Polz named National High School Coach of the Year
EASTON , Pa. The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) has selected Mike Polz of Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Ill. as its National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year for 2006.
The NHSCA selects National High School Coaches of the Year annually in 20 boys and girls sports. Last year,s recipients were from 15 different states. While they represent a multitude of different backgrounds, they exhibit a common theme: a strong dedication to supporting and developing high school student-athletes. Polz is the NHSCA,s first selection for 2006.
"Illinois has long been one of the nation,s top wrestling states, and Mike Polz has been one of Illinois, top coaches for over a decade," NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro said. "His success at Carl Sandburg shows that he not only produces outstanding wrestlers, but great teams as well, and we are proud to be honoring him."
Polz will be honored as Coach of the Year at the Coaches and OfficIals Championships Banquet in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m., the evening before the start of the 17th annual National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships. On that same day, at 11 a.m. at the Petersen Events Center, the site of the competition, Polz will give a presentation on building a championship program as part of the High School Nationals Convention, which takes place alongside the competition. Then, at noon, he will be featured along with Penn State University head coach Troy Sunderland at the official coaches and wrestlers clinic. The convention will also feature a strength training clinic by strength training specialist Dale Greenwald, author of Weight Training by Design (published by McGraw-Hill), a nutritional clinic by World Champion and clinical nutritionist James Johnson. For a complete list of Championships and Convention events, visit the NHSCA,s web site at www.nhsca.com.
A two-time state qualifier at Riverside-Brookfield (Ill.) High in the mid-1970s and a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Polz recently completed his 18th season as a head coach, and his 14th at Carl Sandburg. This season, he led the Eagles a 33-0 record and their second consecutive Class AA dual-team state championship becoming the first public school in the 23-year history of the tournament to win back-to-back titles and back to-back titles in The Clash National Duals in Rochester, Minn. Carl Sandburg,s 33-19 title-match victory over Chicago St. Rita High Feb. 25 was Polz,s 400th career victory. In this year,s individual state tournament, Polz coached three state champions and five Eagles advanced to the finals, a Class AA record. Sandburg currently boasts a 51-match winning streak over two seasons, and Polz,s last four teams have a combined record of 103-3 and have been unbeaten in the regular season against Illinois opponents.
Polz began his head coaching career at New Lenox Providence High in 1989, where he coached for four seasons, leading the Celtics to the 1989 Class AA title and a runner-up finish in 1990. His career dual-meet record is 400-45, and he has coached 13 individual state champions and 45 placewinners.
The NHSCA selects Coaches and Senior Athletes of the Year in 20 boys and girls sports, and sponsors more than two dozen national championship events in 11 sports. This year National High School Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores Wrestling Championships is expected to attract more than 1,000 competitors and sophomores to Pittsburgh, and the NHSCA will conduct more than one dozen championship events in Virginia Beach, Va. this summer. BLAIR ACADEMY GOES 4-0 AT NHSCA FINAL FOUR; EASTON,S SOUDERS OUTSTANDING WRESTLER
EASTON, Pa. With victories over Parkersburg (W.Va.) South High, 60-3, Dallas (Texas) Bishop Lynch High, 53-17, Easton (Pa.) High, 49-20, and Sidney (Mont.) High, 48-12, Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy showed they are once again the top dogs of high school wrestling as they went 4-0 in the ninth annual National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Final Four of High School Wrestling Jan. 21 at Easton High School.
"We had four rounds of outstanding competition in this year,s Final Four," NHSCA associate executive director Joe Boardwine said. "The most fun about it is the way the excitement builds throughout the day, all the way to the final round. It,s just a very special event."
Easton senior Russ Souders (119) was voted the meet,s Outstanding Wrestler, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to beat two-time National Prep champion Ben Ashmore of Bishop Lynch 9-6 in the opening round, then following with two pins.
Ashmore,s younger brother, Luke, a Cadet National champion, also lost in the match, 4-3 to Braylin Williams, the first time both brothers had lost in the same dual meet. He also lost 4-2 in overtime to Blair Academy,s Mario Mason.
Easton was 2-1 in the event, beating Bishop Lynch 51-18 and Sidney 40-24 before its loss to Blair Academy. Sidney and Parkersburg South each went 1-2, Sidney beating Parkersburg South 51-16 and Parkersburg South, which once trailed 33-6, won the final eight matches to overtake Bishop Lynch 45-33.
Anthony Valles (112-119), Kellen Russell (130), Max Shanaman (135), Mason (140), Travis Blasco (145), Eric Medina (152) and Jared Platt (215) all posted 4-0 records for Blair Academy. Posting 3-0 records were Easton,s Jordan Oliver (103) and Cory Rutt (189) and Bishop Lynch,s Dak Adamson (125).
The meet coaches all loved the event. Here are some of their comments:
Easton coach Steve Powell: "I was real pleased with our kids. The young kids are coming along, and helped us put together a very good team effort. Where Russ Souders is good, he is very good. There are a few positions where he is just nasty and real pain to deal with for his opponents."
Sidney coach Guy Melby: "This was a tremendous opportunity for our program. We wanted to make sure we wrestled Blair when we came here. That alone was worth the trip. In our match with Easton, we had them in a bunch of matches, but just made little mistakes at the wrong times. This event was great."
Bishop Lynch coach Tim Matthews: "This was a wake-up call for us. We weren't ready. I think we had too many days off, too much downtime after the holidays coming in here. We plan to study some of the matches on film with our coaching staff and make improvements. Even though we are missing a couple of key guys, I thought we still should have done better on an individual level."
Parkersburg South coach Tim McCartney: "I wish we had the team that we expected to have. We're missing about half of that team, but we don't want to make excuses. I'm proud of how the kids got out of the goose egg column with that win over Bishop Lynch. It was a great event."

Happy New Year from the NHSCA offices!
We're looking forward to another year of great wrestling competition. January started off with a bang on the 14th, when Salisbury High School in Allentown, PA hosted the 2006 NHSCA Wrestling Festival. To read more about this event, click here:
http://www.nhsca.com/events/w20050115_festival/post_press.php?event_id=14
This Saturday, January 21st, the NHSCA presents to the wrestling community the 2006 NHSCA National High School Wrestling Final Four. Tickets are available now and at the event. You can hear FREE LIVE, mat-side broadcasting on <http://www.NHSCA.com>www.NHSCA.com, or watch the event LIVE at www.LiveSportsVideo.com for a small fee.
Four of the top ranked high school wrestling teams in the country will determine on the mat instead of on paper, who truly has the best dual meet wrestling team in the country. The stage is set for what guarantees to be the most exciting team competition of the year.
The format is a dual meet format. Two mats will be used during the morning and afternoon sessions. Every weight class will prove to be a key match. There will be four sessions beginning at 10:00 am, 11:45am, 1:30pm, and 3:15pm. The high school powerhouses entered in the 2006 event are Blair Academy (NJ) (National Prep Champions), Easton (PA) (2nd in the PA State), Bishop Lynch (TX) (2nd in the National Prep Championships), and Parkersburg South (West Virginia State Champions).
In addition, this year's event will feature a special guest team: Sidney, Montana (3x Montana State Champions in past three years).

CRAIG, REED DEFEND TITLES IN NATIONAL OPEN PRE-SEASON WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
EASTON, Pa. David Craig (171) of Brandon (Fla.) High and Chip Reed (215) of Kernersville (N.C.) Robert B. Glenn High repeated as champions in the High School Division in the 8th annual National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) National Open Pre-Season Wrestling Championships November 12-13 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The scholastic-style event was contested for wrestlers in four divisions: the High School Division (grades 9-12), the Middle School Division (grades 7-9), the Elementary Division (grades 4-6), and the College Division. The top six placewinners qualify for the 2006 NHSCA National Open Wrestling Championships, to be held in Virginia Beach, Va. next June.
"The National Open Pre-Season Wrestling Championships has become the best tournament of its kind in the nation," NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro said. "This Pre-Season event is a unique experience that involves athletes from so many different parts of the country and allows for elementary through college/open competition under one roof. A lot of great wrestlers have come through this event and gotten the confidence boost they needed for an outstanding season. In just eight years, this event has developed an outstanding tradition."
Craig, the nation's top collegiate prospect who has committed to Lehigh University, needed just 1 minute, 10 seconds to pin his first three opponents, then won the title with a 15-1 major decision. Eric Grajales, a freshman and Craig's teammate at Brandon, also was dominant in winning the 103-pound title. Jeremie Cook of Venice High became Florida's third champion by winning the title at 189.
Reed's second title capped an outstanding performance by the host state, which led all states by crowning five individual champions. Making the most noise was sophomore Jacob Earp (130) of Boone Watauga High. Earp, who didn't place in the Class 4A state tournament last year, stunned two-time New Jersey placewinner Will Livingston of Newton Kittatinny High 2-1 in the semifinals, then scored an 11-2 major decision over Tennessee state champion Nic Bundy of Hendersonville High for the title. Junior Travis Coffey, Earp's teammate at Watauga, won the 112-pound title, along with junior Thomas Ferguson (140) of Cary High and senior Zach Martin (145) of Southern Pines Pinecrest High.

National High School Wrestling Championships and Convention, to the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
EASTON, Pa. The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) has reached an agreement to move its signature event, the National High School Wrestling Championships and Convention, to the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The 17th annual Championships and Convention will be conducted March 20-26, 2006. Opened three years ago, The <http://www.peterseneventscenter.com/>Petersen Events Center is a state-of-the-art facility with a seating capacity of more than 10,000. The new site was approved by the NHSCA Board of Directors last week.
"We are excited to bring our most prestigious event to Pennsylvania, a state with an unsurpassed wrestling tradition," NHSCA associate executive director Joe Boardwine said. "The Petersen Events Center is a first-class facility that is ideal for a major wrestling event. Pittsburgh is easily accessible from every major city in the country. The event was very successful in Cleveland, Ohio, and we thank the Ohio wrestling community for all of its support."
The National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships, convention and banquet will be conducted March 23-26. Only seniors who have been state champions and runners-up in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships during their careers are automatically eligible for the prestigious event. Exceptions are made in four states with single-class wrestling: California, where the top eight placewinners qualify, and Indiana, New Jersey and New York, where the top four qualify. A wild card system allows limited numbers of highly accomplished wrestlers to enter via a petition process.
Preceding the National Seniors championship is the second annual High School Junior Nationals Wrestling Championships and the inaugural High School Sophomore Nationals Wrestling Championships March 21-24. The championship and consolation finals will take place on the evening of March 24, immediately following the conclusion of Day 1 wrestling in the Senior Nationals.
"The National High School Wrestling Championships has truly transformed high school wrestling in the United States," NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro said. "Not only has the tournament provided outstanding scholastic-style competition, but it has provided valuable opportunities for high school wrestlers and college coaches to meet and connect. The field in last year,s National Juniors Championships exceeded our expectations. It was such a big success that our member coaches requested we add a sophomore tournament to the event. With the addition of this year,s National Sophomores Championships, we look forward to extending our competition opportunities even further."
Unlike the Seniors championship, the Juniors and Sophomores championships are open to all juniors and sophomores, respectively, with no state placement prerequisite. Nevertheless, last year,s Juniors event still attracted a top-quality field. Nearly 80 per cent of the nearly 400 entries from 35 states were state champions, placewinners or qualifiers. The Sophomores championship is expected to attract a field of similar quality in its first year. Both events give the state champion and novice wrestler alike an equal opportunity to prove on the mat who truly is the top wrestler in each weight in a graduating class. At the same time, it allows them to showcase their talents before college coaches, many of whom are already on hand to watch the top seniors in America compete.
Entry information is available by visiting the NHSCA,s web site at <http://www.nhsca.com/>www.nhsca.com.

Four of the top high school programs in America, will compete in the third annual Final Four
EASTON, Pa. Four of the top high school programs in America, Blair Academy of Blairstown, N.J., Easton High School of Easton, Pa., Great Bridge High School of Chesapeake, Va., and Edmond North High School of Edmond, Okla., will compete in the third annual Final Four of High School Wrestling, to be held January 18, 2003 at Easton High School.
It is the best field to date in the event,s young history, and includes what are widely considered to be the top three teams in the nation last year Blair Academy, Easton, and Great Bridge as well as in pre-season rankings this year. Edmond North, with one of its best teams ever despite the graduation of four-time unbeaten Oklahoma state champion Teyon Ware, has been ranked as high as No. 10 in some polls.
"This is the best field we have ever assembled for the Final Four, and we are very excited about this year,s event," NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro said. "All four teams consider it a distinct honor to be invited to the Final Four of High School Wrestling. Wrestling fans in this area will be treated to a great event, and the competition and the events we have planned for these young men will make it a memorable experience for them."
National team rankings will be on the line. All four teams are expected to be ranked highly in the vast majority of national high school wrestling polls, including the rankings published by the NHSCA.
For true wrestling fans, these four teams need no introduction. Blair Academy has won the team title in the National Prep Championships for 21 consecutive years, a national record, and defeated Easton 38-18 in the final match of the inaugural Final Four of High School Wrestling last January. The Bucs boast five returning National Prep champions. Seniors Rob Preston (112 last year) and Ryan Davis (140) are two-time National Prep champions, and seniors Mark Perry (145) and Matt Maciag (189) and junior Mark Bogart (119) also were National Prep titlists. Despite some graduation losses, Easton returns junior state champion Mike Rogers (135) and senior Matt Lear (152), third in state last year. Great Bridge also has an impressive group of returnees with five state champions in its lineup: three-time state champion Daniel Friskhorn (130), two-time state champion Ajay Foreman (160), junior Hunter Davenport (140), and sophomore Patrick Bond (189), along with senior transfer Donnie Ooton (145), a two-time state champion. Edmond North, which finished just 1.5 points out of the top spot in Oklahoma,s Class 5A individual state tournament a year ago, is led by senior state champion Charles Jones (152). His brother Chris, a junior, finished third in state last year at 140. Seniors Kyle Evans (112) and Brett Behenna (130) and sophomore Colby Robinson (119) also finished third in state.
Following is the competition schedule for the Final Four of High School Wrestling:
Saturday, January 18
10 a.m. Blair Academy vs. Great Bridge
Easton vs. Edmond North
2 p.m. Blair Academy vs. Edmond North
Easton vs. Great Bridge
6 p.m. Edmond North vs. Great Bridge

North Carolina and Florida Dominate As nearly 600 Wrestlers Representing 25 States Compete in 5th Annual NHSCA Pre-Season Championships
Matt Juncal named outstanding wrestler - repeats at 189 lbs. in HS Division
Winston-Salem, NC - North Carolina and Florida each produced three winners in the High School division and the two states went on to dominate all four divisions as North Carolina won twelve titles overall with Florida taking eleven at the fifth annual NHSCA National Pre Season Wrestling Championships November 9-10 at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum Annex in Winston-Salem, NC.
In addition to its three High School division wins, North Carolina took three titles in each of the other three divisions Elementary, Middle School and College. Florida captured five Middle School crowns, two in the College ranks and one Elementary match. The results mirrored those of 2001 when North Carolina and Florida also finished on top. Georgia performed well, producing eight winners, while West Virginia made a good showing, taking four titles.
Matt Juncal, of Brandon High School, in Brandon, FL, received the Outstanding Wrestler award in the High School Division as he repeated his 189 lb. win from last year, defeating Eric Brown of Glen Oak HS in Canton, Ohio. Eric Grajalas of Florida and Byron Sigmon of North Carolina were named the Outstanding Wrestlers in the Elementary and Middle School Divisions respectively.
In another notable repeat performance, Vincent Ramirez of Riverside HS in Durham, NC defeated Cesar Grajales of Brandon HS in Brandon, FL at 119 lbs. Ramirez had been the champion at 103 lbs in the 2001 event.
.
In addition to Juncal, Florida was represented on the top step by Jegan Gabbidon (135) of Tampa and Seamus O'Brien (145) of Palm Beach Gardens. Other North Carolina High School Division champions included Bryan LaShomb (112) of Moyock and Jared Campbell (275) of Chapel Hill.
High School Division winners also included Matt Heim (103) of Alpharetta, GA, Shane Grogg (125) of Parkersburg, WV, Braden Shaw (130) of Follansbee, WV, Nathan Berryman (140) of Powder Springs, GA, Phil Bliss (152) of Colliers, WV, Seth Garvin (160) of Homewood, AL, Michael Vachon (171) of Clifton, VA and Michael Patterson (215) of Ontario, NY.
The Elementary Division produced an extraordinary result as brothers Phillip and Alex Holloway of Marietta, GA each was crowned a champion. Alex repeated his 2001 win at 80 lbs, while Phillip bettered his second place finish last year at 75 lbs.
A noteworthy match in the Middle School Division was the win at 90 lbs. for Andrew Clement of Richmond, VA. over Matt Castro of Spring, TX. Clement, is a three time national champion and a six time All American.
With 591 entries, the overall tournament field was up almost 50% from 2001. State participation for the two day event also increased with entries coming from 25 states, topping last year's 20.
The NHSCA sponsors nine national championship events in wrestling, golf and soccer. This past spring, its 13th annual Senior National High School Wrestling Championship attracted more than 700 entries to the Public Hall Convention Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The event will be staged at that venue again in the spring of 2003. This past June, the NHSCA's fifth annual National Open Wrestling Championships drew over 1500 entries to Norfolk, VA. For a complete schedule of upcoming events, visit the NHSCA web site at www.nhsca.com. The National High School Coaches association is a not for profit 501c3 service organization. It was founded in 1989 for the express purpose of providing support and leadrership programs to the nation's 500,000 high school coaches

FINAL FOUR OF HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING
TO FEATURE BEST FIELD EVER
It is the best field to date in the event's young history, and includes what are widely considered to be the top three teams in the nation last year Blair Academy, Easton, and Great Bridge as well as in pre-season rankings this year. Edmond North, with one of its best teams ever despite the graduation of four-time unbeaten Oklahoma state champion Teyon Ware, has been ranked as high as No. 10 in some polls.
"This is the best field we have ever assembled for the Final Four, and we are very excited about this year's event," NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro said.
Edmond North, which finished just 1.5 points out of the top spot in Oklahoma's Class 5A individual state tournament a year ago, is led by senior state champion Charles Jones (152). His brother Chris, a junior, finished third in state last year at 140. Seniors Kyle Evans (112) and Brett Behenna (130) and sophomore Colby Robinson (119) also finished third in state.
Following is the competition schedule for the Final Four of High School Wrestling:
Saturday, January 18
10 a.m. Blair Academy vs. Great Bridge
Easton vs. Edmond North
2 p.m. Blair Academy vs. Edmond North
Easton vs. Great Bridge
6 p.m. Edmond North vs. Great Bridge
8 p.m. Easton vs. Blair Academy
