Fresno City College wins State Community College Championships…..again.
Fresno City, coached by Paul Keysaw easily dominated the competition at the 2011 state championships. They had eight wrestlers in the championship finals and ended up with 6 state community college champions. Fresno amassed 191 team points followed by Sacramento City with 94 points and Mt. San Antonio college finished third with 91 points. The state tournament was held December 9-10, hosted by Santa Rosa College.
Eric Orozco (133) West Hills College was selected as the Outstanding Wrestler.
Paul Keysaw is the Coach of the Year and Dondi Teran or Rio Hondo was selected as the Assistant Coach of the Year.
Coach Keysaw who previously coached at Moorpark College where his teams won 3 California Community College State Championships, moved to Fresno City College. Since his arrival at Fresno City his teams have won 7 CCA State Championships. Quite a coaching accomplishments and Coach Keysaw is to be commended for his consistently awesome coaching job. Paul is also the President of the CCS Wrestling Coaches Association and a 2012 Inductee selection into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Individual Results: 125-Pierce Lowry (Mt. San Antonio); 133-Eric Orozco (West Hills); 141-Frank Martinez (Rio Hondo); 147-Conrad Rangeli (Fresno City); 157-Brady Bersano (Fresno City); 165-Tigran Adzhemyan (Fresno City);
174-Martin Fabbian (Fresno City); 184-Fito Juarez (Fresno City); 197-Logan Paul Eickhoff (Shasta); 185-Luis Contreras (Fresno City
California Wrestling Hall of Fame 2012 Honorees Selected: Eight individuals have been selected for induction into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame. They are> David East, Sam Gollmyer, Bill Kalivas, Paul Keysaw, Lou Montano, Stephen Neal, Darryl Pope, Jesse Reyes, and Bill Van Worth.
Eight individuals will also be presented with the Lifetime Service Award in recognition of their time, dedication and support of amateur wrestling in California. They are: Rudy Gonzales, Ray Juhl, Dr. Ken Lane, Ed Levenson, Terry Moreland, Gary Pederson, Joe Smart, and Steve Varner
The 2012 Hall of Fame Banquet will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Bakersfield, CA. For additional information contact Lynn Dyche 408-978-9543.
2012 CIF State Tournament: As the 2011-12 wrestling season gets underway there are to primary questions to be answered; 1) will Alex Cisneros of Selma become the second four time state champion and 2) what teams are going to give Clovis any competition for the state team title.
Cisneros, a three time state champion from Selma High School is the odds on favorite to become only the second four time state champion. Darrell Vasquez of Bakersfield High School has won four state titles in the 39 year history of the state tournament. California has one division at the state tournament and it is very difficult to become a "four timer". Another wrestler off to a good start is Sophomore, Nick Nevills of Clovis. Nevills won the state title as a Freshman last year in the 285 pound weight division. Another outstanding wrestler in Isaiah Martinez, a junior from Lemore High School. He was a state champion last year and is a very skilled wrestler.
There are a number of teams who should finish high in the team scoring, but I don't see any team challenging Clovis. Coach Steve Tirapelle and his staff have done a great job of developing a high powered wrestling program at Clovis. I would have to pick Gilroy, Bakersfield, De La Salle, and Vacaville as some of the top teams. And don't forget about Poway. They always surprise.
The state tournament will be held at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield on March 2-3, 2012.
CA -Battle for the Belt Pre-seeds
(Temecula Valley, CA)
Battle for the Belt Preview
by Nick Kindred
Welcome to the 5th Annual Clinch Gear Battle for the Belt hosted by Temecula Valley High School. It is the goal of Temecula Valley High School toprovide wrestlers, coaches, and fans with a first class wrestling tournament that features the best in competition, awards, and service to those in attendance. Furthermore, it is our goal to improve the event in various ways each and every year. This year will be no different as anumber of quality teams and individuals have joined the field including someout of state flavor. New additions include schools like Green Valley and Spring Valley who typically field some ofthe top individuals in the state of Nevada as well as Pine Creek, Colorado whofields a number of state placers and Fargo All-Americans.
Also, a number of North Coast Section and Northern Section schools have joined the field helping to better represent the various wrestling regions throughout the state of California. Once again, eight of the state's ten CIF sections have brought their best competitors to battle for the coveted Title Belt. Though perennial state power Clovis is the favorite to take home their third consecutive title, eight of the state's top ten ranked teams will be inattendance, making the team competition a good barometer for how teams may finish in March.

Others standouts at this weight class include Poway's Tirso Lara, Calvary Chapel's Gordon McDonald, and Elk Grove's Jacob Lopez.
Preview: Returning state finalist Isaiah Locsin of LiveOak appears to be the class of this division. Only a sophomore, Locsin is undefeated having claimed titles atthe prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions and Doc Buchanan tournaments indominating fashion. Looking toavenge his loss to Locsin in the Doc Buchanan finals will be last year's Battle for the Belt runner-up at 103,Micah Perez of Central Union. Looking to throw a wrench in this potential match-up will be former state qualifiers Juan Garza of Oakdale, Sean Williams of Lemoore, Chris Tamez of Clovis East, Shawn Miller of Valhalla, Jaxon Fitzgerald of Foothill-Palo Cedro, and freshman standout Joseph Dominguez of St. John Bosco. Nevada stateplacer Jared Brathor of Green Valley should also challenge for a medal at 113.

Returning state champion Daniel Gaytan of Clovis will seek to avenge earlier season losses to returning state finalist Josh Rodriguez of Righetti and Doc Buchanan finalist Connor Pollock of Folsom. If he is to have a chance to avenge these losses, however, he will have to get through a very tough field that includes San Diego Section champion and state quarter-finalist Evan McKirdy of Del Norte and returning state qualifiers Peter Palacios ofCalvary Chapel, Daniel Polanco of Saint Francis, Michael Rodriguez of Alta Loma, Kevin Coburn of Granada, Joey Ramirez of De La Salle, and Artemio Flores of James Logan.

Having already won the prestigious Doc Buchanan tournament and placed at the Walsh Ironman in Ohio, Valencia will likely be the top ranked 126 pounder in the state when the new rankings are released. If he wants a shot at becoming the first ever four time belt winner, he will have to contend with the likes of two time state medalist and returning Battle for the Belt finalist Martin Ramirez of Elk Grove. Another Battle for the Belt finalist in his own right, Poway's Jesse Taylor will also contend for the belt at 132. Returning state qualifiers Matt Gay of Clovis, TJ Grisafe of La Costa Canyon, and Nevada state champion Zack Perry of Green Valley should also challenge at this weight.

Preview: With weight plans playing a role, two Bakersfield stars are forced to compete at138. Two time state placer and returning Battle for the Belt champion Natrelle Demison and fourth place state finisher Micah Cruz could indeed meet in an all Driller final. Seeking to derail an all Bakersfield matchup will be Central Section standout, Patrick Phaysamone of Clovis East and returning Battle for the Belt semifinalist Jon Jay Chavez of De La Salle. Last year's third place finisher in the Southern Section, Jacob Leon of Alta Loma, may also challenge for the belt. Leading the field are fourth place California state finisher Adam Hendrickson of Healdsburg and two time Nevada state champion Alex Aniciete of Las Vegas. Bakersfield's Maxx Ramirez was sixth at last year'sCalifornia state tournament and Pine Creek's Derrick Ortiz was sixth in the state of Colorado. Despite all of these credentials, this weight class appears to be relatively wide open. There are a number of state qualifiers who may also challenge for the belt including Chico's Pang Lee, Bellarmine's RJ Raffanti, Clovis' Jason Ladd, Righetti's Luke Wilson, and La Sierra's Taylor McCormick.

Also hoping to compete for the title is former Cadet national finalist and California state place winner Coleman Hammond of Bakersfield. Hammond could be tested by fellow California state medalist and defending Sac-Joaquin section champion Austin Branum of Del Oro. Others who will contend for medals include Central Coast Section champion and three time state qualifier Jorge Barajas of Saint Francis, Central Section placers Kyle Perrault of Clovis East and Colby Thompson ofClovis, and state qualifier out of the Northern Section Dallas Poston of Foothill-Palo Cedro.

Preview: This weight class might be the most unpredictable as it contains some out of state flavor along with three undefeated wrestlers. Green Valley's Ryder Newman is the returning Nevada state champion and he was also fourth at this year's RenoTournament of Champions. Spring Valley's Ray Waters is currently undefeated and was the runner-up in last year's Nevada state championships. Waters was also a Junior Freestyle All-American in Fargo last summer. Clovis' Adrian Salas boasts a California state medal to his resume, but has had very few matches during this wrestling season. Undefeated wrestlers Brady Beamon of Steele Canyon and Sam Hopkins of Saint Francis are both returning state qualifiers. Brady was a San Diego Section champion while Hopkins was the runner-up in the Central Coast Section. Last year's runner-up in the North Coast Section, Matthew Tsarnas of Healdsburg, should also challenge for the belt at this weight. Others to watch include Poway's Stevie Cervantes, Folsom's Devon Nooner, and ML King's Harlan Kistler II.

12. Harlan Kistler II (ML King)
13. Devon Nooner (Folsom)
Preview: In a weight class that has eight returning state qualifiers, three time state placer Zach Nevills of Clovis appears to be the favorite. Former Colorado state champion Connor King, now competing for Poway should also contend. If the seeds hold, the Battle for the Belt semifinals could entail a riveting rematch of last week's Doc B semifinals in which Nevills squeaked out an overtime win over King in a hotly contested match. Hoping to meet one of them in the finals is returning state placer Silas Nacita of Bakersfield. Other returning state qualifiers hoping to challenge for the belt include Jesse Orona of Carlsbad, undefeated Dylan Morris of Redwood, Immanuel Barber of Canyon Springs, Brett Sayre of Temecula Valley, and Doc B placers Josh McFadden of Central Union and Nick Traquato of Ponderosa.

A number of talented wrestlers who could vie for the belt include returning state qualifier Kyle Pope of Bakersfield, Doc B placer Ryan Davies of Clovis, San Diego Section runner-up Augie DeSantis of Escondido, Northern Section finalist Mark Jorgenson of Chico, and state qualifier out of the Central Section Florencio Vega of Clovis East. Preview: Two returning California state medalists appear to be the class of this field. Clovis' Dakota Gordon has been dominating his opponents this season with the exception of his sole defeat coming during a dual meet versus perennial national power St. Ed's of Ohio. Gordon rolled through the competition at last week en route to claiming the Doc Buchanan title. This week, however, Gordon may be pushed by Robert Marchese of Oak Hills. Marchese is a two time state placer and is currently undefeated at 20-0. Looking to challenge Gordon and Marchese will be Colorado state placer Brandon Tribble of Pine Creek and returning state qualifier (and undefeated wrestler) Anthony Flores of Alta Loma. Preview: Due to his school's involvement in the state football playoffs, returning state medalist Justin Walker of De La Salle is in his first major wrestling competition of the season. Despite this fact, Walker appears to be the clear favorite at this weight. Hoping to challenge Walker is Poway's Richard Durr. Durr has placed at all major competitions this year including the Reno Tournament of Champions (3rd) and the Doc B (5th). Returning state qualifier Josh Letuligasenoa will hope to avenge a double overtime loss to Durr in the fifth place match at the Doc B. Undefeated Diego Vasquez of Vista Murrieta could also surprise some people at this weight. McIntosh, McIntosh, McIntosh…What a tremendous
high school career for this outstanding wrestler from Calvary Chapel High School in Santa Ana, CA.
In the past few years, the state tournament program article that I write on the history of California wrestling, I have stated that Jason Welch, now wrestling at Northwestern, was the most dominant wrestler that I have observed in California State Tournaments. Welch was a four time state placer and three time state champion. The same record stands for Morgan McIntosh. He will have to be listed right along with Welch as completely over powering his opponents. In fact, he wasn’t scored upon offensively his last two years of high school. In addition he won the Freestyle National Championship at Fargo, as well as many other major tournaments, plus he culminated his high school wrestling career by being ranked the number one ranked high school wrestler in the U.S., as well as being named the 2011 National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award Winner.
Now Morgan will enter the next phase of his career by attending Penn State University where he will have the pleasure of working out daily with Cale Sanderson, Jake Varner, and many Penn State wrestlers. I am sure that he will be introduced quickly to one of Sanderson’s head & ankle takedowns and well as Varner’s strong half nelson.
Congratulations Morgan McIntosh and wishing you great successes at Penn State.
California All Americans: A large group of California Wrestlers were recently recognized as All Americans.
The Amateur Wrestling News announced the 2011 High School All Americans. California was well represented in the selections. Morgan McIntosh and Bryce Hammond were first team selections. Nahshon Garrett & Vince Waldhauser were second team selections. Other Californians making the “top six” were: Lucas Sheridan (4th), Nick Pena (5th) and Vince Rodriguez (6th).
In addition, the following California wrestlers were selected:
Steven Knoblauch, Fabian Garcia, Cody Tow, and Tim Box.
I am surprised that Tank Kowles was not selected at 215 pounds.
McIntosh and Hammond were also selected on the “Dream Team” by Wrestling USA Magazine. In addition Nahshon Garrett, Fabian Garcia, Vincent Rodriguez, Nick Pena, Chris Mecate and Vinny Waldhauser were all selected as All-Americans by Wrestling USA Magazine. Receiving Honorable Mention were: Cody Tow, Timmy Box, Damien Arredondo, Abel Baldazo, Preston Quam and Lucas Sheridan.
Girls Wrestling. The California State CIF held the first official Girls State Wrestling Tournament in February at Lemoore High School.
Not to be outdone by the boys, twelve California High School Girls were selected by Wrestling USA Magazine as 2011 All Americans. They are Katie Burdick (Newark), Tianna Camous (Folsom), Estera Felton (Rancho Cordova), Mabel Flores (Los Banos), Amanda Hendey (Beaumont), Hayley Kinney (Temecula), Courtney Madsen (Novato), Biri Mendoza (Selma), Alexis Rodriguez (Redlands), Jamaie Scott (Sacramento), Tamara Tillman (Santa Fe), and Jasmine Yanez (Gilroy).
STATE TOURNAMENTS: The 2012 Boys State Tournament will be held March 4-5 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
The 2012 Girls State Tournament will be held at Lemoore High School on February 25-26.
