Mercyhurst Captures Eight Victories in 32-6 Win Over Gannon
ERIE, PA - The Mercyhurst wrestling team opened a 29-0 lead after seven matches and defeated rival Gannon 32-6 Friday evening in the War At The Shore II, hosted at the Erie Civic Center.
The 'Hurst won the first four bouts by either a technical fall or major decision, jumping out to an early 17-0 advantage. Payne Lint opened the contest with a technical fall at 125. Braxdon Scaletta (133), J.J. Zanetta (141), and Brian Pogel (149) followed with consecutive major decisions.
Andy Lamancusa and Hudson Harrison continued the Mercyhurst run with decisions at 157 and 165. Zach Schafer capped the early domination with a pin at the 2:18 mark of the 174-pound match.
Pino Scavella (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) finally stopped the momentum with a 7-2 victory over Trevor Gallo at 184. Chris Wolski (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) followed with a 3-1 decision against Kyle Meyer at 197, cutting the Mercyhurst lead to 29-6.
Mercyhurst completed its 32-6 victory with Kenny Bluska's 3-0 shutout in the heavyweight bout.
Gannon dropped to 0-1 in dual competition. Mercyhurst, ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, improved to 1-4. The Golden Knights return to action Wednesday, December 6 at Mercyhurst-North East. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
