taylor, Bell, Krom, Knox and Mookie Golden. But with promising young talent waiting in the wings, Maryland appears ready to continue its steady rise among the nation's elite wrestling programs.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy today announced the signing of seven student-athletes during the spring signing period, finalizing Maryland's 2010 class.

"I am very excited about our incoming class," said McCoy. "These guys are a perfect complement to the class we brought in last year, adding depth and experience to our program. When you graduate a class like we just did, it's a challenge to keep the ball rolling.

No. 9 Maryland Wrestling Rolls on Senior Day
Terps win fifth straight and ninth out of last 10

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - It was a fitting final home match for a senior class that is likely to go down as the best in Maryland wrestling history. The Terps dominated Hofstra 34-6 on Sunday at Comcast Pavilion in front of 743 fans, in the process setting the school record with 18 wins this season.

Seniors Hudson Taylor, Steven Bell, Alex Krom and James Knox all notched victories for the No. 9 Terps as Maryland improved its home record to a perfect 7-0 this season. Maryland, a program rich in history with 20 conference titles to its name, had twice reached the 17-win mark, but this year's team set the record against one of the toughest schedules in the nation. The Terps have won five straight and nine of their last ten matches.

"We've talked about this team being one of the most successful in program history and this further solidifies that statement," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We still have a chance to win one more and anytime you can have this much success against such a tough schedule it's a huge accomplishment. It's a real credit it to what these guys have done."

The Terps (18-4) won eight out of 10 matches against the Pride (5-11-2) and received bonus points in four matches, as Taylor, Bell, and Jon Kohler recorded pinfalls, while Alex Krom won by major decision.

Kohler set the tone in the first match at 149 pounds, methodically wearing down Ryan Colmer before recording a pin 6:29 into the match.

No. 19 Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, one of two ranked wrestlers for Hofstra, got the Pride on the scoreboard with a slim 15-11 decision over Kyle John in a back-and-forth match at 157 pounds.

No. 14 Josh Asper responded in the next match by defeating Hofstra's other ranked wrestler, No. 17 P.J. Gillespie. The grapplers battled through a scoreless first period, but Asper countered Gillespie's escape with a takedown in the second period to go ahead 2-1 heading into the final stanza. The redshirt freshman, now 29-6 this season, picked up an escape and another takedown in the third period and earned an additional point for riding time to take a 6-1 decision. Asper has won nine consecutive matches.

Bradley Nielson then extended Maryland's lead to 12-3 with a 10-3 decision over Jon Rothman at 174 pounds.

At 184, Corey Peltier dropped a 2-0 decision as Ben Clymer recorded a takedown in the final seconds, but Maryland won the next five matches.

Taylor, ranked third in the country at 197 pounds, recorded his NCAA Division 1-best 22nd pin of the season against Anthony Tortora. The two-time All-American pinned his opponent in 2:35, bringing his win total to 35 this season, which also leads all Division 1 wrestlers. Taylor, who never lost a home match in his career, is one pin shy of tying the single-season pins record of 23 set by Jake Stork in 2002-03.

Patrick Gilmore earned a 6-3 decision over Paul Snyder at heavyweight and Knox earned a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Jamie Franco at 125 pounds as the Terps increased their lead to 24-6.

Bell, who only lost one match at home in his career, pinned Luke Vaith in 4:46 at 133 pounds. A two-time ACC Champion, Bell has 97 wins in his career and is ranked 12th in the nation.

Krom finished things off for Maryland with a 10-2 major decision over Tyler Banks at 141 pounds. Ranked ninth in the nation, Krom won his fourth-straight match and has amassed 106 wins in his career, second on the team only to Taylor's 158.

The senior class consisting of Taylor, Bell, Krom, Knox, Andrew Bradley, Rich DiPietro, Mookie Golden and Casey Marwine recorded its 68th win in the last five seasons. The class also has two ACC titles to its name, and will compete for a third straight March 6 at the ACC Championship in Raleigh, N.C.

"For years to come people are going to talk about this class," said McCoy. "They've etched themselves in the record books in several areas. They're the leaders of the most successful years in program history. We're going to try to outperform ourselves each year but right now they're at the top of the ladder."

Maryland has an important match for conference seeding at Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 20. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Maryland Wrestling Cruises To Win Over George Mason
Terps win nine of 10 matches en route to 35-6 victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 10th-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team earned its 16th win of the season Friday night, dominating George Mason by winning nine of 10 matches en route to a 35-6 victory.

Maryland won the first six matches of the meet to take a 21-0 lead before George Mason was able to get on the board, as the Terps cruised to their seventh win in the last eight tries. At 16-4 on the season, Maryland is one victory shy of tying the school record for wins in a season. The Terps went 17-6 in 1990 and 17-5 in 2007.

"I feel good about how the guys wrestled and the results we got," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "They didn't make it easy for us, but what I'm really happy about is our guys scored a lot of points and really fought hard. We want guys to push the pace and score a lot of points and that's what they did."

No. 11 Steven Bell got a 12-4 major decision over Denny Herndon and Matt Bogusz took a 12-3 major over Jaaziah Bethea at 141 pounds, as Maryland took an 11-0 lead.

George Mason looked like they would win the match at 149 pounds as Brandon Bucher took a 7-0 lead over Jon Kohler with just over a minute left in the first period. But Kohler fought all the way back and won the match 11-9.

"We're never out of a match," said McCoy. "Jon could have rolled over, but he kept fighting and got the win, and that was a real spark for us. That's exactly the type of effort I'm looking for."

Kyle John kept the Terps rolling with an 11-5 decision over Aaron Keeton at 157 pounds, and No. 15 Josh Asper increased Maryland's lead to 21-0 with a 15-4 major decision at 165 pounds.

No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Breezes By NC State, Duke

Terps improve to 3-0 in conference duals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Following a disappointing loss to Navy less than 24 hours ago, the seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team wasted little time in showing its mettle against conference foes North Carolina State and Duke. In front of 814 fans at Comcast Pavilion, the Terrapins downed the Wolfpack 30-10 and handed Duke a 32-9 defeat to improve to 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action.

The Terps (15-4), whose last home loss was on Jan. 11, 2009, won seven out of 10 matches against both NC State (5-8) and Duke (2-4) to extend their winning streak at Comcast Pavilion to eight matches. Maryland was led by six wrestlers - Mookie Golden, Kyle John, No. 15 Josh Asper, Corey Peltier, No. 3 Hudson Taylor and Patrick Gilmore - who all went 2-0 on the day.

"It's good to see the guys improve and make adjustments from match to match," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "There are still areas where we need to improve, but I thought we fought harder and looked better today than we did last night."

Early on, the Terps looked like they would cruise to a win against NC State, as James Knox (125 pounds) and Golden (133) took major decisions in the first two matches of the day.

Knox used a late flurry in the final period to turn what had been a close match into an 11-2 major decision. Golden used the momentum to dominate at 133 pounds, scoring a takedown and a near-fall early in the match. Golden didn't allow his opponent, Scott Norris, to score a point and took a 9-0 major decision to give Maryland an early 8-0 lead.

But the Wolfpack won the next two matches to get within two points of the Terps. At 141 pounds, Matt Bogusz battled back from a 7-2 deficit against Dale Shull of NC State, tying the match at 9-9 late in the third period, but ultimately lost 12-9. No. 22 Bobby Ward of NC State took an 8-2 decision over Dex Lederer, who was wrestling in his first career dual meet for the Terps, as the Wolfpack brought the score to 8-6.

Maryland got some breathing room after John earned a 14-7 decision over Juan Stimpson at 157 pounds. John, who improved to 24-8 on the season, got out to an early 7-1 lead and cruised from there.

At 165 pounds, Asper provided another dominant performance for the Terps by controlling his match with Ray Ward throughout. Asper had near-falls twice in the final stanza, and went on to shutout Ward 11-0 as Maryland increased its lead to 15-6.

Owen Smith lost 11-2 to Quinton Godley at 174 pounds, but Peltier pinned Cedric Moore in 2:22 at 184 pounds as Maryland put the match out of reach.

Taylor won by forfeit and Gilmore got a hard-fought 3-0 win over Eloheim Palma to bring the final tally to 30-10.

Against Duke, the Terps found themselves in a similar position - leading 8-6 after four matches.

At 125 pounds, Peter Terrezza got the Blue Devils out to an early lead with a 10-4 decision over Pat Strizki.

Golden gave Maryland its first lead with a 15-0 technical fall to bring the team score to 5-3 in favor of Maryland. Golden, a senior who has wrestled in place of No. 11 Steven Bell in spurts throughout the season, proved to be a more than capable replacement on Saturday. He earned nine points total for Maryland on the day and didn't allow an opponent to score on him.

Bogusz nearly pinned Mike Bell in the first period of the matchup at 141 pounds and went on to an 11-5 decision. Chris Piccolella of Duke took an 8-6 decision over Lederer at 149 pounds, but the Blue Devils had to forfeit matches at 157 and 165 pounds, giving Maryland a commanding 20-6 lead.

Peltier, Taylor and Gilmore all capped off their perfect days by winning the final three matches. Peltier took a 7-3 decision over Diego Bencomo at 184, Taylor pinned John Barone in 1:12 at 197 and Gilmore earned an 8-2 decision over Robert Holbrook at heavyweight.

"I just told the guys, there are probably only two or three teams in the country that have gone through as tough of a stretch over the last month that we have," said McCoy. "To come out of that stretch nearly unscathed tells me we're ahead of schedule."

Maryland next returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29 when it travels to Fairfax, Va., to take on George Mason at 7:00 p.m.

No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Falls At Navy, 19-14
Terps fall to 13-4 on the season; host NC State and Duke tomorrow at Comcast Pavilion

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team fell 19-14 to Navy in front of 2,825 fans at Halsey Field House in Annaplis, Md. on Friday night.

The Terps, ranked seventh in the newly released National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Today/Coaches Poll and eighth in Intermat's rankings, were wrestling without several starters and were unable to overcome a gritty performance from the Midshipmen.

Navy won six of 10 matches, including four of five in the lightweight matches, to come up with the upset victory. The Midshipmen improved to 3-1 on the season while the Terps fell to 13-4.

"It's a frustrating loss," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "It's tough to win against a good team with all your starters and even more difficult without some of your starters when you get outfought. You can't teach fight and belief. Hopefully it's that wakeup call that we need."

The match started at 197 pounds, where No. 3 Hudson Taylor had little trouble dispatching Charles Carafano. Taylor improved to 30-2 this season with a 14-2 major decision to give the Terps an early 4-0 lead.

Wrestling against No. 5 Scott Steele of Navy, Patrick Gilmore kept the match scoreless through one period. Steele recorded two takedowns in the second period and took a 5-1 lead heading into the final period, a lead that Gilmore couldn't overcome. Gilmore recorded a point for an escape in the final stanza but Steele was able to come out on top 6-2 to bring the team score to 4-3 in favor of Maryland.

Navy then won four of the next five matches to extend its lead to 16-7. At 125 pounds, Aaron Kalil got out to a 6-0 lead over James Knox and finished with a 7-1 decision as Navy took a 6-4 lead. Mookie Golden, wrestling in place of No. 11 Steven Bell at 133 pounds, earned a 6-4 decision over Pat McCaffrey to help Maryland regain the lead, 7-6.

Matt Bogusz, wrestling at 141 pounds in place of No. 9 Alex Krom, trailed 3-1 to Matt Pagan heading into the third period. Pagan got three takedowns in the final period as Navy retook a lead it wouldn't relinquish, 9-7.

Glenn Shober won by major decision, 15-4, over Jon Kohler at 149 pounds and No. 8 Bryce Saddoris knocked off Kyle John, 9-7, at 157 pounds as Navy extended its lead to 16-7.

"We needed to get one more match and we didn't get it done," said McCoy. "From 125 [pounds] to 157 [pounds] they won four out of five. We didn't seem to have the same fight that we had last weekend."

No. 15 Josh Asper took a dominant 14-4 major decision over Robby Neill at 165 pounds, but Owen Smith, who filled in for No. 6 Mike Letts, fell to Matt DeMichiel at 174 pounds as Navy put the match out of reach. The Midshipmen led 19-11 heading into the final match.

Corey Peltier defeated Greg Priouleau 8-2 at 184 pounds, but it wasn't enough as Maryland suffered its first loss of the season to an unranked opponent.

"Hopefully the guys can shake it off and be ready for tomorrow," said McCoy. "Tonight, this match is the most important thing, but as soon as we get to Comcast tomorrow, our matches with North Carolina State and Duke are the most important things. It's very important for conference seeding that we wrestle well, so hopefully the guys decide they are ready to fight for the team, for the school and for themselves."

Maryland hosts NC State at noon and Duke at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Comcast Pavilion. The Terps will honor all faculty and staff, as well as military members for their service and support at Saturday's matches.

*Parking Advisory*
The wrestling match with Duke was moved from 3 p.m. to 2 p.m. in order to accommodate wrestling fans who would like to park in the lots surrounding Comcast Center prior to the men's basketball game against NC State at 6 p.m. All fans wishing to park in lot 4b should arrive there prior to 2 p.m. Furthermore, University Parking will not begin ticketing and towing in lot 4b on Saturday until 4 p.m., in order to allow wrestling fans to park there. No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Ready For National Duals
Terps head back to Midwest for shot at nation's best competition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team continues through one of the toughest parts of the schedule this season when it heads to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on Saturday and Sunday.

The Terps finished sixth at the Midlands Championships last weekend, the schools best finish ever at the event. Facing competition from some of the nation's toughest teams, including Iowa, Iowa State and Central Michigan, among others, Maryland had three placers and its first ever individual champion. Alex Krom dominated the competition at 141 pounds, going 5-0 to claim the open title. Steven Bell finished runner-up at 133 pounds, while Hudson Taylor was fifth at 197.

Maryland will face much of the same competition at the National Duals, but rather than an open tournament, teams will go head-to-head in dual meets.

"I am very excited for this weekend," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We've had some great workouts the last few days and we'll need to be sharp and wrestle to our potential this weekend. If we do that we are going to do well."

Action gets underway Saturday at noon Eastern, when Maryland, which is seeded No. 7, takes on tournament host Northern Iowa. The Terps will face either No. 2 Iowa State or Bloomsburg in the second round at 4 p.m.
Maryland Wrestling Finishes 6th at Midlands
Krom wins individual title to lead Terps

Evanston, Ill. – Alex Krom won the individual championship at 141 pounds and the University of Maryland wrestling team finished sixth at the Midlands Championships, its best finish ever at the prestigious tournament.

The Terps had three wrestlers place, as Steven Bell finished runner-up at 133 pounds and Hudson Taylor took fifth at 197 pounds. Maryland finished sixth despite wrestling with eight entrants rather than 10, as Mike Letts and Patrick Gilmore were unable to compete.

“It’s a pretty good showing for us,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “We’re not overly excited about it. To have only eight guys compete and finish sixth is pretty good, and it’s a good barometer to see where we are. We have some work to do to get ready for National Duals and correct some errors, but I’m happy with the way our guys are wrestling at this point.”

Krom had a dominant run, going 5-0 with three pinfalls and one major decision. The 10th ranked wrestler in the country, Krom took a 9-2 decision over one-seed Jimmy Kennedy of Illinois in the final, becoming the first Maryland wrestler to win a title at the Midlands. To get there, he pinned No. 19 Trevor Melde of Rutgers in the quarterfinals in 1:45 and No. 16 Ryan Prater of Illinois in the semifinals in 2:00.

Bell won his first four matches to reach the finals, including a semifinal win over No. 15 Kelly Kubec of Oregon State, but was defeated in the championship match by fourth-seeded and No. 12 Tyler Graff of Wisconsin.

Taylor, meanwhile, found himself wrestling a post-collegiate entrant in the semifinals. Because the Midlands Championships is an open tournament, wrestlers of all ages are eligible to enter. Wynn Michalak, who wrestled at Central Michigan, bested Taylor 9-5 in the semifinal round. The loss, however, does not count towards Taylor’s record. From there Taylor went on to drop a close match with fourth-seeded and No. 7 Trevor Brandvoid of Wisconsin. He then pinned Patrick Bond of Illinois in 3:55 to take fifth place.

The Terps are next in action on Jan. 9 when they compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
No. 7 Maryland 32, Pennsylvania 6
No. 7 Terps off to best start since 1994-95

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 7 University of Maryland wrestling team returned to College Park to compete at home for the first time in over a month and didn't disappoint, easily defeating Penn 32-6 in front of 436 fans Friday night at Comcast Pavilion.

The Terps won eight of 10 matches to improve their record to 7-1 on the season, which marks the best start by Maryland since it opened the season 9-1 in 1994-95.

"I'm very happy with how the first part of the season has gone," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Obviously the perfectionist in me wishes we were undefeated and thinks that we could and should be undefeated. But I'm really happy with where we are because we're not wrestling our best and we're having good results, and our guys are improving every week. The situations that are costing us matches are tactical, but there aren't too many people we're going against that are just straight better than us."

The Terps were out to a lead before anyone had the chance to wrestle. A forfeit by Penn at heavyweight gave Maryland a 6-0 edge entering the 125-pound match between James Knox and Mark Rappo. After Knox got an early takedown, Rappo countered with a reversal to knot the match at two. The two battled back and forth for much of the match, and with the score tied at four late in the third period, Knox earned two points for a takedown and picked up one more in riding time, giving him the 7-4 decision and a 9-0 lead for Maryland.

Penn pulled the match to 9-6 by taking two close decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, but that would be the only points the Quakers would earn.

Jon Kohler earned an early takedown for a 2-0 lead in his match against Troy Hernandez, and nearly pinned him midway through the second period. In control for most of the match, Kohler took a 10-3 decision to increase Maryland's lead to 12-6.

At 157 pounds Kyle John dominated Jake Hunter throughout the match on his way to a 16-4 major decision. Ranked No. 19 in the nation, Kohler had five takedowns as Maryland stretched the lead to 16-6.

Josh Asper had perhaps the toughest test in taking on Gabe Burak at 165 pounds, who entered the match 18-2 on the season. Asper nearly ended the match by pin in the first period, but a reversal by Burak kept him alive. The two battled back and forth for the final two periods, but Asper came out on top with a 12-7 decision.

No. 6 Mike Letts clinched the win for Maryland by earning a 7-4 decision over Scott Giffin at 174 pounds. Corey Peltier followed that with a 9-0 major decision over Harrison Cook at 184 pounds, setting up the finale at 197 pounds.

No. 3 Hudson Taylor, who last week set the Maryland career record for wins (140) and pinfalls (72), needed just 49 seconds to pin Micah Burak. It was the 14th pin of the season for Taylor, who ran his record to 18-0.

Maryland gets two weeks off for finals and Christmas break before returning to action on Dec. 27 at the Wilkes Open in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Two days later, the Terps head to Evanston Ill. to compete at Midlands.

Maryland's Taylor Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

Third-ranked senior earns honor for the second time in three weeks

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - All-America senior Hudson Taylor has claimed his second Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week honor of the 2009-10 season after a weekend in which he defeated three fellow nationally-ranked wrestlers and became the program's all-time leader in career victories and pins.

Taylor set the school record for career pins by picking up four to bring his collegiate total to 72. The senior helped the seventh-ranked Terps to a 41-0 ACC season-opening victory over North Carolina on Friday by pinning No. 11 Dennis Drury, which brought Taylor's career pin total to 69, tying him with Jake Stork for most in school history.

Taylor broke the record on Sunday in the Penn State Open. The third-ranked wrestler in the country went 5-0 to claim the title at 197 pounds, winning three matches by pin and two matches over ranked opponents. Taylor's record is now 17-0 on the season, with 13 of those victories coming by pin. Taylor's wins in the Penn State open included an 11-5 decision over No. 19 Matthew Wilps of Pittsburgh and a pin of Virginia's 15th-ranked Brent Jones, the ACC's defending champion in the 197-pound weight class and the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2009 ACC Championships.

A two-time All-American, Taylor also set the Maryland career wins record with his stellar two days of work. The Pennington, N.J., native now has 140, beating the previous mark of 139 set by Brandon York (1998-2002), who was a four-time ACC Champion as well as a four-time NCAA qualifier.

Maryland plays host to Pennsylvania on Friday in Comcast Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. Friday will be Greek/Campus organization night, with the largest fraternity/sorority or campus organization winning a prize.
Maryland's Taylor Wins Title At Penn State Open

Senior now owns Maryland career wins, pinfalls records

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Third-ranked Hudson Taylor won five matches, including three by pinfall, to take the 197-pound title Sunday at the Penn State Open and become the winningest wrestler in school history.

Combined with a win in Friday's dual meet against North Carolina, Taylor won six matches over the weekend, bringing his career win total to 140. That surpassed Brandon York's record of 139 wins, achieved from 1998-2002. York, who wrestled at 141 pounds, was a four-time NCAA qualifier and the only wrestler in Maryland history to win four ACC Championships.

Taylor, who tied the Maryland career pinfall record of 69 on Friday against North Carolina, brought his career total to 72, breaking the record set by Jake Stork (1999-2003). The senior from Pennington, N.J., has 13 pins this season. Stork had a single-season record 23 pinfalls in 2002-03.

"Hudson put himself on pace early in his career to be one of the best Maryland's ever had," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "This weekend he established that with the pins record and the most career wins record."

Taylor has improved steadily over his five seasons in College Park, increasing his win total each year. He won 19 matches while redshirting in 2005-06, 29 as a redshirt freshman, 37 as a sophomore, and 38 as a junior last season.

"Hudson has a desire to be the best," said McCoy. "He sets his mind to something and goes and gets it, and he is one of the best I have seen at doing that. He set his mind on pinning every one he wrestles. He put the work in last spring and summer, going to the Olympic training center and wrestling against elite-level guys. Every day he goes out there, he goes out to get takedowns and pins. He's been able to make that correlation between the way he practices and the way he competes."

Taylor won his second open title of the season by going 5-0 at the Penn State Open. After dispatching Jake Glore of Missouri 5-2 in the first round, Taylor broke the pinfalls record against Kyle Sanders of Ohio, getting the pin in just 2:19. He picked up another pin in the next round and earned an 11-5 decision over No. 19 Matthew Wilps of Pittsburgh in the semifinals. Fittingly, Taylor pinned No. 15 Brent Jones of Virginia in 1:51 to win the title and earn his 140th career victory.

A two-time All-American, Taylor is a perfect 17-0 on the season. He finished third at the NCAA Championships each of the past two seasons, and is only the fourth repeat All-American in Maryland history. Taylor has a chance to become the first three-time All-American in school history.
No. 7 Maryland Wrestling Defeats North Carolina, 41-0
Taylor ties school record for career pinfalls

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team avenged last season's regular season loss to North Carolina by opening conference play with a 41-0 victory over the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday night.

Maryland (6-1, 1-0 ACC) dominated from the beginning, winning all ten matches.

"It feels good to win this way after they beat us last year," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We're doing the right things and continuing to work hard to get better and put ourselves in the position we need to be in."

On paper, the Terps looked to have the advantage in the early matches while the Tar Heels looked to hold an edge in the middle weights. Maryland opened by getting major decisions in each of the first two matches before No. 11 Alex Krom went to overtime to defeat Mike Rappo. Maryland held an 11-0 lead going into the matchup at 149 pounds, Jon Kohler widened the lead for Maryland by taking a 10-8 decision over No. 12 Nick Stabile. Kyle John followed that up at 157 with a major decision over No. 12 Thomas Scotton, putting Maryland completely in control.

Josh Asper (165) and Corey Peltier (184) both got close wins, while No. 6 Mike Letts (174) earned an 18-3 technical fall over Thomas Ferguson.

No. 3 Hudson Taylor recorded the 69th pin of his career, tying Jake Stork's school record. The senior from Pennington, N.J., is now 12-0 on the season, winning 10 of those matches by pin.

Maryland is back in action on Sunday as a number of Terps travel to State College, Pa., to compete in the Penn State Open.

Maryland to Open ACC Action Friday at North Carolina
No. 7 Terps enter conference action with 5-1 record

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team opens Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina.

The Terps have had great success recently in conference action, having won the past two ACC championships. North Carolina, however, took a 19-15 decision last season that ended Maryland's 10-match winning streak in ACC duals.

"I'm really looking forward to this match," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "They have a good team and a lot of tough individuals, so we need to be ready. This is our first ACC match of the season and I expect it to set the tone for the rest of the conference duals."

Having already faced three ranked teams, the Terps have challenged themselves early in the season. Maryland enters the contest with a 5-1 dual record, including wins over No. 4 Cornell and No. 12 Lehigh. Six of Maryland's 10 starters have won individual championships at open meets since the season began on Nov. 1.

Maryland should have the advantage in the early matches against North Carolina. James Knox (12-4) has wrestled well recently, having beaten No. 15 Tony Mustari of Northern Colorado last weekend at the Northeast Duals. No. 8 Steven Bell (9-1) takes on Jeremy Shaw (6-3) at 133 and No. 11 Alex Krom (4-2) faces either Mike Rappo (4-2) or Danny Lopes (7-2) at 141.

The Tar Heels have three ranked wrestlers, including the No. 12 wrestler at 149 and 157 pounds. If the Terps can get through the middle weights with some success, they should be able to put the match away. In No. 6 Mike Letts, No. 3 Hudson Taylor, and No. 20 Patrick Gilmore, Maryland sends ranked wrestlers to the mat in three of the final four matches.

Following the dual meet Friday, a number of Maryland wrestlers will head to State College, Pa., to compete in the Penn State Open on Sunday. Rich DiPietro, Owen Duffy, Bradley Nielson, Lou Ruland, Owen Smith and Hudson Taylor will compete attached, while a much larger group will compete unattached: Eric Beverly, Christian Boley, Joey Boone, Dallas Brown, Andrik Cruz, Domenic Derobertis, Charles Golden, Ryan Gray, Timothy Marcoux, Shawn Mazzarone, Danny Orem, Bryan Osorio, Jimmy Sheptock and Pat Strizki.

DiPietro Selected to ACC Leadership Conference
Junior Rich DiPietro has been selected to represent the University of Maryland at the 2010 ACC Leadership Conference. DiPietro will join approximately 70 other students from ACC schools in a three-day leadership workshop with a theme of social change. The conference, which will be held at Florida State University, will aim to tackle such current societal issues as discrimination, environmental justice, access to healthcare and homelessness.

Maryland Wrestling Wins Two of Three at Northeast Duals
Taylor goes 3-0 to remain undefeated

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 University of Maryland wrestling team won two of three dual meets today at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y., claiming victory over Northern Colorado and No. 12 Lehigh while falling to No. 10 Central Michigan.

The Terps moved their record to 5-1 on the season, including 2-1 against ranked opponents.

"I'm happy where the team is right now because I know we have time to get better," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I was happy with the way we wrestled against Northern Colorado and Lehigh. Obviously you never like to lose but sticking with a team like Central Michigan when you're not wrestling your best shows a lot."

Maryland started the day at 9:15 a.m. and wasted little time putting away Northern Colorado. James Knox opened the day by knocking off No. 15 Tony Mustari 2-1 and the Terps won nine of 10 matches en route to a 35-3 victory.

Central Michigan boasted six wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their weight divisions and outlasted the Terps 21-16. With the Chippewas out to an early 9-0 lead, No. 7 Alex Krom took an 11-3 major decision over Ryan Cubberly to bring the score to 9-4, but Central Michigan took four of the next five matches to go ahead 21-7 and put the match out of reach. No. 3 Hudson Taylor recorded the 68th pinfall of his career - one short of tying Jake Stork's school record of 69 - over Eric Simaz. Patrick Gilmore continued to perform well at heavyweight for the Terps by taking a 2-1 decision over No. 9 Jarod Trice.

The Terps capped the day with a win over Lehigh and former Maryland head coach Pat Santoro. Maryland won the first four matches and seven of 10 overall for a 22-12 win that was never really in doubt.

Knox took a 4-0 decision over John McDonald to open the match and No. 7 Steven Bell earned a 6-1 decision over No. 18 Matt Fisk at 133. Krom got a 5-4 decision over No. 12 Seth Ciasulli at 141, and Jon Kohler (149) defeated Joey Napoli 5-3 to give the Terps an early 12-0 lead.

After Sean Bilodeau pinned Kyle John to bring the score to 12-6, Josh Asper took a 7-6 decision over Mike Galante and No. 4 Mike Letts beat No. 18 Robert Hamlin 5-3 to give the Terps an 18-6 lead.

Maryland travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on North Carolina in their ACC opener on Friday. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.

No. 6 Maryland Wrestling Ready For Northeast Duals
Terps have three difficult dual meets Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After defeating then-No. 4 Cornell and taking second place at the Body Bar Invitational last weekend, the sixth-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team travels to Ithaca, N.Y., Saturday for three tough dual meets as part of the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals.

The Terps (3-0) will face a number of difficult tests, going head-to-head with Northern Colorado, No. 10 Central Michigan and No. 12 Lehigh. Maryland's three opponents have a combined 12 wrestlers ranked in the Intermat Top 20.

"The guys understand that we need to remain focused and build off the momentum from last week and I've been very pleased with their preparation," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We're trying to get better every day to prepare ourselves for March and this weekend is another important step."

Maryland has close ties to both Lehigh and Central Michigan. During his time at Lehigh, McCoy shared the sidelines with former Maryland head coach Pat Santoro, who was also on the staff at Penn State when McCoy was a wrestler. Santoro left Maryland following the 2007 season to take the head coaching position at Lehigh.

Maryland assistant coach Brandon Sinnott graduated from Central Michigan in 2008 as a two-time All-American and the only wrestler in school history to win three individual Mid-American Conference titles. He served as a graduate assistant for the Chippewas in 2008-09, prior to accepting his current position with the Terps.

Northern Colorado will be competing in its first dual meet of the season when it meets Maryland Saturday. The Bears competed in the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo., on Nov. 14 and hosted the Northern Colorado Open on Nov. 22, though no team scores were kept at the events.

Central Michigan enters Saturday's match 1-0 in dual action, having also competed in the Eastern Michigan Open and Michigan State open on Nov. 7 and Nov. 15, respectively. Seven of the Chippewas 10 probable starters are ranked in the top 20, including Mike Miller, who is No. 1 in the nation at 174 pounds.

Lehigh, meanwhile, holds a 4-1 record with two wins over ranked opponents. The Mountain Hawks have wins over No. 15 Penn State and No. 24 Michigan, with their lone loss coming at the hands of No. 5 Ohio State.

The Terps are led by four wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their weight divisions. Two-time All-American and third-ranked Hudson Taylor (197 pounds) was named ACC Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday after going 6-0 over the weekend, including two victories over then-No. 5 Cam Simaz of Cornell. With 66 career pins, he is just three shy of tying the school record of 69 set by Jake Stork. Mike Letts is ranked No. 4 at 174 pounds while Steven Bell (133) and Alex Krom (141) are both ranked No. 7. Bell is a perfect 7-0 on the season.

Action gets underway at 9:15 a.m. as Maryland takes on Northern Colorado at Hudson Valley Community College. The Terps face Central Michigan at 1:15 p.m. and Lehigh at 3:15 p.m.

Maryland's Bell, Krom Compete in All-star Classic
Krom takes 8-0 major decision

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the first time in school history, the University of Maryland wrestling team sent two wrestlers to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic, one of the most prestigious events in the sport.

A year after <http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/taylor_hudson00.html>Hudson Taylor became the first Terp to participate in the event since 1969, Steven Bell and Alex Krom competed in this year's classic, which featured exhibition matches between top wrestlers from across the country.

Bell, ranked No. 8 in the latest Intermat poll at 133 pounds, had the tough task of taking on No. 4 Daniel Dennis of Iowa. Just two days after taking a 4-3 decision over No. 6 Mike Grey of Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., Bell battled Dennis in a back-and-forth match that came down to the final seconds. With the match knotted at seven, Bell earned a point for an escape and took an 8-7 lead. But with just 25 seconds remaining in the match, Dennis got a takedown, earning a 9-8 decision over Bell.

Krom, who is ranked No. 4 at 141 pounds, was scheduled to face No. 2 Nick Gallick of Iowa. Gallick, however, was unable to attend, and Adin Duenas of host Cal State Fullerton subbed in. Krom took an 8-0 major decision over Duenas.

The matches are considered exhibitions and do not count towards the wrestlers records.

Maryland is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Terps will face No. 11 Central Michigan, No. 16 Lehigh and Northern Colorado in dual meets.
No. 10 Maryland Wrestling Takes Second at Body Bar Invitational
Asper, Taylor win individual titles

ITHACA, N.Y. - Josh Asper and No. 3 Hudson Taylor won individual titles as the No. 10 University of Maryland wrestling team tied for second place at the Body Bar Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., on Saturday.

Asper went 4-0 to claim the championship at 165 pounds. He opened with a 16-1 technical fall over Sli Bostelman of Kent State, followed that with a 14-3 major decision in his second match and then took 4-1 and 4-2 decisions to win the title.

Taylor, who had a crucial pinfall in the win over No. 4 Cornell on Friday, continued his dominance on the mat Saturday. Taylor won his first four matches by pinfall to cruise into the finals for a rematch against No. 5 Cam Simaz of Cornell. Although he didn't get the pin this time, Taylor dispatched Simaz with a 7-2 decision for the title. With five pins this weekend, Taylor now has 66 in his career. The school record is 69 by Jake Stork (1999-2003).

"It was a good weekend, obviously there are errors we can fix but it's great to come out of here with a couple championships and a dual meet win," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I'm looking forward to the matches tomorrow and to getting back to work this week in preparation for the Northeast Duals."

Mike Letts (174) and Patrick Gilmore (HWT) both finished second in their divisions. Gilmore avenged an earlier loss to Kyle Frey of Drexel, taking a 7-4 decision to reach the finals.

Maryland Wrestling Signs Three Recruits
Terps add wrestlers at 133, 141 and heavyweight

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy announced today the signing of three recruits for the 2010-11 season.

Frank Goodwin of Arundel high school in Maryland, Mark Hartenstine of Easton high school in Pennsylvania, and Spencer Myers of Selinsgrove high school in Pennsylvania have all officially pledged to becoming Terrapins.

The Terps got much needed help at 133 and 141 pounds, as senior All-Americans Steven Bell (133) and Alex Krom (141) are in their final year of eligibility.

Goodwin is ranked No. 5 by Intermat in the 130-pound high school division, and is expected to wrestle at 133 for Maryland. He finished second this year in folkstyle at National Preps, third in Greco-Roman at the Fargo Junior Nationals, and sixth in freestyle, also at the Fargo Junior Nationals.

Harternstine, the No. 12 ranked wrestler in the 140-pound high school division, is expected to wrestle at 141 for the Terps. He has won four championships while in high school, all while wrestling folkstyle. Hartenstine's titles came in 2008 at Manhiem, the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Open Nationals, and the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals. He also won a Reno TOC title in 2007.

Myers comes in at No. 3 in the 215-pound division and will wrestle at heavyweight for the Terps. He finished second at the 2009 NHSCA Junior Nationals and second at the Pennsylvania state tournament. Myers has won 93 percent of his matches over the past two seasons, going 42-2 as a junior in 2008-09 and 38-4 as a sophomore in 2007-08.
Maryland Open Season with Wins Against Drexel, York

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 10th-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team opened the 2009-10 season in dominant fashion, winning a pair of duals against Drexel and York in a tri-meet Saturday at Comcast Pavilion.

The Terrapins (2-0) opened the day with a 35-6 victory against Drexel (1-1) and returned shortly after with a 57-0 shutout of York (0-2) that lasted less than 45 minutes and featured eight pins.

"I was happy. We won 18 of 20 matches and got bonus points in a lot of matches," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "It was a great performance in front of our home crowd. All of our guys got a chance to compete and they competed well."

Maryland opened its match with Drexel with three straight major decisions to open an early 12-0 lead. James Knox won 9-1 at 125 pounds, No. 8 Steven Bell took over late to defeat Steve Mytych, 12-3, at 133 pounds and No. 4 Alex Krom also used a late flurry to knock off Matt Dugan at 141 pounds, 13-5.

Drexel broke through at 149 pounds with a Brett McCurdy decision over Jon Kohler, 4-1, but Maryland re-gained control and cruised to victory from there.

Kyle John and Joseph Booth engaged in the closest and arguably most-entertaining match of the entire day at 157 pounds. John trailed 8-4 heading into the third period and was behind 8-6 with less than a minute remaining. However, John eventually got Booth on the ground to tie the score late and he was able to ride Booth out and earn the riding-time bonus for a thrilling, 9-8 victory.

Josh Asper then took an 18-5 major decision at 165 and Drexel forfeited at 174, putting Maryland on top, 25-3. Corey Peltier followed with an 11-0 major decision at 184 and No. 3 Hudson Taylor had little trouble at 197, pinning Jack Callender in 1 minute, 29 seconds.

The Dragons salvaged the final matchup at heavyweight, as Kyle Frey bested Patrick Gilmore, 7-5, in the first sudden victory period.

Maryland had absolutely no trouble in the final match of the day against York. Maryland won by fall or technical fall in nine of 10 matches, as only one went the regulation seven minutes. Only three matches needed a second period to be decided.

Knox pinned Aaron Repman 52 seconds into the second period to begin the dual and Bell followed suit with a fall in 1:17 against Alex Paladino to give Maryland a 12-0 advantage.

Krom was superior at 141 pounds, earning a 19-4 technical fall with 23 seconds remaining in the first period. Kohler pinned Ryan Catton in 2:09 at 149 and John needed only 58 seconds to pin Alan Dyer at 157.

Asper won a 17-5 major decision against Matt Heisey at 165 pounds in the only match that wasn't decided by fall or technical fall.

After winning by forfeit against Drexel, No. 5 Mike Letts took the mat to wrestle in a dual meet for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Letts was stellar in his return, pinning Paul Richards in 1:19.

The Terps capped the day with three more pins. Peltier pinned Alex Martocello in 6:49, Taylor took out George Saliba in a swift 39 seconds and Gilmore sealed the shutout against Thomas Fitzpatrick, earning a win by fall in 2:01.

Drexel defeated York, 37-9, in the first match of the day.

Maryland has a week off before a highly-anticipated matched Friday, Nov. 20 at Cornell.

Coming off an ACC championship and 10th place finish at the 2009 NCAA championships, Maryland wrestling earned the No. 6 spot in D1CollegeWrestling's preseason rankings. The Terps return three All-Americans in Steven Bell, Alex Krom and Hudson Taylor, and have five wrestlers ranked among the top 15 in their individual weight classes.

The show will include interviews with Taylor, who finished third at the NCAA championships in 2009, and head coach Kerry McCoy, the 2009 ACC coach of the year.

Maryland Wrestling Ranked 6th in Preseason Poll

Five Terps ranked individually among top 15

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team, coming off its second straight Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, has been tabbed the No. 6 team in the country in a preseason poll released by D1Wrestling.net. The ranking is the highest in school history.

The Terps, who return three All-Americans in Steven Bell, Alex Krom and Hudson Taylor, have five wrestlers ranked among the top 15 in their respective weight classes. Taylor led the team in wins last year with 38, and is ranked No. 3 in the 197-pound class.  Bell is No. 4 in the 133-pound class, while Krom is also No. 4 at 141 pounds. Senior Mike Letts is No. 6 in the 174-pound class, and junior Brian Letters rounds out the rankings for Maryland, coming in at No. 14 in the 157-pound class.

"It's great to be recognized in the rankings," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We have high expectations for this year and we are going to work hard to achieve our goals."

Maryland is the lone ACC school to be ranked in the top 15 in the team poll. The website ranks Virginia at No. 20 and Virginia Tech at No. 21. The Terps bring back the core of the team that finished 10th at the NCAA Championships last season, and add 13 newcomers that make up one of the most highly touted recruiting classes in program history. They kick off the season on November 7, when they will host Drexel and York for a doubleheader in College Park.

Maryland Wrestling Update 7/16-Summer time, Golf Outing, Blog

During the last few weeks have been very busy finishing camps and getting recruiting in full swing. Coaches Beckerman and Powell are preparing to travel to Fargo, ND for the Cadet and Junior Nationals next week. This is one of the premier events annually, and we are excited to have a presence there for recruiting.

We have also received some media attention recently. Yesterday, the Baltimore Pressbox posted a great story about the program. Click below to read it:

http://www.pressboxonline.com/story.cfm?id=5047

Our guys' level of commitment and energy is very high this summer. A lot of the returning wrestlers are in the area working, taking classes and training. As well, we have a few of our incoming freshmen in the area getting ready for the next step in their academic and athletic lives which shows their level of commitment to the next step in their academic and wrestling careers.

We are in the final stages of planning our golf outing. The date is set for Friday, August 28. The event will be held at the University of Maryland Golf Course. We anticipate mailing info this week. If you are not on our mailing list and would like information on our outing, please send me your address or you can go to terpswretling.com and get more info.

When you visit terpswrestling.com you will see some new enhancements to the site. I am excited to announce that we have started two blogs for this coming season. A written blog which will feature news, thoughts and perspectives about the program and a video blog, which we plan to post regular video highlights and interviews. You can go directly to the blog at terpswrestling.com/blog. I will continue to send regular email updates, but the blog will give you a different look at our program. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts.

Take care and thanks for the continued support.

This year's schedule is very competitive and will test us throughout the year. We have a lot of variety in our schedule. There is a good mix of teams we have seen before and teams we have not. We will compete with teams from almost every conference, which will be very good for our guys because they will be exposed to many different styles. We have the potential to do some great things this coming season and this schedule will force us to be sharp and focused throughout the entire season.

Among some of the Terps' notable opponents are Cornell, Lehigh, Central Michigan, Penn, Purdue, Navy and American. We will also compete in the Body Bar Invitational, Northeast Duals, Penn State Open, Midlands Championships and NWCA National Duals. Its going to be a great year.

2009-10 Schedule

The unofficial start to the season is October 24 with the annual Red and Black Wrestle-Offs exhibition in Comcast Pavilion. The Terps officially get going November 7 with a home tri-meet against Drexel and York College. A challenging trip to upstate New York beckons two weeks after the opening tri-meet in College Park, as the Terps will face national power Cornell on the road on a Friday evening in Ithaca before coming back Saturday to compete in the Body Bar Invitational.

Things get no easier the following weekend with another trip to New York, this time to Troy, N.Y., for a trio of exciting match ups in the Northeast Duals. Maryland's three opponents include stalwarts Lehigh, Central Michigan and Northern Colorado.

Atlantic Coast Conference competition begins December 4 at North Carolina. The Penn State Open is that same weekend then we return home to Comcast Pavilion December 11 for a non-conference match up with the University of Pennsylvania.

After a two-week holiday break, the Terps travel to Evanston, Ill., for the second straight year to compete in the Midlands Championships, one of the most prestigious college wrestling tournaments, at Northwestern University.
A return trip to the Midwest is scheduled for the following week, where Maryland will compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Terps will be in Ashland, Ohio, the following weekend for the Wendy's Duals, where Maryland will face Purdue, Kent State and Ashland.
Following its three-week trip to the Midwest, Maryland returns to the area for the final month to complete dual competition.

The annual highly-anticipated rivalry match up between Maryland and Navy is set for January 22 in Annapolis. An ACC doubleheader is scheduled the next day at Comcast Pavilion. Maryland will face NC State at noon and Duke at 5 p.m.

George Mason hosts the Terps January 29 before the Terps return home to face Virginia Tech, last year's regular-season ACC champion, the following weekend in College Park.

Another local rival is on tap February 12 as American University visits College Park. Two days after the American tilt, Hofstra is in town for a challenging non-conference clash on Valentine's Day.

The regular season ends February 20 with a short trip south to Charlottesville, Va., to close the ACC season at Virginia.

Following the trip to Virginia, the Terps will have two weeks off before coming right back to Charlottesville for the ACC Championship, where Maryland will look to win its third straight conference title.
Maryland's NCAA qualifiers will travel to Omaha, Neb., March 18-20, as the Terps will look to build on last year's school record-tying 10th place national finish.

Joining Taylor on the ACC team are teammates Danny Bichner (Letters & Sciences), Mike Hromada (Letters & Sciences), Patrick Klenkel (Government), James Knox (Kinesiology) and Dex Lederer (Letters & Sciences).

Duke led the ACC with eight grapplers on the all-academic team, headlined by Scholar Athlete of the Year John Barone.
