Former St. Marks product Bobby Shaw in his 2nd year of wrestling at University of North Carolina

By David A. Willauer-Staff Reporter-Monday, February 28, 2005: Bobby Shaw, a 3 time state runnerup, one year at Salesianum, 2 years at St. Marks along with a state title in 2002 is currently in his second year under head coach CD Mock. The former Spartan lettered for 4 year in wrestling under head coach Steve Bastianelli. Along with his credentials in the states, he was a 4 time Independent Conference Champion, 1999 Beast of the East Champion earned all state honors in his senior year, made honorable mention All America selection, three time freestyle state champion, wrestled in the Delaware vs. South Jersey Wrestling Classic. Along with his athletic career, Shaw was a four time All Academic, All State , National Honor Society , student council and was an honoree on the Blue vs. Gold committee. "It was a good career in my first year at Salesianum and made the transfer to St. Marks which made a good foundation for me to prepare myself at the college level." "When you come to college it's all technique and work ethic learned a lot there." "Steve Bastianelli is a guy you look up to all the time when he spoke you listen to everything he said respected him a lot along with providing you with an amount of confidence going out there that he shows you the proper wrestling technique everyday gets us ready."

In 2002-2003, Bobby Shaw took a redshirt year and competed in 2 events at 125 pounds and finished 3-2 in the East Stroudsburg Open. "I felt that it was the right time for me to redshirt as some of my teammates have started right in, I needed more technique and workouts to prepare for next year."

In 2003-2004, the exercise and sports science major finished with a 16-22 overall record along with a dual record of 6-12 in dual meets as Carolina's 133 pound starter, his 16 dual meet wins rank him fourth on the squad. In ACC competition he went 3-2 along with posted wins against Maryland, Virginia and NC State

"Wrestling competitive teams like Nebraska helps you to prepare for March when the NCAA's come you have to know how they train which provides confidence for you."

"I feel strong at 125 is where I should be I am satisfied with my year so far getting your weight down properly is tough." "Wrestling under Tar Heel coach CD Mock is good he is great person and you could go to him for anything will back you up we have a good relationship that coach/mentor relationship respect." "Some of the toughest competitors that I have wrestled were top seed Mark Jayne of Illinois and Travis Lee of Cornell and Sam Hazewinkel of Oklahoma I love wrestling those opponents because it gets me up for these matches at the same time it has shown me to prepare for when March comes around at the NCAA's."

"Coming out of St. Marks High School I was more looking at the Ivy Leagues wanted to be a doctor at first Harvard recruited me I didn't get in I called in North Carolina fell in love with Chapel Hill the campus is beautiful and has provided me a good educational foundation at the next level."
