McDaniel's
Howard Headed to Nationals
BALTIMORE -- McDaniel senior Tony Howard (Rockville, MD / Magruder) captured his second Centennial Conference Championship in as many seasons, winning the 165-pound weight class. He was also named the Tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.
Howard, an All-America at 174 pounds last year, entered the tournament as the second seed behind Stevens Tech's Brandon MacWhinnie, who handed Howard his only loss of the season in dual meet competition several weeks back. He avenged that loss with a 14-5 win in the finals to improve his record to 24-1 on the year.
Howard used a 3:13 second, 16-1 technical fall to knock off Ursinus' Jordan Baumeister in the semifinals. That came after a 20-6 major decision of King's Point's Troy McGiunness.
Howard was one of three McDaniel wrestlers to the advance to the finals. Steve Colasuonno (Sachem, NY / Sachem) wrestled for the 125-pound championship, while freshman Andrew Winfield (New Windsor, MD / S. Carroll) wrestled in the 174-pound finals.
Colasuonno lost 5-3 to Ursinus' Steve Kingsland, the second seed at 125. Winfield fell by a score of 4-3 to Johns Hopkins' David Kraus, the second seeded wrestler at that weight.
Wrestling up at 197 pounds, Cory Beall (Hagerstown, MD / Northwest was McDaniel's only bronze medalist. Two grapplers finished in fourth place to land McDaniel in second place in the team standings with 68 points. McDaniel barely edged out Muhlenberg with 67.5 points. Ursinus won its fourth consecutive Conference title with 98.5 points.
Howard will advance on to the NCAA Division III National Championships, which will be hosted by The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey, beginning on March 4th. He may bump into MacWhinnie again. He was awarded the Centennial Conference's lone wild card to compete at the National Championships.

WRESTlLING: #25 McDaniel 22, #10 Delaware Valley 17
BEL AIR, Md. - #25 McDaniel College (1-0) won three of the first four bouts to upset #10 Delaware Valley (0-1) 22-17 in the first dual meet of the season for both teams. McDaniel swept the upper half of the middleweights to pull away from the Aggies in a non-conference dual held at John Carroll High School in Harford County.
Steve Colasuonno's (Holtsville, NY/Sachem, NY) major decision over Adam Olin at 125 pounds was followed by a 10-8 overtime decision by Rob Willey (Baltimore / McDonogh) to give McDaniel a quick 7-0 lead. The Aggies cut it to 10-8 following Ryan Herwig's major decision over McDaniel's Zach Hetrick (Hanover, PA / Southwestern).
Then Delaware Valley ran into the strength of McDaniel's lineup. The nation's second ranked wrestler at 165 pounds, Tony Howard (Rockville, MD / Magruder), worked a 4-2 decision over Justin Powell. That was followed by Andrew Winfield's (New Windsor, MD / S. Carroll) win.
Winfield, a sophomore transfer from Penn State, pinned Ryan Pope in the third period to give McDaniel an 11-point cushion. Delaware Valley was poised to climb back into the match heading into the final two bouts when Paul Donnell ran out to a 9-3 lead on McDaniel's Sucba Steve Jennings (Baltimore / Pallotti) in the 174-pound bout, but Jennings rallied for a 12-11 win to put the match out of reach.
"I am proud of, but not shocked by the way we wrestled tonight," said head coach Sam Gardner. "After the 53-0 drubbing they put on us two years ago, I probably would have been pleased with it being respectable, but we showed grit and wrestled like we know we can. No one showed more grit than Jennings rallying to seal the win."
The Aggies swept the night's final pair of bouts gaining a decision and a pin.
With the win, McDaniel starts its dual meet season at 1-0, while the Aggies fall to 0-1 in head-to-head competition. The Green Terror returns to action on Saturday when McDaniel hosts the Sam Case Green Terror Duals. Festivities get underway in the Gill Center at 9:00am.

McDaniel
Announces Wrestling Class of 2009
WESTMINSTER, Md. McDaniel College wrestling coach Sam Gardner is pleased to announce the Green Terror's recruiting class for 2005. "Our goals for recruiting were two-fold this year," said Gardner. "We wanted to add depth throughout the line-up, and we wanted to bring in kids who could immediately contribute substantial team-points where we had either failed to score consistently last year, or had lost someone to graduation. I believe we accomplished both of those goals."
Returning All-American Tony Howard (Magruder H.S.) plans to drop from 174lbs. back down to the 165 lb weight-class in pursuit of an NCAA Championship. Stepping in at 174 should be South Carroll graduate and Penn State transfer, Andrew Winfield. Winfield, a 2004 Maryland State Champion, was 28-12 while wrestling unattached for the Nittany Lions as a freshman.
At 197 lbs. Mark Esmont, a transfer from Div. II powerhouse Ashland University, will look to score big points using his go-for-broke pinning style. Esmont finished 2nd and 3rd in the Maryland States for Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, where 31 of his 34 wins his senior year came by fall.
"197 is a weight we've struggled to score points at since NCAA All-American Chris McNally graduated in 2002. I believe Mark can help us rectify that problem," said Gardner.
State Champion, and four-time finalist, Rob Willey (McDonogh) will look to take the place of three-time Centennial Conference Champion Dan Patterson at 133 lbs. Willey had a 33-5 record as a senior, and in addition to winning the Maryland Independent School State title, finished in 2nd place at the prestigious National Prep tournament held at Lehigh University.
"Rob is a tough kid who learned how to train hard at McDonogh under the tutelage of Pete Welch and Joe Bakewell. I believe he can make the transfer from high school to college wrestling," said Gardner.
Adding depth at 157 and 165 lbs will be two-time Kansas state place winner Courtney Nightengale (Cimmarron H.S.) and Pennsylvania state qualifier Zach Hetrick from Southwestern High School in Hanover.
"Both of these guys are strong, prototypical wrestler-types. They'll have some excellent wrestlers to train with in the room, and I believe they'll be two of the corner stones of our program for years to come," posited Gardner.

Takes Fourth at Sam Case Green Terror Duals
WESTMINSTER, Md. McDaniel College took fourth place amongst the 11 competing teams at the Dr. H. Samuel Case Green Terror duals held Saturday at the Gill Center. The United States Naval Academy's teams took first and second place in the dual meet tournament, while McDaniel fell to Thiel in the consolation finals on the seventh criteria to break a 24-24 tie.
McDaniel defeated Washington & Jefferson in the opening round 32-21. Dan Patterson (Sykesville, MD / S. Carroll) recorded the first of his four pins on the day when the official slapped the mat at 1:32 of the first period to close out his bout with Mark Day.
Patterson recorded three first period pins on the day, and picked us his fourth pin with five seconds remaining in the second period against Lee Beatty of Thiel.
The Terror utilized six pins and a technical fall to go with two forfeits in picking up a 57-0 win over Elizabethtown. It was the Terror's first shutout since the team blanked Howard University in 2000.
McDaniel was ousted from the semi-final bracket by one of Navy's two teams in the meet. Patterson and junior transfer Tony Howard (Rockville, MD / Magruder) picked up McDaniel's only wins in the match. Howard, like Patterson, went 4-0 on the day with three pins and a technical fall to his credit.
The Terror split bouts at five a side with Thiel in the Consolation Finals, with each team getting three pins running the 24-24 score through the litany of tie-breaking criteria before getting to "Criteria G" in the manual, the greater number of near fall points in the match. Thiel held a 14-9 edge to take third place in the tournament.
