Next Level Youth Wrestling Registration and Practices
Next Sunday Wrestling Begins - Youth Best of The Best!!
Last Winter a Training Team was compiled to advance and challenge those whose skills and abilities were above the rest. This Team represented many State Champions, State Placers and National Competitors. This fall the tradition continues while expanding into lower weights and age brackets. Ideally we are assembling a weekly Fall Sunday afternoon practice where we are targeting 9-12 year olds (50-90 Pounds) and 13-14 year olds (90-130 Pounds). Once Winter Season hits, we will return our practices to Saturday Afternoons after Metro Duals. If you feel your child/wreslter has what it takes to join the club we invite you to the challenge, however if we feel the training is to hard or out of their league will will kindly ask that you return when the the athlete(s) are ready or not at all.

TEAM EXCEL FALL NEWSLETTER, 2004
Well, I hope this finds all of you well and off to a good start with school, wrestling and life. It's been a busy five months for me since our last newsletter. The Knight family is well, but very rushed with our three kids going off in different directions. Well, to make things simpler for me, I'll try to begin back where we left off in the spring.
US Olympic Trials
The RCA Dome in Indianapolis, IN was an exciting place to be May 21-23rd. As I'm sure you are aware, Team Excel shared our last hurrah for awhile on the Senior level. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed my time working with our Team Excel Olympic level wrestlers over the past eight years. It hasn't been easy to keep this part of our operation alive, but we hung in there to see our athletes through two US Olympic trials.
Both Tony DeAnda and Ramico Blackmon qualified for the trials, both placing in the top six in the country. Ramico's tournament was hard for Mac and I to handle because of the way it ended. Ramico was in the finals of the mini tournament with the winner advancing into the final two out of three bout the next day to make the US Olympic team. With 10,000 people in the arena, the Blackmon/Heskett match up was definitely going to be one of the best matches of the finals. Disappointing to us, Ramico was called on a roll through touch fall that in our book was absolutely the worst call of the entire tournament. Worse yet, it happened after he scored the first taken in about the first 30 seconds. Disappointing to say the least.
For all you young Excel guys getting this newsletter, here's a story for you. I didn't take the loss very well and it took me a couple hours after initially talking to Ramico to speak with him more. Not because I was at all disappointed in Ramico's wrestling, just devastated by the call. I finally sat down with Ramico, not really knowing what to say. Instead he did the talking and basically he told me that what happened is a part of life and no one, no matter how hard you work can ever predict what's going to happen on the mat and that it wouldn't be easy, but he could live with it. As he put it, life goes on Steve, but there's more ahead, I know God has better things ahead for me in this life and I can't wait to see where I'm lead to next. This guys is a man of character and conviction. Ramico has always been exactly that, calm, cool, collected and always looking at life in the positive.
Tony had a fine tournament, too. He badly injuried his knee, but somehow continued to wrestle placing 6th.
Tony is finally scheduled for knee surgery next week.
Congratulations to Tony and Ramico on an incredible life of wrestling for both of them and quality performances at the US Olympic Trials.
Silver College Coaches Clinic
Also at the trials was the USAW Silver College Coaches Clinic. I worked with Troy Steiner and Terry Brands. We each spent a few hours working with the high school coaches who were attempting to gain their silver certification. The clinic went well. Ted Witulski, NCEP Director for USAW did a nice job.
The Future of the Team Excel Olympic Level Club
As I stated earlier, we will not continue the Team Excel "Olympic Level" Program. It has been a hardship on our organization for several years, especially since 9-11 in 2001. We have produced a top level team for two Olympic cycles - 8 years in all, with several wrestlers reaching All American status, winning national and international titles and two 2nd place team finishes at the US National Open.
It's been so enjoyable to work with these guys and I'm thankful that Excel Wrestling had the opportunity to compete on this level for so long. Maybe we'll get the chance to do it again someday.
I have been asked to coach for the New York Athletic Club for this season. Tony DeAnda, will also be competing for the NYAC. I am honored to be a part of the NYAC coaching staff. No, I won't be moving to New York City. Many of these athletes either already train at the Olympic Training Center or they spend several weeks of the year here when they're not training at the NYAC.
Sonny Greenhalgh has served as the Wrestling Chairman for many years at the NYAC and does a fantastic job. The NYAC has the longest track record of any US Olympic level club in the country. All sports included, 42 athletes from the New York Athletic Club competed in this year's Athens Olympics.
We just returned from the Sunkist International in Tempe, AZ in late October for the very first competition of the new year. The AC had two finalists in freestyle, Clint Wattenburg at 84kg ( now an assistant with Cornell University). Clint lost a one point match to Lee Fullhardt. Also David Rechul took second at 96kg. David trains at the OTC in Colorado Springs. He lost a very close match in the finals to Tommy Rowlands, former Ohio State NCAA Champ. Also good to see former Colorado High School Excel wrestler Malcolm Havens competing at Sunkist. Malcolm also wrestled at 96kgs, and will be competing for the University of Wyoming this year at 197lbs.
Real Pro Wrestling
If you haven't heard, many of the best wrestlers in the country just completed competition in Los Angeles for Real Pro Wrestling. Never in my life have I seen wrestling like I saw at the Real Pro event. I coached the New York team with Shawn Sheldon. We are held to confidentiality as far as how the competition went at each weight, etc., so I won't share it. But I will say this, it will be on tv in February, every week on the Pax Channel.
Don't miss it. It should be good!
Team Excel Summer Competition Champions
Congratulations to Tony Mustari of Greeley, for another great showing at Fargo this summer. Tony was 7th in Greco and 4th in Freestyle at 112lbs in the Junior Division. Also from our Team Excel Year Round Program was Tyler Graff of Loveland. Tyler was second in the Fargo Cadet Nationals at 98lbs. Also from our program was Ian Heinisch of Parker, who took 7th in Greco at 160lbs. and Pat Armstrong, with an outstanding showing placing 4th in Greco at 152lbs.
At the Kids USAW Nationals, three Team Excel wrestlers became Youth All Americans. Jered Cortez of Broomfield won the National title in both Freestyle and Greco at 60lbs. Nick Brascetta of Aurora, won the National title in Greco and placed 3rd in Freestyle at 80lbs and Courtland Hacker of Broomfield placed fourth in Greco at 65lbs. Way to go you guys, awesome showing for Team Excel and for the state of Colorado.
I hope to see more of our Excel wrestlers stepping up and taking advantage of the 2005 summer freestyle and Greco competition.
2004 Team Excel Summer Training Camps
Our summer camps just continue to get a little better each summer. Again this summer, we had some great clinicians working with the kids and our numbers overall were high.
Our New Technique & Intensity Camp in Denver brought in close to 100 wrestlers. In Estes, our Personal Training Camp was again at capacity this year, being limited to 24 high school wrestlers and 24 junior wrestlers. We had our largest ever Maui Team Camp with almost 70 wrestlers from 5 states attending including 4 Hawaiian islands. I love working with the Hawaii kids. They're hard workers and just love to wrestle, not to mention, they're strong and very talented. Two of Hawaii's best are Grant Nakamura, a two time Maui Baldwin HS State Champ, now wrestling varsity for Iowa State and Oahu's St. Louis HS 4 time State Champ, Travis Lee who is now wrestles for Cornell University, a two time Division I NCAA All American and one time NCAA Champion.
For the very first time in four summers, one of our Colorado wrestlers went undefeated throughout the entire week in competition in Hawaii. Troy Lussenhop, who's now wrestling in college at Ft. Hayes State went undefeated throughout the entire dual meet competition. It's a tough camp, good job Troy.
Our annual National Team Dual Camp brought into Estes 20 teams with over 200 wrestlers from seven states. A tough team battle with several time State Champions - Helias HS in Missouri and former Excel Team Camp champs from Dickinson, ND were in the scrap with Ponderosa HS of Parker, CO. Ponderosa won the team competition on the mat. Northeast HS of Bryant, IA led by my lifelong friend and former teammate JD Lueders won the off the mat competition. Congratulations to all the coaches and their teams who attended the Team Camp this summer.
2004 Fall and Winter Break Training Camp / 4th Annual Excel 'Hall of Heroes' Tribute Dinner
Excel Wrestling enters into the 11th annual Winter Break Training Camp this December. We also expect to have a fall camp this year to prepare for some of the Preseason National tournaments. The Excel Fall Camp is scheduled for the evenings of November 10th and 11th. The camp is being held in memory of John R. Olivas, Jr., who was a scholarship athlete at UNC and a former state champion for Roosevelt HS in Johnstown, CO. Coach Mike Pallotto and the Roosevelt wrestling program will host the camp.
The dates for the Winter Break Camp this year are December 20, 21, 22nd. We will again have two locations, one in North Denver at Sunset School in Longmont, CO and the South Denver location in Parker, CO at Ponderosa High School.
We will be honoring our three USAW National Team Head Coaches, Steve Frazer, Terry Steiner and Kevin Jackson at our 4th Annual Excel "Hall of Heroes" Tribute Dinner. All these guys coached medallists in Athens and have done a terrific job representing the US in international competition. We will roast these gentleman downtown Denver in the ballroom at the Denver Athletic Club with several other local champions being present on the evening of Sunday, December 19, 2004.
We would especially like to ask all Excel family members to attend. The cost per plate is $50, with wrestler's plates being $30. As in the past, we expect it to be a great event and a night to remember. Please contact our office if you need more information. If you or your business is interested in sponsoring a table or a high school coach, please call our office. We are also looking for raffle prizes.
Excel Wrestling Comes to the Western Slope
For the very first time this year, we have established an Excel Year Round Training Program location on the Western Slope in Grand Junction. The program is being headed up by former Western State NCAA All American Anthony Guillen. Anthony has done an excellent job this fall.
Excel Wrestling will also offer for the first time this year, a Western Slope Winter Break Training Camp scheduled for Wednesday, December 22nd and Thursday, December 23rd. I plan to have both Coach Guillen and 2 time NCAA Finalist and Olympic trials place finisher Ryan Lewis present as clinicians at the camp.
Thank you to several of the area coaches on the Western Slope for their interest and enthusiasm to support our program there and get things kicked off this fall.
2004 Athens Olympics
It was an honor to be a part of this years coaching staff in Athens. The summer drew long for me with two work outs a day in the Springs with our Team Camp in Estes, thrown in the middle. The 2004 Olympic team trained through two 10 day cycles, one in early July and the other in late July, both training camps being held at the OTC. It was interesting from a coaching standpoint to see the difference in our team from the first camp to the second. Conditioning improved, technique sharpened and attitudes lifted I thought the closer we got to competition. After finishing the last camp in Colorado Springs, the team was allowed to go home for a little over a week, before flying to Athens in mid August. Once in Athens, the arrangements were great.
We stayed in a hotel that was close to the American College of Greece, where we actually had our own little American Olympic Village. The facility was restricted to only USOC athletes and coaches. We had great accomodations, plenty of mat space, a beautiful running track, weight room, film rooms, pool, suana and a good cafeteria. It worked out well and I know the athletes enjoyed it.
Well, you know the results and I'll just say, I saw hard work pay off. Needless to say, I was disappointed that a few more didn't get in there for medal finishes, but overall, it was a great Olympic Games. Athens stepped up and did a fantastic job. It was awesome experience.
The Team Excel Year Round Training Program Is Off to a Good Start
Locations for this year's Team Excel Year Round Training Program are:
Wyoming location, Cheyenne East HS, Cheyenne, WY
North Denver location, Boulder Valley YMCA, Lafayette, CO
South Denver location, Grandview High School, Aurora, CO
Front Range location, Himmelman Facility, Lakewood, CO
Western Slope location, Grand Junction HS, Grand Junction, CO
Thanks to the help of Wyoming State Coach Jason Nickal and the Wyoming USAW state board, the nation's very first Junior Olympic Program was endorsed by USA Wrestling in early August for the state of Wyoming. Over 25 wrestlers are participating. Coaches Barrett Golyer and George Thompson have done an excellent job this fall. Thanks again to all the coaches who played a part in making this program a reality. I know many wrestlers will advance to the next level of achievement with the help of this program.
Overall in Colorado, with four locations and 125 wrestlers participating this year, many having opportunities for great things, too. Thanks to all the club and high school coaches who support these programs and a special thanks to this year's coaching staff for their many hours of hard work with the wrestlers: Juan Venturi, Eric Albarracin, Reid Delmann, Tony DeAnda, Kevin Ramsay, George Thompson, Paul Katz, Anthony Guillen and Ryan Lewis. A special thanks as well to our Program Coordinator Spencer Jemelka. Without Spencer, we wouldn't be where we're at right now. Thanks for all your hard work Spencer.
Excel Wrestling Approved as Junior Olympic Program for Colorado
This is an article recently published on themat.com
USA Wrestling National Junior Olympic Programs Begin in Iowa and Colorado
USA Wrestling has endorsed two more organizations to run as official Junior Olympic Programs in Iowa and Colorado. The very first Junior Olympic Program was approved last month for the state of Wyoming, headed up by WAWA State Coach Jason Nickal.
In Iowa, the Golden Eagles Wrestling Club, under the leadership of Head Coach and Director Keith Massey has kicked off already for the 2004-2005 school year. The Golden Eagles operate their facility in Council Bluffs, IA and have had tremendous success. Keith coached at the 2004 US Olympic Trials last spring in Indianapolis and has sent wrestlers from his program on to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to be a part of the US Resident Athlete Program.
Coach Massey added, "We have always been strong supporters of USA Wrestling and we are honored to have this endorsement for the state of Iowa. I would also like to thank Coach Steve Knight for all his hard work with USA Wrestling in establishing the parameters for this program."
In Colorado, Excel Wrestling has also been approved and designated as a Junior Olympic Program for the state. Excel Wrestling has had a strong presence in Colorado wrestling for the past ten years. Many of the Excel wrestlers have gone on to claim USA Kids National titles, Fargo All American and National Championship titles as well as achieving college NCAA Division I All American status.
The 2005 season will mark the 12th year for Excel Wrestling running various camps throughout the state, as well as their 9th season of the Team Excel Year Round Training Program.
Their Junior Olympic Program Coordinator Spencer Jemelka, who also grew up in the Excel program commented, "I'm thrilled that the program has now received the endorsement for the Junior Olympic Program designation. Excel Wrestling has touched the lives of so many wrestlers in Colorado and from around the country. I hope to see the program continue to do so for years to come."
For the Iowa Junior Olympic Program, call Keith Massey at 402.203.1610. For more information in Colorado, call Program Coordinator Spencer Jemelka at 719.406.8871.USA Wrestling National Junior Olympic Programs Begin in Iowa and Colorado.
Best of luck to all of you this season! Work hard during our Winter Season practices. I hope you and your family will try to attend the Excel "Hall of Heroes" Tribute Dinner on Dec. 19th and one of our upcoming camps. I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and a great start on the season.
Work hard, set your goals now, prepare your mind and sweat everyday!!
Thanks for caring and supporting our program,
Steve

By ALLEN GEMAEHLICH
The Daily Sentinel
Next winter won't be an easy one for Stacey Burke.
The longtime Palisade High School wrestling coach has retired from the sport and plans to retire from teaching after next school year.
"More than anything, it seemed like it would be a good time for the program to get a new person in there," he said.
Burke, who was the first coach at Palisade to have a winning dual meet record, admitted it will be hard to not be coaching after more than 30 years.
"Next year when it all starts it will be awful hard not to be there," he said. "I have some mixed emotions over it. I've been coaching since 1964."
Burke coached for 33 years, including the last 16 at Palisade, where he coached 11 state champions, 42 state medalists and had at least one state placer 15 of his 16 years at Palisade. He was 103-73 in duals with seven top-10 finishes at state.
"I had probably two or three things stand out," Burke said. "I coached four state championship teams and two runners-up, but they were all in Nebraska. Here, coaching my own children was a huge highlight. Dan, who was a three-time state champ, and Jon wrestled for me. It's the ultimate having your own kids in the program and succeed. It's a nice feeling."
He started coaching high school wrestling in 1971-72 in Franklin, Neb., then coached at Clay Center, Neb., before moving to Palisade.
"It was a death in the family," said Burke of coming to Palisade. "We came out for the funeral. My wife's mother wanted somebody close by. It so happened the weekend I was here, there was an opening at Palisade. While I was here, I wrote a letter, interviewed two weeks later and got the job."
Burke was never able to win a state team title at Palisade.
"There's always things wish you could've improved on," he said. "The closest we came to a championship was third, but we doubled the number of state placers since the program started in 1948. In 15 years, we doubled the state placers."
Burke got his coaching start early.
Former Grand Junction High School coach Carl Cox asked Burke, then a junior for the Tigers, to help coach a junior high program. He wrestled at Mesa Junior College and Western State College before taking over the Montrose Junior High School program.
He was hired as the head wrestling coach at Franklin High School in Franklin, Neb., in 1971 and took over a two-year-old program. While there, Burke produced an individual state champion his first year. Within six years, Franklin had a team state championship.
By the time he took the Palisade job, Burke had won four Nebraska state team titles.
At Palisade, Burke was assisted by Brian Rush, who was a two-time state wrestling champion at Fruita Monument High School.
"Stacey's had a great career," Rush said. "He had a lot of great teams and great wrestlers. There's no doubt wrestlers owe him a great thanks. He's definitely had some good wrestlers and I've enjoyed being an assistant. Anytime you are under someone with 30 years experience, you get a lot of knowledge."
Colorado's 1st ever 4X Undefeated 5A State Wrestling Champion
Kyle Sand of Arvada West High School breaks Joel Gilmore's 4X State Champion record at Arvada West, by being the 1st ever Colorado Undefeated Class 5A 4X State wrestling Champion. Both Gilmore and Sand won 4 state titles while wrestling at Arvida West, but last night at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships Kyle Sand raised the standards even higher, he finished with a record of 125-0. He wrestled at 160 as a Freshmen, 171 as a Sophomore, 189 as a Junior, and Senior
Kyle is unsigned at this time but is looking forward to wrestling in college at a division 1
School.

Team Excel Impacts Colorado Wrestling
Over the past ten years, the Team Excel wrestling organization has continued
to grow, having a profound impact on Colorado wrestling. Steve Knight, Head
Coach and Executive Director of Excel Wrestling commented, "Absolutely,
Colorado wrestling is coming on strong. If our organization has played a
part in that, I'm appreciative that we were given the opportunity. It's all
about the kids and their futures, that's where we put our focus."
When Knight says "kids", he's really referring to all levels of the Team
Excel organization. Team Excel happens to be one of the only wrestling
operations nationwide that impacts the lives of athletes at every stage from
youth to the Olympic level. The Team Excel senior level team trains at the
US Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, CO. The youth and high school
programs run year round in both North and South Denver with a summer program
in Estes Park, CO.
Part of the reason Knight's wrestlers have stepped it up is because of their
competition schedule. Team Excel competes nationally on all levels
throughout the year. Knight reacted, "It's really because these guys are
hungry and they want to compete." This fall Team Excel senior level
wrestlers will compete at the Sunkist International in Tempe, Arizona, along
with youth and high school wrestlers competing both at the "Tournament of
Champions" Fall Classic in Columbus, Ohio and the Cliff Keen Kick Off
Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
This sentiment seems to have become contagious throughout the entire state
as a matter of fact. Many Colorado wrestlers are traveling out of state to
some of the toughest tournaments in the country. Within the state, the high
school state championships have been known for their high attendance
records, but more recently, there's a lot of talk about the talent pool and
skill level apparent within Colorado wrestling.
Team Excel is having an impact in Colorado wrestling, but it's more than
that. Knight commented that leagues and different associations are
beginning to work together and it's the kind of unification that will
continue to bring Colorado to the forefront.
This past summer, two Team Excel wrestlers representing Colorado USA
Wrestling won national championships in freestyle and Greco Roman. Tony
Mustari of Greeley, CO claimed the freestyle 105lbs Fargo USAW Junior
National title while Team Excel youth wrestler Duke Pickett of Loveland, CO
claimed the Greco Roman USAW National Championship in Enid, OK. "These guys
are an inspiration not only to the wrestlers in our program, but to all of
Colorado wrestling, said Knight. They are proving it can be done here."
The Team Excel organization works in cooperation with local clubs and high
school programs within the state and attributes their success to the support
they receive from high school and club coaches in Colorado. The clubs and
high schools act as a feeder system for Excel Wrestling, giving wrestlers
the opportunity to represent Colorado on the national level.
Team Excel is also very interested in moving their wrestlers on to the
college level. Arno Niemand, a member of the Excel Wrestling Board of
Directors, who also supports USA Wrestling and Cornell University had this
to say, "Our board has identified some long term dreams for our wrestlers
that we hope will someday become a reality. After high school, we want to
see our kids go on to compete on the college level. We want them to have
successful academic and athletic careers, with the opportunity to then
return home being in a position to train at the US Olympic Center in
Colorado Springs. We consider it a chance of a life time to pursue National
and Olympic goals before heading forward with the rest of what life has to
offer."
Fifty two Colorado state titles have been won by Team Excel wrestlers in the
past seven seasons. Many of these wrestlers went on to compete on the
college level. Aaron Paterson wrestled 141lbs for Lehigh University, Sean
Wing wrestled heavyweight for Cornell University, Andy Swanson wrestled
197lbs for Arizona State University, Tony Moore wrestled 157lbs for the
University of Oklahoma and more recently, Scott Frohardt, became an NCAA All
American for the Air Force Academy at 149lbs in 2001.
Currently, Team Excel wrestlers are competing at several in-state schools
including Division I bound University of Northern Colorado, the University
of Wyoming and the University of Nebraska. Colorado standout and Team Excel
wrestler Tommy Clum is competing at 125lbs this season for the University of
Wisconsin.
"We're thankful to have the support and guidance of great men and women on
our board and everything we're involved in is a team effort among our
coaching staff - Mike McArthur, Dave and Phil Nowick, Greg Chirieleison and
Dwight Hinson in Iowa. It's also a kick to have our senior level wrestlers
giving their time to the young guys," Knight added.
Some of the roster for the Team Excel senior level includes 2 time All
American Tony DeAnda, former ISU assistant CC Fisher, ISU grad and now Phd.
Ron Groves, Princeton grad Juan Venturi and National Freestyle Champion
Ramico Blackmon.
Excel Wrestling is currently being considered for a designation through the
United States Olympic Committee as an Olympic Development Program. Excel
Wrestling runs year round training programs in both Colorado and Iowa. For
