DODDS - Europe High School European Wrestling Championship Tournament, 14 and 15 February 2003

The finale of the DODDS - Europe high school wrestling season came this past weekend and meet all expectations. The tournament was sponsored by the DODDS-Europe Athletic Director Ms. Karen Seadore, the Director was Floyd Winters, and was hosted by Wiesbaden American High School and Coach Darryl Schwartz and his staff and the Wrestling Booster Club.

The top wrestlers from all over Europe gathered at the Stadt Sporthalle on Elasser Platz in downtown Wiesbaden Germany to compete for the title of European Champion in their respective weight classes. The sporthall was packed with families and friends set to watch high school wrestling at it's best and to pull for their favorite wrestlers and teams. The coaches and wrestlers were ready and it was time to wrestle.

On Day One of the tournament all of the top seeds advanced in their championship brackets posting 23 falls in 24 matches. The highest seeded wrestlers to lose in Day One competition were several fourth seeds. It was a good day for those in the tops of their brackets. The competition was tough but having earned the top seed postings were up to the challenge. Day Two the competition was tougher as the wrestlers and their coaches knew it would be. At the end of the day the top seeds Bryan Apgar (103 - Ramstein), Joe Morrow (119 - Patch), Devon Gardner (125 - Bitburg), Jay Robbins (140 - Kaiserslautern), Saevar Weaver (145 - Wuerzburg), Andrew Isbell (152 - Brussels, BE), Donald Walker (171 - Heidelberg), Charles Greene (215 - Wuerzburg), and Bo Daniels (275 - Iceland) claimed their championship titles. Second seed wrestlers Joe Quicho (112 - Mannheim), Josh Anderson (130 - Patch), James Kellenbence (135 - Naples, IT), Tyler Arms (160 - Heidelberg), and Richard Rendon (189 - SHAPE,BE) completed the list of European Champions. While it would appear that if a wrestler earned a top seed he would win the championship but appearances can be deceiving as any of the "champs" will tell you. Joe Quicho (112) took his match against defending champion Chris Barbe in a decision where he gained his points in the last period of the match winnng 7 -2. Josh Anderson (130) overcame several obstacles this season including his return to the mats after suffering a dislocated elbow back in January. Anderson's opponent in the finals was Joe Hartfield who was seeded third. The match was 8 - 4 Hartfield when in the closing seconds of the third period Anderson was able to get a head and arm hold on him and combine it with a hip-roll bringing him down and pinning him with only a second left on the clock. Second seed James Kellenbence (135) took top seed Thomas Hanson in a 9 - 8 decision. Saevar Weaver (145) was in a action packed match with second seed Nick Kellenbence when Kellenbence suffered a neck injury and was forced to default. Andrew Isbell (152) and Kyle Knudsen had one of the best matches of the tournament but Isbell was able to post a decision over Knudsen. Tyler Arms (160) and top seed Ryan Butler also gave a good accounting of themselves with Arms taking the win with a fall at 4:34 of the match. Returning European Champion Donald Walker (171) had his final match against third seeded David Garcia. Garcia started out like a man possessed but Walker took the match with a fall at 1:33. Second seed Richard Rendon (189) and the top seed Tony Althoff gave the tournament a lot of excitement during their match but Rendon was able to go the distance winning in a 7 - 6 decision. Top seed Charles Greene (215) made quick work of third seed Andrew Ross with a fall in :49 but Ross made a valient effort in his opening moves, he just could not overcome Greene's strength and skill. It was much the same for Bo Daniels (275) when he took on unseeded Sean Boland. Boland's initial moves caught Daniels by surprise but Daniels hung tough and scored a fall in 1:36. No, there were no "gimmies" at the European Championships. The competition was tough.

Injuries are always a possibility in our sport, the referees are ever watchful for potentially dangerous moves and the coaches train to minimize the risk. Three wrestlers suffered match stopping injuries. Top seed Cameron Clawson (130), second seed Nick Kellenbence (145), and second seed Jordan Watts (171). All three have or are recovering. Clawson, a senior at Heidelberg, suffered the most severe injury with a dislocated elbow forcing a injury default and causing him to end up in 6th place. The irony of his injury was that he was competing against the 130 pound champion Josh Anderson in January when Anderson suffered an identical injury and was handed his only loss of the season. Second seed (145) Kellenbence, also a senior, from Naples, IT suffered a neck injury and defaulted his match giving him his only loss of the season. Watts, second seed at 171, was rendered unconcious when he was brought to the mat by Garcia giving Garcia the win. The competition was tough!

It must be noted that Joe Morrow (119), Donald Walker (171), and Bo Daniels (275) are the only three returning European Champions who went through the 2002/2003 campaign with undefeated seasons and for Walker and Daniels it was there second year they were able to accomplish this amazing feat. Unfortunately DODDS-Europe is losing all three wrestlers next year. Morrow will be returning to the States (VA), Walker will be heading off to college and has his sights set on wrestling at the college level (Arizona or Penn State), and Daniels will be reporting for active duty in the Army upon graduating this June.

If the level of competition demonstrated at this year's European Championship Tournament is any indication of what we will see in the 2003/2004 season it will give every wrestling fan something to look forward. Remember "Pin to Win."

DODDS - Europe Wrestling Results for 1 February 2003

This week's competition shows how serious our wrestlers are. Several activities took some of the focus off wrestling this week, first was the annual Model United Nations held in the Netherlands and the second took place in Italy where the Italian police arrested twenty-eight suspected terrorist and caused the Command (military) to raise the force protection level there. In the first instance most of the wrestlers chose to wrestle instead of attending the Model UN and in the second, teams from Aviano and Sigonella Italy were not able to travel to Naples for the Mediterranean Regional Championship Tournament. In the isolated cases of wrestlers attending the Model UN they will have to workout their continued participation in the DODDS wrestling program with their coaches and as for those caught by the raised force protection, the DODDS - Europe Athletic Director, Ms. Karen Snyder, along with the seperate school Athletic Directors and wrestling coaches are working on a plan, based on individual records within the Region, to allow the top wrestlers from Aviano and Sigonella to participate in the upcoming DODDS European Championship Tournament. The aim is to have the best wrestlers, with the best records participating in the Europeans.

The Mediterranean Regional Championship Tournament was won for the second year by defending champions Naples followed by Vicenza, American Overseas School of Rome, Ankara, and Incirlik. Naples was undefeated in Regional competition this season. 140 pound, Freshman wrestler, JoJo Fears from Naples was voted the "Outstanding Wrestler of the Year" for the Mediterranean Region. The "Most Falls" was earned by Derek Nehis, 130 pound, from the American School of Rome with five (5).

In the central region competition continued with the final regular season tournaments at AFNORTH in the Netherlands, Vilseck and Ramstein Germany. Each meet pitted several teams from the same divisions allowing the wrestlers one last opportunity to study their opponents before the upcoming Division tournaments. At Ramstein three of the Division I teams participated and the results were surprising. There were several upsets, number one seeds went down, undefeated wrestlers were beaten. It was indeed a surprise, the atmosphere was electrified, the spectators were on their feet, the competition was as hard as it comes, each wrestler there knew that this was a showdown. It has been reported that this same attitude was at AFNORTH and Vilseck too giving this weeks meets the highest marks thus far this season. It is all a prelude for the Divisionals and Europeans.

Of special note was a Exhibition Match between middle schoolers Chris Turner of Heidelberg and Scott McQuiston of Ramstein. Scott is undefeated this year and Chris' only losses have come from Scott. Their match was 5 to 5 at the end of the third period and in over-time Scott was able to takedown Chris and thereby winning the match and maintaining his unbeaten records. These two young wrestlers put on a great and exciting match. I know that we will be seeing a lot of them in the future and we wish them well.

DODDS - Europe Divisional Championship Tournamnet Results

The Department of Defense Dependent Schools - Europe held their Division I, II, and III Championship Tournaments 7 and 8 February 2003. It was easy to see and feel the excitement at the tournament. There was a edge to each match. Every wrestler gave their best efforts. This was for the Championship and qualification for the "big dance", the European Tournament and the opportunity to become a European Champion.

The divisional tournaments are the last meets for team standings and for the teams to win the Divisional Championship. The 2003 DODDS-Europe Division Champions are Division I - Heidelberg American High School, Heidelberg, Germany, Division II - Bitburg American High School, Bitburg, Germany, and Division III - Brussels American High School, Brussels, Belgium. The results for the Mediterranean Regional Championships held on 31 January - 1 February 2003 in Naples, Italy were posted last week and Naples American High School, Naples, Italy claimed that title. Our congratulations to each team and coaches John Mackey/Chris Lowery (Heidelberg), Jeff Watts (Bitburg) and Joe Fiedler (Brussels).

Competition at each tournament was intense. In Division I the margin of victory for Heidelberg was 225 team points to 214.5 for runner-up Kaiserslautern. In Division II Bitburg dominated with 215.5 team points over Patch who earned 136 points. Of special interest here was the participation of Patch's 130 pound wrestler Josh Anderson who returned to the mat this week after suffering a dislocated elbow with ruptured tendons on 18 January. Anderson showed he was ready though by winning his weight class by falls over each of his opponents and earning him the second seed at the upcoming Europeans. It was also through Anderson's efforts that Patch was able to come out of the tournament as runner-up over a very competitive SHAPE, Belgium team who scored 128 team points. Division III's champions Brussels scored 197.5 points over runner-up London Central with 140.

Missing from this years' tournament will be defending European and Division III champion Greg Reilly from Giessen who is suffering from a elbow injury and Iceland's Jonathan Watson who was seeded first at the Division III but was unable to compete due to illness and was forced to forfeit his matches at the Division III Championships.

The issue of qualification for the Europeans in the Mediterranean Region caused by the raised Force Protection Levels there has been resolved. The top wrestlers from Aviano and Sigonella, Italy who were forced to miss the Mediterranean Regionals will be allowed to participate at the European Championships according to the DODDS-Europe Athletic Director Ms. Karen Snyder.

The European Championship Tournament is the toughest tournament in Europe with only the best high school wrestlers participating. This tournament is equivalent to the state championships in the US and many of the wrestlers here have attended wrestling camps and participated in various state tournaments. The competition will be tough. Wrestlers to watch at the Europeans include 103 Nick Dowty (AFNORTH) and Bryan Apgar (Ramstein), 112 Josh Quiocho (Mannheim) and Chris Barbe (Ramstein), 119 Joe Morrow (Patch), Joe Pears (Brussels)and Kyle McQuiston (Bitburg), 125 Andrew Zachar (Heidelberg) and Devon Gardner (Bitburg), 130 Cameron Clawson (Heidelberg) andf Josh Anderson (Patch), 135 James Kellenbence (Naples), Ariel Arce (Hanau), Travis Boltz (Heidelberg), and Thomas Hanson (Kaiserslautern), 140 Ben Torgensen (American School of London) and Bryan Isbell (Brussels), 145 Saever Weaver (Wuerzburg), Nick Kellenbence (Naples), and Jerry Ortiz (Hanau), 152 Kyle Knudsen (Heidelberg) and Andrew Isbell (Brussels), 160 Ryan Butler (AFNORTH), Tyler Arms (Heidelberg), and Payton Turner (Hohenfels), 171 Donald Walker (Heidelberg - undefeated in past two seasons) and Jordan Watts (Bitburg), 189 Tony Althoff (Kaiserslautern), Hutch Turner (Hohenfels), and Richard Rendon (SHAPE), 215 Charles Greene (Wuerzburg) and Mike Ewing (Ansbach), and at 275 Bo Daniels (Iceland), Charles Madden (Kaiserslautern), and Ryan Van Ginkel (Bitburg).
