Amuchastegui Named Academic All-America of the Year

The junior boasts a 3.98 GPA in mechanical engineering.

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford wrestler Nick Amuchastegui has been tabbed the Capital One Men's At-Large Academic All-America of the Year, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today.

Amuchastegui, a first team selection, earns his second career Academic All-America honors as he was named to the second team in 2010. At the NCAA Championships, the junior was presented with the second-annual NCAA Elite 88 Award, given at the championships to the student-athlete with the highest GPA (he won the inaugural award in 2010). He is also a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic First Team selection and has twice earned academic honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

A mechanical engineering major with a 3.98 GPA, Amuchastegui became just the second Cardinal wrestler to ever reach the NCAA finals. The Talent, Ore., native finished as the NCAA runner-up at 174 pounds, earning his second consecutive All-America honors. He ended the season with a 31-4 overall record, marking the best record on the team. Amuchastegui was also the Pac-10 runner-up at 174 pounds, finishing in the top-2 at the conference tournament for the third straight year.

Stanford was one of just two schools with multiple selections on the first team. Junior swimmer Bobby Bollier and senior men's water polo player Sage Wright joined Amuchastegui as first team selections.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.

Stanford's Incoming Wrestling Class Ranked No. 24 Nationally

The seven-man class will join the Cardinal this fall.

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford head wrestling coach Jason Borrelli is pleased to announce the seven freshmen that will join the Cardinal team this fall. The class has been rated No. 24 in the nation by both wrestling insider newsmagazine and theopenmat.com.

The class is comprised of Dahlton Brown (Jackson, Calif./Argonaut), Josh Lauderdale (Nine Mile Falls, Wash./Lakeside), Alex Manley (Chattanooga, Tenn./The Baylor School), Alex Paraschuk (Fort Myers, Fla./Riverdale), Evan Silver (Chevy Chase, Md./Blair Academy), Michael Sojka (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) and Brendan Ter Wee (Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon).

"This class brings a long list of accolades from all across the country and I would argue that it is as good of a class as any in division one wrestling," said Borrelli. "This class adds much needed depth at many weight classes which will certainly help us build upon our program best 11th-place NCAA finish."

The seven-man class is led by Silver, the No. 25 overall recruit in 2011, and Sojka, ranked No. 5 at 215 pounds. The group has combined to win 10 state championships, as well as, two runner-up finishes and five third-place marks. Bringing home state titles were Silver (4), Sojka (2), Manley (2), Lauderdale (1) and Paraschuk (1).

"I really look forward to getting this group on campus in the fall," said Borrelli. "There is a good chance that some of them will be called upon to step right in as true freshmen and I am very confident that each could handle the challenge. We strongly believe that each has tremendous upside for the collegiate level and that their best wrestling is ahead of them."

Silver will likely compete at 125 pounds for the Cardinal. He is a four-time state champion and held the No. 1 ranking in the nation for two seasons during his prep career. He posted a 130-10 record at Blair Academy, where he was tabbed the 2011 National Prep Wrestler of the Year.

Sojka comes to The Farm as a two-time Illinois state champion and a four-time state placer. He will compete for the 197 pounds spot in the Cardinal lineup next season. Sojka posted an 82-0 record over his final two seasons at Winnebago High School, setting a new career wins record for the school (160-7). He was named to the 2011 USA Wrestling All-America Team and was twice nominated by IWCOA as Illinois Class 1A wrestler of the year.

Paraschuk is a five-time state placer from Florida, capturing the state title in 2011. The five-time conference champion holds the Riverdale High School career record for reversals. He will vie for time in the Cardinal lineup at 141 pounds in 2011-12.

Manley is a two-time state champion and five-time state finalist out of Tennessee. He secured state titles as a junior and senior, while becoming the all-time career wins leader in Tennessee state history (229-14). A two-time high school academic All-American, Manley will be listed at 133/141 pounds for the Cardinal next season.

Lauderdale is a four-time state placer, winning the Washington state title as a senior in 2011. He posted a 129-22 prep record, recording 74 pins in the process. The four-time regional champion will push for the 149 pounds spot in the Cardinal lineup this fall.

Ter Wee is a two-time state placer out of Iowa, finishing third and sixth in his final two seasons at West Lyon High School. He posted a career prep record of 117-24 with 54 pins and will look to take over the heavyweight slot in the Cardinal lineup next season.

Brown, who will be listed at 197/285 pounds next year, compiled a 139-44 career prep record with 89 pins at Argonaut High School. He set a school and county record by becoming the first ever four-time league champion. As a senior in 2011, he went 35-5 with 27 pins and was voted the team's MVP.

The Cardinal is coming off arguably the best season in school history. Borrelli, who was in his third year with the program in 2010-11, led Stanford to a school-best 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. The team posted a 9-9-1 dual record and sent four wrestlers to nationals. Junior Nick Amuchastegui (174 pounds) became just the second Cardinal wrestler to reach the NCAA finals, while senior Zack Giesen and sophomore Ryan Mango finished sixth at 197 pounds and 125 pounds, respectively. The trio earned All-America honors, the most ever in a season for Stanford.

Stanford Finishes Eighth at Reno Tournament of Champions

The Cardinal had three placewinners on the day.

STANFORD, Calif. - Behind two tournament champions and a fourth-place finish, the Stanford wrestling team finished eighth with 65.0 points at the 2010 Reno Tournament of Champions, Sunday, in Reno, Nev.

There he defeated top-seeded Erik Schuth of Ohio, 8-2.

In the 174 pound bracket, Amuchastegui, seeded No. 1, swept through his competition without giving up a point to improve to a perfect 12-0 on the season. Stanford Comes Up Short Against No. 17 Northwestern, 18-16

The Cardinal won five of the 10 bouts Sunday.

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team fell short, 18-16, against 17th-ranked Northwestern in its season opener, Sunday, in front of a packed house at Burnham Pavilion. The dual was originally scheduled to be outdoors at the Taube Tennis Center, but inclement weather in the Bay Area forced the teams indoors.

The dual began at 174 pounds. Stanford junior Nick Amuchastegui, ranked sixth nationally, registered a 14-2 major decision over Brian Roddy. The win gave the Cardinal an early 4-0 lead in the dual.

Stanford remained in the lead despite sophomore Spence Patrick's 4-0 loss to Northwestern's Aaron Jones at 184 pounds. Senior Zack Giesen, ranked 11th in the nation, increased the Cardinal's lead in the dual to 7-3. The Grants Pass, Ore., native posted a 13-8 decision over Marcus Shrewsbury.

Senior heavyweight Dylan Rush continued to register points for Stanford as he pulled out a 3-2 decision over the Wildcats' Ben Kuhar. The deciding factor in the bout was Rush's one point for riding time. Northwestern pulled within four of Stanford, 10-6, as second-ranked Brandon Precin edged the Cardinal's 125-pounder Ryan Mango, ranked 15th nationally, 5-4.

Redshirt sophomore Matt Sencenbaugh, wrestling at 133 pounds, registered a 5-2 decision over Bobby Joyce to put the Cardinal on top 13-6. However, Northwestern won the next three bouts to capture the lead, 18-13.

In the final bout of the dual, Stanford senior Lucas Espericueta needed a fall to give the Cardinal the victory. The 165-pounder failed to secure a pin, but recorded a 15-8 decision over Northwestern's Robert Kellogg.

Stanford hits the road next week as it travels to Bakersfield, Calif., for its Pac-10 Conference opener against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners. The squads will meet on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m.

Stanford Wrestling Goes Outdoors

STANFORD, Calif. -- The squared circle meets center court when the Stanford wrestling team opens its season in a rare event: an outdoor dual meet, against Northwestern at Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Nov. 7, at 3 p.m.

Hoping to give the student body a show to rally behind, third-year coach Jason Borrelli came up with the idea to turn a wrestling meet into a social event.

"We were trying to do something that would be fun, creative, and exciting," Borrelli said. "I really want to get more than just wrestling fans to come - I want to get the student body."

The idea came from a college teammate, David Bolyard, now an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan. When Borrelli asked if his team would come for a dual meet, Bolyard jokingly replied,

"We'll come if we wrestle outside."

The comment, even in jest, stuck with Borrelli.

Consider that the NHL stages an annual outdoor Winter Classic game, selling out Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, and Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium in the past three years. There is a precedent and a novelty about staging such an indoor event outdoors.

We should stage an outdoor wrestling match, Borrelli thought. We have the climate to do it.

Borrelli recalled hearing his father, Tom, the longtime coach at Central Michigan, talk about his own college days. When Tom wrestled at The Citadel from 1975-79, their duals against rival Virginia Military Institute were held in the outdoor courtyard of The Citadel's barracks, with students watching from railings or alongside the mat.

Borrelli wanted something similar. But where? While brainstorming with assistant athletic director Earl Koberlein, it hit him: Why not the tennis stadium? The walled surface with stadium seating on three sides would be ideal for wrestling.

Next, it would take the approval of Dick Gould, the John L. Hinds Director of Tennis. A showman in his own right, Gould had pioneered indoor tennis - filling Maples Pavilion for Stanford matches in the 1970s - and recently installed an interactive high-def video screen outside the tennis stadium for public use.

"I'm delighted we could support Jason," Gould said. "It's very exciting. I just hope the weather holds."

Ah … the weather.

Borrelli has established several weather safeguards. First, he asked Northwestern to open its season two weeks earlier than usual to have a better chance at good weather. Next, he settled on the 3 p.m. starting time because evenings might be too cold. Finally, an indoor backup site has been established if there is rain.

At Taube, a tarp will be placed over the court, with the mat on top. Borrelli also is looking into the possibility of renting a three-foot high stage, and plans to invite the Stanford band and tree to add a little atmosphere.

As for the match itself, Northwestern comes in with one of the most decorated high school wrestlers in Bay Area history, Jason Welch. The three-time California state champion out of Walnut Creek's Las Lomas High is expected to wrestle Stanford's NCAA qualifier Lucas Espericueta at 157 pounds in what could be the main event.

Espericueta is one of five returning Stanford wrestlers to have competed in the NCAAs, tying the most Stanford has ever had coming into a season. Among the others is Nick Amuchastegui, a redshirt junior at 174 pounds, who finished fourth in the NCAA Championships at 165 last season, and won the Elite 88 Award for the highest grade-point average in the tournament.

Borrelli grew up at watching his father's Central Michigan dual meets - and then wrestled in them - as the program grew a following that would number as many as 5,000.

It's not unreasonable to believe that Stanford can build a regular following of 1,000-2,000, Borrelli said, as long as the student body gets behind the program. And the first opportunity is Nov. 7.

His father did it. Jason witnessed it first hand.

"It can be done," he said.
Stanford Wrestling Announces Incoming Freshman Class

The seven-man class will join the Cardinal in the Fall.

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford head wrestling coach Jason Borrelli is pleased to announce the seven freshmen that will join the Cardinal team this fall, including the younger brother of 2010 NCAA All-American Nick Amuchastegui.

The class is comprised of Luke Amuchastegui (Talent, Ore./Phoenix), Galen McCleary (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Punahou), Kyle Pollock (Wiggins, Colo./Wiggins), Garrett Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich./Big Rapids), Dan Scherer (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS), Matt Schneider (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) and Alan Yen (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga).

The seven-man class has combined to win three state championships, six runner-up finalists and six third-place finishes. Bringing home state titles were Amuchastegui (Oregon), McCleary (Hawai'i) and Scherer (Missouri).

Among the numerous awards this class has received, Pollack was honored as the 2009 male recipient of the High School Heisman. The award is presented to the nation's most esteemed high school senior male and female for excellence in academics, athletics and leadership.

The Cardinal is coming off a successful season for Borrelli, who was in his second year with the program in 2009-10. Stanford posted a 10-8-1 dual record and sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb.
Stanford's Amuchastegui Places Fourth At NCAAs, Garners First All-America Honors

The sophomore turned in a 4-2 record at his second NCAA Championships.

OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore 165-pounder Nick Amuchastegui finished fourth at the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. The Talent, Ore., native has garnered Stanford's first All-America honors since 2008.

Amuchastegui began the day with a 6-1 decision over Oklahoma's Tyler Caldwell to advance to the third-place match in the consolation bracket. There, he faced the tournament's No. 2 seed Jarrod King of Edinboro.

Amuchastegui put up a fight against King, but was unable to pull out the win, falling 3-2 to finish fourth overall. He ends his second year of The Farm with a 34-6 record, and now holds a 63-14 career mark.

Stanford Juniors Zack Giesen, Justin Paulsen Earn At-Large NCAA Berths

Stanford earns two of the 50 at-large spots announced today by the NCAA.

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford juniors Zack Giesen and Justin Paulsen are headed to the 2010 NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb. The Stanford wrestlers were among the 50 at-large selections announced today by the NCAA.

The pair will join sophomore Nick Amuchastegui and freshman Ryan Mango as the Cardinal's four representatives at the NCAA Championships. Amuchastegui captured the Pac-10 Conference title at 165 pounds, while Mango placed third at 125 pounds to earn automatic berths to the postseason.

One of the career-wins leaders in school history, Giesen finished third at this year's Pac-10 Championships at 184 pounds. He is 30-5 this season, joining Amuchastegui as the only Cardinal wrestlers to reach the 30-win mark this season. The Grants Pass, Ore., native claimed titles at the Fullerton Open and the Reno Tournament of Champions earlier this year. He has pinned three opponents in 2009-10, with his fastest fall coming in 42 seconds at the Pac-10 Tournament.

Giesen is making his third appearance at the NCAA Championships. He earned an automatic trip to the postseason as a freshman in 2006-07, but went 0-2 at the tournament. As a sophomore in 2007-08, Giesen garnered an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships, posting a 2-2 record.

Paulsen is making his first trip to the NCAA Championships after turning in his best season to date. The junior is 23-13 overall after going 11-6 in dual competition. He finished fifth at the Pac-10 Championships at 133 pounds. At the Fullerton Open in late November, Paulsen placed third after posting a 5-1 record. He is one of four Stanford wresters to amass at least 20 wins this season and he led the team with four technical fall victories.

The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the selection criteria without priority order, which consists of head-to-head competition, qualifying event placement, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and number of matches contested at that weight class.

The 50 at-large qualifiers will join the 280 student-athletes that qualified automatically through their conference and regional qualifying tournaments in Omaha next week, March 18-20. In each weight class, 33 wrestlers will compete for national titles, with the top eight finishers being named All-Americans.

Giesen Splits Matches in Poland

WARSAW, Poland-- Stanford's Zack Giesen split his two wrestling matches in the 185-pound weight class on Friday at the Ziolkowski International.

Giesen, a two-time participant in the NCAA Tournament, pinned Poland's Bartosz Sofinski in the opening round, before falling to Russia's Anzor Urishev. Urishev went onto capture the bronze medal.

The United States, who set 10 competitors, finished in 11th place with 13 points, while Iran, followed by Russia and Azerbaijan finished in the top-three in the team competition.

Stanford wrestling under second-year head coach Jason Borrelli gets under way in November. Borrelli's incoming recruiting class is ranked amongst the best in the nation. This past year, Stanford won eight duals, had four top-three Pac-10 placers for the first time in more than two decades and sent two wrestlers to compete for a national title at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Giesen is slated to be a senior on this year's team after redshirting last year.

Stanford Wrestling Ranks Among Nation's Best Academic Programs

Stanford Wrestling Ranks Among Nation's Best Academic Programs
Cardinal listed third nationally in team GPA with two NWCA Academic All-Americans.

The Stanford wrestling team was listed among the nation's best academic programs when the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 and individual all-academic wrestling teams for the 2008-09 season. Stanford came in third among all Division I programs with a 3.2574 GPA.

Junior Jake Johnson and redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui were named NWCA Academic All-Americans. Amuchastegui boasted the highest GPA of all Division I wrestlers, sitting atop the all-academic list at 3.93.

Rounding out the top five individuals were Liberty’s Christian Smith (3.92), Tucker Lane (3.92) of Nebraska, Jeffrey Newby (3.82) of Utah Valley and Jarrod King (3.78) of Edinboro.

Johnson, a management science and engineering major with a 3.46 GPA, went 31-15 and claimed third place in the Pac-10 this season. One of four team co-captains, the junior 184-pounder placed in all five tournaments he competed in, led the team with nine major decisions and was the only Cardinal wrestler to post a 30-win season. He was named a first-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection in April, garnering a conference academic award for the second consecutive year.

Amuchastegui, a mechanical engineering major who was also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic First Team, finished his redshirt freshman season with a 29-8 record, matching teammate <http://www.gostanford.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/giesen_zack00.html>Zack Giesen's 2007 effort as the third-winningest rookie in school history. In the course of his notable freshman campaign, the Talent, Ore. led the team with 75 dual points, was the Pac-10 runner-up at 165 pounds and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. He upended two ranked opponents during the year, including a stunning upset of fifth-seeded Nick Marable in his first career NCAA Championship match.

As a team, Stanford finished third among Division I squads behind American and Harvard. The Cardinal moved up one place from last year, after finishing fourth in 2007-08.

The team GPA is comprised of 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.

Individually, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule – and must have competed in at least 60 percent of the team’s schedule. The other way to qualify is to have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and be an NCAA All-American.

The 2008-09 NWCA Academic All-Americans are highlighted by a total of 51 NCAA qualifiers, 17 NCAA All-Americans, eight NCAA finalists and five NCAA champions. In total 73 individuals representing 45 schools were honored.
