Delaware All-Stars in the 32nd Annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic

Pittsburgh, PA - February 12, 2006 - Dapper Dan Charities will sponsor The 32nd Annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, the most prestigious high school all-star wrestling meet in the United States, on Sunday, March 26, 2006, at the University of Pittsburgh Fitzgerald Field House.
Delaware is the guest state team to compete against the Western Pennsylvania All-Stars in the preliminary dual meet beginning at 2:00 p.m. The feature match, between the Pennsylvania state team and the USA All-Stars will follow at 4:00 p.m.

Don Parsley, one of the Delaware coaches selecting the states best seniors to challenge the WPIAL All-Stars knows just how tough the WPIAL team is each year. Parsley, a WPIAL Runner-up and PIAA State Finalist from Greensburg Salem High School, represented the WPIAL All-Star Team in 1980 against New York.

"We are really excited about opportunity to bring a team to Pittsburgh to compete against one of the toughest districts in the country. This year our state has a great crop of high seniors and we will give the WPIAL a real challenge" said Parsley. Our Delaware kids are taking this challenge very seriously. We will bring our best to this great event"

Parsley who has been coaching for 21 years and accumulated more than 175 victories, coached his Milford High School team to the coveted Division II State Championship in 2004.

The WPIAL versus Delaware will likely pit brother against brother. Don's younger brother Randy is the head wrestling coach at Greensburg Salem High School. Randy attends the Wrestling Classic each year, because he typically has a wrestler on either the PA or WPIAL team, or both. The WPIAL team has not lost their dual meet to another state since 1992.

The Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, dubbed "The Rose Bowl of Wrestling," recognizes high school seniors who have had stellar wrestling careers and provides an exciting opportunity for them to compete in a USA vs. Pennsylvania All-Star dual meet.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and its insurance subsidiary UPMC Health Plan will present this all-star event, which is produced by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Dapper Dan Charities and local volunteers.

Proceeds from the Wrestling Classic benefit a youth wrestling program for inner-city children through the Dapper Dan Youth Sports Leagues at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.

"The Wrestling Classic, is dubbed 'The Rose Bowl of Wrestling,' because year-after-year it matches the best high school seniors in the country against Pennsylvania's best, it is a first class event for the wrestlers, coaches, fans and media. Each year we draw 4,000 fans because it is a great product for a worthy cause". said Co-Director Kraig Nellis.

Proceeds from the Wrestling Classic benefit a youth wrestling program for inner-city children through the Dapper Dan Youth Sports Leagues at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania. "This year we started our third youth wrestling program at the B&G Club in McKees Rocks. Just like the two previous clubs, this community has no youth wrestling program", said Nellis.

USA Team defeats PA All-Stars in the 30th Annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic

Western PA Team dominates Texas All-Stars

Pittsburgh, PA The USA All-Star Team claimed ten of thirteen matches to easily win the 30th Annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic 35-9 on Saturday, March 13, 2004.
The best high school wrestlers in the country, Pennsylvania and the state of Texas entertained the 4,000 fans at the University of Pittsburgh. There were several very close, exciting matches throughout the evening but it was the WPIAL Team and the USA All-Stars that showed their superiority.
The USA Team jumped out to a big lead by winning six of the first seven matches. Kyle Turnbull (WV) used an inside trip for 5 points to defeat Gary Mayfield (Hanover) at 112 lbs. Charlie Falck, four-time state champion from Minnesota had all he could handle in AA state champion Joe Kremmer. Falk won 4-3.
At 130 pounds, Nathan Morgan (CA) decisioned Jared Royer (Cedar Cliff) 13-5 and was given the Turning Point of the Match award. Morgan regained the momentum for the USA Team after Pennsylvania's Coleman Scott registered the teams first win at 125 lbs.
Scott showed his metal when he fought off a very painful shoulder injury late in the first period. Against his coaches' advice, Scott wrestled the reminder of the match with one arm. Scott won two scrambles, putting Jordan Cross (WI) on his back on both occasions. Scott was named the Pennsylvania team's Outstanding Wrestler for his heroics and dominating 16-9 win.
Angel Cejud kept his perfect career record (128-0) and four Arizona state titles in tack. He was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the USA Team with his domination of Darren Kern from Upper Perkiomen at 135 kbs. Cejun registered a fall and increased the USA Team's lead to 16-3.
Three more consecutive regular decisions from Alex Tsirtsis (IN), Trevor Chin (NY) and Mike Poeta (IL) clinched the dual meet for the USA Team with 9 more points and a 2-3 lead. Tsirtsis defeated Isaiah Britton, from Loyalsock in a close match 6-4. Chinn defeated Scott Rendos, Brockway, 5-1 and Poeta handled Steve Anceravage, Bloomsburg, 10-5.
The Pennsyl;vania Team had hopes of finishing strong in the last five weight classes but could only muster two wins. Two-time AAA state champion Jarrod King, Connellsville, used his patented high crotch, change to a double, to break a 1-1 tie in the last ten seconds to defeat three-time Ohio state champion Steve Luke at 160 pounds. North Hampton's stud and two-time AAA state champion Josh Haines defeated Alaska's Jed Wade in a low scoring match, 1-0 at 189 lbs.

Kurt Brenner, Freedom, two-time AA state champion lost a hard fought match 8-6 in sudden death ride out to four-time Illinois state champion Bake Mauer at 171 lbs. The USA Team closed the evening with Joe Dennis (OH) scoring a take down in the third period to defeat Jon Oplinger, North Hampton and Matt Fields (IO) with a major decision over Jon Neese, Marion Center, 11-2.
This team surpassed last years USA Team with the most career wins of any USA Team. Their win brings the dual meet to 16-14 in favor of the Pennsylvania Team. The USA Team has won eight out of the last eleven dual meets.
