Roger Williams Wrestling Update
Hello and Happy New Year! Sorry it has taken me some time to get going with the updates again, but as you know, we have been very busy since returning on the 30th with two practices most days. The team is working hard and things are going very well. Here is some information for you:
1) Elizabethtown Tri: We crushed Scranton, but lost to a very solid Elizabethtown team. I think shutting out Scranton hurt us a little bit against E-town as we did not wrestle as well as I think we could have. Thank you to Martin Mitchell's family for providing a great deal of food and drink for us, as well as the Ernst family. Those are always very much appreciated by the team.
2) Williams Invite: A good day despite missing three key starters. I will forward the press release from this event. We left Williams thinking we finished second and I actually have the trophy in my office, only to find out on the bus ride back that we were third because of a scoring error. No big deal really. Kyle Rodgers, Phil Ernst and Nick Cambi had solid days taking second. Thank you to Kevin Edward's mom and dad for bringing food and drink.
3) Intersession Charges: Just wanted to remind you from a previous e-mail that the Intersession room and board charge will appear on your bill, but usually by the end of the month there will be a credit posted to clear that charge. If early February comes around and the credit is not posted, please let me know.
4) Wesleyan tri-meet: Friday January 15 we wrestle at Wesleyan in a tri-meet starting at 4PM. We wrestle Wesleyan first and then Trinity right after. We are expecting a lot of exhibition matches with Wesleyan having as big a team as we have and Trinity has a few extras as well. This will be a tough day for me as I will not be at the meet, I will be wearing my other "hat". Wednesday morning I fly to Atlanta for the NCAA Convention. I will be representing the President and the University thru Saturday at the Convention as the NCAA takes care of their annual business. In my 29-year wrestling coaching career this will be the first meet that I miss! L The team will be in the capable hands of acting head coach CJ McCormack and assistants Andrew Hawley and Scottie Pellerin. I expect a lot of text messages, probably by the minute! A few parent's have offered to bring things for after the match, I will e-mail all of you separately so you can coordinate.
5) Fall Semester Grades: A very good semester for us. Seven guys are now eligible to be academic all-americans. Our team GPA will be the highest it has ever been for national Team GPA ward consideration. Half the team had a GPA of 3.0 or better and several returnees had their best semesters yet. We did have a few guys who struggled and we are working on getting them up to speed with the rest of the team. In our locker room we post the top ten GPA's and the bottom ten and it is great to see that some of the bottom ten actually have GPA's above 2.7, which is a B- and pretty good.
6) Wrestler of Week: Phil Ernst was named Pilgrim League wrestler of the week for last week.
7) Stats: I have attached our latest stats.
Hope you have a great week. Hope to see you at the New England Duals on January 24. Dave

Dave Kemmy named Roger Williams University Interim Athletic Director
BRISTOL, R.I. – Vice President for Student Affairs John King has announced that Dave Kemmy, Assistant Athletic Director for Administration and Wrestling Head Coach, will be named the Interim Athletic Director of the RWU Department of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation for the 2009-10 academic year. “Dave Kemmy brings significant intercollegiate experience to this interim position and I am confident he will provide strong leadership, “ said King.
“I’m excited and looking forward to the challenge,” said Kemmy. “I want to thank Vice President King for giving me the opportunity to continue some of the great things that are happening here. It’s a great staff and I’m looking forward to a very successful 2009-10 academic year.”
Kemmy will be in charge of directing and developing the University’s 20 athletic programs, as well as intramurals and recreational services. He will take over for former Athletic Director George Kolb, who vacated the position in February to accept the title of Assistant Vice President for Athletics Development at his alma mater, Villanova University.
Kemmy has spent the past 15 years as Assistant Athletic Director for Administration, responsible for coordinating all team schedules, travel, and game officials, in addition to his oversight of athletic budgets. He first came to Roger Williams in 1990 as the Director of Sports Information, Intramurals, and Recreation. He served as the first Head Coach of the Women’s Soccer program for five years before becoming the Wrestling Head Coach in 1994. Prior to RWU, Kemmy worked at Rhode Island College for six years as the Sports Information Director and Men’s Soccer Head Coach.
Kemmy will serve as Interim Athletic Director while continuing his duties as Wrestling Head Coach. The University will conduct its nationwide search for a full-time Athletic Director later this fall. The chosen candidate will begin their duties with an expected start date of July 1, 2010.
