Sussex Techís Jamar Beckett Wins Henlopen Conference TitleBy David A. Willauer-Contributing Delaware Editor-Sussex Central High
After a successful year in 2007 in wrestling andfootball, Techís Jamar Beckett is ready for 2008, last year, after a 2nd place finish in 2007 in the Henlopen Conference and 3rd in the states, Sussex Techís Jamar Beckett won the 2008 Henlopen Conference wrestling title with a 5-1 defeat
over 2007 defending state champion Chris Drummond of Milford High School.
It showed me where I was at and can improve on itís isnít important but my goal
is to win the states this is helps me get to it isnít significant to where I
want to be 3rd in the states last year I was finding out who I was and where I was it
showed me that I can hang with these guys along with hard work listen to the
coaches and to get me somewhere. Last year I lost to Chris Drummond in the semi
finals it took me by surprise and gave me sometime of goal to work through the
summer ultimately to win the state title
I wrestled him (Chris Drummond) in the Delmarva Classic at Wicomico High School
in Salisbury, MD in the finals it was a lot of talk and we wanted to get it on
the mat and see where were at it coudlnít be a state beating him there I can on
this stuff
For my 100th win I defeated one of the individuals from Parkside in the Delmarva
Classic
When I lead 3-1 and for the takedown I used an old fashioned double leg takedown
he tried to roll me through I sank my hips and won.
One goal is the state title and this is what I wanted
Sussex Techís Alex Thomas Wins 2nd Henlopen Conference Title and Registers his 100th Win
Alex Thomas out of Sussex Technical High School in Georgetown Delaware won his 2nd
consecutive Henlopen Conference title by defeated Donnie Messick of Smyrna by a
9-7 score: :In the match vs. Donnie Messick of Smyrna I wanted the match to be
more aggressive wanted
people to watch more then that I felt that I controlled him very well and he is
a great competitor to wrestled him like that and have so much success helps my
confidence. I wrestled him before in our regular dual meet and defeated him 6-0
2 weeks ago and defeated 3-2 in overtime. In the 7-2 win I felt real tight
tried to loosen up there and it is hard to wrestle here in Centralís gymnasium.
I certainly will have success and my goal is to knocked off Vinnie Ranauto of
Caravel a 2 time state champion heís got the record for most wins in Delaware
there no doubt it is going to be a battle.
Sussex Central Freshman Sensation Cody Coombs Wins Henlopen Conference TitleBy David A. Willauer-Delaware Contributing Editor-Sussex Central High
School-Georgetown, DE: Freshman Sensation Cody Coombs won his first Henlopen
Conference Wrestling title by defeating Indian River senior Mike Magaha by a 5-1
score."In the 5-1 win over Mike Magaha of Indian River, he was seeded number 1
in theconference I was 2nd as a freshman and made it up 2-0 dominate hard time
in first period I was nervous it was close I had to step it up a little and used
the half nelson for the 3 point near fall that move has helped me all year it
was close and pushed my hardest
My teammates told me if I won the title, we have broken the record for our squad
to win 7 individual conference title out team stepped up all year in the states
it is going to be tough, Mike Magaha is a tough individual from Indian River
along with individuals from the Independent and Blue Hens it is going to be
tough competition

Caesar Rodney and Oklahoma State Bound Alex Meade Ends Season with 3rd State Title
Alex Meade concluded his high school wrestling career after winning 2 Beast of the East Wrestling and 2 Ironman Wrestling titles, won his 3rd state title by defeating Tyler Snook of St. Marks. ìIt feels good to win my 3rd state title this is my last high school match today.î ìGreat year I was only taken down one time this year and did everything possible that I could do.î ìI started off a little slow vs. Snook by leading 2-0 after the first period he pushed me and scored my points to win the match.
Nick Tiberi was a member of the very much surprised Silver Eagle football team that went all the in the Division II football final and for the first time won the title over Caravel. ìIn football at 2007 it reminded me how the wrestling team was a couple years ago when we had that fire team and gave everything they had every play at every game we counted on each other and respected each one another it is hard this year because the wrestling team hasnít been following up with that but the football team made me have confidence in myself.î
In the dual meet, the Silver Eagles were defeated by Salesianum 47-18. ìOur team could have stepped it up vs. Salesianum, will do a lot better at tournaments, our goal is to win the Division II Dual Meet Tournament coming up at Delaware State, the Blue Hens along with my 3rd Blue Hen and State titles.î
At Hodgson, where he won 2 time Blue Hen and State Titles under former head coach Stan Spoor, he placed once at the Beast this year won 2 time at the Mt. Mat Madness.
I wrestled all Nationally ranked guys I felt that I had to step it up and didnít a level that I barely reached.
ì118-25 is my career record. I predict another win at the Blue Hens and another state title along with that.
ìLast week at the Blue Hens I improved a lot this year by being unscored upon I always enjoy stepping it up more at the Blue Hens and States in the finals I hope that the goal to keeping myself unscored upon helped me win.î

Caravel Academy's Vincenzo A. Ranauto Becomes Delaware's All Time Winningest Wrestler
For Vinnie Ranauto, a 2 way All State football player at fullback and defensive back to his wrestler career at Caravel Academy made history on January 26, 2008, at the Big Blue Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Christiansburg, VA, became Delaware's All Time Winningest Wrestler at 173 wins and 24 losses breaking 3 time state champion and former Hodgson wrestler Jordan Sianni's 172-10 as he defeated Joe Phillips of Blacksburg High School by an 11-4 score.
"I'm excited I got the record and knew that it was a goal that I achieved my senior year this was one of my goals that I've accomplished and am happy." "In my freshman year I wasn't saying that I can set this goal but in my senior year I didn't know that I had tied the record that I tied Jordan Sianni in the semi finals I wrestled the individual from Christiansburg in the semi finals and pinned him in 1:00 and in the finals I defeated Joey Phillips of Blacksburg by an 11-4 score."
"I was a 2 time Christiansburg Invitational champion and at Mount Mat Madness this is something that I look on the schedule and have worked hard for this goal they are tough tournament but I have to get in there to do my job and get it done At the Beast of the East, I placed 5th in my junior year and after football season last year I finished in 3rd place." said Vinnie Ranauto.
In his 8th grade year in 2004 he finished 2nd in the Independent Conference Tournament, he qualified for the states and was elimanated in the consolation round and finished with a 30-10 record.
In his freshman year, he improved his skills a lot and was defeated by Nick Dominelli of Salesianum in the state final by a 3-2 score. " In my freshman year I came in won a lot of matches and was ranked in the state preseason but I didn't let it to get to me." "Twice I wrestled Nick Dominelli in the Independent Conference final he defeated me 6-2 and again 3-2 in the state finals." "Nick Zambanini, my former coach he had the game plan just move with him and try to get the shots in I grabbed his leg as time ran out."
His sophomore year got much better as he defeated defending state champion Andy Bokinsky from Indian River by a very close 3-2 score. "My sophomore year I wrestled him and the Tiger Classic at Alexis I DuPont and he defeated me 5-2 that was the time that I was out of shape after football but in the states I felt more confidence in myself and once when I took him down I won the match by a 3-2 score I knew that he is tough in the top position and I was on bottom he was trying to get his shots and I came out with the win."
"In my junior year last year I defeated Mike Delduca of William Penn by a 7-4 score I came out there I wrestled him before and pinned him two year ago at the states and I was coming out there confident when he started wrestled he was giving me a good match had a good game plan at the end of the contest I got called for stalling twice everyone was loud I scored a takedown in the third period for the win that was huge for me."
"After I graduate I commited to Shippensburg University for football and happy about that am glad that the recruiting process is over very stressful I feel more comfortable about the coaches and players at Shippensburg the atmosphere everything about the school I want to learn and to play all 4 of my years I have to work hard in the off season by lifting weights hopefully to get some playing time."

St. Markís High Spartans Place Second at Vangaurd Invitational
The St. Markís High wrestling team finished off its regular season tournament
schedule with a second place showing at the Vanguard Invitational at Sun Valley
High.
The Spartans crowned two champions and placed nine wrestlers but were just edged
out for the team title by Penncrest, who had six titlists.
Sophomore Sean Boylan continued his sensational season by winning the 112 pound
title and raising his season record to 34-1 while junior captain Ty Snook earned
a hard fought decision in the championship match to win the 152 pound bracket.
ìTy Snook and Boylan really had strong matches throuhout the tournament,î said
St. Markís coach Jason Bastianelli.
ìSnook's match in the finals was incredible based upon his turning his opponent
with five seconds left in the third period.î
Freshman Josh Snook (125), sophomore Bobby Telford (189) and senior Matt
Truszcienski (285) all made the finals and finished second for St. Markís.
ìI felt Josh Snook, Telford, and Truszcienski all wrestled well and had a great
match in the event,î
Bastianelli said. ìSpecifically Josh, Bobby, and Matt's semifinal matches were
hard fought and tactically smart. Matt earning a takedown in the final second
of his semifinal was a fantastic win and shows his mental toughness and desire
to succeed.î
The Spartans also had three third place finishers in freshman Michael Valania
(103), senior Vinnie Shaw (145) and junior Brian Mey (160). Sophomore Ethan
Mayes finished fourth at 135.
ìValania, Shaw, and Bryan Mey all had fantastic third place bouts dominating
from start to finish after running into tough opponents in the semifinals,î
Bastianelli said. ìAnd Ethan Mayes placing shows his
continuous progress as a second year wrestler who loves the sport and tries to
get better every day.î
The Spartans were without two of their best wrestlers in Sean Dolan and Cory
Olsen who both missed the tournament.
St. Markís now turns its attention to the last three dual meets of the regular
season and the dual meet state tournament. The Spartans wrestle Hodgson this
Wednesday and William Penn Friday night.
ìAs a coaching staff we are really looking forward to our final three in state
dual meets and the dual meet state tournament,î Bastianelli said. ì St. Mark's
had a great home crowd this past Thursday in a nice victory against Smyrna and with Friday being Alumni Night we are hoping to fill the bleacher in green and gold. Honoring our 1988 and 1998 state championship teams will give our wrestlers an opportunity to get a look
into our glorious past as we plan on putting some more hardware in our state
championship trophy case come February.î
Spartans Challenged at Mount Mat Madness
Under normal circumstances Mount Mat Madness is one of the toughest wrestling tournaments in the region. However, itís even more difficult when youíre missing four starters, two of whom wouldíve been seeded first or second.
Despite missing Sean Dolan, Michael Mauk, Ross Withrow and Cory Olsen, the St. Markís High wrestling team still managed a tie for eighth place Marylandís premiere high school tournament.
Sean Boylan again led the way for the Spartans, rolling his way through the 103-pound bracket. Boylan earned a technical fall over Spring Groveís Jake Verhayen in the championship match.
ìBoylan continues to impress dominating his opponents from start to finish and running his record to 31-1 against our challenging scheduleî said St. Markís coach Jay Bastianelli.
Vinnie Shaw won four matches and grabbed fifth place at 140 pounds while Matt Truszcienski also won four times and earned fifth at 285. Both won their fifth place matches in quadruple overtime rideouts.
ìMatt and Vinnie really came through strong after losing tough quarterfinal matches but wrestling back strong in the consolations and finishing fifth,î Bastianelli said. ìBoth seniors had four wins on the weekend and showed their resilience and mental toughness in their marathon matches for fifth. With Matt and Vinnie winning in the final stanza of OT.îMcDonogh (Md.) won the tournament and was followed by Wyoming Seminary (Pa.). Sussex Central had a strong tournament and finished in third, highest of all Delaware teams. Hodgson finished fifth.ìOverall this was not the best tournament to be missing four competitors due to the challenging environment that Mount Mat Madness presented,î Bastianelli said. ìBut the coaching staff and I are really looking forward to having our first home match on Thursday against Smyrna and wrestling in front of our home crowd. Smyrna presents a nice challenge and we are looking forward to getting our whole line back as we begin our four in state dual meets before the post season.îFollowing the Smyrna match, the Spartans will wrestle in the Vanguard Invitational at Sun Valley High in Aston, Pa. Saturday.

Freshman Josh Snook (125), sophomore Bobby Telford (189) and senior Matt Truszcienski (285) all made the finals and finished second for St. Markís.
ìI felt Josh Snook, Telford, and Truszcienski all wrestled well and had a great match in the event,î Bastianelli said. ìSpecifically Josh, Bobby, and Matt's semifinal matches were hard fought and tactically smart. Matt earning a takedown in the final second of his semifinal was a fantastic win and shows his mental toughness and desire to succeed.î
The Spartans also had three third place finishers in freshman Michael Valania (103), senior Vinnie Shaw (145) and junior Brian Mey (160). Sophomore Ethan Mayes finished fourth at 135.

Spartans Place Second as Team While Placing 13 of 14 Wrestlers at the Ray Oliver Tournament
The St. Markís High wrestling team had its second straight strong showing of the early season with a second place finish at the Ray Oliver Tournament at the McDonogh School in Baltimore.
McDonogh, ranked in the top 20 nationally, crowned nine champions and won the tournament with 268 points. The Spartans had three champions and placed 13 of their 14 wrestlers in the top six and finished with 247.5 points.
V
ìOverall, it was a great team effort,î said St. Markís coach Jay Bastianelli. ìTo push them (McDonogh) to the end in the team score was fantastic. We showed a lot of depth in having 13 guys place. It was great effort.î
St. Markís Sean Boylan (103), Sean Dolan (112) and Cory Olsen (215) all won individual titles while Robbie DeMasi (171) and Matt Truszcienski (285) placed second.
ìOlsen was great,î Bastianelli said. ìHe beat a state champion in a great match in the semis and then wrestled a really smart match in the final.
ìDolan looked great on the mat all weekend. He was just awesome on top and it really showed.î
Boylan, who had three falls and won the final with a major decision, was named the tournamentís Outstanding Wrestler.
ìBoylan is so slick on his feet,î Bastianelli said. ìHe just wrestled really well and is looking forward to this weekend at the Beast of the East.î
The Spartans entered the final round trailing the Eagles by just 5.5 points. McDonogh, though, had all nine of its finalists win to secure the tournament victory.
Eight other St. Markís wrestlers placed among the top six including Josh Snook (4th at 125), Casey Sawyer (5th at 130), Ethan Mayes (4th at 135), Michael Mauk (5th at 140), Vinnie Shaw (3rd at 145), Ty Snook (5th at 152), Brian Mey (6th at 160) and Bobby Telford (4th at 189).
ìWe had a lot of guys out-wrestle their seed and I think that just shows how strong we are and how weíre improving,î Bastianelli said.
In addition to McDonogh, the 18-team field included several teams ranked highly in their states, including Langley and Hermitage from Virginia and Glenelg and North Carroll from Maryland.
St. Markís now turns its attention to the nationís top high school tournament, the Beast of the East, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at the University of Delawareís Bob Carpenter Center.
ìWe want to show the nation how strong we are,î Bastianelli said. ìWe want to score in all 14
weight classes. We have great depth and we have some guys that want to get to the finals and win it.
ìItís an exciting year for St. Markís at the Beast of the East and exciting for the coaches to see how far we can go. We finished 15th two years ago and we think this team is better than that.î
DeMasi injured
One negative note from the weekend was the unfortunate shoulder injury to junior 171-pounder Robbie DeMasi. Wrestling in the finals, DeMasi landed badly on his previously injured shouldered and dislocated it. After a great start to the 2007 season, he will miss the remainder of the year.
ìThere are so many positive attributes Robbie has brought to the wrestling program over the past three years,î said St. Markís coach Jay Bastianelli. ìRobbie's enthusiasm and passion for life were such a pleasure on a daily basis in the room. Robbie overcame so much through his shoulder rehab to just have the opportunity to wrestle this year and the coaching staff and I are so proud to have him be and continue to be a huge part of our wrestling family. Robbie's character, resilience, and determination will never be forgotten.î
JV wrestlers shine
Please congratulate members of the St. Mark's Wrestling green team for their outstanding performance at the 2007 Ray Oliver Invitational in Baltimore. Earning gold medals for the Spartans were Tyler Pendergast, Michael Valania, Chris Shaw, and Joel Mey. Placing second were Nick Shaw, Pat Reilly, and Beau Callery. Earning bronze medals were Matt Karpinski and DJ Fasick while Nate Downing followed through with a 4th place finish. Placing 5th for St. Mark's were Tyler Scarborough, Bill Ginnaras, and Maurice Alston. The Green team will next compete at the Capital Classic in Dover.
Spartans Win the Patriot Classic
The St. Markís High wrestling team crowned five champions and placed 12 of its 14 wrestlers on its way to a convincing victory in the Patriot Classic at Northern High in Calvert County, Md.
Sean Boylan (103), Sean Dolan (119), Vinnie Shaw (145), Ty Snook (152) and Cory Olsen (215) all won individual titles while the Spartans outdistanced the remainder of the 20-team field by over nearly 100 points.
Freshman Michael Mauk captured second place at 140 pounds while fellow freshmen Michael Valania (112) and Josh Snook (125) each recorded five victories and finished third. In addition, Casey Sawyer (130), Brian Mey (160) and Bobby Telford (189) all had third place finishes while Matt Truszcienski (285) came in fourth.
ìThe coaching staff and I were pleased with the finish of the team winning 16 out of our last 18 matches and rebounding nicely after a disappointing morning session,î said St. Markís coach Jay Bastianelli. ìThe team really came on strong at the end and to place 11 in the top 3 and 12 in the top 4 to win the tournament by 99.5 points.îCaptains Shaw and Snook had the most exciting finals with Shaw knocking off a defending state champ and previously unbeaten wrestler and Snook rallying for back points in the final seconds.ìVinnie and Ty really shined in the finals based upon Shaw's dominance over his undefeated state champion opponent and Snook's come from behind performance taking his opponent down and turning him in the last 20 seconds,î Bastianelli said. ìBoth captains showed mental toughness, heart, and great confidence throughout their bouts.îDolan had four pins and was named the tournamentís Outstanding Wrestler while Boylan recorded all pins and tech falls in his run to the championship. Olsen continued his hot start to the season, winning four straight matches to improve his record to 21-2 on the season.ìSean, Sean, and Cory all showed that consistency equals greatness,î the coach said. ìAll three once again put forth an outstanding performance and their dominance against our ridiculously challenging schedule is amazing. Right now they are 62-7 combined.î
The coach thought his other place-winners had good tournaments as well.ìMauk continues to show improvement every week and earning a silver coming off his performance at Bethelehem was impressive,î Bastianelli said. ìAll of our third place guys showed true grit wrestling back hard and bouncing back after tough semifinal losses. Also all gained valuable experience with Valania racking up five wins, Snook earning five, Sawyer getting four, Mey earning four, Telford earning four, and Truszcienski coming up on the short end of a few bad calls and getting three wins.îThe Spartans now turn their attention to the Virginia Duals where they are the No. 1 seed for the first time in their history. The prestigious national tournament will be Friday and Saturday in Hampton, Va.
News Journal's Athlete of the Week
Tower Hill School's A J Carter had a key pin in the 285-pound match as the Hillers defeated Wilmington Friends 34-29 last Thursday. The match started at 119, and Friends led 28-22 entering the 215-pound match, Carter's typical weight class. But when Friends elected to forfeit at 215, Tower Hill decided to take a double forfeit, bumping Carter up to 285. Carter's pin tied the match 28-28. "That really got us back in the match," coach Jack Holloway said. "It looked like things were not going well for us, and that pin was key. A big win for us." John Ierardi's pin at 112 sealed the Hillers' win.

I figured that we needed to get through the middle weight especially at 130, 135 140, 145 and 152, that's where our strength is, our upper weights were close matches." said Salesianum head coach Cameron Davis. " William Penn's John Gibson wrestled Larry Cassidy the last time and it was a 1 point contest. My heavyweight wrestled well but John Gibson is a tough young man." When you wrestle William Penn, you have to come prepared and Marvin Dooley does a good job in getting them ready and prepared." In our first four matches we hopes to get through that those matches from 112 to 125, the contests were up in the air at 130, Sevy Cordero wrestling for us well and Joe Potts followed up with a win in his match. From 160 pounds up to 189 pounds, those were the big wins for us today.

Smyrna Wrestlers Compete on Team Delaware in North Dakota and Tennesee
Submitted by Kurt Howell, Smyrna High varsity wrestling coach: What did you do last summer? Thousands of high school students will answer this question in essay form upon their return to English classes. And, while most will respond with stories of state fairs and beach vacations, a select few will write about their training in preparation for the largest wrestling tournaments in the country. These elite athletes from the Smyrna Wrestling Travel Team competed as members of Team Delaware in Fargo, North Dakota and Knoxville, Tennessee.
Six Smyrna area wrestlers went to North Dakota for the Junior and Cadet National Championships. Jason Baker, Donnie Messick, David Hershberger, Spencer Rhoades, Barry Reece and Stephen Swiggett went to this competition, which is the largest wrestling tournament in the world with over 3,000 wrestlers competing for a chance to be All-American.
Spencer Rhoades was a junior varsity wrestler for Smyrna High School last winter. And, while he did not win a match in either style, he is sure that the experience prepared him for varsity competition. Especially since he wrestled against double national champion Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin in both styles. „I wrestled the national champion on center stage and got his leg,‰ he said, referring to an attempted takedown when he wrestled Thielke on mat one, which is on an elevated stage in the center of the Fargo Dome. „Who can say that?‰
Stephen Swiggett had one of the more surprising performances from Delaware. In freestyle, Swiggett carried three wins into the fifth round of the competition before he bowed out to All-American Kyle Bradley from Missouri. In one of the most exciting matches of the tournament he nearly upended Adam Frey from top-ranked Blair Academy. Swiggett used two explosive moves to gain a 5-3 lead on the All-American before being pinned with his own move. Not bad for a second year wrestler competing in his first freestyle competition ever!
Donnie Messick won two matches in freestyle before running into the eventual national champion. And Jason Baker and Barry Reece won a match in both styles. Bob Baker (Jason‚s father) remarked, „Do you realize that four wrestlers from Smyrna ran into the national champion in their weight class. What an awesome experience!‰
In other competition, Cody Carbine and David Hershberger wrestled in the AAU National Duals in Tennessee. Through the dual meet event Hershberger finished an impressive run at 103 pounds with a 10-4 record while Cody Carbine ended up 9-6.
It was a huge sacrifice of time and effort. Most of these wrestlers put aside vacations, suntans and beach fries for a training schedule that could rival the regimen of ancient Spartan warriors. And while their summer fun was significantly shortened they all understand the payoff it will have in future battles. As the motto on their Smyrna Travel Team shirts point out, „What did you do last summer?‰
The commitment in time and sweat was matched by the expenses needed for these trips and the Smyrna Wrestling Travel Team would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous donations toward helping them compete: Kent Construction; Pinewood Acres LLC; Fletcher Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning; Hurley‚s Fix It, Richard W. Downes State Farm Insurance; Towles Electric Inc.; Smyrna Diner; Team Smyrna; Reece Family Miniatures; First State Equipment Inc.; Faries Funeral Directors Inc.; JTL & Son Inc.; Bobby Clark Stables; Wayside Inn; Ralph Cahall & Son Paving Inc.; Carter-Trettel Agency ˆ Joe Trettel; Webber Farms; Ash‚s Equipment Rentals Inc.; Kenton Ruritan Club; Victor Colbert Construction; Terri A Ford; Steven Nowak; Tom Gares Trucking Co.; John‚s Well Drilling Inc.; Matrix Service; Brandywine Smyrna Inc.; John Messick Construction Inc.; Boondocks Restaurant; Ewing Towing; and RWM Embroidery & More.
