Detroit -Beat the Streets USA Wrestling

In several weeks history will be made in one of America's largest cities when the Beat the Streets-Detroit launches its initial program on September 15, 2009.

The Co-Directors, Mark Churella, former 3X NCAA Champion and Mike Rodriguez, 2X NCAA Runner-up  both wrestled at the University of Michigan located nearby in Ann Arbor.

In 2007, Mike was recognized nationally as the coach with the most wins in high school wrestling with 732.  He coached at Detroit Catholic Central HS for 51 years where his teams won 7 State High School Championships.

Cliff Keen Products, once again,  as they have done in New York City,  is donating all the head guards.

Jim Keen, President of Cliff Keen Products, was very instrumental in the development of urging the Detroit community to begin a Beat the Streets Wrestling Program.  The company will also be supplying 100 uniforms and practice gear for the entire program.

Asics and AC Sports will be providing discounted shoes to all the wrestlers as it does for all new cities who launch Beat the Streets programs.

The Detroit organization is a 501C3 not for profit and have partnered with the City of Detroit Recreation Department, Detroit Public Schools and the Southwest Neighborhood Association.

Registrations has already begun with the distribution of flyers and posters throughout the middle schools and recreation areas in the city.

Mark Churella is providing the mat and found space in Mexican Town for the program.  According to Jim Keen, "In addition, and probably most importantly, Mike Rodriguez is providing all his time for coaching these kids. You couldn't find a better person than Mike to head this up with all his lifetime experiences with these kids. He's the best there is."

Al Bevilacqua, Chairman of the Beat the Streets USA Wrestling program, "USA Wrestling is excited to add Detroit to its newly created national effort that began in 2008.  Detroit, a city with 1.8 million people and 79 public high schools do not have 1 school with schoolboy wrestling.

The city itself has been savaged by the economic downturn.  Now, at least their kids will have an opportunity of becoming involved with a great activity. "

The organization has found an ideal location in the Mexican neighborhood and will be using the Patton Recreation Center that is surrounded by several middle schools.  The Patton Recreation facility is "the place" that is familiar with youth activities in the area.

The kids will now be exposed to the "magic of wrestling."

Our State, Michigan, is so far behind in the times that it is ridiculous and our Michigan wrestlers are the ones that are suffering as a result...Our Michigan kids DO NOT get the same opportunities as other student-athletes from other states...CAN YOU HELP???? Please read the non-sense below....(ie; Our wrestlers have once again been denied the opportunity to wrestle in the NHSCA "Junior" National event...please take the time to review
the enclosed...Thanks!)

Sincerely,

Dean A. Reader

The Honorable Jennifer, State of Michigan, Granholm, Governor,

Dear Governor Granholm,

I would like to present, and bring to your attention, my shared concern that our
student athletes here in Michigan are NOT getting the same opportunities as
other states. Our son, Jonathan Reader, is a wrestler on the Davison High School
wrestling team. Our team is currently ranked #3 in the nation and has won three
of the last four appearances @ the Division I - Michigan State Championship
Finals. My son, Jon, as well as many other kids on the Davison high school
wrestling team are ranked individually in the top 10 in the nation. As a result
of programs like Davison's here in Michigan, our Michigan athletes have been
recognized in many wrestling magazines as from a state that is "Up and coming",
but is continually restrained by the MHSAA rules. Our athletes are invited to
compete against the nations top athletes in the country, but are not able to
participate due to the "antiquated" bi-laws of the MHSAA...

My concern, is that our Michigan student athletes continually are denied the
opportunity to compete out of state at some of the more prestigious tournaments
and events. Most recently, we were denied once again, by the MHSAA, from
competing at a national event. Our student athletes were denied the opportunity
to enroll in a tournament sponsored by the NHSCA (National High School Coaches
Association) in Cleveland Ohio. Please note, that this tournament does not occur
until after the regular high school season as referenced in the material below.

Our Michigan student athletes deserve the same opportunities as athletes from
other States. My hope is that you will take the time out of your busy schedule
to review our concerns with the MHSAA rules...It is our belief that the MHSAA is
a governing body that is to represent our student athletes and make sure they
are getting all the opportunities they deserve.

Enclosed is the response that I received from the MHSAA regarding my recent
request....

Sir:

MHSAA Regulation 13 B states:

SECTION 13 (B)-A student shall not compete at any time in any MHSAA
Tournament sport in any of the following events: (1) Any event which is
or purports to be an "All-Star" contest, regardless of the method of
selection; (2) "All-Star" fund-raising events or similar exhibitions if
they involve contestants other than the students and faculty of that
student's school; (3) Any event which is or purports to be a national
high school championship, or the qualification thereto. Participation in
such a contest by a high school student shall cause that student to
become ineligible for all interscholastic athletics for a maximum period
of one year of school enrollment from the date of the athlete's last
violation of this Regulation.

Participation in this event would be a violation of this regulation,
resulting in loss of eligibility for a student in all MHSAA sponsored
athletic activity. This is the same interpretation for students that
participate in the Senior National meet run by the same organization.

Thank you.

Mark Uyl
