Virginia Challenge announces new Beach Wrestling event

The Virginia Challenge, a non-profit wrestling organization aimed at brining national level wrestling events to Virginia, has announced its newest event, the Neptune Festival Beach Brawl Wrestling Championships to be held on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Virginia Beach, Va.

The event will be the second Beach Wrestling Event that the Virginia Challenge has sponsored; the first was the North American Beach Wrestling Championships in June of 2006.

“The North American Beach Wrestling Championships were a real hit with people that were on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront,” said Virginia Challenge Executive Director Frank Lipoli. “We held it in conjunction with the North American Sand Soccer Championships and we had literally thousands of people stopping to watch the wrestling in between the soccer matches.”

“It really helped us not only present the new style of Beach Wrestling to regular wrestling fans, it helped us get exposure for the sport of wrestling to non-wrestling fans,” said Lipoli.

The Neptune Festival Beach Brawl will again have a side-by-side partner – the 33rd annual Neptune Festival.

The Neptune Festival routinely attracts over 300,000 people to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

“This is a great weekend for people to come down to Virginia Beach for a weekend getaway and have some wrestling in their itinerary,” said Lipoli.

“Think about it, you can wrestle in front of 300,000 people!” he said.

One thing that the Virginia Challenge launched at the North American Championships is a dual-meet format.

The “Hungry Hungry Hippos,” a team comprised mostly of Great Bridge High School wrestlers, won the first Beach Wrestling dual tournament held in the United States.

The format is something Lipoli and the Virginia Challenge will keep and to continue to develop.

“It was so much fun, not just for the fans, but for the kids wrestling too,” said Lipoli. “This really helps the event stand out among Beach Wrestling events – we’re the first and only tournament to have a dual meet element.”

Always a master of the catchphrase, Lipoli’s “Beach Brawl Duals” will likely have creative teams like the “Sand Devils and Sandmen” again.

The event, like the North American Championships, will be USA Wrestling sanctioned and competitors must have a valid USA Wrestling Card to compete.

September 30 will be the individual portion of the event, with roped off competition circles dotting the 18th Street shoreline.

The Beach Brawl Duals will hit the sand on October 1.

“What I really like about Beach Wrestling is basically, it’s a day at the beach,” said Lipoli. “You go out, wrestle a few minutes, and go rinse off in the Atlantic Ocean.”

Coupling the event with major functions at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront will continue.

“We really think this is a great way to showcase the sport of wrestling, regardless of the style, to the public,” said Lipoli. “We’ll have elementary, middle school and high school divisions along with open, military and college divisions, too.”

The second Virginia Challenge event continues a trend of the new FILA style of wrestling in the U.S.

This past weekend, Long Island was host to the East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships and the first U.S. Nationals are set for Florida later in the month.

Registration information and additional information on Beach Wrestling and the Neptune Festival Beach Brawl Wrestling Championships can be found at http://www.virginiachallenge.org/ W.I.N. Magazine, InterMat and GameDay Magazine will again be media sponsors of the event.

In AAA, Great Bridge was runner-up in both the Ironman and Beast of the East.
They won the Virginia Duals' National Division. There are two 3x state
champions (Bond and Lashomb) and three 1x state champions (Brown, Pearman, and
Frishkorn) on this team. Matt Rosen is a 2x state finalist. Every weight class
has a wrestler whose skills range from "very good" to "superb". This team has
great balance from bottom to top and literally has no peer this year in
Virginia.

Inaugural Virginia Challenge Middle School National Holiday Duals Smash Hit !!!
By Frank Lipoli

Over 520 Middle School age wrestlers from grades 5th-8th invaded Old Dominion University Fieldhouse December 20-22 for the Inaugural Virginia Challenge Middle School National Holiday Duals. The tournament tuned out to be another smash hit event by the Virginia Challenge, which has created National, State and Regional events that have raised the level of Virginia wrestling the past 4 years.

20 teams wrestling on 10 mats from 6 States each wrestled 11 matches each in the 3 day tournament. 210 matches where wrestled each round by the 20 teams. 210 matches each round x 11 rounds = 2310 matches which = more fun than a bar of monkeys !!!

A closer look you may see that the tournament is on course to be as big as the Virginia Duals National Invitation Team Wrestling Championships in many ways. The Virginia Duals is the granddaddy of the all dual meet tournaments. The Virginia Duals took years to attract 6 states the National Holiday Duals did it in the 1st year. The Virginia Duals 1st year had 2 divisions 1 High School division with 8 teams, 1 College Division 8 teams and was wrestled on 4 mats. The goal then and now of the Virginia Duals is to wrestle the best wrestlers from around the country side by side, in a dual meet format, it took years to evolve to 5 divisions, which it has now.

The Holiday Duals had 2 pools of 10 teams each. Each team wrestled 9 matches in their pool. When pool wrestling was over the tournament split into 5, 4 team tournaments. That means that 5 teams regardless of how they did in pool matches won their last 2 matches. 10 teams where 1 and 1 in there last 2 matches and only 5 of the 20 teams lost there last 2. Every team was in a semi-final match, every team was in a final or consolation final. Think about it, the kids not only got to wrestle in dual meets next to some of the best kids in the country they got to wrestle with them. The last 2 matches in every case was with teams of the same level.. More fun for everyone !!!

The trip to the next level is not an easy one...The motto of serious minded wrestlers is "To be the best, wrestle with the Best". The Virginia Challenge Middle School National Holiday Duals is doing just that!!

I would like to thank the VAC for sponsoring the Middle School National Holiday Duals. I think the VAC is a one-of-a-kind organization in the whole country and is doing more for Virginia wrestling than they are given credit. While helping Virginia, you are also helping all of the surrounding states to VA - NJ, PA, WVA, NC, MD, DE - by bringing this kind of premier event to our back yard. Over the last 2-3 years you have put Virginia on the national wrestling map.

Keith Gardner
Voorhees, NJ

The Virginia Challenge has made a big name across the nation for putting on great events that are not like any other tournaments any where in the country...Thank you Virginia and everyone that has made the vision a reality !!!

If you may remember, JMU was on the brink of cutting 8 sports

The following is a link to a story in the Daily News Record, a Harrisonburg, Va. newspaper about a basketball coach's salary at James Madison University

If you may remember,
JMU was on the brink of cutting 8 sports last year (including wrestling) and eliminated scholarships because of lack of funding.

This story might shed some light on things

Virginia AAA State Tournament

By Skip Parker

This tournament was held February 22-23, 2002 in the Oscar Smith High School
gymnasium. Great Bridge won the team championship setting a new state record
for most number of points scored in the AAA tournament, breaking the old
record of 196.5 by the 1998 Great Bridge team. They tied a state AAA record
with having 7 individual champions. This was Great Bridge's 9th state
tournament title in 10 years. In this tournament, Michael Martin became the
7th 4-time state AAA champion. His father, David Martin, and his uncle,
Scott Conkwright, are also among those seven 4-time state champions. After
his championship win, Martin received a standing ovation from everyone in the
gym. Great Bridge had three wrestlers become 3x-state champions in senior,
Christian Staylor; senior, David Dashiell; and junior, Daniel Frishkorn.
Christian Smith (Western Branch), Ajay Foreman (Great Bridge), and David
Atkins (Lee Davis) all won their 2nd state title. Senior Brian Stith (Cox)
won his 1st state title and is a 4x state place-winner. Patrick Bond (Great
Bridge) was the only freshman to win a state title. Third place winner, Kyle
Graham (Colonial Forge), set a Virginia state record for most number of
individual bout wins in a wrestling career at 181.

We welcome very competitive teams

State Editors and State promotions persons,

I am the coach at Herndon High School in Northern Virginia, near Dulles
International Airport, and I am attempting to get the word out to other
states about filling our 2002 Capitol Challenge Tournament field. We try to
get a mix of STATES (last year 8 different states were represented). It was
won by Fulton High School (ranked #3 in New York).

The dates for next year's event is December 27-28th,2002.It is an event
where you can enter up to 21 wrestlers, with each entry having a chance to
score team points.

Additional information about our tournament can be received by contacting me
at my e-mail, <mailto:snsabo@hotmail.com>snsabo@hotmail.com
Our tournament has been won the last few years by outstanding out-of state
teams; Fulton H.S.(New York), Clovis H.S. (California) and Jesuit H.S.
(Louisiana). We welcome very competitive teams !!!
Please help me get the word out! We are looking for 8-9 teams for next
year's event.

Great Bridge Quad on Feb. 2, 2002

The Inter-Regional Quad by Skip Parker

The top teams from the North Region (Hayfield) and the Central Region
(Hermitage) along with Patrick Henry, also from the Central Division, came to
the Great Bridge on groundhog day (February 2nd) for the final duals
competition of the season. The opponents saw their shadows, which according
to legend means it's 6 more weeks of winter for them (actually, it more like
6 hours). Great Bridge was in peak form as they routed all 3 teams, winning
40 of the 42 individual bouts. The Wildcats had 15 undefeated wrestlers
(included 12 starters and Moore, Loeslein, and Stallings, who all had 1 win
each in their weight class). Two weeks ago, if you had said, "the Wildcats
won 40 of 42 bouts against 3 tough teams", most folks would have reacted,
"alright! We won one at 171!" Well, that's not how it was. The tandem of
J.T. King and Drew Loeslein were undefeated against pretty decent
competition. I was impressed (actually, I was flabbergasted) with the
progress they have made the past month since the injury to Mike Belew. They
were like the rest of the team with this set of victories. Their skills were
too much for any of the other competitors to deal with successfully.

This quad has always set the tone for the post-season tournaments. Wrestlers
who peak here carry their momentum into these competitions, scoring well in
district, regional, and some carry that pace as far as the state tournament.
It was clear throughout this competition that the tempo is clearly with the
Wildcats going into the post-season.

GREAT BRIDGE 68 - HERMITAGE 0

The bout of the day (probably in the entire state) happened between Foreman and Courtney. Ajay
scored 1st off a spin to pick up a takedown. Courtney started down in the
2nd and escaped with no further scoring in the period. In the 3rd, from
neutral Ajay scored a takedown on a Prescott. Courtney escaped and took Ajay
down to tie it at 4-4 with 34 seconds left in the period. Ajay couldn't
escape, so it went into overtime. Foreman wasted little time in taking
Courtney down, 15 seconds into the period to win it 6-4. It was a great
bout.

GREAT BRIDGE 66 - HAYFIELD 6
Hayfield is the strongest team in the Northern Region. They have most of the
strongest wrestlers in the region from 103 - 140. In fact, the week
following this quad meet Hayfield landed 11 of their 14 wrestlers in the
district finals. All 14 wrestlers qualified for the regional meet. Their
district champions included Heidar, Resto, Granja, Palacios, and Villanueva.
Resto was a 3rd place finisher last year at 112 in the state tournament and
had beaten Christian Smith 5-3 earlier this season in the Comet Classic.
Jochen Granja wrestled for Team Nicaragua in the Pan American Games this past
summer. It should be noted that Hayfield had 2 varsity wrestlers absent from
this competition (Demetrios Bursenos at 152 and Mike Delaney at 171). Because
they have so many good wrestlers, Hayfield is considered one of the best
duals teams in the state. Great Bridge is the best duals team in the state.
This match promised to be very interesting for those of us who know the guys
on both teams.

215. David Dashiell (GB) pin David Martinez 1:57
275. Brian Yannetti (GB) dec. Woon He Lee 5-1

This quad meet was the one event I've been dreading all season. It wasn't
because the inter-regional competition was so strong (it was) and threatened
to knock the Wildcats off their pins (it didn't). It was because this event
was the last duals competition for this incredible team . . . the last one .
. . period. It isn't often Virginia fans get to see a team of this caliber.
In my memory, these fans have never seen one of this caliber that was
actually from Virginia. This is a phenomenal duals team and a superb
tournament team. It seems fitting that the final quad of the year featured 2
teams that are on top of their regions. It was also a great way for the gang
to gain momentum into the post-season tournaments. All 14 wrestlers are
cookin', which has to be about as dreadful as it gets for the opposition.
Good luck, guys. You are off to a great start into the 3-week post-season
tournament competition.
