Longtime Marist Coach to Hand Over Reigns

CHICAGO, IL, November 6, 2007— Marist High School coach Mark Gervais announced the 2007-2008 season will be his last at the helm of the school’s wrestling program. Assistant coach Brendan Heffernan will take over in 2008-2009.

Gervais (Mt. Greenwood) has headed Marist’s wrestling program since 1984, leading the team to 24 of its 28 consecutive East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) titles. His career record is 495-69-2. His teams have won 17 regional championships and 7 sectionals. Gervais’s teams have also garnered one state title (1987), one second place state finish (1997), and three third place state titles (1985, 1989, 1991). He has coached 10 individual state champs and 50 individual state finishers.

Gervais, who came to Marist in 1982, has been a member of the physical education department, and currently serves as the department chair. He also served as Marist’s athletic director from 1995 to 1998. He was inducted into Marist’s Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the ESCC Hall of Fame in 2006.

A graduate of Northeast Missouri State (B.S.) and Eastern Illinois University (M.S.), Gervais has served as president of the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. He is a member of that organization’s Hall of Fame as well. Gervais previously coached at Truman State University and Eastern Illinois University. He has led several Junior National Teams.

“It’s really been a joy and honor to have the head coach position,” Gervais said. “All good things must come to an end, and it’s time for a change in the program. It’swonderful to have someone like Brendan Heffernan step in and take over a great tradition.” Gervais will continue to teach at Marist and coach the lower levels of the school’s wrestling program.

Heffernan (Oak Lawn), a 1999 Marist graduate, has been a teacher and coach at Marist since 2005. A standout wrestler in his own right, Heffernan is a two-time state place winner and took third at Junior Nationals. He also wrestled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Heffernan is also the head sophomore football coach.

On accepting the position, Heffernan said, “I am thrilled about the position and appreciate Coach Gervais giving me the opportunity.” Gervais coached Heffernan while he was a student at Marist and Heffernan said he continues to be a helping hand. “Coach Gervais has showed me what it means to be a coach and I am honored that he thinks highly enough of me to turn over the program, which is one of the most respected in the state,” Heffernan said. Heffernan hopes to maintain the same level of success and integrity the program has been known for over the years.

Celebrating over 40 years of excellence, Marist High School, 4200 W. 115th Street in Chicago, is a Catholic, college preparatory school educating young men and women in heart, mind, and body.

PERSISTENCE

This word means to keep trying when you think you cannot or when you do not feel like trying anymore. When you do not feel like trying or think you can not try anymore, this is a fantastic time to tell your self you can, motivate your self, and encourage your self that you are able and ready for the job, task, exercise or what ever you are doing.

A clear example is when you fail a test or lose a match or try to do something and cannot seem to do or get it rightand you keep trying because you know soon you will grasp the concept, understand the problem, or get better because you did not give up and you kept trying.

One way to be persistent when you do not immediately achieve a goal is to ask for assistance, instruction or guidance from a parent, teacher, or coach. Many of you already do this and that is good.

Some times you may get angry, upset, mad, or frustrated when you attempt to do something and you do not succeed right away. This is the point when you must tell your self "I can do this. This is also a good time to ask someone like a parent, teacher, or coach what to do next time in order to succeed. It is always better to try again after instruction, assistance, and guidancethis is the time when your brain is most ready to learn.

Here is something to think about: you will succeed and or learn if you keep trying.

Several examples are you learning to walk or talk or count or read or tie your shoe. Can you imagine if all of you would have stopped trying how to walk or talk when you were very little? Babies have to be shown or taught how to do nearly everything except being persistentbeing persistent is an innate, instinctive, or unlearned skill that helps babies survive and thrive. You possess or have the same skill and it is to your advantage to fortify, strengthen, or become better at being persistent.

If you do not succeed the first time, you are about averageif you ask for assistance, instruction, & guidance and then try again you are more likely to succeed and learn. http://www.eteamz.com/BKWC/news/index.cfm?cat=218752

Nutrition
It is important to understand that combining <http://www.eteamz.com/BKWC/handouts/index.cfm?cat=30982&subsite=1672341>exercise with good nutrition helps to facilitate an efficient, healthy body & mind. Also important, is to comprehend the <http://www.geocities.com/nutriflip/4rdas.htm>Recommended Dietary Allowances. What follows is a brief overview of the aforementioned.

The regular intake of foods that are high in fat, sugar, salt, & cholesterol do more damage to your body than good. These foods increase your chances of stroke, kidney failure, heart disease & obesity while decreasing your motivation to exercise. These foods also inadequately fuel your body; your body will perform at a low, efficiency rate because it was polluted with foods that lacked high nutritional value. The United States Department of Agriculture suggests the <http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2000/document/>ABC's for good health include choosing a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains & a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.

The foods you eat should increase your overall energy level while decreasing your chances of chronic diseases. The <http://www.os.dhhs.gov/>Health and Human Services also believes to choose a diet that is low in saturated fat, cholesterol, & moderate in total fat to decrease your likelihood of stroke, kidney failure, heart disease & obesity. Choosing foods with lower salts and sugars will decrease your caloric & sodium intake while increasing your nutritional value; this leads to efficient food consumption and decreases the risk of high blood pressure. The <http://www.dga2000training.usda.gov/>Dietary Guidelines for American's suggest to choose beverages and foods that moderate your intake of sugars and prepare foods with less salt to lesson unnecessary weight gain & high blood pressure.

The <http://ific.org/>International Food Information Council (IFIC) believes a wide variety of foods rich in essential nutrients are necessary for healthy, growing bodies. Many of these foods can be seen in the below "Food Guide Pyramid". The IFIC went on to say such foods include carbohydrate-rich grains and fruits and vegetables necessary to supply vitamins, minerals, fiber and energy vital to good health. Adequate amounts of dairy products, lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, dry beans and nuts also provide nutrients that contribute to proper growth and development. Following this prescription & <http://www.eteamz.com/BKWC/handouts/index.cfm?cat=30982&subsite=1672341>exercising increases your health while adding life to your years. http://www.eteamz.com/BKWC/news/index.cfm?cat=220753

Water or Sport Drinks

Fluid replacement is vital for athletes or anybody who is alive and breathing. This paper looks at fluid replacement to replenish the body.

Water. Water is most important for several reasons. For one, water is abound and around everywhere in the continental USA and in most cases is free. Experts believe water to be the most important nutrient to all bodiessecond only to the air we breathe or oxygen. Some other important functions of water are that: it is needed to maintain homeostasis, it is the most abundant solvent or medium in the human body, it is important in regulating cell volume, nutrient transport, waste removal, and body temperature, & it is distributed both in intra- and intercellular compartments and accounts for up to 80% of our body weight at birth and up to 70% of our adult body weight.

People who work out and or lose water or sweat via workouts may need to replace more of this fluid. Researchers believe it depends on several factors such as climate, age, exercise level, and body weight to determine the appropriate amounts of water needed daily. For instance, if you sweat more profusely or more than someone older, younger, bigger, or smaller, you may need to drink more water. Two other examples are people exercising at high altitudes and people exercising at elevated or hot environments. These folks may lose more water via sweat thus requiring more water replacement. Every ones body is different, but all bodies need water.

Proper hydration should begin before you begin to exercise, while you are exercising, and after exercise is complete. Here are so me suggestions:

drink 17 to 20 oz of water 2 to 3 hours before exercise

drink 7 to 10 oz of water 10 to 20 minutes before exercise

drink 7 to 10 oz of water every 10 to 20 minutes during activity

if you sweat heavily, you may need to drink more

Experts have not determined how much water everyone needs because everyone is different and several other factors. But, all of the experts suggest by the time you are thirsty due to exercising you may already be dehydrated.

Sport Drinks. There are several sport drinks that replenish the body with electrolytes. These drinks and others like them (read the labels to find what the drinks contain) are known to keep the body from overheating, much like water, and also supply the body with the electrolytes potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium to provide energy during intense workouts (water does not replace these energy sources). Sport drinks may be considered an enhancement over water as a body temperature regulator and fluid replacer for the aforementioned reasons.

It is interesting to note that most sport drinks, if not all, have flavors. This is done, perhaps, to make certain you drink the appropriate amounts of the drinks and or a marketing ploy. Sometimes, people drink till they are not thirsty which may or may not replace or hydrate the body fully. Most sport drinks with flavor tend to make folks drink more thus hydrating the body fully. Unlike most waters, sport drinks are not free.

Super Sport Drinks. Super sport drinks tend to add to what water and sport drinks already have. Some of the ingredients in super sport drinks may include: choline, creatine, protein, carbohydrates, & antioxidants (again, it is important to read the labels). Most of these drinks are designe d for endurance athletes or sports they may perform for hours on end. The body tends to lose more energy and other nutrients when workouts are longer or of the endurance nature.

Super sport drinks are also known to help muscle recovery. Soreness that results from overuse of body or muscles may be relieved if super sports drinks are employed within half an hour after intense exercising.

Fruit Juices. Fruit juices are fine for dinners and or snacks. But, fruit juices are typically over concentrated with carbohydrates and sugars and thus may not be suited ideally as a fluid replacer before, during, or after exercising. The high levels of sugars and carbohydrates may trigger an upset stomach or a laxative effect in your body. This may work against your body and dehydrate you further or make your stomach have severe pains.

Caffeine Drinks. Drinks like coffee or colas may not replace fluids in the short or long run. In fact, these drinks are known to be diuretics and can even have a laxative effect too. Although most of these drinks are water like and water is the main source of fluid in them, they appear to do more damage as a fluid replacer. Caffeine drinks also do not replenish any of the electrolyte stores the body loses during sweating.

Understanding why & how fluid replacement may enhance your workouts is important. This paper briefly alluded to suggestions that may help you on your quest to effectively and efficiently replenish your body with fluids.
