Sals Topple William Penn 44-16
New Castle, DE-Saturday, January 12, 2006-The 6th ranked Sals of Salesianum with 2 falls 3 major decisions and 2 technical falls defeated the 7th ranked and previously undefeated Colonials of William Penn by a 44-16 score. This was Salesianum's first win over the Colonials since 2004 when they prevailed by a 43-15 score.
The matched started at 112 where the Colonials Mike Spriggs won by a major decision over Ben Zingaro by a 19-7 score the Colonials led 4-0 in the team score. Danny Graham's followed with a 5:15 fall over Dave Vitalo at 119 put the Sals up 6-4. William Penn regained the lead 7-6 as the Colonial TJ Casula's 7-2 victory over Cameron Szymanski 125 pounds.
The Sals in the next 4 weight classes led 26-7 on victories by Sevy Cordero's 12-2 major decision over Patrick Draper at 130 Joe Potts' 8-3 decision over Chris Raynes at 135, Andrew Peterson's 56 second fall over Brad Wozniak at 140, Andrew Antonio's 8-5 win over Zack Holder at 145 and Derrick Diksa's 12-4 major decision over Sharif Givens.
At 160, Keith Hynson won by a forfeit for the Colonials and Gabe DeAscanis won by a forfeit for the Sals made the score 32-13.
In the next two weight classes, at 189, Eric Peoples' 12-4 major decision over David Broadwater and Carl Marsini's 3-2 win over David Hunt at 215 put the Sals up 39-13.
The Colonials John Gibson recorded the other win as he defeated Larry Cassidy 5-2 made the score 39-16 and in the last meet at 103, Chris Donaldson's 17-1 technical fall decision over Hugh Bayard made the final score 44-16 in favor of the Sals.
I figured that we needed to get through the middle weight especially at 130, 135 140, 145 and 152, that's where our strength is, our upper weights were close matches." said Salesianum head coach Cameron Davis. " William Penn's John Gibson wrestled Larry Cassidy the last time and it was a 1 point contest. My heavyweight wrestled well but John Gibson is a tough young man." When you wrestle William Penn, you have to come prepared and Marvin Dooley does a good job in getting them ready and prepared." In our first four matches we hopes to get through that those matches from 112 to 125, the contests were up in the air at 130, Sevy Cordero wrestling for us well and Joe Potts followed up with a win in his match. From 160 pounds up to 189 pounds, those were the big wins for us today.

Smyrna Wrestlers Compete on Team Delaware in North Dakota and Tennesee
Submitted by Kurt Howell, Smyrna High varsity wrestling coach: What did you do last summer? Thousands of high school students will answer this question in essay form upon their return to English classes. And, while most will respond with stories of state fairs and beach vacations, a select few will write about their training in preparation for the largest wrestling tournaments in the country. These elite athletes from the Smyrna Wrestling Travel Team competed as members of Team Delaware in Fargo, North Dakota and Knoxville, Tennessee.
Six Smyrna area wrestlers went to North Dakota for the Junior and Cadet National Championships. Jason Baker, Donnie Messick, David Hershberger, Spencer Rhoades, Barry Reece and Stephen Swiggett went to this competition, which is the largest wrestling tournament in the world with over 3,000 wrestlers competing for a chance to be All-American.
Spencer Rhoades was a junior varsity wrestler for Smyrna High School last winter. And, while he did not win a match in either style, he is sure that the experience prepared him for varsity competition. Especially since he wrestled against double national champion Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin in both styles. „I wrestled the national champion on center stage and got his leg,‰ he said, referring to an attempted takedown when he wrestled Thielke on mat one, which is on an elevated stage in the center of the Fargo Dome. „Who can say that?‰
Stephen Swiggett had one of the more surprising performances from Delaware. In freestyle, Swiggett carried three wins into the fifth round of the competition before he bowed out to All-American Kyle Bradley from Missouri. In one of the most exciting matches of the tournament he nearly upended Adam Frey from top-ranked Blair Academy. Swiggett used two explosive moves to gain a 5-3 lead on the All-American before being pinned with his own move. Not bad for a second year wrestler competing in his first freestyle competition ever!
Donnie Messick won two matches in freestyle before running into the eventual national champion. And Jason Baker and Barry Reece won a match in both styles. Bob Baker (Jason‚s father) remarked, „Do you realize that four wrestlers from Smyrna ran into the national champion in their weight class. What an awesome experience!‰
In other competition, Cody Carbine and David Hershberger wrestled in the AAU National Duals in Tennessee. Through the dual meet event Hershberger finished an impressive run at 103 pounds with a 10-4 record while Cody Carbine ended up 9-6.
It was a huge sacrifice of time and effort. Most of these wrestlers put aside vacations, suntans and beach fries for a training schedule that could rival the regimen of ancient Spartan warriors. And while their summer fun was significantly shortened they all understand the payoff it will have in future battles. As the motto on their Smyrna Travel Team shirts point out, „What did you do last summer?‰
The commitment in time and sweat was matched by the expenses needed for these trips and the Smyrna Wrestling Travel Team would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous donations toward helping them compete: Kent Construction; Pinewood Acres LLC; Fletcher Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning; Hurley‚s Fix It, Richard W. Downes State Farm Insurance; Towles Electric Inc.; Smyrna Diner; Team Smyrna; Reece Family Miniatures; First State Equipment Inc.; Faries Funeral Directors Inc.; JTL & Son Inc.; Bobby Clark Stables; Wayside Inn; Ralph Cahall & Son Paving Inc.; Carter-Trettel Agency ˆ Joe Trettel; Webber Farms; Ash‚s Equipment Rentals Inc.; Kenton Ruritan Club; Victor Colbert Construction; Terri A Ford; Steven Nowak; Tom Gares Trucking Co.; John‚s Well Drilling Inc.; Matrix Service; Brandywine Smyrna Inc.; John Messick Construction Inc.; Boondocks Restaurant; Ewing Towing; and RWM Embroidery & More.

Caravel Academy Wrestling Team on the Rise
|
For Caravel Academy, a seventy five acre college preparatory private school located in Bear, De was founded in 1979 by the late Robert C. Peoples, a builder, former teacher, father and philanthropist. Their athletic programs have won numerous state softball, baseball titles along with 3 Division II football titles and the wrestling team on the rise. In 1990 Chad Poultney was Caravel Academyís only finalist by finishing in second place at 160 pounds where he was defeated by Indian Riverís Preston Turnage by a 13-6 score.
In 2004, Matt Zambinini was named head wrestling coach of Caravel and has improved the program by scheduling tougher competition. In 2005 Caravel had its finalist in Jarrod Garnett, as he finished in 2nd place by being defeated by Connor McDonald of Sussex Central by a technical fall and teammate Alfonso Hoggard placed third at 125 pounds and after a good year in eighth grade after a 0-2 start in the 2004 state tournament Vinnie Ranauto at 152 in his sophomore year finished in second place by losing to Nick Dominelli of Salesianum by a 3-2 score.
In 2006, the Bucs for the first time in their history of their wrestling program was selected for the Division II Dual Meet Wrestling Tournament and was defeated in the first round. At the open states Jarrod Garnett finished in 2nd place at 119 pounds by losing to Nick Tiberi by a close 7-5 score, Luke Rebertus a transfer from McDonough School in Baltimore at 160 and Vinnie Ranauto at 171 made history by becoming Caravelís first two state wrestling champions.
Caravelís Academyís Jarrod Garnett, Alfonso Hoggard, Luke Rebertus and Vinnie Ranauto win state titles Bucs have 6 state titlists
By David A. Willauer-Staff Reporter-Sussex Central High School-Georgetown, DE-2-25-07: For new head coach Joey Archangelo, a bunch of firsts came in his debut as four Caravel Buccaneers won their state titles as 2 time runnerup Jarrod Garnett, a 2 time runnerup and teammate Alfonso Hoggard, a two time 3rd placefinisher in 2005 and 2006 both won their first state titles
Jarrod Garnett winning his first state title: ìit felt great after finishing second for two years in a row I finally won my state title, the last time I wrestled Zach Taylor was in the dual meet tournament first round where I defeated him 24-9 I knew that he was going to come after me and I came with it I am sick and I had to give it my all out there I felt good out there Coach Archangelo prepares us for the third period where itís going to be tough and overtimes added we are in great condition.î
After 2 years, our team has improved a lot by scheduling tougher tournaments this year that was a big part of it we were as good as last year but a lot better the Easton Duals were good but the Beast of the East tournament where finished 2nd that is where itís at.î I want to go to Division I college I make sure I perform under these coaches.î
Alfonso Hoggard winning his first state title: ìI worked hard at the beginning of the season I struggled coming out after football I lost my first five meets at the beginning of the season and won my last six ever since Iím at the top of the line.î
ìIn my first match I won by a tech fall in 4:21 over Trevor Ricker of Cape Henlopen in the quarter final I had to get up for my second match against Cody Carbine of Smyrna which was the talk around town I was fired up for that match I took it to him and in my semi final match was against Steve Brown of Sussex Central where I won 12-5 everything was coming and did my job.î ìI watched Todd Koch throughout the state tournament and he likes to shoot the single my job is to keep my legs back so once when he did get on the my leg I muscled him up and won.î ì It feels great for me to win a state title after wrestling for four years.î
Caravel Luke Rebertus Wins 2nd State Title
By David A. Willauer-Staff Reporter-For the second time in a row at the 2007 DIAA State Open Wrestling Tournament Caravel Academy and US Naval Academy bound Luke Rebertus won his 2nd Delaware State High School Wrestlng title after a 2006 win at Delaware State University by a 13-0 score, defeated Mt. Pleasant Highís Jacque Scott by a 10-0 score.
ìI really wanted to get this second state title out of my way I am going to the senior wrestling nationals out in Pittsburgh, PA at the end of March and hopefully place there Jacque is a tough opponent its good to pull the win.î ìI was nervous today he had a real close match in one of the opponents that I barely defeated I knew he was going to come out tough but I had to wrestle better.î ìCoach Archangelo has been helpful to me a lot and pushed me in the wrestling room I have been in good shape this year everything he has done has helped me win the state title this year.î
Caravel Academyís Vinnie Ranauto wins 2nd State Wrestling Title
By David A. Willauer-Staff Reporter-Sussex Central High School-Georgetown, DE: 2-24-07: In his eighth grade season at Caravel Academy, Vinnie Ranauto knows what it takes to improve his skills, after an 0-2 start and being eliminated in the state tournament to his sophomore year at 152 to a 3-2 defeat of Nick Dominelli of Salesianum in the state finals. The junior of the Bucs wrestling squad in 2006 at 171 won his first state title by upsetting senior defending state champion Andy Bokinsky of Indian River by a 3-2 score at 171 and in 2007 defeated William Penn Highís Mike Delduca by a 7-4 score.
ìIt was a big win for me and wanted to get this second state championship under my belt and hopefully go for a third next year he seemed (Delduca) confident and William Penn wrestlers are always tough he is very aggressive when I led the match 4-3, he got a stalling point to tie the score at 4-4 I snapped his head spun around to go behind and won 6-4.î ìWinning my second state title was the best thing in the world.î
Delmar High's Darren Collins Finally Wins Henlopen Conference Title Looks for State Title
For Darren Collins of Delmar, it has been a long haul , after a freshman year by finishing 6th in the Henlopen Conference Championships and losing 2 matches in 2004 States to two outstanding sophomore and junior years by finishing in third place in the conference and state tournaments, senior heavyweight Darren Collins out of Delmar High School, between the Maryland-Delaware Border and known for its Friday night lights high school football in the Henlopen Conference where he lettered both offense and defense won the 2007 Henlopen Conference wrestling title by pinning Caesar Rodney's Adrian Tucker in 1:22 when Nathan Shearer won in 2000 and became the first Wildcat Wrestler to win 150 matches along with 16 defeats and will take his next goal to next week's state tournament which will be contested at Sussex Central High School.
Darren Collins of Delmar on his performance: "It wasn't about me I did it for my team we haven't had a conference champion in a long time I got my 150 win." I have a great staff of coaches in Mark Quillen along with my teammate Justin Thomas we work together in the wrestling room." "Hopefully when the states comes I would like to win the title."
Sussex Central and Lehigh Bound Connor McDonald Wins 3rd Henlopen Title
For Sussex Central's Connor McDonald, carrying a career record of 154 wins and 3 losses, defeated Luis Burgos of Caesar Rodney by a 7-3 score for his 3rd Henlopen Wrestling title along with his other credentials are as follows in his sophomore year won the 2004 Beast of the East Tournament 3 Henlopen and 2 Delaware State Wrestling Titles added to his credentials 2 Cadet Freestyle Titles in Fargo, North Dakoka, the Lehigh bound star knows what it takes to be ready for the upcoming 2007 State High School Wrestling Tournament that will be held at his home school of Sussex Central High School. His 2007 record is 43-3
Connor McDonald of Sussex Central High School on his 3rd title: "The best thing for me was winning 3 titles in a row and Luis Burgos of Caesar Rodney is very tough to wrestle. "We met 3 or 4 times in the season and it's hard to beat him, when I wrestled him my first time I won 3-2 I wrestled tight and not to give him a lead or a takedown but tonight I learned his style figured I can turn it up a notch." On my first two takedowns, I used two fireman carries and stepped behind and used a couple of high crotch moves that is what made me improve my style." When the state tournament comes here at my school I want to work hard in practice take advantage of my goal is to win my 3rd state title."
