I attended the annual rule changes meeting as a coach not as
a reporter, but I must say I decided to outline the new rules
to make it easier for coaches to understand. The rules can be
confusing if you read too much into them, but I have tried to
make them as simple as possible without losing the intent of the
rule.
The first rule is an old rule revised. Let me be very clear this
rule was abused last year to a tee. The old weigh in rule procedure,
coaches let their athletes leave the room during weigh INS, run
in place, or come in _ hour after the heavyweights have weighed
in. Well that is no longer the case. I know some coaches will
do what it takes to get around this rule but it is pretty black
and white. Here are the highlights of this rule:
-The home team will designate a weigh in area
-Any away team can arrive early to the site to check their weights
-When weigh INS start, all wrestlers must me in weigh in area
-Weigh in from 103-275 in order
-If an athlete is not prepared to weigh in when his weight is
called, he does not participate
-Athletes are allowed to spit, but can not do any activity such
as jogging, jumping rope, or push ups
-Athletes can use the bathroom, with the permission of the official
that is present or the opposing coach, provided he is back to
weigh in at his weight class
-Athletes who do not make weight can step on and off a total of
3 times (2 times after the first weigh in) to account for mechanical
difficulties
-Athletes are encouraged to weigh in backwards by the officials
-If after 3 attempts at making weight and the athlete does not
make weight, he is no longer eligible for that weight class
-Their will now be weigh INS each day for a 2 day tournament
-The second day of a 2-day tournament will be a 1lb allowance
-CT has again adopted the 2lb growth allowance on January 15th
-All strip down weigh INS for women athletes must be down by another
woman. To ensure honesty one woman representing each team can
be present
The second area of revision is the weight certification. To certify
an athlete at a weight in the past, the athlete must be certified
before the first competition. It will no longer be that early,
but coaches can do certification as early as they want. Here are
the highlights of this rule:
-Weight certification must be done by January 15th
-An athlete who is not certified by this date is not eligible
to compete
-Athletes must certify at dead weights
-All paperwork will be submitted online to the CIAC at www.casciac.org
-Athletic directors have the password to submit the information
online
-Maximum number of weigh INS is 18
-Obtain copies of weigh in sheets at meets to avoid controversy
-Obtain a final printed copy of the information submitted online
and be sure it is correct
The next rule that has been revised is the scream rule. In the
past back points have been awarded when near fall is eminent.
However, some athletes took it upon themselves to not only scream
but also pull hair, bite, or eye gauge. Well now if an athlete
screams while near fall is eminent or has been met and he eye
gauges (or etc) the offensive wrestler will receive back points
plus points for the illegal move.
In the past a wrestler can get away with throwing or kicking almost
anything but his headgear. Not the case any more. If anything
is thrown or kicked by an athlete the result will be a team point.
The athlete must also show up on the mat ready to wrestle. This
rule is an old rule, but now the penalties are much more strict.
If an athlete is not prepared to wrestle the result is 1 team
point, 1 match point and injury time is started. If this occurs
twice the coach will be ejected.
Some coaches in the last seconds of a huge dual meet may ask their
wrestler to hang out or stall. Knowing if their athlete does not
get pinned the dual match will result in a tie. All ties will
now be broken by a series of criteria that the referee and rulebooks
will detail. But I can say one-thing penalties are criteria.
In the past an athlete can show up at a match with a note from
his doctor stating he can wrestle even though he has lesions.
Well there is new form in the packet that is much more descriptive.
The doctor will not only have to sign the date the athlete was
treated but also must give the date of return along with his/her
address and phone number. This form and only this form will allow
an athlete to wrestle.
In closing I feel these rules will be adopted well by the coaches
in CT. After all we are in this for the kids, and ethically speaking
we, as coaches would not want to injury an athlete in any way.
The problem is that every once in awhile you will find a coach
who not only bends the rules but breaks them. But I think that
these rules are pretty cut and dry and in order to break these
rules you will have to go to great lengths. For you coaches who
always abide by the rules I commend you, you are role models for
everyone including parents and referees. Speaking of referees,
this year take a moment to log on to www.ciwoa.com and fill out
an evaluation form on the referee's. This will help the grading
of ref's and you will get the best ref's in the state open. It
will also be used as a teaching tool for the ref's who have difficulties
in certain areas. We are all human and make mistakes, but at least
we know there is effort put into getting better.
Have a wonderful season. The above is in no way shape or form
the rules as it is written or applied. This is just a summary
and a guideline for you as coaches to follow.

Offers Recruiting Program To New England Wrestlers

Jim Maher of Dedham Massachusetts is offering a recruiting program to New England wrestlers. What is so unique about the program, you ask? Well as Jim puts it, "I will forward the Scholastic/Athletic resumes to these coaches for a fee. Cost= A Thank You only." Jim is offering to help get exposure to New England Athletes on a national level.
Jim a long time high school coach at Randolph, Mass and Brockton, Mass has seen the need for this exposure and made his goals clear. "I would love to see more Mass & NE Wrestlers get recruited nationwide. Why, because hopefully one day you will come back to Mass and Coach at the HS level. If our Wrestlers go to PA, NY, OH, IA, OK, NJ, MI & CA and learn new styles and point of views, it will help move us in the right direction." Jim is currently the MIAA division 3-tournament director and Dedham Youth Coach.
Jim has compiled a list of 120 college coaches nationwide. In order to participate in this program you will need to contact Jim via email at james.maher@verizon.com. He will then have you fill out a recruiting questionnaire and forward your information to the collegiate level. The program has had its share of success stories. "I filled out Coach Maher's info sheet for my son at 9:00 by 10:00 I had an inquiry from a coach. I am impressed," said Mr. Moriocne about his son Phil from NH. Brian Hayes from CT stated, "My son Anthony has been contacted through mail by many schools wrestling teams and by phone by 4 or 5 that he never sent anything to himself."
Connecticut
Wrestlers Venture To The College Ranks
Many of Connecticut's top wrestlers have chosen to attend college
in the fall and plan to
prove their worth on and off the mat. Luis Murillo a 3 time academic
all state wrestler,
state champion, and Connecticut's outstanding wrestler from Platt
High School in
Meriden will take his 3.8 GPA and 152 high school wins to the
next level. Luis leads a class of athletes who have made plans
to compete at the next level. Luis Murillo (Platt) will attend
Trinity College. Bret Scholnick (Hand) will attend Boston University,
Greg Pace (Bethel) and Adam Karasevicz (Waterford) will attend
Brown University, and Clayton Torres (Platt) will attend Norwich
University.
