Dragon Wrestling Adds Seven to 2011-12 Roster

MOORHEAD, Minn. - Head Coach Kris Nelson and the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon wrestling program announce the signing of seven student-athletes to the 2011-12 roster.

The additions include Matthew Doom (Paynesville, Minn./Paynesville), Deven Loepp (Oakes, N.D./Oakes), Lucas Moderow (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South), Jesse Munos (St. Paul, Minn./South Saint Paul), Zach Odden-Lemar (Casselton, N.D./Central Cass), Raymond Orwig (Ellendale, N.D./Ellendale) and Mario Tuccitto (St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul).

Doom is projected to wrestle at 174 pounds. He was a Minnesota State High School class A runner-up at 171 pounds as a senior after qualifying for the State Tournament in his junior season. Doom had a 36-4 record in 2010-11 and 22-3 tally at 160 pounds in his junior season.

"Matt is a very hard nosed wrestler who is very aggressive in the top position," Nelson said. "We will look at him as the future of Dragon wrestling."

Loepp, a 2011 gradutea of OHS, was a two-time North Dakota State High School Champion at 125 pounds. In his senior season he put up a 38-1 record. He is projected to wrestle at 125 or 133 pounds for Coach Nelson.

"Deven will battle for the starting spot at 133 pounds in his true freshman year," Nelson said. "He is a very aggressive wrestler that is always on the offense and that is what we are looking for in our wrestlers."

Moderow was a three-time North Dakota State High School Championships participant, placing fourth as a senior and sixth both years prior. In 2011 he wrestled at 171 pounds, in 2010 was at 160 pounds and took sixth place at State at 145 pounds as a sophomore. Coach Nelson projects he will wrestle at 174 pounds.

"Lucas comes to us from a great program at Fargo South," Nelson said. "The skills he learned in high school will help him have an easy transition into our system this coming year."

Munos wrestled for South St. Paul at the Minnesota State High School Championships in both his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, he was the runner up at the class AA level at 152 pounds. He took fifth in 2010, at 145 pounds. His projected weight class will be 157 pounds.

"Jesse is a very hard worker that has great balance and athleticism," Nelson said. "He wrestled in a very strong weight class at the State Championships, which we feel will make him ready to compete and make an impact at the college level."

Odden-Lemar, projected to wrestle the heavyweight slot, is the current North Dakota High School class B Champion at the heavyweight class after putting up a 38-1 record in his senior season. He was the runner up at 215 pounds in both 2010 and 2009. Odden-Lemar was also the National Runner-Up at the Asics Folk-style Nationals in 2011. He had finished fourth at the National competition the year prior.

"Zach is very athletic for the heavyweight weight class," Nelson said. "He moves well for a big guy and is always on the offense looking to get another takedown."

Orwig represented EHS at the North Dakota State High School Championships in the past two seasons, where he wrestled at 160 pounds in 2010 and 171 pounds in 2011. He placed third in 2011 and seventh during his junior year. He is projected two wrestle at 174 or 184 pounds.

"Raymond has been working hard in the offseason by competing in freestyle and greco tournaments," Nelson said. "He is physically very strong and we can see him developing into an 184 pound wrestler later in his career."

Tuccitto will go between the 125 and 133 pound weight classes at MSUM. he was a Minnesota State High School Championships participant in 2011 at 125 pounds.

"Mario will add depth in our lower weight classes in his first year at MSUM," Nelson said. "He has a great work ethic that should pay off for him in his career here."

MSU-Moorhead Signs Robert Otterness

Dragons Solidfy Long Term Depth In Lower Weights

MOORHEAD, Minn. - After adding depth to the upper weights, the Minnesota State University Moorhead Wrestling team added future talent to the lower weights by signing on Robert Otterness to the team.

Otterness will join the Dragons after completing his senior year at Cannon Falls High School. Robert had a great final season with CFHS, finishing with a record of 37-10 at 135 pounds. His career mark stands at 130-54 overall.

Last summer, Otterness placed eighth at the Junior Nationals wrestling tournament at the Fargodome, where he plans to return to this year to place even higher. Otterness will be projected to wrestle at either 133 or 141 pounds for the Dragons.

Next season, the Dragons plan to redshirt Otterness who can wrestle as an unattached wrestler, in order to have him ready to push for a starting position on the team for the 2011-2012 season.

At the Minnesota/U.S.A. Junior State Greco tournament in 2009, Otterness finished with a second place finish. This season at Cannon Falls, he placed sixth in the Minnesota state tournament at 135 pounds.

With his immediate future not fully set in stone, the Dragons look to Otterness to give them long-term success at the lower weight divisions.
Nelson Recruiting Big On Trail for Minnesota State University Moorhead's Wrestling

MOORHEAD, Minn. - First year Head Coach Kris Nelson ended the 2009-10 campaign with a successful postseason run that included some unlikely heroes. Nelson went to work on the recruiting trail, adding key members to the upper weight classes, including local heavyweight standout Gerad Fugleberg.

Fugleberg finished his career at Fargo South High School with a record of 108-24. His finishes to each season improved dramatically as he continued through high school, placing sixth at the North Dakota State Tournament at 215 pounds as a sophomore.

Fugleberg found his way to the heavyweight championship his junior season, taking second at the tournament. His senior season he won it all, becoming the heavyweight champion to cap off a stellar career.

For the past two seasons Fugleberg was the team's captain and also captained the Bruins football team as well. He finished with the second most pins in school history behind Eric Forde. Fugleberg was also a state Freestyle and Greco champion in the junior division.

Nelson also built on the 197-pound weight class by signing on Brandon Manderschied. Manderschied ended his high school career this season as the Minnesota State Champion at 215 pounds.

Manderschied also finished third at the Minnesota/USA Junior State Greco championships at 215 pounds. Manderschied will help give Nelson a future starter who will learn early on from veteran Jon Swart.

Both Brandon and Gerad competed at the high school national tournament this past spring in Virginia.

The Dragons also signed on Kody Kalkbrenner from Litchfield who finished his career with a 95-24 record. Kalkbrenner is a two-time Minnesota State Tournament participant, placing third at the tournament this past season. Kody was a three-time Wright Country Conference selection.

Kalkbrenner excelled as a Greco and Freestyle wrestler. Kalkbrenner was a Greco State Champion at 189 pounds in 2009 and was a member of the Junior Nationals team as well.

Kalkbrenner is expected to compete at 184 pounds for the Dragons next season. Coach Nelson has already set the expectations for the young recruits.

"All three wrestlers will add talent to our upper weights," Head Coach Nelson said. "I am looking for all three to challenge for starting positions in their first year."

Nelson pointed out at the end of the season that a he needs a full year commitment from his wrestlers and plans to throw all three recruits right into the mix.

"Brandon, Kody and Gerad are all committed to year-round training which will help them transition from high school to Division-II wrestling." Nelson said.

All three recruits will plan on competing at the Junior Nationals that are held at the Fargodome this summer.

Joining the recruits will be Trent Sovde who transfers to MSU-Moorhead from NCAA Division-I North Dakota State University. Sovde went 9-7 in 2008 as an unattached wrestler and then posting a 7-13 record as a freshman in 2009.

Before joining the Bison, Sovde established a winning tradition at Greenbush-Middle River High School where he captured the 2007 Minnesota State Championship at 160 pounds after finishing second in 2006 as a 145-pounder. Sovde wrapped up his high school career with a 137-36 record.

Sovde posted a 2-4 record last year at 174 pounds and is expected to continue wrestling at the same weight class for the Dragons in 2010. Sovde will be competing for a spot in the weight class left vacant by the departure of senior Jarret Hall this past season.
Minnesota State University Moorhead's All-American Bomstad Places Sixth at Nationals

OMAHA, Neb. - The final round of the NCAA Division-II National Championships started at Nebraska-Omaha and junior Derek Bomstad looked to rebound from a close loss and win out in the third place bracket. Bomstad's efforts in the tournament paid off as the junior placed sixth overall and came away with All-American honors.

Bomstad started the late session with match up against Thomas Hepburn (Nebraska-Kearney). Hepburn won a close match with a 3-2 decision and Bomstad moved on to the fifth place match against Minnesota State Mankato's Travis Elg.

Elg gained a pin of Bomstad at the 1:12 mark of the match to secure fifth while Bomstad placed sixth. Bomstad's two wins early in the tournament made him eligible for All-American honors.

Bomstad was joined by four other Dragons in the tournament in Kris Nelson's first year as Head Coach of Dragons wrestling. The Dragons finished the season ranked No. 19 in the nation after the regional tournament.

No. 19 Minnesota State University Moorhead Heads To NCAA Division II National Championships

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships begin on Friday on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Omaha. First-year Head Coach Kris Nelson looks to lead his No. 19 Dragon squad to a successful tournament.

The Dragons reached the national rankings with an impressive showing at the Super III Regionals in Aberdeen, S.D. The Dragons finished fifth in the team standings but sent five wrestlers to the D-II National Tournament.

Among the wrestlers are seniors Jarret Hall at 174 pounds and Tim Johnson at 285 pounds, juniors Derek Bomstad at 149 pounds and Brady Schneeberger at 141 pounds and sophomore Corey Ulmer at 125 pounds. Hall and Johnson placed third at regionals, the same finish both wrestlers achieved last season to advance to the national tournament.

Sophomore Corey Ulmer, the youngest of the qualifiers, will face a regional champion to begin his tournament action at 125 pounds. Juniors Derek Bomstad and Brady Schneeberger both reached the finals in at regionals.

Bomstad took second at 149 pounds and will face a third-place finisher at regionals. Schneeberger, unranked but wrestling at his strongest, became the only unranked regional champion at the regional tournament. For his efforts, Schneeberger will face a fourth place finisher in the opening round.

The first round begins at 11 a.m. on Friday with the first and second rounds starting at 6 p.m. The third session, which includes the championship semifinals, third round consolation and consolation semifinals, starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The national champions of each weight class will be crowned starting at 8 p.m.
Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons Send Five To Nationals, Schneeberger Stuns NSIC

ABERDEEN, S.D. - On Friday, Head Coach Kris Nelson boldly predicted that junior Brady Schneeberger and the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons would surprise many at the Super III Regionals in Aberdeen, S.D. His prediction came true, as Schneeberger will join four other Dragons who qualified for the national tournament.

The Dragons came into the regional tournament with many skeptics in a conference widely considered to be the best in NCAA Division-II wrestling. While Augustana College came away with the team title, the Dragons met and exceeded expectations, placing fifth with a team total of 73 points.

The Dragons sent five wrestlers to the nation tournament in 2009, and did so again in 2010. Sophomore Corey Ulmer (125 pounds), juniors Derek Bomstad (149 pounds) and Schneeberger (141 pounds) will each make their first trip to nationals while seniors Tim Johnson and Jarret Hall will make a return. Johnson and Hall both finished the regionals with a third place finish, the same finish both wrestlers had at last year's regionals.

The night would start at 125 pounds as Ulmer picked up a 6-2 decision over Trent Herold of St. Cloud State but fell in a 4-6 decision to No. 1 Tyler Mumbulo who would later win the weight class. Ulmer gained a bye in the third place bracket and defeated Matt Garcia in an 8-6 decision. In the third place match Ulmer lossed to No. 3 Alex Meger of Augustana in a 2-3 decision. Ulmer finished the night with a fourth place finish and advances to nationals.

Not many eyebrows were raised until Schneeberger took the mat at 141 pounds against No. 3 Robby Fischer of Minnesota State Mankato. Schneeberger caught a lot of attention after he stunned Fischer with an 8-6 decision. After Benton Crow of Northern State upset No. 2 Gabriel Suarez of St. Cloud State, Schneeberger schooled Crow in a 17-1 technical fall at the 4:39 mark of the semi-final match.

Schneeberger would not lose sight of his goal, as he took on his toughest opponent on the season in his biggest match of the season, No. 1 Jay Scherer of Augustana in the championship match.

Schneeberger held a slight edge over Scherer as the match went into the third period. Scherer took down Schneeberger with only 26 seconds to go, giving him a 7-5 lead.

Scherer, instead of riding out Schneeberger, got overconfident and decided to go for the pin. Schneeberger crafted a daring move and flattened Scherer's shoulders and pinned the favorite at the 6:45 mark of his match. The unranked and underrated Schneeberger stunned the NSIC and will move onto the national tournament as the regional champion at 141 pounds.

Defeating unlikely opponents became a trend for the middle weight classes as Derek Bomstad followed Schneeberger's momentum in the 149-pound weight class. Bomstad, after a bye in the opening round, took on No. 2 Derek Stolarzyk of Upper Iowa. Bomstad would also pull off an upset as he defeated Stolarzyk in a 4-3 decision to advance to the finals. There he would face his toughest opponent on the season, Augustana's No. 1 ranked Nate Herda.

Late in the third period, Herda and Bomstad traded takedowns and escapes but Herda's takedown in the final period forced Bomstad to begin looking for a shooting attempt to takedown Herda but couldn't get his late chances to capitalize and Bomstad finished with a second place finish, again as an unranked wrestler in a bracket that featured five ranked opponents.

Hall looked to return to the national tournament after qualifying last season with a third place result. Hall, with only four matches under his belt before this year's regionals (3-1 record), looked to make more noise for the Dragons.

No. 5 Hall took the early match against No. 4 Ben Becker of Minnesota State Mankato. Hall busted out early and dominated Becker with a 12-0 major decision. Hall ran into No. 1 Mitch Norton of Upper Iowa who came off a 22-4 technical fall over Phillip Downs of Northern State in the first round. Hall and Norton battled through two periods but Norton gained a slight edge over Hall and was granted the pin at the 6:10 mark.

Hall would not lose after that match. Hall took out frustrations of an early defeat on William Fate of Southwest Minnesota State. Hall earned a 6-2 decision over Fate to advance to the third place match. There Hall would find himself in a rematch of the opening round against Becker, and the results didn't change by much. Hall again shut out Becker with a 5-0 decision to advance to the national tournament for the second straight time as a Dragon.

Johnson came into his opening match as the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 285 pounds. Johnson disposed of Aaron Cramer of Upper Iowa, pinning Cramer at the 3:43 mark of the match. In the semi-finals, Johnson locked up against No. 2 Jake Kahnke of St. Cloud State. Johnson got an early escape but could not get more as Kahnke moved on with a 9-1 major decision.

Johnson, as Hall did at 174 pounds, would not lose again. Johnson took on No. 5 Lance Peters of Augustana in the semi-finals of the third place bracket. Johnson pinned Peters at the 3:46 mark to move on to the third place finals against No. 4 Brian Rodas who also came off a pin in the previous round. Johnson would outwork Rodas as he did when the two faced off in the regular season when Johnson won 5-2. Johnson would take his third place match over Rodas with a 5-3 decision.

The Dragons surprised many with their resiliency and toughness. At one time, the Dragons had seven wrestlers in position to qualify for nationals. The Dragons now set their sights on the national tournament where first year Head Coach Kris Nelson will take Ulmer, Schneeberger, Bomstad, Hall and Johnson as qualifiers to the NCAA Division-II National Championships on March 12-13 inside Sapp Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Minnesota State University Moorhead Defeat Cross Town Rival Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons took on their cross town rival Concordia Cobbers at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The Dragons got out to an early lead and quickly put the match out of reach and secured a big win 22-18.

The Dragons faced their fourth nationally ranked team in a row, facing the No. 7 NCAA Division-III Cobbers. The match started at the heavyweight class and senior Tim Johnson would set the tone for the Dragons. Johnson came out in a flurry, taking down the Cobber's Nick Nadeau just 19 seconds into the match.

After a Nadeau escape Johnon got his second takedown a minute later and crafted a three-point nearfall. Johnson gained an escape to start the second period and took down Nadeau right after and would pin Nadeau at the 3:09 mark to gain his 14 win.

Sophomore Corey Ulmer would not let the momentum be stopped as he took on Ben Presler. After a Presler takedown in the first period, Ulmer would gain a takedown of his own in the second. Presler would take a neutral position to start the third and Ulmer took advantage, gaining another takedown with 23 seconds remaining. A stalling penalty on Presler would give Ulmer a 5-3 decision.

Junior Brady Schneeberger would get one of the more impressive wins in the match when he took on No. 4 Ben Anderson. Anderson gained an early takedown but would not last as Schneeberger reversed Anderson and crafted a three-point nearfall with only a second remaining in the first period. A Schneeberger escape in the third gave the junior a good enough cushion to withstand an Anderson takedown and held on for a 6-5 decision.

The win stops a five-dual losing streak and gives the Dragons a 2-1 record at home. The win put the Dragons record at 4-9 on the season as they drop Concordia's record to 11-5 on the season. The Dragons remain at home as they take on Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs Friday at 7 p.m.

The Mustang dual is the Dragons Wrestling Endowment dual. All admission goes to the John Sterner Endowment Fund which benefits Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling scholarships.

Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons Lead Does Not Hold Against #4 Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks

Mankato, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon wrestling team took off from Fayette, Iowa and headed towards Minnesota State Mankato for an NSIC matchup with the No. 4 ranked Mavericks. The Dragons fought back closer than the score would indicate, losing the dual 25-8.

The Dragons would jump out to an early lead after junior Evan Forde beat Mankato's Matt Nyvold at 133 pounds. Forde scored a quick takedown one minute into the match, then followed up with two near falls just 32 seconds apart, and suddenly Forde was out to a 8-0 lead.

Forde chose down to start the second frame and with in 15 seconds, reversed Nyvold and scored his third three-point near fall of the match and his fourth overall near fall, winning by technical fall 15-0 at the 3:57 mark.

The Mavericks would retake the team lead after a Robby Fisher 8-1 decision over junior Brady Schneeberger. But the Dragons would retake the lead for a second time when junior Derek Bomstad defeated the Maverick's Travis Elg in the highest scoring contest of the night.

Bomstad scored two takedowns with in the first 49 seconds of the match. Elg would tie things up a minute later with a takedown of his own but was quickly reversed by Bomstad and the junior lead 6-4 after on period. Bomstad chose down to start the second period and quickly mastered two escapes fighting through Elg's pesky takedowns and scored a takedown of his own. As the period ran down Elg escaped but was once again taken down by Bomstad with one second remaining. Elg and Bomstad continued to joust for points, reversing and taking down each other in rapid succession. But Bomstad's late escape and takedown, paired with riding time netted him an 18-11 decision.

The Mavericks would retake the lead and not look back, sealing the win with the No. 1 ranked heavyweight in the nation, Brady Wilson his 19 victory of the season. The Dragons impressed first year head coach Kris Nelson, wrestling much more competitively than the night before. Coach Nelson was also impressed with the MSUM wrestlers who did not win, noting their toughness as a sign of improvement.

The Dragons loss drops to 3-8 on the season (1-3 NSIC). The win brings the Mavericks record up to 6-1 on the season (1-0 NSIC) The Dragons return home to face St. Cloud State Huskies Friday, January 22 at 7 p.m. inside Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Minnesota State University Moorhead Unable To Move Upper Iowa University

Fayette, Iowa - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons took on the No. 6 seed Upper Iowa University Peacocks on the first night of back-to-back duals, both against nationally ranked opponents. The Dragons ran into one of the toughest opponents they will face and fell 48-0.

The Peacocks brought out their full arsenal feature five nationally ranked wrestlers. Tallen Wald nearly had the first Dragon win of the night as he wrestled Justin Decker at 157 pounds. Wald escaped late in the third period but lossed on riding time and a 2-1 decision. Junior Jon Swart looked to rebound shortly after at 197 pounds against Nick Shandri. Swart managed three escapes in the final round and also gained a point on an Upper Iowa stall but the deficit was too much and Swart fell to a 5-4 decision. The Dragons fought back as best they could but simply could not get an initial spark and their hopes of an upset fizzled out.

The loss drops the Dragons to 3-7 on the season (1-2 NSIC). The win will push the Peacocks to 9-1 on the season (3-0 NSIC). The Dragons schedule only gets tougher as they must face the No. 4 ranked Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks in Mankato at 7 p.m. The Dragons will look for a big upset before returning home for the rest of the season.
