Class A
B O L D of Olivia earned the Class A team title with a 37-18 win over Pine Island. Frazee, co-champion last year, finished third with a 53-7 win over St. James. Pierz earned the consolation championship with a 46-23 defeat of Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.
Senior Eric Sanders of Wabasha-Kellogg became only the second wrestler in Minnesota history to win five consecutive state titles. Sanders (47-1) defeated Jason Cazett of Meadow Creek Christian/RCA 5-2 in the 119-pound championship match. At 152 pounds, senior Mitch Kuhlman (48-0) of Medford, last year's champion at 145 pounds, ended his high school wrestling career with 10-3 win over Erik Wallace of Sibley East in the championship bout. Kuhlman entered the record books for most career wins with a total of 233.
Four other 2003 champions earned their second state titles: Badger/Greenbush-Middle River junior Gabriel Mooney (43-0), 2002 champion at 103, defeated Dan Gray of Dover Eyota 8-0; Shane Masching (42-1) of Hayfield successfully defended his 125-pound title, defeating Shane Haag of Lewiston-Altura 11-7; junior Craig Luberts (43-6) of Pierz, the 2002 135-pound champion, defeated Justin Jones of Mille Lacs in the 140-pound championship bout; the 2002 champion at 140, BOLD senior Shawn Pumley (44-3), defeated John Niebuhr of United South Central of Wells 3-1 for the title at 145. First-time state champions: Zachary Sanders, Eric's younger brother, (45-4) of Wabasha Kellogg; Kelly Janke (39-6) of Frazee; Andy Quittschreiber (41-3) of Frazee; Gabe Dretsch (43-1) of Frazee; Tom Libbesmeier (38-0) of Kimball Area; Craig Myhre (39-5) of Minneota; Casey Finck (32-0) of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale; and Justin Olson (41-2) of Frazee
Class AA
The Litchfield Dragons took home silver medals last. Their 2003 booty is gold, earning the title in only their second appearance by defeating St. Michael-Albertville 33-20 and finishing with a record of 29-2-1. After a sixth-place finish in 2002, the Bluejackets of Hibbing defeated Windom/Mountain Lake/ Butterfield-Odin 32-26 for third place. Scott West defeated Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 39-20 to earn the consolation title.
The 2002 103-pound champion, Tyler Safratowich (43-1), a Park Rapids junior, defeated Shane Walton of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus in an 8-2 decision to earn the title at 112 pounds. Senior Jeff Cooley (43-0) of Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove successfully defended his 130-pound title by defeating Joe Buschette of Litchfield 3-2.
Eight of the twelve first-time state champions are undefeated: Travis Elq (46-0) of Windom/Mountain Lake/ Butterfield-Odin at 103; Nick Kulseth (44-0) of Windom/Mountain Lake/ Butterfield-Odin at 119; Tony Noyes (46-0) of New London-Spicer at 125; Mike Folie (41-0) of Waseca at 135; Peter Hayes (44-0) of Wadena-Deer Creek at 140; Jeremy Anderson (48-0) of Thief River Falls at 145; Jeremy Pederson (45-0) of Becker at 189; and Kevan Meiners (39-0) of Caledonia at 215. The other new champions were Nathan Matousek (42-2) of Glencoe-Silver Lake at 152, Andy Przekwas (43-2) of Roseau at 160, Jacob Bryce (41-3) of Minnewaska Area at 171, and Jeff Lucas (38-8) of Scott West at heavyweight.
Class AAA
In their 21st consecutive appearance, the Eagles of Apple Valley earned their fifth straight and 11th overall title with a 41-17 defeat of Simley, Inver Grove Heights. The Owatonna Huskies defeated Hutchinson 42-20 for third place. The consolation title was earned by Cambridge-Isanti after a 29-21 defeat of Elk River Area.
Five individual champions from the 2002 tournament returned to earn additional titles. Charlie Falck (45-1), an Apple Valley junior, joined the elite list of three-time state champions with a 13-0 defeat of Josh Lindquist of Prior Lake in the 119-pound championship match. Senior Dustin Dahlbom (46-2) of Stillwater Area successfully defended his 145-poiund title by defeating senior Adam Rall of Henry Sibley 8-6. Brainerd/Pillager senior Andy Pickar (40-1), the 2002 champion at 140, defeated Mike Quamme, a Northfield junior, in a fall at 1:04 for the 152-pound championship. At 171 pounds, Simley senior George Lynaugh (50-0), 2002 champion at 160, defeated Russell Smith of Owatonna 3-1. Senior Jared Massey of Centennial, 2002 champion at 171, defeated Micah Becker of Cambridge-Isanti in a decision of 11-4 for the 189-pound championship.
The 2003 first-time champions were Zach Bigboy (41-2) of Bloomington Kennedy, Jayson Ness (43-0) of Bloomington Kennedy, Richard Fessler (39-3) of Apple Valley, T.J Parlin (42-2) of Austin, Jestin Hulegaard (41-2) of Anoka, Andy Merkins (48-1) of Hutchinson, Kyle Anderson (49-2) of Simley, Kyle Massey (50-0) of Centennial, and Jon May (50-0) of Hutchinson.
The 2003 State Wrestling tournament was conducted Feb. 27-March 1 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
